Abstract:
Information Technology Management
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a prototype Client-Server application that can be used by selected Naval Postgraduate School staff-members to coordinate meeting agendas and travel plans. A prototype application that can be implemented and deployed on an organizational network was designed and developed using commercially available tools. The thesis also addresses the current computing problems confronting this institution and the reasons why corporate America is embracing Web-based intranet technology; it will also examine why a Web-based intranet is a viable solution for many of the computing problems facing this organization. Additionally, we examined other applications that can be developed and deployed on an intranet at the Naval Postgraduate School. Finally, we explore the renowned intranet at Sandia National Laboratories and explain which factors played the most significant role in the success they have achieved with intranet technology at their organization.

Resumo: A construção de sistemas baseados nas tecnologias Internet fez surgir um novo paradigma de desenvolvimento de software: o de sistemas Web. A demanda por sistemas Web foi impulsionada a partir da abertura da Internet ao uso comercial, quando o mercado passou a empregá-Ia como infra-estrutura para a distribuição de informações, aplicações e serviços aos seus funcionários (intranets), parceiros (extranets) e clientes (sites Internet). Entretanto, como a Internet não foi concebida para estas finalidades, foram lançadas inúmeras iniciativas no sentido de resolver suas deficiências. A tentativa de suprir a demanda do mercado por novas soluções Web resultou no surgimento de inúmeras tecnologias, marcadas pela complexidade e imaturidade. Estes fatores contribuiram para dificultar a tarefa de se construir aplicações Web de forma correta, eficiente, rápida e barata. Este trabalho analisa as dificuldades relacionadas ao desenvolvimento de software Web, e propõe alguns conceitos e ferramentas para facilitar as etapas de projeto e implementação. Com relação ao projeto de intranets apresentamos uma discussão sobre as oportunidades, as etapas e os recursos envolvidos. No contexto da implementação de sistemas Web, este trabalho contribui com uma discussão sobre as principais arquiteturas e tecnologias de implementação de software Web, com o desenvolvimento de quatro componentes de propósito geral, e umframework para o gerenciamento de documentos em intranets
Abstract: The development of Internet based systems has introdueed the paradigm of Web applieations. Sinee Internet was opened to the market, the demand for Web systems has inereased as a eonsequenee of using Internet as an infrastrueture to deploy information, applieations and serviees to employees (intranets), partners (extranets) and elients (Internet sites). On the other hand, sinee the Internet had not been eoneeived for these purposes, a lot of initiatives was launehed to bypass its deficienees. Aetually, while the market tried to supply the demand for new Web solutions, they did that in a manner that inereased the number of teehnologies, as well as the eomplexity and immaturity of eaeh one. These faetors eontributed to increase the difficulties in developing Web software in a eorreet, eficient, fast and eheap way. This projeet focuses on diffieulties related to the Web software development process, and proposes some eoncepts and tools to make the project and implementation tasks easier. At intranet planning, this work ean be used to define the common steps, resources, oportunities, services and applieations that an intranet must address. Concerning to implementing Web applieations, this work offers a proof of concept through development of four general purpose components and a framework for intranet doeument management built on top of these components

Abstract:
The research area of this master work is problems of information processing in County State Tax Inspectorate and their resolution approaches. The aim of this work is to find the best approach, to create appropriate software to resolve theses problems and to fulfill user’s needs. The main problems of information processing were determined during County State Tax Inspectorate business analysis: • usable legacy information systems imperfect integration and functionality; • some information not computerized processing. After analyzing many approaches three tiers client-server software architecture, internet technologies and relational databases integration was chosen for new information system implementation. Internet browser is used for user interface on client side. All business logic was placed in middle tier. Server side scripts are used for interaction with system new database and legacy database which is working in Oracle DBMS environment. Microsoft ASP technology is used for server-side scripting. Legacy database reverse engineering was accomplished for this database documentation. County State Tax Inspectorate intranet portal users can do data operative registration and processing, quick report formation. The modern CASE tool Rational Rose 2002 Enterprise Edition was used from business analysis to new information system project creation that will help for system maintenance and future development.

