Abstract:
The elimination of distribution inefficiencies, occurring due to the timing of customers' orders is an important reason for companies to introduce vendor managed inventory programs. By managing their customers' inventories, suppliers may be able to reduce demand variability and therefore distribution costs. We develop technology to measure the effectiveness of distribution strategies. We develop a methodology that allows the computation of tight lower bounds on the total mileage required to satisfy customer demand over a period of time. As a result, companies will be able to gain insight into the effectiveness of their distribution strategy. This technology can also be used to suggest desirable delivery patterns and to analyze tactical and strategic decisions. Secondly, we study the inventory routing problem with continuous moves (IRP-CM). The typical inventory routing problem deals with the repeated distribution of a single product, from a single facility, with an unlimited supply, to a set of customers that can all be reached with out-and-back trips. Unfortunately, this is not always the reality. We introduce the IRP-CM to study two important real-life complexities: limited product availabilities at facilities and customers that cannot be served using out-and-back tours. We need to design delivery tours spanning several days, covering huge geographic areas, and involving product pickups at different facilities. We develop a heuristic and an optimization algorithm to construct distribution plans. The heuristic is an innovative randomized greedy algorithm, which includes linear programming based postprocessing technology. To solve the IRP-CM to optimality, we give a time-discretized integer programming model and develop a branch-and-cut algorithm. As instances of time-discretized models tend to be large we discuss several possibilities for reducing the problem size. We introduce a set of valid inequalities, called delivery cover inequalities, in order to tighten the bounds given by the LP relaxation of the time-discretized model. We also introduce branching schemes exploiting the underlying structure of the IRP-CM. An extensive computational study demonstrates the effectiveness of the optimization algorithm. Finally, we present an integrated approach using heuristics and optimization algorithms providing effective and efficient technology for solving inventory problems with continuous moves.

Abstract:
In this master thesis study, new inventory control mechanisms are developed for the repairables in Nedtrain. There is a multi-item, multi echelon system with a continuous review and one for one replenishment policy and there are different demand supply options in each control mechanism. There is an aggregate mean waiting time constraint in each local warehouse and the objective is to minimize the total system cost. The base stock levels in each warehouse are determined with an approximation method. Then different demand supply options are compared with each other.

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis is about a stochastic inventory theory and how changes in different parameters affect the cost system. The inventory is based on a stochastic version of an economic quantity order (EOQ) model with planned shortages. For the deterministic EOQ-model with planned shortages there is a convenient formula for optimal order quantity $Q$ minimizing the cost per time unit. For the stochastic version an ($R$,$Q$)-policy is applied where $R$ is a reorder point such that if the inventory level is below $R$ and order is sent and the ordered products arrive after a lead time $L$. Since a formula for the stochastic inventory is not known, optimal choice of $Q$ is numerically obtained by simulations and compared with the optimal $Q$ for the deterministic EOQ with planned shortages. The demand is for simplicity described by a Poisson process. Since having a stochastic inventory model the basic mathematical EOQ formula is inadequate and is replaced with an approximate EOQ formula with planned shortages. By the simulations the accuracy of the EOQ model with planned shortages approximation is investigated and optimal values for some of the  parameters are obtained.

Abstract:
This study is concerned with the inventory routing problem with deterministic, dynamic demand and order-up-to level inventory policy. The problem mainly arises in the supply chain management context. It incorporates simultaneous decision making on inventory management and vehicle routing with the purpose of gaining advantage from coordinated decisions. An integrated mathematical model that represents the features of the problem is presented. Due to the magnitude of the model, lagrangean relaxation solution procedures that identify upper bounds and lower bounds for the problem are developed. Satisfactory computational results are obtained with the solution procedures suggested on the test instances taken from the literature.

Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions (QWBS) provides communication equipment and services used to track trucking fleets and other capital assets via satellite. Order fulfillment and inventory management practices in QWBS were non-uniform and manually intensive. Buyers used their own intuition and rules-of-thumb to decide how many parts to order and how many parts should be held in stock to buffer against unexpected demand fluctuations. Non-uniform, manual inventory management practices resulted in higher inventory levels, lower customer service, and higher operational costs than can be achieved with uniform, formal management practices. This thesis describes the design and implementation of an automated inventory management system that optimizes inventory levels and alleviates manual effort. Benchmarking was used to show how a similar firm used inventory management techniques to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Quantitative analysis was used to develop an inventory management simulator that allowed alternative management strategies to be tested before implementing changes to the real system. Simulation results showed that QWBS inventories for fiscal year 2001 (FY01) could have been reduced by 40% had an automated inventory management policy been in place. In addition, automation would have reduced the manual effort of buyers by about 32%. Results from the simulator motivated the formation of the Automated Inventory Manager (AIM) project team. AIM is designed to automate order fulfillment and inventory management tasks and allow procurement's human resources to be redirected from low level transaction processing tasks to more value-added tasks. AIM is expected to liberate $700K in working capital and save approximately $240K per year in ongoing inventory and labor cost reductions, representing a 1-year ROI of 200%. However, AIM represents only the first step in a recommended cost reduction program to streamline the fulfillment of customer orders and reduce organizational redundancies.

Abstract:
Despite using computerized merchandise control systems in retail, the rate of stockouts has remained stagnant. The inability to satisfy customer needs has caused a loss of 4% in potential revenue and resulted in dissatisfied customers. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore cost-effective inventory control strategies used by discount retail managers. The conceptual framework that grounded the study was chaos theory, which helped identify why some business leaders rely on forecasting techniques or other cost-effective strategies as an attempt to prevent stockouts. The target population was comprised of discount retail managers located throughout northeast Jacksonville, Florida. Purposeful sampling led to selecting 6 retail managers who successfully demonstrated cost-effective inventory control strategies for mitigating stockouts. Data were collected through face-to-face semistructured interviews, company websites, and company documents. Analysis included using nodes to identify similar words and axial-coding to categorize the nodes into themes. Transcript evaluation, member checking, and methodological triangulation strengthened the credibility of the findings. Five themes emerged: (a) internal stockout reduction strategies, (b) external stockout reduction strategies, (c) replenishment system strategies, (d) inventory optimization strategies, and (e) best practices for inventory control. This study may contribute to positive social change by improving inventory management, which may reduce demand fluctuations in the supply chain and reduce logistics costs in the transportation of freight thereby leading to improved customer satisfaction.

Abstract:
Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) is a business practice in which vendors monitor their customers&rsquo
inventories, and decide when and how much inventory should be replenished. VMI has attracted a lot of attention due to its benefits. In this study, we analyze the benefits of VMI in a supply chain consisting of a single retailer and a single capacitated supplier under stochastic demand. We propose a VMI setting and compare the vendor managed system with the traditional system to quantify the benefits of VMI. In our proposed VMI system, the retailer shares the inventory level information with the supplier, which is not available in traditional system
and the supplier is responsible to keep the retailer&rsquo
s inventory level between the specified minimum and maximum values, called (z,Z) levels, set by a contract. We examine the benefits of such a VMI system for each member and for the overall chain
and analyze the effects of system parameters on these benefits. The performance of VMI in coordinating the overall chain is examined under different system parameters.

Abstract:
Within manufacturing industries, capital is tied up in machines, tools and inventory of unprocessed raw materials as well as finished goods and everything in between, also known as work in progress. Naturally, firms strive to minimize the capital employed in these items and thus facilitate a leaner operation. At the same time, it is important to maintain a stable and uninterrupted production. A prerequisite for maintaining a stable production is that the inputs of the production processes are available at all times. Machining tools need to always be available and easily accessible in order to minimize machine downtime in between batch orders, and if a machine breaks down, the necessary spare parts must be provided quickly. This study has been performed in order to investigate when it would be beneficial for a manufacturer of heavy vehicles to achieve a consumption-driven system for ordering machining tools. More specifically, it looks into the prerequisites and the potential benefits of such a system. This research has been done by conducting a case study at Scania Transmission Machining in Södertälje, Sweden, which is the department responsible for manufacturing conical gears and gear transmission components for Scania’s European production. The case study included a diagnosis of the current inventory control situation, which served the purpose of identifying weaknesses in the system and potential areas of improvement. Furthermore, simulations were conducted based on historical transaction data from the storage unit which supplies tools for the case company. This was done in order to investigate how a consumption-driven inventory control system may be set up in practice and to provide figures on potential monetary gains as well as other benefits. The findings from this study indicate that there are many incentives for Scania Transmission Machining to adopt and implement an inventory control system for machining tools which is based on the consumption. First off, the diagnosis of the current inventory control system revealed several weaknesses and inefficiencies in the system. Furthermore, simulating the inventory levels for a sample of tools showed improvements in terms of the number of days of shortage and in a lower average inventory level. Finally, the monetary savings have been estimated to amount to roughly 1 million SEK per year.

