The object of the dissertation is a genre still obscure to the literary studies and criticism: the interview. The project recovers ten interviews made by Peregrino Júnior with ten members of the Brazilian Academy of Letters about the futurist movement and the modernist innovations. We include also one unpublished interview of Gilberto Mendonça Teles with Peregrino Júnior, commenting, twenty years later, the collection the literary moment. Besides the analysis of the unpublished material, we develop the project in order to present the scholars the theorization thoughts that try to define and to delimit the literary interview, observing its evolution since the latest nineteenth century until the beginning of our twenty first century.

Abstract:
Class of 2015 Abstract
Objectives: To determine if students who participated in mock interviews will have better interviewing skills/performance and be more likely to be offered a second interview than students who did not participate. Methods: A hybrid survey approach was used. During Career Day, students were given a packet consisting of a consent form, demographics questionnaire, and multiple recruiter questionnaire forms. Recruiter ratings and student demographics were paired up and analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. The outcomes measured were ratings of the student’s interviewing performance, student’s confidence, and the likelihood of a second interview. Results: Students without prior mock interview experience received lower recruiter ratings than students with interview experience, but the results were not statistically significant (3.5 in no mock interview arm vs. 3.757 in mock interview arm for interview responses, [p=0.394]; 3.796 in no mock interview arm vs. 4.0 in mock interview arm for confidence ratings, [p=0.781]; and 3.714 in no mock interview arm vs. 3.59 in mock interview arm for likelihood of being offered a second interview [p=0.69]). Conclusions: Students who participated in mock interviews had higher interview ratings and were more likely to be offered a second interview when compared to students who do not have prior interview training, however, the association was not statistically significant. Students who have or have had prior work experience had significantly better interviewing skills/performance and were more likely to be offered a second interview compared to students who did not work while in pharmacy school.

Condon, Emily. "The Effects of Interview Length on Gender and Personality Related Bias in Job Interviews." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/536.

Full text
Abstract:
The proposed study explores the cognitive miser approach to perception formation in job interviews, as well as factors that may motivate people to not act as cognitive misers. Personality type (introverted and extraverted) and gender are characteristics of people that are associated with many stereotypes (Heilman, 2001; Andersen & Klatzky, 1987), and can have a large influence on an employer’s perception of an applicant, particularly when the employer is acting as a cognitive miser. It is hypothesized that in longer interviews, employers will be motivated to not act as cognitive misers, because they have more information about the applicant, have more of an opportunity to disconfirm any biases they may hold about the applicant, and experience greater liking toward the applicant. To test this, participants will conduct interviews with job applicants (who are actually confederates) and rate their perceptions of the applicants’ expected job performance. Participants will either conduct a long or short interview with a male introvert, a female introvert, a male extravert, or a female extravert. Job applicants will provide participants with the same information, although the information about personality type and the amount of information given will depend on the condition. It is predicted that participants who conduct shorter interviews will rate the applicants in line with popular stereotypes that favor extraverts over introverts, and males over females. Conversely, participants in longer interviews will be motivated to thoroughly think through their evaluations of the applicants, and there will be no significant difference in their ratings of male extraverts, female extraverts, male introverts, and female introverts.

Octopuses are extraordinary creatures: Despite their numerous biological divergences from humans, they display impressive intelligence. Aquarists and scientists alike have noted instances of octopuses having what appear to be personalities, and some (Roland Anderson and Jennifer Mather) have gone so far as to propose that octopuses are just as capable of having personalities as humans. There has been significant push-back from ethologists (Roger Hanlon and David Sinn) who instead say that this is the result of projection, and that animal behavior science ought to take a more quantitative and experimental approach to studies of behavior. The case of the octopus is a valuable opportunity to consider how we as humans go about observing animal behavior. The contentious debate over whether to apply human terms like personality to animals may ultimately tell us more about the nature of humans as observers than the animals themselves. Octopuses provide a philosophical mirror by which we can consider our propensity to look at the world through a decidedly human lens.

Diffey, Keith Russell. "The teacher appraisal interview." Thesis, Open University, 1991. http://oro.open.ac.uk/57320/.

