(cont.) to encourage the interconnection of planning and mainstream information technology. We find that the PAMML framework can lower costs by leveraging mainstream technology, simplify the most basic data sharing activities, yet still allow organizations with different levels of technical sophistication to collaborate. PAMML captures the semantics of spatial planning problems, allowing them to be decomposed into fundamental information processing operations. Regarding user interfaces, we show that PAMML's structure allows multiple end user applications aimed towards different audiences to be easily built from the same core PAMML document.
This thesis examines systemic problems with the way information is managed and processed in planning support systems. We find evidence of these problems when we attempt to: develop an analysis without spending most of the time gathering and organizing data sets; or build an analysis that can be re-run at low cost; or implement systems that interact collaboratively with those of other experts. This research starts with the hypothesis that these problems are related and systemic, and that a new paradigm of information management is needed if we can hope to address them effectively. The research is divided into two main sections. First, we develop a theory about how information flows within and across planning organizations, and use the MassGIS buildout analysis to understand how physical planning is done in a cross-jurisdictional, real-world setting. We find that modern organizations do are good at creating and disseminating information, but find it difficult to keep users' copies of published information up-to-date. Furthermore, the technology for building interactive front-ends to analytic models is poorly matched to user needs, and the technology for enabling cross-organization collaborative analysis is non-existent. In the second part of the thesis, we re-architect the information framework, guided by our new theoretical foundation and findings from practice. This new framework is based on Web services, an emerging technology for connecting information systems across organizations. It is called the Planning Analysis and Modeling Markup Language framework, or PAMML, consisting of an information processing vocabulary expressed in XML Schema, Web services based on the schema, and guidance on how to best use the framework

Arockiasamy, Britto N. "Trustworthiness of Web Services." UNF Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/531.

Full text
Abstract:
Workflow systems orchestrate various business tasks to attain an objective. Web services can be leveraged to handle individual tasks. Before anyone intends to leverage service components, it is imperative and essential to evaluate the trustworthiness of these services. Therefore, choosing a trustworthy service has become an important decision while designing a workflow system. Trustworthiness can be defined as the likelihood of a service functioning as it is intended. Selection of a service that satisfies business goals involves collecting relevant information such as security mechanisms, reliability, performance and availability. It is important to arrive at total trustworthiness, which incorporates all of the above mentioned multi-facet values relevant to a service. These values can be gathered and analyzed to derive the total trustworthiness of a service. Measuring trustworthiness of a service involves arriving at a suitable value that would help an end-user make a decision for the given business settings. The primary focus of this thesis is to gather relevant details and measure trustworthiness based on inputs provided by the user. A conceptual model was developed after extensive literature review to identify factors that influence trustworthiness of a service. A mechanism was created to gather concept values for a given service and utilize those values to calculate trustworthiness index value. A proof-of-concept prototype was also developed. The prototype is a web-based application that implements the mechanism to measure the trustworthiness of the service. The prototype was evaluated using a scenario-based analysis method to demonstrate the utility of the trustworthiness mechanism using three different scenarios. Results of the evaluation shows that trustworthiness is a multidimensional concept, the relevant conceptual values can be collected, a trustworthiness index value can be calculated based on the gathered concepts, and a trustworthiness index can be interpreted to select the most relevant service for a given requirement.

Chuindja, Ngniah Christian. "Application of Web Mashup Technology to Oyster Information Services." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2012. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1568.

Abstract:
Web mashup is a lightweight technology used to integrate data from remote sources without direct access to their databases. As a data consumer, a Web mashup application creates new contents by retrieving data through the Web application programming interface (API) provided by the external sources. As a data provider, the service program publishes its Web API and implements the specified functions. In the project reported by this thesis, we have implemented two Web mashup applications to enhance the Web site oystersentinel.org: the Perkinsus marinus model and the Oil Spill model. Each model overlay geospatial data from a local database on top of a coastal map from Google Maps. In addition, we have designed a Web-based data publishing service. In this experimental system, we illustrated a successful Web mashup interface that allows outside developers to access the data about the local oyster stock assessment.