Desde la creación de las primeras computadoras, la necesidad por mejorar la interacción persona computador, se ha venido incrementando hasta convertirse en una disciplina. Desde entonces se ha venido desarrollando herramientas y técnicas que permitan mejorar la interacción entre persona y computador. Asimismo, el surgimiento de la World Wide Web, originó el desarrollo de distintos sistemas web que representan a las organizaciones ante diversos tipos de público. El presente proyecto pretende evaluar el sistema virtual de la PUCP, aplicando técnicas y herramientas que permitan evaluar la comunicabilidad y usabilidad, los mismos que han venido siendo aplicado en los últimos años por distintas empresas y organizaciones gubernamentales en todo el mundo. El resultado de esta investigación, no pretende dar las soluciones para resolver los problemas de diseño, sino dar soporte a los solucionadores de problemas en la generación de soluciones.

Esse trabalho visa desenvolver ferramentas para gerenciamento de uma rede IP de computadores. As ferramentas foram desenvolvidas para serem utilizadas por usuários com pouco conhecimento de redes de computadores e Unix. Para atingir essas metas o projeto selecionou os comandos do Unix necessários, mascarando-os através de ações específicas. Dessa forma foram disponibilizados os comandos mínimos necessários para um bom gerenciamento. O conjunto de ferramentas criado, denominado MSP, foi implantado em todas as Unimeds do estado de Santa Catarina para gerenciamento da UniRed. A UniRed é o nome da intranet das Unimeds de Santa Catarina
This work aims to develop tools to manage an IP network of computers. All tools were developed to be used by someone without extensive knowledge or background in computer networks or Unix. To achieve those goals, the project identified the required Unix commands and masked them behind specific procedures. This way, a set of tools becomes became available that enables good network management. The set of tools is named MSP and was used in all Unimeds in Santa Catarina/Brazil states managing the UniRed. Abstract:
Utilization of World Wide Web style Web-Based Intranet Systems (W-BIS) is a rapidly expanding information delivery technique in many organizations. Published reports concerning these systems have cited return on investment values exceeding 1300% and direct payback time periods as low as six to twelve weeks. While these systems have been widely implemented, little theoretically grounded research has been conducted in relation to users' acceptance, utilization or the perceived quality of these systems. The study employed a two-site investigation of corporate Web-Based Intranet Systems, with surveys distributed via the traditional mail system. The complete survey instrument distributed to employees included the ServQual/ServPerf, User Information Satisfaction, Ease of Use/Usefulness, and Computer Playfulness instruments. In addition to these previously developed instruments, the survey instrument for this study included measures of Web-Based Intranet Systems utilization and usefulness along with respondent demographics and subordinate-reported managerial commitment. This study investigated the reliability and validity of the ServQual/ServPerf instrument in an information systems service environment. The same analysis was conducted of the more generally accepted User Information Satisfaction instrument.

Abstract:

Intranets appeared in the mid-1990s and were perceived as the answer to the need for the integration of existing Information Systems into organisations. Despite the fact that there has been extensive research regarding implementation, development processes, policies standardisation vs. creativity and so forth, the potentiality of Intranets has not been fully exploited. Intranets offer many advantages in the form of working networks that support and enable empowered employees to participate in the development of the organisation, to enable the measurement of essential functions and to monitor undesired conditions and find suitable functions that support daily work. The research approach in this thesis has alternated between analysis empirical studies, and design. Current literature, research findings in the form of articles, etc., are analysed, an empirical study of five organisations is conducted and finally a design of possible functions is accomplished. In the analysis of the state-of-the-art, current research can be grouped into four topics partly overlapping each other; questions concerning informatics, organisation theory, knowledge management, and design. Urgent issues for further research are identified as mainly belonging to the topics informatics and organisation theory; management and strategy, empowerment, further development processes, use, and roles. Findings from a study of five Swedish organisations show a need for identifying the philosophy of technology in the organisations in order to make an organisation’s view of technology common throughout the organisation. Furthermore, functions supporting daily work are lacking to a high degree. Further lacks and demands are identified, as well as potential functions and new possibilities. In the next section, the Philosophy of Technology is related to an Intranet. The discussion is based on a model which consists of the concepts Conception, Use, Technology, and Policy. Making the Philosophy of Technology common in organisations is connected to the empowerment of employees and is a guarantor, along with the influence of the VSM on the design, for the impact on and participation in the processes of an organisation. The next part deals with possible advantages of combining the cybernetic model, the Viable System Model, by Stafford Beer, and an Intranet. It is found that the VSM can support the design of Intranets according to essential functions such as Early Warning Systems connected to production units and levels that are to be made aware of undesired conditions in the organisation. Furthermore, functions for amplifying and attenuating information – both between parts of the organisation and between the organisation and the environment – are to be designed. Further examples of functions supporting the organisation, in order to make it viable, are given. The main contribution of the thesis is the identification of core functions in an Intranet as establishing functions for supervision (Early Warning Systems), attenuating and amplifying information between the organisation and the environment and between subparts in the organisation. Furthermore, the interface is to be designed so the underlying technology is “visible:” Where are the different parts of the Intranet located physically? Who delivers information to the different parts? Who uses the functions? Who is responsible? The transparency of the interface makes the philosophy of technology visible throughout the organisation; the concepts are the same, the actual use is the same as the intended use, and policy is active and well known and finally, the possibilities and the limitations with/inherent to an Intranet are known among the users.

