Small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have been in commercial use since the1980’s and over 8-12% of its current uses are in the agricultural sector, but only involving limited uses like surveying, mapping and imaging, which is expected to increase to 47% according to AUVSI with the association of Artificial Intelligence over the next decade. Our research is one such effort to help farmers utilize advanced sUAS technology coupled with Artificial Intelligence and give them meaningful results in a widely used and user friendly interface, like a mobile application. The vision for this application is to provide a completely automated experience to the farmer for a repetitive and periodic analysis of his/her crops where all the instruction needed from the farmer is a push of a button on a one time configured application and ultimately providing results in seconds. This would help the farmer scout their crops, assess yield potential, and determine if additional inputs are needed for increasing grain yield and profit per acre. For making this application we focused on user-friendliness by abstracting crop algorithms, minimized necessary user inputs, and automate the construction of flight paths. Due to internet connection not always being available at farm fields, processing was kept to on-board compute systems and the mobile device to give live results to farmers without reliance on cloud-based analytics. The application is configured to work with DJI Aircraft using OpenCv for video processing and mobile vision, GIS and GPS data for accurate mapping, locating device, sUAS on the mobile application, and FFMPEG for encoding and decoding compressed video data. An algorithm developed by Precision-Ag Lab at the K-State Agronomy Department was implemented into the sUAS application for providing real time yield estimations and nitrogen recommendation algorithm for winter wheat.

Abstract:
To remain competitive and successful in today’s globalized market, companies need a strategy to ensure that they are constantly at the leading edge in terms of products and services. The implementation of a mobile application is one approach to fulfill this requirement. This report describes an overview of the topic, by introducing briefly today’s development tools for mobile application development and subsequently focusing on the Soundhailer application, as the application done by the author. The problem in focus is to find out whether a native or web-based application is preferred for an iOS application production strategy for a start-up company. Moreover, the report delivers an insight into a well-structured method that works good for setting up measuring points for a website, also Soundhailer’s, and the factual realization of a development tool for iOS development. This insight is based on a lot of help from a former student of the Royal Institute of Technology, who has had some previous experience within the area. To show prospective similarities and differences between theory and reality, the experiences are subsequently compared to the theoretical part. Finally, the results are critically discussed. Two versions of the application were developed, both a native version and a web-based version, and the results show that both native and web-based applications can be convenient solutions for companies to implement and use. The results also provide a foundation upon which others can build and better understand how an iOS application is used and developed.

Newbry, Joe S. "Samantha: A Social Location-Based Framework for iOS Applications." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2014. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/939.

Full text
Abstract:
One challenge associated with developing location-based social applications for iOS devices is building a framework on top of Apple’s Core Bluetooth Framework to drive user discovery. Many applications on Apple’s App Store use Bluetooth to enable location-based user discovery. These Social Location-Based Frameworks are private and often are lacking. An ideal Social Location-Based Bluetooth Framework would be public, would be responsive while the application is minimized, have a light battery footprint, and securely transfer the necessary data to enable social interaction. Samantha, a Social Location-Based Framework, meets all of these characteristics. In a Test Application, Samantha took no more than 5 seconds to start up and discover all nearby users. The average discovery time was 3.5 seconds. In addition the battery draw, measured using Apple’s Battery Monitoring Instrument, during testing never exceed 1/20. This means an application running Samantha in the background for a 12-hour period would not significantly drain the battery. In terms of security, Samantha transfers a Unique User Identifier (UUID) across Bluetooth than contains no sensitive information. This UUID, a string of random characters, contains no personal information and it is only useful because it allows specific identification of a nearby user in a database holding additional information. This two-step process ensures that confidential information is never exposed. An example application, Ripple, uses Samantha to create a location-based social application and highlights the framework’s intended use.

