Abstract:
In order to raise the standard of teaching and learning translation and interpretation, one of the essential points is to understand the fundamental issues of the theory of translation and interpretation as well as the qualities expected of translators and interpreters. Therefore, this Field Study Report attempts to review some of the literature available on these questions and make a survey of various translator and/or interpreter training courses outside Vietnam. Then, based upon the implications given by these theoretical issues and the findings from the survey of these courses, this Field Study Report tentatively suggests ways to raise the standard of teaching translation and interpretation at the Hanoi College of Foreign Languages. Accordingly, the context of the Vietnamese situation is always kept in view throughout these discussions.

Interpreting is an ancient activity but interpreter training is, with only decades of history, a fairly new discipline. To respond to the growing population of interpreting learners, and the rising demand for trained interpreters, this study investigates interpreters as learners, exploring the development of interpreters from trainees to practitioners. Research on learning reveals that learning is a knowledge construction process, and that the conventional cognitive approach towards learning has been challenged by the more updated social approach to learning, with differing knowledge claims on teaching and learning styles, as well as the knowledge they produce respectively. This study assumes the existence of ‘working knowledge’, incorporating both theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge. To narrow the general understanding on learning down to a specialised area, or so-called professional learning, the knowledge construction process thus equates to the development of expertise in a given field. In the context of learning interpreting, this study investigates how interpreters build their expertise in interpreting. Using Charles Goodwin’s concept of ‘professional vision’ (1994) is a way for interpreters as insiders to communicate their professional working knowledge to outsiders of the interpreting field. Previous work on interpreter education provides a significant account of interpreter training curriculum and rationale, but limited work has been done on the learning experiences of interpreters at different stages. In search of a paradigm which has the potential to understand learning interpreting developmentally, Lave and Wenger’s Communities of Practice (1999) was adopted as the theoretical framework of this study. It was anticipated that the Communities of Practice could provide a more encompassing view of learning. With the Communities of Practice as the theoretical framework, this study investigates how interpreters learn by looking into their mutual engagement, why they want to learn to be interpreters by exploring their joint enterprise, and what shared repertoires are developed in their venture of becoming an interpreter. The data of this study came from four groups of interpreters who had undergone identical interpreter training but were at different stages—student interpreters, graduate-to-be interpreters, novice interpreters and experienced interpreters—were recruited for open-ended interview. Based on an ethnographically-informed research design, narrative presented in the interview setting is the key tool in this study, offering a platform for the researcher to ‘discover and describe’ (Spradley, 1979) the learning experiences of interpreters. The narrative data from interviewing interpreters reveal the characteristics of interpreting learners before training, learning during training, learning at work and explores learning as participation. The findings demonstrate that many interpreting learners are not only language graduates with a practical attitude towards the promising career prospects of interpreting, but have also had related interpreting experiences prior to training, which motivated them to undertake training. Next, the narrative data examined indicate that learning during training can be divided into three primary activities: learning in class with tutors, group practice with peers, and self-study. After training, learning at work takes place within three domains: interpreting practice, the interpreting profession, and working with people. Practically, trainee interpreters increase their background knowledge and develop interpreting skills during training, while practising interpreters apply their interpreting skills at work and develop coping strategies for the demands of their work. The final sets of data examined in this study investigate learning as participation for practising interpreters using the concept of the Communities of Practice, and reveal the existence of a dichotomy between two sub-markets in interpreting, namely the private freelance market and the staff positions in international organisations, especially in terms of the interpreting market as perceived by practising interpreters. The data demonstrates the level of competition in the private market which leads freelance interpreters to undercut and undermine each other, and that the support system seems non-exist in the private market since freelancers do not expect to help each other at all. In contrast, for those staff interpreters working for international organisations, they have a more straightforward career trajectory to follow. Lastly, the development gap between trainees and practitioners is addressed by articulating the professional vision offered by practising interpreters, which include methods for learning interpreting and an effective approach to job-seeking, something novice interpreters are eager to know. From a theoretical perspective, the idea of the Communities of Practice was found to be problematic for two main reasons: Firstly, looking from the view of mobility, there are multiple Communities of Practice in existence in the context of becoming an interpreter: Community of Trainees (CoT), Community of Freelancers (CoF) and Community of Staff Interpreters (CoS), with their own particular features and development trajectories. Secondly, by investigating the idea of identity, the three major characteristics (joint enterprise, mutual engagement and shared repertoire) of the Communities of Practice are missing or only partially evident in CoF and CoS, with only CoT completely following the characteristics outlined by Wenger (1998) and Lave and Wenger (1999). Finally, this study addresses the educational implications for interpreter training. This study fills the knowledge gap between interpreter training, learning interpreting and interpreting practice, contributing to a contextualised understanding of how one becomes an interpreter from a learner’s perspective and outlining how interpreters at different stages of development approach their professional learning.

Abstract:
This thesis is an empirical and interdisciplinary investigation into the consecutive conference interpreter’s (CCIr) role as intercultural mediator. It seeks to determine whether there is a case for intercultural mediation in conference interpreting despite the greater degree of cultural transparency that characterises discourse in conference interpreting situations (CISs) when compared with other settings such as community and/or court interpreting. It also proposes an account of the CCIr’s role as intercultural mediator as an alternative to other accounts of the interpreter’s role in the literature on conference interpreting because those accounts do not explain clearly the CCIr’s role or are in conflict with very well-established concepts and principles associated with translation/interpreting such as faithfulness, accuracy, neutrality or accessibility. The account of the CCIr’s role as intercultural mediator is derived from the principles of a theoretical framework that draws on the findings of the theory of sense (Seleskovitch and Lederer 1995) and Sperber and Wilson’s (1986; 1995) relevance theory of communication (RT). The account provides the basis for formulating a clearer definition of the concept of intercultural mediation in the context of consecutive conference interpreting (CCI). Analyses of two types of data underpin the investigation: data from authentic examples from interpreters’ actual performance and data from 295 responses to a worldwide survey of professional conference interpreters conducted by this researcher for use in this thesis. Results of both analyses confirm the case for intercultural mediation in CISs and the validity of the proposed account of the CCIr’s role as intercultural mediator though situationality has been found to play an important role in the extent to which intercultural mediation is needed. Results also shed light on CCIrs’ use of cultural mediation procedures and the role of interpreters’ professional status, experience and language direction on their ability/willingness to perform intercultural mediation.