Full text
Abstract:
Teacher appraisal is one of the key educational issues of the 1980s and 1990s. Developments have been-taking place at both national and local levels, and in the near future, many schools will be obliged to adopt some form of appraisal system. In setting the context for this research, attention is drawn to the purposes and types of appraisal, its major benefits and drawbacks, and the common features of existing schemes. Most teacher appraisal schemes maýe the appraisal "interview" the focal activity, and therefore the effectiveness of the system, is dependent upon the quality of the interaction during the interview itself. Thus, the central aim of this research is to find out more about what goes on in such meetings. In one school eleven case-study appraisal interviews were audio-taped, and intensive analysis of both "content" and "process" was applied. The methodology employed is primarily qualitative and interpretive in nature. Each interview is described in detail, making extensive use of quotations where necessary. The evaluation of each encounter provides valuable insights into the behaviour of participants. Semi-structured interviews with staff from the study school afford additional data. A number of generalities and issues emerge, in relation to both interview content and process. The results are enhanced by making use of certain theoretical concepts from the science of social psychology, including role theory, social psychological orientations, and interactionist perspectives. The implications of this research are considered, in particular the need to train staff in the skills of appraisal interviewing. The characteristics of 'good practice' in a teacher appraisal interview are also discussed. It is concluded that the behaviour of participants in a teacher appraisal interview is a function of role, relationship, personality, and the intricacies of transactional processes. A dramaturgical perspective provides an appropriate language for describing typical interview behaviour. A typology of teacher appraisal interviews is also developed.

Adamson, John. "Revisiting interview data : analysing turn-taking in interviews with Thai participants through 'layers of insight'." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/30989.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has investigated a small number of transcribed interviews taken from an educational setting in Thailand. It has shown how systems of coding spoken discourse can be used to interpret that data but has also stressed the necessity to employ tools of analysis, especially those which carry Thai-specific means of assessment, to gain better insights into the turn-taking behaviour. In this respect, it is a multi-layered investigation into intercultural communication, employing what I have termed as 'layers of insight' for that process of interpretation. The research undertaken also has an added element of using data which was originally collected for the purpose of investigating learning strategies. This is in contrast to the present objective of looking at how the interviews themselves were constructed by both participants. I have argued that this 'double focus' requires the researcher to carry forward the contextual information about the participants and interview as a speech event to the present research in order to help better interpret the data. This process has been useful, but, at times, prone to some overlap and redundancy. In order to organize the multitude of 'layers' and potential insights into the turn-taking of the interviews, much emphasis has been placed upon the methodological process streamlined into two steps. The results of the data analysis have revealed that the turn-taking coding system requires further experimentation and that a future 'revisiting' of the data may require careful re-organising of the 'layers of insight', but also that there is much potential in the combination of contextual information in those layers with the detailed codification system.

The success of a candidate in a job interview largely depends on the interviewee s background knowledge about the activity and on the competences and skills in managing the relationship with the interviewer and his self-presentation. In this research, we seek to contribute to the description of some manifestations of this type of interactional expertise, building knowledge of practical relevance for both the interviewer and for those involved in the training of professionals. Based on studies about rhetorical discourse analysis, three interviews of candidates to a job opportunity in a transnational corporation were analyzed. The research shows that candidates differ in their level of interactional expertise, concerning the understanding of the goals of the interviewer s contributions and of the interviewee s role; the ability to make a self-presentation according to the company values and job requirements; and convincingly make claims of competences and skills tested by the interviewer.

Full text
Abstract:
This is exploratory research which employs qualitative interview techniques that are built on the foundation of Dooyeweerd's Aspects (1984), which is facilitated here by the Multi-Aspectual Knowledge Elicitation (M.A.K.E) model (Winfield 2(00)) and led to the design and application of the Multi-Aspectual Interview Technique (M.A.I.T). This study began when the researcher saw an anomaly in mature students who study information technology as they have decided to study a subject for which their time in mandatory state education has provided no foundation of knowledge. Even though this is true, it should be noted that information technology (I.T.) is categorised by the Education and Skills Council as one of the preferred subjects for mature students (Ross 2(02)). The information collected for this project was arrived at by carrying out interviews of mature students studying for an information technology (I.T) information systems (I.S.) degree at a North-West university, and mature students studying a health care/nursing, access to university course of which I.T. is a mandatory part (in the form of the ECDL qualification - European Computer Driving licence). The second group were studying at a North-West Further Education college. This research is an exploration of the experiences of these two groups of mature students in education. However, the unexpected challenge of how to uncover their experiences soon made itself an equal focus of the research. Having found and applied a format (Dooyeweerd's Suite of Aspects) to guide the collection of everyday experience, the research produced a range of information about the experiences of people who have both specifically decided to study I.T. and those who have found themselves studying I.T. as a mandatory part of another course. Equally represented here is an assessment of how Dooyeweerd's Suite of Aspects (1984) facilitates qualitative research interviews.

