Abstract:
Background: Nowadays, organizations deal with many challenges in their external environment due to globalization, rapid technological advancement and increasing demand expectations. One way to face these challenges is by collaborating with other organizations. In this new globalized business world interorganizational relations are present everywhere. Nevertheless, from a theoretical perspective the field of interorganizational relations is saturated with terms and concepts. Nearly all aspects of interorganizational relations have been studied, having created a veritable conceptual swamp, idea abundance and vast fragmentation and this situation is a key rationale for the design of this study. Purpose: The purpose of these thesis is to develop a concept of collaboration in interorganizational relations, meaning that there is a need for a synthesized typology model in which collaboration forms can be classified. The purpose of the thesis is fulfilled by researching and answering beforehand defined research questions, namely (1) what are the motives and risks of interorganizational relations and how can they be clustered, (2) which themes/dimensions are used to differentiate between collaborations forms, and finally, (3) can our proposed model be used to classify those collaboration forms? Method: A qualitative directed content analysis was conducted. In the thesis, text from existing research from academic journals and books in the field of business administration were used as data. Conclusion: The result of this thesis is a tentative synthesized typology model of collaboration in the context of interorganizational relations. It incorporates motives and risks of collaboration and finally seven dimensions/themes of how collaboration forms can be classified.

Cette thèse explore comment les réseaux intra-organisationnels et la collaboration inter-organisationnelle déterminent, séparément et conjointement l'innovation d'entreprise. Les organisations s'appuient à la fois sur la collaboration externe et interne pour obtenir et intégrer des connaissances sur de nouveaux produits et procédés. Les réseaux de collaboration interne entre les scientifiques en recherche et développement facilitent le partage et le transfert de connaissances tandis que la collaboration externe, via des alliances et des "joint ventures", offre accès à de nouvelles connaissances. Ce modèle a été testé empiriquement en utilisant des données de l'industrie des dispositifs médicaux en Amérique du nord entre 1990 et 2005. Contrairement aux attentes, les réseaux intra-organisationnels plus cohésifs et plus regroupés réduisent le transfert de connaissances et la diversité, ce qui réduit aussi l'innovation d'entreprise. Alors que les réseaux intra-organisationnels très connectés augmentent les effets de la collaboration inter-organisationnelle sur l'innovation d'entreprise. Cette thèse contribue à la littérature des réseaux et de l'innovation en examinant les mécanismes qui interviennent dans les effets de la structure du réseau sur l'innovation d'entreprise. Elle explore également le caractère multi-niveaux des réseaux en combinant à la fois les relations intra-entreprise et inter-entreprises pour expliquer l'innovation d'entreprise
This dissertation explores how intraorganizational networks and interorganizational collaboration, individually and jointly, shape firm innovation. Organizations rely on both external and internal collaboration to obtain and integrate knowledge in new products and processes. Internal collaboration networks among R&D scientists facilitate knowledge sharing and transfer whereas external collaboration via alliances and joint ventures provide an organization with access to new knowledge. This model is empirically tested in the North-American medical devices industry between 1990 and 2005. Contrary to the expectations, more cohesive and clustered intrafirm networks actually reduce knowledge transfer and diversity, which then reduces firm innovation. But well-connected intrafirm networks augment the effects of interorganizational collaboration on firm innovation. This dissertation contributes to the networks and innovation literature by examining the mechanisms that mediate the effects of network structure on firm innovation. It also explores the multilevel nature of networks by combining both intrafirm and interfirm relationships to explain firm innovation

Abstract:
Relationships between the collective actors within interorganizational relationships are a growing area of research in management. Interorganizational networks continue to be a popular mechanism used by organizations to achieve greater performance. Organizations develop competencies to work with other organizations, but the confidence of these organizations to use these strengths for a competitive advantage has yet to be empirically examined. The purpose of this study is to examine organizational efficacy, how competencies may related to that efficacy, and the relationship of efficacy with performance. The goal of this study is to observe the relationship among trust, dependence, information quality, continuous quality improvement, and supplier flexibility with organizational efficacy. In addition, the relationship between organizational efficacy and performance is also observed. There are two primary research questions driving this study. First, what is the relationship between trust, dependence, information quality, continuous quality improvement, supplier flexibility and organizational efficacy? Second, what is the relationship between organizational efficacy and performance? The theories supporting the hypotheses generated from these questions include theories such as social cognitive theory, quality improvement, and path-goal theory. Data collected from the suppliers of a large university support the hypotheses. Regression analysis and structure coefficients were used to analyze the data. Results indicate that both research question one and research question two are supported. In addition, the theoretical model as a whole, which indicates a mediating relationship, was examined and discussed. This study contributes to both academic and practice by examining efficacy in an interorganizational setting. In addition, as organizations better understand the relationship between competencies and confidence, they will better know how to collectively work to achieve greater results with more attention being placed on monitoring the relationship in order to experience more desired outcomes. Limitations of the current study and opportunities for future research are also discussed.