Abstract:
As the number of Internet-connected devices rapidly grows, it has become ever more challenging to develop and maintain purpose-made tightly integrated distributed embedded systems. Instead, the Internet of Things (IoT) approach, based on standardized interfaces and open communication protocols, enables support for various applications with the possibility of extension to provide additional services that were not necessarily available at the initial deployment. This thesis presents methods and tools for the development of standard-based Web services for the Internet of Things. Some of the key challenges in using Web services on resource-constrained devices are due to the overhead of the communication protocols, which leads to the need for greater network bandwidth, processing power, and memory usage. A common solution to these problems is to use gateways that translate between the protocols used on one end of the connection (i.e. low-capability devices) and those on the other end (i.e. powerful Web servers). However, this increases the overall complexity of the system. The work presented herein answers the following research questions: 1) Is it feasible to deploy standard Web services on IoT systems without using application layer gateways? 2) What are the trade-offs in using Web services for end-to-end interoperability of resource-constrained embedded systems? 3) What levels of efficiency and functionality can be achieved using binary coding schemes for XML data exchange? The research questions are tested by building and evaluating several prototype IoT systems. These evaluations show that the use of Web services requires more powerful hardware (i.e. CPU and RAM) and a larger form factor in exchange for better interoperability compared to the use of ad hoc application protocols. The main challenge in employing embedded Web services is the large size of the messages, which is due to the use of verbose data formats such as XML. Although it is shown that it is possible to deploy XML-based Web services on low-capability devices without application layer gateways, this approach has severe performance limitations. Using the Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) binary coding scheme overcomes some of these limitations by substantially reducing the size of the XML messages. The main outcome of this thesis is the design and implementation of a software toolkit, called EXIP, for building EXI-based embedded Web services. The trade-offs in the use of embedded Web services are likely to change in the near future as the importance of application layer interoperability increases and IoT devices become faster, more energy efficient, and equipped with more memory. The dominating importance of interoperability can be seen in highly heterogeneous systems such as energy management systems (i.e. smart grids), where embedded Web services are already in use today. With this in mind, future research directions and extensions of this work include the development of performance optimization strategies for the EXIP toolkit to foster the expansion of embedded Web services to an even wider range of IoT applications.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Scientific databases often need to be accessed from a variety of different applications. There are usually many ways to retrieve and analyse data already in a database. However, it can be more difficult to enter data which has originally been stored in different sources and formats (e.g. spreadsheets, other databases, statistical packages). This project focuses on investigating a generic, platform independent way to simplify the loading of databases. The proposed solution uses Web services as middleware to supply essential data management functionality such as inserting, updating, deleting and retrieval of data. These functions allow application developers to easily customise their own data entry applications according to local data sources, formats and user requirements. We implemented a Web service to support loading data to the Germinate database at the New Zealand Institute of Crop & Food Research (CFR). We also provided language specific client toolkits to help developers invoke the Web service. The toolkits allow applications to be easily customised for different platforms. In addition, we developed sample applications to help end users load data from their project data sources via the Web service. The Web service approach was evaluated through user and developer trials. The feedback from the developer trial showed that using Web services as middleware is a useful approach to allow developers and competent end users to customise data entry with minimal effort. More importantly, the customised client applications enabled end users to load data directly from their project spreadsheets and databases. It significantly reduced the effort required for exporting or transforming the source data.

Al, Asswad Mohammad Mourhaf. "Semantic information systems engineering : a query-based approach for semi-automatic annotation of web services." Thesis, Brunel University, 2011. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5441.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been an increasing interest in Semantic Web services (SWS) as a proposed solution to facilitate automatic discovery, composition and deployment of existing syntactic Web services. Successful implementation and wider adoption of SWS by research and industry are, however, profoundly based on the existence of effective and easy to use methods for service semantic description. Unfortunately, Web service semantic annotation is currently performed by manual means. Manual annotation is a difficult, error-prone and time-consuming task and few approaches exist aiming to semi-automate that task. Existing approaches are difficult to use since they require ontology building. Moreover, these approaches employ ineffective matching methods and suffer from the Low Percentage Problem. The latter problem happens when a small number of service elements - in comparison to the total number of elements – are annotated in a given service. This research addresses the Web services annotation problem by developing a semi-automatic annotation approach that allows SWS developers to effectively and easily annotate their syntactic services. The proposed approach does not require application ontologies to model service semantics. Instead, a standard query template is used: This template is filled with data and semantics extracted from WSDL files in order to produce query instances. The input of the annotation approach is the WSDL file of a candidate service and a set of ontologies. The output is an annotated WSDL file. The proposed approach is composed of five phases: (1) Concept extraction; (2) concept filtering and query filling; (3) query execution; (4) results assessment; and (5) SAWSDL annotation. The query execution engine makes use of name-based and structural matching techniques. The name-based matching is carried out by CN-Match which is a novel matching method and tool that is developed and evaluated in this research. The proposed annotation approach is evaluated using a set of existing Web services and ontologies. Precision (P), Recall (R), F-Measure (F) and Percentage of annotated elements are used as evaluation metrics. The evaluation reveals that the proposed approach is effective since - in relation to manual results - accurate and almost complete annotation results are obtained. In addition, high percentage of annotated elements is achieved using the proposed approach because it makes use of effective ontology extension mechanisms.