Finally, examples of further research are given – both as regards the implementation of Intranets based on the VSM design and as regards making the interface transparent.

Denna uppsats beskriver utvecklingen inom projektet att skapa en redesign av en intranätmall till företaget Circuit i Stockholm. Denna intranätmall representerar de intranät som företaget producerar och används för att sälja in intranät till nya kunder. På grund av att många uppdateringar och nya funktioner tillkommit i de senaste intranäten som levererats vill företaget uppdatera sin intranätmall och som en del i arbetet skapa en ny design till den. Det som levererades inom projektet var slutgiltiga Photoshopskisser med syftet att beskriva designen i detalj, samt påbörjad kodmässig implementering i front-end med hjälp av ramverk för responsiv design.
This report describes the the production within the project of creating a redesign of an intranet template for the digital full-service agency Circuit in Stockholm. This intranet template represents the intranets the company produces and is used as a demonstration of the services for new clients. Due to many updates and additions of functionalities in the newest delivered intranets, Circuit wants to update their template version and as a part of that work creating a new design for it. The deliveries in this project was several final Photoshop-sketches which described the design in detail, and initiated front-end implementations using frameworks for responsive design.

Les systemes de caches web mis en place par les administrateurs sont rarement optimaux. En effet, de trop nombreux parametres influent sur la performance du systeme pour pouvoir etre pris en compte lors d'une installation au juge. Pour concevoir rationnellement un systeme de caches, il faut definir une notion de qualite de service et considerer les specificites du trafic a gerer et des reseaux qui le supporteront. Les moyens a mettre en uvre sont egalement tres varies : il faut decider d'une architecture du systeme ; il faut choisir des politiques de remplacement, coherence et cooperation ; enfin, il faut dimensionner les caches, les durees de vie des documents, etc. L'approche defendue dans cette these repose sur la simulation basee sur des traces. La premiere etape consiste a definir l'objectif de l'optimisation grace a une fonction de cout. Cette fonction permet de quantifier la qualite de service qu'offre tel ou tel systeme de caches. Pour evaluer la fonction de cout d'un systeme, on commence par collecter des informations sur les schemas d'acces des utilisateurs ; ensuite un simulateur permet de rejouer in vitro les traces collectees, en interposant le systeme de caches a evaluer entre les clients et les serveurs. Une etude statistique sur les traces permet de degager un petit nombre d'architectures de systemes susceptibles d'offrir de bonnes qualites de service. Une fois ces architectures definies, le probleme se ramene a la minimisation d'une fonction a plusieurs variables ; des algorithmes d'optimisation permettent de determiner les valeurs ideales des variables, et donc de definir le systeme optimal.

