Abstract:
The New Beauty Council (NBC) project, in its different forms and shapes, is about the multiple perceptions of urban space and design. NBC’s work includes performances, public projects, speaker series, urban curating and collaborations that engage innovative strategies of production as well as dialogues. NBC investigates how concepts of the public are constituted and how beauty and ugliness can be (re-)defined. Using the idea of the carnivalesque as a method, NBC engages with organizations and institutions, which shape and interpret cities through public conversations and staged situations. The founding members are Annika Enqvist, Anna Kharkina, Thérèse Kristiansson and Kristoffer Svenberg. A recent project is Changed Perspectives c/o Stockholm City Museum – comprising four public talks about living in and making use of Stockholm as a city. These conversations were curated and performed by Annika Enqvist and Thérèse Kristiansson.1 The research and subjects of the series in general, and one of the talks; Whatever Blows Our Trumpet in particular, are the basis of this paper. Lounging the NBC as a collaborative initiative, building the website, producing the public talks and curating other works have been a part of the practical part of my MA project.

Symon, Bernard Dennis. "A Reductionistic Epistemology utilizing Brain Laterality which Investigates Pharmacists' Ideal Interactive Environment." University of the Western Cape, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6487.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor Pharmaceuticae - Dpharm
The brain laterality of pharmacists may influence where the pharmacists are best suited to work. Brain laterality refers to the asymmetry of the hemispheres of the brain with regard to specific cognitive functions, such as objectivity and emotion. The left hemisphere functions objectively and rationally, whereas the right hemisphere is subjective and non-rational. Animal behaviour in the literature demonstrated an influence of brain laterality, thus selecting an ideal work environment may also be driven by brain laterality bias. Further support for the research included: amblyopia; hemiplegia; the WADA test. The research question investigated the matching of the brain laterality groups of pharmacists to their ideal work environments. The aims investigated: ear, eye, hand and foot dominance in determining brain laterality; influence of brain laterality and reductionistic variables on job choice; location of emotion generation and job choice. Five objectives investigated these aims: influence of brain laterality alone; influence of brain laterality and reductionistic variables; influence of a new brain laterality determining continuum; Propinquity Principle in achieving data; correctness of the Right Hemisphere Theory (RHT) or the Valence Theory (VT). The RHT suggests that the right hemisphere is dominant in processing all emotion. The VT argues that the left hemisphere is specialised in processing the positive emotions while the right hemisphere is specialised in processing the negative emotions. The resulting Null Hypothesis posits that there is no statistical difference between the different brain laterality groups enabling pharmacists to work competently in any placement. The Alternative Hypothesis was that there is a statistical difference between the brain laterality groups, thus brain laterality can be used to best place pharmacists into ideal placements.

Abstract:
This research investigates the influences on the teaching and learning of English in the Royal Thai Air Force Academy (RTAFA). In the study, a Mixed Methods design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative research design features, was employed within a Case Study approach. Questionnaires and interviews were used as research techniques to examine and identify what constitute the influences on the teaching and learning of English in the RTAFA and the factors that affect the limitation of the English proficiency of the RTAFA graduates. The quantitative methods included a pilot questionnaire for cadets (N = 35), questionnaires for every Year level of cadets in training (N = 517) and questionnaires for the English instructors (N = 9). The Quest software program (Adams & Khoo, 1993) was applied to analyse the questionnaires and group means and standard deviations were used to calculate effect sizes between students of different Year levels. In relation to the student questionnaire, some category items were also examined and analysed separately. In relation to the qualitative analysis, semistructured interviews with a small number of the RTAFA cadets in all five years of training (N = 25), the English instructors (N = 9) and the senior administrators of the RTAFA (N = 4) were conducted to complement and triangulate the data gathered from the questionnaires. The results from the questionnaires and interviews suggest that the English curriculum influenced the teaching and learning of English in the RTAFA, followed by issues in relation to cadets' attitudes and motivations for studying English and cadets' English educational background. Factors that affected the limitation of the English proficiency of the RTAFA graduates were a lack of realization by the cadets of the importance of English, the very structure of the English curriculum and the content of the English syllabus, the perceived low status of English as evidenced by the lack of academic credits given to the subject, the poor facilities of the language laboratories, the perceived lack of current teaching methods and techniques of the instructors, the varying experiences of the cadets' background knowledge of English, the rigid military system and the need for more native speaking English instructors to develop the oral language skills of cadets. Based on the findings of all the data, suggested recommendations for improving the teaching and learning of English in the RTAFA include a revision of the English curriculum, an improvement of the content of English with an emphasis on listening, speaking and conversation skills, an update of the English language laboratories, smaller English classes and a constant professional development for instructors in relation to techniques in English teaching and learning.