Abstract:
To become a successful company today all costs, must be kept to a minimum. To make sure they are companies need to try new methods and policies to get closer to an optimum production. One of the things that need attention is the inventory of spare parts and the replacement of the same. The companies want their machines to have as many active hours as possible and therefore they need to replace components in them from time to time. This study will compare the current policy with a new one to see if it is economically justifiable to minimize the inventory of spare parts. This will be done by replacing two identical components in the same machine before they fail and production stops. We call it the proactive block replacement policy. To test this new policy a simulation based on historical data was made where the costs associated with the different replacements such as cost of component, cost o lost production and cost of the two types of replacements. All these costs were considered to see is the company could save money through this change. The result showed that the new policy was not suitable for this specific component because the cost of the component and the variation of lifetime on it was too high. Because of the big variation of lifetime, the time of the replacement had to be set after fewer hours of production which means more components will be used and the cost per active hour will be higher. This study is limited because only one specific component at a specific machine was studied and it is not possible to make any assumptions for other components from this study. This had to be done to get the most precise information from the company to get the best result. The conclusion of this study is that the company should keep their current replacement theory and not change into the new one. Though there might be possible ways of lowering the costs by only having one component in inventory instead of two.

Abstract:
In this study, hazardous waste inventory for Turkey is developed based on wastes identified as hazardous in European Waste Catalogue and Regulation on Control of Hazardous Wastes, Annex 7 Necessity of such inventory arises from importance of acquiring information on the amount of hazardous wastes generated and on their countrywide distribution for a sound hazardous waste management system for Turkey. Hazardous waste inventory is constructed by using waste generation factors obtained from literature which are coefficients that relate production with environmental emissions. Whenever possible, direct information obtained from generators was utilized. Both absolute and minor entries are covered. It is estimated that 4,940,000 &ndash
5,110,000 t/yr of hazardous wastes are being generated in Turkey. 1,790,000 &ndash
2,252,000 t/yr of these are classified as absolute entries and 3,146,000 &ndash
3,160,000 t/yr of hazardous wastes are minor entries. It is observed that highest generation occurs from mining and thermal processes which involve high amounts of minor entries. Beside these industries highest generation occurs from wood preservation. Per capita hazardous waste generation is estimated as 30 &ndash
77 kg/capita/yr which is in accordance with per capita generation range of EU. Highest hazardous waste generation occurs from Marmara Region with 527,730 t/yr followed by Aegean (524,580 t/yr), Central Anatolia (481,820 t/yr), Black Sea Region (277,850 t/yr), Mediterranean (211,580 t/yr), Southeast Anatolia (58,290 t/yr) and Eastern Anatolia (36,520 t/yr) excluding minor entries from mining industry and thermal processes. The trends in hazardous waste generation and GDP from manufacturing industry show the same trend. Contribution of regions are in the same order both in hazardous waste generation and GDP.

Abstract:
The General Accounting Office (GAO) has stated that the Department of Defense (DoD) believes it is better to overbuy inventory items than to manage with just the right amount of stock. This thesis asserts that Navy inventory managers do not have a general tendency to overbuy items, but rather make rational purchasing decisions influenced and motivated by the environment of rewards and penalties in which they work. It is also asserted that Navy inventory managers are risk adverse due to the nature of their environment. Personal stockout costs are examined as one of the key factors influencing decision-making and risk adverse behavior. This thesis introduces a conceptual model that describes the Navy inventory management decision-making environment. This model shows the relationship between personal stockout costs, required service levels, cost considerations, and planning horizons across the different decision-making levels in the Navy. This study concludes that readiness-based performance measures must be changed to incorporate a cost focus, and that the risk facing inventory managers due to personal stockout costs needs to be reduced to change their behavior of lower inventory levels are desired

