Abstract:
The Enemy Release Hypothesis proposes that introduced species often achieve larger individual sizes and greater population abundance in their introduced range because they have escaped their natural enemies - predators and parasites - that regulate populations in their native range. The main objective of this study is to test the Enemy Release Hypothesis (ERH) by investigating the identity, prevalence and intensity of parasites in two marine species introduced to New Zealand - the recently introduced but spatially restricted Asian portunid crab, Charybdis japonica, and the longer-established Asian nesting mussel, Musculista senhousia. Host choice of a native generalist parasite presented with the non-native and native mussels, and prey selection by a native predator presented with these bivalves will be examined. This is the first study of its kind in New Zealand. The parasite fauna of the only established New Zealand population of C. japonica (Waitemata Harbour, Auckland), was compared to that from (a) a population of C. japonica from its native region (Japan) and (b) to multiple populations of the native New Zealand crab Ovalipes catharus, a native New Zealand portunid. Results showed the introduced crab harboured only one species of endoparasite (a nematode), and two types of melanised lesions. Neither the parasite nor the lesions were present in the native crab populations. The native crab was host to only one parasite species, which occurred at very low prevalence, and was present in only one of the six populations examined from throughout New Zealand. Carapace width in the introduced crab was no larger than that reported in literature from its native are, but was larger than carapace widths of the Japanese sample. M. senhousia was examined from five sites within New Zealand. Parasites in M. senhousia were compared with a sympatric native bivalve, Austrovenus stutchburyi, two native mytilids, (Perna canaliculus and Xenostrobus pulex) and with samples of M. senhousia from Italy and the USA where it is introduced, and Japan where it is native. Two native generalist parasites, the pea crab Pinnotheres novaezelandiae, and a copepod, were found within M. senhousia in New Zealand, but only at low prevalence. A greater array of organisms was associated with the native bivalves. No parasites were recovered from any of the overseas samples of M. senhousia, including the Japanese samples. This may be caused by the preservation medium used, but could be a true reflection of the parasite fauna in these populations. The site where the two native parasites were exploiting M. senhousia was the only site sampled where two native mussels, P. canaliculus and X. pulex, also occurred. Consequently, effects of these two generalist parasites on the three mussel species were examined. In P. canaliculus, presence of native pea crabs was associated with lower tissue dry weight and greater shell depth. Shell width and depth were both greater in the presence of copepods. However, the prevalence of pea crabs and copepods was much lower in M. senhousia compared to the two native mussels, indicating some release from the effects of these parasites for the non-native species. Experimental choice tests showed that the pea crab, P. novaezelandiae, does not actively select M. senhousia as a host, preferring the larger native mussel, P. canaliculus. Rates of infection of M. senhousia are, therefore, likely to remain low in natural habitats where there are large numbers of native hosts. In addition, a generalist predator, the crab O. catharus, showed no preference when foraging on the three mussel species under experimental conditions. Thus, some predation pressure may be exerted on M. senhousia by this native crab in the natural environment. Investigation of multiple populations of both native and non-native species has shown large variation in parasite prevalence and intensity among populations of each species. After examining C. japonica and the comparable native O. catharus, evidence to support the ERH was found to be weak. As the native crab was relatively free of parasites, it seems unlikely that parasite infection is important within native populations and therefore, the success of C. japonica is unlikely to be caused by comparatively greater freedom from parasites (a central tenet of the ERH). There was also no evidence for host-switching by native parasites into the introduced C. japonica population. In contrast, native parasites were present at very low prevalence in the non-native mussel M. senhousia. Length of time since introduction can be an important factor in host switching between native and introduced hosts, but unless prevalence of these parasites is high, the introduced species still escapes from enemies that could control a population. Therefore every non-native species needs to be examined using multiple populations to investigate variation in parasite fauna, prevalence and intensity, as the same species, if introduced numerous times, could potentially show contrasting results for the ERH unless multiple populations are examined.

Abstract:
I investigated parasitic infection and immunocompetence in populations of introduced bird species in New Zealand (NZ) that had experienced a range of population bottlenecks (11-808 individuals), and compared these parameters to non-bottlenecked conspecifics in the United Kingdom (UK). My aims were two-fold; firstly to assess if population bottlenecks are linked to increased parasite loads and/or decreased immunocompetence, and secondly, to assess at what severity of bottleneck these effects become evident. I found that ectoparasite load (chewing lice, Order: Phthiraptera, Sub-Orders: Amblycera & Ischnocera) was significantly higher in the more severely bottlenecked species in NZ than in the UK, whilst this difference became non-significant at more moderate bottlenecks. The difference was mainly driven by the Sub-Order Amblycera. The prevalence of avian malaria (Plasmodium spp.) was significantly negatively correlated to bottleneck size within NZ, after controlling for body mass. Total leucocyte and differential lymphocyte counts were elevated in the less bottlenecked species that were infected with malaria, whilst the populations at the more severe end of the bottleneck spectrum did not exhibit such a response. Furthermore, heterophil/lymphocyte (HL) ratio (a parameter used as an indicator of environmental and/or immunological stress), was significantly raised in the more bottlenecked species when compared to their UK counterparts, and this difference was correlated with the size of the bottleneck. Immunocompetence was further assessed by the experimental challenge of six introduced birds species in NZ with the mitogen phytohaemagglutinin (PHA). Immune response to PHA was significantly correlated to bottleneck size, but in the opposite direction to that predicted; immune response was greater in the more bottlenecked species. However, this may be an indication of increased investment in immunity, due to increased parasite and pathogen pressure or differential investment in varying components of the immune system. Finally, the immune response to PHA was compared in nestlings of two species that had experienced very different bottlenecks (70 vs. 653). After controlling for ectoparasitic infestation, I found no difference between the two species; however, this finding may be confounded by interspecific competition. Overall, my findings suggest that more severe population bottlenecks may result in increased susceptibility to pathogens, and impact on the immune system. This has a number of implications for the development of conservation protocols, and future avenues of research are suggested.

Abstract:
Humankind has redistributed a large number of species outside their native geographic ranges. Although the majority of introduction attempts fail to establish populations, the cumulative negative effect of successful non-native species has been and will continue to be large. Historical records of land bird introductions provide one of the richest sources of data for testing hypotheses regarding the factors that affect the successful establishment of non-native populations. However, despite comprehensive summaries of global avian introductions dating back two decades only very recent studies have examined the successful establishment of non-native bird species worldwide. It is clear that a non-random pattern exists in the types of land bird species that have been chosen by humans to be introduced outside their native range. Out of the 44 avian families from which species have been chosen for introduction almost 70% of introduction attempts have been from just five families (Phasianidae, Passeridae, Fringillidae, Columbidae, Psittacidae). Notably, these families include game species, insectivorous song birds, and species from the pet trade. It has been hypothesised that the fate of introduced species may be determined in part by heritable characteristics that are shared by closely related taxa. In my analyses, I have used current comparative methods to demonstrate that intrinsic eco-physiological characteristics are significant predictors of the worldwide success of introduced land bird species. The results of my analyses contribute to a greater ecological understanding of the traits that correlate with the successful establishment of non-native species. Notably, the three major conclusions that I have drawn from this thesis are: 1. Non-random patterns of successful establishment exist for introduced land bird taxa that have experienced a repeated number of introduction attempts. This result supports the idea that introduced species have an inherent likelihood of either succeeding or failing to establish non-native populations. 2. Eco-physiological traits are important correlates for determining the variability in introduction outcome for non-native land bird species. With reliable information on introduction attempts and taxa-specific traits predictive models are possible that quantify the outcome of repeated introduction attempts across non-native species. 3. Islands are not universally less resistant than mainland regions to the successful establishment of non-native species. This perception is a reflection of the greater number of introduction attempts to islands rather than an effect of biotic resistance. Any differences in the success of introduction attempts can be attributed largely to differences in the proportion of introductions that have been made across biogeographic regions. I have highlighted that data are accessible for global analyses of the variability in the successful establishment of non-native species. Although establishment success is not a deterministic process, the characteristics of an introduced species can influence the probability of its succeeding. I have shown that with adequate eco-physiological information, and for introduced land bird species at least, this probability can be predicted. These results refute previous suggestions that the stochastic component of species introductions will always overshadow any emerging patterns of successful establishment among non-native populations.

In 2003, an intertidal fish, the Australian oyster blenny (Omobranchus anolius) was discovered in Auckland, New Zealand. Subsequent surveys of the inner Hauraki Gulf found only 24 specimens, the majority of which (n=20) occurred at a single location within Tamaki River. Most non-indigenous species do not establish viable populations, few of those that do spread; even fewer become abundant and widespread and have negative ecological impacts. Little was known about the ecology of this fish, it was unclear whether it would establish and spread in New Zealand, and in the event it did, what effect it would have on native flora and fauna.

