Davies, Aled. The City of London and the Politics of ‘Invisibles’. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198804116.003.0004.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the resurgence of the City of London as an international financial centre in the late twentieth century. It highlights the role played by a campaign to promote the revival of the City as a post-sterling international financial centre. The Committee on Invisible Exports campaigned for the recognition of the City’s contribution to Britain’s balance of payments through its ‘invisible earnings’, and argued that this could be increased by reducing impediments on its activities. The invisibles campaign was a distinct product of the post-war preoccupation with the balance of payments, which challenged the fundamental belief, embedded in economic policy since the war, that the route to national prosperity was in expanding industrial production. The campaign sought to reconceptualize Britain as a historic commercial and financial, rather than industrial, economy. In doing so it undercut a core principle on which the social democratic political–economic project was based.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the centrality of the invisible church for Bunyan and his readers. Called to lead the Bedford congregation in 1671, Bunyan was committed to defending and building the visible church, but its purpose was to nurture souls on the pilgrimage to heaven, the invisible church of glory whose members were known only by God. Doctrinal works on the theology of justification, polemical works on ‘things indifferent’ (such as baptism) or on essentials of faith, and pastoral works on the spiritual conditions of his readers, all attest to Bunyan’s single-minded focus on the invisible church in the 1670s. Religious toleration, like the visible church, was not a good in itself but a means to an end: the ‘desired countrey’ of union with God, the imagined community outside of time that made the present an interval of remembrance and anticipation.

Soyer, Michaela. Lost Childhoods. University of California Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1525/california/9780520296701.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Lost Childhoods focuses on the life-course histories of thirty young men serving time in the adult prison system in Pennsylvania for crimes they committed when they were minors. The narratives of these young men, their friends, and relatives reveal the invisible yet deep-seated connection between the childhood traumas they suffered and the violent criminal behavior they committed during adolescence. By living through domestic violence, poverty, the crack epidemic, and other circumstances, these men were forced to grow up fast, while familial ties that should have sustained them were broken at each turn. The book connects large-scale social policy decisions and their effect on family dynamics, and it demonstrates the limits of punitive justice.

Abstract:
In this book, I analyse how torture committed during the War in Iraq and under the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile was documented and dramatised across a range of material, including photographs, nonfiction films and television series. Beyond addressing the representational ethics of such images, my work explores affect as critical mode. I demonstrate how some audiovisual texts succeed in making emotional and collective consequences of torture experientially available to the audience, thereby expanding epistemological approaches towards torture to include such long-term and seemingly ‘invisible’ repercussions.
