Abstract:
The New Beauty Council (NBC) project, in its different forms and shapes, is about the multiple perceptions of urban space and design. NBC’s work includes performances, public projects, speaker series, urban curating and collaborations that engage innovative strategies of production as well as dialogues. NBC investigates how concepts of the public are constituted and how beauty and ugliness can be (re-)defined. Using the idea of the carnivalesque as a method, NBC engages with organizations and institutions, which shape and interpret cities through public conversations and staged situations. The founding members are Annika Enqvist, Anna Kharkina, Thérèse Kristiansson and Kristoffer Svenberg. A recent project is Changed Perspectives c/o Stockholm City Museum – comprising four public talks about living in and making use of Stockholm as a city. These conversations were curated and performed by Annika Enqvist and Thérèse Kristiansson.1 The research and subjects of the series in general, and one of the talks; Whatever Blows Our Trumpet in particular, are the basis of this paper. Lounging the NBC as a collaborative initiative, building the website, producing the public talks and curating other works have been a part of the practical part of my MA project.

Symon, Bernard Dennis. "A Reductionistic Epistemology utilizing Brain Laterality which Investigates Pharmacists' Ideal Interactive Environment." University of the Western Cape, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6487.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor Pharmaceuticae - Dpharm
The brain laterality of pharmacists may influence where the pharmacists are best suited to work. Brain laterality refers to the asymmetry of the hemispheres of the brain with regard to specific cognitive functions, such as objectivity and emotion. The left hemisphere functions objectively and rationally, whereas the right hemisphere is subjective and non-rational. Animal behaviour in the literature demonstrated an influence of brain laterality, thus selecting an ideal work environment may also be driven by brain laterality bias. Further support for the research included: amblyopia; hemiplegia; the WADA test. The research question investigated the matching of the brain laterality groups of pharmacists to their ideal work environments. The aims investigated: ear, eye, hand and foot dominance in determining brain laterality; influence of brain laterality and reductionistic variables on job choice; location of emotion generation and job choice. Five objectives investigated these aims: influence of brain laterality alone; influence of brain laterality and reductionistic variables; influence of a new brain laterality determining continuum; Propinquity Principle in achieving data; correctness of the Right Hemisphere Theory (RHT) or the Valence Theory (VT). The RHT suggests that the right hemisphere is dominant in processing all emotion. The VT argues that the left hemisphere is specialised in processing the positive emotions while the right hemisphere is specialised in processing the negative emotions. The resulting Null Hypothesis posits that there is no statistical difference between the different brain laterality groups enabling pharmacists to work competently in any placement. The Alternative Hypothesis was that there is a statistical difference between the brain laterality groups, thus brain laterality can be used to best place pharmacists into ideal placements.

Abstract:
This research investigates the influences on the teaching and learning of English in the Royal Thai Air Force Academy (RTAFA). In the study, a Mixed Methods design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative research design features, was employed within a Case Study approach. Questionnaires and interviews were used as research techniques to examine and identify what constitute the influences on the teaching and learning of English in the RTAFA and the factors that affect the limitation of the English proficiency of the RTAFA graduates. The quantitative methods included a pilot questionnaire for cadets (N = 35), questionnaires for every Year level of cadets in training (N = 517) and questionnaires for the English instructors (N = 9). The Quest software program (Adams & Khoo, 1993) was applied to analyse the questionnaires and group means and standard deviations were used to calculate effect sizes between students of different Year levels. In relation to the student questionnaire, some category items were also examined and analysed separately. In relation to the qualitative analysis, semistructured interviews with a small number of the RTAFA cadets in all five years of training (N = 25), the English instructors (N = 9) and the senior administrators of the RTAFA (N = 4) were conducted to complement and triangulate the data gathered from the questionnaires. The results from the questionnaires and interviews suggest that the English curriculum influenced the teaching and learning of English in the RTAFA, followed by issues in relation to cadets' attitudes and motivations for studying English and cadets' English educational background. Factors that affected the limitation of the English proficiency of the RTAFA graduates were a lack of realization by the cadets of the importance of English, the very structure of the English curriculum and the content of the English syllabus, the perceived low status of English as evidenced by the lack of academic credits given to the subject, the poor facilities of the language laboratories, the perceived lack of current teaching methods and techniques of the instructors, the varying experiences of the cadets' background knowledge of English, the rigid military system and the need for more native speaking English instructors to develop the oral language skills of cadets. Based on the findings of all the data, suggested recommendations for improving the teaching and learning of English in the RTAFA include a revision of the English curriculum, an improvement of the content of English with an emphasis on listening, speaking and conversation skills, an update of the English language laboratories, smaller English classes and a constant professional development for instructors in relation to techniques in English teaching and learning.

Abstract:
For an organization to become successful, creating an attractive environment with an atmosphere that both encourages, as well as motivates its employees, is vital. Furthermore, when wanting the employees to reach their optimal performance, good leadership is crucial. A leader’s visions and goals should be communicated to the employees to obtain maximized results within the organization. The research focuses on the motivation within the Swedish Police Department and its existing leadership. This paper aims to analyse and investigate the main motivational tools that are used by the Police Chiefs within the Swedish Police Department for motivating their subordinates. There will also be an investigation of whether the tools used correspond to the officers’ underlying motivation factors. In this paper, three different divisions of the Swedish Police Department were investigated: Field Operations, Criminal Investigations, and Crime Preventions. The reason for using different departments in this study was primarily to better reflect the Swedish Police Department. To answer the research question, a qualitative research method was used along with a data-collection consisting of interviews with a total of twelve respondents. The results showed that the used leadership tools do not fully correspond to police officers' motivation factors.

Skoglund, Per. "Grid connected large-scale energy storage : Literature review regarding present technology and application, with a complementary case study that investigates the profitability of storage within a wind farm."