Abstract:
Image enhancement improves an image appearance by increasing dominance of some features or by decreasing ambiguity between different regions of the image. Image enhancement techniques have been widely used in many applications of image processing where the subjective quality of images is important for human interpretation. In many cases, the images have lack of clarity and have some effects on images due to fog, low light and other daylight effects exist. So, the images which have these scenarios should be enhanced and made clear to recognize the objects clearly. Histogram-based image enhancement technique is mainly based on equalizing the histogram of the image and increasing the dynamic range corresponding to the image. The Histogram equalization algorithm was performed and tested using different images facing the low light, fog images and colour contrast and succeeded in obtaining enhanced images. This technique is implemented by averaging the histogram values as the probability density function. Initially, we have worked with the MATLAB code on Histogram Equalization and made changes to implement an Application Program Interface i.e., API using Xamarin software. The mobile application developed using Xamarin software works efficiently and has less execution time when compared to the application developed in Android Studio. Debugging of the application is successfully done in both Android and IOS versions. The focus of this thesis is to develop a mobile application on Image enhancement using Xamarin on low light, foggy images.

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis has been performed at Combitech, a technology, development and management consultancy company. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the possibilities for multi-platform development of applications for mobile devices, as well as actually developing a simpler application using multi-platform development. The application is supposed to have functionality for sending an expression of interest for work and thesis work at Combitech, and should be available both as a native application for the Android and iOS operating systems as well as in the form of a web application. The thesis begins with an investigation of the possibilities for multi-platform development of applications for mobile devices. It is concluded that there is a wide range of available development frameworks that target several mobile platforms. It is decided that an HTML/CSS/JavaScript-based framework is most suited for the application to be developed. Therefore four HTML/CSS/JavaScript-based multi-platform development frameworks targetting mobile devices are analyzed more closely, namely jQuery Mobile, PhoneGap, Sencha Touch and Appcelerator Titanium. jQuery Mobile and PhoneGap are chosen to develop the application, and the thesis describes the development work as well as the resulting application. It is concluded that HTML/CSS/JavaScript-based frameworks can provide a nice touch screen optimized user interface that is consistent across platforms with e.g. jQuery Mobile, as well as access to native features and the possibility to package a web application as a native application with e.g. PhoneGap. It is also concluded that jQuery Mobile and PhoneGap can be used to create a modular application that, with well defined interfaces, can be run both as a web application and packaged as a native application on different mobile operating systems with no or minor changes to the code.

Abstract:
Geographical Information Systems and geospatial data are seeing widespread use in various internet and mobile mapping applications. One of the areas where such technologies can be particularly valuable is aeronautical navigation. Pilots use paper charts for navigation, which, in contrast to modern mapping software, have some limitations. This project aims to develop an iOS application for phones and tablets that uses a GeoPackage database containing aeronautical geospatial data, which is rendered on a map to create an offline, feature-based mapping software to be used for navigation. Map features are selected from the database using R-Tree spatial indices. The attributes from each feature within the requested bounds are evaluated to determine the styling for that feature. Each feature, after applying the aforementioned styling, is drawn to an interactive map that supports basic zooming and panning functionalities. The application is written in Swift 3.0 and all features are drawn using iOS Core Graphics

Abstract:
The convenience of mobile applications combined with the efficiency and effectiveness provided by technology has contributed to an increased interest in mobile applications. Local groups and non-profit organizations often utilize outdated, manual processes and don’t have the resources or time to look into improving these systems. For Cal Poly students and other members of the community, this means there is an opportunity to apply technical skills and school projects to address these inefficiencies. This work explores whether a better system can be developed to provide the functionality of the existing system and enhance the experience of users through technology, data tracking, and automation. Two apps demonstrate the application of technology to meet needs within the San Luis Obispo community: Poly Rides is an iOS and Android application that improves ridesharing for Cal Poly students. The idea stemmed from the Cal Poly Rideshare Facebook page, where the posting format for a ride is inconsistent, making it difficult to find a ride match. The Poly Rides app provides an improved user interface for posting, searching, and coordinating rides with other students. Its success has been validated through the popularity of the app. There were 3734 installations and 7925 messages sent as of May 27, 2016. Woods is an iOS application for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch that improves the care tracking process for dogs at Woods Humane Society. The previous technique involved updating a whiteboard to manage the information and care for the avail- able dogs. The whiteboard had inconsistent and limited information, was often out of date, and did not have room to list all of the dogs. An app was created which automatically pulls the dogs from the shelter database, provides more detailed information and instructions, and is available for volunteers on their personal devices. The results revealed a much larger and more positive impact than originally anticipated; volunteers reported feeling more confident providing appropriate care to the dog (65.9%) and that they have more trust in the dogs’ information (52.3%). Of staff and volunteers, 83.9% prefer the app over the whiteboard and 10.7% have no preference. Dog breed, size, age, and photo, details not available on the whiteboard, were reported to be “Very” or “Extremely” important by 56.8% of volunteers. This thesis describes some important requirements for developing community service mobile applications, offers suggestions for facilitating the development of a high quality product, and lists some useful resources for iOS development. Both apps not only reach their goal of improving a manual process in the local community, but also have the potential to improve and impact other communities around the world.

