Today, humanity is once again looking into space and wants to establish extraterrestrial colonies. Astronauts will benefit from a single global network of interplanetary Internet. Automatic spacecraft and manned missions often use specially designed systems for communication. They work efficiently and fully perform the tasks assigned to them. However, to get the Internet into space, it is not enough to equip each spacecraft with a Wi-Fi router. Significant technical difficulties of outer space need to be overcome. The mutual movement of the planets sometimes blocks the passage of the signal. The distance between the spacecraft is such that it takes a long time to wait for an answer. And TCP / IP protocols do not work at interplanetary distances.

Abstract:
In addition to the problems that may occur in the Internet, the people who test mobile internet services confront additional challenges due to the wireless environment. If something goes wrong, it is very problematic for a tester to determine exactly where the error occurred and the reason why it occurred. Is it the software in the telephone that does not work properly, is the GPRS link stable, is the core network of the Internet working as it should, or is there something wrong at the server? The staff at Sony Ericsson has major difficulties determining where the origin of a problem is. They often simply know that something is not working. The major effort is often to detect the source of the actual problem rather than solving it. The PlayNow service provided by Sony Ericsson will be used as a reference service in this master’s thesis project. The PlayNow service is currently used for distributing ring signals. It is built on Internet standards, but depends on GSM’s specific features both for distribution and for e-commerce which makes it hard to test using existing web test tools. This Master’s Thesis examines the difficulties in establishing robust IP traffic links between a server and a mobile telephone. It examines the entire communication path between the mobile telephone and the server, and focus on how to detect (potential) errors. Within this project, development of a test tool is included. It supports features necessary for testing the reference service PlayNow. This report covers many different technologies within the mobile internet such as GSM, GPRS, and mobile IP. Moreover, the normal infrastructure of the Internet will also be considered; as well as how the different parts interact in an environment consisting of a mobile Internet with GPRS. A major part of the project has been evaluation of the communication link between a mobile device and a server. Additionally, some efforts have focused on developing the new test tool.

Abstract:
The aim of this Masters Thesis is to propose to SYSteam Nät AB, a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Uppsala, Sweden, how to implement IP telephony in their existing ITinfrastructure as a service to their customers. Thus the perspective of the thesis will be that of a local Internet Service Provider. Three general areas are covered in the thesis: Market and Business Model, Technology, and Economics. Important issues for SYSteam Nät AB as an established local broadband Internet Service Provider are to both retain present customers and to attract new customers. Some believe that offering value added services such as IP telephony could do this. Implementation of IP telephony can be done in different ways to fulfil SYSteam Nät’s requirements. The analysis leads to a proposal of how SYSteam Nät could implement IP telephony. This involves many multi-faceted business, technical, and financial issues; each aspect is examined in this thesis.

Abstract:

Ongoing work at National Aeronautics and Space Administration Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA/GSFC), seeks to apply standard Internet applications and protocols to meet the technology challenge of future satellite missions. Internet protocols and technologies are under study as a future means to provide seamless dynamic communication among heterogeneous instruments, spacecraft, ground stations, constellations of spacecraft, and science investigators. The primary objective is to design and demonstrate in the laboratory the automated end-to-end transport of files in a simulated dynamic space environment using off-the-shelf, low-cost, commodity-level standard applications and protocols. The demonstrated functions and capabilities will become increasingly significant in the years to come as both earth and space science missions fly more sensors and the present labor-intensive, mission-specific techniques for processing and routing data become prohibitively. This paper describes how an IP-based communication architecture can support all existing operations concepts and how it will enable some new and complex communication and science concepts. The authors identify specific end-to-end data flows from the instruments to the control centers and scientists, and then describe how each data flow can be supported using standard Internet protocols and applications. The scenarios include normal data downlink and command uplink as well as recovery scenarios for both onboard and ground failures. The scenarios are based on an Earth orbiting spacecraft with downlink data rates from 300 Kbps to 4 Mbps. Included examples are based on designs currently being investigated for potential use by the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission.