Abstract:
In the transition from traditional power plants to more environmentally friendly alternatives will generate a need for more flexibility in production, transmission and consumption. Energy storage can be provide the flexibility that are required to continue to have a robust and stable electrical system. The purpose of this report is to give an overview of the electrical energy storage technologies. The classification of energy storage technologies used in this report is mechanical, chemical and electrical. In these three categories were ten different technologies presented with function, advantages, disadvantages, degree of maturity and research area for each technology. The distribution between the globally operational energy storage technologies were presented. Also the framework and regulations for actors to own and operate an energy storage in Sweden. This review was complemented with a case study about connecting a lithium ion battery system to a wind farm. The case investigated the profitability for 20 MW wind farm with a 12 MW and 18 MWh energy storage system for a five and ten-year period. The utilization of the storage was optimized with \textit{What's best} for three different investment cost. The review were done in order to answer: what is the futures energy storage technology?, what applications can be replaced by energy storage for an electricity producer? and what will the effects be of the new actor Aggregator? The result from comparing three different prices for lithium ion batteries resulted in a non-profit scenario for all the cases in a five-year period. There were a maximum, minimum and predicted futuristic price, which generated a loss of 731, 220 and 76.6 MSEK for respective case. Only the futuristic price for a ten-year period indicated an profit. The conclusion that can be drawn from this case study is that energy storage is too expensive and the extra income from utilization of the energy storage is not enough to motivate an energy storage investment. There are not a single technology that possesses all of the required properties for the applications. In the future there will be a combination of technologies to cover all the applications. For the seasonal storage pumped hydro and compressed air are most promising technologies. The flywheels and supercapacitors can contribute with short powerful burst of energy that are needed for power quality and operating reserves. For the more wide range application such as power fleet optimization and integrate the renewable energy production, batteries in form of lithium ion battery and sodium-sulfur battery will most probably be used. For electricity producers energy storage can replace existing solutions. Instead of using diesel generators for black start services, an battery can be used. Also the power quality could be enhanced with batteries acting as filters. The process can be more utilized in a more efficient way with an energy storage. The aggregator actor gathers small variable load from e.g several houses and participate on the electricity market. This actor will level out the differences in power demand during the day. It will reduce the losses and reduce the need for grid investments in both the transmission and distribution networks. It would also generate more available frequency reserves and probably change how the market is paying for the generated benefits.

Abstract:
This study investigates the restructuring and alignment processes within the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation. The nature of the study was neither inclusive nor an exclusive study accommodate every input of the sub-directorate, and review the staff capacity to meet with set objectives of the Department. It also investigates some of the problematic areas shortsighted by the restructuring and alignment processes in the hub and areas of concerns which included: Accommodation (office space and sports fields); support of staff by senior managers; contracting and performance reviews; transport; progress review meeting of the hub system; budgeting and its implementation; equipment demand; administration tools leading severe problems; contracting of contract workers leading severe problems; and overtime and excessive workload in the hubs. It was showed in the research that problems occurred due to the inappropriate alignment of internal programmes complimented with inadequate human resources strategic planning and implementation. The problem of restructuring and alignment are due to oversight on the processes and implementation of the programmes at the foundational level, the lack of follow-ups on Service Level Agreement (SLA) with local government (still not signed), interdepartmental and intergovernmental integration strategy not in place, inadequate facilities for offices, consultation with community and stakeholders which only took place at the later stage. The respondents seriously commented regarding the organisational structure that has been changed thrice since its implementation. This led to overcrowding of staff hubs, with no career path strategy. Further causes are lack of alignment of human resource management strategy with programmes, and structural arrangement of all the departmental sub-directorates, confusing the implementation of programmes and the reporting systems. Considering the challenges of restructuring and alignment at the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the study concludes that there is a need for further restructuring and alignment of the human resource strategy to manage the objectives of the Department effectively and efficiently.

Steen, Scott. "Understanding the processes involved in implementing an improving access to psychological therapies service : an exploratory study that investigates practitioner and client experience regarding its effect on patient pathways, service design and overall outcomes." Thesis, University of Chester, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/620323.

Abstract:
The English Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme is a government-funded initiative that aims to provide timely and equitable access to evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions, within a primary care setting. Despite the many achievements of the programme, there are several issues regarding research to clinical gaps, as well as a high rate of variation between sites concerning outcomes and attrition. This thesis explores the implementation process of the IAPT delivery model to understand which factors are influential in the successful uptake and integration of evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions. The aims of this thesis are:  To explore, identify and analyse the implementation process involved in establishing and delivering an IAPT service.  To uncover the factors that either facilitate or impede its development to provide a more in-depth and detailed account of the implementation and operation of services.  To develop an understanding regarding the applicability of evidence-based practice and the IAPT delivery model in a clinical setting, for the provision of psychological therapies. I conducted a series of semi-structured interviews with practitioners delivering and implementing services, across seven sites, and clients, across three sites. The design and analysis followed an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, focusing on personal meaning and sense-making processes. The objective of the interview was to understand the implementation process regarding the IAPT delivery model, exploring how this influences personal experiences and client engagement. Additionally, participant narrative was set in context using open-access data collected and published by the programme. The analysis generated three master themes for practitioners delivering and implementing services including: ‘A Call to Action’ describing how participants regarded this process as a genuine opportunity to make a real impact in mental healthcare; ‘Contextual Influences on Service Operation’ which explores the activities in becoming a locally determined, adaptable and relevant service; and a ‘Focus on Relationships’ outlining the relational and collaborative work involved during implementation. For the client group, three master themes were generated including: ‘A Personal Journey: From Discovery to Advocacy’ illustrating the changing experiences involved during service access and engagement; ‘Perception of Self’ which portrays how individuals made sense of their engagement by judging what it meant to them; 5 and ‘Outside Factors’ which explores the role of others and the physical journey made in getting to services. The analysis suggested that both groups made sense of their experiences in complex and varied ways. Heavily influencing the implementation of the IAPT delivery model is the over-arching need to boost throughput and quantity, possibly at a cost of quality. Additionally, it is argued that the use of routine outcome monitoring in services is useful for reflecting on the implementation process and engaging clients. The key to successful implementation appears to be about achieving integration, requiring a whole-systems based approach that considers the mediating pathways into and out of services. In light of the findings and literature, the thesis proposes several recommendations for future practice and further research.

Gwak, Changdae. "Ecclesiology and membership trends in the South Korean churches." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/15047.