Traditional reliable unicast protocols (e.g., TCP), known as sender-initiated schemes, do not scale well for one-to-many reliable multicast due mainly to implosion losses caused by excessive rate of feedback packets arriving from receivers. So, recent multicast protocols have been devised following the receiver- initiated approach: scalability (in terms of control traffic, protocol state and end-systems processing requirements) is achieved by making the sender independent from receivers; the sender does not know the membership of the destination group. However, this comes with a cost: the lack of knowledge about and control of receivers at the sender has negative implications with respect to throughput, network cost (bandwidth required), and degree of reliability offered to applications. This thesis follows an alternative approach: instead of adopting the receiver-initiated scheme, it greatly enhances the scalability of the sender-initiated scheme, by means of polling-based feedback and hierarchy. The resulting protocol is named PRMP: polling-based Reliable Multicast protocol. Its unique implosion avoidance mechanism polls receivers at carefully planned timing instants achieving a low and uniformly distributed rate of feedback packets. The sender retains controls of receivers: the main PRMP mechanisms are based on a one-to-many sliding window mechanism, which efficiently and elegantly extends the abstraction from reliable unicasting to reliable multicasting. The error control mechanism of PRMP incorporates the use of NACKs and selective, cumulative acknowledgment of packets; additionally, it can wait and judiciously decide between multicast and selective unicast retransmissions. The flow control mechanism prevents unnecessary losses caused by the overrunning of receivers, despite variations in round-trip times and application speeds. The scalability provided by the polling mechanism is further extended by an hierarchic organization to exploit distributed processing and local recovery: receivers are organized according to a tree-structure. However, unlike other tree-based protocols, PRMP is "fully-hierarchic": each parent node forwards data via multicast to its children, and retains/explores the control of and knowledge about its children while autonomously applying error, flow, congestion and session controls in the communication with them. Two congestion control mechanisms, one window-based and another rate-based, have been incorporated to PRMP. As shown through simulation experiments, the resulting protocol q,chieves high though put with cost- effective reliable multicasting. They also show the scalability and effectiveness of PRMP mechanisms. PRMP can achieve reliable multicast with the same kind of reliability guarantees provided by TCP but without incurring prohibitive costs in terms of network cost or recovery latency found in other protocols.

Ce travail aborde une thématique fondamentale en sciences de gestion : la problématique de l'évaluation des systèmes d'information, notamment l'intranet. Cependant, la mise en place d'un intranet semble très dispendieuse et les résultats, autres que techniques, ne sont pas facilement observables. Par conséquent, il faut disposer des éléments nécessaires pour démontrer et justifier auprès du top management que l'intranet est beaucoup plus qu'une simple technologique novatrice profitant de l'engouement des technologies de l'information. Ce travail porte sur une proposition d'un modèle théorique comportant des critères d'évaluation et des règles en tenant compte du contexte organisationnel dans lequel chaque infrastructure est enracinée. Pour l'atteindre, nous avons mené une recherche qualitative, inductive et exploratoire. Elle a été conduite en deux phases. Dans la première, une enquête a été réalisée selon les principes des études Delphi. Dans la seconde, une étude de cas a été menée auprès d'un organisme bancaire. Les résultats obtenus démontrent que l'évaluation de l'intranet est, en soi, un processus participatif, de construction sociale et tributaire d'un changement organisationnel approprié. Ce processus doit être mené selon les critères associés à deux dimensions majeures : la "dimension qualité" et la "dimension vertu". Chaque dimension est composée de zones d'évaluation. Les résultats obtenus des éléments essentiels permettant d'évaluer et surtout de favoriser le succès perçu de l'intranet qui dépend à la fois des caractéristiques techniques et sociales. Ce modèle constitue à la fois un apport théorique, mais aussi managérial puisque les banques disposent maintenant d'un instrument leur permettant de mesurer le succès de leur intranet. Ce travail souligne l'importance de certaines variables, et met en évidence des liaisons spécifiques au domaine bancaire
Today's intranet has become the backbone of an organization, having implemented this technology that is both unifying and transforming. This work addresses a fundamental topic in management science: the issue of the evaluation of information systems, including intranet. However, the implementation of an intranet seems to be very expensive, and the results of other techniques are not easily observable. Therefore, it must have the necessary elements to demonstrate and to justify to top management, that the intranet is much more than just an innovative technology solution, taking advantage of the popularity of information technology. This work is a proposal of a theoretical model with evaluation criteria and rules, taking into account the organizational context, in which each is rooted infrastructure. To achieve this, we conducted a qualitative, inductive and exploratory research. It was completed in two phases. In the first, a survey was regulated according to the principles of Delphi studies. In the second, a case study was administered with a banking institution. The results show that, the evaluation of the intranet is, in itself, a participatory process of social construction, and dependent on a suitable organizational change. This process must be carried out according to the criteria associated with two major dimensions: the "quality dimension" and "dimension virtue. " Each is composed of assessment areas. The results obtained provide essential elements to evaluate, and especially to favor the perceived success of the intranet, which depends on both technical and social aspects. This model is both a theoretical contribution, as well as a managerial one, since banks now have tools to measure the success of their intranet. O objetivo deste trabalho é contribuir para uma compreensão mais clara sobre o desenvolvimento de intranets e portais corporativos nas organizações, através da análise do principal determinante do sucesso desses projetos: o uso efetivo da tecnologia. Para atingir esse objetivo, esta pesquisa adota uma visão multidimensional, considerando tanto a perspectiva individual como a organizacional. O suporte teórico advém de extensa revisão das pesquisas já publicadas sobre o tema, compreendendo elementos retirados da teoria da estruturação de Giddens e de modelos consagrados de aceitação da tecnologia, como UTAUT e TAM. A metodologia consiste de estudo de caso em três organizações do setor público, com estruturas bastante semelhantes, mas que desenvolveram suas intranets de modo independente. A análise dos contextos organizacionais demonstrou que o uso da tecnologia nos casos estudados, na prática, ainda é muito limitado. Os resultados da pesquisa revelam que esse uso é resultado da conjunção de complexos elementos. Além das deficiências na funcionalidade da tecnologia, os indivíduos não reconheceram a utilidade prática das intranets e, do mesmo modo, não se sentem estimulados a usar a tecnologia. Essa realidade é consequência de problemas na gestão da tecnologia, como a falta de participação efetiva de setores estratégicos, que aliados a aspectos estruturais das organizações, como a divisão entre os setores e a acentuada especialização funcional, contribuem para a manutenção desse quadro. Em sua maioria, esses elementos constituem práticas já institucionalizadas nas organizações, reforçadas pelo comportamento de seus membros no fluir de suas interações.
The goal of this paper is to help provide a clearer understanding of the development of intranets and corporate portals in organizations, by examining the main determinant behind the success of these projects: the effective use of technology. To achieve this goal, this study uses a multidimensional approach, considering both the individual and organizational perspective. The theoretical support is based on an extensive review of already published research on the subject, including elements drawn from Gidden's theory of structuration and renowned technology acceptance models, such as UTAUT and TAM. The methodology consists of a case study in three public sector organizations, with very similar structures, but which developed their intranets independently. The analysis of the organizational contexts demonstrated that the use of technology in the cases studied is still, in practice, very limited. The research findings show that using it is the result of a complex conjunction of elements. Besides the shortcomings in the functionality of the technology, people have not recognized the usefulness of intranets and, likewise, do not feel attracted to use the technology. This reality is a consequence of problems in technology management, such as lack of effective participation of strategic sectors, which combined with structural aspects of organizations, like the division between sectors and accentuated job specialization, contribute toward maintaining this state of affairs. Most of these elements are already institutionalized practices in organizations, reinforced by the behavior of their members in the course of their interactions.