Raciti, Robert C. "Creating Competitive Advantage With Internet Technology." NSUWorks, 1998. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/784.

Full text
Abstract:
This study resulted in a paradigm which will enable Fortune 1000 companies to quantify the competitive advantage derived from their Web-based applications. With this model, Information Technology (IT) managers are better equipped to understand the strategic importance of the Web within their business. This author used an instrument called CAPITA (Competitive Advantage Provided by an Information Technology Application) to quantify the Web's effect on the competitive advantage of a company. The CAPITA is an instrument that measures the effect of an IT application on the numerous aspects of competitive advantage (Sethi & King, 1994; Sethi & King, 1991; Sethi, 1988). The CAPITA was used to determine the Web's strategic role in business by analyzing the data collected in this investigation and by comparing this author's research data with data from a previous study conducted by Sethi (1988). The instrument was issued to 1000 senior Information Technology (IT) executives in Fortune 1000 firms. 50 valid responses were received and analyzed. The data collected in this investigation were analyzed by comparing the Web applications that were developed specifically to create a competitive advantage to those applications that were developed for other purposes. The two group unpaired t test was used to quantify the difference between the two groups. This comparison empirically supports the statement that Web applications can be used to create aspects of competitive advantage. When comparing strategic Web applications to non-strategic Web applications, strategic Web applications were measured to have a greater alignment with organizations' business strategy (12 = .01, one-tailed), a lower cost of marketing the companies' final product (12 = .03, one-tailed), a lower cost of recruiting, hiring, training, development, and compensation of personnel (12 = .05 , one-tailed), a lower cost of interacting and coordinating activities with suppliers (12 = .04, one-tailed), and an improved ability of the primary users to order resources (12 = .02, one-tailed). A comparison of the data collected in this investigation with data collected from Sethi (1988) in a previous study does not support the statement that Web applications are as strategic as traditional strategic applications. The one group t test was the statistical test used to quantify the difference between the two groups. When compared to web-based applications, traditional strategic applications were determined to have a greater alignment with the organizations' business strategy (12 = .02, one-tailed), and greater top management support for the application (11 = .02, one-tailed). This supports the research literature that suggests that Fortune 1000 firms do not fully understand the strategic importance of Web-based applications (pant & Hsu, 1996; Cronin, 1996a). The data collected in this author's investigation also provide a benchmark that quantifies the competitive profile for Web applications within Fortune 1000 companies. This benchmark can be used to determine the competitive implications of Web applications within a company by administering the CAPITA instrumentation and comparing the results to the benchmark.

This paper presents work being done at NASA/GSFC by the Operating Missions as Nodes on the Internet (OMNI) project to demonstrate the application of Internet communication technologies to space communication. The goal is to provide global addressability and standard network protocols and applications for future space missions. It describes the communication architecture and operations concepts that will be deployed and tested on a Space Shuttle flight in July 2002. This is a NASA Hitchhiker mission called Communication and Navigation Demonstration On Shuttle (CANDOS). The mission will be using a small programmable transceiver mounted in the Shuttle bay that can communicate through NASA’s ground tracking stations as well as NASA’s space relay satellite system. The transceiver includes a processor running the Linux operating system and a standard synchronous serial interface that supports the High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) framing protocol. One of the main goals will be to test the operation of the Mobile IP protocol (RFC 2002) for automatic routing of data as the Shuttle passes from one contact to another. Other protocols to be utilized onboard CANDOS include secure login (SSH), UDP-based reliable file transfer (MDP), and blind commanding using UDP. The paper describes how each of these standard protocols available in the Linux operating system can be used to support communication with a space vehicle. It will discuss how each protocol is suited to support the range of special communication needs of space missions.

