Abstract:

Abstract:
As yet, few explicit, practical and easy to implement marking scales for evaluating the quality of translations have been proposed. The purpose of this study is to introduce a new marking guide for making quantitative assessments of the quality of non-literary translations, and to test its practicality through a case study using the Arabic language. On the basis of the results, some generalizations about translation and translation quality assessment are made. Early treatments which dealt with the evaluation of translations are discussed, showing their merits and defects. The new marking guide is then described, including classification of errors and examples of each type of error. Guidelines are presented for the holistic subjective assessment, the guidelines are evaluated and the outcome discussed

The purpose of this study was to investigate the interpreting services in the Parliament of South Africa (POSA). The impetus to embark on such an investigation arose after Members of Parliament claimed that the interpreting service in the Parliament of South Africa (POSA) is poor. In seeking to determine why Members of Parliament made such claims, I therefore investigated the interpreting service rendered by staff of Parliament’s Interpreting Unit. Consequently, an investigation to whether the simultaneous interpreters currently employed by Parliament of South Africa possess the amalgam of skills attributes and qualifications necessary for them to render an interpreting service of good quality. Questionnaires were distributed to Members of Parliament and to interpreters, interviews were conducted with Control Language Practitioners (CLPs), observation of recruitment panels for interpreters also followed, and interpreters were recorded during the sitting of Parliament House in an attempt to check whether interpreters do deliver an interpreting service that is up to standard. The results of this study show that Members of Parliament have a valid claim as 65% of the sample of interpreters had joined Parliament without interpreting skills and had, to date, never been sent for interpreting training and most interpreters are demoralised by the working conditions of the Language Services Section at the Parliament of South Africa.

Abstract:
New technologies, more specifically, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), are today indispensable in all professions. It is undeniable, however, that some professions have been affected to a greater extent than others.
This study describes ICTs used in conference interpreting, in both professional and educational settings. It also records the interpreters' and interpreter trainers' perceptions of ICTs, especially in terms of improving the quality of their performance and their professionalism. The data has been collected through two global surveys, both conducted mainly through questionnaires and personal interviews, and triangulated with in situ observations.
As to the results of the research, it was found that variation in use was not always due to generational or regional differences as had been expected. Conference interpreter trainers, on their part, are identifying different ways to overcome budgetary restrictions to allow students to learn about ICTs in order to better prepare them for the labor market.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Little scholarly reflection has been published on the subject of medical research and translation. The aim of this study is to contribute to such literature by investigating the quality of original and retranslated medical questionnaires. The various steps medical researchers follow when translating their questionnaires are considered and discussed. Particular attention is given to questionnaires on AIDS-related topics in South Africa, as well as to the role of translation in ensuring the collection of valid data in medical research. Different translation approaches, which are followed when translating medical texts, and the impact they have on the quality of the research, are discussed. These approaches are the linguistic, text-linguistic and functional approaches. Attention is given to translators as communicators and mediators, as well as to the more general role of the translator. This study hypothesises that the quality of translations of medical research questions is largely inadequate in communicating effectively with the target culture for which they are intended. The retranslation hypothesis stating that retranslations are closer to the source text (ST) than original translations is supported. Afrikaans- and Xhosa-speaking adolescents from two secondary schools in the Cape Peninsula participated in a before-after study. These learners received self-administered medical questions on the two occasions. The first set comprised original translations, while the second set contained retranslations of the ST questions. Evaluation questions were included to assess the quality of these translations. The design, translation approach and quality of the original translations are explained, as is the development of the retranslation and evaluation questionnaires. Translations that do not consider their target audience lead to communication gaps, which have an adverse effect on the validity of data derived from questionnaires that are used in medical research. The results of most of these questions are compared for the two target cultures and are analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The data are further explored to establish whether and how the translational quality of medical questionnaires can be improved. These aspects and the suggested translation process are discussed while bearing in mind the limitations of a study of this kind. Recommendations are made for possible improvement to the quality of translations of medical questionnaires. Projections for further studies in this direction complete this empirical investigation into translation and medical research.

Abstract:
62 non-interpreter participants and 7 interpreter participants listened to 16 different extracts of interpretations that had been initially broadcast either on TV or on the web. The participants commented and rated these recordings. Non-interpreters’ comments tend to show that the interpretation “works”, i.e. it seems to carry the speaker’s message across and does not constitute an obstacle. Comments tend to focus on form rather than content. Non-interpreters seem to pay attention to quality parameters which already feature in the literature (in particular intonation and fluidity) but also to some (supra)parameters which have rarely been studied so far: the balance between the sound levels of the original speech and its interpretation; the way the speaker is portrayed through the interpretation; and the way emotion in the source speech is conveyed in the interpretation. None of the individual parameters identified in the present study turned out to have a clear-cut, major influence on overall quality assessment. The present thesis studies not only individual quality parameters but also interactions between them. In particular, perceptions of form and content seem to be closely linked, and listeners’ trust seems to be determined by a number of both form- and content-related parameters. Some differences between the two groups of participants emerge. Interpreters seem more sensitive to wording. False errors were flagged up only by non-interpreters. Non-interpreters seem to listen to the speaker’s message first and foremost; their reactions to the interpretation itself tend to come later, if at all

Abstract:
Interpretation in both national and state parks provides more than mere entertainment to the visitor. Interpretation has been proven to be an effective deterrent to littering, vandalism and the deterioration of natural park resources. The focus of this research is to determine whether high quality programs, a large number of programs, and/or a diversity of programs offered by Indiana state parks attract a higher percentage of the total number of visitors entering a park facility to an interpretative event. The subjects need in this research were the state parks of Indiana. Data was obtained from a weekly form (SP-48) used by the Indiana parks. SP-48 forms from 1987 through 1990, Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, were used: the total number of programs incorporated into this study was 20,595. The parks were divided into categories (all parks, year-round parks, and seasonal parks) and groups (high, medium and low number of facilities) to provide a similar statistical grouping for analysis. The factors studied were paired and regression analysis were performed on each pairing. Correlation coefficients indicated that an increase in the quantity of programs offered was highly correlated (p<001) to an increase in the percent of gate entrants participating in an interpretive event. Presentation diversity was significantly related to either of the above variables.