The proposal of this dissertation is to identify, to analyze and to reflect the use of the Technologies of the Communication and Information in the processes of organizational communication in the scope of the Theory of the Complexity in order to search, to little in latency, the structural corollaries of technological innovations that, in general way, had still not been analyzed in the ratio and intensity of the general volume of the changes and the material efforts already expensed in it, over all to what refers to aspects of the organizational culture. A proposta desta dissertação é identificar, analisar e refletir a utilização das Tecnologias da Comunicação e Informação nos processos de comunicação organizacional no âmbito da Teoria da Complexidade de modo a se buscar, ao menos em latência, os corolários estruturais de inovações tecnológicas que, de modo geral, ainda não foram analisadas na proporção e intensidade do caudal geral das mudanças e dos esforços materiais nelas já gastos, sobretudo no que se refere a aspectos da cultura organizacional. Para fundamentar nossas hipóteses, nos apoiamos em um estudo de caso de implantação de uma intranet, ou seja, de um portal corporativo. Para tanto, nos valemos de alguns dos mais consistentes estudiosos do espaço virtual, como Pierre Lévy e dos pensadores da Teoria da Complexidade enquanto pano de fundo teórico que pudesse conferir às nossas reflexões a sustentação metodológica suficiente para nos permitir pensar as organizações no difícil enquadramento e dinâmica deste nosso momento de mutações e imprevisibilidade.