Abstract:

For now, vastly growing Web-technology has matured enough to become an attractiveplatform for business applications and organizational information systems. Indeed, largeand small organizations are increasing their investment in Web-based Information Systems(IS) resources, such as Electronic Commerce, Intranets and Extranets. As DIWA(1999) explained that Web technology is often presented as a 'revolution' in informationsystem technologies in the business press, which could propel change from static, hierarchicalstructures to more dynamic, flexible and 'knowledge-based' organizationalforms. To the companies, more and more legacy information and database systems arebeing migrated to Web-based environments.

This research aims to analyse and advise enterprises to be Web-based enterprise withchallenges and opportunities.

During the research, the author investigated a company that were using the Web-based(applications made available via the World Wide Web) information service. For obtainingreliable conclusions and delivering valuable advises, various research methods wereadopted by the author including qualitative research methodology, analysis, interviews, and literature study. Data was collected through lecture review and in-depth interviews.

Undoubtedly, there are some troubles existed in migrating, such as technologies for restructureinformation system structure, resource distribution, benefit analysis, planningand management, operation and maintenance etc.

But still obviously, as the research shows that there are many benefits can be got followsthe implementation of Web-based solution, which includes improving efficiency, modernizing company IT environment, providing better IS/IT systems’ maintenanceand providing more agility and functionality etc.

Abstract:
Implementation of distributed parallel algorithms on networked computers has always been very difficult until the introduction of service-oriented architectures (SOA) like JavaSpaces service, CORBA services and Web Services. Algorithms of the type Master/Worker pattern are implemented with relative ease using the SOAs. This project analyzes the performance of such algorithms on three contemporary SOAs namely JavaSpaces service, CORBA services and Web Services. These architectures make the implementations of distributed algorithms reasonably fault tolerant and highly and dynamically scalable. Also, the systems built on these architectures are generally loosely coupled and operate asynchronously. In this project we measure and analyze the latency, speed-up and efficiency metrics of an insertion sort of 0 (n^2) complexity on all the three SOAs. We then draw conclusions of overall performance and scalability on all the three architectures.

Abstract:

Nowadays, the need for sharing information between different systems in a secure manner is common, not only in the corporate world but also in the military world. This information often resides at different locations, creating a distributed system. In order to share information in a secure manner in a distributed system, credentials are often used to attain authorization.

This thesis examines how such a distributed system for sharing information can be realized, using the technology readily available today. Accounting to the results of this examination a basic system is implemented, after which the overall security of the system is evaluated. The thesis then presents possible extensions and improvements that can be done in future implementations.

The result shows that dynamic roles do not easily integrate with a single sign-on system. Combining the two technologies leads to several synchronization issues, where some are non-trivial to solve.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Information Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2007
Over a period spanning approximately twenty five years Information Systems (IS) researchers have been plagued by the problem of how to evaluate IS effectiveness or success. After the advent of the World Wide Web (WWW) in the 1990s, questions have arisen regarding the relevance of previously established evaluation approaches to the evaluation of web-based IS. Subsequently, firms have invested billions of dollars anually in information systems but the lack of appropriate frameworks for evaluating their effectiveness made it difficult to determine the return on IS investment. In a period spanning 20 years IS researchers proposed a diverse number of approaches e.g. the communications research of Shannon and Weaver (1949) and the information "influence theory" of Mason (1978). These were subsequently incorporated into a single model in 1992, called the IS Success Model (Delone & McLean, 1992). The principal objective of this research project was to develop a generic methodology for web-based Information Systems (IS) success evaluation from a multi-stakeholder perspective for specific IS contexts. The Delone and McLean IS Success Model (Delone and McLean, 1992) provides an underpinning framework for measuring IS effectiveness. In the latter 1990's the concept of service-quality was introduced into the IS effectiveness literature. In their updated IS Success Model, Delone and McLean (2003) then included service quality as key measure in the evaluation of IS success. Consequently this research project focused on how service quality concepts could be applied as a measure of IS effectiveness within e-commerce. A 3-pronged approach to IS evaluation was proposed viz. identification of generic stakeholder groups such as e-Customer, sponsoring manager, internal users etc.; identification of the context of the IS evaluation for each stakeholder i.e. what is the main function and context of operation of the IS; and lastly identification of stakeholder specific e-SQ criteria. The study demonstrates that the success of IS deployed within online environments, could be evaluated and measured differently by each stakeholder for the various e-Service Quality (e-SQ) dimensions within a particular IS context. The study presents the results of an investigation into a web-based IS at a national telecommunications company in South Africa which was evaluated using e-Service Quality (e-SQ) constructs. The study demonstrates the operationalisation of an e-SQ instrument for the purposes of evaluating IS effectiveness amongst multi-stakeholders. Evidence is provided that measuring attitudes of different stakeholders provides a more holistic perspective of IS success. The primary conclusion reached is that by using a step-by-step methodology of IS success measurement, the objective of establishing whether companies have received a return on web-based IS investment, can be achieved. Furthermore, the outcomes of the study has contributed to existing literature on IS effectiveness measurement. In particular, it will add to the existing body of knowledge regarding the use of e-SQ instrument to evaluate multi-stakeholder perceptions.