Abstract:
Communication between the parties in a project of an integrated collaborative engineering system has been the subject of active research for many years. The construction industry has a long tradition of collaborative working between the members of the construction team. At the design stage, this has traditionally been based on physical meetings between representatives of the principal design team members. To aid these meetings, the information and communication technologies that are currently available have been used. These Information Technology (IT) tools have produced some success but are held back by the problems posed by the use of diverse software tools and the lack of effective collaboration tools. The collaboration tools are necessary to reduce the time and distance constraints, in the increasingly global design teamwork. IT-supported collaborative construction design refers to actors in product design processing, working together on the same project with IT networks used for mediation to overcome time and geographical constraints. Fragmentation of the project management of a building construction between different specialists may be necessary, but good communication and coordination among the participants is essential to accomplish the overall goals of the project. New information technologies can be helpful in this process, especially the Internet and specialised extranets. A collaborative Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) design environment has been proposed by this research to integrate the work of distributed project participants. Based on identified functional requirements, the conventional building product models have been extended to incorporate high-level concepts such as activity and organisation, which are essential for coordination and collaboration. A generic human-project-human interaction model has been developed, which could not only make the building domain models interaction-aware, but also serve as a base model for developing general interaction utilities. A collaborative design environment prototype has been described, covering the common project workspace, general interaction utilities and multi-user interfaces. This study characterises collaboration as a function of time, space and shared working environment with enabled real-time design tools over the World Wide Web (WWW). To realise the proposal of this research the inter-mediated design communication, visual presentation, integration and organisation frameworks, groupware technology, and interactive multimedia tools are used. This study presents the CODE (COllaborative Design Environment) system. This Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) virtual working space is argued to support collaboration and teamwork in real time. The evaluation of the system showed its feasibility and reliability through a workshop. The results showed that the CODE system can assist the collaborative AEC design process.

The Internet is currently keeping managers awake at night. Surveys conducted in various industries and regions around the globe typically show that more than 90% of the executives consider that the Internet will transform or will have a major impact on the global market place. This work addresses this problem. It focuses on the issues of business transformation that result from the widespread adoption of the Internet, by manufacturers, distributors and consumers. In almost every industry, the Internet is bringing important business changes. The developments are bringing new competitors to the market place, bringing new forms of competition, and are reshaping industries. Two of the key issues to address are the identification of the major industry changes and the identification of the core capabilities required for implementing successful Internet ventures. Among established industries, financial services are already being strongly impacted. Financial services' products and financial services' value chain are predominantly built on information and its products underlay many of the other industries' activities. Bill payment and retail stock trading are leading the categories with higher share of online execution. The use of the Internet in the financial services industry is specifically analyzed in this work.

Abstract:

VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a method of providing a secure connection between a source (computer/server) and a destination host. The connection is secured not on the basis of employing a dedicated channel between the source and destination host, but instead the connection is secured over the public internet.

VPN is implemented in a hospital’s network to meet the Health Insurance Protection and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations. HIPAA is a directive that compels the medical centers and clinics to handle an individual’s electronic medical record securely; free from any nature of breaching.

In an effort to execute the VPN on a hospital’s network that complies with HIPAA, this project is focused on creating a network simulation with the VPN including other networking features. The VPN enabled network is accomplished using the GNS3 network simulation software. The data through the VPN tunnel are encoded and observed in Wireshark Software.

In the conclusion we will observe the state, unencrypted and encrypted, of the packets before and after, respectively, applying the VPN to the border routers through which the IP packets are traveling via the insecure Public Internet.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Information Systems))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2005
Where customers have freedom of choice, their level of satisfaction will determine if they are loyal, long-term and profitable customers. If customers are not satisfied they will take their business elsewhere. The increase in the level of satisfaction in key element areas would increase overall customer satisfaction and increase customers' future behaviours such as purchasing on the Internet and recommending the e-retail websites to others. This thesis also explains in the previous chapters that early adopters of eretailing exhibited more of the elements of service transactions than goods transactions and that these elements best explain the e-retailer-consumer relationship. Creating the trust between a customer and its service provider {e-retailer} is one of the key factors in ensuring customer loyalty and retention. Other challenges that were discussed include controlling customer data, integrating on-offline orders, delivering goods cost effectively and handling of returns. Strategies e-retail businesses implement and use in improving product and service quality, gain market share and maintain greater customer loyalty were discussed in this research. If the e-retail businesses can continue to improve consumers' satisfaction they will be rewarded with continued improvement in overall customer satisfaction, customer loyalty and retention and increase profitability. While the Internet certainly poses new challenges for e-retailers, and offers them invaluable new tools, a spate of new research suggests that there is no reason for traditional retailers to consider themselves doomed. The big question is: how does Internet technology assist e-retail businesses to create loyal e-customers?