Abstract:

The police interview is one of the most important investigative tools that law enforcement has close at hand, and police interview methods have changed during the twentieth century. A good police interview is conducted in the frame of the law, is governed by the interview goal, and is influenced by facilitating factors that may affect the elicited report. The present doctoral dissertation focuses on police interviews in cases of very serious crimes of violence and sexual offences. Results reveal crime victims’ and perpetrators’ experiences of being interviewed and police officers’ attitudes towards conducting interviews related to traumatizing crimes. Study 1 revealed that when police officers interviewed murderers and sexual offenders, the interviewees perceived attitudes characterized by either dominance or humanity. Police interviews marked by dominance and suspects’ responses of anxiety were mainly associated with a higher proportion of denials, whereas an approach marked by humanity, and responses of being respected were significantly associated with admissions. In line with Study 1, the victims of rape and aggravated assault in Study 2 also revealed the experience of two police interview styles, where an interviewing style marked by dominance and responses of anxiety was significantly associated with crime victims’ omissions of information. Moreover, a humanitarian interviewing style, and crime victims’ feelings of being respected and co-operative, was significantly related to crime victims providing all information from painful events. Special squad police officers’ attitudes towards interviewing crime victims, in Study 3, also showed a humanitarian approach and two dominant approaches, one affective and the other refusing. The attitude towards interviewing suspects of crimes in focus revealed humanitarian and dominant interviewing attitudes, and an approach marked by kindness. The present thesis shows that, during their entire career, an overwhelming majority of the special squad police officers have experienced stressful events during patrol as well as investigative duty. Results show that symptoms from stressful event exposures and coping mechanisms are associated with negative attitudes towards interviewing suspects and supportive attitudes towards crime victim interviews. Thus, experiences from stressful exposures may automatically activate ego-defensive functions that automatically generate dominant attitudes. Moreover, it is important to offer police officers who have been exposed to stressful events the opportunity to work through their experiences, for example, through debriefing procedures. After debriefings, police officers are better prepared to meet crime victims and suspects and, through conscious closed-loop processes, to conduct police interviews without awaking ego-defensive functions.

Hauptfleisch, Daniel Benjamin. "The moderating effect of interview structure on race-group similarity effects in simulated interview ratings." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/20166.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigated race-group similarity effects as a form of interviewer bias in selection interview ratings. Social Identity Theory predicts that interviewers would assign higher ratings to interviewees of the same social group (the so-called in-group) primarily through the mechanism of similarity attraction. Research findings up to now have lent only partial support to this hypothesis. This study argues that interview structure may help to explain inconsistent research findings since structure could inhibit the functioning of the similarity-attraction mechanism. The present research pursued two objectives, namely (1) to determine the degree to which race-group similarity (between interviewer and interviewee) exerts a biasing effect on selection interview dimension ratings, (2) to determine whether same-group bias increases when interview structure is experimentally diminished. This experimental study manipulated the degree of structure in interviews (high- and low-structured conditions) and compared the degree to which race group similarity effects were evident under each condition. Interviews were simulated by showing video-taped interview segments to a sample of participants and asking them to rate interview dimensions on rating scales that had been compiled to reflect the degree of structure in each condition. The data were analysed using Hierarchical Linear Modelling (HLM) and multiple regression analysis to determine whether similarity effects were present in the interview rating data. The results support the hypothesis that racial similarity effects are found under low-structured conditions, as well as the hypothesis that interview structure moderates the influence of similarity effects. However, racial similarity effects were also found with the highly structured condition. Although these effects were smaller than in the low-structured condition, they were statistically significant. Future research should attempt to replicate this study as a field study to test the generalisability of the findings.

Abstract:

In this study we have investigated the news interview both from the perspective of the journalists and of the subjects of the interview.

We have made interviews with 50 persons who participated as sources in the news and with 21 journalist who wrote the articles in the local newspapers Östran and Barometern in Kalmar, the 21 of November 2008.

The journalists were asked to tell their story of how the articles where produced, how they prepared before the interviews, if they had an image of the articles in advance and if they were satisfied with the outcome of the article. The persons who had been interviewed were asked to tell us how they felt about the interviews, if they were satisfied with the outcome of the article, if they could consider being in the newspaper again and to give their opinion of local journalism.

Most of the persons who had been quoted in the articles said that at least one or two things went wrong in the articles. Despite this they would not hesitate to be interviewed the newspaper again.