Abstract:
For an organization to become successful, creating an attractive environment with an atmosphere that both encourages, as well as motivates its employees, is vital. Furthermore, when wanting the employees to reach their optimal performance, good leadership is crucial. A leader’s visions and goals should be communicated to the employees to obtain maximized results within the organization. The research focuses on the motivation within the Swedish Police Department and its existing leadership. This paper aims to analyse and investigate the main motivational tools that are used by the Police Chiefs within the Swedish Police Department for motivating their subordinates. There will also be an investigation of whether the tools used correspond to the officers’ underlying motivation factors. In this paper, three different divisions of the Swedish Police Department were investigated: Field Operations, Criminal Investigations, and Crime Preventions. The reason for using different departments in this study was primarily to better reflect the Swedish Police Department. To answer the research question, a qualitative research method was used along with a data-collection consisting of interviews with a total of twelve respondents. The results showed that the used leadership tools do not fully correspond to police officers' motivation factors.

Skoglund, Per. "Grid connected large-scale energy storage : Literature review regarding present technology and application, with a complementary case study that investigates the profitability of storage within a wind farm." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för tillämpad fysik och elektronik, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-135758.

Abstract:
In the transition from traditional power plants to more environmentally friendly alternatives will generate a need for more flexibility in production, transmission and consumption. Energy storage can be provide the flexibility that are required to continue to have a robust and stable electrical system. The purpose of this report is to give an overview of the electrical energy storage technologies. The classification of energy storage technologies used in this report is mechanical, chemical and electrical. In these three categories were ten different technologies presented with function, advantages, disadvantages, degree of maturity and research area for each technology. The distribution between the globally operational energy storage technologies were presented. Also the framework and regulations for actors to own and operate an energy storage in Sweden. This review was complemented with a case study about connecting a lithium ion battery system to a wind farm. The case investigated the profitability for 20 MW wind farm with a 12 MW and 18 MWh energy storage system for a five and ten-year period. The utilization of the storage was optimized with \textit{What's best} for three different investment cost. The review were done in order to answer: what is the futures energy storage technology?, what applications can be replaced by energy storage for an electricity producer? and what will the effects be of the new actor Aggregator? The result from comparing three different prices for lithium ion batteries resulted in a non-profit scenario for all the cases in a five-year period. There were a maximum, minimum and predicted futuristic price, which generated a loss of 731, 220 and 76.6 MSEK for respective case. Only the futuristic price for a ten-year period indicated an profit. The conclusion that can be drawn from this case study is that energy storage is too expensive and the extra income from utilization of the energy storage is not enough to motivate an energy storage investment. There are not a single technology that possesses all of the required properties for the applications. In the future there will be a combination of technologies to cover all the applications. For the seasonal storage pumped hydro and compressed air are most promising technologies. The flywheels and supercapacitors can contribute with short powerful burst of energy that are needed for power quality and operating reserves. For the more wide range application such as power fleet optimization and integrate the renewable energy production, batteries in form of lithium ion battery and sodium-sulfur battery will most probably be used. For electricity producers energy storage can replace existing solutions. Instead of using diesel generators for black start services, an battery can be used. Also the power quality could be enhanced with batteries acting as filters. The process can be more utilized in a more efficient way with an energy storage. The aggregator actor gathers small variable load from e.g several houses and participate on the electricity market. This actor will level out the differences in power demand during the day. It will reduce the losses and reduce the need for grid investments in both the transmission and distribution networks. It would also generate more available frequency reserves and probably change how the market is paying for the generated benefits.

Abstract:
This study investigates the restructuring and alignment processes within the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation. The nature of the study was neither inclusive nor an exclusive study accommodate every input of the sub-directorate, and review the staff capacity to meet with set objectives of the Department. It also investigates some of the problematic areas shortsighted by the restructuring and alignment processes in the hub and areas of concerns which included: Accommodation (office space and sports fields); support of staff by senior managers; contracting and performance reviews; transport; progress review meeting of the hub system; budgeting and its implementation; equipment demand; administration tools leading severe problems; contracting of contract workers leading severe problems; and overtime and excessive workload in the hubs. It was showed in the research that problems occurred due to the inappropriate alignment of internal programmes complimented with inadequate human resources strategic planning and implementation. The problem of restructuring and alignment are due to oversight on the processes and implementation of the programmes at the foundational level, the lack of follow-ups on Service Level Agreement (SLA) with local government (still not signed), interdepartmental and intergovernmental integration strategy not in place, inadequate facilities for offices, consultation with community and stakeholders which only took place at the later stage. The respondents seriously commented regarding the organisational structure that has been changed thrice since its implementation. This led to overcrowding of staff hubs, with no career path strategy. Further causes are lack of alignment of human resource management strategy with programmes, and structural arrangement of all the departmental sub-directorates, confusing the implementation of programmes and the reporting systems. Considering the challenges of restructuring and alignment at the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the study concludes that there is a need for further restructuring and alignment of the human resource strategy to manage the objectives of the Department effectively and efficiently.