Data management is vital to the running of any organisation, small and large alike. It has been proven time and again, that organisations with poor data management/administration will not survive in this competitive world. [Bro99] states that although technology is a key enabler of change, its main role is to be the servant, not the master. Therefore, there is a need for the research world to reconsider the role of data in computing. Enabling technologies should be used to utilise the most effective and efficient access to the data.

Abstract:

With the Internet expansion, real-time transmission over Internet is becoming a new promising application. Successful real-time communication over IP networks requires reasonably reliable, low delay, low loss date transport. Since Internet is a non-synchronous packet switching network, high load and lack of guarantees on data delivery make real-time communication such as Voice and Video over IP a challenging application to become realistic on the Internet.

This thesis work is composed of two parts within real-time voice and video communication: network simulation and measurement on the real Internet. In the network simulation, I investigate the requirement for the network"overprovisioning"in order to reach certain quality-of-service. In the experiments on the real Internet, I simulate real-time transmission with UDP packets along two different traffic routes and analyze the quality-of- service I get in each case.

The overall contribution of this work is: To create scenarios to understand the concept of overprovisioning and how it affects the quality-of-service. To develop a mechanism to measure the quality-of-service for real-time traffic provided by the current best-effort network.

Abstract:
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Magister Technologiae: Quality In the Faculty of Engineering At the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) 2013
Advances in internet technologies have created opportunities for facilitating learning and improving performance in education. The applications of these technologies have given rise to the phenomenon widely referred to as e-Learning. E-Learning has been widely adopted by tertiary institutions globally as a strategic initiative to improve the knowledge delivery process. This study was carried out at a University of Technology (UoT) in the Western Cape, South Africa, where e-Learning technology is used mainly for distribution of course materials. The study focuses on the impact of a web-based e-Learning program on the quality of teaching and learning; with an overall aim of creating awareness of the extent to which the quality of teaching and learning can be improved through a learning environment that engages an e-Learning program for leverage. The need to maximize the return on investments (ROI) by the institution on an enterprise e-Learning platform (Blackboard), the learning enablement which educational technologies afford, and the dividends promised by a strategic implementation of e–Learning in enhancing and enriching learning environments makes this study relevant and timely. The research was conducted using the UoT as a case study, and utilised the principles of both qualitative and qualitative research paradigms. The research was based on a review of relevant literature, administration of survey questionnaires to specific faculty and students’ populations, and statistical comparisons of students’ test results based on instruction delivery methods. The findings of this study underline that students’ satisfaction with a teaching method can positively influence how they learn and the outcomes they achieve, that instruction methods can greatly affect students’ performance, and consequently the quality of learning. The result of this study conforms to the view of many authors that instruction methods can be improved by systematic use of specific internet technologies (or simply, e-Learning tools) in the teaching and learning process. It was found that student achieved better results in modules of a subject that were taught using a combination of e-Learning program and face-to-face learning method than in the module taught using the traditional method only. Other emerging findings from this study suggest that lecturers at the institution are biased against the term e-Learning mainly because of their negative experiences with the e-Learning platform, lack of knowledge of the potentials of an e-Learning program and the challenges it poses. However, some faculty members show some willingness to use this e-Learning approach if conditions for its success are favourable with the necessary support systems in place. The main conclusion drawn from this research as a consequence of the findings is that powerful learning environments that meet the needs and enhance the learning of students would be in place at the institution if academic staff are duly aware of the benefits of an e-Learning program to them and their students; and if they are well resourced and capacitated. This study therefore argues for a multipronged approach to facilitate the institution-wide use of e-Learning program in teaching and learning. This includes but is not limited to educating the academic staff on the advantages/benefits of using technology as an effective tool for learner engagement, providing meaningful pedagogical training with the specific aim of preparing them for integrating e-Learning into their teaching, identifying learning objectives and learning processes that can best be supported by either e-Learning components or face-to-face, or by both and adequate support structure.