This paper addresses the area of simultaneous interpretation, interpreting mode inserted in the field of Conference Interpreting. The purpose of this study is to verify the prosodic features of semi-spontaneous and interpreted speeches of a group of interpreters and analyze how such features may interfere in the assessment of quality and comprehension of the message delivered in interpretation. The subjects of this study were twelve female conference interpreters. The interpreters were recorded when producing a semi-spontaneous speech and during the simultaneous interpretation of a lecture. Three sampling segments representing the speech (extracted from the start, middle and end positions of the lecture) were selected. We conducted three types of assessment: an acoustic analysis of the selected speech samples, a perceptive assessment on the quality and comprehensibility of interpreters oral production, and an assessment on the quality of the content of the interpretation compared to the original lecture. Using the software Praat, we analyzed the prosodic features of interpreters semi-spontaneous and interpreted speeches acoustically, comparing them in terms of number and distribution of intonation groups and pauses; speech rate; and average, minimum and maximum fundamental frequency rates. By means of a questionnaire based on the Likert Scale applied to 90 judges, we assessed the impressive effects of interpreters oral production. Three interpreter trainers followed an assessment protocol to compare the speech produced by interpreters and the original lecture and verify completeness of original sense (S), errors (E) and omissions (O). Results were then compared for similarities and differences. This project was approved by the Brazilian Research Ethics Committee under no. 44465314.0.0000.5482

Abstract:
This thesis is an inquiry into the promotion and implementation of Japanese QCC in Singapore. The thesis aims to develop a better understanding of the QCC phenomenon and of its applicability outside Japan. The QCC as a small group activity used in promoting quality improvement among workers is examined through several theoretical frameworks: structuration theory, critical systems thinking and the notion of QCC as social technology. A historical analysis of the Japanese QCC provides an understanding of the socio-historical context in which the QCC as a small group activity evolved. The Japanese QCC system is examined, appraised and critiqued in terms of its key processes and role in quality management using Habermas's theory of knowledge and human interests and critical systems thinking. An analysis of the promotion of QCC in Singapore and of the general state of QCC activities provides a socio-historical context for five case studies of QCC implementation by Singapore firms. Using Olikowski's structuration model of technology, the thesis discusses the influence of the interactions between institutional properties and human agency on the outcomes of these firms' QCC implementation strategies. With technology viewed as a system metaphor comprising technical, social, economic and political sub-systems, the interpretive flexibility of the QCC as a social technology is underlined. QCC implementations outside Japan are viewed as incidents of technology transfer, with local inventions, which takes into account the systemic and socially constituted nature of QCC activity, essential for successful transfer. A conceptual map regarding the transfer of QCC is presented. The map incorporates the three theoretical frameworks used in this thesis. This is an attempt at modelling the processes essential for successful social technology transfer.

Abstract:
Assessing interpreting quality at the final stages of a student's training process at the postgraduate level should be, for the most part, in keeping with quality expectations for novel practitioners. On the basis of such hypothesis, and inspired by studies on quality satisfaction or users' expectations (professional approach), assessment protocols used in different training schools (academic approach), and Daniel Gile's Efforts Model, our research -empirical and observational- aims to contribute to identify quality-defining criteria in interpreting.
A large corpus was recorded and transcribed, with a total of 69 post-exercise assessments of 18 interpreters taking a specialization course in medical interpreting by 7 instructors. The assessments were scrutinized for evaluative comments which were analyzed statistically. This involved also classifying them in categories (67) and later merging them into 6 category groups. The innovation lies in the very concept of working backwards from a corpus towards implicit quality criteria, in the work on this corpus type (assessments during a postgraduate training course), in the method used to identify categories and in the further processing of the categories. The findings give some solid indications and show that assessors are not too influenced by the number of positive or negative comments they make when deciding what mark they will grant to the students.

Etheridge, Lucinda. "The trouble with culture : an interpretive case study of organisational culture, learning and quality improvement in the National Health Service." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10018723/.

Full text
Abstract:
This interpretive case study investigates the relationship between organisational culture, organisational learning and cultural change in the National Health Service (NHS). Starting from a social constructivist standpoint, it conceives of organisational culture as a dynamic entity, socially and discursively constructed through engagement with surroundings, in contrast to the managerial discourse evident in NHS policy and research literature. The conceptual framework informing the research is based on cultural historical activity theory and a three perspectives theory of organisational culture. This allows exploration of individual and collective learning within the context of organisational social and cultural practice, exploring the organisation at the macro level but also through the lived experiences of individuals. An interprofessional department in an NHS provider organisation was studied for four months as it went through a programme of service improvement. Data was collected and analysed iteratively through a combination of observation, interview, documentary reading and field notes. Analysis using an activity theoretical approach generated a „thick description‟ of the organisation. Organisational stories were analysed to explore meaning making. Findings suggest that organisational culture can be considered a shared epistemic object within fluid networks of activity. Individual and collective learning is linked through practice, mediated by external political motivations and internally generated contradictions. Understandings of professional power play a major part and can lead to unexpected directions of travel. Conceptually, the study shows activity theory to be a useful framework for analysing learning and cultural change in NHS organisations. It adds to the debate on the self and the role of power and contradiction in activity theory through the application of a three perspectives approach to culture. It can help guide practitioners and policy makers in the NHS by encouraging them to rethink their understandings of culture and how cultural change is achieved through mediated practice.