Abstract:
The traditional or the native way to develop mobile applications is to use Java for Android and Objective-c or Swift for iOS. The native way is favored by many since the code and the functionality is optimized for the platform. An- other way to develop mobile applications is to do it the non-native way, with a programming language or technique not made for the platform. This approach has for long been frowned upon due the limited hardware access and perfor- mance loss. React Native and NativeScript offers mobile application develop- ment in a non-native way said full access to the native platforms API using JavaScript all from a single code base. The aim of this thesis has been to de- velop and compare four proof of concept applications of which two are devel- oped natively for Android and iOS and the other are developed using the non- native React Native and NativeScript. The comparison is based on three as- pects: accessing the device’s native hardware and APIs based on what the com- pany Dewire requires from mobile applications, the performance difference on the respective platform and code reusability cross platform. There is no big dif- ference between React Native and NativeScript when comparing native access and everything that was accessible on the native implementation was accessible on the non-native implementation. Based on the performance measurements, React Native falls behind NativeScript. NativeScript handles long lists better than React Native. Lastly a discussion is presented regarding code reusability when developing non-native applications along with some experienced best practices when doing so.

The user is a determining part in the success of an application and even though not the majority, the elderly users make up a considerable part of the whole. With the exponential evolution of technology, it is important to understand if this elderly audience has the ability to adopt new technologies and if they can use the systems embedded in these new devices, such as smartphones. The hypothesis recorded in this research is that even being mobile users, the elderly has difficulty understanding interface objects, interfering the interaction with mobile applications. The objective of this research is to analyze the quality of the usability of mobile applications by elderly people and the understanding of interface objects (graphical elements that have different functionalities and that make up the interface of the mobile applications). The volunteers participated in a demographic questionnaire to specify the participants profile, a comprehensibility test and a usability test to assess the audience s ability to interpret and interact with these new systems. And, in the end, they answered a debriefing questionnaire to record information about the experience of these users group with the tests applied. Finally, the result achieved with the research conducted partially denied the proposed hypothesis and strengthened the understanding that the elderly user, for the most part, has the cognitive and semantic ability to understand and interact with applications developed for Apple s iOS operating system.

Abstract:
One of the most undervalued problems by smartphone users is the security of data on their mobile devices. Today smartphones and tablets are used to send messages and photos and especially to stay connected with social networks, forums and other platforms. These devices contain a lot of private information like passwords, phone numbers, private photos, emails, etc. and an attacker may choose to steal or destroy this information. The main topic of this thesis is the security of the applications present on the most popular stores (App Store for iOS and Play Store for Android) and of their mechanisms for the management of security. The analysis is focused on how the architecture of the two systems protects users from threats and highlights the real presence of malware and spyware in their respective application stores. The work described in subsequent chapters explains the study of the behavior of 50 Android applications and 50 iOS applications performed using network analysis software. Furthermore, this thesis presents some statistics about malware and spyware present on the respective stores and the permissions they require. At the end the reader will be able to understand how to recognize malicious applications and which of the two systems is more suitable for him. This is how this thesis is structured. The first chapter introduces the security mechanisms of the Android and iOS platform architectures and the security mechanisms of their respective application stores. The Second chapter explains the work done, what, why and how we have chosen the tools needed to complete our analysis. The third chapter discusses about the execution of tests, the protocol followed and the approach to assess the “level of danger” of each application that has been checked. The fourth chapter explains the results of the tests and introduces some statistics on the presence of malicious applications on Play Store and App Store. The fifth chapter is devoted to the study of the users, what they think about and how they might avoid malicious applications. The sixth chapter seeks to establish, following our methodology, what application store is safer. In the end, the seventh chapter concludes the thesis.