Introduced predators can have strong negative effects on native prey populations; the severity of this impact can be greater than that of native predators and can change with multiple predator introductions. I examined relationships between native fish assemblages and five widely introduced piscivorous fishes: largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides, northern pike Esox lucius, rock bass Ambloplites rupestris, smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu and walleye Sander vitreus. Analysis of data from over 9000 lakes in Ontario, Canada, revealed that the presence of these piscivores reduces prey species richness, and that the magnitude of this impact varies with predator species and predator richness. There was no difference in the effects of introduced and native smallmouth bass populations on prey richness. Results from a multi-lake field study at Algonquin Park (Ontario) suggested predators structure nearshore fish assemblages, although to a lesser degree than spatial and environmental factors. There was little evidence that fish assemblages change through space and time with increased predator richness, implying functional redundancy of later invaders.

Abstract:
The surveillance and control of introduced species has become an increasingly important, yet often controversial, form of environmental management. I investigate why and how introduced species management is initiated; whether, why and how it is contested; and what relations and outcomes emerge ‘in practice’. I examine how introduced species management is being done in the United Kingdom through detailed social scientific analyses of the processes, practices, and disputes involved in a series of management case studies. First, I demonstrate how some established approaches to the design and delivery of management initiatives can render them conflict-prone, ineffective and potentially unjust. Then, examining a disputesurrounding a state-initiated eradication of monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus), I show why and how ‘parakeet protectors’ opposed the initiative. I identify the significance of divergent evaluations of the risks posed by introduced wildlife; personal and community attachments between people and parakeets; and campaigners’ dissatisfaction with central government’s approach to the issue. By following the story of an unauthorised (re)introduction of Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber) to England, I show how adiverse collective has, at least temporarily, been united and empowered by a shared understanding of beavers as ‘belonging’ in the UK. I consider how nonhuman citizenship is socio-politically negotiated, and how the beavers have become enrolled in a ‘wild experiment’. Finally, through a multi- sited study of grey squirrel (Sciuruscarolinensis) control initiatives, I find important variations in management practitioners’ approaches to killing squirrels, and identify several ‘modes of killing’ that comprise different primary motivations, moral principles, ultimate aims, and practical methods. I identify multiple ways in which people respond and relate to introduced wildlife, and demonstrate how this multiplicity produces both socio-political tensions and accords. Furthermore, throughout this thesis I make a series of propositions for re-configuring the management of introduced species in ways that explicitly incorporate inclusive, constructive, and context-appropriate socio-political deliberations into its design and implementation.

Globalization has seen an unprecedented dispersal of exotic and alien species worldwide resulting in worldwide homogenization and sometimes extinction of indigenous or endemic taxa. When an exotic species becomes established in a new habitat the invasive organisms are capable of having an impact on indigenous community dynamics and the overall structure and function of ecosystems. Furthermore, the impact of invasion is determined by the geographical range, abundance and the per-capita or per-biomass effect of the invader. However, the success of the introduced organisms is reliant on their ability to acclimate to the physiochemical conditions of the newly invaded environment.Freshwater ecosystems are especially vulnerable to invasions because there are numerous potential routes of introduction including intentional pathways such as stocking, and unintentional pathways such as the release of ballast water and aquarium releases. Efforts to limit the introduction of invasive species or to manage established exotic populations are often hindered by insufficient understanding of the natural history of problematic species. Relatively little is known regarding the physiological tolerances of many taxa. Knowledge about specific species ecophysiological constraints allows for the prediction of future patterns of invasion more accurately, including where an introduced organism would probably survive, thrive and disperse. Furthermore, data on the physiological tolerances of an introduced exotic organism may provide data necessary for effective management and control. This studyinvestigated three invasive species in the Nseleni River system in a protected area in KwaZulu-Natal. The species studied were, Tarebia granifera (Quilted melania – Lamarck, 1822), Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus (Suckermouth armoured catfish - Weber, 1991) and Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth – (Martius) Solms-Laubach,). The Nseleni River flows into Lake Nsezi which is responsible for providing potable water to the surrounding towns and industry, as well as the surrounding rural communities. The Enseleni Nature reserve has become the centre for biodiversity dispersal in the immediate area, due to the change in landscape surrounding the protected area.An important step in developing alien invasive species management strategies in protected areas is determining their extent and invasive traits. Tarebia granifera is a prosobranch gastropod originally from South-East Asia that has become invasive in several countries around the world including South Africa. Snail populations were sampled at nine sites throughout the Nseleni/Mposa river system every six weeks over a twelve month period. The snail was abundant throughout the system, especially in shallow waters of less than 1m in depth.The first positive identification the loricariid catfish Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus for the Nseleni River was in 2006. The original introduction is believed to have been via the aquarium trade. The aim of the study was to assess the usefulness of the unified framework with regard to management of fish invasions by assessing the invasion stage of the loricariid population and identifying appropriate management actions using the Blackburn et al. (2011) framework. The fish were sampled at nine different sites and three different depths over a period of twelve months, as well as when two ichthyological surveys were carried out on the Nseleni River system. This invasive fish has been located throughout the system and both male and female fish were collected. The smallest fish sampled was a fingerling of a day or two old and the smallest pregnant female was a mere 270mm TL. This is a clear indication that this fish is breeding in the river system.Although T. granifera and P. disjunctivus were abundant in the Nseleni/Mposa river system, it was not clear what their role in the system was, and in particular if they were competing with any of the indigenous species. Therefore, isotope samples were collected from numerous taxa over a two week period, with the exception of Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus samples, which were collected over 12 months. The δ13C and δ15N signatures of all samples were determined. The niche overlap between the invasive and indigenous snails was effectively zero (1.02E-13%), indicating no shared food resources. The medium ranges of dNRb (7.14) and dCRb (9.07) for the invasive fish indicate that it utilizes a wider range of food resources and trophic levels than the majority of indigenous fish. A medium CDb value (2.34) for the invasive fish species, P. disjunctivus, describes medium trophic diversity, with three indigenous species possessing higher diversity and three possessing lower diversity. Furtherresults indicated that there was no direct dietary competition between P. disjunctivus and indigenous species. Eichhornia crassipes was first recorded on the Nseleni River in 1978, and has been shown to have a significant negative impact on the biodiversity of the Nseleni/Mposa River system and therefore required a control intervention. Although biological control using the two weevil species Neochetina eichhornia (Warner) and N. bruchi (Hustache) has been credited with affecting a good level of control, the lack of a manipulated post-release evaluation experiments has undermined this statement. Five experimental plots of water hyacinth of 20m2 were sprayed with an insecticide to control weevils. After ten months the plants in the sprayed plots were significantly bigger and heavier than those in the control plots that had natural populations of the biological control agents. This study has shown unequivocally that biological control has contributed significantly to the control of water hyacinth on the Nseleni/Mposa River system.The management plan for the Enseleni Nature Reserve identifies the need to control invasive and/or exotic organisms within the boundary of the protected area. In addition, set guidelines have been implemented on how to control these organisms, so that indigenous organisms are least affected. Lack of control of exotic organisms can have serious consequences for indigenous species. It is therefore of utmost importance that the population dynamics of the invading organism be understood, what the potential impact could be and how to control them. Furthermore, it has also acknowledged the threat of possible exotic species invasions from outside of the protected area that might result in threats to the protected area and that these must be investigated, researched and managed.This thesis has identified Tarebia granifera, Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus and Eichhornia crassipes as being a threat to indigenous biodiversity within the protected area, as well as in adjacent areas to the protected area. The thesis will therefore investigate the hypothesis that both Tarebia granifera and Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus are having a direct negative effect on available food resources for indigenous species of organisms. In addition, this thesis will investigate if theNeochetina species that have previously been introduced onto E. crassipes are having any negative effect on this invasive alien aquatic plant.