Much research on reading comprehension has been done with native readers in mind; however, this study deals with reading comprehension problems for non-native readers - Vietnamese students of English. The study begins with a description of the interpreters and translators training at the Hanoi Foreign Languages College. Based on the aims and objectives of the training course the study emphasises the importance of teaching reading skills to Vietnamese interpreter and translator students in the first, second and third year. To deal with this problem, the study overviews relevant theoretical issues of reading skills presented in current literature with the purpose of relating these to the realities of teaching reading in a particular context in Vietnam. The study then looks at the main problems of teaching reading skills in the English Interpreter Department at the Hanoi Foreign Languages College. Focus has been placed on the analysis of some difficulties encountered by Vietnamese students reading English in an attempt to answer the pertinent question 'Why is it difficult for Vietnamese students to read English?' Consequently, the study considers ways in which the teaching of reading skills to Vietnamese students of interpreting and translating may be improved. The study is also concerned with the selection and development of materials and then proposes a reading syllabus in order to promote more rapid and efficient progress in the teaching of reading skills. Finally, the writer makes some suggestions about how to improve the situation of teaching reading to her colleagues in the EFL area based on her own teaching experience.

Her Majesty’s Courts Service in England and Wales has been subject to various changes within the past seventeen years. New working methods have been adopted, while the introduction of technologies has revolutionised the legal sphere. Since 2000, courts in England and Wales have indeed been increasingly using videoconference (VC) technologies to speed up the legal process, to enhance security, and to reduce costs, all of this in a context of budgetary constraints. Such VC pieces of equipment mean that all parties are not required to be physically in attendance in court for a case to be heard. In fact, a defendant may attend his pre trial court hearing from his detention centre since the courtroom and the prison will be linked via cameras, screens, and microphones. Interestingly, the court interpreter can be called to interpret in either location. Even though some may embrace the advent of technological tools available in court interpreting, the effect that they may have is still unknown. Some studies have explored various linguistic and para-linguistic features of Videoconference Interpreting (VCI). However, although the court interpreter’s role, from a conduit to that of an active participant, has been widely researched in Interpreting Studies (e.g. Hale, 2008; Martin and Ortega Herráez, 2009), the role of the court interpreter when interpreting via VC systems is an under-researched field. In this context, this thesis examines the interpreter’s perception of her role, whether she is located in court or in prison, through the analysis of eighteen interviews conducted with practising court interpreters. Building on research carried out on the use of VCI in court and the court interpreter’s role in a face to face setting, this study adopts an interdisciplinary approach by examining the interpreter’s role perception through the lens of role-space and that of Actor Network Theory. It is argued that the interpreter’s perception of her role-space varies, depending on whether she considers herself, in Actor-Network Theory terms, as a primum movens or not, alongside the role-space axes of presentation of self, participant alignment, and/or interaction management. Furthermore, the court interpreter deploys many-but-mostly-covert role interessement devices to ensure that the other court actors rally on the interpreter’s perception of her role. This thesis ends with various recommendations as to how the court interpreter can re-align her role-space when interpreting in VCI. Behovet av tolkar inom hälso- och sjukvården har ökat i takt med att antalet flerspråkiga individer ökar i dagens samhälle. Detta medför högre krav på sjukvården att upprätthålla kvalitén på god hälso- och sjukvård för alla. Logopeder kommer ofta i kontakt med flerspråkiga personer och är då i många av fallen i behov av tolkar vid utredningar eller behandlingar. I dagsläget finns det endast ett fåtal studier tillgängliga som beskriver de utmaningar i ett samarbete med logoped, som kan upplevas ur tolkens perspektiv. Syftet med studien är därmed att undersöka tolkars roll och få fram deras perspektiv av logopedisk utredning och behandling av flerspråkiga personer. Ökad kunskap om tolkens perspektiv skulle kunna tydliggöra de utmaningar och välfungerande arbetssätt som kan finnas och bidra till att förstärka samarbetet mellan tolk och logoped.Materialet för studien består av enkätsvar från 209 tolkar som arbetar i olika delar av Sverige. Information om tolkarna sammanställdes i tabeller för att kunna ge en överblick över bakgrundsinformation samt svar på ett antal fasta frågor om deras perspektiv och erfarenheter av tolkning inom logopediska aktiviteter. Många av de fasta frågorna hade också möjlighet till fritextsvar, vilket i hög grad utnyttjades av de tolkar som besvarade enkäten. Fritextsvarenanalyserades med tematisk analys. Resultatet påvisade att många av tolkarna överlag upplevde samarbetet med logopederna som positivt, men att det finns förbättringsområden. Det främst förekommande området var att tolkarna upplevde att logopederna inte hade tillräcklig kunskap över hur tolkarna bör utföra sitt yrke (utifrån yrkesetiska principer). En förbättrad förståelse förvarandras professioner skulle kunna öka den ömsesidiga förståelsen i samarbetet mellan tolk och logoped. Att kunna få ta del av de material som ska användas innan ett besök hos logopeden för att kunna förbereda sig, är något som tolkarna angav skulle kunna förbättra deras egen prestation och på så sätt även bidra till ökad patientsäkerhet.
The need for interpreters in health care has increased as the number of multilingual individuals increases in today´s society. This entails greater demands on healthcare services to maintain a high quality of healthcare for all. Speech therapists often encounter multilingual people and are then in many cases in need of interpreters during assessments or interventions. Currently, there are only a few studies available that describe challenges that may occur in collaborationsbetween interpreters and speech and language therapist, viewed from the interpreters’perspective. The purpose of this study is thus to investigate the role of interpreters and emphasise their perspective on speech and language therapy activities (e.g. assessment and intervention) for multilingual people. Increased knowledge of the interpreters’ perspective may reveal challenges, as well as identify well-functioning working methods that exist. Results of the study may contribute to strengthening the collaboration between interpreters and speech and language therapists.The material for the study consists of questionnaire responses from 209 interpreters from different parts of Sweden. To provide a comprehensive overview of their answers,information about the interpreters was compiled in tables. Free text answers were an accompanying option to many of the fixed questions. The interpreters' free text answers were analysed using thematic analysis. Overall, the results showed that many of the interpreters perceived the collaboration with the speech therapists as positive, but that there are areas for improvement. The most commonly addressed area was that the interpreters felt that the speech therapists did not have sufficient knowledge of how interpreters are required to perform their profession (by oath of conduct). An improved understanding of each other's professions might increase the degree of satisfaction in the collaboration between interpreter and speech and language pathologist. Getting access to the materials that are to be used for assessment or intervention, before the appointment to be interpreted, would provide the interpreter with a fair chance to prepare appropriately. This is something that a majority of the interpreters in the present study pressed would improve their own performance and thus also increase patient safety.