Abstract:
Data exchange between different information systems is a complex issue. Each system, designed for a specific purpose, is defined using a vocabulary of the specific business. While Web services allow interoperations and data communications between multiple systems, the clients of the services must understand the vocabulary of the targeting data resources to select services or to construct queries. In this thesis we explore an ontology-based approach to facilitate clients’ queries in the vocabulary of the clients’ own domain, and to automate the query processing. A governmental inter-department data query process has been used to illustrate the capability of the semantic approach.

Abstract:
This research grew from two frustrations. The first was the personal frustration experienced when attempting to find information on websites; especially government websites. Often the sites were loaded down with all sorts of information such as corporate organisation charts and press releases but lacked the information which would allow clients to interact effectively with the agency or meet their information needs and move on. The second frustration was that of Edith Cowan University students who battled with a diverse, overlapping and incomplete set of both online and paper based resources as they sought to make decisions about their selections of supporting studies. Both frustrations arose from a lack of user centeredness in the design and construction of the information services provided. A solution would be to establish an effective and efficient method to find out what information users of online information services really needed in order to solve the problems which brought them to the sites in the first place. The sense-making metatheoretic approach of Brenda Dervin with its accompanying timeline interview methodology suggested itself as an in-depth way to elicit the information needs of potential users of online information services. However, timeline interview protocols require long, complex and highly structured interviews. This study, as a result, developed as a critical review of sense-making in the context of the timeline interview by comparing the insights into information needs obtained from timeline interviews with those of three, more widely used, information gathering methods; survey, semi-structured interview and focus group. Students, mainly from the Edith Cowan University Schools of Communication and Multimedia and Computer and Information Science, were asked about their information needs in relation to choosing supporting studies as required by their course structures. All data collection methods were analysed using the same qualitative content analysis techniques. The outcome showed a high degree of consistency between the information needs elicited by all four data collection methods. In addition, the timeline interviews did not identify any major information needs not found by the alternative methods. Another notable finding was that respondents to all four data collection methods expressed a strong preference for speaking to a real live person as a way of meeting their information needs. This goes against conventional view of the technology preferences of younger people. The time and resources required to carry out and analyse the timeline interviews were also much greater than for any of the other data collection methods. The implications for the designers of online information services are that many people are perfectly capable of explicating their information needs regardless of the way in which those needs are elicited. That being the case, the cheapest and quickest method chosen is likely to provide useful insight into information needs. A final implication is that online services which provide links to real people via technologies such as social networking , voice or video contact are the most likely to give users a feeling of assurance about the information they obtain

With the proliferation of Internet, ERP systems like all the domains of Information Technology have known an important evolution. This final thesis project is a study about the evolution of ERP systems, more precisely about their migration to the Web giving birth to a new generation of systems: the Web-Based or Web-enabled ERP systems. This migration to the Web is justified by the difficulty of making possible the communication between partner’s legacy systems and the organizations’ ERP systems. A historical evolution of these systems is presented in order to understand the reasons that lead vendors to adopt the Web Service Technology. Based on different studies, the main technologies such as Web services, Service-Oriented Architecture and Web Application server are also presented. From an interpretative research approach mySAP ERP has been chosen as a case study. This Master’s thesis has been led into AIRBUS France Company within the framework of the SAP Customer Competence Center (SAPCCC) Web site project. The project is aimed at re-building the SAPCCC Web site. The new characteristic of the Web site is to make it accessible by all AIRBUS partners working with SAP applications. To make the Web site accessible by the partners from their own applications located on their own platforms the development has been done thanks to mySAP ERP which is an ERP using the Web service technology. Finally, this thesis presents a comparative study between traditional ERP systems and the new generation of Web-based ERP systems.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the web services and mobile technology advance to a whole new level. These technologies make the modern communication faster and more convenient than the traditional way. People can also easily share data, picture, image and video instantly. It also saves time and money. For example: sending an email or text message is cheaper and faster than a letter. Interactive communication allows the instant exchange of feedback and enables two-way communication between people and people, or people and computer. It increases the engagement of sender and receiver in communication. Although many systems such as REDCap and Taverna are built for improving the interactive communication between the servers and clients, there are still common drawbacks existing in these systems. These systems lack the support of the branching logic and two-way communication. They also require administrator’s programming skills to function the system adequately. These issues are the motivation of the project. The goal is to build a framework to speed up the prototype development of mobile application. The MABIC support the complex workflow by providing conditional logic, instantaneous interactivity between the administrators and participants and the mobility. These supported features of MABIC improve the interaction because it engages the participants to communicate more with the system. MABIC system provides the mobile electronic communication via sending a text message or pushing a notification to mobile’s device. Moreover, MABIC application also supports multiple mobile platforms. It helps to reduce the time and cost of development. In this thesis, the overview of MABIC system, its implementation, and related application is described.

