Abstract:
A microcomputer risk analysis model is developed and used in an exploration - delineation simulation to analyse in particular the effects of geological factors on exploration mining investment alternatives. Analysis of results indicate that geological parameters can have profound effects on such investment alternatives and that the role of the geologist in determining and evaluating the significance of the various geological factors is critical. Simulation examples highlight some of the key geological parameters and show how changes in these parameters influence both the expected mean results and the standard deviations of such means. The risk analysis model provides an ideal means of conveying the importance of the different geoiogical factors on exploration - delineation - mining investment alternatives and may be used as a geological education aid

Brink, Charlotte H. "Measuring political risk as risks to foreign investment : a computer-assisted model for analysing and managing political risk." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52929.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As the title suggests, the major challenge that this study faces is to set out and design a model for analysing and enabling the management of political risk as investment risk - a model that is both sensitive to and reflective of the comprehensive business and investment climate in a country, not only credit or country risk, or only pure political risk in its narrowest definition. In reading about past and more recent research in the field of political risk analysis, it becomes clear that many authors begin by noting the diversity and the discrepancies of the existing definitions of political risk, but evidence in political risk insurance shows that the major perceived political risks that investors insure their interests against seem to be confiscation, expropriation and nationalisation. In the light of this study's findings though, a case can be put forward for urging that the conceptualisation of political risk be extended to further include any or all of the micro political risk factors and their indicators that have been identified to ensure that political events do not impact negatively on a foreign company's profitability. Foreign investors put assets at risk to achieve their objectives and the assessment of these risks, including political risks, is the key to successful operations. Opportunities and risks are often two sides of the same coin and political risk comprises a large part of the environmental forces in terms of the management challenges a Multinational Company (MNC) faces in any investment climate. A firm's foreign investment strategy deals with the positioning of the organisation in an uncertain host country environment and investment climate. This study attempts to explain how a firm's political risk exposure, which refers to the sensitivity of a firm's projected profitability and operationability in a host country to changes in the investment climate, could be managed and reduced. It is hoped that political risk analysis and management can assist foreign operations in managing the risks that might have otherwise proven to be destructive to profitability and operationability. It is irresponsible to present a potential investor with a risk assessment that does not incorporate political risk factors and their indicators, let alone environmental, societal and socio-economic risk factor indicators. Ultimately any business climate, regardless of the country being studied, is underwritten by a political system, political climate, political culture and business culture of the system in which foreign business wishes to operate profitably. What is often labelled as unnecessary and irrelevant detail in risk analysis often results in a lack of using micro risk factors and their indicators and an underestimation of the importance of such micro risk indicators. Hopefully this study takes up the challenge of showing that political risk can be managed and political risk analysis can be made more precise - that it is possible to measure and manage political risk.

Full text
Abstract:
Fossil tracks represent the only direct record of behaviour and locomotion of extinct animals. A computer model using finite element analysis (FEA) has been developed to simulate vertebrate track formation in cohesive substrates. This model has been designed for, and successfully run on, high performance computing (HPC) resources. A number of individual studies were carried out using the computer model to simulate both abstract indenters and virtual dinosaur autopodia. In addition to the simulation studies, two fossil tracks were described, including the first report of bird tracks at the Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, South Dakota (USA) and a re-description of a 'dinosaur tail drag' as the trace of a crocodilian. Using the computer model, it has been shown that in a wet, soft mud the indentation of a non-webbed virtual tridactyl foot created a resultant track with features analogous to 'webbing' between digits. This 'webbing' was a function of sediment deformation and subsequent failure in 3D, specific to rheology. Apparent webbing impressions were clearly developed only within a limited range of sediment conditions and pedal geometry. Indenter (pedal) geometry and morphology affect track depth independently of substrate and loading parameters. More complex morphologies interact with the cohesive substrate creating a lower effective load than that applied. In non-cohesive substrates such as sand, this effect is reversed, and it is the more compact morphologies that indent to a lesser degree. Virtual sauropod tracks were modelled, based on published soft tissue reconstructions of autopodia anatomy, and published mass/centre of mass estimates. It was shown that foot morphology and differential loading between fore- and hind- limbs leads to a range of substrates in which only the manus or pes are able to generate tracks. This offers a new mechanism for the formation of manus-only sauropod trackways, previously interpreted as having been made by swimming dinosaurs. A series of tracks were simulated using input data (loads, pedal morphologies) from four different dinosaurs (Brachiosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Struthiomimus, and Edmontosaurus). The cohesive substrates used displayed a 'Goldilocks' effect, allowing the formation for tracks only for a very limited range of loads for any given foot. In addition, there was a strong bias toward larger animals, both in homogeneous and theoretically heterogeneous substrates. These findings imply that interpretations from track assemblages must consider that only a small proportion of the total fauna present may be recorded as a track assemblage due to substrate properties. The use of FEA to simulate dinosaur track formation has been shown to be successful, and offers a number of advantages over physical modelling including; consistency between experiments, specific control over input variables, rapid undertaking of repeatable experiments, and the ability to view subsurface deformation non-destructively. It is hoped that this work will lead to an increased interest in modelling tracks, and offer a quantitative method for studying fossil tracks.

