Full textPesticide exposure increases the risk of some long-term disease among farmers. Prevention currently relies on the application of “good agricultural practices”, which are poorly defined and far from farmers’ usual practices. Our aim was to contribute to prevention in France, by adopting a dual systemic and individual approach, aimed at improving consideration of farmers’ actual exposures and proposing appropriate solutions. The first part of this thesis studied the conservative approach of occupational exposure prediction models, by comparing exposures measured in various usual working contexts with those calculated by the models. Regulatory models underestimate the exposure of agricultural operators, particularly in fruit growing, green spaces and field crops, by overestimating the effectiveness of personal protective equipment and neglecting some exposure determinants. For re-entry/harvest workers, exposure after several days is also underestimated. In the second part, following a diagnosis of farmers’ preventive practices, a multi-component intervention was developed, based in particular on psychosocial theories and designed to influence behavior, as an alternative to standard Certiphyto training. Farmers do not always adopt preventive practices despite their knowledge of the risks, due to perceived barriers, social norms and self-efficacy. An intervention has been designed, including practical demonstrations, a peer trainer and processes of commitment and social norm change. Its effectiveness will be assessed by objective (urinary exposures) and self-reported (behaviours, psychosocial perceptions) criteria. This thesis proposes to integrate farmers’ actual exposures more closely into prevention, both in regulatoryprocesses and in training to encourage the adoption of protective practices. We need to continue our efforts to reach other highly exposed but poorly trained workers, and adopt a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to reducing pesticide risks

Full text1.

Full textThis thesis deals with the validation of the information provided by the sensors to the control of a wastewater treatment plant. For this purpose, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) approach is used in order to accomplish sensor fault detection and isolation of the wastewater treatment plant. This approach is well adapted to cope with diagnosis of complex systems because no a priori theoretical model of the plant must be considered. A data matrix, obtained by taking into consideration the available measurements in normal behaviour of the wastewater treatment plant, is used in order to build a PCA model. However, two major problems must be taking into consideration when PCA is implemented: 1. Outliers appear naturally in the collection data (caused for example by faulty data, data obtained during shutdown or startup periods or data issued from different operating mode) and consequently the PCA model can seriously be affected. 2. Multiple sensor faults introduce unavoidably a combinatory explosion of the different fault scenarios to be considered. The first problem is solved by introducing a robustness degree in the PCA methodology. Among the existing robust methods proposed in the literature, the robust estimator MCD (Minimum Covariance Determinant) is the most popular. However, this method needs a large computing time on the one hand and a priori knowledge of the quantity of outliers present (generally unknown) in the data on the other hand. To avoid these difficulties, a new robust method is proposed in this thesis. Our method, namely MMRPCA (MM-estimator Robust Principal Component Analysis), is based on MM-estimators. The second mentioned problem is tackled by reducing the considered number of faults thanks to a new analysis method of the capacities of detection and isolation of the PCA model. The efficiency of the proposed methodologies is verified by considering the real wastewater treatment plant data

Full textCompanies are undergoing a proliferation of norms and standards to control the impacts of their activities on society. A standard consists of providing "rules of the game" to regulate human behavior and limit the risks of malfunctioning and negative externalities. The neo-institutional theory considers that respecting standards is a sine qua non condition to remain legitimate in its market. Nevertheless, as the theory of Tétranormalization shows, norms and standards are abundant, changing, complex, costly and sometimes contradictory. A strategic choice as to the reasoned integration of standards seems inevitable to maintain the survival and development capacity of the company. We conduct a cross-sectional qualitative survey of nine companies of different sizes and sectors. The results show that managers who try to deal with both exogenous norms (those "born" outside the firm) and endogenous norms (those "born" inside the firm). At the same time, we are conducting a qualimetric research-intervention study in an SME to improve its standards integration strategy. We measure the hidden costs and performances related to integration and standards gaps. By participating in the improvement process, we identify the selection criteria for the reasoned integration of an exogenous standard. Finally, we experiment with pedagogical methods to facilitate the integration of the company's endogenous standards into the professional practices of employees

Full textThe recovery of correlated signals from their linear combinations is a challenging task and has many applications in signal processing. We focus on two problems that are the blind separation of sparse sources and the adaptive subtraction of multiple events in seismic processing. A special focus is put on convolutive mixtures: for both problems, finite impulse response filters can indeed be estimated for the recovery of the desired signals. For instantaneous and convolutive mixing models, we address the necessary and sufficient conditions for the exact extraction and separation of sparse sources by using the L0 pseudo-norm as a contrast function. Equivalences between sparse component analysis and disjoint component analysis are investigated. For adaptive multiple subtraction, we discuss the limits of methods based on independent component analysis and we highlight equivalence with Lp-norm-based methods. We investigate how other regularization parameters may have more influence on the estimation of the desired primaries. Finally, we propose to improve the robustness of adaptive subtraction by estimating the extracting convolutive filters directly in the curvelet domain. Computation and memory costs are limited by using the uniform discrete curvelet transform

Full textA Classification problem makes use of a training set consisting of data labeled by an oracle. The larger the training set, the best the performance. However, requesting the oracle may be costly. The goal of Active Learning is thus to minimize the number of requests to the oracle while achieving the best performance. To do so, the data that are presented to the oracle must be carefully selected among a large number of unlabeled instances acquired at no cost. However, the true profitability of labeling a particular instance may not be known perfectly. It can therefore be estimated along with a measure of uncertainty. To Increase the precision on the estimate, we need to label more data. Thus, there is a dilemma between labeling data in order to increase the performance of the classifier or to better know how to select data. This dilemma is well studied in the context of finite budget optimization under the name of exploration versus exploitation dilemma. The most famous solutions make use of the principle of Optimism in the Face of Uncertainty. In this thesis, we show that it is possible to adapt this principle to the active learning problem for classification. Several algorithms have been developed for classifiers of increasing complexity, each one of them using the principle of Optimism in the Face of Uncertainty, and their performances have been empirically evaluated