Surprising for us was to see how often the journalists get “served” with both the news and the subjects of the interview. It was for an example often that the Journalists visited press conferences and wrote articles from press releases. When the journalists produced news in this way, they simply interviewed those present at the press conference or the contact person in the press release

Abstract:

The study is focused on the interactional strategies used by interviewees in radio discourse, which are face-saving, relationship-securing and cooperative strategies. The interviewees’ speech is analysed according to their use of the selected discourse operators, which are the hedge you know, the personal pronoun you, personal address as well as greeting questions, information-seeking, reassuring and tag-questions. The results turned out to be almost similar to previous research. The face-saving strategy is shown to be male-dominant, while the relationship-securing and the cooperative strategies proved to have female dominance. The results are contrasted and reviewed by using two different kinds of normalization. The normalization is done both according to the percentage of the selected items and the percentage of the space used for every selected item and strategy.

Abstract:
Psychological studies have frequently demonstrated that a range of factors can affect eyewitnessing behavior. These studies, however, have tended to use 'mock' witnesses who are confronted with highly specific types of incident often under non-emotional conditions. The consequent findings seldom have applicability beyond those artificial situations created in the laboratory. More importantly, perhaps, is the fact that these findings have little probative value to a court of law even though the experiments may have been designed with this in mind. The empirical work reported in this thesis investigates whether an alternative methodology to laboratory studies could produce findings that would have useful and probative value to the courts. And, if not, it addresses the question as to where the emphases in psycholegal research should be placed in future. Archival data derived from statements given to the police by witnesses to actual crimes were used. These indicated that the value of eyewitness research to the problems of determining the reliability of an eyewitness's evidence in court is dubious. It is argued, therefore, that such findings would be better applied to the pre- and post-court stages of the legel system and, in particular, to the development of police interviewing techniques. Two factors (identified from the archival research) were examined in depth under laboratory conditions to establish their usefulness in the police interview where the completeness and accuracy of report is of paramount importance. The implications of the findings presented and their usefulness to psycholegal research and police practices were discussed. It was concluded that the use of both archival- and laboratory-basedinvestigations could help to identify the strengths and weaknesses present in psycholegal research. Also, a change in emphasis from the problems of the courts to the problems associated with the gathering of evidence may mean progressively less criticism from the legal profession regarding the credibility of psycholegal research.

Levine, Anne B. "The Structured Employment Interview: An Examination of Construct and Criterion Validity." The University of Waikato, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2288.

Full text
Abstract:
This study extends the literature on interview validity by attempting to create a structured employment interview with both construct- and criterion-related validity. For this study, a situational interview was developed with the specific purpose of enhancing the interview's construct validity while retaining the interview's predictive power. To enhance the construct validity, two guidelines were applied to the creation of the interview based on previous research in interview and assessment center literature limit the number of applicant characteristics to be rated to 3; and (2) ensure that the dimensions to be measured are conceptually distinct. Based on these two guidelines, three constructs were chosen for assessment of real estate sales agents extraversion, proactive personality and customer orientation. The critical incident technique was used to develop six interview items. To test the construct validity of the interview, the six items were correlated with other measures, specifically, self-report questionnaires and managers' ratings, of extraversion, proactivity and customer orientation. Correlations were weak, at best (rs ranged from -.06 to .25). To test the predictive validity of the interview, the six items were correlated with both objective and subjective measures of performance. Predictive validities were stronger, ranging from .23 to .30. These findings are consistent with previous research on employment interviews which have found that although the predictive validity of the interview is strong, the construct validity is very weak, leaving researchers to wonder what it is that the interview is actually measuring. Possible explanations for these findings are offered, and the implications of these findings are discussed.

Hood, Eileen M. "An evaluation of interview training for adolescents." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1987. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6321/.