The researchs objective is to analyze the existing relations between intranet and portal adoption and knowledge management practices. The research model proposes a combination of the KMMM model (Knowledge Management Maturity Model) with the Knowing Organization model (CHOO, 1998), and brings into portals context the constructs of two validated models of information systems evaluation: TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) and TTF (Task-Technology Fit). The model also comprises technological features of intranets and portals and the organizational support issues. The research model investigates the influences of knowledge management maturity and skill management on sense-making, knowledge creation and decision-making processes. Intranet managers and knowledge management leaders were the main focus of the survey that was answered by 168 organizations (98 from Brazil and 70 from Portugal). The data analysis allowed the validation of the Knowing Organization model (CHOO, 1998), and a better understanding of the relationships between intranets features and knowledge management. This work contains advices to intranet managers and knowledge management leaders, contributing for a proper usage of information technology as a leverage of knowledge management initiatives.
O objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar as relações existentes entre a adoção de intranets e portais corporativos e as práticas de gestão do conhecimento. O modelo de pesquisa propõe uma combinação do modelo KMMM (Knowledge Management Maturity Model) com o modelo de Organização do Conhecimento (CHOO, 1998) e traduz para o contexto dos portais os construtos de dois modelos genéricos de avaliação de sistemas de informação já validados: TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) e TTF (Task-Technology Fit). O modelo leva em consideração tanto as características técnicas das intranets e portais quanto os aspectos organizacionais de apoio. Busca-se também investigar as influências da maturidade em gestão do conhecimento e da gestão de competências nos processos de construção de sentido, criação do conhecimento e tomada de decisão. Os gestores das intranets e líderes de programas de gestão do conhecimento de médias e grandes organizações constituíram o público alvo da pesquisa, da qual participaram 168 organizações (98 brasileiras e 70 portuguesas). A análise dos dados permitiu a validação do modelo da Organização do Conhecimento (CHOO, 1998) e um melhor entendimento das relações entre as características das intranets e a gestão do conhecimento. O trabalho contém recomendações para os gestores das intranets e líderes de gestão do conhecimento, buscando assim contribuir para o uso adequado da Tecnologia da Informação como uma aliada das iniciativas de gestão do conhecimento.

A partir da década de 1990, a informação passa a ser central dentro das grandes corporações. Estas são portanto levadas a fazer uso de redes internas - as Intranets - para organizar o fluxo de informação. Este estudo teve como objetivo saber como os executivos, que delas fazem uso, a elas estão reagindo. Os resultados indicam que, apesar de serem percebidas como ferramentas que democratizam e fazem fluir as informações pela teia organizacional, as Intranets também geram novas formas de visibilidade e de controle.
Since the 1990`s, information has become central inside big companies. The latter were thus led to make use of internal nets - the Intranets - in order to organize the flow of information. The present investigation aimed at finding out how the executives that use Intranets react to them. Results suggest that, even though they emerged as tools that make knowledge and information flow more democraticly inside the company, the Intranets also generate new forms of visibility and control.

Cependant, la notion d'autonomie reste mal conceptaullisée en sciences de gestion. C'est pouquoi nous nous tournons vers diverses sciences pour lesquelles l'autonomie est une notion centrale depuis longtemps : la biologie, la physiologie, la génétique, l'éthologie, les sciences cognitives, la psychologie, la psychiatrie, la sociologie, la cybernétique et la science des systèmes, afin de dégager le sens profond de cette notion, d'ne préciser les contours et d'en proposer une définition. Ensuite, à partir d'une recherche-observation réalisée dans une entreprise du second oeuvre du bâtiment, nous mettons en évidence les implications potentielles, organisationnelles et humaines, de la mise en oeuvre d'une stratégie d'autonomisation-mise en réseau des acteurs dans l'entreprise. Economy aims to intelligence development nowadays. Companies are more and more induced to apply the methods and tools dedicated to competitive intelligence and a quality continuous education of their employees. Taking into account the characteristics of the printed circuit board industry as well as the size of Automa-Tech, I faced the problematics of a multinational company with the capabilities of a high-tech SME. I applied a strategy based on the training of the whole personnel to make them aware of the information gathering and security for the company, the sales agencies abroad as well as on free sources and web tools. A strong support of the Ministry of Research helped me to build up an intranet of strategic watch. The use of the statistical technology combined with a permanent feedback of the users has given good results

The process of organising, preparing and conducting a meeting is a time consuming one. Additionally, geographic separation compounds the amount of effort required. Within this study, an electronic conferencing system in an Intranet environment is designed and implemented, thus enabling employees in the same organisation to meet up electronically without the dual constraints of time and space. The results demonstrate that a presence of facial expressions helps users to better engage in on-line discussion and that users find an ongoing poll to be useful in determining direction within an electronic meeting.

