Poag, James F., and Claire Baldwin, eds. The Construction of Textual Authority in German Literature of the Medieval and Early Modern Periods. The University of North Carolina Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5149/9781469658155_poag.

Abstract:
Interest in the intersections of various kinds of discourse provides the basis for a closer look at diverse textual strategies of cultural legitimation. This collection presents an introductory essay and eleven studies (written in English and German) that address claims to authority associated with differing kinds of texts from such varied perspectives as political performance, popular culture, history of science, interrelations between verbal texts and other arts, and artistic professionalism. Read together, these studies illuminate historical contingencies and reveal important changes in the "technologies of authority" from the twelfth through the eighteenth centuries. The contributors are Claire Baldwin, Thomas Cramer, Arthur Groos, Walter Haug, C. Stephen Jaeger, Jane O. Newman, James F. Poag, David Price, Rüdiger Schnell, Lynne Tatlock, Horst Wenzel, and Gerhild Scholz Williams.

Abstract:
The editors provide a brief introduction to the landscape of the debate in order to set up the issues and to display the interrelations amongst the contributions. First, some history is provided as well as some examples of the typical focus on propositionalism in much of the present literature. Second, a closer look is given to what exactly the propositionalist thesis might be. Third, motivations for propositionalism are discussed. Fourth, ways of and reasons for departing from propositionalism are offered. With the hope of showing how the various contributions connect to these four points as well as to each other, the chapter is guided by brief overviews of the contributions that will follow.

Edited by Wendy K. Smith, Marianne W. Lewis, Paula Jarzabkowski, and Ann Langley. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198754428.013.11.

Abstract:
The literature on paradoxes and pluralism has grown over the last decade. Although both concepts refer to multiplicity in or around organizations, they have been explored in parallel and have rarely been juxtaposed. The aim of this chapter is to discuss the possible interrelations between these concepts and their implications for the study of paradox within organizations. The chapter further seeks to contrast current notions of paradox and pluralism, and expand understanding of these phenomena by looking at them through two alternate theoretical prisms, namely Critical Management Studies (CMS) and complexity theory. In so doing, new lines of inquiry are opened up around paradoxical situations in pluralistic organizations. These alternate prisms invite further exploration into the interface between paradoxes and pluralism, and highlight the potential of performativity without instrumentality to guide strategies for balancing and benefiting from these important dimensions of contemporary organizations.

Ravasi, Davide. Organizational Identity, Culture, and Image. Edited by Michael G. Pratt, Majken Schultz, Blake E. Ashforth, and Davide Ravasi. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199689576.013.25.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of organizational identity is often confused with similar concepts such as organizational culture or organizational image. This confusion depends in part on the inconsistent use that scholars have made of these terms in the past. This chapter reviews the literature that has discussed how these concepts differ and how they are interrelated, and proposes an integrative framework that summarizes the most widely accepted definitions. It focuses in particular on research on dynamic interrelations between organizational identity and culture. It argues that apparently contradictory perspectives—conceiving of culture as a referent for identity vs. identity as facilitating contextual understanding for cultural norms—can be reconciled by acknowledging the dual nature of organizational identity as being constituted by social categories and organization-specific features, and the temporal dynamism that characterizes the relationship between culture and identity.