Abstract:
Thesis (DTh)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the reasons for the recent membership decline in the South Korean Churches (SKCs) as well as the existing problems facing the Churches. It investigates the pathological pattern in the Churches and its fundamental roots. The study proposes an alternative solution that could remedy the problems and promote healthy growth within the Churches. Two issues are taken into consideration: 1) In general, the SKCs' explanations of the recent membership decline are inadequate. The reasons for the decline cannot be found by simply examining statistics. The problems are at a much deeper level and the decline requires a comprehensive examination. 2) The Churches' remedial actions are also inadequate: they are both short-sighted and, in practical terms, ineffective, as well as theologically unfaithful. A new direction for healthy growth should be proposed. This study focuses on the assumption that the reasons for the recent decline in membership of the SKCs are closely related to the distortion of the Churches' dominant ecclesiology, which has produced various ecclesial pathologies and has resulted in the Churches' loss of credibility in society. This study thus pays attention to the ecclesiology of the Churches. Chapters II and III analyse the dominant ecclesiology of the SKCs within their historical and contextual background. The analysis shows that problems relate to the SKCs' uncritical accommodation of the American churches' dominant ecclesiological models. This implies that the SKCs urgently need the construction of a contextual ecclesiology. This study hypothesises that a practical theological methodology can construct a relevant contextual ecclesiology. Hence, the central thesis of the study is: the development and application of a sound practical theological methodology will lead to the development of a biblical and contextual ecclesiology ('practical theological ecclesiology') which will explain the growth and decline in the SKCs and indicate a new direction for healthy growth. Chapter IV presents a theoretical basis for this study: it discusses a practical theological ecclesiology by means of a four-phased practical theological methodology. This consists of descriptive, explanatory, normative, and strategic phases. Subsequent chapters address the four phases and analyse the growth of the SKCs: emphasis is placed on the fact that the dominant ecclesiology of the SKCs has encouraged the Churches to accommodate contemporary culture and dominant ideologies, whether secular or religious, without proper critical, theological reflection. This accommodation has undermined healthy growth and resulted in a numerical decline. Finally, this study recommends 'a trinitarian praxial ecclesiology' as a new direction for the SKCs. This will play a critical, constructive role in promoting the healthy growth of the Churches.

Sorenson, Joshua Russell. "The use of large plot rainfall simulation to investigate." Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/3045.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, large scale rainfall simulation was used to evaluate runoff generation from canopy and intercanopy areas within an ashe juniper woodland of the Edwards Plateau. One 3 x 12 m site was established beneath the canopy of mature ashe juniper trees and two sites were established in intercanopy areas. At the base of each plot a trench was constructed for capturing and monitoring shallow subsurface flow. Rainfall simulations on the juniper site produced little surface runoff even though rainfall intensity exceeded 145mm/hour on some occasions. A total of 82.6% of the water applied to the juniper dominated site was accounted for as shallow subsurface flow. The dynamic nature of shallow subsurface flow indicate this process is driven chiefly by macropore flow. On the intercanopy site, 12.67% of the water left the site as surface runoff and ≤3% left as shallow subsurface flow. Large root channels and conduits, which were not present on the intercanopy site, within the soil may promote shallow subsurface flow beneath the juniper canopy. This study is the first to document and suggest shallow subsurface flow occurs on Texas rangelands. The results of this experiment indicate shallow subsurface flow is an important mode of runoff generation on the Edwards Plateau.

Abstract:
This thesis investigated the use of novel combinations of multimodal metaphors in the presentation of learning information to evaluate the effect of these combinations on the usability of e-learning interfaces and on the users' learning performance. The empirical research described in this thesis comprised three experimental phases. In the first phase, an initial experiment was carried out with 30 users to explore and compare the usability and learning performance of facially animated expressive avatars with earcons and speech, and text with graphics metaphors. The second experimental phase involved an experiment conducted with 48 users to investigate their perception of avatar's facial expressions and body gestures when presented in both the absence and presence of interactive e-learning context. In addition, the experiment aimed at evaluating the role that an avatar could play as virtual lecturer in e-learning interfaces by comparing the usability and learning performance of three different modes of interaction: speaking facially expressive virtual lecturer, speaking facially expressive full-body animated virtual lecturer, and two speaking facially expressive virtual lecturers. In the third phase, a total of 24 users experimentally examined a novel approach for the use of earcons and auditory icons in e-learning interfaces to support an animated facially expressive avatar with body gestures during the presentation of the learning material. The obtained results demonstrated the usefulness of the tested metaphors to enhance e-learning usability and to enable users to attain better learning performance. These results provided a set of empirically derived innovative guidelines for the design and use of these metaphors to generate more usable e-learning interfaces. For example, when designing avatars as animated virtual lecturers in e-learning interfaces, specific facial expression and body gestures should be incorporated due to its positive influence in enhancing learners' attitude towards the learning process.

Mbhele, Moruti Herbert. "Absent father in marriage : a pastoral challenge." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/66358.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focused on the search of the impact of absent father on the lives of young adults in the household. In the interview with the coparticipants, the research revealed that the problems of absent father prevailed and continued to traumatize young adults despite the execution of pastoral care of laying hands and uttering of prayers on young adults by pastors and deacons of the church since these are the pastoral practices and care the church offers to assist in halting the problems. The absence of pragmatic of pastoral method caused dismay more especially on young adults because they perceived a church as a family of God which is endowed with power to provide healing and comfort abundantly in their lives as well as changing the mind-set of their fathers who deserted them. Prior to this research the inability to deal and solve the problems of absent father caused the congregation to encounter dilemma because some members of the congregation emphasized that these young adults who their problems of absent father seem not to be solved by prayer and laying of hands must be referred to psychologist while others suggested that such young adults must be excommunicated because they disturb the smooth running of the worshipping in the church. These views prompted the current research. It was, therefore, the aim of this study to journey with the coparticipants in order to understand and have knowledge of the situation they are encountering so that the research will employ the appropriate pastoral care and practice to assist them to get rid of the problems of absent father,

Full text
Abstract:
Medicolegal death investigators (MDIs) are a crucial part of the death investigation process but the profession remains unregulated and lacks a required accreditation or licensing process that many other professions use. Research shows the current medicolegal death investigations system, though a crucial government function, has existing deficits in its functionality that affect service delivery. The current study was based on an educational theory and utilized open ended survey questions. Data from 16 investigators was collected through surveys where relevant information was asked in the context of their situation and questions were specific to the phenomenon being studied. The data was analyzed by identifying individual and group descriptions of the experience to understand the overall meaning of their experience. The investigators interviewed had different experiences and varying beliefs in the importance of their role as an investigator. They were confident in their roles and provided detailed descriptions of their responsibilities. Additionally, investigators do not appear to have any direct issues due to educational differences but did embrace their roles as death investigators with a desire toward ensuring both their personal safety and that of society. Although many have acquired training as a result of their employment, they did not feel that the lack of prior training was a hindrance. This study contributes to the literature by providing data for consideration when developing regulations promoting standards within the system. This includes the health and safety of medicolegal death investigators and filling the gap of recognizing the need for standardized regulations by identifying the need for uniform training and safety practices.