Abstract:
Recommender systems support online customers by suggesting products and services of likely interest to them. Research in recommender systems is now starting to recognise the importance of multiple selection criteria and the role of customer context in improving the recommendation output. This thesis investigates the inclusion of criteria and context information in the recommendation process. Firstly, a novel technique for multi-criteria recommendation is proposed. It assumes that some selection criteria for an item (product or a service) will dominate the overall rating, and that these dominant criteria will be different for different users. Following this assumption, users are clustered based on their criteria preferences, creating a “preference lattice”. The recommendation output for a user is then based on ratings by other users from the same or nearby clusters. Secondly, a context similarity metric for context aware recommendation is presented. This metric can help improve the prediction accuracy in two ways. On the one hand, the metric can guide the aggregation of the feedback from similar context to improve the prediction accuracy. This aggregation is important because the recommendation generation based on prior feedback by similar customers reduces the quantum of feedback used, resulting in a reduction in recommendation quality. On the other hand, the value returned by the context similarity metric can also be used to indicate the importance of the context information in the prediction process for a context aware recommendation. The validation of the two proposed techniques and their applications are conducted in the service domain because the relatively high degree of user involvement attracts users to provide detailed feedback from multiple perspectives, such as from criteria and context perspectives. In particular, hotel services and web services areas are selected due to their different levels of maturity in terms of users’ feedback. For each area, this thesis proposes a different recommendation approach by combining the proposed techniques with a traditional recommendation approach. The thesis concludes with experiments conducted on the datasets from the two aforementioned areas to evaluate the proposed techniques, and to demonstrate the process and the effectiveness of the techniques-based recommendation approaches.

Abstract:
The World Wide Web provides a well standing environment in any kind of organizations for exposing online products and services. However, no one ensures that web products or services which provided by organizations or enterprises, would receive the proper visibility and accessibility by the internet users. The process of Search Engine Optimization examines usability in design, architecture and content that an internet-based system has, for improving its visibility and accessibility in the web. Successful SEO process in an internet-based system, which is set under the paternity of an organization, ensures higher recognition, visibility and accessibility for the web services that the system provides to internet users. The aim of this study characterized with a trinity of axes. In the first axe, an internet-based system and the web services that provides is examined in order to understand its initial situation regarding its visibility and accessibility in the web. In the second axe, the study follows a user-centric approach on how and in what way the examined system could be improved based on its users’ needs and desires. After the encapsulation of needs and desires that the users expressed as regards the usability of the system in design, architecture and content, the third axe takes place. In the third axe, the extracted needs and desires of users are implemented in the under-examined system, in order to understand if its visibility and accessibility has improved in the World Wide Web.For the completion of this trinity of axes, the Soft Systems Methodology approach is adopted. SSM is an action-oriented process of inquiry which deals with a problematic situation from the Finding Out about the situation through the Taking Action to improve it. Following an interpretative research approach, ten semi-structured interviews take place in order to capture all the participants’ perceptions and different worldviews regarding of what are the changes that they need and desire from the examined system. Moreover, in this study, the conduction of three Workshops, constitute a cornerstone for implementing systemically desirable and culturally feasible changes where all participants can live with, in order to improve system’s visibility and accessibility in the internet world. The results indicate that the adoption of participants’ needs and desires, improved the levels of usability, visibility and accessibility of the under examined internet-based system. Overall, this study firstly contributes to expand the knowledge as regards the process of improving the visibility and accessibility of internet-based systems and their web services in the internet world, based on a user-centric approach. Secondly, this study works as a practical toolbox for any kind of organization which intends to improve the visibility and accessibility of its current or potential web services in the World Wide Web.