The detrimental impact of invasive, non-native species on biodiversity conservation and ecosystem function is widely recognised. The invasion of predatory species can have particularly deleterious consequences on native species in the invaded range and there is an increasing awareness of, and necessity for, management action to minimise these impacts. There is a growing body of literature identifying the impacts of invasive species and priorities for conservation action. However, there is a noticeable gap between the rising scientific output regarding invasive species control and conservation measures, and the management action required to implement recommendations. The American mink (Neovison vison, hereafter mink) has been a recent focus of invasive species research and management. Mink are semi-aquatic mustelids and generalist predators and were introduced to countries around the world for fur farming. Feral populations have established across the introduced range with devastating consequences for native species, particularly birds and mammals. In the UK, mink are held partly responsible for the decline in water voles (Arvicola amphibius) and in Scotland in particular, breeding seabirds are significantly impacted by mink predation. Control of mink in North East Scotland has proven successful using an adaptive management, community-based approach but there is currently no equivalent project in the complex, coastal landscape of west Scotland. This study aimed to provide information that could refine and further develop management plans for mink in north and west Scotland by acquiring a better understanding of the ecology of mink in Scotland to inform the implementation of control. Mink were distributed across all but the far north of Scotland. There was spatial and temporal variation in the pattern and rate of their expansion which was attributed to landscape heterogeneity. In northwest Scotland, availability of suitable habitat was restricted to the coastline and consequently, the availability of prey was hypothesised to be limited to coastal areas. Indeed, the diet of mink in northwest Scotland had a greater input from marine resources than those in southwest Scotland, where habitat availability and, therefore, terrestrial food resources, extended inland. Landscape features were shown to affect the direction of colonisation, with mountains restricting and valleys facilitating dispersal. Population genetic studies confirmed that mink dispersal in northwest and northeast Scotland was limited by mountain barriers. Additionally, populations in northwest Scotland were likely to have originated from southwest Scotland. These results suggest that mink control should be primarily focussed in coastal habitats in west Scotland and that the risk of reinvasion from relatively close populations in northeast Scotland is minimal. Volunteer involvement in conservation projects is being accepted increasingly as a cost-effective way to gather ecological information and implement conservation over large spatial scales. The landscape of west Scotland, particularly in northern areas, is complex, remote and sparsely populated by humans which consequently creates challenges for executing mink control. Ecotourism boat operators were concerned about the presence of mink and their effect on local wildlife in coastal areas and were willing to volunteer in mink management. Consequently ecotourism boat operators could provide a key link between management recommendations and implementation. This study combined methodologies from ecological modelling, population genetics, chemical analyses and social science to address questions regarding invasive species management. This holistic approach has resulted in a thorough overview of the distribution and ecology of an invasive species as well as recommendations for management action and implementation that will be applicable to a range of invasive species.

Ceratostoma ioornatum is an introduced marine snail in Puget Sound, Washington. Two of five native species tested as possible predators ate Ceratostoma. These two species, the crabs Cancer gracilis and Lopbppaoopeys bellys, did not eat native snails similar to Ceratpstpma, but ate native and introduced bivalves more than Ceratpstpma. The reasons for the differences in predation seemed to be explained by shell strength of the prey species. The presence of Ceratpstpma adds a new type of prey to the menu of the two crab species at the sites studied.

Deer have been introduced outside their native ranges numerous times worldwide, causing significant economic and environmental impacts. The scale of problems caused by some introduced deer species is expected to increase, while others are relatively harmless and may be important for conservation as their numbers decline in native regions. This thesis examines the factors promoting invasion in non-native deer, and investigates the population genetics of two deer species introduced to Great Britain. Factors hypothesised to predict invasion success were tested using a comparative analysis of the outcomes of introductions of non-native deer populations. Two modelling approaches were taken to account for confounding effects in species-level and population-level analyses, and different factors were found to explain success at different stages of the invasion process. Populations of roe deer expanding from refugia and reintroductions were examined, and differences in genetic diversity between core and peripheral populations, alongside a decline in diversity with rate of expansion from the core were found. High levels of differentiation between and among core and peripheral populations suggest that genetic drift is the major factor causing these patterns. Using a genome scan of British and European roe deer, loci potentially under selection were identified. Association between some of these loci and environmental variables suggests that climatic extremes may have a role in exerting selective pressures on roe populations. The Chinese water deer is severely declining in range and number in its native habitat, but rapidly expanding after being introduced to Great Britain. Relatively high levels of diversity in native Chinese populations, and significant differentiation between the Chinese and British populations were found. The source population of the British deer is likely to be extinct, and the level of genetic structuring indicates that conserving populations across both ranges is important to maintaining their diversity.

Resource subsidies are flows of nutrients from one ecosystem to another. Sandy beach ecosystems are at the interface between land and sea and thus receive nutrients from both land/seascapes. The seasonal nesting of sea turtles introduces large inputs of eggs, and so nutrients, onto sandy beach ecosystems, but little is known about the effects of these spatially and temporally variable nutrient input pulses on the dynamics of consumers in the recipient system. In this study, I examined the ecological role of sea turtles as vectors of nutrients that introduce large amounts of nutrients (in the form of eggs) from distant foraging grounds into nutrient-poor beach ecosystems. Although some of the nutrients return to the sea in the form of hatchlings, nutrients from unhatched and depredated eggs, dead and predated hatchlings, as well as chorioallantoic fluid and egg shells remain on the beach and presumably enter sandy beach food webs. I hypothesized that turtle nutrients significantly increase the availability of nutrients to sandy beach ecosystems and that those nutrients are incorporated by both terrestrial and marine food webs. These hypotheses were tested by comparing isotopic signatures of 13C and 15N of consumers on beaches with high and low turtle nest densities. The response of meiofauna to the decomposition of turtle eggs was also investigated. I predicted that meiofaunal abundance is positively affected by turtle nutrients and that higher meiofaunal abundances will be obtained in decomposing, depredated nests. I tested this hypothesis by comparing meiofaunal abundance in naturally predated nests to densities away from turtle nests (as a control). An in situ experiment that mimics conditions of naturally predated sea turtle nest, was set up to test meiofaunal community responses to turtle nutrients over time. The study indicates that sea turtle eggs represent a short pulsed resource subsidy that increases the nutrient and energy budget of sandy beach ecosystems. The results show that of the five potential nutrient pathways tested, ghost crabs appear to consume egg nutrients in measurable quantities, altering their diet and feeding behaviour according to food availability. The study also showed that there was a strong, but short-lived positive response of meiofauna to the introduction of nutrients, with increased abundance of all taxa in predated nests and experimental treatments. This response was particularly strong for nematodes which peaked in abundance after seven days. I conclude that turtle-derived nutrients represent a pulsed resource subsidy that makes significant contribution to the energy budget of sandy beach/dune ecosystems.

The introduced common warthog, Phacochoerus africanus, in the Eastern Cape is increasing rapidly both in numbers and distribution, despite attempts by landowners to reduce numbers and exclude warthogs. These control attempts are motivated by concerns over the impacts of warthogs, on vegetation, soil and other animal species. This expansion of warthog populations is paradoxical given that a species of warthog occurred historically in this part of the world, apparently at low densities and was wiped out in the mid-1800s. The question therefore arises as to why warthogs are able to overcome population regulation attempts now, and this becomes an invasive species issue as the species now occurring in the Eastern Cape is in fact an introduced species. The objectives of the study were to investigate the status of warthogs as an introduced invasive species in the Eastern Cape by documenting the rate and direction of population expansion, ecological impacts and possible dietary shift of the introduced species, P. africanus compared to the extinct species P. aethiopicus. The research approach adapted here was to test the hypotheses that, (1) the success of P. africanus in the Eastern Cape reflects dietary differences of the two species based on observations of different dental adaptations, as P. africanus has functional incisors, which are absent in P. aethiopicus. Stable carbon isotope analysis of the tooth enamel was used to determine the diet of the two species. (2) Common warthogs are specialized grazers and will impact on a limited range of grass species, this hypothesis was addressed by describing the diet of common warthogs in one site in the Eastern Cape to identify plant species at risk due to invasion by P. africanus, and microhistological faecal analysis was used. (3) Common warthogs have successfully expanded their range in the Eastern Cape since their introduction and are now showing impact, this was addressed by describing the range of expansion of P. africanus in the Eastern Cape, as well as reviewing landowner perceptions of the impacts of warthogs, this was based on questionnaire surveys distributed in the Sundays and the Fish River valleys. The results of the study showed that there are differences in the diet of Cape warthog P. aethiopicus and common warthog P. africanus. The Cape warthog was largely a grazer (86 percent C4 grasses in their diet), while P. africanus is also a grazer (71 percent of C4 grasses in their diet), but with a larger proportion of browse in their diet. These results support the hypothesis that the presence of functional incisors in the common warthog might provide the common warthog with foraging advantages over the Cape warthog. This might be a contributing factor to the success of this invasive species in the Eastern Cape, and might explain the rapid disappearance of Cape warthogs in the 1800s, which coincided with rapid expansion of herds of domestic grazers. A total of twelve grass species are used by common warthogs and are therefore most vulnerable to impacts of this invasive species. Common warthogs are rapidly expanding their range particularly around the Sundays and the Great Fish River valleys and they are perceived by landowners to have impacts on grass cover, soils and fencing. This spread of warthog in the Eastern Cape exhibits characteristics of an invasive species. In light of the findings of this study, it is therefore important that government authorities and other parties concerned recognize that common warthogs are invasive in the Eastern Cape.