Abstract:
In the United States, approximately 59 million people speak another language other than English at home, 37 million of non-English speaking (NES) patients identified Spanish as their primary language (Flores, Abreu, Barone, Bachur & Lin, 2012; Ryan, 2013). An estimated 25.2 million have Limited English Proficiency (LEP) (Flores, Abreu, Barone, Bachur & Lin, 2012; Ryan, 2013). LEP patients are a vulnerable population with greater risk for poor health outcomes due to inappropriate provider-to-patient communication barriers (Diamond, Schenker, Curry, Bradley & Fernandez, 2009). The DNP student and a Quality Improvement (QI) team collaborated to implement a QI project using the QI Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycles model. The aim of this QI project was to increase implementation rates of interpretive resources including in-person professional interpreters or use of technological interpreter ad-hoc tools for LEP patients by 10% from baseline measure within four weeks of implementation at the UNMH- ED. The QI team applied the Vocera technical intervention ad-hoc tool to facilitate access for communication between Interpreter Language Services (ILS) and staff who are caring for LEP patient(s).The ILS dashboard results showed use of ILS in the pre-intervention month totaled 82% of ILS ED need met. In contrast, post-intervention use of ILS demonstrated an increase of 89% of ILS ED met. Thus, representing a 7% difference in ILS percent need met demonstrating to be statistically significant with a Chi-Square of 7.898 and p-value of .005. Correspondingly, a 6- month ILS need met was determined when considering the 6-month pre-intervention baseline of 76.8%. Consequently, demonstrating that the projected 10% increase of ILS ED need percent was met, the findings revealed an increase compared to baseline percent. These findings represent a 12% improvement from the pre-intervention baseline ILS ED need met. However, the analysis and results only demonstrate statistical significance but lack to indicate to be clinical significance. This QI project confirmed the intervention was effective in increasing and facilitating ILS access. Time restriction and limited time period for data collection were identified as the main limitations. The project discusses the DNP role in executing opportunity to employ systematic change models driven by QI evidence-based research for improvement in an emergency department setting.

Abstract:
In attempting to give more years of life to cancer patients, their Quality of Life (QoL) during this time has frequently been compromised. Assessment of patients’ QoL provide nurses with an opportunity to know about the whole range of patients’ needs and desires. These information would be potentially very useful for health care professionals particularly nurses for planning, conducting and evaluating the nursing care of cancer patients. Questionnaire survey research carried out in countries other than Australia identified a varied amount of agreement between cancer patients and nurses about cancer patients’ QoL. However, based on the literature review, no research study has been found in Australia that provides a detailed understanding of how nurses and cancer patients are similar or different in their perceptions of cancer patients’ QoL. A research study, therefore, was conducted to answer the following key questions: (a) what differences and/or similarities are there between patients’ and nurses’ perceptions of cancer patients’ QoL; (b) why do these differences and/or similarities exist? A research study with a mixed approach was undertaken to answer the research questions. In the first phase, a survey by questionnaire was conducted. The main aims were to identify: (a) the level of agreement between cancer patients’ and nurses’ scores on the World Health Organisation’s Quality of Life Brief questionnaire (WHOQoL-BREF); and (b) variables that may influence the level of agreement between them. Each patient and nurse was invited to complete the WHOQoL-BREF questionnaire, which was considered as an appropriate tool for evaluating cancer patients’ QoL. This questionnaire considers QoL across four domains or dimensions: physical, psychological, social relationship and environmental. In the first phase of the study, 166 cancer patients and 95 nurses were recruited from three major hospitals in Adelaide, South Australia. The patients had a range of cancer diagnoses with breast cancer being the most prevalent. Most patients were being treated as inpatients with chemotherapy being their primary treatment. The mean age of nurses was approximately 37 years and their clinical experience with cancer patients averaged approximately eight years. Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) between patients’ and nurses’ scores ranged from ‘poor’ in the social relationship and psychological domains up to ‘moderate’ in the physical domain indicating that generally nurses were different in their perceptions from those of cancer patients. Another major finding of this phase was that nurses underestimated cancer patients’ QoL in the social relationship and environmental aspects, which consisted of more personal and private issues. Having finished the first phase, the second phase was conducted based on the principles of a classical version or mode of grounded theory. The aim here was to include an interpretive perspective and explore the reasons why nurses may differ in their perceptions about cancer patients’ QoL in comparison to cancer patients. In this phase, three cancer patients and 10 nurses took part in semi-structured interviews. Participants were selected from different inpatient and outpatient oncology services and a palliative setting. Differences in patients’ and nurses’ perceptions about cancer patients’ QoL and their implications for nursing clinical practice were discussed further in the light of six important categories found in the second phase including: QoL meanings, QoL aspects, Cues-based QoL assessment; Purpose-based QoL assessment; Facilitators of QoL assessment; and Barriers to QoL assessment. It emerged that QoL has individualised meanings and nurses generally have difficulties understanding their patients’ personal perspective or definition of QoL. Another interpretive outcome that may explain why nurses differed in their perceptions when compared with cancer patients is that nurses’ assessment of cancer patients’ QoL in oncology wards is mainly made during their interaction with patients when providing care. Such an assessment has a focus on physical cues and may not facilitate nurses developing a more holistic picture of cancer patients’ QoL. Participants in the interpretive phase indicated that time limitations, focus on care tasks, and discontinuity of care, all work against nurses developing a more accurate understanding of cancer patients’ QoL. Conversely, it was found that building a relationship and stronger rapport with patients is the main facilitator in improving nurses’ understanding of cancer patients’ QoL.

Abstract:

This study used Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis to explore the lived experiences of women with autoimmune diseases who felt dismissed by their physicians when seeking diagnosis of their symptoms. Six women with medically diagnosed autoimmune diseases were each interviewed twice in a semi-structured format. Participants reported lasting harm from negative emotional and psychological states that resulted from disruptions in intrapsychic processes, including challenges to embodied material reality and self-concept due to physicians' dismissive attitudes. A description of a unique phenomenon, named here as physician dismissiveness, emerged from the data. Participants also reported that experiencing physician dismissiveness made coping with symptoms more difficult during the quest for accurate diagnosis. These findings raise important questions regarding mind-body awareness, the nature of embodiment, authority over the body, and the role of expert others in holistic functioning. Background of the study includes elements of healing theory put forth by Rogers, as well as theory of the body as described by Merleau-Ponty.