Abstract:
Magnet Recognition, a nurse-driven certification, is an acknowledgement of nursing excellence within a hospital. Magnetic Recognition supports the highest quality of patient outcomes and is the standard for nursing care and professionalism in nursing practice. The site for this project has engaged in the process of seeking Magnet Recognition but lacked a method of communicating their progress to staff, prompting the need for the institutional intranet Magnet webpage. Guided by Roger's diffusion of innovation theory and Lewin's change management model, the purpose of this quality improvement project was to develop an evaluation plan for this webpage on the institutional intranet. Specific stakeholders within the institution were targeted to answer open-ended questions about the Magnet webpage. Their feedback was summarized and used to guide the development of the evaluation plan. Feedback revealed a need to change areas of the webpage related to navigating back to the homepage, reporting outcome data for the shared-decision councils' projects, and improving the resolution of the professional practice model. A toolkit was then developed, consisting of a checklist and a questionnaire using questions about the design and content of the Magnet webpage, which could be implemented immediately and then completed annually for continuous quality improvement. The results of this project are consistent with the literature, illustrating the importance of developing a plan for evaluating the implementation process. This project was socially significant because an effective evaluation plan could be used by other institutions seeking Magnet Recognition who develop a webpage as a strategy to engage staff and communicate their Magnet Recognition journey.

Abstract:
This project report treats the basics of the rising phenomenon of Internet of Things, and the devices that can be connected to it. One of the primary goals of the project was to gain greater knowledge in the field of Internet of Things and how it can be approached form an Electrical Engineer point of view.Three types of home devices were chosen to be implemented into the Internet of Things devices. Firstly, a coffeemaker was built so it can be activated from a mobile phone. This was made possible by using cheap electronics in the form of a control board, 433 MHz receiver and a relay. In the second part of the project the window blinders was made controllable from the same application as the coffee machine. This was made possible by using similar devices and small DC servos and stepper motors. The third part of the project was to make a automated irrigation system for a flowerpot. This could be made by measuring the moisture in the soil and thereby pump water from a reservoir in to the soil. Finally a main control device was constructed to handle all the signals from the users smart phone and communicate these signals and commands to the various systems built.

Abstract:
This work presents the design and implementation of a firmware prototype that allows multiple Internet Of Things (IoT) protocols to coexist such that they share a single radio. 6LoWPAN over Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) are the two network protocols that are explored in this work. 6LoWPAN over TSCH forms a mesh network of low power embedded devices so that they are globally accessible through their IPv6 addresses. BLE is suitable for the direct connectivity between devices in short radio ranges. Sharing a single radio between diverse protocols is challenging since protocols access the radio in different modes and with different time patterns. The proposed architecture uses radio abstraction layer for dynamically sharing the radio based on the priority of the requests. Furthermore, concurrent operation of protocols is achieved with the help of priority based multitasking of Micrium operating system. Finally, the time critical operations of the TSCH and the radio abstraction module are handled with nested interrupts. The implementation of the firmware is evaluated with mainly two types of experiments. Overall, it is observed from the experiments that both protocols can coexist concurrently and can maintain their connections. In one set of experiments, periodic data is sent over both protocols every 5 seconds (with small random jitter). Basically these experiments involve small data traffic on both protocols. It is observed that the protocol with lower radio priority degrades in performance. Approximately 10% of the packets need re-transmissions, and thus have more latency for the protocol with lower radio priority. The second set of experiments involve file transfers over 3 hops using 6LoWPAN, while one of the middle nodes (acting as a router for the file transfer) also carries BLE session comprising of 17 BLE activities. It is observed that the mean file transfer time with BLE session is delayed compared to the no BLE case. The delay is less than the duration of the two active TSCH slots. This architecture is suitable for sharing a single radio where the network traffic is sparse. This architecture allows small embedded devices with a single radio to be accessible across many protocols without any modifications to the protocol standards. Although the performance degrades in the simultaneous operations, the protocols still keep their respective connections and complete their operations.