Since globalization have promoted the ornamental trade and accelerated the movement of freshwater fishes around the world, non-native species pose a high potential to be released into local freshwater habitats, and to spread and establish as invasive and nuisance species with adverse ecological, economic and social impacts. This study aimed to investigate the potential of the ornamental freshwater fish trade as an invasion pathway in Hong Kong, assess the ecological risk of common aquarium freshwater fish species being traded in the local market, identify species of concern and recommend ways for their management with a view to minimizing biological invasion risk associated with the aquarium trade. Based on a series of systematic market surveys through visiting 46 major aquarium shops in Hong Kong, about 167 freshwater fish species were found in the local aquarium trade between summer 2012 and spring 2013. Twenty-five species were randomly selected to go through two standard ecological risk assessment protocols (i.e., FISK & IFRA). The assessment results indicated that the goldfish (Carassius auratus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio carpio) and Wel’s catfish (Silurus glanis) have a high invasive risk in Hong Kong. The ornamental trade is one of the significant sources of freshwater fish invasions in Hong Kong. An integrated invasive species management plan is recommended to apply and implement in Hong Kong. The key elements of this management plan include (1) development of law and regulation on invasive species, (2) establishment of an early detection programme (like the current study), (3) implementation of control and eradication measures, (4) setting up invasive species handling guidelines and (5) fostering public education programs on biological invasion prevention. The plan should involve the participation of all stakeholders, such as government, industry, social community organization and public in order to engage them to jointly effectively tackle and manage invasive species and thereby conserve Hong Kong’s aquatic biodiversity.

The impacts of Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) are well documented, and INNS management is widely considered one of top threats to global biodiversity and ecosystem function. The American signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, is a destructive invader of freshwater ecosystems. In Scotland, this species currently has a restricted distribution. Despite the known impacts and high rates of dispersal, little is being done to manage populations that threaten to spread into Scotland's economically important catchments. One barrier to action on the management of signal crayfish is uncertainty over the implementation and efficacy of control methods. Capture-mark-recapture analysis was used to estimate the size- and season-specific capture probabilities of three traditional and two novel mechanical removal methods. By simulating the effect of harvest with these removal methods on a density-independent population model, a range of optimal seasonal combinations of removal methods were derived. Little empirical evidence exists in compensatory density-dependent dynamics in signal crayfish. I found that the probability of an individual cannibalising was affected by its size and also the density of conspecifics around it. I trialled a seasonally optimal combination of removal methods in two populations, manipulating sections of stream with different crayfish removal intensities, and tracked the movements of marked individuals. There was a high rate of dispersal (33%) that was influenced by the quality of the patch it was leaving, dispersing to, and the intensities of removal applied to the stream sections. Crayfish had a greater probability of moving to high density sections with the highest removal treatment. My conclusions suggest that conventional removal efforts (trapping), may fail due to compensatory effects on mortality and dispersal, and that novel approaches such as targeting smaller size classes are required, but only after quantitative predictions and field trials.

Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS), or Invasive Alien Species, are organisms introduced by humans outside their natural range that have “negative impacts on biodiversity, socio-economy or human health”. Growing awareness of the ecological and socio-economic impacts of INNS has led to a mushrooming of control attempts across the UK. The costs of such environmental management has grown far in excess of the availability of funds to afford control by professionals and led to widespread involvement of volunteers in INNS management and monitoring. This thesis aimed to identify challenges in collaborations between lay people and experts in ecological restoration and to critically examine some of the claims made about the benefits of citizen participation on the sustainability and democratisation of environmental management and on citizen empowerment. Qualitative research methodology was employed to explore in depth motivations, experiences, intentions and views of volunteers and of the organisations that attempt to enrol them in practical conservation work and monitoring activities. We found that caring for nature, the experience of nature and the activities, and social interactions were the three main drivers of volunteering. Importantly, over time, motivations were shaped by the interplay between individual expectations and experiences with the social and ecological context and changed from identifiable personal goals and functions to more complex attachments to the place and the group. Our research also revealed that while some of these key motivations may be recognised by project managers, their description of costeffectiveness, local ownership and empowerment as complementary volunteering goals were often not aligned in practice. Moreover, decision-making may remain largely expert-based, with volunteers not perceiving their knowledge to be valid or a useful contribution to decision-making. Enhancing the sustainability and democratic nature of INNS management requires reflexive practice of citizen engagement that explicitly considers different interests and views but also invites citizens to reflect on their role in the co-production of conservation practice and knowledge.

Understanding the mechanisms of invasion is critical in order to control an invasive species. Poa pratensis L. (Kentucky bluegrass) is an invasive species that has been present in the northern Great Plains (NGP) for over 100 years, but has become a dominant species in the mixed grass region recently. My dissertation seeks to answer one critical question—why has P. pratensis become such a successful invasive species in the NGP? I first asked if the invasion was caused by adaptation and/or propagule pressure. I screened the genetic fingerprint of invasive P. pratensis in the NGP along with measuring the genomic content of wild plants and compared them to common cultivars. I found virtually no overlap between lawn cultivars and invasive P. pratensis populations. This was further supported by a narrow range of genomic content in wild individuals compared to the lawn cultivars. I also found no evidence of geographical patterning which is consistent with the hypothesis that local adaptation is not pervasive in P. pratensis. I then asked whether P. pratensis was a strong competitor compared to dominant plant species native to the tallgrass prairie. I studied competitive effect between Poa pratensis, Nassella viridula, Pascopyrum smithii, and Bouteloua gracilis through a species-pair competition experiment. Based on the relative interaction indices, P. smithii and P. pratensis were competitive against B. gracilis, and P. smithii was competitive against N. viridula. Additionally, P. pratensis was facilitated by all three species in the experiment. This study indicates that P. pratensis may be somewhat competitive. Finally, I asked whether the increase in the frequency of P. pratensis in the NGP may be attributed to environmental factors. In order to understand long-term correlations between P. pratensis invasion and environmental variables, I resampled plots that were previously sampled for species composition in 1978, 1979, and 1999. I found that P. pratensis levels did increase across plots and was corrrelated with higher levels of precipitation. My research indicates that increased precipitation in the NGP as a result of climate change is correlated with P. pratensis invasion in the NGP.

The virile crayfish (Orconectes virilis), an aggressive polytrophic species, has been introduced into many Arizona streams. I investigated competition and predation between this crayfish and several native Arizona fishes. I conducted field experiments to assess competition for food between crayfish and fish, and laboratory experiments to examine competition for shelter and food, and predation. In Sabino Creek, I manipulated crayfish densities in isolated pools to examine effects of crayfish on growth, mortality, and recruitment of Gila chub (Gila intermedia). Regardless of crayfish density, Gila chub declined slightly in weight and condition. Mortality and recruitment did not differ between densities of crayfish. I examined crayfish effects on benthic macroinvertebrates, a submerged aquatic macrophyte and associated invertebrates, and three fish species in a small stream in the White Mountains by fencing eight stream sections to prevent movement. The three fishes were speckled dace (Rhinichthys osculus), Sonora sucker (Catostomus insignis), and desert sucker (C. clarki). Molluscs > 10 mm and macrophytes were less abundant at sites with a high density of crayfish than at sites with low crayfish densities. Insect diversity was lower in high- vs. low-density sites. No treatment effect was observed on growth or condition of individually marked fish. Short-term laboratory experiments demonstrated predatory interactions and competition for shelter between crayfish and Gila chub, desert sucker, and speckled dace. Crayfish used shelter more than fish, displaced fish from shelter, and frequently attacked fish. Fish never attacked crayfish, and only once displaced crayfish from shelter. In predation experiments, crayfish preyed upon all species, but preyed most heavily upon desert suckers. Fish never altered use of the water column in the presence of crayfish. Density manipulation experiments in a laboratory measured food competition between crayfish and two native fishes. Growth of Gila chub was less affected by crayfish than by increased density of Gila chub. Thus crayfish are not strong competitors with Gila chub for food. However, growth of flannelmouth sucker (Catostomus latipinnis) was negatively impacted by presence of crayfish. These laboratory experiments provide evidence that introduced crayfish can reduce fish growth by competition for food, and that native fishes are vulnerable to crayfish predation.