Abstract : In forensic analysis, techniques of acquisition device identification are used for checking whether an image under investigation has been acquired by a particular suspect device (digital camera, for example). For trying to solve this problem, a characteristic of image acquisition device that has been widely explored is the photo-response nonuniformity (PRNU). The PRNU is a pattern noise originating from the imperfections of the manufacturing process, which characterizes each photo sensor. Currently, the success rate (correct identification of the image source) of techniques based on PRNU, using low-resolution images, tends to be limited. Such a limitation is due to the fact that low-resolution images have few samples (pixels) to estimate the PRNU, unlike high-resolution images. This paper proposes a new approach based on PRNU to perform image acquisition device identification. This approach is based on the decomposition of the image into sub-images, aiming to reduce the image interpolation effect in the PRNU estimation process. Moreover, this approach uses all image channels, without distinguishing among them, to estimate the PRNU. Thereby, improved results are obtained for identifying the source for both high-resolution and low-resolution images, as illustrated in experiments carried out by using images from digital cameras and cellphone digital cameras.

The object of this paper is the investigative power of the Public Prosecution Service and its limits in administrative probity tutelage. The thesis examines the performance of that institution in tort investigations related to collective interests, in accordance with its granted attribution by 1988 Constitution and statutes. The limits of the investigative powers of Public Prosecution Service raises several questions in the Brazilian legal system, comprising the eventual conflict between the public interest in tort finding offensive to administrative probity, and the preservation of fundamental rights of the citizens subjects to investigation. The thesis seeks to determine the scope and limits of the investigative function of Public Prosecution Service in administrative probity tutelage. These issues are examined using the deductive method, starting from the identification of a general theory concerning the Rule of Law and fundamental rights, after describing and analyzing the constitutional and legal functions of Public Prosecution Service, as to its civil attribution in collective tutelage, especially in the civil investigation. Following, this general theory has been trying to be applied to solve the specific problems raised by the proposed theme, examining the investigative performance of the Institution as regards the right to privacy and the principles of mandatory action, publicity, efficiency and supremacy of public interest in their reciprocal interactions. The thesis states that the public servants have a reduced sphere of privacy. The thesis shows that the existence of minimum requirements regarding the possibility of Public Prosecution Service investigative power leads to the application of the principle of mandatory action. The thesis also identifies the normative status of the constitutional principle of publicity, which excludes the possibility of confidentiality in ministerial investigations to protection of privacy rights of those investigated, in view of public nature of the functions they perform; moreover, the thesis examines the possibility of temporary secrecy of those investigations based on the convenience of their instruction or to protect the society interests. Finally, the thesis analyzes the constitutional and legal restriction of confidentiality imposed on certain matters, particularly in bank secrecy, as the conditions for accessing and using of the confidential matters in Public Prosecution Service investigation.

Abstract:
This thesis uses the war crimes investigations carried out by the Wehrmacht between 1939-1945 to explore the creation and development of the narrative which the Nazi regime constructed to justify its war of aggression, conquest, and extermination. This source has been sorely underused and provides deep insight into the regime's official narrative - a narrative which seems fundamentally at odds with its true aims and its murderous actions. It claimed that the Reich was waging a war in self-defence and for humanitarian reasons. These justifications were designed to convince both the German population and international audiences. The regime did not simply lie, however, but gathered empirical evidence which it then used selectively to legitimise the war. By reconstructing this process, the thesis aims to understand the degree to which the regime was able to make its arguments convincing. This allows us to better understand how it was possible to mobilise so many ordinary Germans to support and fight the war and, indeed, to perpetrate horrendous crimes. In particular, this thesis seeks to explore the tension between the official narrative and the Reich's own crimes, arguing that these two were not diametrically opposed, but that there was a direct justificatory link between them. Crucial in this context was the degree to which the regime could portray its criminal actions as a response to those of the enemy. In doing so, this thesis develops on a historiography which has acknowledged the importance of the regime's justificatory framework, but which has yet to study the foundations on which this was based and how it developed over the course of the war. In short, this is a study of the German narrative of victimhood which underpinned the brutal war of extermination.

Abstract:
The main aim of this thesis is to investigate multilingual mobile learning applications by using the wireless response system (WRS) as a case study. This application is developed and internationalised into fourteen languages, to allow students and teachers from different languages to use this application, with a view towards enhancing the educational environment. Additionally, one related aim is to detect the usability of the multilingual mobile learning application in these languages, by measuring the effectiveness, efficiency, user satisfaction and comprehensibility of the WRS, through the adoption of the Fuzzy theory. Drawing on a survey of 295 participants, the results indicate significant differences between the original language of the interface (i.e., English) and certain other language interfaces, in terms of its effectiveness, efficiency, user satisfaction and comprehensibility. These variances make the usability level of the WRS in the English language interface significantly better and statistically different from the Netherlands, Dutch, French, Italian, Swedish, Russian, Romanian, Spanish and Turkish languages. However, the results show that the usability level of the WRS interface in the English language is not significantly better and statistically different from the Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, Malay and Polish languages. These results encourage future studies to further improve the mobile learning application in languages that demonstrated low usability values. These results will help researchers in this field to recognise the problems and weaknesses of multilingual mobile learning applications, towards improving and solving them. The significance of this thesis lies in making the WRS application available in fourteen languages, and also in measuring the usability of these fourteen languages through the application of (1) Fuzzy theory and (2) SPSS software. The use of the Fuzzy theory to measure the collected data leads to obtaining accurate and precise results, facing the vagueness and ambiguities of the user‟s language surrounding the analysis process. In other words, this theory adds a clearer and more accurate understanding of the vagueness of language‟s uncertainty, opinion and ambiguous expressions that are hidden in different users‟ backgrounds.

Collaboration rewarded – directly inspired by Italian and American law – also known as procedural collaboration or whistleblower reward, aims to contribute to the acquisition of investigative and evidentiary elements since investigation by traditional methods is blocked. The problem of strengthening methods of proof presents a possible conflict of interest in criminal justice’s efficiency with rights of freedom and maintenance of procedural dynamics’ vigor, leading us to reflection on the theme from criteria given theory of principles and proportionality. Therefore, it values the latent constitutional tension on this theme. Moreover, the greatest difficulty in positive law is that Brazilian legislation does not set procedural rules to whistleblower award, which makes it difficult mainly regarding what procedure to be taken, how to manage pentiti, and probative valuation of co-defendants’ statements that collaborate with Justice. Hence, it is addressed how collaboration rewarded can be legitimately used by courts, preserving both its purpose and the fundamental guarantees of those involved.