Simultaneous interpreting requires efficient use of highly domain-specific terminology in the working languages of an interpreter. By necessity, interpreters often work in a wide range of domains and have limited time to prepare for new topics. To ensure the best possible simultaneous interpreting of specialised conferences where a great number of domain-specific terms are used, interpreters need preparation, usually under considerable time pressure. They need to familiarise themselves with concepts, technical terms, and proper names in the interpreters’ working languages. There is little research into the use of modern terminology extraction tools and pipelines for the task of simultaneous interpreting. A few previous studies mentioned the application of corpora as potential electronic tools for interpreters. For instance, Fantinuoli (2006) and Gorjanc (2009) discussed the functions of specific online crawling tools and explored ways to extract specialised terminology from disposable web corpora for interpreters. However, there has not been any empirical study to test how term extraction tools and the use of corpora can help interpreters increase their preparation efficiency and how these technologies and practices influence interpreters’ simultaneous interpreting performance. This study investigates a corpus-based terminology preparation pipeline integrating building small comparable corpora, using automatic term extractors and concordancers. We compared and evaluated several term extraction and concordance tools for Chinese and English, and a single term extractor and a concordancer with comparatively better performance were selected to be used in the empirical study of this research. With training on how to use the tools for interpreting preparation, interpreters are expected to develop the skills to build their own terminology resources and activate relevant terms for specialised simultaneous interpreting tasks. This study also investigates the effect of using the tools on trainee interpreters’ performances by looking at the quality of their simultaneous interpreting outputs. For this purpose, we ran two experiments with MA trainee interpreters at the University of Leeds using different preparation procedures (and tools) to prepare for simultaneous interpreting tasks (English and Chinese, both directions) on two specialised topics: Seabed Minerals (SM) and Fast Breeder Reactors (FR). I also collected data from focus groups to investigate the trainee interpreters’ views on the use of different procedures (and tools). Our results suggest that the preparation procedure using both the term extractor (Syllabs Tools) and the concordancer (Sketch Engine) yielded better preparation results compared with a traditional preparation procedure. It helped improve the trainee interpreters’ terminological performance during simultaneous interpreting by significantly increasing term accuracy scores by 7.5% and reducing the number of omission errors by 9.3%. On the other hand, terminology preparation (through using both the term extractor and the concordancer) is not a “magical cure” for all errors. Our data shows that the preparation procedure (and the tools) only helped to improve the students’ holistic SI scores by 2.8% (but not yielding any statistical significance). This thesis demonstrates that training on terminology preparation for technical meetings could be a useful supplement to the already existing professional interpreting training. It is important for both students and trainers to be aware that electronic tools, when used properly, can assist the interpreters’ terminology preparation and achieve an enhanced performance. It also offers directions for further research in the application of modern term extraction technology for conference interpreters.

Debido a que el mercado de traducción e interpretación en el Perú se encuentra en vías de desarrollo, la internacionalización se convierte en la alternativa de carrera deseada por traductores e intérpretes para tener un mayor prestigio. Esto podría llevar a que los traductores que pertenecen a un mercado internacional perciban un mayor estatus ocupacional en comparación con los que pertenecen al mercado peruano de traducción. La presente investigación tiene como objetivo contrastar las percepciones del estatus profesional de los traductores peruanos del mercado nacional con los del mercado internacional según siete dimensiones: formación profesional, experiencia profesional, influencia, aspectos gremiales, visibilidad, reconocimiento social y remuneración. La percepción del estatus profesional de los traductores peruanos permitirá aproximarse a la situación de la profesión en el Perú. Se propone aplicar encuestas utilizando como base de datos asociaciones y escuelas de traducción e interpretación peruanas, además de perfiles de traductores peruanos actualizados en redes sociales como LinkedIn y Facebook. Con la información obtenida de las encuestas, se propone realizar entrevistas semiestructuradas a ocho traductores e intérpretes que se desempeñan en el mercado nacional e internacional.
Given that the translation and interpretation market in Peru is still emerging, internationalization has become the desired career alternative for translators and interpreters to gain more status. Therefore, Peruvian translators who belong to an international market would perceive a higher occupational status compared to those that belong to the local Peruvian translation market. This research aims to contrast the perceptions of the professional status of Peruvian translators working in the local market with those working in the international market according to seven dimensions: professional education, professional experience, influence, group membership, visibility, social recognition. Thus, the perceptions of the professional status of Peruvian translators are crucial to approach the status of the translation profession in Peru. Data collection is devised firstly by means of the implementation of a survey using Peruvian translation and interpretation associations and schools as databases, as well as up- to- date profiles of Peruvian translators in social networks such as LinkedIn and Facebook. Furthermore, using the data obtained from the survey, we will conduct semi-structured interviews to eight Peruvian translators who work in both the local and international markets.