The aim of the thesis was to document patterns in breeding and migration in Swedish Canada geese Branta canadensis, to explain these against the genetic and historical background of the population, and to test predictions of hypotheses pertaining to parental investment. The Canada goose population in Sweden was founded by the introduction of a few individuals in the 1930's. DNA fingerprint similarity between geese breeding in Sweden was on average at the same level as between inbred close relatives in other wild bird species. The genetic variability of the population appeared to be considerably reduced in comparison to that of Canada geese breeding in North America. Dispersal and migration patterns were studied using plastic neck-bands that could be identified at long distance. Most Canada goose females nested at the lake where they grew up. Males were more prone to disperse than females, although most of them still returned to breed close to their area of origin. Geese from three breeding areas in Sweden had different winter distributions, although wintering areas overlapped considerably. Individual geese tended to return to the same wintering area as they had used in previous years. The females' investment in the egg clutch was related to the migration distance from spring foraging areas to the nesting area, suggesting an energetic cost of migration for egg production. Within breeding seasons, clutch size decreased with later initiation of nesting, but only in years with early breeding. A probable reason for this decrease was that body reserves available for egg production were larger in early layers. In years with late breeding, clutch size did not decrease, most likely because late-nesting females could supplement their body reserves by foraging on fresh vegetation. Nest defence intensity was studied by recording the behaviour of the female geese when a human approached the nest. The results largely confirmed predictions for nest defence intensity extracted from parental investment theory.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo primordial investigar as possibilidades de variação de significado decorrentes das orações adverbiais introduzidas pela conjunção quando. Consideramos que, para além da idéia temporal - à qual boa parte de nossas gramáticas costuma se limitar - outras circunstâncias adverbiais, como causa e condição principalmente, podem coexistir nas construções formadas pela chamada oração principal e pela oração subordinada adverbial. Para tanto, baseamos nossa pesquisa na análise de 60 exemplos retirados do jornal O Globo e da revista Veja, dois dos principais veículos de comunicação escrita em língua portuguesa. Ao fim, chegamos à conclusão de que, apesar do importante papel exercido por fatores sintático-gramaticais, como as diferentes combinações entre os tempos e os modos verbais, o sentido final das construções examinadas é, em última análise, resultado de fatores de ordem semântica, isto é, das relações de significado que se estabelecem entre o predicado e cada um dos termos que o constituem.
This dissertation´s main objective is to investigate the possibilities of semantic variation on adverbials sentences introduced by the conjunction quando. We consider that, beyond the idea of time - to which some of our grammars use to be restricted - other adverbials circumstances, like cause and condition mainly, can coexist on the constructions formed by main clause and adverbial clause. To reach our goals, we based our study on the analysis of 70 examples found on O Globo journal and on Veja magazine., two of the most important vehicles of written communication in Portuguese. As a result, we concluded that, despite of the great importance of the role played by syntactical and grammatical factors, like the different combinations between verbal times and modes, the final meaning of the constructions that we examined is, definitely, determined by semantic factors, that is, the relationship of meanings established between the predicate and each of its terms.

Muscovy ducks are native only to Central and South America, Mexico, and parts of southern Texas and are considered invasive in some areas outside of their native range. Although they have been introduced worldwide, they remain largely unstudied. The primary focus of this study was to relate Muscovy duck abundance to habitat characteristics of wetlands in Tampa, Florida. Muscovy abundance was measured using point count methods at 21 wetland sites that occur within an eight km radius of the University of South Florida’s main campus. Habitat features at these sites were assessed using field methods and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) (Arc 10.1v). Mann-Whitney U tests and Chi-squared tests were performed to identify significant differences between quantitative data groups. A Chi-squared test determined that there was not a positive correlation between Muscovy abundance and fountains or water regime, yet identified a significant relationship between Muscovy abundance and fencing, in which Muscovies did not frequently occupy ponds with fencing. Mann-Whitney U tests did not identify significances between Muscovy abundance and other habitat groups. Since Muscovy ducks are listed as an invasive species, identifying habitat preferences and deterrents will assist land managers and property owners with habitat modifications in preventing or controlling nuisance Muscovy populations.

Abstract:
The response to host plant variation shapes the long-term success of phytophagous insects. Two gall-forming tephritid flies, Urophora affinis and U. quadrifasciata, oviposit in flower buds of Centaurea diffusa and C. maculosa (Asteraceae). Females of both fly species chose among plants, among groups of buds on plants, and among buds. Among plant choices were correlated with buds per plant. Among bud choices corresponded to larval developmental requirements. Insect attack led to gall formation, bud abortion, and reduced seed production. Bud abortion, caused by probing females, limited gall densities. Increased densities of U. affinis females relative to oviposition sites led to more U. affinis galls, increased bud abortion, fewer U. quadrifasciata galls, and fewer seeds. A temporal refuge for seed production was observed. Plants compensated only slightly for aborted buds. Bud abortion may increase the search time between successful ovipositions. A simulation model based on this premise implied that bud abortion may dramatically reduce total gall formation. Plant quality was manipulated in an attempt to shift three population limiting factors. Plants responded to fertilization and watering with an increase in bud numbers. Except for two year-site-treatment combinations, galls per developed bud did not differ significantly between treatments. Treated plants did not differ in their propensity to abort buds. U. affinis larvae developed faster in fertilized plants. Among year comparisons showed that the density of buds available for oviposition was limited by precipitation, non-random insect attack, and, in the longer term, by the reduction in seed production due to fly attack. Bud densities, in turn, limited gall densities.

Abstract:
Biological invasions are an important issue of global change and an increased understanding of invasion processes is of crucial importance for both conservation managers and international trade. In this thesis, I have studied the invasion of the brown seaweed Fucus evanescens, to investigate the fate and effect of a perennial, habitat-forming seaweed introduced to a coastal ecosystem. A long-term study of the spread of F. evanescens in Öresund (southern Sweden) showed that the species was able to expand its range quickly during the first 20 years after the introduction, but that the expansion has been slow during the subsequent 30 years. Both in Öresund and in Skagerrak, the species is largely restricted to sites where native fucoids are scarce. Laboratory experiments showed that the restricted spread of F. evanescens cannot be explained by the investigated abiotic factors (wave exposure and salinity), although salinity restricts the species from spreading into the Baltic Sea. Neither did I find evidence for that herbivores or epibiota provide biotic resistance to the invader. On the contrary, F. evanescens was less consumed by native herbivores, both compared to the native fucoids and to F. evanescens populations in its native range, and little overgrown by epiphytes. Instead, the restricted spread may be due to competition from native seaweeds, probably by pre-occupation of space, and the establishment has probably been facilitated by disturbance. The studies provided little support for a general enemy release in introduced seaweeds. The low herbivore consumption of F. evanescens in Sweden could not be explained by release from specialist herbivores. Instead, high levels of chemical anti-herbivore defence metabolites (phlorotannins) could explain the pattern of herbivore preference for different fucoids. Likewise, the low epibiotic colonisation of F. evanescens plants could be explained by high resistance to epibiotic survival. This shows that colonisation of invading seaweeds by native herbivores and epibionts depends on properties of the invading species. The large differences between fucoid species in their quality as food and habitat for epibionts and herbivores imply that invasions of such habitat-forming species may have a considerable effect on a number of other species in shallow coastal areas. However, since F. evanescens did not exclude other fucoids in its new range, its effect on the recipient biota is probably small.

Cervids are a widespread family of ungulates, native to the Americas, Europe and Asia and introduced to Australia. Densities of cervids have increased in North America, Europe and Japan during the last couple of decades, due to changes in land use, reduced hunting, lack of large carnivores and changes in management practices. Where they occur at high densities, native and introduced cervids may have profound effects on vegetation, causing knock-on effects on other taxa. Cervids are in some instances managed towards changing the local distribution through supplemental feeding. These supplemental feeding stations are causing localized areas of high cervid abundance in the landscape, and may have effects on plants and animal species. In this thesis I investigate how high cervid densities and the practice of supplemental feeding impact birds and small mammals through effects on; 1) food resources, and 2) habitat structure. Utilizing a simulated moose (Alces alces) browsing experiment, I tested how varying moose densities and varying site productivity affects vole preference for bilberry. I found that voles preferred unbrowsed bilberry at low productivity sites, while they preferred lightly browsed bilberry at high productivity sites, I was however unable to explain the preference pattern with the chemical composition of the bilberry. However, moose do impact vole food preferences and this could, depending on the productivity of the site, potentially affect food selection and population dynamics over large geographical areas. Moose browsing pressure and nutrient input gradually decline with distance from supplemental winter feeding stations. I utilized this gradient to test how moose activity affects reproduction in pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) and great tits (Parus major). The two species showed contrasting responses to moose feeding stations, great tits preferred to nest away from feeding stations where they showed higher feeding frequency and also produced more fledglings compared to close to feeding stations. Pied flycatchers on the other hand preferred to nest close to feeding stations where they had higher feeding frequency and fledgling mass was higher compared to further away. Hence, for both species moose browsing is affecting food availability that subsequently affects reproductive performance. Moose supplemental feeding stations also changed the habitat for small mammals from dwarf shrub dominated to grass and forb dominated. This did not have any effect on reproductive performance of the small mammals, but it did affect species composition along a gradient from the feeding stations. There was higher abundance of Microtus spp. and common shrews (Sorex araneus) close to feeding stations, while bank voles (Myodes glareoleus) had higher abundance away from feeding stations, the latter however was not statistically significant. Small mammals in Australian coastal heath were generally negatively associated with introduced rusa deer (Cervus timorensis), however one species responded positively to historical densities of rusa deer. It was however not possible to confirm these effects as being due to changes in habitat structure for the small mammals. However they may be explained by qualitative changes in the vegetation or alternatively by direct effects of deer through trampling or predation. Cervids and their management have an impact on other fauna, however the effects vary depending on small mammal and bird species. The effects of cervids also depend on the habitat requirements and foraging preferences of the small mammals and birds. Effects may be mediated through both food resources and habitat structure and are dependent on site productivity and cervid density.