Abstract: Since Biology is a constantly changing field of science, teaching materials often cannot follow these updates. A way to overcome this obstacle is ally them to the news content, stemmed from multimediatic materials that can, for example, be scientific texts. For content to be worked critically, in order to achieve scientific literacy, various approaches can be used, both in science education as those present in media education. Therefore, this interdisciplinary character leads to some questions: how to work more than one approach / education perspective; how far the teacher can apply the proposal in the classroom; and finally, what are the difficulties he faces and how to overcome them. The overall objective of the research was to study if the teacher is able to combine and work with nvestigative teaching approaches and media education, from previous explanations (meetings) in order to relate the daily life of the student with the subject studied by a controversial topic by a media material. Thus, the research took a qualitative research character (ALVES-MAZZOTTI, 1991; BOGDAN And BIKLEN, 1994; CARVALHO, 2004), in which the data were analyzed from the perspective categorical content analysis (FERREIRA and LOGUERCIO, 2014). The inquiry teaching and media literacy approaches, aiming at a scientific literacy, can be worked together, since they have common characteristics and even complementary. We conclude from the analyzed aspects that the teacher's view of the media material, a... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract:
This project presents a platform that integrates Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), image retrieval systems, Geographical Information Systems (GISes), digital maps and Computer Vision techniques to collect and analyse urban images. The platform, INACITY (an acronym for INvestigate and Analyse a City), empowers users allowing them to select a region over a map and see urban features inside that region that have relevance to the urban architecture context, for instance trees. The implementation is extensible and it is designed to make it easy to add or replace new modules, for instance, to add a new API to present a map, different GISes and other Computer Vision filters.

Abstract:

This thesis presents a series of experiments conducted by the author between 2016 and 2018 that were designed to test for and investigate a proposed phonon-nuclear coupling interaction and an associated nuclear excitation transfer mechanism. Electric and magnetic interactions of phonons with atomic nuclei have been studied for several decades. However, such second-order interactions are too weak to induce nuclear state changes. Hagelstein and Chaudhary recently identified the possibility of a stronger, first-order phonon-nuclear interaction, based on the boost correction associated with the nucleon-nucleon potential for nuclei embedded in a condensed matter environment. Because the newly proposed interaction follows from the relativistic (Dirac) treatment of nucleons, Hagelstein and Chaudhary refer to this interaction as relativistic phonon-nuclear coupling.
Relativistic phonon-nuclear coupling implies the possibility of phonon-mediated nuclear excitation transfer where in the process of absorbing and emitting phonons, energy can transfer from excited state nuclei to nearby ground state nuclei, analogous to widely studied excitation transfer at the atomic and molecular level. To test for and investigate these theoretical conjectures, we prepared samples with a combination of ground state and excited state Fe-57 nuclei (from beta-decaying Co-57) attached to a steel substrate. Samples then underwent treatment by inducing vibrations via ultrasound or mechanical stress. Simultaneously, time histories of radioactive emission were recorded at different locations. Early experiments with vibrations induced at the MHz level via ultrasound transducers yielded negative results and no variations in radioactive emission were observed. However, in conjunction with mechanical stress, deviations from expected emission were observed.
After applying mechanical stress to a sample, we observed a 19% enhancement above expected levels of 14.4 keV gamma emission from Fe-57 and a 17% enhancement above expected levels of Fe K-alpha emission (which to a large extent is driven by internal conversion from the 14.4 keV nuclear transition). The enhancements decayed away with a time constant of about 2.5 days. At the same time, emission on the Sn K-alpha line (driven by fluorescence of Sn in the steel) was consistent with the expected exponential decay of Co-57 at the 1% level, suggesting detector integrity. Similar deviations from expected emission were observed by two additional detectors in different locations. Further experimentation exhibited a high level of reproducibility of the observed effects. By now, evidence for the effects have been seen in seven different detectors and in six different experimental configurations. In some experiments, reductions instead of enhancements can be observed.
Moreover, we observe differences in the ratio of 14.4 keV gamma and Fe K-alpha emissions across experiments. To explain reported observations, we propose that the temporary enhancements and reductions of emission originate from phonon-mediated nuclear excitation transfer and are caused by resulting delocalization and angular anisotropy effects. Delocalization can result from excitation transferring into the steel substrate and across the Co-57/Fe-57 residue. Angular anisotropy can follow from phase coherence at neighboring sites as a result of resonant excitation transfer. Furthermore, observed differences in the incremental emission of 14.4 keV gamma and Fe K-alpha emission suggests that a new channel for internal conversion is opened in off-resonant states present in excitation transfer. We motivate and discuss the conjectured mechanisms as well as alternative candidate explanations and conclude that the latter do not suffice to account for the reported observations.
Finally, we present limitations of this work to date and point at avenues for further research and clarification. Relativistic phonon-nuclear coupling and nuclear excitation transfer have the potential to form new tools in the toolbox of nuclear engineers. The further pursuit of research in this area could lead to the use of phonons in a wide range of applications: for mixing nuclear states; for generating angular anisotropy or inducing beam formation; and potentially for exciting or de-exciting atomic nuclei in applications otherwise reliant on photons. This, in turn, could lead to many nuclear engineering applications becoming more economical as well as less hazardous.

Moral disengagement (DM) is a psychosocial process that deactivates the internal moral standard of inhuman conduct, silencing self-condemnation. Thus, three studies were conducted to analyze DM by perspectives different. Specifically, the objectives were: to analyze the current state of the art of researches on DM (Study 1); to obtain a translated and adapted version for Brazil of the main measure of DM, the Multifaceted Scale of Mechanisms of Moral Disengagement - MSMMD, seeking evidence of validity and reliability estimates (Study 2); and to investigate the relationships between DM and demographic and educational variables (Study 3). Study 1 revealed that this phenomenon has been related to a fairly large number of transgressive behaviors that vary in severity, that DM manifests itself in several contexts and in different phases of the life course, that predominate correlational studies and that are scarce the studies on DM in Brazil, as well as that there is a lack of measures with evidence of validity and reliability for this context. Study 2 denoted that the Brazilian version of MSMMD appears to be multidimensional, with the theoretical model - four sets of mechanisms that group eight mechanisms and give rise to a total - the most adequate internal structure for the measure. The scale presents good internal consistency for the total of items, however, most of the factors and components presented Cronbach's Alphas lower than expected. Evidence of validity for MSMMD was also found based on the relationship with other variables, more precisely empathy, prossocial behavior and infractional acts. Although not exempt from limitations, the Brazilian version of MSMMD can be considered a useful resource for Brazilian research on DM. In addition, it is recommended that further studies on MSMMD psychometric properties be performed. Study 3 identified that boys, students with lower age and with less number of years studied, students of public institutions with a history of school failure showed higher DM. Religion was not associated with DM in general, but the Moral Justification and Euphemistic Language mechanisms were less used by participants who have and are practicing religion. Moral Justification was the mechanism most used by students and Advantageous Comparison less used. Despite the limitations, the three researches that compose this dissertation open, albeit modestly, ways for future researches on DM in the Brazilian context.