The purpose of the research is to establish what modern services of internet can be successfully used to create intranet and extranet in school. After analyzing the theory, the know – haw of creating intranet ant extranet in foreign countries and Lithuania, it is established that the following services can be used in optimum case: the services of information safeguarding; the services of files and catalogues are used for placing educational material and holding educational process, especially for work in group or individual work; the services of rendering information for the review and search of information; the services of sending reports – e-mail, forums; the services of net data bases. Orientated for educational process; the services of information exchange and distant approach, that is FTP and other services based on other minutes and possibilities of operating systems and services based on distant control. Modern distant educational medium realizes and holds the majority of services mentioned above, connected to information exchange and its saving. Abstract:
The twenty-first century has found education at the crossroads of change. There are burgeoning challenges facing the modern educator. To rise to the importuning, educators find themselves turning to Information Technology for the answers. The technologies utilised in attempts to overcome the challenges often include the Internet and electronic educational resources. Although the Internet is not unduly called the Information Highway, it is also fraught with misleading and incorrect information. Educators’ arduous searches result in few good and useable resources. Thus, to store, organise and efficiently retrieve the discovered resources is a matter of time-saving. The aim of the study was to develop a method to organise and retrieve educational resources in an efficient and personalised manner. In order to do this, an exploration into pedagogy and educational paradigms was undertaken. The current educational paradigm, constructivism, proposes that each learner is an individual with unique learning and personal needs. To develop a new model, the current models need to be understood. The current solutions for the organising of educational resources are realised as several software packages, also called e-learning packages. A list of criteria that describes the essential requirements for organising educational resources was established. These criteria were based upon the pedagogical principles prescribed by educators and the practical technological frameworks necessary to fulfil the needs of the teaching/learning situation. These criteria were utilised to critique and explore the available solutions. It was found that although the available e-learning packages fulfil a need within their genre, it does not meet with the core requirements of constructivism. The resource base model seeks to address these needs by focussing on the educational aspects of resource delivery over an Intranet. For the purposes of storing, organising and delivering the resources, a database had to be established. This database had to have numerous qualities, including the ability to search and retrieve resources with great efficiency. Retrieving data in an efficient manner is the forte of the star schema, while the storing and organising of data is the strength of a normalised schema. It is not standard practice to utilise both types of schemas within the same database. A star schema is usually reserved for data warehouses because of its data retrieval abilities. It is customary to utilise a normalised schema for operational databases. The resource base model, however, needs both the storage facilities of an operational database and the efficient query facilities of a data warehouse. The resource base model, therefore, melds both schemas into one database with interlinking tables. This database forms the foundation (or the back-end) of the resource base. The resource base model utilises web browsers as its user interface (or front-end). The results of the study on the pedagogy, the current e-learning solutions and the resource base were written up within this dissertation. The contribution that this dissertation makes is the development of a technique to efficiently store, organise and retrieve educational resources in such a manner that both the requirements of constructivism and outcomes-based education are fulfilled. To this end, a list of technological and pedagogical criteria on which to critique a resource delivery technique has been developed. This dissertation also elaborates on the schema designs chosen for the resource base, namely the normalised schema and the star schema. From this schema, a prototype has been developed. The prototype’s function was two-fold. The first function is to determine the feasibility of the technique. Tous ces domaines de recherche combinés favorisent la réalisation de cours mis sur logiciels ou en applications qui peuvent être diffusés sur l'Internet ou en Intranet dans les systèmes scolaires. Cette avancée dans l'éducation musicale se constate partout dans le monde et nous présentons dans cette thèse l'ensemble des éléments nécessaires au progrès de l'enseignement à distance de la musique dans les établissements scolaires de haut niveau et auprès d'un large public. Pour mener à bien cette étude nous avons créé le laboratoire franco-québécois LAMUSADI qui a permis la mise en œuvre de différents cours de musique à distance, élaborés à partir du programme d’enseignement des Conservatoires de musique du Québec
Musical e-learning is nowadays possible since the development of the technologies as the standard MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), which allow communication between computers and musical instruments, Internet, Web and multimedia tools. All those components combined together help to produce musical courses on CDs and software, which can be performed on Internet or Intranet of musical institutions. This progress in musical education can be observed all over the world and we will see the components and elements available to create qualified musical e-learning which can be applied in schools and to a large audience. To help us in our Study, the french and canadian Laboratory LAMUSADI has been created allowing us to realize different musical courses based on the musical teaching programm of the Quebec Musical Conservatories
