Abstract:
This extended study of one of the critical campaigns of World War I sheds light on vital strategic consequences for both sides. Published during the centennial of the events it considers, this book provides a comprehensive examination of one of the most interesting and influential campaigns of World War I, a campaign that was the apex of mobile warfare at the time. By the late summer of 1915, the Russian threat to Austria-Hungary had been eliminated by the Central Powers. That allowed Erich von Falkenhayn, head of the German supreme command, to turn his attention to his next strategic target—the conquest of Serbia—which was imperative to opening a land route to the Ottoman Empire. Until that task was accomplished, matters on the all-important Western Front would have to wait. This first major study of the invasion of Serbia covers events primarily from the viewpoint of the Central Powers, which played the most pivotal role in the campaign. The book considers the impact of factors as diverse as diplomacy, command, coalition warfare, mountain warfare, military technology, and the harsh environment in which the campaign was conducted. Readers will come away with an understanding of and appreciation for the importance of the Serbian campaign as it affected the outcome of the war and the ultimate destruction of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Mclean, Deckle. Privacy and Its Invasion. Praeger, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216001362.

Full text
Abstract:
Privacy. We want lots of it for ourselves. We love to invade the privacy of others. We are willing to trade it for benefits of all kinds, including credit, social services, and friendship. Why is this? Where should we draw a line? How should we handle our ambivalence in an era in which privacy often appears to be under official attack? This book explores such questions by rooting into scarce literature to explain why privacy is such a strong need, reviewing a variety of methods for guarding privacy, and concluding that at one time America was a very fortunate place privacy-wise. McLean examines problem areas in which privacy invasions play, or have played, large roles. Rape and sexual offenses are analyzed; so, too, is news reporting that touches private matters and race relations. Privacy and its Invasion also has a point to make: that privacy, despite its dark side, is an idea whose time has come, an ancient need that now requires explicit endorsement and protection as a value. A thought-provoking examination of something we have come to regard as a basic right, but a right under assault, this book is for all concerned with contemporary social and legal issues, civil liberties, and communications.

Taylor, Abbie, Nada Soudy, and Susan Martin. The Egyptian ‘Invasion’ of Kuwait. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190608873.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
By virtue of their omnipresence and lived investment in the country, Egyptians are both heavily reliant upon and intrinsic to Kuwait, its citizenry, and its various forms of social, political, and economic production. In this chapter, drawing upon extensive interviews with Egyptians and Kuwaitis, we explore three main questions: How has Egyptian migration to Kuwait changed over time? In what ways do Egyptian migrants and their Kuwaiti hosts perceive and interact with one another against official ideology, and within the time limits placed on migrants’ lives in Kuwait? And what, if any, are the implications of political and socioeconomic instability in Egypt on the wellbeing and migration trajectories of Egyptian migrants in Kuwait? Implicit throughout the chapter is the framing paradox identified by Neha Vora in her study of the Indian diaspora in Dubai: namely, the ways in which Egyptians as impossible citizens suspended in a state of permanent temporariness experience, narrate and negotiate their existence in Kuwait. Lastly, we demonstrate ways in which Egyptians can and do navigate a degree of social and economic mobility in Kuwait, although these negotiations rarely succeed in extending or eroding the prejudices or existential time limits placed on their lives in Kuwait.

Full text
Abstract:
The Fear of Invasion presents a new interpretation of British preparation for war before 1914. It argues that protecting the British Isles from invasion was the foundation upon which all other plans for the defence of the Empire were built up and that defensive concerns played a crucial role in shaping British preparations for war before 1914. The requirements of home defence were a crucial factor in the distribution of military strength across the Empire, and determined the relative priorities of the Army and Navy—both of which played an important role in preventing an invasion. As politicians were reluctant to prepare for precipitant British military action against other Great Powers, home defence became the means by which the government contributed to an ill-defined British ‘grand’ strategy by dictating the relative roles and responsibilities of the two services. The Royal Navy formed the backbone of British defensive preparations, yet after 1905 the Admiralty came to view the threat of a German invasion of the British Isles as far more credible than is commonly realized. As the Army became more closely associated with operations in Europe, the Navy thus devoted an ever-greater amount of time and effort to safeguarding the vulnerable British coast with ‘very insidious’ consequences: the role of the Fleet became overly defensive and reactive. This book explains how and why this came to pass, presenting a new perspective on British strategy in 1914 and questioning the role of government in making strategy more broadly.

