Increased global trade and travel have led to a rise in the number of invasive alien species (IAS), i.e. species introduced by humans in geographic areas where are not naturally found, worldwide. Despite the recognized role of wildlife, as well as of wildlife translocations, in the emergence and re-emergence of infections of public health significance, IAS remain mainly studied for their environmental impacts, and their disease risk towards humans and animals is still largely neglected by health professionals. The main aim of this thesis is therefore to cover this gap by setting the ground for a new “invasion epidemiology” field, and this has been done through two main steps: the review and analysis of both the mechanisms underlying IAS disease risk and the information available in literature on IAS pathogens, and the development of a standardized qualitative disease risk assessment method, applicable to different geographic contexts, to assess the risk of mammal IAS to impact on human and animal health. First, I reviewed the existing biological and ecological literature on IAS to identify the main mechanisms by which animal IAS may affect disease risk in their area of release. IAS resulted to potentially affect disease risk both directly, by acting as hosts of infectious agents, thus possibly leading to the introduction of new pathogens, and/or the amplification of endemic ones, or indirectly, by altering the ecosystem equilibrium, through competitive and trophic interactions with native host species or the modification of local habitats. This literature review highlighted how IAS may have important health implications, which should be better acknowledged by people working in the human and animal health field, and how the mechanisms underlying the sanitary outcome of a biological invasion, and in particular indirect ones, are extremely complex, being the product of multiple factors. Acknowledging the important limitations of our current ability to predict possible health impacts driven by indirect mechanisms, I decided to address the issue of IAS disease risk by focusing specifically on IAS possible role as infectious agents’ host. As information on IAS pathogens is not systematized, preventing from knowing the amount and quality of available data to inform possible disease risk assessment procedures, I systematically reviewed the literature on the infectious agents of the main mammal species of European Union concern. Current knowledge on the pathogens harbored by mammal IAS was evaluated through different statistical approaches: the identification of the main factors associated with research intensity and the observed pathogen species richness, the estimation of the true helminth species richness, and a meta-analysis of prevalence of the pathogens of public and animal health significance. Results highlighted the existence of strong information gaps and biases in the way research on mammal IAS pathogens is carried out, the current underestimation of the amount of pathogens harbored by these species and high levels of uncertainty in the pooled prevalence of pathogens of public and animal health significance. However, the review confirmed that mammal IAS harbor pathogens of human and animal health significance, and therefore, the need to identify high-risk species. Considering that the existing knowledge gaps would have resulted in strong limitations in informing a risk assessment procedure, I developed a qualitative disease risk assessment methodology informed by expert opinion. This tool is specifically aimed at assessing IAS disease risk towards humans, domestic animal populations, and/or wildlife populations and allows to obtain a list of the pathogens of animal and human health significance that mammal IAS could transmit to a population of interest (directly or through the communities of local hosts), each with the related level of risk and uncertainty. Key features of the tool are its flexibility, being applicable to different contexts and for different purposes, and the high resolution of the mechanisms under assessment, which make possible for risk managers identifying the most critical pathogens and mechanisms involved in disease risk, allowing them to direct targeted actions and surveillance plans. Finally, the need to combine multiple likelihood estimates deriving from several pathways in an overall risk estimate led me to tackle a methodological aspect of qualitative risk assessment procedures, and I proposed a standardized method applicable in such cases, to reduce the subjectivity that relies in the different ways multiple estimates are currently combined.

The incidental introduction of alien phytophagous insects and mites has become quite a common event in the world owing to intensive commercial exchanges of plants and goods and ever-increasing tourist traffic. There is evidence that this phenomenon is increasing, in spite of the control measures of the EU phytosanitary system in order to minimize unintentional introductions. The introduction of an alien species in a new ecosystem and the interaction between an alien species and the autochthonous species usually has many disadvantages. The alien species can dominate the invaded ecosystems and eventually become an invasive species due also to the absence or paucity of natural enemies. These invasions can affect the native species that become less common or threatened with extinction. Apart from the environmental impacts alien species are known for their economic and health impacts. In this study were investigated mostly 3 recently introduced alien species in Italy, namely Tuberocephalus (Trichosiphoniella) tianmushanensis Zang (Hemiptera Aphididae), Cydalima perspectalis (=Glyphodes) (Walker, 1859) (Lepidoptera Crambideae), the box caterpillar and Phenacoccus defectus Ferris (Rhynchota Pseudococcidae). The first chapter is a background of invasive ecology and presents with graphs the high number of alien species introduced in Europe the last years.. The second chapter is dealing with Tuberocephalus (Trichosiphoniella) tianmushanensis Zang, an Asiatic heteroecious species so far not recorded in Italy. This species was collected in the University Botanical Garden of Padova in spring 2012. On May 30, 2012 reddish-pink galls, with aphids inside, were observed on the leaves of two Prunus subhirtella cv. pendula trees (Rosaceae) (Weeping Higan Cherry), about 40 years old. Once mounted on slides the aphids were identified as Tuberocephalus (Trichosiphoniella) tianmushanensis Zang. The purposes of this study were to collect data on species distribution over the territory, by monitoring ornamental cherry trees in the Veneto region, to observe the phenology and biology of the Asiatic aphid, to study the life-cycle in screen houses and outdoors, to verify if its secondary host plant was an Artemisia sp., as reported in bibliography. Another aspect of the work was to provide an overview of the species belonging to the genus Tuberocephalus so far described, by consulting the available literature. It was made an effort to gather all the currently available information for each species, its distribution and information on their biology mainly regarding the first and secondary host plants. Results showed that Tuberocephalus (T.) tianmushanensis, is now considered acclimatized in our environment. The aphid is closely related to the presence of its primary host Prunus subhirtella v. pendula with pink flowers. The aphid can carry on two generations on Prunus and can induce two types of leaf galls. The gall A is induced by the fundatrix, while the gall B is induced by the fundatrigeniae. The trial of colonization on Artemisia vulgaris, failed for the second successive year so possibly Artemisia vulgaris is not the secondary host plant of the aphid, as reported in literature. The third chapter concers Cydalima perspectalis (Lepidoptera, Crambiidae) (Walker, 1859), an asiatic pest of Buxus. It was reported for the first time in Europe in Germany in 2007. In Italy it was detected in 2011, in Lombardy, Como province. In a very short time it invaded the other northern regions and was recorded in Veneto in 2012. The larvae feed on leaves and shoots of the box trees and the infestations lead to defoliation of the plants. The objective of this study was to investigate the phenology of C. perspectalis. More precisely we examined the biological cycle of life, the number of molts and the overwintering stage. In addition host plants were monitored by regular samplings, from late winter to late fall to collect data on species distribution over the territory. The life-cycle was studied in screen houses and in the field, to investigate the role of potential predators and parasitoids. Additionally experiments were conducted with pheromones traps with the purpose of checking, monitoring and collecting data on species distribution over the territory, finding any possible differences based on climate, checking the potential differences between types of traps. According to the results of 2014 and 2015 in the Veneto Region C. perspectalis develops three generations / year. In 2014 the overwintering larvae started their activity early in February until mid-April while in 2015 one month later until end of April probably due to different climate conditions between these years. C. perspectalis overwinters in a silk cocoon in-between the leaves as a larva of 2nd instar and the number of larval instar is 5. The number of captures from the sex pheromones traps was low. No differences were observed between the two types of pheromones. C. perspectalis has spread quickly in our environment proving that it has acclimatized. So far, it seems there has been no adaptation by indigenous natural enemies (parasitoids) to C. persectalis. The next chapter is focued on the difficulty to separate the Phenacoccus solani Ferris and P. defectus Ferris (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae). They are morphologically similar and the microscopic morphological characters of the adult female alone are not enough. In order to resolve their identity, a canonical variates morphological analysis of 199 specimens from different geographical origins and host plants and a molecular analysis of the CO1 and 28S genes were performed. The morphological analysis supported synonymy of the two species, as although the type specimens of the "species" are widely separated from each other in the canonical variates plot, they are all part of a continuous range of variation. The molecular analysis showed that P. solani and P. defectus are grouped in the same clade. On the basis of the morphological and molecular analyses, P. defectus is synonymized under the senior name P. solani, syn. n. Finally a zoogeographic analysis of the Greek scale insects fauna (Hemiptera, Coccoidea) was carried out with the aim to highlight how many alien scale insects species are so far present in the Greek territory. According to the last data, the scale insect fauna of whole Greek territory comprehends 207 species; a total of 187 species are recorded in mainland Greece and minor islands, whereas only 87 scale species are known so far in the island of Crete. The most numerous families are the Diaspididae, with 86 species in total, followed by Coccidae, with 35 species and by Pseudococcidae, with 34 species. The results of a first zoogeographical analysis of scale insect fauna of mainland Greece and the island of Crete is also presented. Five scale species, respectively four in mainland Greece and one in Crete, are considered as endemic. This analysis demonstrated that alien scale insects, introduced and acclimatized a long time ago or recent invaders, make up 30% of the Greek scale insects fauna.<br>Tra le specie di Phenacoccus neartiche, P. defectus Ferris, P. solani Ferris è P. solenopsis Tinsley condividono l’insolito carattere morfologico dell’assenza di pori pentaoculari è sono morfologicamente simili da rendere difficile l’ identificazione. Il problema della loro identificazione è stato evidenziato da diversi autori (McKenzie, 1967; Williams & Granara de Willink, 1992; Culik & Gullan, 2005; Pellizzari & Porcelli, 2013), benché sia generalmente riconosciuto che P. solenopsis possieda un maggior numero di pori multiloculari e un circulus di maggiori dimensioni rispetto alle altre due specie; inoltre quest’ultima è una specie bisessuale mentre le altre due si riproducono per partenogenesi. Le tre specie di cocciniglie condividono diverse piante ospite. In accordo con Hodgson et al. (2008) ci sono elementi che supportano l’ipotesi che si tratti di varianti di una singola specie. Per definire meglio il loro status tassonomico, abbiamo amplificato mediante PCR e sequenziato il frammento di DNA ‘barcode’ di P. solani, P. solenopsis, e P. defectus.

The developments of species distribution modeling techniques have brought new opportunities in the field of biological invasion management. In particular, statistical niche modeling for spatio-temporal predictions of species’ distribution is a widely spread tool that has proved its efficiency. The main purpose of this Master thesis is to study applicability of species distribution modeling to invasive alien species, with the aim of supporting efficient decision-making for their prevention. Some research questions are: how useful can species distribution modeling be for invasives’ prevention? Is distribution modeling technically feasible in the case of invasive species? What types of techniques are recommended to model distributions of IAS? What are the limits of such a tool? The methods employed to answer these questions are literature review and expert advice. I found that species distribution models can provide risk maps which are necessary to enable effective invasive alien species’ prevention. However intrinsic characteristics of invasives introduce uncertainties in the predictions made. Consequently several preliminary analyses should be conducted before applying the distribution model. Finally recommendations were made on the most appropriate distribution modeling technique to use depending on the urgency of the situation and the availability of data.<br>Utvecklingen av metoder för modelering av artdistribution har medfört nya möjligheter inom området hantering av biologiska invasioner. Statistisk nischmodelering för spatio-temporala förutsägelser av arters distribution är ett väl använt verktyg som har visat sig vara effektivt. Det övergripande målet med det här arbetet har varit att studera hur lämpad artmodelering är vid förebyggande av invasioner av främmande arter. Det har även undersökts huruvida metoden kan bidra till bättre och enklare beslutsfattande när det kommer till att förhindra sådana invasioner. Forskningsfrågorna lyder: hur användbart är fördelningsmodelering för förebyggande av spriding av invasiva arter? Är distributionsmodelering tekniskt genomförbar när det gäller invasiva arter? Vilka olika tekniker rekommenderas för att modelera spridningen av invasiva arter? Vilka begräsningar har modelerna? De metoder som används är litteraturöversikt och expertråd. Resultaten visar att artdistributionsmodelering kan bidra till att sammanställa riskkartor som är nödvändiga för att möjliggöra ett förebyggande arbete. Men speciella egenskaper hos de invasiva arterna som är svåra att förutse skapar osäkerheter i resultatet. Därför kan preliminära analyser med fördel genomföras innan modelering. I slutsatserna återfinns rekommendationer för vilken distributionsmodelteknik man bör använda, beroende av hur brådskande situationen är och om data finns tillgängligt.

The biodiversity of our planet is facing a severe crisis. Habitat alteration, climate change, the spread of alien species, and overexploitation are major drivers of biodiversity loss. These global change drivers often act jointly or even synergistically on population declines. To identify priorities for conservation, it is thus essential to compare the relative impact of different threats on biodiversity. Amphibians are the vertebrates showing both the largest proportion of threatened species and the highest rate of decline. Out of the ~6,800 amphibian species assessed by the IUCN, more than 4,000 species are threatened by at least one stressor, and more than 2,000 by at least two stressors. Habitat modification (alteration and/or destruction) and alien species are the two factors threatening the largest number of amphibian species. For this reason, this thesis investigates the role of habitat modification and invasive alien species in determining the temporal dynamics of amphibian populations. The role of these stressors is examined at different spatial scales and jointly with other factors such as microhabitat, landscape, or climatic variables. The first study (Chapter 2) is a continental-scale analysis, which evaluates the combined effects of alien species, habitat availability, habitat changes, and climate change in determining population trends of European amphibian (and some reptile) species over the last 45 years. The results showed that populations declined more often in areas with a high number of alien species and where climate change has caused a loss of climatic suitability. The effect of habitat availability was not relevant when averaged across species; however, when excluding the two commonest species, habitat loss was the main correlate of negative population trends for the remaining species. Furthermore, I observed a strong interaction between habitat availability and the richness of alien species, which indicated that the negative impact of alien species was particularly strong for populations living in landscapes with less suitable habitat Then, the thesis focuses on a specific system: the invasion of the red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii in Italy, and its effect on the population dynamics of amphibians. The second study (Chapter 3) presents the updated distribution of the red swamp crayfish in Italy. Thirty years after its first record in Italy in 1989, the red swamp crayfish has invaded 80% of Italian provinces. The invasion is particularly extensive in central and northern Italy, where this invasive crayfish is present in 100% and 96% of provinces, respectively. Given the strong negative effects that the red swamp crayfish can exert on native amphibians, its widespread distribution raises concern about the future status of conservation of the Italian batrachofauna. Chapter 4 analyses site occupancy data of newts in northern Italy, in an area suffering the introduction of the invasive crayfish, in order to investigate the role of microhabitat, landscape change, and invasive species in determining the decline of two newt species through time. Initial occupancy of newts was negatively affected by landscape alteration (i.e. urban and agricultural cover) and by the presence of fish. Both species suffered a strong decline, with a net loss of site occupancy of 25%‒36% along the study period. After the crayfish invasion, the main drivers of population dynamics sharply shifted, and occupancy changes were not determined by landscape or microhabitat alterations, as the strongest predictor of local extinctions was the colonization of wetlands by invasive crayfish. The last study (Chapter 5) focuses on the effect of habitat characteristics and invasive crayfish in determining the temporal dynamics of the amphibian community in a large number of wetlands in northern Italy. Since connectivity among wetlands is fundamental for the dynamics of spatially structured populations, we considered two measures of connectivity acting on each focal wetland: incidence of the focal species, and incidence of invasive crayfish. Survival and colonization of local populations were jointly determined by factors acting at different scales. Survival probability was positively related to the area and the permanence of wetlands, while it showed a negative relationship with the occurrence of fish. Colonization probability was highest in semi-permanent wetlands and in sites with a high incidence of the focal species in nearby sites. Furthermore, the incidence of invasive crayfish emerged as one of the strongest drivers of colonization probability. In this thesis, I showed that invasive alien species are a major driver of the decline of European amphibians. The negative effect of invasive alien species acted differently across species and spatial scales. While the site-level impact was evident only for a subset of species, the landscape-level effect of invasive crayfish was ubiquitous across the whole amphibian community. Habitat modification showed a less evident effect, but invasive alien species and habitat modification can strongly interact: the negative effect of alien species is exacerbated in highly modified landscapes. It is thus essential to directly prevent and manage the spread of alien species, while simultaneously preserving natural landscapes. This can help in mitigating the negative effects of invasives, even when habitat alteration is not the main threatening factor.