Abstract:
The innovation progress for municipalities is currently going slowly. Today most of the communication, decision-making, delegation and service of process are still handled via letter mail or phone calls. Companies and municipalities are starting to comprehend this and see opportunities. With the technology that exists today it is possible to speed up the processes when citizens and municipalities comunicate with each other. By migrating from the old way of applying and filing different matters by letter mail to so-called digital e-services, the citizen can apply, complement and get info on how their matter is going directly on the web. Abou AB works with optimizing information handling for municipalities and has recently made it possible for municipalities to eliminate their tedious way of handling matters by traceable web communication. They have a vision to take this to a new level of easement to the municipalities and their citizens by offering these services in mobile phones as so-called apps. One of these contemplated services is to file error reports. The service will offer the citizen to send in a report with attached meta data such as photo and the location of the regarding matter. This will be done by the mobile phones built in hardware in form of camera and GPS. This master’s thesis will describe the work to develop a prototype for filing an error reports in mobile phones that support Android and iOS operating systems. The goal for this thesis work is to develop this prototype by means of a process tool called Kanban and investigate if the tool fits the situation properly. The situation is that two persons will work in parallel with slightly different projects. Also the quality and usability of the resulting prototype applications is asserted with qualitative evaluations that results in higher awareness of the defects and suggestions on how to reform and improve the application in a usability point of view. The actual implementation work was planned according to a slightly loose Kan- ban paradigm. Kanban is all about improvements along the way and the im- plementation phase is divided into smaller phases with sub goals and recurring process evaluations. Suggestions of improvement regarding the work processes is a result of this. A Kanban board that helps visualize the workflow is used to help team members and project owners to get a good overview of current situa- tions. Several adjustments were made throughout the project and the so-called lead times, the time it takes to complete a task, was shortened in average from the beginning of the project compared to the end of the project. Each phase in the implementation part of the thesis work resulted in different functionalities in the application. A phase was two weeks long and ended with a demo were the new functionality was demonstrated. Prior to each demo session everyone at the company where the thesis work was performed was invited. The participants in these sessions were encouraged to give feedback on what they saw to help increase the quality of the applications. The prototype applications resulted in a more easy accessible service to citizens. By cutting out the process steps that previously needed to been done on a computer the 1application contributes to the possibility of an increased democratization grade for the citizen. The investigation regarding if the Kanban process tool was a suitable aid in the implementation part of the project resulted in that it was suitable for the specific situation. By measuring both lead times and other activities that did not concern the implementation work and plot them in a diagram explained why some weeks did not have as high productivity as others. To assert the awareness and quality of the developed applications in terms of usability a so-called heuristic evaluation was performed. This qualitative eval- uation resulted in a set of usability problems. These problems were all graded into different priority to be solved and some was given suggestions on how to be solved. The main purpose with this evaluation was to find the problems and document them to possible future programmers if the prototype will go into production. The result of this evaluation has increased the usability of the application and consequently the quality.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Engenharia de Computadores e Telemática
The smartphone market in recent years has grown sharply and with it the possibilities to mobile devices programmers have also grown. This expanding market is currently dominated by two operating systems: Android and iOS. Although these two have a big share of the market (91% of the smartphones sales in 2012 were from one of these two systems) is in the programmer interest to develop applications that are compatible with the largest number of devices and operating systems possible. Companies like PT Inovação have great interest in this market and want to have at their disposal the best tools available to develop application that can attract customers. As such, this dissertation is a study, proposed by PT Inovação, of a method for the development of mobile applications, which makes easier to create applications compatible with several devices and systems. The aforementioned method is the development of mobile applications based on web technologies (HTML5, CSS and Javascript). To study this method several mobiles hybrid applications were developed based in applications already developed, by PT Inovação, using native technology. After the development phase, it was made a comparative study between the hybrid and the native applications, to comprehend which ones had better performance, were easier to develop and had more appealing design, for the several elements that constituted the applications. The conclusions of this study are the main result of the dissertation.