Abstract:
Between 1966 and 1980, the War History Office of the National Defense College of Japan (now the Center for Military History of the National Institute for Defense Studies) published the 102-volume Senshi Sōsho (War History Series). The present book completes the trilogy of English translations of the sections in the Senshi Sōsho series on the Japanese operations against the former Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). The first volume (The Invasion of the Dutch East Indies, 2015) details the army operations, the second volume (The Operations of the Navy in the Dutch East Indies and the Bay of Bengal, 2018) the navy operations, and this third volume the army air force operations. The three volumes provide an unparalleled insight into the Japanese campaign to capture Southeast Asia and the oil fields in the Indonesian archipelago in what was at that time the largest transoceanic landing operation in the military history of the world. It was also the first time in history that air power was employed with devastating effect over such enormous distances, posing complex technical and logistical problems.

Winkler, Emily A. Invasion, Explanation, and Responsibility in Anglo-Saxon England. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198812388.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 3 begins by providing an overview of the key events of eleventh-century England, to serve as a guide for comparing and evaluating both contemporary and twelfth-century retellings of this narrative. It then goes back in time to examine Anglo-Saxon models for leadership from the time of Gildas (writing in post-Roman Britain) and Bede, up to the last versions of ASC written in the eleventh century. The chapter discusses sources from the reign of King Alfred, in which we find early glimmers of the tensions among the responsibilities of kings which occur in a more pronounced fashion in the twelfth century. In considering the immediate reaction to each eleventh-century conquest, it explains that historians in late eleventh-century England saw themselves, the people, and their kings as victims of conquest, and that historians at the time explained the disasters of invasion by employing traditional models of collective sin and providential will.

Schlaepfer, Martin A. Introduced species are not always the enemy of conservation. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808978.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter tells the story of how a few biologists came to question whether non-native species were being objectively evaluated with regard to their threat to biodiversity and ecosystems. The chapter examines the criteria that are commonly used to evaluate whether species should be labeled as invasive aliens, and suggests there is merit in assessing both the positive and negative contributions of species. Because invasion biology is a heavily value-laden field in which logic does not always reign, there is resistance to considering the benefits that might accrue from non-native species. Now is the time to think hard about which species are likely to cause clear harm so that management interventions can be aimed where they are most needed, and limited resources are not squandered on relatively harmless ecological invasions.

Perone, James E. Mods, Rockers, and the Music of the British Invasion. Praeger, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400687051.

Full text
Abstract:
Musical floodgates were opened after the Beatles' first appearance onThe Ed Sullivan Showon February 9, 1964. Suddenly, the U.S. record charts, radio, and television were overrun with British rock and pop musicians. Although this British Invasion was the first exposure many Americans had to popular music from the United Kingdom, British pop — and more specifically British rock and roll — had been developing since the middle of the 1950s. Author James Perone here chronicles the development of British rock, from the 1950s imitators of Elvis Presley and other American rockabilly artists, to the new blends of rockabilly, R&B, Motown, and electric blues that defined the British Invasion as we recognize it today. Die-hard fans of the Beatles, the Who, and the Kinks will all want a copy, as will anyone interested in the 1960s more generally. May 1964 saw major gang-style battles break out in British resort communities between the Mods and the Rockers. The tensions between the two groups had been developing for several years, with each group claiming their own sense of culture and style. The Mods wore designer clothing, rode Vespa motor scooters, and shared an affinity for black American soul music, while the Rockers favored powerful motorcycles, greased-back hair, and 1950s American rock and roll. It was within this context that the sounds of the British Invasion developed. Mods, Rockers, and the Music of the British Invasionchronicles the development of British rock through the iconic artists who inspired the movement, as well as through the bands who later found incredible success overseas. In addition to analyzing the music in the context of the British youth culture of the early 1960s, Perone analyzes the reasons that the British bands came to so thoroughly dominate the record charts and airwaves in the United States. The contributions of Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, Tommy Steele, the Tornados, Tony Sheridan, Blues Incorporated, and others to the development of British rock and roll are examined, as are the contributions and commercial and artistic impact of major British Invasion artists such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Dave Clark Five, the Yardbirds, Manfred Mann, the Who, the Kinks, and others. After investigating these groups and their influences upon one another, Perone concludes by examining the commercial and stylistic impact British rock musicians had on the American music of the time.