Steen, Scott. "Understanding the processes involved in implementing an improving access to psychological therapies service : an exploratory study that investigates practitioner and client experience regarding its effect on patient pathways, service design and overall outcomes." Thesis, University of Chester, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/620323.

Full text
Abstract:
The English Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme is a government-funded initiative that aims to provide timely and equitable access to evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions, within a primary care setting. Despite the many achievements of the programme, there are several issues regarding research to clinical gaps, as well as a high rate of variation between sites concerning outcomes and attrition. This thesis explores the implementation process of the IAPT delivery model to understand which factors are influential in the successful uptake and integration of evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions. The aims of this thesis are:  To explore, identify and analyse the implementation process involved in establishing and delivering an IAPT service.  To uncover the factors that either facilitate or impede its development to provide a more in-depth and detailed account of the implementation and operation of services.  To develop an understanding regarding the applicability of evidence-based practice and the IAPT delivery model in a clinical setting, for the provision of psychological therapies. I conducted a series of semi-structured interviews with practitioners delivering and implementing services, across seven sites, and clients, across three sites. The design and analysis followed an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, focusing on personal meaning and sense-making processes. The objective of the interview was to understand the implementation process regarding the IAPT delivery model, exploring how this influences personal experiences and client engagement. Additionally, participant narrative was set in context using open-access data collected and published by the programme. The analysis generated three master themes for practitioners delivering and implementing services including: ‘A Call to Action’ describing how participants regarded this process as a genuine opportunity to make a real impact in mental healthcare; ‘Contextual Influences on Service Operation’ which explores the activities in becoming a locally determined, adaptable and relevant service; and a ‘Focus on Relationships’ outlining the relational and collaborative work involved during implementation. For the client group, three master themes were generated including: ‘A Personal Journey: From Discovery to Advocacy’ illustrating the changing experiences involved during service access and engagement; ‘Perception of Self’ which portrays how individuals made sense of their engagement by judging what it meant to them; 5 and ‘Outside Factors’ which explores the role of others and the physical journey made in getting to services. The analysis suggested that both groups made sense of their experiences in complex and varied ways. Heavily influencing the implementation of the IAPT delivery model is the over-arching need to boost throughput and quantity, possibly at a cost of quality. Additionally, it is argued that the use of routine outcome monitoring in services is useful for reflecting on the implementation process and engaging clients. The key to successful implementation appears to be about achieving integration, requiring a whole-systems based approach that considers the mediating pathways into and out of services. In light of the findings and literature, the thesis proposes several recommendations for future practice and further research.

Gwak, Changdae. "Ecclesiology and membership trends in the South Korean churches." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/15047.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DTh)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the reasons for the recent membership decline in the South Korean Churches (SKCs) as well as the existing problems facing the Churches. It investigates the pathological pattern in the Churches and its fundamental roots. The study proposes an alternative solution that could remedy the problems and promote healthy growth within the Churches. Two issues are taken into consideration: 1) In general, the SKCs' explanations of the recent membership decline are inadequate. The reasons for the decline cannot be found by simply examining statistics. The problems are at a much deeper level and the decline requires a comprehensive examination. 2) The Churches' remedial actions are also inadequate: they are both short-sighted and, in practical terms, ineffective, as well as theologically unfaithful. A new direction for healthy growth should be proposed. This study focuses on the assumption that the reasons for the recent decline in membership of the SKCs are closely related to the distortion of the Churches' dominant ecclesiology, which has produced various ecclesial pathologies and has resulted in the Churches' loss of credibility in society. This study thus pays attention to the ecclesiology of the Churches. Chapters II and III analyse the dominant ecclesiology of the SKCs within their historical and contextual background. The analysis shows that problems relate to the SKCs' uncritical accommodation of the American churches' dominant ecclesiological models. This implies that the SKCs urgently need the construction of a contextual ecclesiology. This study hypothesises that a practical theological methodology can construct a relevant contextual ecclesiology. Hence, the central thesis of the study is: the development and application of a sound practical theological methodology will lead to the development of a biblical and contextual ecclesiology ('practical theological ecclesiology') which will explain the growth and decline in the SKCs and indicate a new direction for healthy growth. Chapter IV presents a theoretical basis for this study: it discusses a practical theological ecclesiology by means of a four-phased practical theological methodology. This consists of descriptive, explanatory, normative, and strategic phases. Subsequent chapters address the four phases and analyse the growth of the SKCs: emphasis is placed on the fact that the dominant ecclesiology of the SKCs has encouraged the Churches to accommodate contemporary culture and dominant ideologies, whether secular or religious, without proper critical, theological reflection. This accommodation has undermined healthy growth and resulted in a numerical decline. Finally, this study recommends 'a trinitarian praxial ecclesiology' as a new direction for the SKCs. This will play a critical, constructive role in promoting the healthy growth of the Churches.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, large scale rainfall simulation was used to evaluate runoff generation from canopy and intercanopy areas within an ashe juniper woodland of the Edwards Plateau. One 3 x 12 m site was established beneath the canopy of mature ashe juniper trees and two sites were established in intercanopy areas. At the base of each plot a trench was constructed for capturing and monitoring shallow subsurface flow. Rainfall simulations on the juniper site produced little surface runoff even though rainfall intensity exceeded 145mm/hour on some occasions. A total of 82.6% of the water applied to the juniper dominated site was accounted for as shallow subsurface flow. The dynamic nature of shallow subsurface flow indicate this process is driven chiefly by macropore flow. On the intercanopy site, 12.67% of the water left the site as surface runoff and ≤3% left as shallow subsurface flow. Large root channels and conduits, which were not present on the intercanopy site, within the soil may promote shallow subsurface flow beneath the juniper canopy. This study is the first to document and suggest shallow subsurface flow occurs on Texas rangelands. The results of this experiment indicate shallow subsurface flow is an important mode of runoff generation on the Edwards Plateau.

