Nikolaeva, Irina. Analyses of the Semantics of Mood. Edited by Jan Nuyts and Johan Van Der Auwera. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199591435.013.3.

Abstract:
This article examines the semantics of “mood”, both in the sense of the opposition among clause types, that is, “sentential/sentence moods,” or “sentential forces”, and in the sense of the distinction between realis and irrealis, or indicative and subjunctive. It begins by considering the most important sentence moods, namely, declaratives, imperatives, interrogatives, exclamatives and optatives. It then discusses the notions of realis and irrealis or indicative and subjunctive. It concludes by underscoring the importance of a study of interpretive effects in elucidating the interaction between semantics and pragmatics, since the semantics of mood appears to depend on a set of contextual clues which arise from different sources and provide non-conceptual input to the pragmatic process of utterance interpretation.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a set of small analytical case studies meant to illustrate important methodological and interpretive issues that arise in the study of chromatic film music. Five central topics organize these analyses, each with interesting ramifications for the structure and expressive content of film music: contextuality, distance, voice leading, equivalence, and patterning. Examples are drawn from a range of film composers and styles, with special emphasis placed on the idiosyncratic and influential work of Bernard Herrmann. A recurring theme throughout is that of leitharmonie—the use of chords and harmonic progressions in a motivic- and symbolic-rich fashion. Increasing emphasis is placed on hermeneutics and the issue of how music, and harmony in particular, aid listeners in structuring and interpreting filmic narrative.

Abstract:
“Interpreting Interpretations,” Chapter 6 of A New Narrative for Psychology, discusses the premises for the analysis of narratives in research in the field of psychology and in everyday life. The chapter focuses on how researchers think about narratives after the data have been collected and on how narratives should be understood and analyzed. It details an interpretative, hermeneutic approach to narrative analysis in which the interpreter is always once removed, always interpreting the interpretations of others. It argues that there are no recipes for narrative analysis, only general analytic strategies. The process of narrative analysis is one of asking questions in order to open up the data and understand the complex relationships between a particular interpretative action and the contexts of person, time, and space.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the diverse, sometimes discordant ways in which commitments to materialism have shaped feminist theoretical inquiry. Focusing on two alternative interpretive frameworks—historical materialist feminisms (HMF) and feminist new materialisms (FNM)—the chapter considers how distinct understandings of “materiality” sustain alternative accounts of agency, power, and difference. The chapter aims to highlight how these appeals to markedly different notions of a material “real” lead to markedly different interpretive grammars: one (HMF) emphasizing systematicity and the durability of structured relations, the other (FNM) emphasizing indeterminacy, flux, and the “messiness” of the world. Among the stakes identified in these interpretive differences are how physical bodies, processes of embodiment, and nature figure in feminist analyses; how the relationship between matter and representational systems is conceptualized; and whether oppression should serve as a central or secondary locus of analytic concern.

Abstract:
One critique of some common-law comparative legal academies is their intensively “court-centric” focus, which, some believe, “marginalize[s]” the role of the legislative branch. The same may be said of the extant comparative international law literature: most of it concerns the interpretive approaches of national courts. In fact, one of the field’s seminal pieces characterizes comparative international law as involving “comparative analyses of various domestic court decisions.” Not surprisingly, then, nearly all of this volume’s contributions deal mostly or exclusively with courts and judicial decisions. We agree that courts can play a large part in diversifying how international law works across different systems, but we contend that the foundation of the comparative international law project lies elsewhere. We argue that among the most important and underappreciated interpretative acts—and therefore, those currently most needing study—are the international law interpretations of national legislatures.