Nanocrystalline nickel-tungsten alloys are harder, stronger, more resistant to degradation, and safer to electrodeposit than chromium. Atomistic computer simulations have previously met with success in replicating the energetic and atomic conditions of physical systems with 2-4nm grain diameters. Here, a new model subjects a vertically thin unique volume containing 3nm or 10nm FCC grains with aligned z axes to a Monte Carlo-type minimization to investigate the segregation and ordering behavior of W atoms. Short-range order is also tracked with the Warren-Cowley parameter, and energetic results are explored as well. It was found that the Ni-W system has a very strong tendency toward SRO. The 10nm models exhibited more robust order at low concentrations, but ordering in the 3nm model was generally more pronounced. At the dilute limit atoms are driven to the grain boundaries, but as the boundaries are saturated intragranular ordered formations increase and may even perpetuate over low-angle grain boundaries. Ordering was also observed within the grain boundaries at all concentrations for both diameters. The 10nm models were saturated at lower concentration, and grain boundary energy was reduced by up to 93%. W atoms preferred to associate with each other as third-nearest neighbors, but at very high concentrations formations with W atoms as second nearest neighbors were also observed.

Abstract:

Investor confidence is a concept many investors are constantly trying to gauge. In practice however these concepts are usually not easy to measure. This study attempts to capture the total sum of investor perception in South Africa by examining market behaviour. Data from the JSE/FTSE (1995-2009) will be used to determine an Equity Risk Premium. Bond Yield Spreads will also be calculated from data provided by I-NET BRIDGE. An amalgamation of these components will produce the proposed Investment Confidence Index. Similar indices currently on the South African Market are based on subjective surveys and might therefore be biased. The proposed index which is a first in SA will prove invaluable to practitioners in the financial sector.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to examine the applicability of computer vision to analyze pedestrian and crowd characteristics, and how pedestrain simulation for shopping environments can be driven from the visual perception of the simulated pedestrians. More specifically, two frameworks for pedestrian speed profile estimation are designed and implemented. The first address the problem of speed estimation for people moving parallel to the image plane on a flat surface, while the other tries to estimate the speed of people walking on stairs moving while their trajectories and being perpendicular on the image plane. Both approaches aim to localise the foot of the pedestrains, and by identifying their steps measure their speed. Except from measuring the speed of pedestrains, a crowd counting system using Convolutional Neural Networks is created by exploiting the background spatial persistence of a whole image in the temporal domain, and furthermore by fusing consecutive temporal counting information in the systme further refines its estimates. Finally a novel memory-free cognitive framework for pedestrian shopping behaviour is presented where the simulated pedestrians use as route choice model their visual perception. Agents moving in an environment and equipped with an activity agenda. use their vision to select not only their root choices but also the shops that they visit.