AbstractThe structural properties of cast aluminum parts are strongly affected by the solidification in the production process. The solidification dynamics determines the Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS), directly affecting the structural strength of the alloy. Simulation techniques enable the integrated design of chassis parts and their production equipment. However, in order to effectively predict the SDAS formation, the simulation models need to be investigated and calibrated. The present research investigates the SDAS formation models and identifies a robust relation to be used in Design by Simulation phases for AlSi7Mg0.3 parts.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper investigates detecting patterns in the pressure signal of a compressed air system (CAS) with a load/unload control using a wavelet transform. The pressure signal of a CAS carries useful information about operational events. These events form patterns that can be used as ‘signatures’ for event detection. Such patterns are not always apparent in the time domain and hence the signal was transformed to the time-frequency domain. Three different CAS operating modes were considered: idle, tool activation and faulty. The wavelet transforms of the CAS pressure signal reveal unique features to identify events within each mode. Future work will investigate creating machine learning tools for that utilize these features for fault detection in CAS.

Abstract:
AbstractTo meet the demands for flexible assembly technology, an aerodynamic feeding system has been developed. The system autonomously finds the optimal configuration of four parameters – two angles of inclination, nozzle pressure and component speed – using a genetic algorithm, which has been presented in earlier work. To increase the flexibility of the feeding system, an actuator was implemented, that enables the variation of the nozzle position orthogonally to the moving direction of the components. This paper investigates the effects of the more flexible flow against the components on their behavior when passing the nozzle. Additionally, the nozzle position was implemented into the genetic algorithm as a fifth parameter. Therefore, the impact of the enlargement of the solution space of the genetic algorithm due to the implementation of a fifth parameter is investigated in this paper as well.

Carlson, Lisa, and Karen Guzzo. Median Age at Last Birth. National Center for Family and Marriage Research, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.25035/ncfmr/fp-21-05.

Abstract:
Trends and differentials in the age at first birth are well-documented (FP-20-06). Given shifts and variation in completed family size (FP-20-04), it is also important to look at the age of last birth – that is, when do women stop having children – which has received very little attention. This profile investigates the median age at last birth among women at the end of their childbearing years, at 45-49 years old. Using the 2015-2019 cycles of the National Survey of Growth, this profile investigates the median age at last birth for mothers aged 45-49 by race/ethnicity, completed education, parity, and age at first birth.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the co-movement of sovereign lending from multilateral development banks (MDBs) and private creditors with government expenditure. The paper finds that multilateral sovereign lending follows government expenditure and that this correlation does not change if governments are running a surplus or a deficit. This finding raises doubts on the feasibility of MDBs to be counter-cyclical, unless the governments themselves implement counter-cyclical fiscal policies.

Abstract:
The rule of Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus has created one of the most resilient authoritarian regimes in post-communist Europe. Meanwhile, the turmoil triggered by the 2020 presidential election has put in the spotlight the mounting challenges facing Lukashenko’s authoritarian rule. This paper investigates the state of human rights and political freedoms in Belarus, focusing on the main rationale behind the turmoil surrounding the 2020 presidential election. It concludes that the political crisis following the elections is the unsurprising consequence of Lukashenko’s diminishing ability to maintain power or concentrate political control by preserving elite unity, controlling elections, and/or using force against opponents.