The development of inventory studies for Small Hydropower Plants is a costly and time consuming activity. The motivation of this dissertation is to, quickly and economically, verify the true viability of these projects. A computational model was created to automate inventory studies, identifying the hydroelectric generation potential and the projects’ installation sites. After the identification of the potential, the definition of project siting and project sizing is studied. In other words, the model determines the most adequate sites to build dams among several candidate locations and, for each selected case, the plant design (gross head, installed capacity, reservoir size and others). This potential is developed through the maximization of total net benefit, and includes environmental constraints that can be adapted to different regulations. Through this automation, the risks for entrepreneurs investing a significant amount of money in unpromising river basins are expected to reduce.

This thesis documents a study carried out at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) in Cambridge, MA. The study focused on the development of inventory management processes for laboratory consumables. The pharmaceutical R&D process is characterized by a dynamic project portfolio, which results in a great diversity of stock-keeping-units, low repeat order rates and high variability in consumption rates. These factors create significant challenges for the design of inventory management processes. We first present an assessment and diagnosis of the current state of inventory management at NIBR, using data gathered from various NIBR sites as well as other companies. We discuss underlying drivers that influence current behavior, and identify opportunities for improvement. We then develop alternative models for inventory management and compare these models along several dimensions such as stock room location & control, inventory ownership and replenishment options. We recommend the use of consolidated department level stock rooms as the most suitable option for NIBR. Detailed implementation plans are then developed and validated through a case study. We present key findings and recommendations for implementation, and discuss opportunities for future projects.

The production of aerospace grade titanium alloys is concentrated in a relatively small number of producers. The market for these materials has always been cyclical in nature. During periods of high demand, metal producers claim to operate near full capacity utilization. During periods of reduced demand, metal producers struggle to remain profitable. Additionally, the manufacturing processes for aerospace grade titanium alloys are capital intensive and require long lead-times in order to bring new capacity online. The combination of these factors often results in an inflexible titanium alloy raw material supply chain for Pratt & Whitney. At the same time, Pratt & Whitney experiences a variety of rare but disruptive events within the supply chain that affect their raw material requirements. Examples of these disruptive events include customer drop-in orders, manufacturing complications resulting in scrapped material, and planning deficiencies. In order to protect engine and spare part customers from delayed deliveries due to long lead-time raw materials, Pratt & Whitney holds a strategic inventory of various titanium alloy raw material.
(cont.) This thesis presents a mathematical model utilizing a Compound Poisson Process that can be used to optimize the amount of strategic titanium alloy raw material held by Pratt & Whitney. The associated mathematical algorithms were programmed into Microsoft Excel creating the Strategic Raw Material Inventory Calculator. Historical data was then collected and used with this unique tool to calculate service levels at current inventory levels as well as optimized inventory levels under various scenarios.

In modern global supply chains, goods travel stochastically from suppliers to their final destinations through several intermediate installations such as ports and distribution facilities. In such an environment, the supply chain must be agile to respond quickly to demand spikes. One way to achieve this objective is by expediting outstanding orders from the intermediate installations through premium delivery. In this research, we study the optimal expediting and regular ordering policies of a serial supply chain with a radio frequency identification deployment at each installation. Radio frequency identification technology allows capturing the state of the system, i.e., the time and location of goods, at any point in time, and thus enables to expedite outstanding orders directly to the destination, which faces stochastic demand. We identify systems, called sequential, that yield simple and tractable optimal policies. For sequential systems, outstanding orders including expediting do not cross in time. For such systems, we find that the optimal policies of expediting and regular ordering are the base stock type policies. The directional sensitivity of the base stock levels with respect to expediting costs is also obtained. We provide an important managerial insight on the radio frequency identification technology: we need to actively use the additional information from the radio frequency identification technology through new business processes such as expediting to unveil more benefits from the supply chain. On the other hand, orders may cross in time for systems that are not sequential, thus in such a case optimal policies are hard to obtain. We propose a heuristic for such systems and discuss its performance and limitation.
(cont.) Lastly, as an extension to the model, we study the optimal policies of expediting and regular ordering when there is an expiry date on outstanding orders. The optimal expediting policy identifies a number of base stock levels depending on the age of the orders, but the structure of the optimal policy remains simple for sequential systems.