Abstract:
Purpose – To examine if there is any difference regarding performance between the two frameworks Ionic and React Native to ease decisions which one to use when developing mobile applications. Method – A comparative study with hypothesis based on earlier studies are tested with different experiments. Findings – Ionic is performing faster in the majority of the experiments, but at the same time its CPU and memory usage is higher. The results also show that React Native is struggling with larger data-sets. Implications – The study is contributing to a wider knowledge about cross-platform frameworks performance, and therefore facilitates the choice on which framework is more preferable to use. Limitations – The study only includes Ionic and React Native, and no conclusions can therefore be applied to any other cross-platform frameworks. The results are not generalizable to cross- platform native vs cross-platform hybrid, or Android vs IOS

Abstract:
Rephotography has been a popular research topic in the photography field for a long time. The purpose of rephotography itself is to repeatedly take photographs of the same scene at a different time. As a result, the sequence of rephotographs with the reference, often historical, the picture provides a compelling visualization of the evolution of the subject or capture its changes in time. However, the act of rephotography is difficult for the rephotographers as they have to cope with the ambiguous motions in six degrees of freedom and with the changes of the subject itself or its surrounding environment.        This thesis aims to create a mobile application that would help its users to capture a rephotograph more accurately and allow them to share the scenes amongst other users. The designed application uses available on-device sensors to navigate the user to the location and guide the user during the rephotography process to capture a precise rephotograph. Furthermore, the application contains user interface elements designed explicitly for rephotography. Moreover, the work describes topics about user interface design, iOS application development, and designing and deploying backend API for the mobile application.

Abstract:
During the last ten years the market for smartphones has grown drastically. Because of the current state of the market with different operating systems many smartphone applications need to be developed for several platforms. With this thesis, the goal was ultimately to contribute to the understanding of cross-platform development as a way of developing smartphone applications. React Native has been evaluated as a framework with which development is done for both Android and iOS using the same code. To study React Native as a framework, a smartphone application for Android and iOS was developed at an Uppsala based IT-company with expertise in web services, smartphone applications, and online gaming. Furthermore, performance tests and user tests were conducted in which React Native was compared to native applications and applications developed using Xamarin (similar cross-platform development framework owned by Microsoft). It was evident that using the same code for both Android and iOS was time saving. However, the performance tests results showed that applications developed with React Native did not perform as well as the native and Xamarin versions. Leading to the conclusion that choice of framework when developing cross-platform applications need to take into consideration performance, development time, and programming language preference.

Abstract:
Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are very common at companies nowadays, where they’re not just used for communication but also for doing work. Not all tools are available for such devices though, or at least not in a suitable form that makes it practical to use them. Semko Instrument Register (SIR) is a such a system, developed by Triona, in the form of a website that is not adapted for mobile devices, which is used for downloading calibration certificates for measuring instruments among other things. The goal of this project is to come up with a method of making the system available to as many mobile devices as possible in the simplest way possible. Different methods (websites adapted for mobile devices, native applications and cross-platform applications) are compared and analysed with a focus on possibilities for sharing code on multiple platforms and whether they’re able to fulfill what is required of the application. The design chapter presents such a method which is then evaluated on different aspects, such as the amount of code that can be shared between platforms. The conclusion is that the best way of making a system available on multiple platforms is through websites adapted for mobile devices, but because of this particular system’s requirements a cross-platform solution called Ionic was used instead, as modern mobile browsers are not yet able to fulfill what was required of the application.

Abstract:

In an IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) network there are Application Servers (ASs) which host and execute services. These are often SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) servers. The goal for this thesis was to evaluate a selection of open source SIP ASs to see which one was most suited for IMS service development.

Ten different SIP ASs was found in an initial search. They were briefly reviewed and some of them were chosen as candidates for further investigation.

The documentation of the chosen servers were thoroughly explored and evaluated; as was the installation process and how to deploy a service to them.

Finally the servers were installed and a service was implemented and deployed to an IMS network.

Unfortunately, I could not point out one of the ASs to be more suited than another for deploying an IMS service on. This was because they had different pros and cons and none of them were distinguishing in a way that made them superior to the other.