Abstract:

There have been calls both from the government and private sector for Higher Education institutions to introduce programmes that produce employable graduates whilst at the same time contributing to the growing economy of the country by addressing the skills shortage. Transformation and intervention committees have since been introduced to follow the extent to which the challenges are being addressed (DOE, 1996
1997
Luescher and Symes, 2003
Forbes, 2007). Amongst the list of issues that needed urgent address were the skills shortage and underperformance of students particularly university entering students (Daniels, 2007
De Klerk, 2006
Cooper, 2001). Research particularly in the South African context, has revealed that contributing to the underperformance of university entering students and shortage of skills are: the legacy of apartheid (forcing certain racial groups to focus on selected areas such as teaching and nursing), the schooling system (resulting in university entering students to struggle), the home language and academic language. Barrell (1998), places stress on language as a contributing factor towards the performance of students. Although not much research has been done on skills shortage, most of the areas with skills shortage require Mathematics, either on a minimum or comprehensive scale. Students who have a strong Mathematics background have proved to perform better compared to students who have a limited or no Mathematics background at all in Grade 12 (Hahn, 1988
Conners, McCown &
Roskos-Ewoldsen, 1998
Nolan, 2002).The department of Statistics offers an Introductory Statistics (IS) course at first year level. Resources available to enhance student learning include: a problem-solving component with web-based tutorials and students attending lectures three hours per week. The course material and all the necessary information regarding the course including teach yourself problems, useful web-sites and links students can make use of, are all stored under the Knowledge- Environment for Web-based learning (KEWL). Despite all the available information, the students were not performing well and they were not interested in the course. The department regards statistical numeracy as a life skill. The desire of the department is to break down the fear of Statistics and to bring about a perspective change in students&rsquo
mindsets. The study was part of a contribution to ensuring that the department has the best first year students in Statistics in the Western Cape achieving a success rate comparable to the national norm.

Abstract This study is an analysis of views of Taiwanese Professional interpreters and audience of simultaneous interpretation on the importance of ten criteria for quality interpretation output. This study uses ten existing criteria, nine from Buhler’s 1986 study and one from Zwischenberger’s study (retrieved 2016). They are: native accent, pleasant voice, fluency of delivery, logical cohesion of utterance, sense consistency with the original message, completeness of interpretation, correct grammatical usage, use of correct terminology, use of appropriate style and lively intonation. The respondents were also asked to give their reason(s) for rating particular criteria with highest importance, other important criteria, and reasons for most difficult to achieve criteria. Results show similar scoring between the AIIC groups and the two sample groups of this study. A general consistency between the two interpretation directions is observed for each criteria. However, the Taiwanese Professionals group rated four criteria with higher ratings. This is combining scores of both directions of interpreting. The scores are dependent on Criteria, Direction and Group. The scores of each direction of interpretation are dependent on the group of respondents, and scores of each criteria are dependent on direction of interpretation. This study identifies differences in views on quality criteria, in the hope of allowing students readers of interpretation become aware of these results to focus on areas of practice so to assist in producing interpreting output deemed to be of high quality by future colleagues. Since 20th Century, the conference interpreting community has been dedicating efforts in the search of “what it takes for excellence” in the profession. Regardless of the endeavors, frustrations have been experienced by the community in the pursuit of quality. With emerging efforts dedicated to understanding users, in absence of a valid quality measurement instruments that can be applied across the board, empirical studies in the field has limited comparability. In addressing this issue, this study develops a service quality model and service quality measurement instrument to measure clients’ expectations in conference interpreting service. This model and instrument is confirmed with high validity, and can be used to learn clients’ expectations on service quality in different countries for comparison. It can also be expanded by adding/revising service dimensions or attributes for interpreting services in different settings. With this model and instrument, this study goes beyond the existing quality attributes embraced by the interpreting community which focus mainly on linguistic and interpreting skill related attributes, and introduces a new dimension of conference interpreting quality—the functional quality, then proves with findings that it is equally important as the technical quality to the clients’ perception of service quality. As the first empirical study on client expectation regarding both the functional and technical quality attributes of conference interpreting, this study finds that though a “satisfactory level” of technical quality in conference interpreting is the prerequisite to positive quality perceptions and satisfaction of clients, beyond that level, functional quality starts to play a vital role. Interpreters who wish to advance their business should acknowledge the significance of functional quality, particularly the attributes related to attitude and communication. In proving the advantages of service quality in the context of conference interpreting, this study finds that the perceived service quality of conference interpreting has a positive correlation with client satisfaction, repurchase willingness, word of mouth, and price premium. These findings signify the critical role service quality plays in clients’ decision making process and imply that, to ensure client retention and gain referrals, conference interpreters need to deliver satisfactory service quality in terms of both technical and functional quality.

This paper examines social media users’ perceptions of simultaneous interpreting quality in a live streaming interpreting event on YouTube. On December 11, 2012, Harvard Professor Michael Sandel was invited by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture to give a lecture about his new book, What Money Can’t Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets. The lecture was held at a stadium with an audience of 6,000 people. At the same time, the lecture was broadcasted live on YouTube, so simultaneously there was a group of online users listening to the lecture. Because the YouTube streaming did not provide dual channels, the online audience had no choice but to listen to the simultaneous interpretation, while the original source speech was broadcasted at the backdrop at a lower volume. In other words, online YouTube audience became default absent users of the interpreting service. Most importantly, the YouTube audience not only watched Sandel’s lecture and listened to the interpreters online, but many of them posted online comments simultaneously. The comments comprised the basis of this research. A total of 233 comments from 134 unique users were collected to form a rich set of uncontrolled, natural data on users’ perception of interpreting quality. This data was closely examined to understand the different quality criteria used by different users. Overall findings show that delivery-related criteria, as opposed to content-related ones, were most often cited by the interpreting users. Context does matter, so given the highly-interactive nature of the interpreting event, the data shows that users paid much attention to prosodic features, such as fluency of delivery, smooth alternation between source and target languages, and lively intonation. Technology is another important element in this research. New electronic media has enabled interpreting events to broadcast live on-line, expanding the number of interpreting users and also changing the nature of speaker-listener-interpreter relationship. Adequate technical support is necessary in this case to ensure the quality of interpretation delivery, otherwise technical shortfall affects users’ quality perception, as reflected in a large portion of comments that preferred listening to the lecture without the interpretation.