Investigations were carried out into the allelopathic potential of the invasive alien annual Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera Royle) using a series of bioassays, including ones developed or adapted for this study. They were evaluated for their suitability to detect three of the four main modes of allelochemical release, namely leaching, exudation and decomposition. Assays which involved the measurement of lettuce radicles and hypocotyls gave reliable results and allowed a range of different Impatiens material, both living and dead, to be assessed and ranked according to the allelopathic effects demonstrated. Attempts were made to isolate resource competition from allelopathy using separately grown but connected donor and receiver plants and a density dependent design where single I. glandulifera plants were grown in pots with variable numbers of receiver plants. Results proved inconclusive. Initial experiments showed that the allelopathic potential of I. glandulifera varied according to the organ from which the material was derived. Pods, leaves and stems produced the greatest inhibition of lettuce seedlings. Effects on germination were not significant at most of the concentrations tested. Live roots of I. glandulifera plants produced pronounced orange staining of the agar into which they were placed and showed clear evidence of distance dependent inhibition of lettuce radicles. Effects were limited to growth rather than germination of the test plants. Germinating I. glandulifera seeds caused a significant inhibition of lettuce radicle elongation when the two species were grown together in an agar medium. The inhibitory effects increased significantly with increasing exposure time. Increasing I. glandulifera seedling number also produced significant reductions in lettuce radicle length. Dormant seeds, by contrast, stimulated growth. Dead seeds did not produce significant changes to the growth of the test plants. When rhizosphere soil was gathered from pot grown I. glandulifera plants, the results were mixed. Initial samples inhibited growth, whereas those collected from dying plants over a period of weeks stimulated growth. Further experimentation is required before the indications of allelopathic interactions demonstrated here can be applied to the behaviour of wild populations of I. glandulifera.

Evolution can occur rapidly, along timescales that are traditionally regarded as 'ecological'. Despite growing acceptance among biologists of rapid evolution, a strong paradigm of contemporary evolution is still absent in many sub-disciplines. Here I apply a contemporary evolution viewpoint to conservation biology. Specifically, I examine the impact of cane toads (Bufo marinus) on Australian snakes. Toads were introduced into Australia in 1935, have spread rapidly and represent a novel, extremely toxic prey item to na�ve Australian predators (including snakes). Based on dietary preferences and geographic distributions I find that 49 species of Australian snake are potentially at risk from the invasion of the toad. Furthermore, examination of physiological resistance to toad toxin in 10 of these �at risk� species strongly suggests that most species of Australian snake are poorly equipped to deal with a likely dose of toad toxin. Even species that are highly resistant to toad toxin (such as the keelback, Tropidonophis mairii) face indirect fitness costs associated with consuming toads. Within a population of snakes however, the impact of toads is unlikely to be random. For example, the examination of several component allometries describing the interaction between snakes and toads revealed that, within a species, smaller snakes are more likely to ingest a fatal dose of toad toxin than are larger snakes. Further consideration of the interaction between snakes and toads suggests that toads will not only be exerting differential impact on snakes based upon morphology, but also exert non-random selection on prey preference and resistance to toad toxin in snake populations. To examine the possibility of a morphological response by snakes to toads, I examined changes in the body size and relative head size of four species of snake as a consequence of time since exposure to toads. Two of the species (green treesnakes and red-bellied blacksnakes) are predicted to face strong impacts from toads. These two species showed an increase in mean body size and a decrease in relative head size as a consequence of time since exposure to toads; both changes in an adaptive direction. In contrast, the other two species (keelbacks and swampsnakes) are predicted to face much lower impact from toads, and these two species showed little or no evidence of morphological change associated with time since exposure to toads. These results indicate an adaptive change in morphology at a rate that is proportional to the predicted level of impact for each species, strongly suggesting an evolved response. Red-bellied blacksnakes (a toad-vulnerable species) were further assessed for evolved responses in prey preference and toxin resistance. Comparisons between toad-exposed and toad-na�ve populations of blacksnakes revealed that snakes from toad-exposed populations exhibited slightly higher resistance to toad toxin and a much-reduced tendency to eat toads, when compared with toad-na�ve snakes. Na�ve snakes exhibited no tendency to learn avoidance of toxic prey, nor were they able to acquire resistance to toxin as a result of several sub-lethal doses, suggesting that the observed differences between populations is evolved rather than acquired. Together, these results strongly suggest that blacksnakes are exhibiting an evolved shift in prey preference and toxin resistance as a consequence of exposure to toads. Thus, it appears that snakes are exhibiting adaptation at multiple traits in response to exposure to toads. Given the high likelihood that these adaptive shifts have an evolved basis, it appears that the impact of toads will decrease with time in many snake populations. But what about toads? Because the outcome of the interaction between a toad and a snake is also mediated by the body size and relative toxicity of toads, it is important to understand how these traits vary in space and time. Exploratory analysis revealed that toads exhibit a decrease in body size and a decrease in relative toxicity as a consequence of time since colonisation, indicating that their impact on native predators decreases with time. Additionally, there appears to be meaningful spatial variation in toad relative toxicity, indicating that some populations of native predators are facing higher impact from toads than others. Overall, these results clearly indicate the importance of assessing the potential for rapid evolutionary response in impacted systems. Doing so may provide evidence that some species are in less trouble than originally thought. Additionally, and as more data accumulate, it may be possible to characterise certain categories of environmental impact by their potential for eliciting adaptive response from �impacted� species. This approach has strong implications for the way conservation priorities are set and the way in which conservation dependent populations are managed.

The problem of invasive alien species (IAS) is recognized as the second most serious threat to loss of biodiversity after habitat destruction. It is a problem largely created by humans as they transport and introduce species, deliberately and accidentally, from one part of the globe to another. The pressures exerted on biodiversity by international trade are one of the most serious aspects of the IAS problem. Although states are under obligations in international environmental law to prevent the entry of, and control, those alien species that threaten biodiversity, to date state practice has often been found wanting. In particular, quarantine regulation, which can be a state??s first line of defence against IAS, is mainly used by states to protect their farming and agricultural product sectors rather than biodiversity at large. The reasons for this include lack of domestic resources and lack of guidance at the international level. However, even if states were to expand the purview of quarantine, the question arises whether they would be able to use quarantine regulation to protect biodiversity from IAS while simultaneously fulfilling their international trade law obligations. This study seeks to answer this question by examining international environmental law and international trade law in their application to quarantine regulation. In doing so, the study identifies many areas of conflict. The different policies that underpin environmental and trade regimes mean that environmental concepts, such as the precautionary principle and the ecosystem approach, are difficult to apply within the international trade law regime. A way of achieving a more harmonized international response to the problem of IAS is suggested by incorporating environmental considerations into the international standards used by states to design and implement domestic quarantine measures. To facilitate the practical implementation of international standards the study further recommends appropriate financial and institutional capacity building mechanisms.

Biofouling on recreational yachts is an important vector for marine invasive alien species (MIAS) in many countries. There are various characteristics of a vessel that make it more susceptible to hull fouling. Yachts in three Western Cape marinas were surveyed to assess extent of fouling, hull maintenance patterns, travel history and yacht-owner awareness of MIAS issues.

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: I investigated the impacts of the invasive wattle species (Acacia mearnsii, A. dealbata, A. decurrens), on the ecological function and productivity of rangelands in South Africa and their ability to sustain livestock production. More specifically, this study set out to: (1) assess grazing areas at a national scale; (2) identify evidence of progressive impacts of these species on livestock production across a selection of magisterial districts; (3) determine the effects of A. mearnsii density on growth form dominance of indigenous plant species, and highlight how this translates into impacts in forage quality and quantity; (4) determine the effects of A. mearnsii invasion on soil resources and conditions (key determinates of ecological function) required to support grazing production; and finally (5) determine to effects that clearing operations have had on the provision of grazing resources. My results indicate that the level of overlap between wattle invasion and areas with a high grazing potential, at the national scale, is relatively low (2.9%). However, at a magisterial district scale, areas with a high grazing potential have a moderate (approximately 35.1% high grazing potential area under wattle invasion for highest invaded district) level of invasion. Scattered and moderate levels of invasion currently dominate or characterise these species invasion patterns. Both light and dense A. mearnsii invasions reduce grazing capacity. Dense invasion had the most severe effect reducing grazing capacity from 2 ha, required to support one large stock unit, to 8 ha. The clearing of this species was found to improve grazing capacity within 5 years. The reduction in grazing capacity following invasion was largely due to reduced basal cover and herbaceous biomass. The clearing of invaded sites was found to increase both basal cover and herbaceous biomass to pre-invasion levels. Acacia mearnsii invasion was found to affect certain soil properties. Under an A. mearnsii canopy, plant litter, carbon content of the soil and nitrogen concentrations were all found to be elevated. Overall, this study demonstrates that Acacia invasions have a significant effect on grazing resources at a local or site scale, and that for the eastern region of South Africa, these effects are ultimately scaled up to a district level. This is likely to have important financial and human well-being repercussions. However clearing and restoration programs are clearly able to reverse or mitigate these effects. This study therefore lends support to or complements other ecosystem service provision arguments for clearing alien invasive species.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die impak van die indringer- wattelbome spesies ( A. mearnsii , A. dealbata , A. decurrens) , op die ekologiese funksie en produktiwiteit van weivelde in Suid-Afrika en hul vermoë om vee produksie te onderhou was ondersoek. Meer spesifiek, is hierdie studie uiteengesit om: (1) ondersoek in te stel na die mate van oorvleueling tussen indringing deur wattelbome spesies en belangrike weidingsgebiede op 'n nasionale skaal; (2) bewyse te verskaf van die progressiewe impak van hierdie spesies op vee-produksie oor 'n seleksie van politieke distrikte, (3) die gevolge van A. mearnsii digtheid op groei vorm en oorheersing van inheemse plante te wys, en hoe dit voer kwaliteit en kwantiteit affekteer; (4) die gevolge van A. mearnsii indringing op grond hulpbronne sowel as die kondisie (sleutel bepalende faktore van ekologiese funksie) wat benodig word om weiding produksie te ondersteun vas te stel, en uiteindelik (5) om die gevolge van skoonmaak bedrywighede op die voorsiening van weiding hulpbronne te bepaaal. My resultate dui daarop dat die vlak van oorvleueling tussen die wattelbome indringing en gebiede met 'n hoë weiding potensiaal, by die nasionale skaal, relatief laag is (2’9 %). Maar op 'n landdrosdistrik skaal, het gebiede met 'n hoë weiding potensiaal 'n matige (ongeveer 35.1 % weiding potensiaal area onder wattelbome indringing vir die hoogste binnegevalde distrik ) vlak van indringing. Verspreide en matige vlakke van indringing oorheers tans of kenmerk hierdie spesies se indringings patrone. Beide lig en digte A. mearnsii besettings verminder dravermoë. Digte inval het die mees ernstige uitwerking en verminder dravermoë van 2 ha, wat nodig is om een grootvee-eenheid te ondersteun na 8 ha. Bevindinge wys dat die verwydering van hierdie spesies weiding kapasiteit kan verbeter binne 'n tydperk van 5 jaar. Includes bibliographies.<br>The unique vegetation in the lowlands of the fynbos biome is threatened by alien Acacia encroachment. The seed bank dynamics of the two most widespread invaders in the region, Acacia saligma and A. cyclops, was studied to elucidate those factors contributing most to their invasive success. This information was then used to assist in developing optimal control methods. On the basis of information available prior to this study, it was predicted that both species would have large, persistent seed banks in the so.il, and that seed bank processes would provide the - key to invasive success: namely, high seed longevity and heat-stimulated germination. Seed banks were monitored for several years following clearing of the parent stand, using either sites sampled in an earlier study, or sites providing chronosequences of clearing dates. Concurrently, a demographic study of the species' seed banks, including processes from seed rain through to seedling emergence and survival, was done in dense Acacia stands and in fynbos vegetation. Acacia saligma seed banks conformed to predictions, being large and persistent owing to high percentage viability and water-impermeable dormancy. Seed banks accumulate rapidly under dense stands and are "disturbance-coupled" as they have potentially high longevity unless stimulated to germinate by fire. Although A. cyclops seed banks also may be large and long-lived, they display variable percentage viability and dormancy, with the majority of a seed cohort surviving less than a year. Acacia cyclops seed banks do not respond to heat treatment and appear to be "disturbance-uncoupled".