Abstract:

eHealth has been adopted by many countries across the globe in response to cut down cost and improve the quality of life. Sweden has been engaged in providing web-based health care services for its citizens for the past decade and county councils have the responsibility to develop them. The main aim of this thesis is to present answers to the following research questions:What strategies (formal and informal) guide the development of web-based health care services provided by the Swedish county councils? What barriers exist in relation to the development and usage of web-based health care services provided by the county councils from the viewpoint of their IT leaders? From the perspective of IT leaders in the county councils and in their capacity to develop, manage and monitor their organizations‘ website content, which web-based health care services are mostly accessed by users and what age group utilize the services most? The thesis is an exploratory research conducted through a survey based on a mail questionnaire that was posted to all 21 county councils in Sweden with 18 councils responding. The results show that all county councils have formally adopted the National eHealth Strategy to guide the development of web-based health care services and some have other informal strategies as well. Technological barriers, resistance to use the web-based services and changing business process to integrate ICTs have been identified by IT leaders as major challenges that impede the development of web-based health care services in Swedish county councils. Swedish citizens more frequently access prescription renewal and booking and cancellation of appointments than other available web-based health care services which depicts a trend towards the use of advanced interactive services than basic information seeking, and people in the ages of 46 to 55 have been identified as the frequent users of web-based health care services according to IT leaders from the county councils.

Very few organizations are nowadays able to survive without establishing partnerships with other organizations. Therefore, the utilization of inter-organizacional information systems, used to support those partnerships, will bring huge benefits to ali parties involved. A difficult challenge for any sénior manager of an organization is to determine whose the best investments are suitable for the existent information systems architecture. The identification of ali potential benefits that the investment made in a new information system may bring, is itself a fundamental work that will help the organization to have a better application portfolio and to maximize the investment made. This investigation study aims to contribute finding a better process of identifying the potential benefits that the introduction of a new inter-organizacional information system may offer to the entities involved. It is studied the case of the implementation of an inter-organizacional information system of electronic medicai prescription in Portuguese territory. The information system in analysis allows the interchange of information conceming medicai prescriptions, between the health care system, the prescriptive entities, the pharmacies and the patients. In order to identify the potential benefits of that information system, it was developed a framework, specially designed for inter-organizacional information systems, that helps the managers in the process of identifying the potential benefits arisen by the implementation of a system like this.

Abstract:
Services on the Internet are not a new concept. There are countless suppliers of various types of services, online stores, and portals. When creating Web services it can be hard to predict how it will be used once launched. The time between idea and finished product time is rarely prioritized for design of good usability. Good usability is important because it provides increased productivity and other business benefits in terms of fewer errors and better quality. This study deals with how to evaluate Web services based on how users perceive quality and how it meets their needs of user satisfaction. The study also deals with how to conduct an evaluation, partly theoretical and partly practical through the use of a survey. The purpose is to explain what quality of service is and what aspects affect how users experience it. The study has a real presence in that an evaluative survey is conducted on a Web service created for estate agents by Valueguard AB.The study is conducted using questionnaires answered by active users of the web service. Various aspects that affect the quality was investigated and resulted in a clear correlation between perceived quality and satisfaction. It was also confirmed that usability has a very large impact on perceived quality.

Abstract: The increasing amount of data in the most diverse digital libraries applications makes the process of finding relevant digital objects a challenging task. From this perspective, recommendation techniques can provide, according to user preferences, relevant digital objects stored in a digital library. This dissertation focuses on recommendation techniques and their interactions with digital libraries applications. A platform for recommendation services, called RecS-DL, has been proposed to support the use of recommendation tools. The proposed RecS-DL Platform is independent of application domain, technology, and recommendation techniques. The recommendation services offered by the platform can be easily incorporated into digital libraries systems. Furthermore, new recommendation engines can also be plugged into the platform in a dynamic way. This work also presents a formal specification of the proposed platform, using the 5S Framework. To do this, new definitions and extensions of this framework are proposed. Finally, we present the results obtained from tests performed with the platform. Experiments were conducted considering real digital libraries and evaluations made by potential users. Experimental results confirm that the platform facilitates the interoperability of recommendation tools in digital libraries systems