Abstract:
Mobile technology has become much more prevalent in our daily lives, including the lives of young children. Kids are exposed to tablets and phones before they have learned how to read. There are quite a few applications that exist that provide entertainment for such a young audience. However, not all of them are educational applications that teach the user something useful. Such an educational app has been developed for the purposes of providing learning opportunities that will both improve the user’s mind as well as create an engaging and fun experience. The final product resulted in AlphaBoodle, an educational iOS app for kids, ages two to four. The goal of the app is to teach the identification of letters as well as how to write them. This paper steps through the process of creating AlphaBoodle and evaluates the final product through previous research and user testing.

Abstract:
As smart devices become more prevalent, children have increasing access to them - and at younger ages than ever before. This presents the opportunity to harness this time they spend on the devices by creating educational applications that can both entertain and teach. Our goal was to create an application that would introduce young children to the alphabet and begin to teach them how to write letters. The result, AlphaBoodle, is an iOS application aimed at children ages two through four who have not yet begun to read. It was designed using general iOS application principles, educational research about how children use technology, and methods that teachers utilize to introduce children to the alphabet. The current version of AlphaBoodle is a proof-of- concept of the feasibility of such a project; testing has shown that it appears to be a worthwhile endeavor. In the future we hope to complete the application and release it to the public.

Full text
Abstract:
Work in demanding postures is a known risk factor for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), specifically work with elevated arms may cause neck/shoulder disorders. Such a disorder is a tragedy for the individual, and costly for society. Technical measurements are more precise in estimating the work exposure, than observation and self-reports, and there is a need for uncomplicated methods for risk assessments. The aim of this project was to develop and validate an iOS application for measuring arm elevation angle. Such an application was developed, based on the built-in accelerometer and gyroscope of the iPhone/iPod Touch. The application was designed to be self-exploratory. Directly after a measurement, 10th, 50th and 90th percentiles of angular distribution and median angular velocity, and percentage of time above 30°, 60°, and 90° are presented. The focused user group, ergonomists, was consulted during the user interface design phase. Complete angular datasets may be exported via email as text files for further analyses. The application was validated by comparison to the output of an optical motion capture system for four subjects. The two methods correlated above 0.99, with absolute error below 4.8° in arm flexion and abduction positions. During arm swing movements, the average root-mean-square differences (RMSDs) were 3.7°, 4.6° and 6.5° for slow (0.1 Hz), medium (0.4 Hz) and fast (0.8 Hz) arm swings, respectively. For simulated painting, the mean RMSDs was 5.5°. Since the accuracy was similar to other tested field research methods, this convenient and “low-cost” application should be useful for ergonomists, for risk assessments or educational use. The plan is to publish this iOS application on Apple Store (Apple Inc.) for free. New user feedback may further improve the user interface.

Abstract:
The use of smartphone applications has taken over the way people interact with the world. The design of an application has become an important aspect in keeping the user engaged [22]. People are looking for applications that are easy to use and will get the job done. This thesis focuses on the design of a mobile application for iOS that recommends wine in various retail locations that match a user’s taste preferences. The goals of this thesis are to design an iOS application that recommends wine to consumers, improve upon the wine recommendation algorithms by acquiring more customer data, and analyze the market for consumer and retail need for such a wine recommendation system. The mobile implementation developed for this thesis will be used by a startup based in San Luis Obispo called The Bottlefly. The application will supplement a similar in-store kiosk version to reach wine consumers outside of retail locations in hopes of bringing them into retail locations to purchase wine. Multiple studies are presented to show the results of acquiring customer data for the wine recommendation system as well as user interface usability studies to acquire data about the usability of the application. Usability factors such as ease of use, application completeness, and willingness to use are measured and analyzed in this thesis. The results will help propel the application forward to make sure it meets customer expectations in order to get it ready for production in retail locations and the App Store.

Lanzoni, Silvia. "A Unified Application Programming Interface for Bundle Protocol Applications." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2022. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/25727/.