Abstract:
Interfirm governance has been the subject of buyer-supplier relationships studies for decades. Given the substantial hazards and uncertainties involved in interfirm exchanges, governance devices becomes critical in ensuring satisfactory performance outcomes. Despite the great insights provided by extant governance literature, the complexity of governance mechanisms has not been fully addressed. The goal of this dissertation is to better understand the role of contractual and relational governance in influencing interfirm co-exploration, protecting transaction-specific investments, and fostering interfirm exchanges in the challenging context of China. The first study looks at how contracts function in emerging economies in which legal institutions are underdeveloped but guanxi norms are pervasive. Drawing on transaction cost economics and institutional theory, this study disentangles two facets of contractual governance: (1) task specificity, which primarily safeguards transactions, and (2) contingency specificity, which mainly coordinates adaptations. This study examines their direct effects on exchange performance and their contingent effects, given different levels of legal inadequacy and guanxi importance. A survey of 307 manufacturer–supplier dyads in China reveals that, compared with contingency specificity, task specificity is associated with better exchange performance. However, the role of task specificity declines when the legal system is inadequate and guanxi is important. In contrast, contingency specificity is more helpful when guanxi importance is high. The second study explores how relational ties affect exchange partners’ co-exploration of novel products and processes. A tension between the strength and brokerage dimension of relational ties becomes evident during buyer-supplier co-exploration. Tie strength facilitates coordinating but creates the novelty problem; tie brokerage expands the knowledge diversity but aggravates the coordination difficulty. Drawing on the relational exchange theory, this study compares and examines the contingent value of tie strength and tie brokerage under different levels of environmental factors and exchange characteristics. The findings from a survey of 396 manufacturer–supplier dyads in China show that guanxi importance increases the effects of strength while decreases the value of brokerage. As market uncertainty increases, the role of brokerage becomes more salient. Brokerage also exerts a stronger impact on co-exploration when exchange is highly formalized, whereas tie strength has a weaker impact when exchange centralization is high.

Abstract:
This study proposes a framework for measuring and explaining partnership formation and resilience. The motivation for this study is that we currently do not understand the precise mechanism by which partnerships form or how they stay together in the face of change. The framework draws on a design view of systems to argue that partnerships manage change through boundary spanning practices that operate on multiple levels of social reality. The literature suggests that there are many different types of boundary spanning practices. Some types foster social-technical innovations called "boundary objects" while others facilitate the progressive standardization of those practices through the comparison and selection of boundary objects by social actors who are themselves transformed by their adoption of these objects. The framework proposes a way to measure partnership capacity and social learning that corresponds to the orders of boundary spanning practices. It furthermore proposes three hypotheses, one concerned with partnership formation and two concerned with resilience. The first hypothesis states that partnerships form through a convergence of boundary spanning practices and a community of practice. Convergence depends on a host of factors, including the capacity of innovators and early adopters to leverage their early successes to build additional capital to further promote and eventually institutionalize their boundary spanning practices. The second hypothesis predicts that partnerships that demonstrate a pattern of alignment practices integrating operational and strategic concerns will tend to oscillate within a defined range of partnership functions or "states" (restricted resilience). The third hypothesis predicts that partnerships that inculcate a learning culture of institutional design practices will tend to persist under a theoretically limitless range of environmental demands (general resilience). To assess the framework, four case studies of water resource management partnerships in the Columbia River Basin were carried out. Data collection centered on interviews with boundary spanners, field trips, and secondary data. The results partially confirmed the first hypothesis, while evaluations of the resilience hypotheses were inconclusive. However, boundary spanning practices were catalogued according to the various types of partnership processes to demonstrate how the methodology can be used for cross-case comparisons and theory-building.

“For us, it is very important as we generally reduce our inventories by 30%, thus we recover cash flow. It is not negligible.”

These quotes out of my case studies show that the primary goal of the implementation of Web-based applications is the achievement of transaction cost efficiencies: cost cutting, time saving, and information integration. But do they achieve such results? Sometimes they do sometime they don’t. In order to understand why, I consider it is necessary to take a different perspective from the one taken until now.