Abstract:
The measurement of bioelectric signals, e.g. the electrocardiogram and electromyogram (EMG), from the body is susceptible to noise, artefacts and interference; such as power-line interference. To reduce these effects differential-input amplifiers are commonly used. Rejection is further enhanced by implementing a referencing system into the design, such as connecting a third electrode to circuit common or driving the shields. However, there has been no quantitative study into the relative merits of the different systems. For this reason, an experimental analysis and computer simulation was undertaken. In the experimental tests, a rig and instrumentation system were developed to record the surface isometric EMG from biceps brachii. Published referencing systems were used in the trials and the recorded signals were quantified using repeatable parameters. These were calculated from the frequency domain and included the median frequency and a measure of the spectral power distribution. The results showed a significant reduction in the interference when a third electrode or isolation was used. No further reduction was observed if a more complex circuit, such as a driven referencing system, was used. In the computer simulation, a SPICE computer model of the recording environment was developed. This included the preamplifier and the interference sources from displacement currents induced into the leads and the body. The different referencing systems were incorporated within this basic structure. The results confirmed those from the experimental work and, by comparison to a 1% tolerance criterion, it was concluded that the driven-right leg or the three electrode driven shield isolated systems were superior. It is concluded that referencing significantly affects interference levels on the bioelectric signal. These results may be used to facilitate a standard system to be adopted in bioelectric amplifiers. The implication for this in clinical practice is that it may improve the measurement of bioelectric signals.

Mansour, Saeed. "A computer package for simulation and analysis of rotary forging." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1988. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/28853/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the development of a software package to simulate and graphically represent the tool/workpiece kinematics in rotary forging. A hypothetical workpiece of non-constant volume is always used. Share changes are achieved by a process of material removal, analogous to metal cutting. Using a quantitative approach, the software is shown to be capable of calculating the tool/workpiece instantaneous contact zone and the volume of material being removed. The software has been developed and used to produce an analysis of radially configurated conic tools. This is believed to be a unique approach to the simulation of the rotary forging process. Various types of rotary forging machines can be identified by the motion of the conic tool and the hypothetical workpiece. A mathematical/ geometrical model is developed which can be used to simulate all possible rotary forging die motions. The model is used to determine the position in space of any point on the die, regardless of its motion and geometry. The software development has been used to graphically simulate the loci of points on a die, during movement of the die. The mathematical model is used to simulate a non-constant volume workpiece consisting of a large number of concentric cylinders of specified height and radius, with infinitesimal thickness. The interaction between tool and workpiece is achieved by using a method of geometric comparison. This allows an assessment of changes in the shape of the workpiece. Extension of the program, using a generated mesh, results in a numerical analysis of the rotary forging process. The data generated from the simulation phase, incorporating some previously developed software, is used to calculate the instantaneous area of contact and the volume of material being removed. Radially configurated tooling is achieved by the introduction of a database, into the software package. Guidelines are established for the practical design of radially configurated tools. The ability of the program to interact radially configurated tools with non-constant volume workpieces, is graphically/numerically investigated. The developed program could offer many potential applications in areas such as: the calculation of forming loads and stresses, pressure distribution, etc. Further, the program can establish some basic boundary conditions; which are essential information for the development of any finite element package for predicting metal flow in rotary forging.

Full text
Abstract:
Frequency Domain Experiments (FDEs) were first used in discrete-event simulation to perform system parameter sensitivity analysis for factor screening in stochastic system simulations. FDEs are based on the intuitive assertion that if one or more system parameters are oscillated at fixed frequencies throughout a simulation run, then oscillations at the same frequencies will be induced in the system's response. Spectral (Fourier) analysis of these induced oscillations is then used to characterize and analyze the system. Since their introduction 12 years ago, significant work has been done to extend the applicability of FDEs to regression analysis, simulation optimization and gradient estimation. Two fundamental theoretical and data analysis FDE problems remain, however. Both problems are addressed in this dissertation.;To perform a FDE Fourier analysis, a sampled data sequence of response observations is used; i.e., the selected system response is sampled using a suitable oscillation (sampling) index. The choice of an appropriate oscillation index is an open problem in the literature known as the FDE indexing problem. This dissertation presents a solution to the FDE indexing problem. Specifically, a FDE Fourier data analysis algorithm is developed which uses the simulation clock as the oscillation index. This algorithm is based on the well-established theory of counting (Poisson) processes. The algorithm is implemented and tested on a variety of systems including several networks of nonstationary M/G/1 queues.;To justify the use of Fourier methods, a basic FDE model assumption is that if a particular system response statistic is sensitive to a system parameter, then sinusoidal variation of that system parameter at a fixed frequency will induce similar sinusoidal variations in the response statistic, at the same frequency. There is, however, a lack of theoretical support for this model assumption. This dissertation provides some of that theoretical support; i.e., the FDE Fourier data analysis algorithm developed in this dissertation is used to analyze the frequency response of a M/M/1 queuing system. An equation is derived which accurately characterizes the extent to which the departure process from a M/M/1 queuing system can be modeled as an amplitude-modulated, phase-shifted version of the oscillated arrival process.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the design of a two-dimensional phononic band gap crystal simulator, and phononic crystal analysis.