Abstract:
The long-term success of an introduced population depends on the ecological conditions in its new environment, but is also influenced by stochasticity. This is particularly clear in the first stage of an invasion when the population is still small and either goes extinct quickly or establishes a self-sustaining population. Once established, some populations grow and spread spatially, with potential impacts on native communities and ecosystems. The role of stochasticity during these later invasion stages remains unclear. Furthermore, little is known about the population genetic and evolutionary consequences of stochastic invasion trajectories. With this dissertation, I would like to contribute to a stochastic eco-genetic theory of the entire invasion process—from the first introduction up to potential impacts. The overarching questions in this dissertation are: a) How does a population’s movement through the invasion process depend on ecological factors influencing its average growth rate? b) How does it depend on factors influencing the stochastic variability in the population dynamics? c) How much genetic diversity do introduced populations harbor on average upon reaching a certain point in the invasion process? d) To what extent can the population-genetic consequences of invasion trajectories feed back onto the population dynamics? Together with my advisors and coauthors, I have conducted four studies, each addressing two or more of these questions for specific ecological scenarios. We employ several types of stochastic models: Markov chains, Markov processes, their diffusion approximations, and coalescent-like genealogy simulations. In Chapter 1 (Wittmann et al., 2013a, appeared in Theoretical Population Biology), we focus on a factor influencing the introduced population’s average growth rate: the intensity of competition with an ecologically similar native species. Our results indicate that the expected time until the introduced species drives the native competitor to extinction is smallest for intermediate competition intensity. This phenomenon results from the opposing effects of competition intensity at different points of the invasion process: On the one hand, intense competition renders the establishment of the introduced population more difficult; on the other hand, it facilitates the later exclusion of the native species. In Chapter 1, we also investigate to what extent the native species’ extinction is accelerated if a reduction in population size entails a reduction in genetic diversity and thus a reduced ability to adapt to a changing environment. We find this eco-genetic feedback to be particularly strong at small competition intensities. In Chapter 2 (Wittmann et al., 2013b, in press at Oikos), we compare introduction regimes with the same average number of individuals introduced per time unit, but with a different temporal distribution. Relative to regimes with many small introduction events, regimes with few large introduction events generate more variability in population-size trajectories. We show that this variability helps introduced populations to overcome difficult stages in the invasion process (those with a negative average growth rate), but is disadvantageous during easy stages (those with a positive average growth rate). In the light of our results, we can reinterpret three published data sets on invasion success under different introduction regimes. In Chapters 3 and 4 (Wittmann et al., 2013c,d), we examine levels of genetic diversity in populations that have successfully overcome a strong demographic Allee effect. In this ecological scenario, the average population growth rate is negative below a certain critical population size and positive above, such that the first stage in the invasion process is difficult and the second one easy. In Chapter 3, we assume Poisson-distributed offspring numbers. We show that compared to successful populations without an Allee effect, successful Allee-effect populations are expected to harbor either more or less genetic diversity, depending on the magnitude of typical founder population sizes relative to the critical population size. Part of the explanation is that, counter-intuitively, successful Allee-effect populations escape particularly fast from the range of small population sizes where genetic drift is strongest. In Chapter 3, we also identify conditions under which the critical population size can be estimated from genetic data. In Chapter 4, we consider a range of offspring-number models leading to either more or less variability in population dynamics than the Poisson model. For a fixed founder population size, we observe that the Allee effect has a negative influence on genetic diversity for small amounts of variability, but a positive influence for large amounts of variability. We show that the differences between our various offspring-number models are so substantial that they cannot be resolved by rescaling the parameters of the Poisson model. Taken together, these results offer some general conclusions with respect to the four main questions raised above. a) How fast an introduced population completes the invasion process is mainly determined by the presence and severity of difficult stages. Therefore, an ecological change promotes invasion success if it lessens such difficult stages. b) From the perspective of the introduced population, variability is advantageous during difficult but not during easy stages of the invasion process. c) Because the strength of genetic drift depends on population size, a key to understanding the population genetic consequences of invasion trajectories is to consider how much time the population of interest spends in different population-size ranges. d) Feedbacks between a reduction in population size and a loss of genetic diversity are strongest in ecological scenarios where the population of interest spends considerable time at small population sizes. Some of the most striking results in this dissertation cannot be understood from a deterministic point of view, but only when considering stochasticity. Thus, stochasticity does not just add “noise” to some average outcome, but can qualitatively change the behavior of biological systems.
Der langfristige Erfolg einer eingeführten Population hängt von den ökologischen Bedingungen in ihrer neuen Umgebung ab, aber auch vom Zufall. Besonders offensichtlich ist die wichtige Rolle des Zufalls für kleine Populationen im Anfangsstadium einer Invasion. In diesem Stadium entscheidet sich, ob die eingeführte Population nach kurzer Zeit ausstirbt oder sich dauerhaft etablieren kann. Manche etablierten Populationen wachsen dann weiter und breiten sich räumlich aus, zum Teil mit schwerwiegenden Folgen für einheimische Gemeinschaften und Ökosysteme. Bislang ist nicht klar, welche Rolle der Zufall in diesen späteren Invasionsstadien spielt und welche populationsgenetischen und evolutionären Auswirkungen vom Zufall geprägte Invasionsverläufe haben. Mit dieser Dissertation möchte ich beitragen zu einer stochastischen öko-genetischen Theorie des gesamten Invasionsprozesses – von der Einführung bis hin zu möglichen Auswirkungen. Meine übergreifenden Fragen sind: a) Welche Rolle für den Invasionsverlauf spielen ökologische Faktoren, die die durchschnittliche Wachstumsrate der eingeführten Population beeinflussen? b) Und welche Rolle spielen Faktoren, die die stochastische Variabilität der Populationsdynamik beeinflussen? c) Wie viel genetische Diversität weisen eingeführte Populationen im Durchschnitt auf, wenn sie einen bestimmten Punkt im Invasionsprozess erreichen? d) Inwiefern können die populationsgenetischen Auswirkungen von Invasionsverläufen wiederum die Populationsdynamik beeinflussen und so zu einer Rückkopplung führen? Zusammen mit meinen Betreuern und Koautoren habe ich vier Studien durchgeführt, die sich für bestimmte ökologische Szenarien jeweils mit mindestens zwei dieser Fragen befassen. Dazu kommen im Verlauf der Dissertation verschiedene Typen von stochastischen Modellen zum Einsatz: Markov-Ketten, Markov- und Diffusionsprozesse sowie Coalescent-artige Genealogie-Simulationen. In Kapitel 1 (Wittmann et al., 2013a, erschienen in Theoretical Population Biology) konzentrieren wir uns auf einen Faktor, der die durchschnittliche Wachstumsrate der Population beeinflusst: die Stärke der Konkurrenz mit einer ökologisch ähnlichen einheimischen Art. Unsere Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die erwartete Zeit bis zum Aussterben des einheimischen Konkurrenten für mittlere Konkurrenzstärken am kleinsten ist. Zusätzlich untersuchen wir in Kapitel 1, wie stark eine öko-genetische Rückkopplung das Aussterben der einheimischen Population beschleunigen würde. Dazu berücksichtigen wir, dass ein Rückgang der einheimischen Populationsgröße zu einem Verlust an genetischer Diversität führt, und das wiederum zu schlechterer Anpassung an veränderte Umweltbedingungen und darum weiterem Schrumpfen der Population. Unsere Ergebnisse legen nahe, dass diese öko-genetische Rückkopplung dann besonders stark ist, wenn die Konkurrenz zwischen einheimischer und eingeführter Art eher schwach ist. In Kapitel 2 (Wittmann et al., 2013b, im Druck bei Oikos) untersuchen wir für feste durchschnittliche Einführungsraten (Individuen pro Zeiteinheit), welche Rolle die zeitliche Verteilung der Individuen spielt. Besonders wichtig ist hierbei die Beziehung zwischen zeitlicher Verteilung und der Variabilität in der Größenentwicklung der Population. Wir zeigen, dass Fälle mit wenigen großen Einführungsereignissen zu mehr Variabilität führen als Fälle mit vielen kleinen Einführungsereignissen. Diese Variabilität hilft den eingeführten Populationen dabei, schwierige Stadien im Invasionsprozess (also solche mit einer negativen durchschnittlichen Wachstumsrate) zu bewältigen, ist aber anderseits in einfachen Stadien mit positiver durchschnittlicher Wachstumsrate von Nachteil. Im Lichte unserer Ergebnisse können wir aus der Literatur bekannte Daten zu Invasionsprozessen neu interpretieren. In den Kapiteln 3 und 4 (Wittmann et al., 2013c,d) untersuchen wir die genetische Diversität von Populationen, die einen starken demografischen Allee-Effekt erfolgreich überwunden haben. Laut Definition ist dabei die durchschnittliche Wachstumsrate bei Populationsgrößen unterhalb einer gewissen kritischen Größe negativ und in größeren Populationen positiv, so dass das erste Stadium des Invasionsprozesses schwierig ist und das zweite einfach. In Kapitel 3 zeigen wir unter der Annahme Poisson-verteilter Nachkommenzahlen, dass erfolgreiche Allee-Effekt-Populationen je nach Startgröße entweder eine höhere oder eine niedrigere durchschnittliche genetische Diversität aufweisen als erfolgreiche Populationen ohne Allee-Effekt. Das kommt zum Teil daher, dass erfolgreiche Allee-Effekt-Populationen besonders schnell das schwierige erste Stadium des Invasionsprozesses verlassen, wo genetische Drift am stärksten ist. Außerdem untersuchen wir in Kapitel 3, unter welchen Bedingungen sich die kritische Populationsgröße aus genetischen Daten schätzen lässt. In Kapitel 4 betrachten wir eine Reihe von Modellen für die Anzahl an Nachkommen von Individuen oder Paaren in der Population. Manche dieser Modelle führen zu mehr stochastischer Variabilität in der Populationsdynamik, andere zu weniger Variabilität als das in Kapitel 3 betrachtete Poisson-Modell. Für feste Startgröße beobachten wir, dass der Allee-Effekt bei kleiner Variabilität einen negativen Einfluss auf die genetische Diversität hat und bei großer Variabilität einen positiven Einfluss. Wir zeigen weiterhin, dass die Unterschiede zwischen unseren Nachkommenzahl-Modellen so substanziell sind, dass sie sich nicht durch eine Umskalierung der Parameter des Poisson-Modells erklären lassen. Zusammen genommen erlauben uns diese Ergebnisse einige allgemeine Schlussfolgerungen bezüglich der vier oben aufgeführten übergreifenden Fragen. a) Wie schnell eine eingeführte Population den Invasionsprozess durchläuft, hängt hauptsächlich davon ab, ob es schwierige Stadien gibt, und wie schwierig diese sind. Deshalb begünstigt eine ökologische Veränderung den Invasionserfolg dann, wenn sie schwierige Stadien im Invasionsprozess mindert. b) Aus der Perspektive der eingeführten Population ist Variabilität in schwierigen Stadien des Invasionsprozesses von Vorteil, aber in einfachen Stadien von Nachteil. c) Da die Stärke der genetischen Drift von der Populationsgröße abhängt, können wir die populationsgenetischen Auswirkungen von Invasionsverläufen verstehen, indem wir analysieren, wie viel Zeit die betrachtete Population in verschiedenen Populationsgrößenbereichen verbringt. d) Rückkopplungen zwischen einem Rückgang der Populationsgröße und einem Verlust genetischer Diversität sind am stärksten, wenn die Population viel Zeit im Bereich kleiner Populationsgrößen verbringt. Einige der wesentlichsten Ergebnisse dieser Dissertation können aus einer deterministischen Perspektive nicht verstanden werden, sondern sind ein direktes Produkt von Stochastizität. Dies macht deutlich, dass Stochastizität nicht einfach einem gewissen Durchschnitts- ergebnis etwas Rauschen hinzufügt, sondern das Verhalten biologischer Systeme qualitativ verändern kann.