No contexto das tecnologias propostas pela OMG, o MOF é utilizado para definir a sintaxe de linguagens de modelação, contudo, os aspectos semânticos não podem ser capturados usando esta linguagem. A descrição dos aspectos não sintácticos é realizada com recurso à linguagem OCL. Consequentemente, para uma completa definição de uma linguagem de modelação é necessário incorporar o OCL no MOF, criando uma infra-estrutura que possui a expressividade necessária para realizar esta função. Este projecto visa complementar a ferramenta de metamodelação MetaSketch Editor, introduzindo a capacidade de executar expressões em OCL e permitindo, desta forma, a verificação semântica dos modelos construídos usando o MetaSketch Editor. A gramática da linguagem OCL adoptada está de acordo com a especificação elaborada pela OMG (2006-05-01), juntando-se algumas contribuições de trabalhos existentes sobre esta linguagem. O projecto envolveu a implementação de um parser com recurso ao sistema GOLD Parser, a implementação da standard library do OCL em C# e, por último, a implementação de uma estratégia de execução das expressões em OCL.

Despite recent developments in translation technologies, most existing software programs are designed primarily to cater to the needs of language professionals such as translators and terminologists, while conference interpreters are neglected as a user group with a distinct work profile. Hence, this thesis investigates terminology management in the context of interpreting . A review of literature on interpreting and terminology is complemented by a survey conducted among professional interpreters, in order to identify their terminology management needs and practices and evaluate their experience using computers. Generic guidelines based on survey data are suggested for developing a terminology tool for interpreters, and are implemented in a basic demonstration of the use of database management software (DBMS) in this context.

Abstract:
In my artwork, I incorporate narratives, which help me explore relationships and how they exist within the context of the formal imagery on the page. The idea of storytelling highly influences the way I approach and produce art. To hint at a story will entice the viewer to make connections and create a platform on which to further inspect the image. The lines in my work attempt to mimic the way stories and information can loop and intertwine to negate the personal, surround the personal or maybe just provide something that the viewer would have to weave his way through in order to create that relationship between the disparate layers. Through my work, I seek to divert the viewer's expression of an instinctual response, from one that would be expected to one that plays with the idea of the spectator transforming from onlooker to interpreter.

O abandono dos Centros Históricos durante o século XX fez com que estes entrassem em decadência. Grande parte do Património arquitetónico presente nestes centros ficou desocupado, sem manutenção correndo o risco de perder a sua memória. No entanto, tem-se assistido cada vez mais à preocupação em revitalizar e reabilitar estes lugares, muitas vezes representantes das histórias das cidades, de maneira a preservá-los para as gerações futuras. Neste projeto final de mestrado, propomos a (RE)interpretação da memória de uma Casa Senhorial, considerada Património Municipal de Santiago do Cacém, e do Centro histórico envolvente. Para tal foi necessário conhecer a história e o património de Santiago, reconhecer os problemas de um Centro Histórico. encontrar soluções para os mesmos, entender o que define uma Casa Senhorial, interpretar o que é memória e a sua relação com a arquitetura e por último compreender o que é considerado património e como podemos/devemos intervir no mesmo. Após a análise de toda a informação, surge a proposta para a criação do Centro Interpretativo do Património de Santiago do Cacém, que proporciona não só a divulgação como a sua preservação, eternizando a sua memória.
ABSTRACT: The desertification of Historical Centres in the XX century made them obsolete. The Architectural Patrimony that there once was, was left behind without any maintenance, at the risk of losing its own memory. However, there’s been and increasing concern about the rehabilitation and revitalization of this places, that so often represent the history of its cities, for the next generations to see. In this master’s final project, we propose a memory (RE)interpretation of a Casa Senhorial, considered Municipal Patrimony of Santiago do Cacém, and its surrounding historical centre. For this purpose, it became necessary to know the history and Santiago Architectural patrimony; the problems and solutions for an obsolete Historical Centre, as well as understanding what defines a Casa Senhorial; memory and its relationship with architecture and patrimony and how we should intervene with it. From all this knowledge, a proposal for the creation of an Interpretation Centre for Santiago do Cacém Patrimony comes up, providing not only the possibility to disclosure as well as to maintain it, eternalizing its memory.

Security of programming languages, particularly programming languages used for network applications, is a major issue at this time. Despite the best efforts of language designers and implementers, serious security vulnerabilities continue to be discovered at an alarming rate. Thus, development of analysis tools that can be used to uncover insecure or malicious code is an important area of research. This thesis focuses on the use of the lightweight formal method tool Alloy to perform static analysis on binary code, Byte-compiled languages that run on virtual machines are of particular interest because of their relatively small instruction sets, and also because they are well represented on the Internet. This thesis describes a static analysis methodology in which desired security properties of a language are expressed as constraints in Alloy, while the actual bytes being analyzed are expressed as Alloy model initializers. The combination of these two components yields a complete Alloy model in which any model counterexample represents a constraint violation, and hence a security vulnerability. The general method of expressing security requirements as constraints is studied, and results are presented for Java bytecodes running on the Java Virtual Machine, as well as for Adobe Flash SWF files containing ActionScript bytecodes running on the Action Script Virtual Machine. It is demonstrated that many examples of malware are detected by this technique. In addition, analysis of benign software is shown to not produce any counterexamples. This represents a significant departure from standard methods based on signatures or anomaly detection.