Full text
Abstract:
The effectiveness of interview training was investigated in a study involving seventy-two lesser-qualified school-leavers, allocated to the following groups: (1) interview training (IVT); (2) interview training + videotape feedback (IVT + Video); (3) videotape feedback - 3 sessions (3 Video); (4) videotape feedback - 1 session (1 Video); (5) discussion (3 Disc.); (6) handout (Handout); (7) attention-only control (Att.C). For the IVT group a combination of modelling, coaching, roleplay, feedback and discussion was used to train both verbal and non-verbal interview skills in 3 sessions. This programme was modified to include videotape feedback for the IVT + Video group. Videotape feedback without the other components was administered to 3 Video, and 1 Video. The 3 Disc. group spent 3 sessions discussing problems at interview and how to resolve them (without the active components included in the IVT programme). The Handout group received only the written material used with the IVT group, together with a brief description of the appropriate use of such information. The Att.C group had 3 sessions of discussion of leisure interests etc., to control for the non-specific effects of being in therapy. Subjects were assessed using videotaped roleplayed interviews. Analyses of verbal and general items demonstrated the superiority of the two experimental groups (IVT, and IVT + Video) over the alternative procedures. A good degree of social validation was achieved, there was evidence of generalisation and at follow-up the post-training improvements were well-maintained. Interview training was shown to be effective irrespective of the subject's level of intelligence. The interview training programme was extended to eight clinical single case studies. The programme was found to be effective with this population also, especially for subjects without wider social skills problems. Training in verbal skills was particularly important, as was generalisation training. In contrast, relaxation training, and training of non-verbal skills contributed little. Videotape feedback had less effect than expected, however, this was possibly due to the adoption of a random allocation procedure.

Abstract:
Design for maintenance is concerned with achieving good design that considers the general care and maintenance of equipment and the repair actions that follow a failure. This thesis gives an overview about the theoretical background of maintainability respectively design for maintenance and presents how companies in the Swedish manufacturing sector are dealing with design for maintenance for their machines. This work discusses the behavior and dealing with the topic design for maintenance from the perspective of the users.  In order to answer the research questions of this thesis, a literature review and expert interviews were used. Industrial experts from maintenance departments of Swedish industrial companies answered the interview questions for this research which serve as a foundation for the results and the analysis.  The results of the research questions and the conclusion are summarized on the basis of the expert interviews. It enables the reader to know to what extent design for maintenance is considered, how important it is, how communication affects the design and therefore the maintainability and finally a rating of how important a range of maintainability attributes are for them.  For the Swedish manufacturing industry design for maintenance is a topic which is considered as important, but a lot of effort in improving maintainability due to the design is not conducted. Improving maintainability with the help of adapting maintainability concepts or recording data especially for design issues are examples for the potential. Swedish companies have the opportunity to create an appropriate relation to the suppliers to utilize benefits in order to improve maintainability. The rating of maintainability attributes turns out as very difficult for the interview experts because of the strong relation between them.

Greatbatch, David. "The social organisation of news interview interaction." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1985. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/34622/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes and analyses aspects of the social organisation of British news interview interaction. After a review of the sociological literature on the British news interview in Chapter 1, and a discussion of the evolution of news interviewing in Britain in Chapter 2, Chapter 3 argues that conversation analysis provides the appropriate analytical framework for the study of all forms of naturally occurring interaction. Using the techniques of conversation analysis, the next three chapters then focus on thtee central domains of news interview conduct: the organisation of turn-taking, the organisation of topic, and the organisation of disagreement. Chapter 4 proposes (i) that the news interview turn-taking system operates through a simple form of turn-type pre-allocation, and (ii) that this accounts for a range of systematic differences between news interviews and mundane conversation. Chapter 5 first explicates same of the types of work that interviewers accomplish through the production of questions which maintain or pursue the topical focus of preceding turns and sequences. It then examines same of the procedures which interviewees recurrently use in order to shift the focus of their talk away from the topical agendas which interviewers' questions establish for their turns. Chapter 6, describes how the patterning of disagreements in news interviews differs from that of disagreements in ordinary talk. In so doing, it argues that the fact that the organisation of disagreements in news interviews differs from that in conversation is largely a product of considerations which arise due to the turn-type pre-allocated character of news interview interaction. Finally, Chapter 7 explores the relationship of same of the features described in Chapters 4-6 to the background legal, institutional and other normative constraints on news interviewer/ee conduct.