Abstract:
Adaptive radiation – the proliferation of species from a single ancestor and diversification into many ecologically different forms – has long been heralded as an important process in the generation of phenotypic diversity. However, the early stages of adaptive radiation are notoriously elusive to observe and study. In this dissertation, I capitalize on communities of introduced non-native Anolis lizards as analogues of early stage adaptive radiations. In Chapter II, I begin by reviewing the concept of “ecological opportunity” – a classic hypothesis put forward as a potential key to understanding when and how adaptive radiation occurs. In Chapter III, I investigate the mechanisms which allow for coexistence and community assembly among ecologically-similar species. To do this I investigate range dynamics and assembly patterns of introduced anoles on the oceanic island of Bermuda. I discover that interspecific partitioning of the structural environment facilitates species coexistence, however the order of species assembly was an important predictor of final community composition. In Chapter IV, I then investigate how interspecific interactions between coexisting species may drive phenotypic divergence. This is the process of character displacement, which has been widely hypothesized to be an important mechanism driving phenotypic divergence in adaptive radiations. To do this I investigate sympatric and allopatric populations of introduced Cuban brown anoles (Anolis sagrei) and Puerto Rican crested anoles (A. cristatellus) in Miami FL, USA. I identify morphological shifts in sympatry, driven by divergence in habitat use and decreases in abundance. This study provides evidence of how selection on both ecologically and sexually-important traits can both drive phenotypic divergence during character displacement. Finally, in Chapter V, after taking advantage of non-native species as model eco-evolutionary systems in previous chapters, I investigate the potentially harmful effects that their presence may have on vulnerable native biodiversity. To do this I investigate the conservation risk posed by newly-discovered populations of A. sagrei on Bermuda to Critically Endangered endemic Bermuda skinks (Plestiodon longirostris). Through a detailed analysis of habitat use, diet, population size, and morphology of A. sagrei on Bermuda, we conclude it likely poses a high conservation threat to P. longirostris through interspecific competition.

Abstract:
This study presents the results of a study on introduced giraffe diet and feeding effects within the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Five sites were selected over a moisture gradient from the mesic east to the arid west of the Eastern Cape to describe giraffe diet and provide baseline data for feeding effect experiments. At each site faecal samples were collected seasonally and diet composition determined by microhistological analysis. Plant species availability was measured using the point intersect method in order to compare plant availability to plant consumption to determine diet preferences. Giraffe diet across the sites showed a unimodal response to rainfall by utilising fewer species in drier areas where plant availability is low and increasing the number of species consumed as the rainfall increases. In higher rainfall areas, giraffe reduced the number of plant species fed upon because of the high availability of important species that reduces the need for a varied diet. Across all sites, plant availability was dominated by woody plant species (more than 90 percent at each site). A total of 57 plants species were recorded as being eaten across the five sites. Several PDI (Principle Diet Items) plant species (Acacia karroo, Schotia afra, Pappea capensis and Euclea undulata) were eaten across sites. Over all the sites, significantly preferred species were Asparagus striatus, Schotia latifolia, Asparagus suaveolens, Commelina benghalensis, Viscum rotundifolium, and Acacia cyclops. Acacia karroo, Schotia afra, Pappea capensis, Rhus crenata, A. tetracantha, and Grewia robusta were utilised in proportion to their availability. Euclea undulata, Rhus longispina and Putterlickia pyracantha were avoided. Feeding effects were tested by erecting exclosures around trees, covering one half of each tree. Ten trees were selected for these manipulative experiments which ran from September 2003 to February 2005. The number of branches, number of leaves, branch orders, branch diameter, branch length, leaf length and leaf width were measured for ten samples per side (enclosed vs. exposed) and analysed using a Wilcoxon matched pairs test and tested for effect size using Cohen’s d. Although no significant differences were detected between the sides measured, the effect size indicated differences in all measurements between sides ranging from low to moderate. Leaf length was greater on the outside of exclosures and showed a moderate difference between the sides in terms of the d-value with the p-value (0.059) tending towards significance. Although leaf width was higher on the inside of exclosures, it only showed a moderate difference for d with no statistical significance. Leaf area was higher on the inside of exclosures and tended to significance (p = 0.059) and similarly the d value indicated moderate differences between the sides in terms of effect size. Similarly branch length was higher on the inside of exclosures although not significantly, the p-value (0.07) approached significance. The effect size for branch length also showed a moderate difference between the sides. The number of branches and the number of leaves showed no statistical differences between the sides although the p-value (0.059) for the number of branches, as well as number of leaves (p = 0.07) approached significance. For both these variables, effect size showed a moderate difference. Giraffe showed diversity in their diet selection across sites but mainly fed upon available species. Some preferred species were however less available and this preference could possibly result in increased pressure on the selected plant species Exclosure experiments showed no significant differences in leaf and shoot characteristics although all measurements showed differences in terms of effect size meriting further investigation. It is concluded that giraffe impact on sites may be reduced if populations are properly managed however, high densities of giraffe could lead to similar vegetation impacts as observed in other areas where giraffe have been introduced and potentially change vegetation structure and plant community composition.