With the electronics sports industry burgeoning, massive e-sport competitions are being held throughout the United States, Europe and Korea. Several Taiwanese companies previously specialize in PC components and peripherals have jumped on the bandwagon of this rising tide. Despite the new entrants’ best effort in developing gaming gears that would match consumers’ tastes, it has been observed that the methods taken to understand what consumers seek are relatively traditional, making it difficult to extract the more intricate sentiments of users. This research proposes that designers could gain deeper insights into the decision process of consumers through the usage of pictures. This research employs the Zaltman metaphor elicitation technique(ZMET)to investigate the deep-seated sentiments consumers hold towards gaming headsets. In the research, it is observed that when asked about their cognitive images of gaming headsets, attributes such as “dazzling”, “focused”, “comfortable”, “combative”, “professional”, “individual”, “passionate”, etc…, are few of the common constructs held by interviewees. Through further discussion, “taciturn”, “metallic”, “armed combat”, “fireworks”, “meticulous control”, and “hardened” were identified as deeper elements of the common constructs. These constructs and images can serves as invaluable references for designers when developing gaming headsets that fits consumers’ preferences. The methodology employed in this research, which was the combination of Zaltman metaphor elicitation technique, Quality Function Deployment and focus group interview, could serve as an approach designer could take in the development of new products.

Numbers have been regarded as one of the hurdles in simultaneous interpreting (SI), but empirical evidence on the effects of numbers on SI has been lacking. This study focused on isolating and examining the effects of numbers on accuracy and fluency in an experiment setting. The experiment involved 12 participants—4 practicing interpreters and 8 student interpreters. Each group interpreted one of the two versions of the speech material. The interpretation of each sentence containing a number or numbers was compared with the interpretation of a corresponding sentence without numbers but otherwise similar in meaning. The results suggest that numbers requiring number word syntax conversion adversely affected the accuracy and fluency of interpretation. In addition, numbers appearing in proximity in the speech also increased the number of hesitation phenomena in the interpretation. Together, these findings suggest that number word syntax conversion and numbers appearing in proximity pose a heavier processing requirement in SI.

Need for television interpreting has increased since the Gulf War of 1991. Breaking news in other parts of the world has also generated greater demand for use of television interpreting services. As television interpreting is considered to be a highly difficult type of interpreting, it is important to establish a standard for quality in television interpreting, and to determine if special training is required to provide quality television interpreting services. There have been many empirical studies and discussions about live television interpreting, most of which approach television interpreting from the perspective of users, i.e. television audiences. This study intends to explore views of quality and hiring decisions from the perspective of television news translators and interpreters. A questionnaire survey of 11 television news translators and interpreters shows that (1) Television news stations prefer in-house translators to professional interpreters for breaking news interpreting. (2) Training of interpreting is recommended for potential television news interpreters. (3) Special training focusing on television interpreting should be offered by educational institutions. The study also shows that working experience and training in interpreting affect the views of quality and hiring decision in television interpreting. The study also presents lists of quality standards and training curriculum from the perspective of television news translators and interpreters.

In consecutive interpreting settings, the interpreter should listen to the speech and take note at the same time, and later on render the speech in target language to the audience. Most of the time, interpreters are given choices of whether to take notes or not. This situation will then become a dilemma, especially in short consecutive setting. According to the literature review, both pros and cons of using notes in short consecutive interpreting can be inferred. The aim of the current study is to investigate how note-taking affects the interpreting performance. In the study, 24 participants were selected from mainly three graduate institutes of interpreting and translation in Taiwan. They are at least trained for consecutive interpreting for a semester, and are capable of conducting short consecutive interpreting. All of them were asked to perform a short consecutive interpreting on a passage divided into six segments. Also, the participants were asked to translate the first three segments with note-taking and the rest without. Before the experiment began, a questionnaire was given to them to collect their background and their point of view on note-taking in short consecutive interpreting. For assessing their performances, the current study adopted the evaluation chart from the Joint GITIS/GITI Professional Examination. It contains three main criteria, namely accuracy, delivery and language. The result shows that there is no significant difference in interpretation performances of subjects with different backgrounds except the factor of the years of training. However, the influence of notes in consecutive interpreting is significant. Note-taking affects all three criteria and overall performance. In other words, subject performed better in the paragraphs with notes than those without notes.

This dissertation focuses on the analysis of simultaneous interpreting from Czech into the Czech Sign Language and on mistakes which occur during this process. The terminology the author uses to describe the mistakes is derived from the taxonomy of D. Cokely (1985). Cokely's five types of mistakes in interpreting to a sign language (omissions, additions, substitutions, intrusions and anomalies), including their subtypes were also identified in the analysed texts. The work is based on the analysis of mistakes in the interpreted text, which has confirmed the hypothesis of the thesis stating that the use of free interpreting by Czech Sign Language interpreters is only marginal. The interpreters did not reflect pragmatic aspects of dialogue in an appropriate way and they did not use unique language features of the sign language either. They also heavily relied on the Deaf recipients' knowledge of the majority language. In other parts of the work the author pays attention to other specificities of mistakes made during interpreting into the sign language. These are for example sign deformation, mouth movement during the production of a sign, use of a sign in a context etc. She also focuses on an undesirable "accent", the important elements of which are sign placement, the choice of the sign, rhythm,...