Zora, Subhi S. P. "A linguistic study of interview and conversation." Thesis, Aston University, 1990. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/14819/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis focuses on the overall structure of the language of two types of Speech Exchange Systems (SES) : Interview (INT) and Conversation (CON). The linguistic structure of INT and CON are quantitatively investigated on three different but interrelated levels of analysis : Lexis, Syntax and Information Structure. The corpus of data 1n vest1gated for the project consists of eight sessions of pairs of conversants in carefully planned interviews followed by unplanned, surreptitiously recorded conversational encounters of the same pairs of speakers. The data comprise a total of approximately 15.200 words of INT talk and of about 19.200 words in CON. Taking account of the debatable assumption that the language of SES might be complex on certain linguistic levels (e.g. syntax) (Halliday 1979) and might be simple on others (e.g. lexis) in comparison to written discourse, the thesis sets out to investigate this complexity using a statistical approach to the computation of the structures recurrent in the language of INT and CON. The findings indicate clearly the presence of linguistic complexity in both types. They also show the language of INT to be slightly more syntactically and lexically complex than that of CON. Lexical density seems to be relatively high in both types of spoken discourse. The language of INT seems to be more complex than that of CON on the level of information structure too. This is manifested in the greater use of Inferable and other linguistically complex entities of discourse. Halliday's suggestion that the language of SES is syntactically complex is confirmed but not the one that the more casual the conversation is the more syntactically complex it becomes. The results of the analysis point to the general conclusion that the linguistic complexity of types of SES is not only in the high recurrence of syntactic structures, but also in the combination of these features with each other and with other linguistic and extralinguistic features. The linguistic analysis of the language of SES can be useful in understanding and pinpointing the intricacies of spoken discourse in general and will help discourse analysts and applied linguists in exploiting it both for theoretical and pedagogical purposes.

This study aims at investigating how literary texts are transposed to the screen. This investigation was done using the novel Interview with the Vampire (1976) by Anne O'Brien Rice and its filmic adaptation (1994) directed by Neil Jordan. The main aspect of the novel and the film analyzed during the research was the homoeroticism. In order to do the investigation the most important passages of the novel in which the homoeroticism is more evident were analyzed to support the hypothesis that Rice´s male vampires are attracted to each other, especially the protagonists Louis, Lestat and Armand. Regarding the film, three scenes from it in which the homoerotic overtones are more evident were selected to show how film adaptors perform the transposition. It must be pointed out that the homoerotic content of the story diminishes drastically when transposed to the screen under Jordan´s direction. The implications of the choices made by the adaptors are discussed under the light of film scholars. In the case of Interview with the Vampire, lots of characters from the novel were left out, the physical appearance of the main characters was changed and many other elements were subtracted and added. Thus this study will present theories of film adaptation to try to explain how the transposition takes place.

Abstract:
Best-practice guidelines, grounded in psychological theory, are important for interviewers who engage with a vulnerable group such as children who allege abuse (reviewed in Chapters 1-6). Prior to conducting interviews, Scottish investigative interviewers must complete a JIIT (Joint investigative Interviewing Training) course, where they interview an adult actor who plays the role of an abused child. Limited field work suggests child interviews in Scotland are of low quality. No empirical work on the quality of JIIT precludes an understanding of whether i) interviewers are trained to an appropriate standard, ii) gains made in training diminish over time (i.e. when compared against performance in the field) and iii) whether adults from acting companies respond in a manner that reinforces best practice questioning by the trainee. This thesis examines the line of questioning and responses of actors during JIIT. Specifically, whether JIIT outcomes differ i) in two different police jurisdictions with separate untrained actors (Chapter 7), ii) according to whether training sessions are scribed or recorded (Chapter 8) and iii) according to an actor‟s expertise in the psychological literature on investigative interviewing (Chapter 9). Across studies, trainees were poor at using both "ground rules‟ and closure rules. Lines of questioning did not differ between two forces and untrained actors/trainees responded-to/used invitations to the same extent as directives. Untrained actors provided more informative responses to focussed prompts and suggestive questions than they did to open prompts. Although a „trained‟ adult actor provided a more authentic training opportunity, trainees were not sensitive to this feedback and it did not encourage better lines of questioning. Scribed versus recorded accounts of interviews captured fewer ground rules and closure rules, shorter responses to invitations, incomplete and incorrect records in response to invitations and, on average, omitted two details per interview. By way of comparison, analyses of actual Scottish field interviews with children (Chapter 10) revealed no use of any ground/closure rules at levels greater than chance. Children provided more details in response to option-posing questions and relatively short but detailed responses to suggestive questions, only in comparison to „other‟ questions in both instances. Of note in relation to earlier chapters, children gave longer average responses to invitations than directives. Overall the findings of this thesis indicate that interviewers‟ training is inconsistent across jurisdictions in Scotland and that many aspects of the training are inappropriate. For example, the adult actors hired to role-play abused children do not reinforce the use of best practice open prompts selectively as we would hope and the use of scribing as a method to record interviews is unreliable and resulted in both loss and incorrect recording of information. Further, the field interviews conducted with children in Scotland are of a low standard (6% open prompts), therefore, practical recommendations are made (Chapter 11) in light of these concerning findings.