It is critically important for inventory-carrying facilities to provide high availability of products at the minimal operating cost. To achieve this objective, many companies have automated their inventory operations and rely on the information system in critical decision makings. However, if the information is inaccurate, it may lead to high out-of-stocks and/or excess inventory. This thesis examines what the primary causes of the inaccuracy are, how and to what extent they degrade the inventory system performance, and what can be done to compensate for the inaccuracy. Analytical and simulation modelling demonstrate that the inventory system performance is highly sensitive to the inaccuracy caused by stock loss, which is the disappearance of items (such as due to theft) not detected by the information system. That is, even a small level of stock loss accumulated over time can lead to inventory inaccuracy that disrupts the replenishment process and creates severe out-of-stocks. In fact, revenue losses due to out-of-stocks can far outweigh the property losses due to the disappearing items.
(cont.) One way to deal with the inaccuracy problem is the use of RFID-based automatic product identification technology under development at the Auto-ID Center, which can provide the real-time and accurate information regarding the location and quantity of objects in supply chain. It is found that even when this technology provides imperfect measurement of the stock quantity, dramatic performance improvement can be achieved using an inventory control scheme based on dynamic programming. Various other methods of compensating for the inventory inaccuracy are presented and evaluated. Analysis of each method reveals that the inventory inaccuracy problem can be effectively treated even without automatic identification technology in some situations. However, each method has weaknesses.

The management of raw material at Blue Brick in Singapore is costly as the company is forced to pay for external storage when the ports' time allowance runs out. A new ordering policy of (Q, R) continuous review model with forecast demand is developed to reduce inventory in the external warehouse. The policy parameters of four most commonly used paperboards are determined and simulations based on historical demand data are run to evaluate the policy. A simulation with Crystal Ball is also run to prove the efficacy of the (Q, R) method. Both the theoretical and simulation results suggest that the new ordering policy satisfies the stock-out requirement and ports' inventory day requirement. Thus Blue Brick can eliminate the four common paperboards' inventory in the external warehouse. Moreover if the forecast errors of other paperboards have the same levels as the ones of the four common paperboards, Blue Brick could eliminate all the inventories in the external warehouse.

Papageorgiou, Dimitri Jason. "Optimization in maritime inventory routing." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/50117.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of this thesis is to develop effective solution techniques for large-scale maritime inventory routing problems that possess a core substructure common in many real-world applications. We use the term “large-scale” to refer to problems whose standard mixed-integer linear programming (MIP) formulations involve tens of thousands of binary decision variables and tens of thousands of constraints and require days to solve on a personal computer. Although a large body of literature already exists for problems combining vehicle routing and inventory control for road-based applications, relatively little work has been published in the realm of maritime logistics. A major contribution of this research is in the advancement of novel methods for tackling problems orders of magnitude larger than most of those considered in the literature. Coordinating the movement of massive vessels all around the globe to deliver large quantities of high value products is a challenging and important problem within the maritime transportation industry. After introducing a core maritime inventory routing model to aid decision-makers with their coordination efforts, we make three main contributions. First, we present a two-stage algorithm that exploits aggregation and decomposition to produce provably good solutions to complex instances with a 60-period (two-month) planning horizon. Not only is our solution approach different from previous methods discussed in the maritime transportation literature, but computational experience shows that our approach is promising. Second, building on the recent successes of approximate dynamic programming (ADP) for road-based applications, we present an ADP procedure to quickly generate good solutions to maritime inventory routing problems with a long planning horizon of up to 365 periods. For instances with many ports (customers) and many vessels, leading MIP solvers often require hours to produce good solutions even when the planning horizon is limited to 90 periods. Our approach requires minutes. Our algorithm operates by solving many small subproblems and, in so doing, collecting and learning information about how to produce better solutions. Our final research contribution is a polyhedral study of an optimization problem that was motivated by maritime inventory routing, but is applicable to a more general class of problems. Numerous planning models within the chemical, petroleum, and process industries involve coordinating the movement of raw materials in a distribution network so that they can be blended into final products. The uncapacitated fixed-charge transportation problem with blending (FCTPwB) that we study captures a core structure encountered in many of these environments. We model the FCTPwB as a mixed-integer linear program and derive two classes of facets, both exponential in size, for the convex hull of solutions for the problem with a single consumer and show that they can be separated in polynomial time. Finally, a computational study demonstrates that these classes of facets are effective in reducing the integrality gap and solution time for more general instances of the FCTPwB.