Thesis (MSc )--Stellenbosch University, 2010.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The patterns of spread of non-indigenous species and the factors influencing their distribution have been studied infrequently on Southern Ocean Islands, where the prevention and control of biological invasions is a priority for conservation management. Owing to its remoteness and relatively small size, sub-Antarctic Marion Island provides an ideal opportunity to investigate the patterns of spread of invasive species and the factors likely influencing the distribution of alien species. Therefore, this study provides a spatially explicit documentation of the alien and invasive vascular plant species on Marion Island, the change in their distribution patterns through time, an assessment of the correlates of the current distributions, documentation of species rich areas, and provides recommendations for control based on these data and life history data available for each species. To ensure comprehensive coverage for the current estimate of distributions, a combination of a systematic (spatially explicit) survey and an ad hoc data collection method was used to examine the abundance and occupancy of each alien plant species across the island. The spatially explicit survey was used to identify sampling sites on a ½ minute by ½ minute scale (926 m × 926 m) which resulted in 348 sites across the island, whereas 2356 additional presence records were added during the ad hoc sampling. The residence time of each species was also estimated from the first records reported in various literature. While it has been documented in many studies that residence time is an important factor explaining species distribution, this study showed that distribution of alien species on Marion Island is not explained by residence time. The alien plant species on Marion Island differ markedly in their occupancy, distribution and rate of expansion. Agrostis stolonifera, Cerastium fontanum, Poa annua and Sagina procumbens are all expanding their ranges, whereas the range of Stellaria media appears to be contracting. Cerastium fontanum is the most widespread species on Marion Island while Sagina procumbens is the most abundant (number of records) and most rapidly expanding species on both Marion and Prince Edward Islands. Generalized linear models demonstrated that altitude, distance to human disturbed sites, and nearest neighbour presence are all significant and often strong correlates of spatial variation in alien vascular plant species richness and individual species presences on Marion Island. In particular, alien species richness on Marion Island declines sharply with increasing elevation, and that the distribution of the most widespread species is spatially aggregated. The surroundings of the Meteorological station and Mixed Pickle hut exhibit high richness and a high likelihood of the presence of individual species. None of the models developed for this study resulted in habitat type being significant explanatory variable for the distribution of any of the alien plant species, although from the records alone it is clear that the salt spray vegetation type is avoided. Together with assessments of the life history of the species, the current distribution data suggest that few alien plant species can be easily eradicated. Most are already too widespread already for cost effective eradication. Moreover, given the current rate of spread of Agrostis stolonifera, Cerastium fontanum, Poa annua and Sagina procumbens, and their apparent lack of habitat preference, it seems likely that within the next few decades many lowland habitats will be dominated by these species. By contrast, Rumex acestosella, Agrostis gigantea, Agropyron repens, Juncus effusus, Luzula cf. multiflora and the newly established shrub species should be the subject of control or eradication efforts. This thesis provides comprehensive baseline data on alien vascular plant distributions as a benchmark for future assessments.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die verspreidingspatrone van uitheemse spesies en die faktore wat hulle verspreiding beïnvloed is selde op Suidelike Oseaan Eilande bestudeer, waar die voorkoming en beheer van biologiese indringing ‘n prioriteit is vir bewaringsbestuur. Le specie aliene invasive (IAS) si stanno diffondendo a velocità sempre più elevata, con effetti molto negative a livello degli ecosistemi. Infatti, le IAS sono considerate una della maggiori cause della perdita di biodiversità e semplificazione degli habitat a livello globale. Di conseguenza, uno dei più grandi obiettivi in campo ecologico è quello di evidenziare le caratteristiche che ne favoriscono la diffusione. Quest’ ultime sono generalmente descritte dai ‘tratti funzionali’, definiti come caratteristiche morfologiche, fisiologiche o fenologiche, misurabili in un individuo dal livello cellulare sino a quello organismico. Lo scopo principale di questa Tesi è di evidenziare i tratti funzionali e meccanicistici (cioè tratti chiaramente associati a specifiche funzioni fisiologiche) alla base del processo di invasione. Nonostante il largo uso dei tratti funzionali, esistono ancora delle questioni parzialmente risolte riguardanti i metodi di misura. Nella prima parte di questa Tesi, ho quantificato la variabilità intraspecifica di due tratti modello, nell’ottica di definire un minimo e adeguato numero di repliche per misurare i tratti funzionali con una certa accuratezza e precisione (Studio 1). I tratti meccanicistici sono stati scarsamente utilizzati in campo ecologico, probabilmente perché la loro misura spesso richiede procedure difficili e molto lunghe. In questo senso, nello Studio 2 ho proposto un metodo semplificato per misurare il punto di perdita del turgore cellulare, un tratto meccanicistico direttamente associato alla resistenza all’aridità. Dopo aver cercato di trovare una risposta a domande di natura metodologica, ho concentrato le attività di ricerca su una delle più diffuse specie invasive, Ailanthus altissima (Aa). Nello Studio 3, ho confrontato tratti funzionali e meccanicistici di Aa e Fraxinus ornus (Fo) (che competono nelle stesse aree). La maggiore fitness associata ad Aa può essere legata alla sua bassa resistenza all’aridità, che è però controbilanciata da una alta efficienza di trasporto dell’acqua. In più, Aa ha mostrato una maggiore plasticità fenotipica di Fo in risposta a differenti condizioni di irraggiamento e nello studio 4 ho testato se questa sia una caratteristica presente anche nell’areale nativo di Aa (Cina). Tale studio dimostra che diverse modalità di aggiustamento del punto di perdita di turgore e una maggiore plasticità dei tratti legati ai costi di produzione delle foglie, possono essere alla base della maggiore fitness di Aa nel suo areale invasivo. Al fine di testare se i tratti descritti in Aa fossero condivisi da altre IAS, ho esteso l’analisi di tratti funzionali e meccanicistici su un più alto numero di specie (78 native e 15 IAS) sia erbacee che legnose (Studio 5). I risultati dimostrano che le IAS possiedono tratti che favoriscono una rapida crescita, indipendentemente dalla forma di crescita (erbacea o legnosa). Nello specifico, le IAS sembrano condividere una bassa resistenza all’aridità e una maggiore densità di venature fogliari, che influenzano i costi di produzione delle foglie e i tassi di crescita e di fotosintesi. Il coordinamento tra costi di produzione, livello di resistenza all’aridità e tratti legati alla fotosintesi può suggerire che la superiorità delle IAS possa dipendere da un maggiore capacità di accumulare biomassa pur con una simile o maggiore efficienza dell’uso dell’acqua. In conclusione, i tratti meccanicistici possono fornire nuove informazioni sui meccanismi alla base del processo di invasione delle IAS. Le nuove tecniche sviluppate per la loro misura potrebbero permettere di aumentare il numero di specie su cui misurare tratti meccanicistici riducendone i costi associati. La possibilità di generalizzare i pattern visti in questa Tesi ad una scala più ampia potrebbe infine portare alla definizione di un generale ‘Spettro di funzioni associate al processo di invasione’.<br>The spread of alien invasive species (IAS) is occurring at unprecedented rates, causing strong impacts on ecosystems. Indeed, IAS are deemed one of the major causes of loss of biodiversity and habitat simplification worldwide. In this light, finding determinants of invasiveness has become an uprising research topic in plant ecology. Such features are generally described in terms of ‘functional traits’, i.e. morphological, physiological, or phenological characteristics which are measurable at the individual level from the cell to the whole-organism. The research activities described in this Thesis, aimed at highlighting which traits and associated functions might be at the basis on the invasion process, by measuring common functional traits as well as mechanistic traits (with clearer linkage to a physiological function) on a large number of species. Despite the large use of traits, there are still some critical issues to be solved in trait-based ecology. In the first part of this Thesis, I provided an analysis of the intraspecific variability of two model traits and I suggested a minimum and optimal sampling size to measure functional traits with a desired level of precision and accuracy (Study 1). Mechanistic traits have been seldom included in trait-based studies, because of difficult and time-expensive procedures for their measurement. In this light, in Study 2 I proposed a simplified framework for the measurement of leaf turgor loss point, a key mechanistic trait related to drought resistance. After addressing these methodological issues, in the second part of this Thesis I focused my research activities on Ailanthus altissima (Aa), which is one of the most invasive species in Europe. In Study 3, I compared functional and mechanistic traits of Aa Fraxinus ornus (competing Aa in the same areas). The superior fitness of Aa might be related to its lower resistance to drought stress, which was counterbalanced by higher water transport efficiency. I also detected larger phenotypic plasticity of Aa in response to light availability and I wondered whether this feature was also present in individuals growing in its native range (China). The comparison between individuals of Aa growing in its exotic vs native range (Study 4) suggested that novel features related to turgor loss adjustment and the higher plasticity in traits related to leaf-construction costs could increase Aa fitness in response to different environmental conditions in its invasive range. To test whether the features described for Aa were shared by other IAS, I analysed several functional and mechanistic traits related to resource acquisition, with special reference to water-use strategies, on a large number of herbaceous and woody species (78 native and 15 invasive species) (Study 5). Results showed that IAS were characterised by traits that favour fast-growth, independently of growth form or habitats features. IAS consistently shared lower drought resistance and denser venation network, which are mechanistic traits directly influencing leaf construction costs and photosynthetic and growth rates. The coordination between construction costs, drought resistance and photosynthesis-related traits, suggested that IAS outperform native species due to higher potential for carbon gain and biomass accumulation, while sharing similar or higher levels of water-use efficiency. In conclusion, mechanistic traits could provide novel insight in the mechanisms underlying plant invasion. Novel techniques recently developed could allow the measurement of such traits on a wide number of species with reduced cost. Widening the scale of the analyses provided in this Thesis might help in the definition of the ‘Spectrum of functions associated to plant invasion’.

Biological invasions are reportedly one of the major contributory factors to biodiversity loss worldwide. The impacts of invasive alien plant (IAP) species on native communities are widely documented in the scientific literature, however, there is still a lack of detailed information on their impacts within the most vulnerable habitats. Riparian habitats are highly dynamic systems and naturally disturbed, making them particularly vulnerable to invasion. Climate change, directly or indirectly, is also predicted to adversely impact river systems, which may subsequently alter invasion rates and the impacts of IAPs. However, the interactions between climate and IAPs and their combined effects on vegetation have rarely been examined. To address these knowledge gaps, this thesis investigates: (1) the role of environmental variables, such as sediment loading or climate-related changes to river flow regime, on the abundance of IAPs within riparian zones; (2) how variation in IAP abundance impacts native vegetation, relative to the effects of native dominant plant species and (3) some of the mechanisms underlying the effects of IAPs in riparian habitats. Historic and recent field survey data were used to investigate changes in riparian vegetation on British rivers during the last 20 years. Analyses indicate that IAPs had a negative but small effect on native plant diversity. Overall, changes in land use and differences in flow regime between recording periods were the most important predictors of plant community change. Specifically, IAPs had a greater probability of being present along lowland rivers that experienced increased frequency of high flow events. On a local scale across rivers in Scotland, the abundance of IAPs was constrained by greater soil moisture in summer, whilst greater abundance was associated with tree-lined banks. Both native dominant species and IAPs negatively affected subordinate species abundance to a greater extent than species richness, although this effect varied spatially with bank elevation. Artificial turf mats were used to quantify viable propagules within riverine sediment deposited over-winter along invaded riverbanks. The data indicate that there is a legacy effect of IAP abundance, with the most invaded sites being associated with higher sediment loading the following year, though, contrary to the general pattern, 12 sediment associated propagules were scarcer at invaded sites. Moreover, lower above-ground native diversity was associated with sites which had been previously invaded. Plant species composition in the propagule bank and above-ground vegetation were highly dissimilar, particularly closest to the water’s edge at highly invaded sites. This suggests that mono-specific stands of IAPs proliferate best under less disturbed environmental conditions, although fluvial disturbance events may be required to create opportunities for initial establishment. The propagule bank contributed very little to the above-ground vegetation, nor did it limit invasion, suggesting that above-ground plant composition is largely dictated by competitive interactions. The findings presented in this thesis suggest that invasion by IAPs is an additional stressor for native vegetation within riparian habitats, modifying above-ground plant communities via competition and suppressing recruitment from the propagule bank. However, native dominant species common in riparian habitats also negatively impact, subordinate species via competition, in some cases equalling the effect of IAPs. Native dominant and IAP species are differently affected by environmental factors operating in the riparian zone, which may provide future opportunities for reducing and managing invasions.

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Macroecological relationships have rarely been studied at wide spatial scales and across geographic ranges of species in the field in the sub-Antarctic. In this thesis I examined the occupancy, distribution and abundance, and the relationships thereof, of indigenous plants and alien species at broad (island-wide) and fine scales across sub-Antarctic Marion Island. The impacts of alien species and their interactions with indigenous plants were also investigated. I examined the nature of the abundance structure of a cushion-forming, vascular plant, Azorella selago, at the island-wide scale. Moreover, the hypothesis that species reach their highest abundances at the centre of their geographic range and decline in abundance towards the range edges was tested. Azorella selago cushions were counted in 8 m x 8 m quadrats, placed regularly at 1 minute latitude and longitude intervals across Marion Island. Using spatially non-explicit and explicit methods, this study showed that the abundance structure of A. selago had a more complex pattern of high abundance patches and low abundance gaps in its island-wide distribution. Subsequently, the hypothesis of an abundant centre distribution was not supported for A. selago across Marion Island. Rather, there were sharp discontinuities at both the coastal and altitudinal (667 m a.s.l.) limits for the species, between which little pattern in altitudinal abundance structure existed. Mice (Mus musculus) have recently been found to cause extensive structural damage to A. selago. The structural influence of mice on vegetation structure at the landscape scale has largely been overlooked on many sub-Antarctic islands. I mapped the distribution of evidence of mouse damage within the cushions of A. selago across the island using systematic (at 1 minute latitude and longitude intervals) and opportunistic sampling. Approximately 40 % of the systematically sampled sites had evidence of mouse damage to A. selago. Furthermore, a third of cushions in opportunistically sampled sites was damaged. Mouse damage was high in sites of low A. selago abundance, emphasizing that impacts of mice may be greater in low cushion abundance areas. This damage sometimes led to the disintegration of entire cushions. Given that A. selago acts as a nurse plant and supports high abundances of indigenous invertebrates, the impacts of mice on this keystone species may have significant ecological implications. Studies on interactions between alien and indigenous plants are limited within the sub-Antarctic. I examined the fine-scale distributions and co-occurrences of alien plants, Agrostis stolonifera and Sagina procumbens, and the indigenous Acaena magellanica (in 2 m x 2 m plots, subdivided into 0.25 m x 0.25 m quadrats) along rivers on Marion Island. Environmental variables were important for the occurrence of these species. In particular, 42.95 % and 24.82 % of the deviance in the occurrence of A. stolonifera and S. procumbens, respectively, was explained by environmental variables, compared to 17.35 % for A. magellanica. Furthermore, the co-occurrence of A. magellanica with A. stolonifera was significantly influenced by environmental variables. Significant positive spatial associations between A. magellanica and A. stolonifera were found, while the interactions of either species with S. procumbens were either spatially dissociated or random. Therefore, this study highlighted that alien species are responding to different environmental variables and conditions on Marion Island. Sagina procumbens seems to be less sensitive to the island’s environmental conditions and may thus be affecting biodiversity at broader ranges. This thesis provides unparalleled data on the distributions and interactions of indigenous plants and alien species for Marion Island. Alien species are undoubtedly posing significant threats to indigenous plants on the island and this thesis presents insight into interactions of species, specifically plants, an approach underrepresented in the sub-Antarctic to date.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Makro-ekologiese verhoudings is selde bestudeer op wye ruimtelike skale en oor geografiese gebiede van spesies in die veld in die sub-Antarktiek. In hierdie tesis het ek die digtheid, bewoning, verspreiding en die verhoudings daarvan, van inheemse plante en uitheemse spesies ondersoek op breë (eiland-wyd) en smal skale oor sub-Antarktiese Marion Eiland. Die impakte van uitheemse spesies en hul interaksies met inheems plante is ook ondersoek. Ek het die aard van die digtheidstruktuur ondersoek van 'n kussing-vormende, vaatplant, Azorella selago, op die eiland-wydte skaal. Bowenal is die hipotese dat spesies hul hoogste digtheid bereik in die sentrum van hul geografies gebied en afneem in digtheid na die grense van die gebied getoets. Azorella selago kussings is getel in 8 m x 8 m kwadrante, wat eweredig geplaas is op 1 minuut breedte- en lengtegraad intervalle oor Marion Eiland. Deur gebruik te maak van ruimtelik nie-eksplisiete en eksplisiete metodes, het hierdie studie getoon dat die digtheidstruktuur van A. selago ‘n meer komplekse patroon van hoë digtheidslaslappe en lae digtheidsgapings in sy eiland-wyd verspreiding het. Vervolgens is die hipotese van 'n digte sentrum verspreiding nie gesteun vir A. selago oor Marion Eiland nie. Daar was eerder skerp diskontinuïteite by beide die kus- en hoërliggende (667 m bo seespieël) grense vir die spesie, waartussen daar ’n oneweredige patroon in digtheidstruktuur bestaan het. Onlangs is bevind dat muise (Mus musculus) uitgebreide struktuele skade aan A. selago veroorsaak. Die struktuele invloed van muise op plantegroei struktuur op landskapskaal is grootliks oor die hoof gesien op baie sub-Antarktiese eilande. Ek het die verspreiding van die bewyse van muisskade binne die kussings van A. selago oor die eiland gekarteer deur gebruik te maak van sistematiese (tot 1 minuut breedte- en lengtegraad intervalle) en opportunistiese opnames. Ongeveer 40 % van die sistematiese opname kwadrante het bewyse van muis skade aan A. selago vertoon. Verder, ‘n derde van die kussings in die opportunistiese opname kwadrante was beskadig. Muisskade was hoog in plotte met lae A. selago volopheid, wat beklemtoon dat impakte van muise groter mag wees in lae kussing digtheid gebiede. Hierdie skade het partykeer gelei tot die verbrokkeling van hele kussings. Omgewingsveranderlikes was belangrik vir die voorkoms van hierdie spesies. In besonder, 42.95 % en 24.82 % van die afwykings in die voorkoms van A. stolonifera en S. procumbens, onderskeidelik, is verduidelik deur omgewingsveranderlikes, vergeleke met 17.35 % vir A. magellanica. Verder, die medevoorkoms van A. magellanica saam met A. stolonifera is beduidend beinvloed deur omgewingsveranderlikes. Beduidende positiewe ruimtelike assosiasies tussen A. magellanica en A. stolonifera is gevind, terwyl die interaksies van beide spesies met S. procumbens was of ruimtelik nie-geassosieerd of lukraak. Uitheemse spesies hou ongetwyfeld ’n beduidende bedreiging in vir inheems plante op die eiland, en hierdie tesis bied insig in die interaksies van spesies, spesifiek plante – ’n benadering wat swak verteenwoordig was in die sub-Antarktiese gebied tot op hede.

The symbiotic specificity of Aspalathus capensis and A. carnosa in relation to their geographical distribution, was investigated by growing plants in soil and in tubes containing soil solutions plus nitrogen-free nutrient solutions. Soila were collected from three sites within their distribution and two from 90km outside. Both species formed nodules in all three soils from within their distribution and A. capensis in one from outside. A. carnosa did not survive in tube culture. The possible role of hostspecificity in the distribution of A. capensis and A. carnosa is discussed. A widespread invasive alien legume, Acacia saligna . was grown in the same soils and soil solutions. It formed nodules only in the three soils from within the distribution of Aspalathus capensis. The degree of nodulation varied between these soils. The possible importance of host-strain specificity in the invasive ability of alien legumes is discussed.

>Magister Scientiae - MSc<br>The Cape Floristic Region, situated at the southern tip of Africa, is one of the world’s most botanically diverse regions. The biodiversity of this region faces various types of threats, which can be divided into three main categories, namely increasing urbanisation, agriculture expansion, and the spread of invasive alien vegetation. It has been shown that botanically diverse areas are more prone to invasion by invasive alien plant (IAP) species. The Hawequa conservation area, in the south-western Cape, is particularly botanically diverse, such that it is very prone to aggressive invasion by IAP species. Therefore, conservation management of the Hawequa conservation area urgently need to map, prioritise and clear IAP species. Due to the topographical complexity of this mountainous area, it is not possible to map the distribution of IAP species throughout the protected area by conventional field methods. Remote sensing may be able to provide a suitable alternative for mapping. The aim of this research was to assess various image classification methods,using two types of high-resolution imagery (colour aerial photography and WorldView-2 satellite imagery), in order to map the distribution of IAP species, including small stands and individuals. Specifically, the study will focus on mapping Pinus and Acacia spp. in a study site of approximately 9 225ha in the Hawequa conservation rea. Supervised classification was performed using two different protocols, namely per-pixel and per-field. For the per-pixel classification Iterative Self-Organising Data Analyses Technique (ISODATA) was used, a method supported by ERDAS Imagine. The per-field (object-based) classification was done using fractal net evolution approach (FNEA), a method supported by eCognition. The per-pixel classification mapped the extent of Pinus and Acacia spp. in the study area as 1 205.8 ha (13%) and 80.1 ha (0.9%) respectively, and the perfield classification as 1 120.9 ha (12.1%) and 96.8 ha (1.1%) respectively. Accuracy assessments performed on the resulting thematic maps generated from these two classification methods had a kappa coefficient of 0.700 for the per-pixel classification and 0.408 for the per-field classification. Even though the overall extent of IAP species for each of these methods is similar, the reliability of the actual thematic maps is vastly different. These findings suggest that mapping IAP species (especially Pinus spp.) stands and individuals in highly diverse natural veld, the traditional per-pixel classification still proves to be the best method when using high-resolution images. In the case of Acacia spp., which often occurs along rivers, it is more difficult to distinguish them from the natural riverine vegetation. Using WorldView-2 satellite images for large areas can be very expensive (approximately R120 per km2 in 2011), but in comparison with the cost of mapping and the subsequent clearing, especially in inaccessible areas, it might be a worthwhile investment. Alternative image sources such as the high resolution digital colour infrared aerial photography must be considered as a good source for mapping IAP species in high altitude areas.

