Abstract:
Intra4×4 mode decision has correlation between enhancement layer and base layer in scalable video coding (SVC). In this paper, a new intra mode decision algorithm is proposed based on this correlation and the proximity of prediction directions of nine Intra4×4 prediction modes. This method is used in enhancement layer to decrease the mode numbers in enhancement layer. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm can save 27.52% encoding time on average with negligible PSNR change and small bit-rate loss.

Abstract:
Abstract AVS3 is the latest generation of video coding standard developed independently by China. It obtains 50% bitrate savings under the same visual quality as compared with the previous generation coding standard AVS2, largely due to availability of numerous new coding tools. However, these newly introduced coding tools increase the computational complexity significantly and thus severely hinder the real applications of AVS3. In light of the above, this paper presents an innovative fast intra mode decision method that exploits texture information. In particular, for each Prediction Unit (PU), the Sobel operator is employed to obtain the gradient information, which helps to produce candidate intra prediction modes. In addition, to trade off coding efficiency against computational complexity, the PU content flatness is exploited to determine the number of candidate modes. The proposed method is implemented on HPM-4.0.1, and the experimental results demonstrate that it obtains 35.2% encoding time saving with moderate compression performance loss.

Abstract:
With the advancement of network technology, multimedia videos have emerged as a crucial channel for individuals to access external information, owing to their realistic and intuitive effects. In the presence of high frame rate and high dynamic range videos, the coding efficiency of high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) falls short of meeting the storage and transmission demands of the video content. Therefore, versatile video coding (VVC) introduces a nested quadtree plus multi-type tree (QTMT) segmentation structure based on the HEVC standard, while also expanding the intra-prediction modes from 35 to 67. While the new technology introduced by VVC has enhanced compression performance, it concurrently introduces a higher level of computational complexity. To enhance coding efficiency and diminish computational complexity, this paper explores two key aspects: coding unit (CU) partition decision-making and intra-frame mode selection. Firstly, to address the flexible partitioning structure of QTMT, we propose a decision-tree-based series partitioning decision algorithm for partitioning decisions. Through concatenating the quadtree (QT) partition division decision with the multi-type tree (MT) division decision, a strategy is implemented to determine whether to skip the MT division decision based on texture characteristics. If the MT partition decision is used, four decision tree classifiers are used to judge different partition types. Secondly, for intra-frame mode selection, this paper proposes an ensemble-learning-based algorithm for mode prediction termination. Through the reordering of complete candidate modes and the assessment of prediction accuracy, the termination of redundant candidate modes is accomplished. Experimental results show that compared with the VVC test model (VTM), the algorithm proposed in this paper achieves an average time saving of 54.74%, while the BDBR only increases by 1.61%.

Abstract:
The brute-force behaviour of High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the biggest hurdle in the communication of the multimedia contents. Therefore, a novel method will be presented here to expedite the intra mode decision process of HEVC. In the first step, the feasibility of the odds-algorithm for the early intra mode decision is presented by using statistical evidence. Then, various elements of odds algorithm are analyzed and then mapped to the intra mode process (elements) of HEVC. Finally, the probability required by the odds algorithm is obtained by utilizing the correlation between the current and the neighboring blocks. The proposed algorithm accelerated the encoding process of the HEVC by 25% to 35%, while the Bjontegaard Delta Bit Rate (BD-BR) is 0.95% to 1.84%.

Abstract:
Multiview video plus depth (MVD), which consists of a texture image and its associated depth map, has been introduced as a 3D video format, and 3D video coding, such as 3D-HEVC, was developed to efficiently compress this MVD data. However, this requires high encoding complexity because of the additional depth coding. In particular, intra coding using various prediction modes is very complicated. To reduce the complexity, we propose a fast depth intra mode decision method based on mode analysis. The proposed method adaptively reduces the number of original candidate modes in a mode decision process. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves high performance in terms of the complexity reduction.

Abstract:
In mid-2020, the new international video coding standard, namely versatile video coding (VVC), was officially released by the Joint Video Expert Team (JVET). As its name indicates, the VVC enables a higher level of versatility with better compression performance compared to its predecessor, high-efficiency video coding (HEVC). VVC introduces several new coding tools like multiple reference lines (MRL) and matrix-weighted intra-prediction (MIP), along with several improvements on the block-based hybrid video coding scheme such as quatree with nested multi-type tree (QTMT) and finer-granularity intra-prediction modes (IPMs). Because finding the best encoding decisions is usually preceded by optimizing the rate distortion (RD) cost, introducing new coding tools or enhancing existing ones requires additional computations. In fact, the VVC is 31 times more complex than the HEVC. Therefore, this paper aims to reduce the computational complexity of the VVC. It establishes a large database for intra-prediction and proposes a multitask learning (MTL)-based intra-mode decision framework. Experimental results show that our proposal enables up to 30% of complexity reduction while slightly increasing the Bjontegaard bit rate (BD-BR).

Abstract:
In inter-frame coding of H.264/AVC standard, not only seven inter-partition modes but also intra-modes are taken into account for seeking the best coding mode so as to maintain higher encoding efficiency by sacrificing the speed of H.264/AVC encoder. Aiming at intra-skip, this paper proposes a novel mathematical model for intra-skip in inter-frame coding to alleviate the complexity of the process; the model provides remarkable performance increment by cutting down encoding time while accompanying very minor bitrate increase. The critical advantage of this proposed scheme most emphasized on is that it can optimize H.264 encoder in conjunction with any proposed fast inter- and intra-methods which are focusing on inter-partition mode decision, motion search algorithms, and fast intra-algorithms.

Abstract:
Abstract High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) employs quadtree coding tree unit (CTU) structure to improve its coding efficiency, but at the same time, it requires a very high computational complexity due to its exhaustive calculating process to find the optimal prediction mode for the current CU (Coding Unit). Aiming to solve the problem, a fast intra mode prediction decision algorithm based on neighborhood grouping is presented for HEVC in this article. The contribution of this article lies in the fact that the authors successfully use the neighborhood grouping technology to rapidly find the optimal prediction mode for the current CU, which can significantly reduce computation complexity for HEVC. Specifically, they use the correlative information of adjacent angle prediction mode in their first scheme to quickly reduce the number of Rough Mode Decision (RMD); then they use the correlation between Most Probable Mode (MPM) and the first candidate mode selected as the optimal prediction mode to quickly determine the number of candidate modes; at last, they quickly find the optimal prediction mode with the minimum Rate Distortion Cost (RDCost) by using neighborhood grouping technology or direct calculation approach based on the number of candidate modes. As a result, their proposed algorithm can efficiently solve the problem above. The simulation results show that our proposed intra mode prediction decision algorithm based on neighborhood grouping in this article can reduce about 22.3% computational complexity on average only at a cost of 0.03% bit rate increase and 0.26% PSNR decline compared with the standard reference HM16.1 algorithm.

Abstract:
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the next generation video coding standard. In HEVC, 35 intra prediction modes are defined to improve coding efficiency, which result in huge computational complexity, as a large number of prediction modes and a flexible coding unit (CU) structure is adopted in CU coding. To reduce this computational burden, this paper presents a gradient-based candidate list clipping algorithm for Intra mode prediction. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce 29.16% total encoding time with just 1.34% BD-rate increase and –0.07 dB decrease of BD-PSNR.