Abstract:
Implementing advice weaving using code rewriting can cause performance problems during application startup and incremental development. We present an interpreter based (non-rewriting) approach using a simple table and cache structure for matching pointcuts against dynamic join points together with a simple mechanism for calling the matched advice. An implementation in the JikesRVM, an open source research virtual machine, shows the approach is straightforward to implement. Internal micro-benchmarks show dynamic join point execution overhead of approximately 28% in the common case where no advice is applicable. Comparative micro-benchmarks with ajc load time weaving show startup time reductions equivalent to the interpreted execution of 100-117 million unadvised dynamic join points. The cache and table structures could be used during later (i.e. JIT time) per-method rewrite based weaving to reduce pointcut matching overhead. We conclude that it is worthwhile to develop and evaluate a complete in-VM hybrid implementation, comprising both non-rewriting and rewriting based advice weaving.

This thesis looks at the role of the Slovak-English interpreter working in the consecutive mode in the business environment especially with regard to rendering cultural references from source texts, whether these are (British) English or Slovak. Since culture in this thesis is taken in the broad sense of the whole way of life, cultural references can also be wide-ranging. The strategy an interpreter will opt for when interpreting cultural references depends on the circumstances under which he or she operates. Interpreting puts constraints on interpreters which make their activity distinct from translation of written texts, where in cases of unknown cultural references, translators can resort to the use of notes. Interpreters are engaged in mediating communication between (two) clients who do not share the same language and who come from differing cultural backgrounds. Due to differences between the (British) English and the Slovak cultures - in their material, spiritual and behavioural aspects - as well as due to lack of knowledge of cultural references which the clients of English-Slovak interpreting have and which was caused historically, some intercultural mediation is needed. Its particular forms are the outcome of the weighing of the circumstances under which the English-Slovak consecutive interpreter works. Moreover, business interpreting contains challenges in the form of the vocabulary of business, a relatively new area for Slovak interpreters. An interpreter, under all the above mentioned constraints, has to fulfil his or her role: to establish and maintain communication between the two parties. Therefore some of the strategies used will try to prevent miscommunication, while others will try to deal with miscommunication once it has occurred.

In this thesis I take an anthropological approach to examining the doctor-patient relationship and how barriers to this relationship, such as language or cultural differences, effect medical treatment. This literature review analyzes questions such as: What are the roles of medical interpreters, how can medical interpreters act as advocates for the patients, and how do they affect the trust in the doctor5patient relationship? I examine the impacts on trust of cultural differences, language barriers, and use of Medical Interpreters within the doctor-patient relationship. By better understanding the doctor-patient relationship from an anthropological perspective, I will answer questions that show how doctors and patients can establish trust, overcome language barriers, and have higher cultural competency. These answers will aid in closing the gaps between doctors and patients and renew a stronger-trusting relationship. The use of Medical Interpreters is the key to improving the relationship and overall health of limited English speaking patients.

This sequential mixed design study aimed to: examine the rates of compassion fatigue (CF), compassion satisfaction, and burnout, identify best predictors of CF, and explore participants' personal experiences, understanding and ways of coping with this phenomenon. 46 interpreters, health advocates and therapists working with trauma survivors participated in the quantitative sequence, four of which were randomly selected for subsequent semi-structured interviews. CF was measured by Compassion Satisfaction/Fatigue Self-Test for Helpers (Stamm 1995-1998), empathy was measured by Hogan Empathy Scale (HOS-R) (Greifand Hogan 1973), exposure was quantified as trauma work hours per week, and perceived social support measure was designed for the purpose of this study. It was hypothesised that empathy would be a significant predictor of compassion fatigue, and that there may be differences in the predictive value of the analysed variables between clinicians and interpreters. In the stepwise multiple regression for interpreters, perceived social support (F\i,n = 6.96, p < 0.05) explained 29% of variance in compassion fatigue, exposure (Fjjt = 6.47, p < 0.05) explained additional 20%, while empathy was excluded from the analysis. In clinicians, empathy explained 49% of variance in compassion fatigue (Fi,25 = 24.27, p < 0.001), while exposure and perceived social support were found not to be significant predictors. Therefore, greater susceptibility to compassion fatigue was associated with greater empathic ability only for clinicians. For interpreters, social support, followed by exposure, was the best predictor of compassion fatigue. The second phase of the study added a qualitative dimension to the investigation. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore experiences, perceptions, and understanding of compassion fatigue, coping and compassion satisfaction in four randomly selected participants from the same sample. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) revealed a number of core and master themes, some of which have complemented the quantitative findings. The study was discussed in the light of the relevant literature and critically evaluated in terms of its limitations, implications and the scope for further research.

Abstract:
This study investigates the ethical reasoning abilities of sign language interpreters in the US using two data sources, one that is qualitative and one that is quantitative. The twenty-five participants involved in this study were recruited after their completion of an online training session on interpreting ethics (unrelated to this study or the author). Their responses to six ethical scenarios (e.g., what would you do and why) were analysed through the lens of James Rest’s three tacit moral schemas: personal interest schema, maintaining norms schema, and post-conventional schema. These data were then compared to the results of Rest’s standardised instrument of moral reasoning, the Defining Issues Test, also based on these three schema preferences. These data show that the interpreter participants have a preference for a maintaining norms schema on both qualitative and quantitative data sources. This moral reasoning pattern found in the interpreter cohort is more typical of adolescent reasoning – a much younger profile than the actual age and education level of the participant pool. Furthermore, this reasoning preference does not coincide with the justice claims often made in the profession (e.g. the ally model). Justice as defined by collaboration by both moral psychologists and translation scholars is only weakly evident in the ethical discourse of the interpreter participants. These reasoning patterns that reveal an adolescent and non-collaborative approach are also evident in ethical documents and literature of the sign language interpreting profession. How the profession has come to conceive of and articulate ethics is explored as a potential limiting factor on the study participant’s abilities to express more sophisticated reasoning. In addition to moral judgement patterns evident in the quantitative and qualitative data, the study cohort’s qualitative data are examined for other psychological aspects of Rest’s Four Component Model (FCM). Findings indicate that sign language interpreters make many assumptions about service users’ needs, actions, and intentions. Further, they are more concerned for how decisions might impact them than the potential impact on service users. As a result, education interventions are indicated particularly for moral sensitivity and moral judgement.