Invasive non-native species are believed to be one of the biggest threats to biodiversity. Until now biological invasions have been mainly studied from a biological perspective and much research has been undertaken to investigate species’ ecology and potential options for management. Comparatively little attention has been devoted to questions regarding the social construction of the issue. This is despite invasion biologists increasingly acknowledging the fundamental importance of human perceptions, beliefs, attitudes and values inherent in debates about invasive non-native species. This thesis employs a mix of methods from the social sciences to investigate the social construction of biological invasions. Research conducted here is based on the theory of social representations. Thus, taking a social scientific perspective, the thesis contributes to both the development of the theory and an identification of beliefs inherent in the debate on biological invasions and their relationship to people’s attitudes towards species and their management. Those species attributes that predominantly shape the debate – but yet appear to be under-researched – are identified. Based on the findings in this thesis I argue that invasion biology would benefit from a more explicit and transparent use of its concepts and terminology. This will have implications also for the communication with policy makers, conservation managers and the general public. Recommendations for future research are discussed along with limitations of the thesis.

L’invasione di specie aliene è considerata una delle cause più importanti di perdita della biodiversità. Le specie aliene vengono trasportate accidentalmente dall'uomo verso nuovi habitat, dove si insediano e si riproducono adattandosi alle nuove condizioni ambientali. Questo studio mira ad analizzare i principali fattori che influenzano la distribuzione spaziale di tre specie aliene, utilizzando transetti lineari paralleli alla costa e perpendicolari ai sentieri di accesso alla spiaggia. Sono stati inclusi fattori biotici (specie native), abiotici (morfologia dell’area) e antropici (vicinanza ai sentieri). I risultati dimostrano che la distribuzione spaziale delle specie target è influenzata, a seconda della specie, dalla distanza dai sentieri, dall'altezza delle avandune e dall'elevazione sul livello del mare, e dalla presenza di determinate forme di crescita di specie native che entrano in competizione con le aliene. Si suggerisce quindi di migliorare la protezione delle comunità endemiche, di rinforzare le barriere anti-calpestio e di continuare a promuovere le azioni di ripristino delle dune costiere.

Skogsmård (Martes martes) har länge varit Sveriges enda mårdart men 2018 gjordes det första fyndet av en annan art, stenmård (Martes foina), i nordöstra Skåne. Efter att detta fynd uppmärksammats fick Invasiva Arter på Svenska Jägareförbundet in uppgifter om ytterligare tre fynd från området. Syftet med studien var således att undersöka om stenmård är en etablerad art i nordöstra Skåne samt att undersöka om det finns släktskap mellan de funna individerna. Utifrån tidigare fyra fynd utfördes en fältstudie för att försöka samla in ytterligare fynd av stenmård i nordöstra Skåne, med hjälp av fällfångst. Fältstudien utfördes 1 november 2020–28 februari 2021 vilket motsvarade jakttiden för mård i Skåne. Inga nya fynd av stenmård gjordes under fältstudien, men sju fynd rapporterades in från allmänheten inom studieområdet. Således har totalt elva bekräftade fynd gjorts i Sverige åren 2014–2021, samtliga i nordöstra Skåne. Genetiska analyser utfördes av Naturhistoriska riksmuseet på fyra av kadavren för att undersöka eventuellt släktskap mellan dem, genom att jämföra individernas mitokondrie-DNA. Resultatet visade att de fyra individerna hade samma haplotyp och således härstammar från en gemensam anmoder. Utifrån åldersbestämning och tidpunkt för fällning kunde även bekräftas att de fyra individerna härstammar från minst två kullar och därmed att föryngring skett i området. Vi bedömer stenmård som en etablerad främmande art i nordöstra Skåne, eftersom den inom historisk tid inte ingått i Sveriges fauna och eftersom föryngring bekräftats. Vidare bedömdes att artens potential att klassas som invasiv bör utredas ytterligare utifrån ekologiska, ekosystemrelaterade och ekonomiska aspekter.<br>Pine marten (Martes martes) was the only marten species in Sweden until 2018 when the first stone marten (Martes foina) was found in the north-east of Scania. When this finding becamepublic, four more records from the area were reported to the Swedish association for hunting and wildlife management. In this study it was investigated if the stone marten is an established species in the north-east of Scania and if there is a genetic relationship between the found individuals. Based on the localization of previous records, a trapping field study was performed to see if further records of stone marten could be made in the north-east of Scania. The field study was executed between 1 November 2020-28 February 2021, which is within the hunting season of martens in the area. The field study did not result in any new records, but in seven new reports from the public within the area. In summary, a total of eleven stone marten records have been made in Sweden 2014-2021, all in the north-east of Scania. The Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm performed genetic analyses offour of the cadavers to investigate their genetic relationship by comparing mitochondrial DNA. Results showed that the four individuals had the same haplotype and therefore originate from one common ancestral female. Based on age determination and time of death it was also confirmed that the four individuals originate from at least two litters and that reproduction has occurred in the area. Since the stone marten historically is not part of theSwedish fauna and since local reproduction was confirmed, it was concluded that the species is an established alien species. It was also concluded that the species potential to be classified as invasive should be further investigated based on ecological, ecosystem related and economical aspects.

In this thesis, I have assessed and modelled invasion of alien plant species in the forest of the southeastern United States. There are over 380 recognized invasive plants in southeastern forests and grasslands with 53 ranked as high-to-medium risk to natural communities. I have focused on ten of these: Chinese lespedeza, tall fescue, Japanese honeysuckle, Chinese privet, autumn olive, princesstree, silktree, chinaberry, tree of heaven, tallowtree. Assessing them at differing scales, locally (Chapter 2 and 3), eco-regionally (Chapter 4 and 5) and regionally (Chapters 6 and 7), using field based measurements integrated with remotely sensed and digital datasets, and applying both parametric and non-parametric modelling approaches. Data from field based measurements as well as digitally available sources was evaluated, bringing together freely available data with time consuming, intensively collected data. Once models were developed application to assessing long term impacts was done by integrating potential climate change scenarios. At the local level Chinese lespedeza and Japanese Honeysuckle were the most prevalent, with models at the local level dominated by remotely sensed variables. At an eco-regional level Japanese honeysuckle was the most prevalent with models primarily dominated by environmental variables. At a regional level, where only trees were assessed, potential distributions of the invasive species ranged from 12 to 33 percent of the southeastern forests under current conditions with this dramatically increasing for chinaberry and tallowtree under most climate change scenarios, up as high as 66 percent of southeastern forest sites. In this thesis information on anthropogenic factors added some value to the models, however it was rarely dominant. Roads and land use (proportion of forest or distance to forest) were the most useful anthropogenic variables. In all models evaluated, only six times did any one anthropogenic variable represent more than 25 percent of the models, four of these were at the local scale. At the regional and eco-regional level, roads had a greater than 25 percent contribution to the silktree models, at a local level, distance to forest and distance roads contributed more than 25 percent to three of the species evaluated, sawtooth oak, Japanese honeysuckle and privet. Human activities have the most influence on invasion progression through dispersal (movement and introduction rate) and disturbance of the landscape (increased resource availability). Anthropogenic variables such as roads are likely to be a mechanism of spread, thus the more a model is driven by anthropogenic variables, the more likely the invasive plant is to be in the early stages of invasion process. Thus our results suggest that many of these species have moved through the first stages of invasion. Environmental characteristics play an important role in determining a site’s vulnerability to invasion. At an eco-region and regional scale, environmental characteristics dominated (>50%) all but one model (silktree at the regional scale). At the eco-region level elevation was the dominant variable, and at a regional level minimum temperature was the dominant variable. These have some correlation, with higher elevation often relating to lower temperatures, particularly at a smaller scale. This confirms the validity of matching the climate ranges of native species with the range of potential invasion, and the approach of integrating elevation, latitude and longitude to estimate potential distribution. It also suggests that climate change will influence the distribution and that variation in climate should be integrated into models. Two different modelling approaches, logistic regression and maximum entropy, were used throughout my thesis, and applied to the same data. Agreement between different modelling types adds strength to conclusions, while disagreement can assist in asking further questions. The inclusion in the models of similar variables with the same direction of relationships gives confidence to any inference about the importance of these variables. The geographical agreement between models adds confidence to the probability of occurrence in the area. Alternatively using the same model but different datasets can give you similar information. Overall for all models created by both logistic regression and MaxEnt, the logistic regression had slightly better omission rates and the MaxEnt model had better AUC’s. Logistic regression models also often predicted larger geographical areas of occurrences when the threshold of maximum sensitivity plus specificity was used, thus the lower omission rates is related to the less stringent model that predicts a larger area. The selection of appropriate data to answer the question was shown to be fundamental in Chapter 7. When data were used outside of the area of interest it generalized the models and increased the potential for invasion significantly. There was more value in the intensive surveyed data but this was less dramatic than in using the defined areas of interest to select the data for models.

Invasive alien plant species pose a serious threat to Canada's natural ecosystems. It is the thesis of this paper that sub-national laws are important tools in combatting such species that are naturalized and spreading within provincial and territorial boundaries. Weed control acts in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island and the plant health protection acts in New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador are a strong basis to combat invasive alien plant species. However, since these laws were enacted for weeds in agro-ecosystems, they are not up to the task of protecting natural ecosystems from invasive alien plant species. In some provinces and territories, there is a need to fill gaps in the law and ensure that it applies in a clear and uniform manner to all natural ecosystems. Numerous other revisions are recommended to make applicable provincial and territorial laws more effective.

Biological diversity is an essential prerequisite for life on earth and for the function of its ecosystems. Without biological diversity the ecosystems will eventually collapse, and it is thus necessary to maintain a healthy level of variation at ecological-, species- and genetic- level. Invasive alien species (IAS) are now recognized as the second highest threat to biological diversity. As a result, new legislation aiming to counteract the increasing issues with IAS are introduced e.g. in the EU. The purpose of this essay is to evaluate the function and importance of the precautionary principle regarding the control of IAS, using legal analysis. The legal analysis is complemented by an analysis of other scientific sources e.g. in order to describe biological diversity in general as well as the real and potential the ecosystem-consequences of the introduction of species. EU environmental law is based on the precautionary principle and so is thus the newly established IAS Regulation. The IAS Regulation requires an extensive riskassessment before a species will be encompassed by the regulation. The risk-assessment process does however not entirely correspond with the (strong version of the) precautionary principle, as actions in accordance with this principle requires an assumed risk, which must not necessarily be scientifically established. This results in a discrepancy between the legal definition and the actual definition of an IAS; species which have undergone the risk-assessment process can obtain the status of IAS (legally) whilst others, which has not yet been assessed or do not fulfil all criteria, do not have this status and are thus not covered by the legislation. There are 12 000 alien species within the EU, of which 1800 are considered invasive. However, only 49 different species are currently covered by the IAS-regulation. This cannot be considered to be in keeping with the (strong version of the) precautionary principle.<br>Biologisk mångfald är en förutsättning för liv på jorden och ekosystem behöver en variation av arter likväl som gener. Invasiva främmande arter (IAS) har erkänts som ett av de största hoten mot den biologiska mångfalden, vilket har resulterat i ny lagstiftning inom EU. Syftet med den här uppsatsen är att fastställa vilken roll försiktighetsprincipen spelar vid regler som omfattar IAS; i allmänhet och i enskilda fall. För att utreda rättsläget används en rättsdogmatisk metod som kompletteras med en analys av naturvetenskapligt material för att klargöra vilka faktiska effekter IAS har. Miljörätten inom EU baseras på försiktighetsprincipen och den nyligen (relativt) utfärdade IAS-förordningen baseras därefter på försiktighetsprincipen. Det måste dock utföras en riskbedömning innan arter omfattas av IAS-förordningens bestämmelser (och legalt definieras som IAS inom EU). Försiktighetsprincipen (en stark version) ska emellertid betyda att en antagen risk är tillräckligt för att åtgärder ska vidtas; genom riskbedömningen betyder det däremot att det handlar om en fastställd risk. Detta betyder även att den faktiska definitionen IAS och den legala är olik; en art kan uppfylla definitionen IAS i praktiken men inte legalt. Försiktighetsprincipen (en stark version) tillämpas därför på legalt definierade IAS inom EU medan de facto IAS inte åtnjuter samma grad av försiktighet.  EU har själva yttrat, i det första skälet i IAS-förordningen, att det existerar 12 000 främmande arter inom EU varav 1800 av dessa är invasiva; IAS-förordningen omfattar dock endast 49 av dessa arter.