Proof-theoretic Semantics provides a new approach to the semantics of logical constants. It has compelling philosophical motivations which are rooted deeply in the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mathematics. We investigate this new approach of logical semantics and its perspective on logical validity in the light of its own philosophical aspirations, especially as represented by the work of Dummett (1991). Among our findings, we single out the validity of Peirce’s rule with respect to a justification procedure based on the introduction rules for the propositional logical constants. This is an undesirable outcome since Peirce’s rule is not considered to be constructively acceptable. On the other hand, we also establish the invalidity of the same inference rule with respect to a justification procedure based on the elimination rules for the propositional logical constants. We comment on the implications of this scenario to Dummett’s philosophical programme and to proof-theoretic semantics in general.

Abstract:
The present study consists of a reflexive follow-up of the art production I have developed lately. Its object of study corresponds to one of the steps of my work process as an artist, between the years of 2002 and 2005. This dissertation approaches issues understood as unfoldings of procedures and experiments carried out during my work of art process. Photography is the predominant language in my artistic production, and it acts both as a means and as a subject in the body of my work. In the works carried out in this period, issues related to the look that builds landscapes intermmediated by photographical devices were observed. Photography seems to act in the artistical process as a device that investigates itself and also as a kind of looking device which investigates and/or produces landscapes.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the practices, perceptions, and operations of agricultural crime units. To date, there has been little research conducted on policing agricultural crimes and no known research on units specializing in investigating them. The study utilizes data gathered from qualitative interviews with agricultural crime investigators across several states to fill this gap in the literature. The results allow for an examination of the fundamental practices of agricultural units, their perceptions and their experiences. In addition, they point to several implications for both policy and practice that may serve to guide our efforts to combat the problem.

Abstract:
Living biological cells are highly complex, multifunctional systems whose physical attributes are relatively unknown. Critical functions involving plasticity of cell morphology, connectivity and response to stimuli are proposed to be fundamentally related to the micromechanical character and the ability of the cell to exert directed mechanical signaling. Unique abilities of atomic force microscopy in measuring cellular viscoelastic properties (on length scales from nanometers to microns) are explored with specific applications to (1) airway smooth muscle cells and (2) hippocampal neurons. Surface indentation techniques for stiffness mapping, as well as quantitative measurements of frequency-dependent complex rheology are featured. Structural and molecular determinants of dynamic mechanical behavior are identified. In smooth muscle cells, an isotropic fiber network provides strong resistance to deformation. Actin polymerization is largely responsible for stiffening following contractile activation, not myosin cross-bridge formation as expected. On neuronal dendrites, stiffness contrast correlates with known distributions and stability of cytoskeletal elements: microtubules along the shafts and dynamic actin in the spines (micron-sized surface protrusions). Focus is given to dendritic spines as the post-synaptic contact sites for most excitatory transmission between neurons. Large heterogeneity is observed in spine mechanical properties, but stiffer spines appear to be associated with axon-like contacts. Spines may stiffen in response to synaptic stimulation, in agreement with recent observations of actin-based stabilization of spine shape (reduced motility) following excitatory treatments.
Remarkably, the frequency dependence of the complex shear moduli (0.5-100 Hz indentations) of both cellular systems is described well by the same rheological model: that of soft glassy materials existing just above the glass transition. The central feature of this model is that storage ( G') and loss moduli (G") scale in parallel as a weak power-law function of frequency. Power-law exponents (alpha), measured to be of the order 0.1, are related to the level of molecular agitations in the cell and determine the degree of solid-like (G' >> G" with a glass transition at alpha = 0) or fluid-like behavior (G' << G" with alpha = 1 for a pure fluid). The soft glassy hypothesis is founded on the concepts of disorder and metastability of structural elements. A Newtonian viscosity (pure fluid) component is also identified with significant effects for high frequency deformations. Together these properties are critical for describing cellular remodeling: contraction in smooth muscle cells or synaptic plasticity at dendritic spines.

Abstract:
A complete understanding of protein synthesis requires description of the cyclical motions and interactions that occur in ribosomal RNA and transfer RNA during translation. The purpose of the following research was to gain understanding of the nature of these motions and interactions, and to develop new tools to measure how ligands alter the conformational flexibility of RNA during the steps of initiation, elongation and termination. Different tRNA substrates were bound to the E. coli 70S to simulate the arrangement of the tRNA-ribosomal complex before and after peptide bond formation, and different UV-induced 16S rRNA-tRNA photocrosslinks were produced in these complexes, illustrating that the 16S rRNA P-site undergoes local deformations during elongation. A statistical study was undertaken to understand the nature of conformational states in the 30S ribosomal subunit. Using the lists of observed UVB/C- and UVA-s4U-induced crosslinks and the T. thermophilus 30S X-ray crystal structure, frequencies were compared to a number of geometrical parameters demonstrating that crosslink formation requires substantial RNA motions. In addition, the results show that the restricted pattern of crosslink formation in E. coli 16S rRNA is due to the overall rigidity of the 30S subunit outside of the active site. One consequence of these conclusions is that potocrosslinking rates depend on the ease of inter-nucleotide conformational movements. This was exploited in a study that used the temperature response of the rate constant for the UVA-induced photo-crosslink between s4U8 X C13 in E. coli tRNA to determine tRNA geometry and internal energy. The rate constants followed Arrhenius behavior in their dependence on temperature, and this allowed calculation of the activation energy associated with the conformational rearrangement necessary to bring the photoreactive bonds together. The experiments show that changes in the tRNA on ribosomes can be uncovered by photocrosslinking, that RNA mobility occurs by transient conformational changes, and describe a new technique than can quantitatively measure the internal energy associated with these conformational movements.

Burokas, Aurelijus 1982. "New behavioural models to investigate eating disorders." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/126535.