When the European Economic Community was first created, it only had six members and four official languages; after more than sixty years and six enlargements the official languages became twenty-four, as the number of Member States increased to twenty-seven. The European Union considers multilingualism one of its core values as well as an essential feature of a democratic organisation and ensures that all of the European citizens have a right to access the European legislation and communicate with the European institutions in their own language. To accomplish this goal of linguistic diversity the European Union employs a considerable number of interpreters and translators. This paper aims to analyse the role of interpreters and translators, who often remain invisible, in this multilingual and multicultural context and prove their importance despite some of the issues connected to this policy. From a general historical and linguistic overview of the European Union, the paper goes into more detail to describe how both translation and interpreting resources are managed in the European institutions, while the final section provides an analysis of the obstacles to multilingualism.

English When we observe the interpreters in their booths battling with ambiguity in order to find the accurate meaning of an ambiguous utterance, we inevitably come to the realization of the daunting impact of ambiguities on the latter. Ambiguity in general and diplomatic ambiguity in particular, is a thorn in interpreters’ sides. Then, the main question is “what strategies can the interpreter use to cope successfully with diplomatic ambiguity?” How do interpreters manage to find ways of resolving instances of ambiguity when interpreting in a diplomatic setting that requires immediate disambiguation. This mini-dissertation investigates the theme of diplomatic ambiguity in interpreter-mediated communication and comes up with responses to these concerns and queries. It (this mini-dissertation) primarily focuses on interpreting as an act of communication insofar as interpreting is a professional verbal communication activity. It then looks specifically into ambiguity in diplomatic communication. Diplomatic communication is often riddled with ambiguity; in turn, ambiguity, affects and correlates to meaning. And here lies the problem with diplomatic ambiguity: diplomatic ambiguity prevents a proper understanding or reception of the intended meaning. It therefore poses problems to the interpreter. In view of the above, this mini-dissertation has a practical purpose: to provide the interpreter with a clear sense of problem-solving techniques for the resolution of ambiguity. In this respect, coping tactics and strategies will be proposed as a means of clarifying ambiguities, elucidating obscure passages.
French Lorsque l’on assiste au spectacle d’interprètes s’échinant dans leurs cabines à trouver le vrai sens d’une expression ambiguë, l’on se rend bien vite compte des effets redoutables de l’ambiguïté sur ces derniers. La question de l’ambiguïté en général, celle de l’ambiguïté du discours diplomatique en particulier, constitue une écharde dans le flanc de tout interprète. Alors, la question majeure qui se pose est de savoir «à quelles stratégies les interprètes peuvent-ils recourir pour faire face avec succès à l’ambiguïté diplomatique?». Comment les interprètes arrivent-ils à remédier aux problèmes d’ambiguïté diplomatique surgissant au cours de l’interprétation et qui requièrent une désambiguïsation sur le champ ? Ce mémoire traite de la question de l’ambiguïté diplomatique en situation de communication médiée par un interprète et vient en réponse aux interrogations et préoccupations ci-dessus. Ce mémoire aborde en premier chef la question de l’interprétation conçue comme un acte communicationnel dans la mesure où elle se définit comme un exercice de communication orale fait par un professionnel. Ensuite, un accent particulier sera mis sur l’ambigüité dans la communication diplomatique qui en recèle souvent; à son tour, l’ambiguïté entrave l’appréhension du sens [des mots ou concepts] auquel elle étroitement liée. C’est ici donc que se situe toute la problématique de l’ambiguïté diplomatique: l’ambiguïté diplomatique obstrue aussi bien la bonne compréhension que la réception du message à transmettre. Dès lors surgissent des difficultés d’interprétation. Au regard de ce qui précède, ce mémoire se veut pragmatique: susciter au sein des interprètes le réflexe de la recherche de techniques de résolution des problèmes de l’ambiguïté. 'Figures of speech' provide a suggestive key for approaching the question of Jesus' individual tone of voice. Apprehending a figure implies insight into an intention, and beyond intention to discern unconscious influences upon the speaker. This is the conceptual framework for a study of the 'voice of Jesus' in six parables peculiar to Luke (10:25-37; 15:11-32; 16:1-9; 16:19-31; 18:1-8; 18:9-14) and in commentaries upon them. In the premodern era commentators approached the parables with an immediacy of insight, seeking the divine intention behind the texts. Nevertheless we may hear the voice of Jesus echoing in their commentaries in morally specific tones. In the work of Jülicher 'insight', though repudiated, is still important, as he seeks the intention of Jesus through the figure of simile. Jülicher offers insight into Jesus as a passionate communicator, but goes beyond Jesus' intention in making him a propounder of generalities. More recently a concern with the intention of Jesus is replaced by a concern with how his voice was heard. The necessity of insight remains apparent in B.B. Scott's use of metaphor as an interpretative key. An impression is given of Jesus as a provocative subversive. In their context in Luke-Acts, the parables function as metonymies of the gospel, and yield an impression of the voice of Jesus as suggestively concerned with the life of this world. In the ministry of Jesus the parables function as synecdoches, offering hearers a realistic and hopeful 'part' of the world from which they must fashion a 'whole’. Against the background of Scripture the parables display a deep continuity with older forms of discourse, but also important tokens of newness. A stream of influence can be traced from the Old Testament, through Jesus and Luke, and on through their interpreters, though recently its course has been somewhat diverted.