Indeed, existing studies on interorganizational information systems focus on economical and strategic issues and consider organizations as opaque entities. First, issues at hand may not be economic or strategic but social or legal. Next, they neglect that inter-organizational relationships imply a number of long-standing social interactions between individuals of each organization. Moreover, these individuals interpret the mediation project and act taking decision, implementing, or using the mediating technology – that these individuals make sense of the IT mediation project. In the present research, I propose to open the black box of organizations and explore how people sensemaking conditions the achievement of transaction cost benefits and is conditioned by the interorganizational context. My overarching research question is: How do people make sense of the Internet mediation of long-standing interorganizational relationships?

Abstract:
This study investigated the nature of communicative relationships in three organisational configurations. These configurations were the Machine Bureaucracy, the Professional Bureaucracy and the Adhocracy. The study' s purpose was to ascertain, through an investigation of rule-patterns, the relationship of organisational structure and culture to organisational communication. Its findings support the argument that while organisational structure contributes much to the Means or form by which organisations communicate, organisational culture contributes both to Meaning and Means. The rule patterns, researched through ethnographic methods, were those of thematic rules and tactical rules. The thematic rules were seen to be very important to developing organisational relationships that were balanced between 11 care and connection 11 and between "justice and autonomy''. The thematic rules were also seen to be very important in assisting an organisation's evolution. The Machine Bureaucracy, at this stage of its evolution, was trying to balance growth and integration. The Professional Bureaucracy was trying to balance purification and integration while the Adhocracy was trying to balance underlying elements adaptability and integration. These give meaning and value to the more visible communicating processes and activities. The tactical rules selected by these organisations were important because they showed that communication processes can be designed to develop accuracy of this Meaning. Furthermore, the tactical rules indicate what should be specific characteristics of effective organisational communication; these include the continual goal-seeking of Dialogue with employees and meeting their critical information needs.

A major question in the study of complex organizations is whether it is possible to develop a useful taxonomy which identifies the crucial aspects of organizations and classifies them in a significant manner. One group of typologies of complex organizations focuses on the relationship between the organization and its environment. The purpose of this thesis is to test the validity of three existing typologies of complex organizations, each of which focuses on one aspect of the relationship between organizations and their environment. The major innovation in this research is the use of block modeling, a form of network methodology, to analyze the multiplex relationships and to establish categories of organizations in six towns in Minnesota. This categorical scheme is based on groupings of organizations that share 2 similar patterns of relationships in a community network. The first part of this thesis is an attempt to discover if the three typologies being tested, which were originally developed from data on internal organizational characteristics, are relevant categorical "tools" for distinguishing among "classes" of organizations that were grouped based on the relational data from network analysis of the six Minnesota towns. Three hypotheses are presented, each associated with a different typology to be tested: Hypothesis I - based on inputs (Resource Dependence), Hypothesis II - based on throughputs (Katz and Kahn), and Hypothesis III - based on outputs (Parsonian). Each of these hypotheses predict specific inter-organizational relationships that should be present in the empirical data. A typology is considered relevant for use in this study, if the inter-organizational relationship, predicted by the corresponding hypothesis, is found to be present in the empirical data. All three typologies examined are found to be relevant categorical tools for the network data employed in this study.

The interaction of the personnel boundary in inter-firm relationship management is viewed as particularistic in China instead of universalistic as in many Western cultures. Specifically, guanxi networks, the Chinese system of inter-personal relationship, have strong strategic implications for business interactions. The practices of guanxi and the social norms associated with guanxi are complicated. On the one hand, guanxi practices can be traced back to Confucianism; on the other hand, guanxi???s significance has been changing in line with China???s economic reform. In this research, we have attempted to find what presently constitutes good guanxi in inter-firm relationship management against this dynamic backdrop. Additionally, from the transaction cost economies (TCE) perspective, we provide an analysis that guanxi-based business practices offer transaction cost advantages as an alternative to market-based practices. We argue that such advantages partially result from guanxi???s effect on the reduction of opportunist behaviors. Backed up by 97 questionnaire responses from firms in Shanghai and 15 semi-structured interviews, our study confirms that, in inter-firm relationships management, trust, affection and long-term orientation are features of close guanxi. To enhance guanxi quality, familiarization by self-disclosure and the presence of mutual benefits are also necessary, providing practical implications for business practitioners in China. Our study also indicates that guanxi business partners are expected to be obligational in business and flexible in contingencies. Opportunistic behaviors can be mitigated by adopting guanxi practices, supporting the TCE logic. In an absence of a rationalized legal system, guanxi may fill the gaps in the enforcement of the written contract.N