Abstract:
A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of Witwatersrand in Fulfilment for the Award of the Degree of Master of Arts in Translation and Interpreting Studies, March 2017
Using the Translation Unit of the Pan African Parliament (PAP-TU) as a case study, this research set out to find a comprehensive method for assuring the quality of the translation services of non-commercial organisations. This aim is fulfilled through achieving two objectives: firstly, assessing the current situation of the PAP-TU; secondly, building a model for quality management and best practice to assure the quality of the services of the PAP-TU. In addition to solving the problem at hand, this research is motivated by exploring new areas of translation studies, engaging in the ongoing debate around the topic and contributing to the body of knowledge in this lessexplored area. To achieve the objectives of the research, a qualitative empirical study was designed to examine the correlation between ‘adopting a quality management model’ and ‘assuring translation quality’. An action research method was used to inform the outcome of the study and to provide a framework for its design. For achieving the first objective, a case study research method was used to assess the current situation of the PAP-TU. The data was collected through interviews, fieldwork observation and archival research techniques; a grounded theory technique was used for analysing the data. A modelling research method was used for achieving the second objective: creating a quality model for the PAP-TU. The study finds that the current approaches to translation quality are unable to assure the quality of the translation services of non-commercial organisations and that there is a need for a more holistic model. The main outcome of the study is the creation of a quality model for the PAPTU. The study has reached many conclusions; the most important of which are: firstly, there is a shift in the translation field from considering translation as a craft or art to professionalization and industrialisation; secondly, the study confirms the gap between translation theory and practice. The study recommends conducting more research in the field of translation quality management as a growing branch of translation studies and in freelancing as an important type of employment for translators. The study also recommends designing translators’ training programmes after studying the market to address the latest needs and trends in the market.

ABSTRACT Key words: Dropout, repetition, scholar exclusion, school quality, General Secondary School, Mozambique. This study is a school-based research into the reasons for dropout and repetition in Mozambique. The research methodology is of a qualitative nature, which enabled the exploration of relevant themes, processes and patterns that have characterized the educational process in Mozambique, especially reasons that led to repetition and dropout, during the period between 1999 and 2005. The main reasons could be found in the whole process of teaching and learning; outdated classroom pedagogy; insufficient student participation and shortage of textbooks or teachers materials; and low teachers salaries. In addition, poverty causes many students to drop out. The main conclusion is that higher levels of repetition and dropout have cost implications, inflating enrolments and adding to total costs without necessarily leading to an improvement in learners’ outcomes. Recommendations include a redefinition of the model of secondary education in accordance with the new demands of the labour market.

In Taiwan, more than 130 thousand foreign spouses face linguistic challenges everyday, which separate them from the mainstream culture. Many NPOs (Nonprofit Organizations) engage in community interpreting, the interpreting service that helps local residents overcome linguistic difficulties, to help these new immigrants gain access to their rights. However, related studies on community interpreting are scarce in Taiwan, and it is vital to understand how these NPOs define community interpreting in terms of interpreting quality and code of ethics. This study incorporates interpreting quality studies such as Bühler (1986)、Kurz (1993)、Ju(1996)、Mesa(1997, from Pöchhacker,2001)、Pöchhacker(2000)、Kadric(2000, from Pöchhacker,2001)、Tseng(2009)and interpreting code of ethics such as ICTY(1999)、AUSIT(2001)、NCIHC(2005)、NAJIT(2006)、ITI(2007)、JCC(2008)、Kelly(2008)、AACI(2011)、STIBC(2011)、ITS(2011)to survey and interview two NPOs in Taiwan: Eden Social Welfare Foundation and the Pearl S. Buck Foundation. Salamon(1995)’s Third Party Government and Voluntary Failure Theory is used to comment on the findings of this study and to provide suggestions for the government and NPOs. The findings are as follows: 1. The interviewed NPOs defined community interpreting quality in ways similar to past studies. The most valued quality items are fidelity, completeness and reliability. 2. The interviewed NPOs agree with interpreting code of ethics. The difference is the interviewed NPOs use social work ethics to regulate community interpreters, which, in their understanding, is similar to interpreting ethics. Community Interpreters have social workers’roles, and they are expected to be passionate and have empathy. 3. The definition of community interpreting of the interviewed NPOs reflected three types of voluntary failure. Philanthropic insufficiency is reflected by NPO’s lack of interpreting budget; philanthropic particularism and amateurism are manifested by the training programs. This study suggests the government to fund the NPOs, to establish cross-organizational training institution and to combine the academic to frame a code of ethics for community interpreting. NPOs should also enhance internal training on community interpreting for staff.

Abstract:
This theoretical-empirical thesis deals with the quality assessment of simultaneous interpreters done by clients not familiar with the original speech, with special regard to self-correction. The aim of this thesis is to find out what effect self-correction has on listeners who are not familiar with the content of the original speech. At the same time, the thesis tries to shed light on the influence of stress on self-correction and it wants to reveal if being under stress leads to a lower level of self-correction, or if it stimulates the interpreters. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the simultaneous interpretation in general, working conditions of a simultaneous interpreter, self-correction and it shows some of the previous investigations in the field of quality assessment of simultaneous interpreting. Also, the thesis investigates various factors that influence simultaneous interpretation and it presents mistakes typology. The empirical part of the study describes the experiment with students interpreting simultaneously from Spanish into Czech and it presents the results obtained via questionnaire surveys.

Abstract:
Text in English
Undergraduate students at the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) experience great difficulty in developing their translation competence during their training period. On the one hand, they show many signs of poor quality during their training when they accomplish practical translation assignments on and off-campus. On the other hand, the quality of the final work submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Bachelor Honours Degree (Licenciatura) suggests that most students fail to go beyond the minimum standards with regard to translation competence. Yet, comprehensive research aimed at understanding factors hindering translation competence at the UEM has been scanty. Besides, the few studies available have some significant lacunae, for they focus on Portuguese language development; are limited to error analysis, and often ignore students‟ perspectives. Consequently, the problem of finding a balanced approach to developing students‟ translation competence has remained unaddressed. Therefore, this study has been conducted with the purpose of investigating the translation competence of the UEM undergraduates in order to establish the major obstacles to their translation competence development, and consequently come up with suggestions for improving the current translator-training degree programme. The study design uses qualitative methods translated into a case study approach. First, questionnaire data is analysed to gain lecturers‟ and students‟ perspectives on translation competence at the UEM. Second, a students‟ error typology is developed following a macro- and micro-textual analysis of their translations. The study concludes that substandard bilingual skills, compounded by curricular, attitudinal/motivational, pedagogical and infrastructural/instrumental factors, negatively impact the students‟ development of translation competence at the UEM and that addressing these may pave the way towards improving the current translation-training programme.