Full text
Abstract:
Motivated by the belief, 'to serve existing consumers costs less than acquiring new consumers', firms' marketing strategies then evolve around retaining consumers and building long-term consumer relationships. In the pursuit of acquiring consumer loyalty, enhancing consumer value has been the focus of many firms' relationship building efforts. Hence, this study aims to understand the affect of using the Internet as a relationship marketing tool on consumer retention as well as the determinants of online consumer satisfaction affecting loyalty and retention. Although there are many factors affecting the implementation of 'E-CRM', that is companies' CRM initiatives on the Internet channel; this study focuses on examining consumer perceptions towards the constituents of building online consumer relationships. Adopting a positivist approach, this research asks the following major questions: 1) How are online consumer satisfaction, loyalty and retention constructed?, and 2) How does the use of Internet technology in CRM influence the satisfaction, loyalty and retention of consumers? Data for this research were collected through questionnaire survey on Internet users in major cities of Malaysia and were analyzed using statistical techniques namely, descriptive, Structural Equation Modeling and Multivariate Analysis of Variance. The results from this study reveal that the use of Internet in building consumer relationships affects consumer satisfaction, loyalty and retention. The effectiveness of E-CRM program determines the level of which online features, such as customer service efficiency, ease of navigation, information quality, personalization and online community would be implemented on firms' Web sites. In addition, older and welleducated users, more experienced as well as users who are involved in higher risk activities, such as online banking tend to be less tolerant. Hence, these groups of consumers seek superior quality of services from online service providers. This research contributes to knowledge in several ways. Most importantly, it demonstrates the roles of Internet technology pertinent in enhancing consumer values leading to long-term consumer relationships. In particular, this research highlights the critical dimensions of E-CRM program, which firms should invest in their consumer retention strategies. While repeat visits do not necessarily reflect consumer loyalty and commitment to a Web site, this research advocates that when salient elements of building consumer relationships exist, service providers are more likely to improve satisfaction and gain consumer loyalty. As indicated in the E-CRM model, firms' relationship marketing strategies should focus on identifying varying consumer expectations of service quality based on demographics, consumer level of experience with Internet technology and perceived risk.

Abstract:
Web application development is a complex and time consuming process that involves di erent stakeholders (ranging from customers to developers); these applications have some unique characteristics like navigational access to information, sophisticated interaction features, etc. However, there have been few proposals to represent those requirements that are speci c to Web applications. Consequently, validation of requirements (e.g. in acceptance tests) is usually informal, and as a result troublesome. To overcome these problems, this PhD Thesis proposes WebSpec, a domain speci c language for specifying the most relevant and characteristic requirements of Web applications: those involving interaction and navigation. We describe WebSpec diagrams, discussing their abstraction and expressive power. As part of this work, we have created a test driven model based approach called WebTDD that gives a good framework for the language. Using the language with this approach we have test several of its features such as automatic test generation, management of changes in requirements, and improving the understanding of the diagrams through application simulation. This PhD Thesis is composed of a set of published and submitted papers. In order to write this PhD Thesis as a collection of papers, several requirements must be taken into account as stated by the University of Alicante. With regard to the content of the PhD Thesis, it must speci cally include a summary which is devoted to the description of initial hypotheses, research objectives, and the collection of publications itself, thus justifying its coherence. It should be underlined that this summary of the PhD Thesis must also include research results and nal conclusions. Abstract:
The advances in ICTs have decisively changed the library and learning environment. On the one hand, ICTs have enhanced the variety and accessibility to library collections and services to break the barriers of location and time. On the other, the e-Learning has emerged as an additional medium for imparting education in many disciplines to overcome the constraint of physical capacity associated with the traditional classroom methods. For a vast developing country like India, this provides an immense opportunity to provide even higher education to remote places besides extending the library services through networking. Thanks to the recent initiatives by the public and private institutions in this direction, a few web-based instruction courses are now running in the country. This paper reviews different aspects of e-Learning and emerging learning landscapes. It further presents the library scene and new opportunities for its participation in the e-Learning process. How these ICTs driven advances can contribute to the comprehensive learning process in India is highlighted.

Full text
Abstract:
Video conferencing has been a part of many communication platforms over the years. Over the last decades users have moved from dedicated telephony networks to the Internet, and recently to the Web. With the introduction of Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) it is now possible to make voice- and video calls simply by visiting a web page, without having to install any additional software. Services that enable multi-user conferences are quite common. However existing solutions such as the Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) inherently do not scale and can be a single point of failure, due to its centralized architecture. This can lead to high maintenance costs and poor service availability. To solve the scalability- and availability problems of video-conferencing services, a decentralized alternative to the MCU is proposed. A decentralized conferencing system uses the distributed resources of its users instead of relying on a central server. This means that the system can handle an increasing number of users without having to upgrade any server infrastructure. Additionally, failures are only partial and can happen regularly without affecting the rest of the system. This report presents the development of a protocol built on top of WebRTC that enables completely decentralized multi-user conferencing. It includes a distributed algorithm for voice-activated switching to reduce the computation and network resources used. A load-balancing technique based on media stream relays is used to distribute the resource requirements of the conference participants. The protocol is implemented as a Javascript library that can be included in a web application. A proof-of-concept web application is developed using the library and its performance is evaluated. The performance data is analyzed and the results are used to make incremental improvements to the protocol and implementation. Although not all features of the protocol are implemented, the tests show promising results. The application allows multiple users to participate in high-definition video conferences, with no server infrastructure aside from a Mini PC that hosts a web server and a WebRTC signaling server.