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Our planet is in the midst of a biodiversity crisis, with factors such as land transformation, climate change, anthropomorphic disturbance and invasive species acting together to threaten biodiversity. In South Africa, with minimal natural wood resources, commercial forestry is one of the most abundant forms of landscape transformation. However, a third of the land inside many plantations has been set aside for conservation as unplanted remnant grassland patches (RGPs). These areas are subjected to an additional negative impact by invasive alien species, namely Rubus cuneifolius (American bramble), a weed that is particularly problematic in and around forestry plantations in South Africa. The grassland biome of South Africa is extremely diverse and is of vital importance for the ecosystem services it supplies. Despite this, the grassland biome is under threat as this is where much of South Africa’s forestry plantations are located. Driven by anthropomorphic disturbance, pollinators are in decline. Landscape transformation of natural areas for forestry plantations is likely to affect plant-pollinator interactions which will affect ecosystems and biodiversity. However, it is not known to what extent these ecosystems are affected. It is thought that the impact depends on the complexity of the ecosystem in question, and analyses at the network-level provide insights into the robustness of ecosystems in the face of biodiversity loss. Thus, this study evaluates the effect of natural habitat fragmentation and invasion of the alien species, R. cuneifolius, on flower visitation networks of South African grasslands. The study was conducted in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands within a commercial timber plantation and a neighbouring protected area (PA). Flower-visitor observations were carried out in uninvaded protected areas and RGPs and in protected areas and RGPs invaded by R. cuneifolius. I found that RGPs within commercial forestry plantations successfully decrease the negative effects of land transformation on the grasslands of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, and flower visitation network patterns are largely maintained in these habitat fragments. However, within RGPs, invasion by R. cuneifolius affected the composition and the interaction network structure of flower-visitor and plant communities. The fact that there are unplanted areas within commercial forestry plantations is positive for biodiversity conservation in South Africa. Research has indicated that these areas successfully aid in the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Due to the positive influence that RGPs have on conservation in fragmented and transformed landscapes, it is critical that these unplanted areas are retained. However, the effects of bramble invasion are more intense within RGPs than within protected areas, and therefore, it must be a priority to keep these areas undisturbed. R. cuneifolius has been found to have devastating effects on ecosystem function and network structure. It is also a category 1 invasive plant within South Africa, and its removal is required by law. Therefore, the removal of bramble must be a management priority.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Ons planeet is in die middel van 'n biodiversiteit krisis, met faktore soos grond transformasie, klimaatsverandering, antropomorfiese versteuring en indringerspesies wat gesamentlik werk om biodiversiteit te bedreig. Suid-Afrika, besit minimale houtbronne. Daarom is kommersiële bosbou een van die mees algemene vorme van landskap transformasie. Tog is 'n derde van die land binne baie plantasies opsy gesit vir bewaring as oorblywende grasveld kolle (OGKs). Hierdie gebiede word ongelukkig blootgestel aan die bykomende negatiewe impak van die uitheemse spesies, Rubus cuneifolius (Amerikaanse steekdoring), wat veral problematies is in en rondom bosbouplantasies. Die grasveldbioom van Suid-Afrika is baie divers en is van kardinale belang vir die ekosisteem dienste wat dit lewer. Blom-besoeker waarnemings was in BGs en OGKs sonder R. cuneifolius, en in BGs en OGKs met R. cuneifolius uitgevoer. Ek het gevind dat OGKs binne kommersiële bosbouplantasies suksesvol is om die negatiewe uitwerking van land transformasie te verminder, en blom-besoeking netwerk patrone grootliks gehandhaaf word in hierdie habitat fragmente. Egter, binne OGKs, het R. cuneifolius die samestelling en die interaksie netwerk struktuur van blom-besoekers en plant gemeenskappe negatief geraak. Die feit dat OGKs ongeplant gelaat word, is positief vir die bewaring van biodiversiteit in Suid- Afrika. Navorsing dui aan dat hierdie gebiede suksesvol is om te help met die bewaring van biodiversiteit en ekosisteemfunksionering. As gevolg van die positiewe invloed van OGKs op bewaring in gefragmenteerde en omskepte landskappe, is dit krities dat hierdie areas ongeplant bly. Prior to 1993, freshwater angling in South Africa had been governed by the respective nature conservation legislation of the four South African provinces, the four “independent homelands" and the six so-called Bantustans. In 1993 a South Africa with nine provinces was created, of which only Limpopo and Mpumalanga promulgated its own laws governing freshwater angling. From 2008 angling for listed threatened and protected freshwater fish species has been regulated by the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, supplemented by the Threatened or Protected Species Regulations. In addition, it is anticipated that the Alien and Invasive Species Regulations, which will regulate angling for listed alien and invasive freshwater fish, will be promulgated in the near future. The result is that freshwater angling is currently being governed by a plethora of pre-1993 provincial, homeland and Bantustan legislation, two post-1993 provincial acts, as well as post-1993 national legislation. In this dissertation the South African freshwater angling legislative framework was critically analysed. It was found that the multitude of fragmented and complex laws, created 15 “angling provinces” which leads to confusion amongst anglers and government officials alike. In the process legal certainty and reasonableness, cornerstones of a sound legal system, are being compromised, indigenous freshwater fish are not adequately protected and alien or invasive freshwater fish are not properly managed. In the light of the above, and after taking comments by anglers and enforcement officials into account, recommendations are made for an improved legislative framework for freshwater in South Africa. It is recommended that all freshwater fish species be managed and/or protected on a catchment basis, as opposed to the current provincial basis. This will ensure legal certainty and reasonableness and that all indigenous freshwater fish which are subject to the similar threats are protected adequately and uniformly.<br>Thesis (M. Thesis (MScFor)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Several studies have shown that stands of invasive alien plants in the natural forest environment can facilitate the rehabilitation and recovery of such forests and challenged the general and global perception that such invasive species threaten the biodiversity and functioning of natural vegetation systems. The aim of this study was to develop an understanding of the dynamics of the spread and establishment of natural forest species in a large stand of the invasive alien plant species Acacia mearnsii (Black wattle) along the Buffeljagsrivier, Western Cape, South Africa. Several patches of Moist forest, Dry forest and Riparian forest occur along the Buffeljagsrivier, above the Buffeljagsrivier dam. The stand of Black wattle consists of 90 ha for a distance of 3.12 km. The main objective was pursued through four specific objectives: (i) to map and assess the patterns in the distribution, size and species composition of the natural forest clusters within the Black wattle stand; (ii) to determine the relationship between natural forest clusters establishing within the Black wattle stand and the neighboring natural forest patches as potential seed sources for the developing forest clusters; (iii) to determine the subsequent spread of natural forest species from the developing forest clusters into the rest of the Black wattle stand; and (iv) to synthesize the information on the dynamics of the spread and establishment of natural forest species into the Black wattle stand as a basis for developing general guidelines for the conversion of invasive alien plant stands in the forest environment towards regrowing natural forest. In total, 329 clusters of natural forest species were GPS recorded and mapped (Arc-GIS) in three zones (Proximal, Intermediate and Distant in relation to the forest patches) within the Black wattle stand: 266 small clusters (one to three reproductively mature trees), 36 medium sized clusters (four to nine trees) and 27 large clusters (more than 10 trees). Large clusters were abundant in the zone close to the natural forest patches and the number of small clusters increased with increasing distance from the forest patches. A total of 28 species of 20 families were recorded. Natural forest species are therefore able to establish within a Black wattle stand. The relationship between natural forest clusters establishing within the Black wattle stand and the natural forest patches as potential seed sources was studied by sampling the stand composition along transects through the stands. A total of 55 rectangular plots (20 m x 10 m, 200 m2) were sampled across forest patches and forest clusters. Hierarchical clustering analysis, using number of stems of a species per plot, identified three main groups and 10 sub-groups. All the sampled forest clusters were included in four of the five Riparian forest sub-groups. Most Moist and Dry forest species were absent from the forest clusters. The three main forest types differed in their general characteristics and site conditions, and this was supported by the ordination analyses: aspect, slope and canopy closure. The developing forest clusters within the Black wattle stand related more to the Riparian forest in terms of similar very gentle south-westerly slope and mean stem diameter. This suggested Riparian forest to be the primary seed source of the establishing forest clusters within the Black wattle stand. However, the large-sized stems of common species were not significantly different between Riparian forest patches and forest clusters, suggesting that large-sized stems in the forest clusters could be part of remnant forest patches, which could act as local seed sources. Detailed evaluation of species importance values and stem diameter distributions showed that some important Moist and Dry forest species are present in the forest clusters. The conclusion was that every type of forest patch contributes to a greater or lesser degree to the development of forest clusters within the Black wattle stand. Seven large clusters were selected to sample the regeneration of natural forest species within 18 m from the forest cluster boundary. Two species lists were generated; one of species from adjacent natural forest patches, and another from 59 forest clusters of all sizes sampled throughout the wattle stand. The results indicated that (1) Mature trees of well-established forest clusters were the main seed sources for the cluster expansion in all directions; (2) Three different patterns were observed in terms of the distance of expansion of regeneration from the clusters: a decrease in regeneration with increasing distance from the cluster margin; increasing regeneration with increasing distance from the cluster; and no distinct pattern with a lack of regeneration of the dominant species of a forest cluster. The 40 species recorded within the Buffeljagsrivier site include a wide range of fruit and seed characteristics. Four main groups of woody species were identified, based on their presence/absence in forest patches and forest clusters. The presence/absence of most species can be explained in terms of their fruit/seed characteristics and dispersal mechanisms. The majority of recorded woody species were most likely dispersed by birds and mammal, particularly Rameron pigeons and baboons. In conclusion, a conceptual framework was developed to guide the rehabilitation of stands of light demanding invasive stands in the forest environment. Several topics for further research were identified.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Verskeie studies het gewys dat opstande van uitheemse indringerplante in die woudomgewing kan die rehabilitasie en herstel van sulke woude fasiliteer, en daag die algemene en globale persepsie uit dat sulke indringerplantspecies die biodiversiteit en funksionering van natuurlike plantegroeisisteme bedreig. Die doel van hierdie studie was om ‘n beter begrip te ontwikkel van die dinamika vir die verspreiding en vestiging van inheemse woudspesies binne ‘n omvangryke opstand van die uitheemse indringerplant, Acacia mearnsii (swartwattel), langs die Buffeljagsrivier, Wes-Kaap, Suid Afrika. Verskeie kolle (‘patches’) van Vogtige, Droë- en Oewerwoud kom langs die Buffeljagsrivier voor. Die ontwikkelende woudgroepies binne die swartwattelopstand was nouer verbonde met Oewerwoud in terme van soortglyke baie geleidelike suid-westelike helling en gemiddelde stamdeursneë. Dit veronderstel dat Oewerwoud is die primêre saadbron van die vestigende woudgroepies binne die swartwattelopstand. Baie inheemse woudspesies kom egter oor die verskillende groepe en sub-groepe voor, met goeie verjonging oor die gemeenskappe. Die stamdeursneë van goter stamme van algemene spesies was niebeduidend verskillend tussen die Oewerwoudkolle en die woudgroepies, en dit veronderstel dat die groter stamme in die woudgroepies kan deel wees van oorblywende woudkolle, wat as plaaslike saadbronne kan dien. Gedetaileerde ontleding van spesies belangrikheidswaardes en stamdeursneëklasverdelings het getoon dat sommige belangrike Vogtige en Droeëwoud spesies is wel teenwoordig in die woudgroepies. Die gevolgtrekking was dat elke tipe woudkol in a mindere of meerdere mate bydra tot die ontwikkeling van die woudgroepies binne die swartwattelopstand. Sewe groot woudgroepies is geselekteer om die woudverjonging binne 18 m vanaf die woudgroepierand te bemonster. Twee spesieslyste is saamgestel; een van spesies van die aangrensende woudkolle, en een van spesies van 59 woudgroepies van alle groottes wat deur die hele swartwattelopstand aangeteken is. Die resultate het aangetoon dat (1) volwasse bome van goed-gevestigde woudgroepies was die hoof saadbronne vir die uitbreiding van die woudgroepies in all rigtings; (2) drie verskillende patrone is waargeneem in terme van die afstand van uitbreiding van verjonging weg vanaf die woudgroepies: ‘n afname in verjonging met toenemende afstand vanaf die groepierand; toenemende verjonging met toenemende afstand vanaf die woudgroepie; en geen beduidende patroon met ‘n gebrek aan verjonging van die dominante spesies van die woudgroepie. Die 40 spesies wat binne die Buffeljagsrivierstudiegebied aangeteken is het ‘n wye reeks vrug- en saadeienskappe ingesluit. Vier hoofgroepe van houtagtige spesies is geïdentifiseer, gebaseer op hul aan- of afwesigheid in die woudgroepies and woudkolle: spesies algemeen in die woudkolle en teenwoordig in die woudgroepies; spesies spesifiek to bepaalde woudkolle en teenwoordig in die woudgroepies; spesies teenwoordig in die woudkolle maar afwesig van die woudgroepies; en spesies afwesig van die woudkolle maar teenwoordig in die woudgroepies. Die aan- of afwesigheid van die meeste spesies kan verduidelik word in terme van hul vrug/saadeienskappe en verspreidingsmeganismes. Die meerderheid van aangetekende houtagtige spesies was meeswaarskynlik deur voëls en soogdiere versprei, veral Geelbekbosduiwe en Bobbejane. Ten slotte, ‘n konsepsuele raamwerk is ontwikkel om die rehabilitasie van opstande van ligafhanklike indringerspesies in die woudomgewing te rig. Verskeie onderwerpe vir verdere navorsing is geïdentifiseer.<br>RESUME: Plusieurs études ont montré que les peuplements de plantes exotiques envahissantes dans le milieu de forêt naturelle peuvent favoriser la réhabilitation de ces forêts contestant par-là, la perception générale et globale que ces espèces envahissantes menacent la biodiversité et le fonctionnement des systèmes de végétation naturelle. L’objective de cet étude était de mieux comprendre le dynamisme d’établissement et de propagation dans une forêt naturelle des espèces forestières au sein d’un large peuplement de l'espèce de plantes exotiques envahissantes Acacia mearnsii (acacia noir) le long de Buffeljagsrivier, Western Cape, en Afrique du Sud afin d’élaborer des axes directives de réhabilitation relative aux recouvrements d’espèces invasive. La forêt de Buffeljagsrivier s’étale sur un gradient de petites parcelles de forêt allant de forêt sèche, humide et marécageux. Au milieu de ces parcelles de Buffeljagsrivier, on circonscrit un peuplement d’acacia noir estimé à 90 ha sur une distance de 3,12 km. L’objective principal s’est poursuit à travers quatre sous objectives à savoir: (i) cartographier et évaluer les formes d’ invasions dans la distribution, la taille et la composition des recouvrements des espèces de forêt naturelle à l’intérieur du recouvrement d’acacia noir servant comme preuve possible de l’existence et établissement des espèces de forêt naturelle sous un recouvrement d'une espèces invasive; (ii) de déterminer la relation entre les recouvrements de forêt naturelle s’établissant á l’intérieur du peuplement d’acacia noir et ceux de la forêt naturelle avoisinante humide, sèche et marécageuse pouvant être considéré comme sources potentiel de semences conduisant au développement des premiers recouvrement cités; (iii) de déterminer l’étalement subséquent des espèces de la forêt naturelle à partir des recouvrements d’ acacia noir se développant à l’intérieur du reste du peuplement de l’Acacia noir; (iv) Synthétiser les informations sur la dynamique de la propagation et l'établissement d'espèces forestières naturelles dans l’acacia noir comme une base pour l'élaboration des lignes directrices générales pour la conversion de peuplements de plantes exotiques envahissantes se trouvant dans l'environnement de la forêt vers des repousses des forêts naturelles. Au total, 329 recouvrements d'espèces forestières naturelles ont été GPS enregistrées et cartographiées (Arc -GIS) dans trois zones (Proximale, Intermédiaire et Eloignée par rapport aux parcelles de forêt avoisinantes) dans le peuplement de l'acacia noir: 266 petits recouvrements avaient un à trois arbres matures, 36 recouvrements de taille moyenne avaient quatre à neuf arbres matures et 27 larges recouvrements avaient plus de 10 arbres matures. La visualisation de la carte a révélé que les larges recouvrements de forêt mature étaient abondant dans la zone proche des parcelles de forêt naturelle avoisinantes et que de petits recouvrements de jeunes arbres de forêt naturelles croissaient en nombre à mesure que la distance depuis les parcelles de forêts naturelles adjacentes s’élargissait. Un total de 28 espèces appartenant à 20 familles a été répertorié. Deux familles, Rubiaceae suivit de Anacardiaceae ont dominé l’echantillon. Les espèces forestières naturelles sont donc en mesure de s’établir dans un peuplement d'acacia noir. L’échantillon qui a servi à l’évaluation des sources de semences pour le développement des recouvrements de forêt naturelle à travers l’investigation de la relation entre les recouvrements de forêt naturels qui s’établissent à l’intérieur du peuplement d’acacia noir et les parcelles de forêt avoisinantes humide, sèche et marécageuse était constitué de 55 placettes rectangulaires de 200m2 le long de layons à travers le site d’étude. Une analyse hiérarchique des recouvrements réalisée sur la composition des espèces de l’échantillon a révèle que la forêt marécageuse concentre les espèces les plus fréquentes des recouvrements de forêts, et que la majorité des espèces présentes sur les parcelles des forêts sèches et humides étaient absente dans l’ensemble des recouvrements des forêts de l’acaci noir. Les trois principaux types de forêts différaient dans leurs caractéristiques générales et les conditions du site, et cela a été appuyé par l’analyse d’ordinants à partir de trois facteurs environnementaux, la pente, l’angle d’inclinaison par rapport au soleil, et la fermeture de la canopée. Les recouvrements de foret en développement au sein de l'acacia noir se sont trouvés davantage liés à la forêt marécageuse en termes de pente plate orientée sud-ouest et en diamètre moyen des arbres. Ces résultats ont désigné la forêt marécageuse comme la première source potentielle de semences permettant l’établissement des recouvrements de forêt à l’intérieur des peuplements d’acacia noir. Cependant, les souches d’arbres de grande taille des espèces communes entre les parcelles de forêts marécageuses et les recouvrements de forêt dans l’acaci noir n'étaient pas significativement différents, suggérant ainsi que ces arbres de grande taille trouves dans les recouvrements de foret pourraient faire parties des parcelles de forêt subsistantes de la dernière turbulence. Elles pourraient constituer des sources locales de semences. Par ailleurs, une évaluation détaillée des valeurs d'importance des espèces et des distributions des diamètres des souches d’arbres a montré que certaines espèces importantes de forêts humides et sèches sont présentes dans les recouvrements de foret. Finalement l’on conclue que chaque type de parcelles de forêt contribue plus ou moins à l’établissement des recouvrements de forêt dans le peuplement de l'acacia noir. Sept grands recouvrements de foret ont été sélectionnés pour étudier la régénération des espèces forestières naturelles sur un rayon de 18 m depuis la limite du recouvrement de foret. Deux listes d'espèces ont été générées, l'une des espèces de parcelles de forêt naturelle adjacentes, et une autre venant des 59 recouvrements de foret, toutes tailles confondues le long de l'acacia noir. Les résultats ont indiqué que (1) Les recouvrements de forêts, lorsque bien matures et bien établies devenaient les principales sources de semences pour leur expansion sur toutes les directions; (2) Trois allures différentes ont été observées en fonction de la distance de l'expansion de la régénération autour des recouvrements: une diminution de la régénération avec l'augmentation de la distance; une croissance de la régénération avec une distance croissante depuis les revcouvrements de foret, et pas d’allure particulaire voire une absence de régénération de certaines especes pourtant dominant dans les recouvrements de foret. Les 40 espèces recensées sur le site deBuffeljagsrivier comprennent un large éventail de caractéristiques de fruits et de graines. Quatre principaux groupes d'espèces ligneuses ont été identifiées, en fonction de leur présence / absence dans des parcelles de forêt et les recouvrements de forêt. De façon générale, la présence / absence de la plupart des espèces a pu être expliquée en termes de caractéristiques de leur fruits/graines et les mécanismes de dispersion. La majorité des espèces ligneuses enregistrées sont susceptibles d’être dispersées par les oiseaux et les mammifères, en particulier les pigeons rameron et les babouins vues sur le terrain. En conclusion, un cadre conceptuel a été élaboré pour guider la réhabilitation de peuplements envahissants de lumière en milieu forestier. Plusieurs sujets pour des recherches plus poussées ont été identifiés.

