The fragmentation mechanism of ionized neopentanol, (CH$\sb3$)$\sb3$CCH$\sb2$OH$\sp{+-}$, has been studied in great detail along with other C$\sb5$H$\sb $H$\sp{+-}$ isomers. The use of $\sp $C and D labelling was found an essential tool to establish the relation between the other species involved in the dissociation of neopentanol. The involvement of (CH$\sb3$)$\sb2$C$\sp{\cdot}$CH$\sb2\sp+$(O)HCH$\sb3$, (CH$\sb3$)$\sb3$C$\sp+$(O)HCH$\sb2$ and (CH$\sb3$)$\sb2$($\sp\cdot$CH$\sb2$)CCH$\sb2\sp+$OH$\sb2$ was essential to explain the H/D label exchange occurring upon fragmentation of neopentyl alcohol. An ion-dipole complex between methanol and ionized methyl propene is proposed as the final intermediate which leads directly to the products, methanol and ionized methyl propene. The results of the investigation of C$\sb7$H$\sb5\sp+$ ions from various precursor molecules are also described. The following compounds, which all produce C$\sb7$H$\sb5\sp+$ ions, were studied: benzyl acetate, benzyl formate, benzyl alcohol, 2-bromocyclopropabenzene, 1,6-heptadiyne and 1,5-decadiyne. According to the metastable ion (MI) mass spectra and the He collision induced dissociation (CID) of m/z 89 ions, it is suggested that four structures exist. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Understanding ion and fluid transport through highly confined nanochannels is important for the study of many interesting phenomena in nature and for the design of novel nanofluidic devices. Molecular dynamics has been proved to be a powerful tool to investigate the transport of ion and fluid in nanochannels, however, the results of molecular dynamics simulation depend on the selection of intermolecular potentials in the simulation. In this work, we applied two different ionwater interaction potentials to study their effects in the molecular dynamics simulation of ion distribution in the nanochannels between two parallel charged surfaces. Water was simulated with the TIP4P and SPC/E models and the electrostatic interaction between ions, water molecules, and surface charges was modeled by using Ewald summation algorithm with the slab correction. Two different interaction potentials between the ion and water molecules, one based on simple Lennard-Jones potential and the other based on the Bounds' ion-water potential, were adopted to explore the effects of ion-water interactions on the ion distribution in nanochannels. The Bounds' model takes into account the interactions between ions and both oxygen and hydrogen atoms in the water molecules. Ion concentration profiles in nanochannels with these two different potentials were calculated and results showed that the ion-water interaction potential could significantly affect the ion distribution in nanochannels. We expect that the ion-water potential could also have important effect on modeling of electroosmotic flow through nanochannels.

Abstract:
For high rate-capability and low cost lithium-ion batteries, the prevention of capacity loss is one of major challenges facing by lithium-ion batteries today. During electrochemical processes, lithium ions diffuse from and insert into battery electrodes accompanied with the phase transformation, where ionic diffusivity and concentration are keys to the resultant battery capacity. In the current study, we first compare voltage vs. capacity curves at different C-rates (1C, 2C, 6C, 10C). Second, lithium-ion distributions and intensity are quantified via the Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS). The result shows that voltage vs. capacity relations are C-rate dependent and larger hystereses are observed in the higher C-rate samples. Detailed quantification of lithium-ion intensity for the 1C sample is conducted. It is observed that lithium-ions are distributed uniformly inside the electrode. Therefore, the current study provides a qualitative and quantitative data to better understand C-rate dependent phenomenon of LiFePO4 battery cells.

The development of methods to modify materials based on the synergistic high-intensity implantation and simultaneous energy impact on the ion-doped layer involves using the pulsed and repetitively-pulsed beams of metal and gas ion beams with micro-submillisecond duration with high pulsed power density. The paper presents the results of experimental studies on the formation of pulsed and repetitively-pulsed high-intensity beams of titanium ions with a pulse duration from 150 to 500 μs. The plasma flow was generated by a vacuum arc discharge. To obtain ion beams with a power density in the range from several tens to several hundreds of kilowatts per square centimeter, ballistic focusing of ions was used using an extracting grid electrode in the form of a part of a sphere. The features of the forming the high-power repetitively-pulsed beams of titanium ions were studied using both the ion source “Rainbow 5”. Data are presented on the influence of the ion beam space charge neutralization processes at current densities from fractions to several amperes per square centimeter on the efficiency of the ion beam’s transport and focusing at accelerating voltages from 10 to 30 kV.

Abstract:
The characteristics of radiation potentially available from proposed rf-linac free electron lasers1 are considered here for precision spectroscopy of highly-charged ions. Such ions are usually produced in environments not conducive to precision measurements, such as high temperature plasmas or fast ion beams. However, highly-charged recoil ions with eV energies have been produced by impact of fast, stripped ions on atomic targets2, and, using synchrotron radiation, multi-charged ions have been formed at thermal energies by K-shell photoionization followed by Auger emission and electron shake-off3. Using each of these cold ion sources, multi-charged ions have been stored under ultra-high vacuum conditions in Penning4,5 or radio-frequency6 ion traps, while maintaining the low energies at which the ions were generated. Long term storage at low energy in a near perturbation-free environment is consequently a reality for multi-charged ions, and experiments can be designed to exploit these properties for both spectroscopic7 and collision8 measurements. In particular, we discuss precision measurements on hydrogen-like multi-charged ions analagous to measurements on singly-charged alkalai-like ion hyperfine structures made using conventional pulsed laser techniques.9 Precision measurements of interest include, for example, studies of the Z-dependence of the Lamb shift in hydrogen-like and helium-like ions, and studies of the fine structure of helium-like ion n=2 states.

Processes that use energetic ions for large substrates require that the time-averaged erosion effects from the ion flux be uniform across the surface. A numerical model has been developed to determine this flux and its effects on surface etching of a silica/photoresist combination. The geometry of the source and substrate is very similar to a typical deposition geometry with single or planetary substrate rotation. The model was used to tune an inert ion-etching process that used single or multiple Kaufman sources1 to less than 3% uniformity over a 30-cm aperture after etching 8 μm of material. The same model can be used to predict uniformity for ion-assisted deposition (IAD).