Modern retail has been significantly affected by the surge in online platforms and product options. Customers have comfortably settled into an omni-channel model, in which they buy different products through different channels. While customers expect a seamless process in getting the products they are looking for, they are also more influenced by the selection offered when unsure of what to buy. For retailers, the transition to omnichannel means more complex problems of inventory positioning and demand fulfillment, but also an opportunity to influence their customers through the assortments they offer, especially online. In this thesis, we study two main challenges related to inventory positioning in omni-channel and provide new models and algorithms. First, we study the problem of choice modeling and assortment optimization. Choice models aim to capture customer preferences across products and have been extensively studied.
Whereas numerous models have been proposed, few are tractable, and many have been shown to be limited in capturing customer preferences, due to their underlying assumptions on consumer behavior. In the first part of this thesis, we introduce a new class of models, which we call synergistic, and show both theoretically and empirically, that these models dominate all existing ones in capturing consumer preferences. We show the associated optimization problems for the synergistic models are NP-hard, but provide IP-based algorithms, which are reasonably tractable in practice. Finally, we show that these models can be represented as ReLU activated neural networks. Therefore, state of the art methods in the neural networks field can be leveraged to efficiently estimate these models and optimize over them, to inform assortment optimization decisions.
In the second part of the thesis, we focus on inventory planning for a physical retailer, considering the complex dynamics in the store involving the backroom, and the need to minimize its use. The question is motivated by our collaborator, a large US retail chain, striving to leverage their store assets as shipping hubs. We present a case study of working with real data to understand the complexities of this question and identify steps a retailer can take to become leaner.

Summerfield, Nichalin Suakkaphong. "Games of Decentralized Inventory Management." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194894.

Abstract:
Any decentralized retail or wholesale system of competing entities requires a benefit sharing arrangement when competing entities collaborate after their demands are realized. For instance, consider a distribution system similar to the observed behavior of independent car dealerships. If a dealership does not have in stock the car requested by a customer, it might consider acquiring it from a competing dealer. Such behavior raises questions about competitive procurement strategies that achieve system optimal outcomes. This dissertation consists of three main bodies of work contained respectively in chapters 2, 3, and 4. In the first work -- chapter 2, we examine a decentralized system that adopts an ex-post agreed transfer payment approach proposed by Anupindi et al. (Manuf. Serv. Oper.Manag. 4(3):349-368, 2001). In particular, we state a set of conditions on cost parameters and distributions that guarantee uniqueness of pure strategy Nash equilibrium. In the second work -- chapter 3, we introduce a multilevel graph framework that links decentralized inventory distribution models as a network of stochastic programming with recourse problems. This framework depicts independent retailers who maximize their individual expected profits, with each retailer independently procuring inventory in the ex-ante stage in response to forecasted demand and anticipated cooperative recourse action of all retailers in the system. The graph framework clarifies the modeling connection between problems in a taxonomy of decentralized inventory distribution models. This unifying perspective links the past work and shades light on future research directions. In the last work -- chapter 4, we examine and recast the biform games modeling framework as two-stage stochastic programming with recourse. Biform games modeling framework addresses two-stage games with competitive first stage and cooperative second stage without ex-ante agreement on profit sharing scheme. The two-stage stochastic programming view of biform games is demonstrated on examples from all the known examples regarding operational decision problems of competing firms from the literature. It allows an “old” mathematical methodology to showcase its versatility in modeling combined competitive and cooperative game options. In short, this dissertation provides important insights, clarifications, and strategic limitations regarding collaborations in decentralized distribution system.