With the current climate change projections and their ability to survive extreme environmental conditions, these species pose a huge threat to grazing resources, water availability and ecosystems in general. Routine monitoring and understanding their distribution and potential vulnerable areas is fundamental as it provides the requisite baseline information to guide clearing efforts and other related management and rehabilitation initiatives.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>A introdução de espécies em locais fora de sua distribuição natural é uma preocupação importante na conservação da biodiversidade. A espécie Callithrix aurita é endêmica das regiões de floresta de altitude da Mata Atlântica do Sudeste do Brasil. Os critérios mais relevantes que a enquadram como espécie ameaçada de extinção são: destruição do habitat, incapacidade de adaptação a florestas secundárias degradadas, declínio populacional, distribuição restrita e introdução de espécies exóticas invasoras. Estes critérios, aliados à evidente raridade, explicam a sua inclusão na Lista Oficial de Espécies da Fauna Brasileira Ameaçadas de Extinção. Os objetivos do trabalho são: estimar o tamanho populacional de C. aurita, C. penicillata e seus híbridos no Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos, avaliar a hibridação entre as espécies por caracteres morfológicos e laboratoriais, verificar o estado de saúde e confirmar a participação de C. aurita na paternidade dos animais capturados, propor um plano de erradicação e de controle de invasão de C. penicillata no Parque. Os tamanhos populacionais das duas espécies de primatas foram estimados através do método Distance Sampling. Um total de sete sagüis foi capturado com armadilhas de captura viva para a contenção física e química e posterior realização dos procedimentos. Para o hemograma, as dosagens bioquímicas e as análises genéticas, o sangue foi recolhido em um tubo de ensaio contendo anticoagulante e mantido em temperatura de refrigeração até o momento da manipulação / processamento das amostras. Callithrix aurita parece estar bem preservada apenas na área do Parque correspondente ao trecho situado no município de Petrópolis. As análises citogenéticas e moleculares dos híbridos são uma ferramenta útil para confirmar se há ou não hibridação, identificando as espécies envolvidas e verificando se há tendência nos retrocruzamentos. Pode-se sugerir que existe uma tendência à diferenciação das espécies e identificação de indivíduos híbridos pelo padrão hematológico e bioquímico, a ser confirmada com uma amostragem maior de animais da espécie C. aurita, preferencialmente da mesma localidade e nas mesmas condições. No caso de C. aurita, as principais recomendações para sua conservação incluem pesquisas para o registro de outras populações em áreas de distribuição livres de invasão, para que se possa avaliar as chances de recuperação populacional e sobrevivência da espécie. A criação de novas Unidades de Conservação deve ser estimulada, assim como estudos mais aprofundados sobre a espécie nos locais já conhecidos de ocorrência, além de um programa seguro de criação em cativeiro.<br>The introduction of species in places outside their natural distribution is an important concern in biodiversity conservation. Callithrix aurita is endemic in regions of high-altitude forests of the Atlantic forest of southeastern Brazil. The most relevant criteria of fitting as endangered species are: habitat destruction, inability to adapt to degraded secondary forests, population decline, restricted distribution and introduction of invasive alien species. These criteria, coupled with the apparent rarity, explain its inclusion on the Official List of Species of Brazilian Fauna Threatened with Extinction. The objectives are: to estimate the population size of C. aurita, C. penicillata and their hybrids in the Serra dos Órgãos National Park, assess hybridization between species by morphology and laboratory check the health status and confirm the involvement of C. aurita in the fatherhood of trapped animals, propose a plan for eradication and control of invasion of C. penicillata in the Park. The population sizes of the two primate species were estimated by the method "Distance Sampling". A total of seven marmosets were captured with live traps set for the chemical and physical restraint and subsequent completion of the procedures. For the haemogram, the biochemical and genetic analysis, blood was collected in a test tube containing anticoagulant and kept at refrigerator temperature until the moment of handling / processing of samples. Callithrix aurita appears to be well preserved only in the park area corresponding to the portion located in the city of Petrópolis. The cytogenetic and molecular analysis of hybrids are a useful tool to confirm whether or not hybridization, identifying the species involved and seeing if there is a tendency in the backcrosses. One may suggest that there is a tendency for species differentiation and identification of hybrid individuals by standard hematological and biochemical, to be confirmed with a larger sample of the species C. aurita, preferably from the same locality and under the same conditions. In the case of C. aurita, the main recommendations for its conservation research to include the registration of other populations in areas of distribution free of intrusion, so you can evaluate the chances of population recovery and species survival. The creation of new protected areas should be encouraged, as well as more detailed studies on the species already known sites of occurrence, and a safe program of captive breeding.

Alien invasive plants are of concern in the world because of their potential to spread into the natural environment. Invasion patterns observed in plant species can be attributed among other things to favourable environmental conditions. Understanding invasion dynamics of alien invasive plants can help in timely intervention initiatives. In Mpumalanga, Lilium formosanum (Liliaceae) appears to be an emerging plant invader and is spreading in the natural environment. The study investigated the invasion extent and predictor variables which could explain abundance patterns of L. formosanum in the invasive range in Mpumalanga province in South Africa and further predict regions of the world that could be climatically suitable. Lilium formosanum was surveyed along 11 major routes leading into the towns of Sabie and Graskop in Mpumalanga from a slow moving vehicle. A total of 241 kilometres was surveyed. Lilium formosanum was found to be invasive from the towns of Sabie and Graskop. Climatically suitable areas were predicted using DIVA-GIS and climate data was obtained from WORLDCLIM database while occurrence records were obtained from the Southern African Plant Invaders Atlas, Australia’s virtual herbarium and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. In conclusion, distance, altitude and route were found to have an influence on the abundance of L. formosanum in Mpumalanga Province. Harmonia axyridis is a ladybird native to Asia, but introduced widely as a biocontrol agent. It is invasive and detrimental to native species in North America, which meant its arrival in Britain was met with concern. Establishment was seen as an opportunity to track the spread of an invasive alien species (IAS) whilst also monitoring impacts on native species. The aims of this thesis were to examine the responses of native British ladybirds to the arrival of H. axyridis, to establish the effect of the IAS on native ladybirds when compared to other drivers, and to investigate the possible facilitation of the H. axyridis invasion by natural enemy release. Modelling ladybird distributions with life-history and resource-use traits found that species predatory on a wide range of prey families had larger range sizes than those which ate fewer prey types. This suggests that the wide diet breadth of the IAS is likely to have played a critical role in the species’ rapid spread. Dietary niche overlap between H. axyridis and native ladybirds showed positive correlation with declines of native ladybirds. This indicates that the IAS is playing an important role, but the significance of urbanisation suggests habitat destruction is also significant. Abundance of H. axyridis was influenced by habitat type and aphid abundance, but not by the native ladybird community, suggesting the spread of the IAS will not be slowed by biotic resistance. Harmonia axyridis is attacked by native parasitoids, but at a much lower rate than is the native Coccinella septempunctata, in line with natural-enemy release theory. There was no evidence of attack rate increasing with time since arrival in an area. Overall, H. axyridis is an extremely successful IAS, with detrimental effects on native ladybirds which are likely to continue.

The naturalisation and subsequent spread of non-indigenous plant species (NIPS) is a major problem for most regions of the world. Managing plant invasions requires greater understanding of factors that determine initial naturalisation and distribution of wild NIPS. By the year 2000, 2252 NIPS were recorded as wild (1773 fully naturalised and 479 casual) in New Zealand. From published literature and electronic herbaria records, I recorded year of discovery of wild populations, and regional distribution of these wild NIPS. I also recorded species related attributes hypothesised to affect naturalisation and/or distribution, including global trade, human activities, native range and biological data; and regional attributes hypothesised to affect distribution, including human population densities, land use/cover, and environmental data. I used interval-censored time-to-event analyses to estimate year of naturalisation from discovery records, then analysed the importance of historical, human activity, biogeographical and biological attributes in determining patterns of naturalisation. Typically, NIPS that naturalised earlier were herbaceous, utilitarian species that were also accidentally introduced and/or distributed, with a wide native range that included Eurasia, naturalised elsewhere, with a native congener in New Zealand. In the year 2000, 28% of wild NIPS occupied only one region, 18% occupied two regions, decreasing incrementally to 2.5 % for nine regions, but with 13.5% occupying all ten regions. I used generalised linear models (GLMs) with binomial distribution to determine predictors of whether a wild NIPS occupied ten regions or not, and GLMs with Poisson distribution for wild NIPS occupying 0 – 9 regions. As expected, the dominant effect was that species discovered earlier occupied more regions. Utilitarian wild NIPS that were also accidentally introduced and/or distributed, and wild NIPS with a native congener tended to be more widely distributed, but results for other attributes varied between datasets. Although numbers of wild NIPS recorded in regions of New Zealand were sometimes similar, composition of wild NIPS was often very different. I used nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) to determine dissimilarity in composition between regions. Then, after reducing correlation between predictor variables using principal components analyses (PCAs), I tested the importance of regional variables in determining the regional composition of wild NIPS using metaMDS. The density of human populations best explained the dissimilarity in composition, but temperature gradients and water availability gradients were also important. In the year 2000 more than 1100 (60%) of the 1773 fully naturalised NIPS in mainland New Zealand had each been recorded in Northland/Auckland and Canterbury, and at the other end of the scale, Southland and Westland each had fewer than 500 (30%). I used GLMs to analyse the importance of people and environment in determining the numbers of wild NIPS in each region. Because I conducted multiple tests on the same dataset I used sequential Bonferroni procedures to adjust the critical P-value. Only human population density was important in explaining the numbers of NIPS in the regions. Overall, humans were the dominant drivers in determining the patterns of naturalisation and spread, although environment helps determine the composition of NIPS in regions. Incorporating human associated factors into studies of wild NIPS helps improve the understanding of the stages in the naturalisation and spread process.

There are many factors that have been proposed to contribute to plant invasiveness in nonnative ecosystems. Traits of invading species are one of them. It has been proposed that successful species at a certain invasion stage share particular traits, which could be used to predict the behaviour of potentially invasive plants at the respective stage. Three main stages of invasion are distinguished: introduction, naturalization, and invasion. I conducted a stageand trait-based analysis of available data for the invasion of New Zealand by the flora of southern Africa. Using 3076 southern African native vascular plant species introduced into New Zealand, generalised linear mixed model analysis was conducted to assess association of several species traits with the three invasion stages. The results showed that plant traits were significantly associated with introduction but fewer traits were associated with naturalization or invasion, suggesting that introduction can be predicted better using plant traits. It has been also hypothesized that species may become invasive in non-native ecosystems because they are removed from the regulatory effects of coevolved natural enemies (Enemy Release hypothesis). A detailed field study of the succulent plant Cotyledon orbiculata var. orbiculata L. (Crassulaceae) was conducted in the non-native New Zealand and native Namibian habitats to compare the extent of damage by herbivores and pathogens. C. orbiculata is a southern African species that is currently thriving in New Zealand in areas seemingly beyond the climatic conditions in its native range (occurring in higher rainfall areas in New Zealand than are represented in its native range). As hypothesised, C. orbiculata was less damaged by herbivores in New Zealand but, contrary to expectation, more infected by pathogens. Consequently, the plant was overall not any less damaged by natural enemies in the non-native habitat than in its native habitat, although the fitness impacts of the enemy damage in the native and invaded ranges were not assessed. The results suggest that climatic conditions may counteract enemy release, especially in situations where pathogens are more prevalent in areas of higher rainfall and humidity. To forecast plant invasions, it is concluded that species traits offer some potential, particularly at the early stage of invasion. Predicting which introduced plants will become weeds is more difficult. Enemy release may explain some invasions, but climatic factors may offset the predictability of release from natural enemies.

The world, in recent decades, has witnessed an incalculable surge in global “wicked” policy problems that have long-term, and most often irreversible, impacts, not least terrorism, climate change, biodiversity losses and desertification. Wicked problems are wicked because there is no single epistemological system that can adequately coordinate policy action for addressing them. Literature abounds with international case studies of opposition to national institutions that are designed to put into effect global and regional policies for resolving wicked problems. This raises questions about what constitutes reasonable institutions, how such institutions can be designed and why societies sometimes fail to develop such institutions despite the obvious need for them. As a point of entry into these issues, the thesis adapted and extended the Northean (2007, 2012) macro meta-theoretic framework for studying the violence-development relationship, which focuses on the role of political and economic competition in the emergence of ‘right’ institutions that promote development, while containing violence. The Northean framework conceptualises two mutually exclusive social orders – the limited access order and the open access order – which provide the socio-cultural context for the evolution of specific institutions. The macro meta-theoretic framework was transformed into a micro metatheoretic framework in such a way that the limited access order and the open access order co-existed in the evolution of specific institutions. This reconceptualisation built on Bromley’s (2004, 2006) two realms of public policy: the realm of reasons (legislative-judicial system) and the realm of rules (administrative system) as well as the feminist concept of epistemic violence, which broadened the concept of violence from being exclusively physical to including the sociocognitive. The feminist concept of epistemic oppression logically fitted into, and became a new sub-category of, Commons’ (1899, 1924, 1934) theories of sovereignty and negotiational psychology. The innovations showed that either of these realms can be a limited access order, while the other can be an open access order or both can be open access orders or both can be limited access orders. The conceptual innovations were then used as an interpretive scheme in analysing the evolution of the South African invasive alien species regulatory reforms under the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act of 2004, using a case study of the trout sector, which was the most opposed to the reforms. There was a general perception among socioeconomic sectors that utilise invasive alien species that the regulatory reform processes for the governance of such species had institutionally isolated the sectors. Because of this perception, the regulatory reform process was contested, and implementation of the Fifth Chapter of the Act, which deals with the governance of invasive alien species, was delayed for nearly a decade. The thesis evaluated whether institutional isolation existed and how and why it came to be since it has implications for the reasonableness of emerging regulatory institutions, economic performance of sectors and efficient allocation of fiscal resources in institutional design processes. A mixed methods methodology was used, which included data analysis techniques such as semiosis, exploratory factor analysis, econometric estimation and document analysis. Policy documents, an online survey and key informant interviews comprised the data. The findings suggested six dimensions of institutional change that a theory of institutional change might have to address: the origin and continuity of pecuniary institutions; selfreinforcing mechanisms of the limited access policymaking order; succession and disbandment of the limited access policymaking order; exclusivity of negotiations in institutional design; tiers of institutional isolation; and the role of administrative discontinuities. Findings suggested that institutional isolation existed in the regulatory process, manifesting in three forms: administrative isolation, epistemological isolation and sectoral isolation. Administrative isolation was the most complex of the three in that it also involved a less obvious process of institutional isolation in the form of administrative redefinition of opportunity sets that were already legislatively redefined. The mechanisms of institutional isolation through which administrative isolation was sustained were administrative financing of research and careerism. The two mechanisms created a revolving door-type scenario through which invasion biologists supplied the administrative agency with candidates for senior (decision making) positions and the administrative agency, in turn, demanded specific types of knowledge over which the same epistemic community had a monopoly. The revolving door-type scenario was found to ideologically and physically entrench invasion biologists into the regulatory community. The consequence of the entrenchment was institutional hegemony, which manifested itself through the mechanism of epistemic violence insofar as the invasion biologists became the epistemic arbiters about what kinds of ideas and institutions really mattered in the governance of invasive alien species. Econometric estimates suggested that the extent to which an emerging institution is perceived to be reasonable by regulated sectors depends on the extent to which the institution is designed in a participatory and inclusive manner (that is, using integrative knowledge systems), the extent to which the designers used credible evidence and contextualised international evidence as well as the extent to which the emergent biodiversity governance institution was anthropocentric. However, findings suggested that the South African regulatory reform process fell short on all these four dimensions of reasonable institutions, which is characteristic of institutional design process shaped by hegemonic social imaginaries, resulting in institutional isolation. Emerging from the findings are several theoretical insights. Bush’s (1987) concept of institutional spaces under the Veblenian Dichotomy was extended, the result of which was identification of two stable institutional equilibria – one ceremonial and another instrumental. The ceremonial equilibrium was a typical limited access policymaking order and was responsible for the historical and present emergence of regressive institutions. Findings also suggested that the entrenched invasion biologists ceremonially encapsulated the knowledge fund that had been accumulated since the 1980s, which could have facilitated the consensual design of regulatory institutions for invasive alien species without protracted controversy. Findings suggested that a limited access policymaking order could only be disbanded by the intervention of an external sovereign agent (in this case the office of the state president) since the administrative agency, and the epistemic community that advised it, adopted the solutions that were empirically tested and proposed in the 1980s only after the intervention of the external sovereign agent. The instrumental equilibrium repealed the contested prisoner’s dilemma that was characteristic of the policy process and turned it into an assurance policy game by facilitating the identification of common interests. This finding logically links the study to a recent theoretical development in institutional theory – Ordonomics – which focuses on the causality between ideas and institutions. The findings imply that it is possible to design reasonable institutions as long as integrative (transdisciplinary) knowledge systems, including the non-scientific knowledge of the resource users, are incorporated. Integrative knowledge systems facilitate semantic innovations, which create social DNA, but epistemic violence destroys social DNA. They also imply that reliance on unidisciplinary knowledge systems in institutional design induces a large and inefficient transaction cost burden of public policy on the fiscus and private agents alike because of the inevitability of controversy, especially for wicked policy problems.