Full text
Abstract:
The rapid increase of obesity has encouraged the study of the aetiology of eating disorders. Besides genetic, social and metabolic factors, obesity is caused by over-eating and has high rate of relapse to abnormal food-taking habits, which is mainly provoked by food-associated cues. High-palatable food intake shares similarities with the consumption of addictive drugs since it engages brain reward systems and produces comparable behavioural adaptations. However, the mechanism of the transition from normal food consumption to pathological over-eating remains obscure. Animal models are crucial to study the underlying mechanisms and are also excellent tools to facilitate the research of new pharmacological targets and to evaluate the benefit/risk ratio of potential novel treatments. We have focussed our research in the study of novel potential targets for eating disorders using new animal models developed in our laboratory. Firstly, we investigated the effects of the chronic blockade of the endocannabinoid system as anti-obesity treatment in a novel model of diet-induced obese rats and the role of the endocannabinoid system on cognitive processes and metabolism in mice using new behavioural devices. Secondly, we validated new sophisticated behavioural models of relapse and frustration in mice to investigate these key elements in the development of overeating.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a study of hedging errors caused by model mis-specification, making use of a Kolmogorov forward equation with d-function initial conditions. The method is used to calculate the probability distribution of hedging errors at maturity for a number of realistic examples. An analysis of numerical schemes used to solve the Kolmogorov forward equation is presented, making particular use of Fourier transform techniques. Much of the analysis applies to a 'toy' model which captures the main features of the hedging problem. Detailed analysis of a semi-discrete Fourier numerical method for solving the toy model problem leads to a complete description of the accuracy and stability behaviour of the scheme. The thesis also includes a novel time-change method which solves the heat equation with d-function initial conditions, using the Crank-Nicolson method, and which demonstrates improved convergence of the scheme. The numerical analysis included in the thesis explores further aspects of Fourier transform methods applied to the analysis of Partial Differential Equations with Dirac data and variable coefficients.

Abstract:
There are multiple mechanisms by which DNA can become damaged. Such damage must be repaired for the cell to avoid ill-health consequences. Homologous recombination (HR) is a means of repairing one specific type of damage, a double-strand break (DSB). This complex pathway includes the Rad51-DNA nucleoprotein filament as its primary machinery. Current methodology for studying HR proteins includes the use of fluorescently labeled DNA to probe for HR dynamics. This technique limits the number of proteins that can be involved in experimentation, and often only works as an end reporter. The work here aims at improving upon standard techniques by creating two fluorescent protein probes. The first probe was developed by directly attaching a fluorophore to Saccharomyces cerevisiae Rad51 with the use of click chemistry and the incorporation of unnatural amino acids. This probe could function as a primary reporter on the formation and dissociation of the Rad51-DNA filament in the presence of pro- and anti- HR mediator proteins. The second probe was created by labeling the exterior cysteine residues of Plasmodium falciparum single strand DNA binding protein (SSB) with a fluorophore via maleimide chemistry. This probe acts as a secondary reporter for HR dynamics by signaling for when free single stranded DNA (ssDNA) is available.

Abstract:
Abstract. This thesis presents a signal analysis tool, which has been designed to investigate walking abnormalities which are related to foot rolling movements during walking; interaction of foot with ground which is called stance phase. They would cause a wide range of severe anatomical damages such as ankle, leg, heel and back pain in the long-term. Comparing to the conventional data acquisition setups of biomechanical researches, inertial measurement sensors (IMU), which are being used widely as an appropriate alternative setup recently, facilitate monitoring human movement for a long-term period out of laboratory. This justifies the growing trend of improving the IMU-based algorithms which are designed for events detection, position calculation, and rotation estimation. Therefore, a set of 4 IMUs, placed on shank and foot of both legs, has been used for data collection. In data processing stage, two novel algorithms have been developed and implemented as the backbone of the designed software aiming to detect and integrate stance phases. The first algorithm was developed to detect stance phases in gait cycle data. Even though the detection of events in gait cycles has been the topic of a majority of biomechanical researches, stance phase as the interval between two consecutive events has not been studied sufficiently. The second algorithm, sensor alignment, generates a rotation matrix which is used to align IMU sensors placed on the same foot and shank. This alignment of the two sensors enables us to add or subtract the data point-wisely to make a more meaningful interpretation of the data regarding thought-out walking abnormalities during phase stances. The visualized results of the thesis can be considered as an early stage of a more comprehensive research which might lead to quantitative results corresponding to different walking abnormalities.

Investigative powers of Congress is the Congress to obtain the required information, the tool found the truth. Due to the need for legislative decision-making rational, and rational legislative decision-making need to use the logic of scientific method, to take an objective view of the decision for seeking truth from facts, there is no investigative powers, Congress is that the lack of information, difficult to discover the truth of a disadvantage, unable to make the right decisions , will not be able to carry out its terms of reference on the role of function. Compared to democracy in the world''s major countries of the development of the investigative power of Congress, the Legislative Yuan may exercise certain power of investigation in 2004 until the beginning by the J.Y. Interpretation No.585 to explain the right of access to the survey. Representative democracies, the United Kingdom is one of the first use of the investigative power of Congress, the United States Department of the investigative power of Congress to develop the most complete system, also the most frequent use of the country, a democratic country by the major development of the investigative power of Congress, know that the investigative power of Congress to essential for Congress to support legislative power, Congress is also an important weapon supervision. However, the exercise of legislative power on behalf of the people in our country of the Legislative Yuan in the future can indeed play with investigative powers to supervise the executive, legislative and other auxiliary functions, there is the establishment of a sound depends on the right of Congress to investigate the mode of operation. In this study, data collection through literature, the light of our constitutional system with a foreign legal system, and finally developed the following recommendations: 1.The Legislative Yuan investigative power system should be the rule of law, and clearly defined the scope of the exercise of investigative powers, to avoid violation of other constitutional organs of the terms of reference. 2. The introduction of a small number of right( Minderheitsenquete) - in order to learn from the German system. 3. In addition to the exercise of law in the Legislative Yuan to develop terms of reference "of the exercise of investigative powers," a chapter, the new legislation is still to be a peremptory norm of "public hearing", "testimony" of the relevant provisions. 4. Addition of "contempt of Congress" of norms. 5. Be added to a breach of confidentiality provided for the punishment. 6. The Legislative Yuan investigative powers should be fine with more force. 7. In construction contracting, both the owner and the contractor are protected under the contract law. Due to disparity of economic standing and perception of risks, the owner often has more to lose than the contractor does, should the contractual relationship be unexpectedly terminated. Many a contractual mechanism is so purposely designed to protect the owner, including various bonds, allocation of risks and insurance, award deductions, liquidation damages, and procedural restrictions for progress and payment. Contractor pre-qualification is also a powerful means adopted to protect owner’s project success. After the commencement of construction, the owner protection mechanisms, which take the form of contract provisions, are enforceable only when the conditions hold true at any given timeframe. Unfortunately, this may not be the case in general. Both external conditions, including those relevant to the contractor, and internal conditions, in particular those related to construction progress, will vary. Therefore, it is imperative to examine the effectiveness of such mechanisms routinely and make necessary contractual adjustments if conditions turn against the owner. This work investigates the scope and content of owner protection mechanism in construction. Both literature review and expert interviews were conducted to establish the basis of analysis. A set of factors is identified as critical to owner protection. Eigenvector Method is employed upon these factor, with experts’ opinion, to generate relative weights among them. Fuzzy Sets Theory is introduced to formulate an analytic model for evaluating the overall protection gained by the owner. Recommendations are given to how this simple model can be incorporated into the procedure of contract management.