Abstract:
Inventories totaling 1.7 trillion U.S. dollars represent an opportunity for U.S. manufacturers. This exploratory case study researched supply chain strategies used to manage inventory in manufacturing operations of a U.S. manufacturing company. A mature value chain contained within a single organization using the value chain framework was the basis for this study. Individual interviews conducted with 16 managers responsible for defining and implementing inventory control strategies, and 4 internal users provided primary information for the study. Other sources of information included a value chain map created through the observation of operations, various inventory measurements, and policies and guidelines related to managing inventory levels. An inductive content analysis employing zero-level coding of the interview transcripts identified 4 themes that describe inventory control strategies as economic order quantity, kanban, vendor managed inventory, and process integration. Physical observation of the value chain, review of supporting documents, and analysis of inventory data ensured the trustworthiness of interpreted themes. Findings identified no single inventory control strategy that fit all applications. Findings also revealed that the financial governing bodies' measurements were not the best tools for operational managers' improvement activities related to inventory control. Included are measures providing alternative means to gauge inventory efficiency. With the results of this study, managers may develop effective strategies to optimize inventory and improve material flow. Manufacturing managers improving material flow may promote sustainability of raw materials and business efficiencies through reduced waste, improved environmental conditions, and increased employment opportunities in associated communities.

Over the past few years, the Intel Fab-17 facility has aggressively pursued lean methodology to reduce the manufacturing costs associated with its aging 200mm diameter wafer process. One area ripe with improvement opportunities is the processes supplying and managing Test Wafers, which are non-production wafers used to verify production tools and operations. With four test wafer types, hundreds of different sequences of operations (defined as routes), and varying consumption trends, thousands of decisions must be made daily to ensure Test Wafers are available on time and with the proper base characteristics. To further illustrate the magnitude and importance of Test Wafer systems, roughly the same number of Test Wafers are introduced each time period into the fab as production wafers. Through direct observation and process mapping techniques, I identified two system level projects, each containing enormous cost and performance improvements to the entire facility. Project One: Reallocating excess inventory In analyzing the Test Wafer inventory quantity and consumption rates in primary stockroom, I noticed that certain routes had excess inventory while others were deficient, thus leading to significantly more expensive Test Wafers types to be used instead. In order to maximize realized cost savings, I developed a linear optimization program which distributed excess Test Wafer inventory to areas of need. Different re-allocation costs, initial material specifications, and forecasted consumption needs constrained the quantity and location for this redistribution.
(cont.) Per the optimization program's recommendations, I led a team to re-allocate the largest excess Test Wafer inventory area to twelve different locations. The savings for this project correspond to over a year's worth of test wafer inventory now available for these routes and banks. Project Two: Determining supply decisions from a Days of Inventory (DOI) metric The previous process for supplying Test Wafers into the fab was complicated, lacked standardization, required significant human intervention, and led to tool performance impacts despite high operating costs. To address these issues, I designed, developed, and implemented a program which prioritized and calculated thousands of test wafer decisions based upon a Days of Inventory (DOI) metric. By prioritizing actions based on the time until stock out, cost-effective decisions were made while ensuring Test Wafers are available at a tool when needed. The program forecasted short term consumption using an Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EMWA) and pulled real-time inventory and available Test Wafer material to support the calculations and decision logic. After a successful fab-wide pilot, the "DOI Scheduler" program has now replaced the previous test wafer supply process. As a result, internal fab test wafer inventory will decrease by approximately 35% (as of March 2009, inventory has dropped by 15% and continues downward), Test Wafer availability will improve by approximately 75%, and 4 to 5 hrs a week of labor resources have been saved.
(cont.) Equally important, the prior non-standard process is now standardized, enabling future Test Wafer improvement projects and allowing root cause analysis on previously unsolvable problems.

Companies usually face thousands of inventory items with various properties. Traditional inventory management strategies developed for single item are less effective. It has been shown that multi-item inventory control methods perform better when dealing with multiple items. In addition, inventory classification can also be applied for more efficient management in this situation. However, it is seldom studied how to combine inventory classification and multi-item inventory control methods on inventory management and how the combination performs. This research considers the application of the combination of inventory classification and multi-item inventory control methods. Items are first classified into groups. Multi-item inventory control methods are then applied on each group. Four classification techniques and two multi-item inventory control methods are considered. Numerical experiment is conducted and the performances and their differences based on related costs are compared and discussed. The results show the combination of the two techniques provides more effective management.