The invasive potential of Myoporum laetum, a tree recently introduced into the southwestern Cape, South Africa, was evaluated, by comparing various aspects of its seed biology with those of another bird-dispersed alien, Acacia cyclops which is a successful invader in this region. M. laetum has higher annual seed production, but lower soil-stored seed banks than A. cyclops. Both experience high seed predation, especially under parent canopies. M. laetum has a more persistant seed store and is able to germinate and establish in shade. Germination of untreated A. cyclops seeds was 23.3% and this increased to 47.4% after mild heat treatment. Untreated M. laetum seeds were completely dormant, but 3.3% germinated after acid treatment. The high seed production, bird dispersal, persistant seed banks and ability to establish in shade, suggest that M. laetum could become invasive in thickets, such as existing acacia stands.

Thesis (MScConsEcol (Conservation Ecology and Entomology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Riparian ecosystems of the Mediterranean south-western Cape region are projected to experience significant decreases in streamflow due to climate change and increased demands for water associated with human demographic trends and increasing living standards. Aggravating this problem are woody invasive alien plants, such as Acacia mearnsii, whose impacts, including those on catchment water yields, have justified extensive eradication programmes such as Working for Water (WfW). WfW has been highly successful in managing invasive alien species in some areas, while at the same time enhancing the quality of life of poor South Africans. Unfortunately, the managers of these eradication initiatives often experience a lack of information on the species- and site-specific ecological properties that may aid in prioritising sites more prone to invasion, essentially inhibiting accurate management output. Knowledge, such as that associated with the possible future distribution of invasive species in a changing environment, may help to optimise eradication initiatives. I therefore determined whether woody plants portray different physiological (vulnerability to cavitation) and wood anatomical traits (wood density, vessel resistance to implosion, vessel lumen and wall diameters) across three prominent riparian zones in the south-western Cape that each differ in streamflow quantity – to gain a mechanistic understanding of how woody species, especially invasive species, adapt their hydraulic strategy across this proxy for water availability. Using factorial ANOVA’s, to distinguish any differences in plant physiological and wood anatomical responses to water availability within and between species, showed Acacia mearnsii having consistently higher drought-tolerance (lower P50 values and denser wood) compared to native species under reduced water availability. These results supported the significant variation in drought-tolerance strategies that exist within and between taxonomically different species across different environments. Water availability thus has a strong selective effect on functional traits of species; however, minimum water potentials were more useful in describing in situ hydrological conditions than streamflow. Additionally, a non-causal relationship between wood anatomical traits and drought-induced cavitation was observed. Therefore, using only wood anatomical measurements to assess drought-tolerance of species might not be accurate across all species. This mechanistic approach to assess the invasive potential of species under projected drier conditions has great practical value. Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Invasive alien species are widely considered to be the second most significant threat to biodiversity globally following direct habitat destruction. The invasion of riparian systems worldwide by alien plants has contributed to profound changes in biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In South Africa, river banks and river beds are amongst the most severely invaded landscapes, with the most damaging invaders, especially in the Fynbos Biome, being trees and shrubs of the Australian genera Acacia and Eucalyptus. Although large-scale management operations are underway to clear invasive trees and restore ecosystems, little is known regarding opportunities and constraints of native species recovery after alien clearing. The core aim of this thesis is to consider whether key aspects of two widely cited restoration models (successional and alternative-state models) are useful for guiding effective management of severely-invaded riparian vegetation. As a study system, I used the Berg River in the Western Cape, South Africa which is severely impacted by invasive trees, especially Eucalyptus camaldulensis. By linking the studies of constraints for restoration and opportunities for native species recovery, the aim was to provide new possibilities for restoration in riparian zones. The thesis starts by examining constraints to restoration following alien invasion, in particular allelopathy which is one of the factors that exacerbate the impacts of Eucalyptus invasion and inhibit recovery of natural vegetation after clearing. I further assess opportunities for both passive (based on the successional model) and active restoration (based on the alternative-state model) following different strategies for removing invasive trees. The aim is to determine the effectiveness of the different models for sustainable, goal-directed management. Finally, I investigate soil-related properties namely water repellency, soil moisture and infiltration that benefit from alien clearing and subsequent recovery of native vegetation. Work on allelopathy as a restoration constrain showed that the presence of E. camaldulensis along the Berg River negatively affects the recovery of native species. Eucalyptus camaldulensis is allelopathic and induces soil water repellency. I recommend the removal of E. camaldulensis from riparian systems as this has the potential to restore soils to a non-allelopathic and non-repellent state that can pave way for native vegetation recovery. Native vegetation recovery showed mixed results. Restoration based on the successional model was generally efficient, whereas restoration based on tenets of the alternative-state model was inefficient mainly due to the several constraints active restoration faced. Native species recovery was successful on both completely cleared and thinned sites that were treated four years ago. Cover of native trees and shrubs was higher in both completely cleared and thinned sites compared to invaded sites, indicating that both methods promote indigenous vegetation recovery and set the ecosystem on a trajectory towards recovery. To improve recovery through thinning, I propose a new four-stage process to guide management in ensuring good recovery of key native species. Numerous challenges associated with active restoration following fell & stack burning and fell & removal were observed on sites that were treated one year ago. Germination of introduced native species was low in both fell & removal and fell & stack burning sites. Secondary invasion of alien herbs and graminoids, dry summer conditions and low seed germination hindered early native species establishment and recovery. Therefore, for active restoration to achieve its goals, effective recruitment and propagation strategies need to be established. Recruitment of native species was non-existent in the sites that were not seeded; this is attributed to the dominance of alien herbaceous species and graminoids and the depletion of native species in the soil seed bank. Reduction of water repellency of soils after removal of the invasive trees is important as it has the potential to affect the success of native vegetation recovery. On sites where native vegetation was recovering well, soil water repellency ranged from moderately repellent in thinned sites to non-repellent in completely cleared sites. Therefore, successful native species recovery has the potential to improve soil-related ecosystem functions, which will possibly help towards restoring indigenous vegetation. I conclude that the invasive alien tree E. camaldulensis negatively affects the native riparian ecosystem and that strategies to remove the species are needed. Recovery of native vegetation composition, structure and ecosystem function depends on the degree of ecosystem degradation and remaining ecosystem resilience. Besides having clear and effective restoration goals, restoration efforts should also develop realistic solutions to overcome numerous challenges and constraints, before any restoration plan is implemented. Successfully restored riparian ecosystems have potential to increase river flow and may lead to increased availability of water to agriculture, recreation, conservation and for domestic use, resulting in significant water security in South Africa. Both the successional model and the alternative-state model emphasize the need to identify restoration constraints. This study identified allelopathy as an important constrain for restoration and recommends measures to address it so as to facilitate restoration. Recovery based on the successional model was more effective than recovery based on the alternative-state model, which faced several constraints. Models of alternative-states incorporate system thresholds and feedbacks that might explain why the degraded system faced recovery challenges and remained resilient to restoration.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Naas habitatverlies word indringer spesies as die grootste bedreiging vir biodiversiteit beskou. Die indringing van riviersisteme wêreldwyd deur uitheemse plante dra by tot groot veranderinge in die biodiversiteit en ekosisteem funksie. In Suid-Afrika, veral in die Fynbos Bioom, is rivieroewers en -beddings van die landskappe wat die meeste ingedring word, meestal deur skadelike indringers soos bome en struike van Australiese genera soos bv. Acacia en Eucalyptus. Alhoewel grootskaalse bestuursoperasies besig is om die indringers te verwyder en ekosisteme te herstel, is min bekend omtrent die geleenthede en beperkinge vir die herstel van inheemse spesies na die verwydering van indringers. Die hoofdoel van hierdie tesis is om die nut te bepaal van die sleutel faktore van twee wyd aangehaalde restorasie modelle (suksessie en alternatiewe-toestand modelle) om die effektiewe bestuur van hewig ingedringde oewers te lei. Die Berg Rivier in die Wes Kaap, Suid-Afrika, is gebruik as studie area. Die Berg Rivier is hewig geimpakteer deur indringers, veral deur Eucalyptus camaldulensis. Die doel was om nuwe geleenthede vir restorasie in rivier areas te voorsien, deur die studies oor beperkinge vir restorasie en geleenthede vir inheemse spesie herstel te verbind. Hierdie tesis begin deur die beperkinge van restorasie na indringing te ondersoek, veral allelopatie wat een van die faktore is wat die impakte van Eucalyptus indringing verhoog en die herstel van natuurlike plantegroei na verwydering van indringer inhibeer. Verder bepaal ek die geleenthede vir beide passiewe (gebaseer op die suksessie model) en aktiewe restorasie (gebaseer op die alternatiewe-toestand model) wat volg op verskillende strategieë van verwydering van indringer bome. Die doel is om die effektiwiteit van die verskillende modelle vir volhoubare, doel georiënteerde bestuur te bepaal. Laastens het ek die grond verwante eienskappe ondersoek naamlik, water terugdrywing, grondvog en infiltrasie wat voordeel trek uit indringer verwydering en die daaropvolgende herstel van inheemse plantegroei. Resultate van allelopatie as ʼn restorasie beperking het getoon dat die teenwoordigheid van E. camaldulensis langs die Berg Rivier die herstel van inheemse spesies negatief beïnvloed. Eucalyptus camaldulensis is allelopaties en gee aanleiding tot grondwater terugdrywing. Ek beveel aan die verwydering van E. camaldulensis vanuit rivier sisteme omdat dit die potensiaal het om grond na nie-allelopatiese en nie-terugdrywende toestand te herstel wat die weg kan baan vir die herstel van inheemse plante groei. Die herstel van inheemse plantegroei het gemengde resultate gewys. Restorasie gebaseer op die suksessie model was oor die algemeen meer doelmatig, teenoor restorasie gebaseer op die idee van ʼn alternatiewe-toestand model, hoofsaaklik as gevolg van verskeie beperkinge wat aktiewe restorasie in die gesig staar. Inheemse spesie herstel was suksesvol op beide die totaal indringer verwyderde en uitgedunde areas, wat vier jaar vantevore behandel is. Dekking van inheemse bome en struike was hoër in beide heeltemal skoongemaakte en uitgedunde areas wanneer die vergelyk word met ingedringde areas. Dit dui daarop dat beide metodes inheemse plantegroei herstel promoveer en die ekosisteem op ʼn baan na herstel plaas. Om herstel deur uitdunning te verbeter stel ek ʼn vier-stadium proses voor om bestuurders te lei vir goeie herstel van sleutel inheemse spesies. Verskeie uitdagings geassosieer met aktiewe restorasie wat volg op val-en-stapel brand en val-en-verwyder is geobserveer in areas wat ʼn jaar van te vore behandel is. Ontkieming van aangeplante inheemse spesies se sade was laag in beide die val-en-verwyder en die val-en-stapel brand areas. Sekondêre indringing van uitheemse kruie en graminoiede, droë somers toestande en lae saad ontkieming hinder die vroeë inheemse spesie vestiging en herstel. Dus, vir aktiewe restorasie om sy doel te bereik moet effektiewe werwing en verspreidings strategieë in plek wees. Daar was geen werwing van inheemse spesies in die areas wat nie gesaai was nie. Dit kan toegeskryf word in die dominansie van uitheemse kruie spesies and graminoiede en die uitputting van inheemse spesies in die grond saadbank. Vermindering van water terugdrywing van grond ná verwydering van indringer bome is belangrik aangesien dit die potensiaal het om die sukses van inheemse plantegroei herstel te affekteer. Die areas waar inheemse plantegroei goed herstel het, het grondwater terugdrywing gevarieer van gemiddeld afstootlik in die uitgedunde areas na nie-afstootlik in die heeltemal skoongemaakte areas. Dus, suksesvolle inheemse spesie herstel het die potensiaal om die grondverwante ekosisteem funksies te verbeter, wat moontlik sal bydra tot die herstel van inheemse plantegroei. Ek kom tot die gevolgtrekking dat die indringer boom E. camaldulensis die inheemse rivier ekosisteem negatief affekteer en dat strategieë om hierdie spesie te verwyder nodig is. Herstel van inheemse plantegroei samestelling, struktuur en ekosisteem funksie hang af van die graad van ekosisteem verval en die oorblywende ekosisteem weerstandigheid. Behalwe die verwyderings en effektiewe restorerings doelwitte, moet restorasie pogings ook realistiese oplossings vir die oorkombaarheid van verskeie uitdagings en beperkinge ontwikkel voor enige restorasie plan geïmplementeer kan word. Suksesvolle herstel van rivier ekosisteme het die potensiaal vir verhoogde rivier vloei en mag moontlik lei tot ʼn verhoogde beskikbaarheid van water vir landbou, ontspanning, natuurbewaring en vir huishoudelike gebruik, en kan dus ʼn beduidende bydrae kan lewer tot water sekuriteit in Suid Afrika. Beide die suksessie model en die alternatiewe-toestand model beklemtoon die noodsaaklikheid om restorasie beperkinge te identifiseer. Hierdie studie identifiseer allelopatie as ʼn belangrike beperking tot restorasie en maak aanbevelings om dit aan te spreek en om restorasie te fasiliteer. Herstel gebaseer op die suksessie model was meer effektief as herstel gebaseer op die alternatiewe-toestand model wat verskeie beperkings in die gesig staar. Die alternatiewe-toestand modelle inkorporeer sisteemdrumpels en terugvoer wat moontlik kan verduidelik waarom gedegradeerde sisteme herstel uitdagings getoon het en weerstandig teenoor restorasie gebly het.