Full text
Abstract:
Next space missions should rely on the DTN architecture and its associated Bundle Protocol (BP) to cope with the challenges faced by interplanetary links, such as long delays and disruption. This has led to new BP implementations or new releases, incorporating version 7, recently standardized by IETF. Although positive per se, this has exacerbated an already existing fragmentation problem, as every implementation has its own API and its own set of bundle options supported, which is a significant obstacle to the development of third party applications. To alleviate this problem, a new “abstracted” API for bundle protocol applications, called Unified API, has been developed during this thesis, and it is presented here. The Unified API is a complete refactoring of the old “Abstraction Layer”. As the predecessor it aims to decouple a DTN application from the BP implementations, with great advantages in terms of portability, maintenance and interoperability. However, the Unified API is more ambitious and it has the goal to present also a new API, now much closer to the familiar UDP socket and, more generally, to facilitate the development of new DTN applications as much as possible. To obtain this, the whole structure has been organized in three layers, of which only the top one is seen by applications. This layer consists of four blocks, of which the most important is the “Socket” block. The other blocks provide the programmer with high-level tools to create and modify a bundle, to parse the input string, to implement conditional prints etc. The Unified API is compatible with most BP implementations (DTN2/DTNME, ION, IBR-DTN, µD3TN). As them, it is released as free software and it is going to replace its predecessors in the next release of the DTNsuite, the Unibo collection of DTN applications included in ION, the DTN implementation by NASA JPL. The hope is that the Unified API will encourage third-party programmers, thus contributing to the success of DTN networking.

Abstract:
Nowadays, Agile software development methods are often used in large multisite organizations that develop large-scale applications. Behavior Driven Development (BDD) is a relatively new Agile software development process where the development process starts with acceptance tests written in a natural language. The premise of BDD is to create a common and effective process of communication between different roles in a software project to ensure that every activity can be mapped to the business goal of the application. This thesis work aims to find an effective and efficient BDD process and to evaluate its usage in a large-scale application in a large multisite organization through a series of interviews, a controlled experiment, and an online survey. Furthermore, by means of the aforementioned experiment, the study measures the impact of an experimental usage of BDD on testing quality. To discover an effective and efficient BDD process, two alternatives with automated tests that run on different architectural layers, namely client layer and web service layer, were examined. Based on the defined metrics, the alternative with automated tests that ran directly on the web service layer was chosen as the more efficient process which was compared against the existing Agile-based baseline that used automated client tests. The results show that an efficient BDD process improves the testing quality significantly which can, in turn, result in a better overall software quality.

Abstract:
The iPhone has become a top selling smartphone since its launch in 2007 and has along with its iOS (Apple's mobile operating system) overtaken many popular and established mobile phone brands in the ratings. Some competitors have not been able to provide a competing smartphone while others have grouped together to withstand the Apple onslaught. There are probably quite a few reasons why the iPhone has become such a success, and one could likely write a report solely about those reasons. I will focus on one of them in this study, maybe one of the most important reasons: the iPhone came with a revolutionizing user interface. I have studied iOS applications and their user interface components along with related research in order to try and find out what exactly makes it so attractive and also to uncover any flaws I might stumble across along the way. In order to answer this, and to gain a better insight into the iOS, I have developed an iPhone application from scratch covering all of the basic functionality usually found in any other iPhone application. The results will show that most of it seems to relate with Apple enforcing very strict rules and guidelines, along with limitations placed on the developer and the process as a whole. This strict process ends with Apple evaluators performing a review of the finished product, using their guidelines as heuristics. These guidelines will be proven to have scientific credibility, and the controlled development process will be a key to defining the iOS success.

Abstract:
A nuclear microprobe, typically consisting of 2 - 4 quadrupole magnetic lenses and apertures serving as objective and a collimating divergence slits, focuses MeV ions to approximately 1 x 1 μm for modification and analysis of materials. Although far less utilized, electrostatic quadrupole fields similarly afford strong focusing of ions and have the added benefit of doing so independent of ion mass. Instead, electrostatic quadrupole focusing exhibits energy dependence on focusing ions. A heavy ion microprobe could extend the spatial resolution of conventional microprobe techniques to masses untenable by quadrupole magnetic fields. An electrostatic quadrupole doublet focusing system has been designed and constructed using several non-conventional methods and materials for a wide range of microprobe applications. The system was modeled using the software package "Propagate Rays and Aberrations by Matrices" which quantifies system specific parameters such as demagnification and intrinsic aberrations. Direct experimental verification was obtained for several of the parameters associated with the system. Details of the project and with specific applications of the system are presented.