ABSTRACT------Exposure to adverse situations, potentially induces a maladaptative stress reaction, and can be constituted as a precursor of positive psychological changes at personal, relational and spiritual domains. These positive changes as a result from coping with trauma are known as "posttraumatic growth". This study means to provide empirical evidence, through the study of the psychometric characteristics of the instruments, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI); Core Beliefs Inventory (CBI); Event Related Rumination Inventory (ERRI) and Distress Disclosure Index (DDI). These instruments assess the positive changes as a result of struggle with higly challenging adverse events (PTGI); challenge of core beliefs (CBI); the style of rumination (ERRI) and emotional disclosure (DDI). The results obtained from the analysis of the factor structure, the internal consistency indices and the construct validity were collected from a sample of 510 participants collected from normative Portuguese population. The results indicate that the four instruments analyzed in this study, have good levels of sensitivity, reliability, validity, and adjustment. The analysis of internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, showed good internal consistency for the total scale, as well as its dimensions, in all instruments under study. The data shows that the use of these instruments is recommended both in the clinical setting and research.

Abstract:
Riverview Hospital is a provincial mental health facility and is located in Coquitlam, British Columbia, a city in the northeast area of Metro Vancouver. Riverview is on a sloping site and bordered on the east by the Lougheed Highway. In 1904, an 405 hectare site was designated by the provincial government as the “Hospital for the Mind at Mount Coquitlam”. The current Riverview site is 98.75 hectares and consists of the majority of the uplands portion of the original land dedication. The lowland portion of the original site, located in the flood plain of the Coquitlam and Fraser Rivers, was the location of Colony Farm, now Colony Farm Regional Park, which was a provincially owned research farm and provided much of the food and agricultural products to Riverview. The history and function of Riverview and Colony Farm are intrinsically linked. However this project deals principally with only the Riverview Hospital portion of the site. Riverview is also closely linked with Woodlands, formally The Public Hospital for the Insane and originally The Provincial Asylum, located in New Westminster. A history and inventory of Woodlands is also outside the scope of this project. Riverview, through its design and layout, illustrates the development of the theory and practice of mental health care. Prior to the establishment of Riverview, the Provincial Asylum at New Westminster was severely overcrowded and necessitated the acquisition of new land for a new institution. The use of voluntary patient labour in gardens and farms had previously been established at the Provincial Asylum. (Davies, 1994) Dr. Henry Esson Young, the Provincial Secretary and Minister of Education was inspired by the theories of the therapeutic benefits of a natural setting and the sense of purpose that comes through work in the treatment of mental illness. (ibid) There are numerous buildings on the Riverview site, including several massive masonry wards, hospital structures, housing, service buildings and an active cemetery. Access roads are arranged in a linear manner that follows the site’s natural topographic contours, and there are large vistas to the east across the Coquitlam River and south across the Fraser River. Associated with the site and its buildings are thousands of mature trees and plantings including many notable rare and large specimen trees. Natural meadows, ravines and watercourses are also found on site. Riverview also provides an ecological connection to Colony Farm to the east and Riverview Forest to the west. Riverview experienced rapid population increases from the 1930’s through the 1950’s. This era is commonly considered the sites heyday. Riverview represents a legacy of over a century of therapeutic care, and is an exceptional creative achievement in concept, design and planning to provide quality mental health care. Early in its history Riverview was recognized as a model of psychiatric health care and was noted as one of the most progressive mental health care facilities in North America. (Luxton, 2008) Riverview remains a working mental health facility and a sanctuary for patients. Since public and government interest in the Riverview site was piqued in the mid-1990’s there have been many reports written on various aspects of the site, including several of the individual buildings and the arboretum, however a full inventory of the site has never been taken. The goal of this project is to provide an inventory of all the buildings and important landscape features on the Riverview site. The project also seeks to provide a complete snapshot of Riverview as it exists in its current state and to collect a number of ideas from different reports into one document. It will also help to inform the City of Coquitlam and other decision markers as they decide of the future of the Riverview site. While not all of the buildings provide heritage value, Riverview should be taken as a collection and forms a cultural landscape. As a consequence the whole site is more valuable than any one of the individual pieces.