Abstract:
The dissertation provides a comprehensive analysis of the issue of quality in simultaneous interpreting. The theoretical part explores general questions related to quality in interpreting, namely the inherent difficulties encountered in defining quality, the issue of subjectivity in the assessment of quality, the different perspectives on quality and the issues surrounding the various quality criteria as suggested by different authors. The work focuses on the cognitive processes involved in simultaneous interpreting; concepts of working memory and cognitive load are discussed as well as their connection to the concept of interpreting as a decision-making process and a strategic behaviour. Quality is therefore understood as the capacity to efficiently and effectively manage available cognitive resources and to choose appropriate strategies to solve a particular problem in a specific interpreting situation, while taking into account the overall working conditions and the individual predispositions of the interpreter. The empirical part includes an analysis of actual interpreting of technical (legal) speeches. The technical nature of the speeches and the resulting linguistic and conceptual difficulties of the input material is considered to be a factor that increases cognitive load. The aim is to...

Magaia, Armando Adriano. "In search of effective training models for Mozambican translators and interpreters." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/25292.

Full text
Abstract:
Although Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) has the longest history of BA Honours level translator and interpreter training in Mozambique, the university still lacks an effective model for the development of translation and interpreting competence in students. To address this problem, the present study seeks to find a practical model for the training of Mozambican professional translators and interpreters at BA Honours level that can guide the design of conducive curricula. The critical question the study attempts to answer is: What model for developing translation and interpreting competence could lead to an effective curriculum design that best meets the employment needs of Mozambican students? To this end, the study has been designed as action-research because this design enables better understanding and improvement of training processes (Cravo & Neves 2007). Three data collection tools are used to generate both qualitative and quantitative data from over 120 participants, namely: (i) a survey, (ii) an English translation test and (iii) a sample of archived Portuguese translations produced by former students. The survey findings suggest the need for a model whereby translators and interpreters are trained simultaneously within the same programme. Moreover, the results of macro- and micro-textual analysis show that, overall, the translation competence of former students is poor, suggesting that the current curriculum at UEM is failing to produce BA Honours translation/interpreting professionals. The proposed solution would be a curriculum based on a new integrated translation and interpreting competence development model with the following four pillars: communicative competence, general knowledge, strategic competence and service provision.
Nangona iyunivesithi iEduardo Mondlane University (UEM) inembali kwizifundo zesidanga esiphakamileyo (BA Honours) kuqeqesho lwabaguquleli neetoliki eMozambique, le yunivesithi ayikabi namzekelo unguwo nosebenzayo ekuphuhliseni izakhono zokuguqula nokutolika kubafundi bayo. Ukukhawulelana nale ngxaki olu phando lujolise ekufumaneni owona mzekelo usebenzayo onokusetyenziswa nonokuthi ube sisikhokelo kuyilo lwekharityhulam yesidanga esiphakamileyo iBA Honours esithatha iminyaka emine ekuqeqesheni abafundi babe ngabaguquleli neetoliki eziphume izandla zaseMozambique. Umbuzo ongundoqo nozanywa ukuphendulwa lolu phando ngulo: Ngowuphi umzekelo wokuphuhlisa izakhono zokuguqulela nokutolika onokukhokelela kuyilo lwekharityhulam esebenzayo nefezekisa iimfuno zengqesho zabafundi baseMozambique? Kungoko olu phando luye lwasebenzisa indlela yokuphanda ekuthiwa yi-action research eyenza kube lula ukuqonda nokuphucula iinkqubo zoqeqesho (Cravo & Neves 2007). Kuye kwasetyenziswa iindlela ezintathu zophando ukufumana ulwazi kubathathi-nxaxheba abali-120 ezizezi: (1) uvavanyo lwezimvo, (ii) uvavanyo lwenguqulelo yesicatshulwa esibhalwe ngesiNgesi kunye (iii) neenguqulelo zesiPhuthukezi ezenziwe ngabafundi bangaphambili ezigciniweyo. Iziphumo zeemvavanyo zezimvo zibonisa ukuba kufuneka kukho umzekelo onokusetyenziswa ekuqeqesheni abaguquleli neetoliki ngaxeshanye phantsi kwenkqubo enye. Ukongeza koku, iziphumo zohlalutyo lwesicatshulwa zibonise ukuba izakhono zokuguqulela zabafundi bangaphambili azikho mgangathweni, nto leyo ethetha ukuba ikharityhulam esetyenziswayo eUEM iyasilela ekukhupheni abaguquleli neetoliki ezinobuchule neziziincutshe. Isisombululo esicetyiswayo ke ngoko, sesokuba kubekho ikharityhulam ehlangeneyo eza kuphuhlisa izakhono zabaguquleli neetoliki esekelwe kwiintsika ezine ezizezi: isakhono sonxibelelwano, ulwazi jikelele, isakhono sobuchule kunye nokunikezwa kweenkonzo.
Nakuba iNyuvesi i-Eduardo Mondlane University (i-UEM) isinomlando omude kakhulu wokuqeqesha abahumushi notolika ezingeni leziqu ze-BA Honours eMozambique, le nyuvesi ayikabi nayo indlela esebenzayo yokuthuthukisa amakhono ezitshudeni kwezokuhumusha nokutolika. Ukubhekana nale nkinga lolu cwaningo kuhloswe ngalo ukuthola indlela esebenzayo yokuqeqesha ongoti babahumushi notolika baseMozambique ezingeni leziqu ze-BA Honours (iziqu zeminyaka emine) ezingahlahla indlela yokuklama uhlelo lwezifundo olungasiza kule nkinga. Umbuzo omkhulu lolu cwaningo oluzama ukuwuphendula ngothi: Iyiphi indlela yokuthuthukisa amakhono okuhumusha nokutolika engaholela ekuklanyweni kohlelo lwezifundo olungahlangabezana nezidingo zokuqasheka kwezitshudeni zaseMozambique? Ukufeza le nhloso, lolu cwaningo lusebenzisa uhlelo lokucwaninga olubizwa nge-action-research ngoba luyasiza ekuqondeni kangcono nasekuthuthukiseni inqubo yokuqeqesha (Cravo & Neves 2007). Kusetshenziswa amathuluzi amathathu okuqoqa imininingobunjalo nemininingobuningi evela kubabambiqhaza abangaphezu kwabayi-120, okuyilokhu: (i) ngohlolocwaningo (i-survey), (ii) ngesivivinyo sesihumusho sesiNgisi (iii) nangesampula lezihumusho zesiPutukezi zabafundi baphambilini. Okutholakale kulo uhlolocwaningo kuveza isidingo sendlela yokuqeqesha abahumushi notolika kanyekanye ohlelweni lokufundiswa olufanayo. Ngaphezu kwalokho, imiphumela yokuhlaziywa kwemibhalo nezimo eyabhalwa ngaphansi kwazo ibonisa ukuthi, ngokubanzi, amakhono okuhumusha abafundi baphambilini awamahle, okuyinkomba yokuthi uhlelo lwezifundo lwamanje e-UEM luyehluleka ukukhiqiza ongoti bokuhumusha nokutolika ezingeni le-BA Honours. Isixazululo esiphakanyiswayo ngesendlela entsha esuselwa ekuthuthukiseni amakhono edidiyela ukuhumusha nokutolika, enalezi zinsika ezine ezilandelayo: amakhono kwezokuxhumana, ulwazi ngokubanzi, ikhono lokusebenzisa amasu, nokuhlinzekwa kwezidingo.