Phononic crystals and their application to microwave acoustic filters are studied. Wave mechanics is introduced. A two-dimensional phononic crystal simulator is developed. Simulator operation is validated through comparison with published data. Design parameters for phononic crystal band gap engineering are outlined. Digital signal processing and wave mechanics are utilized to analyze fractal and circular inclusion based phononic crystals. Topics for further study are given.

Phononic crystal band structure is found to be sensitive to inclusion boundary geometry. Fractal inclusion based crystals provide multiple pass band characteristics. The evolution of a fractal inclusion in a phononic crystal may cause band gap widening and the formation of new band gaps. Circular inclusion based phononic crystals have piecewise-linear phase characteristics and quality factors up to 600.

Abstract:
Rigorous methods for design and implementation of safety critical real-time systems are vital to avoid loss of human lives and/or severe economic losses. Unfortunately, many of these systems are designed and evaluated using ad-hoc techniques. There are, on the other hand, relatively well developed scientific theories for modeling and analysis of timing and reliability. These theories are, however, only very slowly being introduced in industrial development. Important reasons for this are the simplifying model assumptions and lack of appropriate tools for timing analysis. This thesis presents two new methods aimed to narrow the gap between scientific results and industrial practice in evaluation and design of real-time systems. The first contribution is a method that from execution time measurements on the target system can derive worst-case execution time estimates of programs. Such estimates are essential when verifying if a system fulfills its timing requirements. The second contribution is a simulation based technique that can be used to evaluate timing aspects of distributed real-time systems, as well as calculating reliability estimates of these systems. Such estimates are essential in determining if a system meets its requirements sufficiently well. Compared to proposed analytical methods for execution time analysis and schedulability analysis, the starting point for both these methods are real target systems, rather than an abstract model with limited correspondance to reality. The presented initial case-studies give clear evidence that the proposed methods have potential of being both applicable and useful.

Abstract:
This works focuses on analyzing ac/dc hybrid power systems with large number of power converters that can be used for a variety of applications. A computer model of a sample power system is developed. The system consists of various detailed/switching models that are connected together to study the sample system dynamic behavior and to set conditions for safe operation. The stability analysis of this type of power systems has been approached using time domain simulations. There are three types of stability analysis that are studied: steady-state, small-signal analysis and large signal analysis. The steady-state stability analysis is done by investigating the nominal operation of the power electronics system proposed. The small-signal stability of this system is studied by running different parametric case studies. First, the safe values of the main system parameters are defined from the view of the stability of the complete system. Then, these different critical parameters of the system are mapped together to predict their influence on the system. The large signal stability is examined through the response of the power system to different types of transient changes. There are different load steps applied to the critical parameters of the system at the maximum or minimum stability boundary limit found by the mapping section. The maximum load step after which the system can recover and remain stable is defined. The other type of large signal stability analysis done is the study of faults. There are different faults to be studied; for example, over voltage, under voltage and over current.

In power system analysis, uncertainties in the supplier side are often difficult to estimate and have a substantial impact on the result of the analysis. This thesis includes preliminary work to approach the difficulties. In the first part, a specific electricity auction mechanism based on a Japanese power market is investigated analytically from several game theoretic viewpoints. In the second part, electricity auctions are simulated using agent-based modeling.