Abstract:
The introduction, spread and concomitant impacts of non-native species are a global problem. Fish are among the most widely introduced vertebrate groups, with their impacts affecting multiple levels of organisation- from individuals, populations and communities, to entire ecosystems. In South Africa, the largest perceived threat to range-restricted endemic headwater stream fishes is said to be invasion by non-native fishes, however, as is the case elsewhere, invasive impacts are often a case of risk perception rather than actual risk analysis. Two range-restricted headwater species, the Eastern Cape redfin Pseudobarbus afer and the Border barb Barbus trevelyani are redlisted by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as ‘Endangered’, primarily due to invasion by non-native fishes. To investigate invasions in South Africa, and provide a quantitative estimate of the impact of non-native fishes on the two imperilled endemics, P. afer and B. trevelyani, the overall aims of this thesis were to: (A) Provide a literature review on non-native fish invasions in South Africa; (B) Using two case studies on the headwaters of the perennial Keiskamma and episodic Swartkops River systems, investigate the naturalisation-invasion continuum to provide a holistic view of the invasion process in these variable environments. The specific thesis objectives were: (1) Reviewing current knowledge of invasive impacts of non-native fishes in South Africa; (2) Investigating invasibility of headwater stream environments by non-native fishes; (3) Determining the establishment success of non-native fishes, (4) Assessing the spatial and temporal impacts of invasion; (5) Understanding mechanisms responsible for non-native fish impacts; (6) Investigating the threat of non-native fish invasion on the genetic diversity of two the two headwater fishes, P. afer and B. trevelyani. Results from the literature review of fish invasions (Chapter 1) showed that South Africa has a long history of non-native fish introductions, spanning two and a half centuries. Currently, 55 species have been introduced or translocated. Many of these introduced species have become fully invasive (36%). Their impacts also span multiple levels of biological organisation. There was a general paucity of studies on fish invasions (38 studies), however, of those conducted, reviewed studies placed emphases on invasive impacts (25 studies) and the transport, introduction, establishment and spread stages of the invasion process were largely ignored. The two study systems, the Swartkops and Keiskamma Rivers, were heavily invaded and numbers of introduced species surpassed that of natives (Chapter 2, 3 and 5). Headwater streams had varying invasibility and a number of non-native species were successfully established (Chapter 2, 3, 5 and 6). The remainder of the invasions were casual incursions into headwater streams from source populations in mainstream and impoundment environments which were invasion hotspots. Irrespective of establishment, four predatory invaders (largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides, smallmouth bass M. dolomieu, brown trout Salmo trutta and rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss) impacted heavily on native fish communities (Chapter 3, 4 and 5). Two broad types of invasion were documented, top down invasion by non-native O. mykiss and S. trutta and upstream invasion by M. salmoides and M. dolomieu (Chapter 3 and 5). Their impacts included changes in community structure, extirpation from invaded stream reaches resulting in contracted distribution, and isolation and fragmentation of native fish populations. The impacts of non-native predatory fishes were particularly acute for P. afer and B. trevelyani. Where non-native predatory fish occurred, P. afer and B. trevelyani had been extirpated (Chapter 3 and 5). As a result both native species exhibited contracted distributions (>20% habitat loss due to invasion). Upstream invasion by centrarchids isolated and fragmented P. afer populations into headwater refugia, while top down invasion by salmonids excluded B. trevelyani from invaded, more pristine stream reaches, by forcing the species into degraded unsuitable lower stream reaches. Predation also disrupted population processes such as adult dispersal for P. afer, and centrarchid-invaded zones acted as demographic sinks, where adults dispersing through invaded reaches were rapidly depleted. While the Mandela lineage of P. afer exhibited little within or between drainage genetic structuring, B. trevelyani was >4% divergent between drainages, and up to 2% divergent between streams within the Keiskamma River system (Chapter 7). The distribution of genetic diversity for B. trevelyani also indicated that the loss of diversity was imminent without immediate conservation interventions. This thesis has provided conclusive evidence that native fishes are vulnerable to invasion and that non-native predatory fishes have significant impacts on native fishes in Eastern Cape headwater streams. If management and conservation measures are implemented, the unwanted introduction and spread of non-native fishes may be restricted, allowing native fishes opportunities for recovery.

When performing an organizational change, it is important to be aware of the culture within the company. The organization at Saab Aerosystems has a huge technical focus, which can of course be beneficial when awakening interest for a change. Another characteristic of Saab Aerosystems is that its employees are interested in being involved in change processes and have the ability to influence such changes. It is therefore important that the leader of a proposed change has a good relationship with the employees and excellent communication skills in order to both inform and listen to them. It is also important to create a commitment to change if a change project is to be successful. Within Saab Aerosystems this commitment can be created by engaging informal leaders within the project team. These employees often have a big influence on the organization as well as good knowledge of the technology and their departments’ operations. It is also important to give the organization’s members time to think through and accept a change. Without this time, resistance towards a change project can otherwise be created due to lack of understanding for the change. To create commitment to a change, the employees must also feel that they can manage the change and the situation that comes after the change. It is therefore important that the organization’s employees receive the necessary tools and education in order to give them confidence and motivation to carry out, and be a part of, the change project.

A difficult aspect during a change project can be to anchor the change within the organization. At Saab Aerosystems, changes can be anchored by involving representatives from upper management in change projects. These persons must in their turn request work that has been achieved according to the results of the change and even more importantly ensure that the change is used even upon completion of the change project. Making these demands can motivate the line managers and other employees to work according to the change and prevent reverting to old work methods and models. Finally, it is important to measure the change project progress. Examples of measure variables that can be used are business cases, questionnaires and lessons learned. These general variables ought to be complemented by specific variables for the actual change.

In the quest for additional computational power to provide higher software performance, industry have shifted to multi-core processing units. At the same time, many existing applications still contain sequential software; in these cases, multi-core processors would not deeply improve performances and in general would be under-utilized since software running on top of them are not conceived to exploit parallelization. In this thesis we aim at providing a way to increase the performance of existing sequential software through parallelization and at the same time minimizing the cost of the parallelization effort. The contribution of this thesis is a generic parallelization method for introducing parallelization into sequential software using multi-core CPUs and GPUs. As a proof-of-concept we ran an experiment in industrial settings by applying the proposed parallelization method to an existing industrial system running sequential code. Additionally, we compare the method we propose to existing methods for parallelization.

This study assesses the impacts of the invasive oil-collecting bee Centris nitida on the established endemic mutualism between Byrsonima lucida and Centris errans its sole native pollinator. In natural pine rocklands and urban areas, I examined the breeding system of B. lucida, assessed the degree of its pollen limitations, and compared the key processes of pollination for the Centris bees. Breeding system results showed that B. lucida was self incompatible and pollinator dependent. Pollen limitation treatments suggested that B. lucida is pollen limited, regardless of the contributions of the invasive bee. The native bee had significantly higher visitation rates to B. lucida plants, but had a lower foraging rate and was the less efficient pollinator. The invasive bee appears to be more common in urban environments. Further understanding the nature of these novel relationships is vital for the conservation of B. lucida and integrity of pine rocklands.

Abstract:
Biological invasions represent both an urgent conservation problem and an opportunity to advance ecological theory. Development of pertinent research questions and proactive management strategies require knowledge of which introduced species are present and of spatiotemporal trends in the distribution of natives and invaders. In Chapter 2 we developed a quantitative framework to identify spreaders and decliners and estimate invasion chronologies based on a historical fish presence data set for upper and middle New River (UMNR) tributaries. Our framework accounts for spatiotemporal variability in sampling effort by aggregating presences by watershed and expressing range size as a function of the number of watersheds sampled per time period. The majority (55%) of fish species present in the study area were introduced, 51% of which were spreaders. Most spreaders (84%) appeared to be spreading exponentially. The rate of new introductions detected in the study area has slowed since the mid-20th century. Two natives, the mound-spawning bluehead chub Nocomis leptocephalus and its strong nest associate (reproductive mutualist), mountain redbelly dace Chrosomus oreas, were among the most rapid spreaders. Four natives showed evidence of decline. Our framework leverages historical presence data to reconstruct temporal trends in species distributions. It sets the stage for further study of factors driving stream fish invasions and declines in the Appalachian region, and is transferable to diverse taxonomic groups and geographic regions. Species traits and human activities mediating stream-fish invasions remain poorly understood. In Chapter 3 we modeled the contribution of species traits to invasion success of UMNR tributary fishes during the colonization and spread stages. Biological traits accurately explained colonization and spread success, whereas ecological traits resulted in less accurate models. Colonization success was positively related to time since introduction, benthic feeding, an equilibrium life history, and nest spawning. Successful spread was positively related to winter air temperature in the native range and an equilibrium life history. Variables estimating human use and propagule pressure were non-informative. Traits that influenced invasion success were consistent with the hypothesis that human land-use practices have increased the invasibility of highland watersheds by creating novel conditions suited to lowland and equilibrium invaders.