Den hårdnande konkurrensen mellan företag och jakten efter kostnadsbesparingar har fått vissa företag att outsourca sina stödfunktioner vilket kan vara hela eller delar av ekonomifunktionen. Av mindre företag i Sverige outsourcar cirka ett av tre och andelen är i stigande enligt Exido(2007). Trenden gäller även för stora företag enligt Deloitte (2014). Genomgångna studier, framförallt studier av outsourcingrelationer mellan större företag, utförda antingen explicit på outsourcingrelationer eller det bredare begreppet interorganisatoriska relationer visar att det finns områden som är återkommande i forskningen. De benämns som nyckelområden i denna studie och är kontrakt, kontroll, relation, förtroende, kostnad, kvalitet och kompetens. Jag har beskrivit och analyserat fyra outsourcingrelationer där hela eller delar av ekonomifunktionen outsourcas från det outsourcande företagets synvinkel med syfte att undersöka om det finns nyckelområden som är viktigare än andra för att outsourcingen ska anses lyckad. Empiriska data har samlats in genom intervjuer med fyra personer i ledande befattningar hos outsourcande företag i Sundsvallsområdet. Resultatet tyder på att det finns nyckelområden som anses vara viktigare än andra vilket för respondenterna i denna studie är kompetens, framförallt, och kvalitet. Anledningen till att kompetens bedöms som det viktigaste nyckelområdet är att kompetens saknades internt och att den anses driva andra nyckelområden som t.ex. kvalitet. Det minst viktiga området för en lyckad outsourcingrelation visade sig vara kontraktet.
The increasing competition between companies and the hunt for cost savings have driven some companies to choose outsourcing for a part of or all of the support functions within the financial function. For smaller companies in Sweden one out of three are outsourcing and the trend is increasing according to Exido (2007). The increasing trend also applies to big companies according to Deloitte (2014). Outsourcing studies reviewed, mainly studying the outsourcing relationship between big companies, either explicit on outsourcing relationships or the broader concept of interorganizational relationships have shown that there are areas of outsourcing relationships that are recurring in the field of research. These are referred to as key areas in this study and are contract, control, relationship, trust, cost, quality and competence. I have described and analysed four outsourcing relationships from the perspective of the company using outsourcing with the purpose to investigate whether there are key areas that are more important than others for the outsourcing to be deemed as successful. Empirical data have been collected through interviews with persons in management position at companies that use outsourcing in the Sundsvall area. The result of this study indicates that there are key areas that are more important than others for companies utilizing outsourcing. For the participants in this study these are foremost competence and secondly quality. The reason why competence is the most important key area is that the companies lacked internal competence and because competence is deemed to drive other key areas, e.g. quality. The least important key area for a successful outsourcing relationship turned out to be the contract.

Abstract:
Archaeological fieldwork at the William Conner House Site, home of an early 19th century entrepreneur, was performed in 1990 by Ball State University. The house, listed in the National Register, was built in 1823, occupied until ca. 1916, restored in 1934, and has since functioned as a house museum. Although restoration disturbed portions of the site, substantial undisturbed remains were found to exist on-site. Archaeological testing yielded 26,000+ archaeological specimens and revealed 22 features, including a possible outbuilding, cobble walk, brick pad, fire pit, small refuse pit, and post holes/molds. Herein, the Conner House is described and the history of its usage is recounted. The archaeological research design and methods are explained. Results of investigation are presented. Socioeconomic status theory and indicators are identified, and the site is compared to other 19th century residential sites, socioeconomically. Conclusions are stated. Sites to which the Conner Site is compared are described in an appendix. A glossary is provided.

Environmental Planning theory tells us that continued improvement in environmental outcomes will require new approaches that are voluntary; behavior change will come from within organizations, not imposed from outside. The concept of sustainability fits in this new phase of environmental planning and policy. In order for organizations to be successful in achieving sustainability goals, they must create an organizational context that produces innovative ideas (considered a strength of organic or learning organizations), along with an organizational context that effectively manages and implements continuous change (considered a strength of bureaucratic organizations). Effectively striking this balance appears to be a key component of making progress in sustainability for large public organizations. The research completed through this doctoral dissertation addresses gaps in the literature by asking the question: How have large public organizations implemented sustainability programs? A multiple case study design was used that examined three large public organizations that have adopted sustainability goals and established programs for achieving these goals. The data were analyzed based on a conceptual framework that predicts the types of activities and attributes organizations will exhibit to successfully achieve sustainability goals. The results demonstrate that sustainability implementation in these organizations is dependent upon leadership support, cross-functional teams, orientation to the external environment, effective management systems and consistent support over time. Bureaucratic organizations are structured to effectively accomplish the core mission, but if they also want to be more sustainable, they must adopt and promote more organic attributes to enable change, learning and innovation.