Invasiva främmande arter är ett av de största hoten mot biologisk mångfald samt att de medför stora ekonomiska kostnader. Kommunerna spelar en viktig roll gällande tillsyn och bekämpning av invasiva främmande arter då de ofta är fastighetsägare och ansvarar för stora arealer. Med ett varmare klimat kan många arter som varit ett problem i varmare länder och i södra delarna av Sverige bli ett problem även på nordligare breddgrader. Det kan därför vara viktigt att kommunerna har ett väl fungerande arbete med etablerade arter och en beredskapsplan mot de arter som kan komma att bli ett problem i framtiden.  Syftet med denna studie var att identifiera vilka invasiva främmande arter som förekom i Värmlands län, samt vilka potentiella problemarter som skulle kunna etablera sig med ett förändrat klimat. Studiens avsikt var även att undersöka kommunernas arbete med de invasiva främmande arter som var etablerade på kommunal mark samt identifiera hinder för agerande mot dessa. För kartläggning av artförekomst i Värmland användes data från SLU ArtDatabankens Artportal. För att undersöka vilka arter som kunde bli ett problem i Värmland med ett varmare klimat användes också Artportalen för att identifiera artförekomst i de södra delarna av Sverige (Skåne). Data mellan åren 2016–2021 analyserades och visualiserades i kartor. Värmlands arbete med arterna undersöktes genom en semistrukturerad intervju med naturvårdshandläggare på länsstyrelsen samt att enkäter sändes ut till samtliga kommuner.   Resultatet visade att av de arter som var med på EU:s förordning fanns förekomster av sex arter i Värmland. Utöver arterna på förordningen fanns andra problemarter som även dessa räknades som invasiva. Enligt data i artportalen hade Skåne, som historiskt sett haft en varmare medeltemperatur, en större förekomst av invasiva arter. Ett varmare klimat skulle kunna gynna etablering av dessa arter även i Värmland, dessutom skulle spridningsintervallen på redan etablerade arter kunna öka.  Merparten av kommunerna hade dock inget förebyggande arbete mot potentiella problemarter. Undersökningen gav intrycket att arbetet är på uppgång men att det fortfarande fanns en utvecklingspotential. Det fanns ett behov för samverkan mellan kommunerna och tydligare och frekvent information till allmänheten. Det fanns även ett behov för fler resurser.<br>Invasive alien species are one of the biggest threats to biodiversity and they entail large economic costs. Since 2015, there is an EU regulation on the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species. The municipalities' work has a central role in the control of invasive species as they are often property owners and responsible for large areas. With a warmer climate, many species that have been a problem in warmer countries and in the southern parts of Sweden can become a problem even in more northern latitudes. It may therefore be important that the municipalities have a well-functioning work with established species and a contingency plan against the species that may become a problem in the future. The purpose of this study was to identify which invasive alien species occurred in Värmland County and which potential problem species that could establish with a changing climate. The purpose of the study was also to examine the municipalities' work with the invasive alien species that were established and to identify obstacles to action against them. Data from SLU ArtDatabanken's Art Portal were used to map species occurrence in Värmland. To investigate which species could be a problem with a warmer climate, the Species Portal was also used to identify species occurrences in the southern parts of Sweden (Skåne). Data between the years 2016–2021 were analyzed and visualized in maps. Värmland's work with the species was investigated through a semi-structured interview with nature conservation officers at the County Administrative Board and questionnaires were sent out to all municipalities. The results showed that of the species that were included in the EU regulation, there were occurrences of six species. In addition to the species in the regulation, there were other problem species that were also considered invasive. According to data in the species portal, Skåne, which had a warmer average temperature, had a greater incidence of invasive species. A warmer climate could favour the establishment of these species also in Värmland. Most of the municipalities, however, had no preventive work against potential problem species. The survey gave the impression that the work has started but that there was still a development potential. There was a need for collaboration between the municipalities and more frequent information to the public. There was also a need for more resources.

O comércio de espécies selvagens tem crescido bastante ao longo das últimas décadas. Atualmente é considerado o quarto maior tráfico ilegal no mundo, logo seguido da transação de drogas, de armas e de humanos. Estima-se que o comércio de espécies selvagens pode ultrapassar os 12 milhões de euros por ano na UE. Abrange tanto as plantas como os animais vivos; mas, nestes últimos, incluem-se também os seus derivados, tais como sejam as peles, os ossos, alimento, entre outros. O uso das espécies selvagens é bastante vastos, as espécies são utilizadas para alimentação, uso medicinal, investigação científica, comércio de peles, alimentação e o mais comum é para animais de estimação. As espécies exóticas muitas vezes tornam-se espécies exóticas invasoras, começam a ser um perigo para a biodiversidade e para as espécies nativas. O processo de invasão apresenta-se por quatro fases: dispersão ou transporte, estabelecimento, naturalização e por fim dispersão geográfica e/ou invasão. Vários são os mecanismos para combater as espécies exóticas invasoras, sendo que o mecanismo mais radical a erradicação de espécimes. Em Lisboa, estão descritas três espécies exóticas invasoras: a tartaruga da Florida Trachemys scripta, a tartaruga de Nelson Pseudemys nelsoni e a tartaruga corcunda do Mississipi Graptemys pseudogeographica; ABSTRACT: The wildlife trade is growing fast over the last decades. It is now considered the fourth largest illegal trade in the world, followed by the drugs, weapons and humans. It is estimated that trade with species can exceed 12 million € per year in the EU. This trade comprises plants or live animals; but also is derivatives, such as skins, bones, food, and others. The use of wildlife is diverse, can be for food, medical, scientific research, trade of skins, but the most common is for pets. Alien species can become invasive alien species and so they become a threat to biodiversity and for native species. The process of invasion has four phases: dispersion or transport, establishment, naturalization and geographic dispersion and/or invasion. There are several mechanisms to combat such invasive alien species: the most radical mechanism is eradication of specimens. In Lisbon, are described three invasive alien species: the red-eared slider turtle Trachemys Florida, the Florida red-bellied turtle Pseudemys nelsoni and the false map turtle Graptemys psedogeographica.

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Invasive alien plant species have devastating effects on the environments that they invade. Australian Acacias, a group of plants that has been planted globally for a range of uses, but has escape plantation areas and became invasive in many countries, are particularly problematic. Acacia mearnsii is one of these invasive alien plant species and in South Africa it is also an important forestry species. It is currently the fifth most widespread invasive alien plant in South Africa, only restricted by the very arid Karoo, thus it is important to assess the different habitats that it enters. The Afromontane forest complex in South Africa is highly fragmented and is one of the most threatened Biomes in the country. The widespread forest margin tree Virgilia divaricata occurs within these forest margins. It is ecologically similar to A. mearnsii as these two species share many characteristics (nodulating legumes, forest pioneer species, fast growing and fire adapted). These species occur sympatrically within invaded forest margins and within these sites, there is a potential for biological exchanges of associated pests and pathogens in the form of arthropods and fungal species. We hypothesize that these two species have different interactions with their pests and pathogens in accordance with the Enemy Release Hypothesis (ERH) and the Biotic Resistance Hypothesis (BRH), respectively. We first compared arthropod associates between these two tree species and found that they share many arthropod species. The native tree did, however, have much higher abundances of herbivores and overall arthropod associates than the invasive tree species, which supports the predictions of the ERH. The distribution of these two species also had an effect on their arthropod assemblages. We assessed their ophiostomatoid fungal associates and herbivore loads and then determined how these pests and pathogens were influenced by environmental conditions along a water gradient. We also compared the effect of plant nutrient content of the two tree species on pest and pathogen loads. A. mearnsii was unaffected by water limitation along this gradient, while δ12C/ δ13C analyses showed that V. divaricata trees experienced drought within drier sites. V. divaricata also had higher herbivore loads in drier sites. A. mearnsii had higher herbivore loads on nutrient deficient trees and higher disease development in trees with sufficient nutrient levels. Comparisons of the nutrient economies of the two legume trees showed that they had similar leaf nutrient contents and resorption efficiencies, but they differed in the use of Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF). The native tree utilized BNF more than the invasive. We also tested the physiological effects of a native fungal species on the two tree species. We found the infection elicited more response from the invasive, while the native plant was almost non-responsive. Both plants had significantly longer lesions on infected seedlings than on control plants after inoculation with this pathogen. This difference in response offers a measure of support to the BRH, as the invasive may be more vulnerable to infection. The importance of using related, ecologically similar species in the assessment of the impacts of invasive alien plants is highlighted here. This may provide more information on the actual ecological interaction between native and invasive species within invaded ranges. Forest margins are very vulnerable and dynamic habitats. The influx of a new species into this habitat in the form of an invasive alien plant may therefore have much negative effects. We found support for the exchange of pest and pathogens where these two tree species co-occur. The two host species were very similar in their nutrient economies, creating a potential for competition for similar resources between A. mearnsii and V. divaricata. The environment had an influence on how these plants responded to pest and pathogens and this may be important under the predicted scenario of future climate change.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Uitheemse indringer plant spesies het vernietigende effekte op die omgewings waarbinne hulle indring. Australiese Acacias, ‗n groep plante wat reg oor die wêreld aangeplant is vir ‗n reeks gebruike, maar wat uit plantasie areas ontsnap het en indringers geword het in baie lande, is besonder problematies. Acacia mearnsii is een van hierdie indringer uitheemse plant spesies, en in Suid Afrika is ook ‗n belangrike bosbou spesie. Dit is tans die vyfde mees wydverspreide uitheemse indringer plant in Suid Afrika, en word slegs beperk deur die baie droë Karoo, so dit is belangrik om die verskillende habitatte wat dit binnedring te ondersoek. Woudrandte, the grense van die Afromontane woudkompleks in Suid Afrika, is hoogs gefragmenteerd en is dus een van die mees bedreigde Biome in die land. Die wydverspreide woudrand boom Virgilia divaricata kom in hierdie woudrandte voor. Ons stel die hipotese dat hierdie twee spesies verkillende interaksies met hulle peste en patogene het, in ooreenstemming met die Vyand-Vrystellingshipotese (VVH) en die Biologiese-Weerstandshipotese (BWH), onderskeidelik. Ons het eers die geleedpotige assosieasie tussen hierdie twee boom spesies vergelyk en het bevind dat hulle baie geleedpotige spesies deel. Die inheemse boom het egter baie hoër getalle herbivore en algehele geleedpotige-assosiasies gehad as die indringer boom spesie, wat die voorspellings van die VVH ondersteun. Die verspreiding van hierdie twee spesies het ook ‗n effek gehad op hulle geleedpotige samestellings. Ons het ook hulle geassosieerde ophiostomatiede fungus assosiate en hulle herbivoor ladings bestudeer, en het bepaal hoe hierdie peste en patogene deur omgewingstoestande beinvloed is langs ‗n water gradient. Ons het ook die effek van hierdie peste en patogene op die voedingstof-inhoud van hierdie twee spesies vergelyk. A. meansii is nie geaffekteer deur waterbeperkings langs hierdie gradient nie, terwyl δ12C/ δ13C analises aangedui het dat V. divaricata bome droogte stres in droër lokaliteite ervaar het. V. divaricata het ook hoër herbivoorladings gehad in die droër lokaliteite. A. meanrsii het hoër herbivoorladings gehad op voedingstof-beperkte bome, en daar was verhoogde siekte-ontwikkeling in bome met genoegsame voiding. Vergelykings van die voedingstof-ekonomië van die twee peulplant bome het aangedui dat hulle eenderse blaarvoedingstof-inhoude en resorpsie effektiwiteite het, maar het verskil in die gebruik van Biologiese Stikstof Fiksasie (BSF). Die inheemse boom het meer van BSF gebruik gemaak as die indringer. Ons het ook die fisiologiese effekte van ‗n inheemse fungus spesie op die twee boomspesies getoets. Ons het bevind dat infeksie ‗n sterker reaksie in die indringer ontlok het, terwyl die inheemse plant feitlik glad nie op infeksie gereageer het nie. Beide plante het beduidend langer wondmerke in geinfekteerde saailinge ontwikkel as in kontrole plante na innokulasie met die patogeen. Hierdie verskil in reaksie verleen ‗n mate van ondersteuning aan die BWH, aangesien die indringer meer vatbaar mag wees teen infeksie. Die belang daarvan om verwante, ekologies soortgelyke spesies te gebruik in die bepaling van die effekte van uitheemse indringer spesies word hier beklemtoon. Dit mag meer inligting verskaf oor die werklike ekologiese interaksie tussen inheemse en indringer spesies binne verspreidings wat binnegedring is. Woudrandte is baie weerlose en dinamiese habitatte. Die invoer van nuwe spesies in hierdie habitat in die vorm van ‗n uitheemse indringer plant mag daarom baie negatiewe effekte hê. Ons het ondersteuning gevind vir die uitruiling van peste en patogene waar hierdie twee spesies saam voorkom. Hierdie spesies was baie eenders in terme van hulle voedingstof-ekonomië, wat die potensiaal skep vir kompetisie tussen A. mearnsii en V. divaricata. Die omgewing het ‗n effek gehad op hoe hierdie plante gereageer het op peste en patogene, en dit mag belangrik wees onder die huidig voorspelde senarios van toekomstige klimaatsverandering.

Ett annat sätt att se på befintligt råmaterial, som en del i en cirkulär ekonomi. Rapporten diskuterar resurs och värde med intention att minska användandet av nya material och byta ut dessa till mer hållbara lösningar.Genom faktainsamling och en materialdriven designprocess utforskas Parkslide som material, vilket resulterar i materialprover som öppnar upp möjligheterna för framtida marknader.<br>Japanese knotweed is an Invasive Alien plant that is widely spread, at the expense of nearby vegetation, which has a negative impact on the biodiversity. By examining the possibilities to use Japanese Knotweed and its characteristics, as something valuable and useful, it can result in opportunities for a sustainable development in the society. We can change the way we view the plant and possibly make it a part of a circular economy. This work will discuss resource and value with the intention to reduce the use of new materials and switch those to a more sustainable solution.Through literature studies, interviews, survey and a Material Driven Design process I will explore Japanese Knotweed as a material, which results in material samples and discussion. This opens up the possibilities for future markets.

Produzir mapas detalhados com ferramentas associadas em um Sistema de Informações Geográficas – SIG pode auxiliar e diminuir o tempo de trabalho para mapear e apontar a tomada de decisões com vistas a elaboração de estudos, dinâmicas de ocorrência e políticas de controle de espécies invasoras. O objetivo principal do estudo é mapear a distribuição espacial de L. lucidum na região serrana no sul do Bioma Mata Atlântica, em diferentes escalas espaciais. De forma específica pretende-se (i) avaliar mapeamentos de manchas de invasão obtidas a partir de imagens multiespectrais dos satélites Geoeye (pixel de 0,25m2) e Landsat 5 TM (pixel de 900m2), quanto à acurácia da classificação, área total invadida, tamanho e número de manchas; e se aplicável, (ii) determinar a ocorrência potencial da espécie para uma área mais ampla, a partir de imagens Landsat 5 TM. Aplicou-se técnicas de classificação supervisionada para o uso do solo e para a ocorrência da espécie invasora determinou-se o NDVI, a classificação dos pixels pelo método Spectral Angle Mapper (S.A.M) e a acurácia pelo índice kappa. A classificação com imagem do Geoeye apresentou uma ocorrência de 239.60 ha e um índice kappa de 0.86, onde a maior área ocupada correspondeu a manchas entre 1 e 100m². Já o uso de imagens do Landsat 5TM apresentou na sua classificação final uma área de 219.06ha de ocorrência da espécie e um índice kappa de 0.74, onde a maior área ocupada correspondeu a manchas maiores de 15.000m². Para aferir a acurácia da imagem de baixa resolução espacial utilizou-se os pontos de controle da imagem do Geoeye, obtendo um índice kappa de 0.38. Pelo modelo acurado gerou-se um modelo de ocorrência potencial para uma região de 341km², obtendo uma área de 16.379ha da espécie e uma ocorrência de 9.74% do L. lucidum em relação as áreas florestais. A espécie possui ocorrência confirmada e representativa na área e em curto espaço de tempo poderá se tornar uma ameaça ao ecossistema florestal da Serra Gaúcha, alcançando percentuais de invasão que não possibilitem sua erradicação. Devido a ocorrência em ampla escala do L. lucidum como invasor, o controle só pode ser possível em fases iniciais do processo, sendo economicamente restritiva e ecologicamente inviável em etapas avançadas.<br>Set techniques to accurately map the occurrence of invasive species facilitates the understanding of its occurrence, dominance and preferred habitats. Produce detailed maps with associated tools in a Geographic Information System - GIS can help and reduce working time to map and point out the decision-making with a view to preparing studies, dynamics of occurrence and governance control of invasive species. The main objective of the study is to map the spatial distribution of L. lucidum in the mountainous region in the south of the Atlantic Forest biome, at different spatial scales. Specifically intended to (i) evaluate mappings invasion spots obtained from multispectral satellite images of Geoeye (pixel 0,25m²) and Landsat 5 TM (pixel 900m²), as to the accuracy of classification, total área invaded , size and number of spots; and if applicable, (ii) determining the potential for occurrence in a wider area, from 5 Landsat TM images. It applied supervised classification techniques for land use and the occurrence of invasive species determined the NDVI, the classification of pixels by Spectral Angle Mapper Method (SAM) and the accuracy of the kappa index. The classification Geoeye image showed an occurrence of 239.60 ha and a kappa index of 0.86, where the highest occupied area corresponded to spots between 1 and 100 m². Already using Landsat 5TM images presented in their final classification of an área 219.06ha of occurrence of the species, and a kappa index of 0.74, where the highest occupied area corresponding to larger spots 15.000m². To assess the accuracy of the low spatial resolution image used to the control points of Geoeye image, getting a kappa index 0.38. By accurate model was generated a potential occurrence model for a region of 341km², obtaining an area of 16.379ha the species and occurrence of 9.74% of L. lucidum over forest areas. The species has confirmed and representative occurrence in the area and in short time can become a threat to the forest ecosystem of Serra Gaucha, reaching invasion percentages which do not lend its eradication. Due to occur on a large scale of L. lucidum as an intruder, the control can only be possible in the early stages of the process, being economically and ecologically feasible restrictive in advanced stages.