Abstract: Although the Web service technology allows the development and execution of distributed applications, it still lacks facilities to deal with Quality of Service (QoS). Consumers may require services with particular non-functional characteristics and expect quality level guarantees. The goal of this thesis is to propose an extended Web service architecture supporting QoS management for Web services. It includes brokers to facilitate service selection according to functional and non-functional requirements and monitors to verify QoS attributes. The main contributions of this approach are: the use of the Web Services Policy Framework (WS-Policy) standard to complement Web Services Description Language (WSDL) specifications with QoS policies; an extension to the Universal Description Discovery & Integration (UDDI) standard for QoS-enriched Web service publication and discovery; and QoS updating to reflect actual service attributes

Ab, Hamid Noor Raihan. "An Assessment of the Internet's Potential in Enhancing Consumer Relationships." Thesis, [Melbourne : Victoria University], 2006. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/524/.

Abstract:
Location data is ubiquitous in many aspects of our lives. We are witnessing an increasing usage of this kind of data by a variety of applications. As a consequence, information systems are required to deal with large datasets containing raw data in order to build high level abstractions. Semantic Web technologies offers powerful representation tools for pervasive applications. The convergence of location-based services and Semantic Web standards allows an easier interlinking and annotation of trajectories. In this thesis, we focus in modeling mobile object trajectories in the context of the Semantic Web. First, we propose an ontology that allows the representation of generic episodes. Our model also handles contextual elements that may be related to trajectories. Second, we propose a framework containing three algorithms for automatic annotation of trajectories. The first one detects moves, stops, and noisy data; the second one is able to compress generic time series and create episodes that resumes the evolution of trajectory characteristics; the third one exploits the linked data cloud to annotate trajectories with geographic elements that intersects it with data from OpenStreetMap.As results of this thesis, we have a new ontology that can represent spatiotemporal phenomena at different levels of granularity. Moreover, our framework offers three novel algorithms for trajectory annotation. The move-stop-noise detection method is able to deal with irregularly sampled traces and do not depend on external data of the underlying geography; our time series compression method is able to find values that summarize a series at the same time that too small segments are avoided; and our spatial annotation algorithm explores linked data and the relationships among concepts to find relevant types of spatial features to describe the environment where the trajectory took place

Abstract: Abstract: Biodiversity research requires correlations of data on living beings and their habitats. Such correlations can be of different types, considering factors such as spatial relationships or environmental descriptions (e.g., description of habitat and ecossystems). Biodiversity information systems are complex pieces of software that allow researchers to perform these kinds of analysis. The complexity of these systems varies with the data used, the target users, and the environment where the systems are executed. One of the problems to be faced, especially on the Web, is the heterogeneity of the data aggravated by the diversity of user vocabularies. This research contributes to solve this problem by presenting a database model that organizes the biodiversity information using consensual data standards. The proposed model combines information collected in the ¯eld with that from museum data catalogues. The model was specified with the assistance of biologists and ecologists. The database was encapsulated in a Web service to ensure transparency in using, accessing and recovering the information. The service is invoked by client applications. The database and service were validated using real data, provided by the BIO-CORE project partners. BIO-CORE is a research project that involves computer and biology researchers from UNICAMP and USP

Abstract:

This thesis describes the development of a SOA-based architecture for integrating large EDI-using manufacturing companies purchasing processes with smaller non-EDI capable manufacturing companies, using online services.

The underlying need for this project lies with the fact that these small manufacturing companies risk to miss out on business, due to their inability to communicate via the industry standard EDI format. At the same time, getting EDI-capable involves significant investments in software licenses, connectivity services and consulting or training that these small companies may not be ready to make. The mentor company of this thesis project, System Andersson, produces resource planning software for this type of companies and would like to be able to provide them with an easy to use way of “jacking in” EDI support into their businesses, without having to make such significant investments. Ideally this feature would be developed as a standalone subscription based service that could be provided to users in such a way that their existing System Andersson software could connect to it and no further hard- or software would be needed on site. This EDI-enabling should be as easy as to be entirely transparent for the end-user companies. The task handed to the author was thus to develop an architecture for how such a subscription based service could be developed. Furthermore, in order to promote re-use and simplify development, the architecture was to be based on SOA concepts.

As a result of the project, such an architecture has been developed. The architecture details two services for translating and storing for later delivery a number of EDI message types of the EDIFACT variety. The architecture also specifies communications protocols (SOAP over HTTPS and AS2 over HTTPS) and APIs (web services) for how to communicate with these services. These specifications can be used to implement a system that performs the necessary integration, so that the smaller companies may indeed communicate via EDI.

The fitness of the developed architecture has been tested by implementing a prototype version of such a system based on it. It has also been validated by way of comparing to how well it adheres to SOA design principles. All in all, this design appears to be quite sound and presents a working solution to the studied problem.