Abstract:
Our theoretical-empirical thesis is dedicated to differences in the evaluation of the quality of interpreting. In the theoretical part of our thesis we describe representative studies in aforementioned field and their conclusions. We use them as a basis for the hypothesis of our own research in which we suppose that the formal aspect of an intepreter's delivery will influence the overall evaluation of the quality of his rendering and will be perceived by the respondents as a more important criterion than the logical cohesion of the speech. In the empirical part of our thesis we describe the design and development of our experiment. In this experiment different groups of respondents evaluated nine videos of an interpreter's rendering conducted under specific parameters defined beforehand. Subsequently we evaluate conclusions of our basic and test research. We conclude our work with a partial confirmation of our initial hypothesis.

Joyce, Patricia. "An Interpretive Phenomenological Exploration of Quality of Life Issues in Autologous Blood Cell Transplant Recipients." Thesis, 2005. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/528/.

Full text
Abstract:
Autologous blood cell transplantation (ABCT) has been successfully used to treat a variety of haematological cancers and some solid tumours. The number of patients who are long term survivors and free of disease following this treatment is growing rapidly. To enable nurses and health care workers to provide optimal supportive care for these patients, an understanding of how the transplant has affected their quality of life (QOL) is essential. In the last two decades numerous studies have focused on QOL issues in this patient group. However, the majority of these studies tend to approach QOL from a bio-physiological perspective, generating knowledge about the treatment and its side effects. Little is known about the patients' experiences and how they interpret their QOL in the years following their transplants. The purpose of this study was to explore QOL issues from the perspectives of 12 patients who had undergone an ABCT. Heideggerian phenomenology (interpretive phenomenology) was chosen as the theoretical framework for the study, as it allows for the transparent world of people's everyday lived experiences to be illuminated, and so reveal how they interpret their QOL. The aims of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of QOL issues through the participants interpretations of their experiences, and to uncover themes and different patterns of meaning which embody the participants' QOL. Data was collected through in-depth, unstructured interviews with each participant. Thematic analysis, exemplars and paradigm cases were utilised to present the participants' interpretations of their QOL. The findings showed that the participants' QOL was influenced by their interpretations of embodiment, being in time, being in society and re-appraisal of life. The findings also revealed that QOL following an ABCT is a highly individualised, dynamic experience that depends on the challenges the participants confront in their everyday lives. As the participants re-interpreted their lives following their transplants, their perspectives on their QOL changed. For some this was a positive experience, but for others their QOL diminished. The implication of this study is that nurses must be committed to providing individualised, patient focused care following an ABCT. The findings of this study offer a deeper understanding of patients' everyday lived experiences and their QOL following an ABCT, and will enable nurses and other health professionals to develop supportive care infrastructure to assist patients during their recoveries, thus improving their QOL.

Yushan (also known as Mt. Jade), the highest peak of Northeast Asia and Taiwan, has long drawn people to climb and “conquer” it. The managers at Yushan National Park, Taiwan have struggled to present a holistic view or at least multiple points of view of this place. Thus interpretive programs and facilities serve as the primary venues to communicate resource significance. During the summer 2006, signs on Yuhsan National Park were renewed. Thirteen interpretive wayside signs were developed and installed along the Yushan Main Peak Trail and nine wayside signs were set around Shishan Interpretive Center. These signs were developed based on five main themes: (1) Yushan, being the highest peak of northeast Asia, represents dynamic forces of Earth from plate tectonic rising to eroding landforms, (2) Alpine vegetation demonstrates various strategies of adaptation, (3) Landscape aesthetics provide opportunities for people to experience beauty and eternal joy, (4) People and her holy mountain: Cultural heritage, and (5) Yesteryears explorers, today’s climbers, tomorrow’s resource quality. A summative evaluation was used to identify the perceived themes of the wayside signs from the visitors’ perspectives. Interview results provided better understanding of the characteristics of interpretive experiences and how wayside signs influence visitors’ on-site interpretive experiences. The results also strengthened the effective of thematic interpretation. Thematic interpretation programs provided park visitors’ multiple points of views toward Yushan National Park, and have given them opportunities to make their own connections with the magnificence mountain park.