Across the United States, schools are largely segregated by race and ethnicity, resulting in schools that are densely Latino and teaching staff who are overwhelming monolingual English speakers, as most teachers are white women. This has created difficulty in home communication in these schools. Given the positive impacts of personal and frequent home communication, a greater capacity of teachers to communicate with parents may be an important asset in school improvement efforts. This study looks at ongoing design-based research efforts to engage bilingual students in helping their teachers become more capable of communicating in Spanish. Through online-delivered challenges, teachers and students work together to complete a series of tasks that help teachers learn about communicating across cultures and preparing several communication aids to help them reach out to Latino immigrant parents more frequently. Through a narrative profile analysis, we uncover the influences the five-week intervention had on teachers' home communication efforts, beliefs in their own ability to develop stronger language skills, and relationships with students. The findings inform a set of preliminary procedures for a new method of research into understandings skills they use outside of school. We call this new method Integrating Funds of Knowledge. The findings also inform a set of core conjectures on how this method can help educators partner with their students to work toward solving a problem in their school.

This thesis uses a multi-method approach to examine the expectations of interpreting stakeholders in two different multilingual church organisations. Drawing on concepts from skopos theory and homiletics and on methodologies and findings from research on client expectations and interpreters’ perceptions of their work, it posits a four part correlational model to explain and predict how the skopos of an interpreted event will relate to stakeholders’ generic and event-specific expectations of interpreters. Results from a survey, interviews and participant observations all suggest that, contrary to existing theory, there is little evidence of a direct relationship between skopos and expectations of interpreters. On the contrary, it appears that organisational attitudes to interpreting are a much more salient factor in the conceptualisation of the work of interpreters and on the strategies they are expected to use to solve problems. The implications of these results for church interpreting research, theories of interpreting and interpreting practice are discussed, alongside the need to rethink and redesign the methods used in stakeholder expectations research, especially when this involves the use of surveys.

In this work was done mecanic-quantic periodic in level ab initio and using the density functional theory (DFT) combined with the B3LYP (BECKE 1993; LEE, et al 1998) to a series of titanates. Models periodic simulations were used to do a system study about structure property, electronics and optics and analyze the dislocation influence over this materials structure and to study too the doping influence, using the CRYSTAL98 program. With objective of characterize the electronic levels of the BT (titanate barium) materials pure and BT doped with Mn and BST (barium and stroncium titanate). This electronic levels were analyzed from state density projections in the region between upper limits of the valence band and inferior of the conduction band, were analyzed the structure band and electronic densities with objective of comprehend better the photoluminescence properties of this materials in the amorphous phase (desordered structure). To realize the photoluminescence propriety study of materials used date obtained by Rietveld refinement and two periodic models of super cell were developed order structure (phase cristaline) and desordered structure (phase amorphous), in analyze were built three periodic models to theoric BT and of pure refines and of the doped with objective to offer a new alternative of a mecanic-quantic periodic model to simulate the structure deformation induce by Mn doping in the BT. This modelization became possible give general acess of the doping effect in the electronic structure and still to analyzed the doping element influence in the disposition electronic configuration, considering that Mn isn t included in the simulation but this dope effects were noted with the refinement of Rietveld date used. All theoric results obtained were correlation with experimentals results to investigate and interpret better these materials proprieties.
Neste trabalho foram realizados cálculos mecânico-quântico periódicos, efetuados em nível ab initio e utilizando-se a teoria do funcional de densidade proposta por Lee, Yang e Parr, combinada com B3LYP (BECKE 1993; LEE, et al 1998) para uma série de titanatos. Simulação de modelos periódicos foram empregados para realizar um estudo sistemático das propriedades estruturais, eletrônicas e dos materiais: BT e BT dopado com Mn e do BST para analisar a influência da desordem estrutural destes materiais; como a finalidade de contribuir para a explicação do efeito luminescente e ainda estudar a influência da dopante Mn na estrutura do BT, utilizando o programa CRYSTAL98. Com o intuito de caracterizar estas propriedades destes materiais foram analisadas as densidades de estados (DOS), densidades de cargas, densidades eletrônicas, estrutura de bandas e ainda diagrama de energia. Este estudo teórico possibilitou a identificar os níveis eletrônicos na região entre os limites superiores da banda de valência e inferiores da banda de condução com o objetivo de melhor interpretar as propriedades fotoluminescentes destes materiais na fase amorfa (estrutura desordenada). Para realizar o estudo das propriedades fotoluminescentes destes materiais foram empregados os dados obtidos pelo refinamento de Rietveld, e dois modelos periódicos de supercela foram elaborados: estrutura ordenada (fase cristalina) e estrutura desordenada (fase amorfa). Para uma outra análise foram construídos três modelos periódicos para BT teórico e do refinamento puro e do dopado com Mn. Com o intuito de propor uma nova alternativa de um modelo mecânico-quântico periódico para simular a deformação estrutural induzida pelo dopante Mn no BT. Esta modelagem possibilitou dar acesso geral do efeito do dopante na estrutura eletrônica e ainda analisar a influência do elemento dopante na disposição configuração eletrônica, sendo que o Mn não está incluído no modelo, mas os efeitos desta dopagem foram observadas com o uso dos dados do refinamento de Rietveld. Todos os resultados teóricos obtidos foram correlacionados com os resultados experimentais para melhor compreender, investigar e interpretar as propriedades destes materiais.