The Biomechanical Investigates of Soccer Volley Shot Performed at Three Kinds of Ball Heights Advisor: Tzu-Lin Wong Graduate student: Yu-Hung Chiu ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to examine soccer full-volley shots and side-volley shot performed at three kinds of ball heights. Twelve junior amateur, right leg dominant, male soccer players (height=175.08±6.42 cm; weight=64.42±8.16 kg; age=16.92±0.64 yrs) participated in this study. Two high-speed video cameras (JVC DVL-9800) were used to sample the kicking motion at 120 Hz. For calibrating the performance area, a calibration frame with 15 control points was videotaped before the trails. A digitizing system (Kwon 3D) synchronized with an ATMI force plateform(2400 Hz) were used to collect the full-volley shots and side-volley shot performed at three kinds of ball heights. By the three-dimensional cinematographic technical analysis, the kicking leg was modeled as a three-link kinetic chain composed of thigh, shank, and foot, from which liner velocity, angular velocity and angular momentum were computed. The difference between the biomechanical parameters with full-volley shots and side-volley shot performed at three kinds of ball heights were analyzed using repeat measure one-way ANOVA. The level of significance was set at 0.05. The results as follows: 1. The ball velocity and foot velocity of full-volley shots and side-volley shots performed on lower ball height had high value than that performed on higher ball-height(p<.05). 2. At the period of back-swing, the full-volley shots performed on higher ball height which expended less time than lower ball height(p<.05), At the period of back-swing, the side-volley shots show not significance with three kinds of ball heights(p>.05). At the period of leg-cocking, the full-volley shots performed on higher ball height which expended more time than lower ball height(p<.05), At the period of leg-cocking, the side-volley shots show not significance with three kinds of ball heights(p>.05). 3. As kicking the ball-height was elevated, there was a increased trend of foot angular momentum and angular velocity before ball impact by used the full-volley soccer shots and side-volley soccer shots(p<.05). But there was a decreased trend the frontal of foot angular momentum and angular velocity before ball impact by used the soccer full-volley shots and side-volley shots(p<.05). 4. Soccer full-volley shots and side-volley shots performed at three kinds of ball heights did not influence the peak ground reaction force and liner impulse before impact(p>.05). It was also not related to the ball velocity. The results were concluded as follows: In the present study, the volley shots performed on higher ball height which had lower ball velocity than performed on lower ball height, and did not influence the sum of swing time. As kicking the ball heights were elevated, soccer full-volley shots and side-volley shots had less frontal foot angular momentum and angular velocity which won’t benefited the ball velocity. The employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) has implemented for a long time in Taiwan, it also causes many controversial issues. During the past five years, as the option market has been established, the employee stock option (ESO) becomes one of the major compensation systems in Taiwan. According to previous literatures, ESO is benefitial for the performance of the corporations. Nevertheless, there has not been adequate evidence to demonstrate the ESO is helpful for Taiwanese to corporations. This study investigates the relationship among employee stock ownership, employee stock option, corporate performance. This work empirically examines the effects of stock ownership and stock option announcements for companies listed in the TSE. Panel data is used and the sample period is from January 2001 to December 2004. The empirical results are summarized as follows: The ESOP significantly affect the firm’s performance. But it is not effective. The ESO does not significantly affect the firm’s performance. Since ESO has just been started four years ago and is not popular at this moment, ESO does not significantly affect corporate performance.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on the assumption that there are significant relationships between my art making process and my art teaching practice. While I am able to implicitly incorporate my feelings and intuition as subjective experiences within my holistic sense of my "self", I am using the systematic and disciplined process of reflective inquiry to make the relationships explicit--that is, to document them, describe them, and make them consciously available for communication and analysis by me and by readers of the thesis. Through self-reflection, I explore how my inner, private meanings are manifested in my outer, public practices as an artist and as a teacher, and see how they can be a resource for other art educators. In presenting my research I adopted David Kolb's model of experiential learning as a frame that I applied to my experiences as an artist and as a teacher. Through description of my art-making practices and reflective introspection, I integrated practical and theoretical orientations within myself as an artist. In the art classroom, I adopted participant observation and action research strategies for my research. The data from the studio was in the form of a journal/diary, along with the actual art products. I have included photographs to show to the reader some of the images I produced. My data from the classroom was in the form of audio tapes, a video tape, log/reflection/diary, and photographs of student's art-work. I then used methods of qualitative research to analyse the data and to discern the relationships that emerged from both collections of data. For me teaching is a life-long process of learning, just as in the creative process there must be a constant evolution. In order for the art-educator to evolve, he/she has to practice creative activity. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Since the development of internet applications matured, social network is a new social mode that is easier for searching the cyber community, and it is forward to create an innovative source for advertising and marketing to the business. Mostly, researches in Taiwan in relation to the behavior or marketing on online community tools are focus on either advertising or marketing, without a whole picture. Thus, this study investigates the on-line community tools as a research subject, and explores the users’ online and purchase behavior in the cyber community. In addition, this study implements the SPSS Clementine as a data mining approach, to categorize four kinds of online users’ behavior by using a two-step method. Finally, this article suggests that online users those who join communities of commerce and their purchase behavior are critical knowledge for considering possible business models and proposals. By doing so, in terms of profit model, knowledge extraction from subjects of four clusters might be a contribution to this research issue.