El proyecto de innovación educativa se denomina “análisis de caricaturas para interpretar críticamente fuentes”, este busca beneficiar a 290 estudiantes del VII ciclo del nivel secundario cuyas edades oscilan entre 15 y 17 años en el área de Historia, Geografía y Economía, el proyecto se realiza debido a la presencia de estudiantes pasivos, memoristas, acríticos, con dificultades para expresar opiniones personales respecto a situaciones del contexto y no asumen su rol activo en la sociedad como parte de su ejercicio ciudadano. El objetivo central de este proyecto se relaciona con la incorporación de nuevos procesos de aprendizajes vinculados a interpretación crítica de fuentes, pensamiento crítico, desarrollo cognitivo y el análisis de caricaturas como estrategia. Para la construcción del proyecto de innovación educativa se elaboró un análisis FODA que permitió identificar el problema, las debilidades y fortalezas; reconociendo las dificultades en la aplicación de estrategias didácticas para desarrollar la interpretación crítica de fuentes, se planteó el objetivo y las acciones a realizar, el tiempo establecido son 10 meses y su implementación considera aplicar sesiones de aprendizaje planificadas por los docentes. Al finalizar la implementación del proyecto se espera que los estudiantes interpreten críticamente fuentes de información para enriquecer la construcción de explicaciones históricas. La construcción del trabajo académico tiene dos partes: el marco conceptual y el proyecto de innovación con los anexos. Finalmente, la interpretación de fuentes diversas utilizando el análisis de la caricatura como estrategia, tiene como propósito dar respuesta desde las aulas al logro de la competencia de acuerdo al Proyecto Educativo Nacional al 2021.

According to The International Bill of Human Rights, everyone charged with a criminal offence has the minimum right to have the free assistance of an interpreter if he cannot understand or speak the language used in court. Without court interpretation, justice could not be served for the aforementioned party in the judicial system. Taiwan has adopted the scheduled court interpretation system since 2008, and has gradually provided the training program for court interpreters. However, whether the program is sufficient for court interpreters and whether the program corresponds to the ability court interpreters value or equip with are worth examining. This study adopted the quantitative method to analyze eight items in court interpretation, including the language proficiency, the equivalence in translation, the explanation for language and cultural differences, the role neutrality, confidentiality, legal knowledge, continued refinement of court interpreting skills, and professional appearance of a court interpreter. In a questionnaire, court interpreters were asked to rate the eight items from three aspects—the importance, their ability to meet the requirements, and the training from the program—on the 5-point Likert Scale. Repeated measured ANOVA and LSD were employed to analyze the data. The results showed the statistically significant difference between the mean of each item from the three aspects. The court interpreters were also interviewed to further explore their expectation for the adjustment to the program. Lastly, the study offers advice on the current program for court interpretation based on the quantitative results and qualitative interviews.

At present, Taiwan’s studies in the history of translation during the period under Japanese rule mostly focus on famous interpreters and court interpreters. However, during the period there were some unknown interpreters who were sent to the battlefront to do interpreting. They were practically forgotten in the history. This thesis compiles the historical sources about the war interpreters, explores their background and the work as interpreters, and hopes to draw attention of more researchers to them. This thesis takes four interpreters during the period under Japanese rule for example, and analyzes their national identification based on their autograph records and interviews. The four interpreters are Liao De-Cong (廖德聰), Lai Hai-Qing (賴海清), Su Zhe-Fu (蘇哲夫), and Zhang Zi-Jing (張子涇). Liao and Lai were sent to the battlefield in Guang Dong while Su and Zhang were assigned to Hainan Island. The result indicates that interpretation was indeed influenced by the ideologies (national identification) of interpreters themselves and their patrons. Ideology, including national identification, changes. It is not as solid as rock. Instead, it is more like water which is flexible and adaptive. However, how to mediate between two cultures or ideologies while fulfill the duties of communication and message transmission is an eternal issue for all translators and interpreters.

GNU-R, the standard interpreter of R, in version 3.5.0 introduced a new native API (ALTREP) for R extensions developers. The goal of the thesis is to implement this API for FastR, an interpreter of R based on GraalVM and Truffle, and explore options for optimization of FastR in context of this API. The motivation is to increase the number of extensions that can be installed and run on FastR. 1

This study focuses on Madame Chiang Kai-shek’s presence and participation at the Cairo Conference of 1943, particularly her “doubling” as a “lay interpreter,” a bilingual who plays the part despite a lack of formal training. At Cairo, she interpreted not only for her husband but also for U.S. President Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Churchill, which would be an extraordinary arrangement for today’s interpreting practitioners and researchers, for whom interpreter neutrality figures prominently. Besides neutrality, Madame Chiang Kai-shek’s doubling as interpreter also interrogates interpreter visibility and fidelity, two other defining aspects of the interpreter’s role as it has been idealized in codes of conduct and even to some extent in Interpreting Studies since its inception. A historical and archival approach is adopted; but the unavailability of primary sources—official transcripts or other direct records—leaves the study no other choice but to rely on secondary and even tertiary materials. Given that the Cairo Conference stood out as one of only a few summit meetings of Allied leaders during World War II, the study also compares Madame Chiang with other interpreters in diplomatic settings, to illustrate how she, first and foremost in her capacity as China’s First Lady, doubled as interpreter at Cairo. Like many of her counterparts, both in the past and today, Madame Chiang ended up performing extra roles—spokesperson, envoy, negotiator—while she was called upon to mediate cross-linguistic and cross-cultural interactions. But unlike almost all of her counterparts, who have mainly maintained a professional relationship with clients, Soong Mei-ling assumed, or shifted to and from, her extra roles in her capacity as wife, confidante, and political partner of the Generalissimo, and this almost unparalleled personal standing and intimacy explains her all but unique interpreting behavior and justifies a study to historicize and relativize values like neutrality, visibility, and fidelity.

Film is one of the most popular forms of mass media. It reflects reality, shapes images, and reinforces identities. As one of the biggest film industries, Hollywood films can have a significant influence on the perception of characters. This study attempts to analyze interpreters in contemporary Hollywood films to understand how they are represented to the public. Content analysis was conducted to analyze the roles of 38 interpreters from 23 films from the year 2000 to 2015. The study looked at interpreters’ images from three perspectives: demographic composition, performance and character type. The result showed that interpreters in Hollywood films were mainly male and non-professional interpreters. Over half of the interpreters were invisible, acting as conduits while some characters were designed to intervene to build up complexity among characters. In terms of narrative roles, most interpreters were static characters and helpers of the protagonist.