Abstract:
Television is moving towards Internet-based services with an increasing popularity of online streaming and connected TV sets. However, the lean-back viewing experience is often forgotten in the design of such services – traditional broadcasted television is still the source for relaxed entertainment in the living room. In this study, a concept of a new TV service is proposed. The aim is to create a solution where the qualities in traditional television are preserved in an online environment. The decisions that were taken when shaping this concept are based on a literature study, a market analysis, a design workshop and expert interviews. The main results are that the interfaces of today’s Internet-based TV services require too much interaction and decision-making, and that TV channels should be redefined and take more advantage from the independence of a fixed broadcasted source.

This paper analyzes the changes in the Internet portal business strategy for telecom and other Internet access service providers (ISPs) because broadband Internet access is becoming the standard due to the rapid technology development and growth of Internet access needs and services. I provide some viable strategies for telecom companies that compete with successful Internet portals such as Yahoo. Based on my survey results, I propose the following three workable strategies. The first is outsourcing excellent modules to web sites at both large corporations and individual sites. The second strategy is providing specialized information management services for individual activities in order to retain loyal users, and the third strategy is making this service available for brand building by providing solid security/privacy policies at portals available only at telecom companies. Also, I identified the following four issues that telecom companies need to address to implement the above strategies. First, to introduce modularized services to large-scale competitors, I encourage protocol interoperability on both sides until substantial results and benefits have been realized. Next, telecom companies need to prepare to provide services that first-tier portals are unable to introduce, e.g., schemes that do not require visitors to be led to telecom companies sites. Third, to establish a solid reputation and public trust in the security/privacy services, telecom companies need to prepare a long-term strategic business plan to reach the goal. Last, viable business model is not only advertisement but also marketplace model. Selling security function as an option is also effective.

Abstract:
East Asian international students often face challenges identifying and participating as active and equal members in western academic communities (Morita, 2004). Even though international students often depend on the internet during this critical time (Yang, et al., 2004), how their internet uses impact their identity is largely unknown. Using semi-structured interviews, this phenomenological study explores the experiences of seven South Korean graduate students in Canada, their internet uses, and how these uses influence their identity construction. Findings reveal that these students often experience identity challenges and report that using the internet for socializing, entertainment and information alleviates these issues. Depending on the degree of awareness and purposes of their online practices, these students' internet uses both enable and constrain their identities. Understanding these processes is useful for university student services and students themselves in considering ways the internet can be used to facilitate overcoming challenges international students face during educational sojourn.

Abstract:
The purpose of this exploratory dissertation was to gather data regarding information technology and the internet as it related to clinical counselors. The findings have the potential to add to the sparse information base regarding use of technology and the internet in clinical counseling practice. The data for this dissertation was collected by surveying a national sample of 534 clinical counselors who were recruited from state clinical counseling organizations. The survey instrument was done on-line and disseminated via the internet. Of those recruited, 215 counselors were used in the final data analysis. The survey instrument was designed to assess a) the extent to which counselors are knowledgeable of computer technologies, b) the extent to which their clients make use of the internet, and c) the extent to which they believe computer technology contributes to their professional practice. The study found that clinical counselors in this sample rate themselves highly in terms of internet competence and their knowledge of information technologies. However, despite these high rates of knowledge, counselors are not implementing the internet in their counseling practices at very high rates. This research suggests that clients are increasingly becoming more internet savvy and are using the internet in their own mental health research. As such, counselors need to begin to implement internet components into their practice when appropriate.

Samakovitis, Georgios. "Technology investment decision making : an integrated analysis in UK Internet banking." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25148.

Full text
Abstract:
The research addresses the problem of technological investment decision making (TIDM) in UK Banks. It focuses on Internet banking technologies and uses interviews with bank executives and industry practitioners to form a coherent understanding of how technological decisions are practically made and what, in that process, is the role of evaluation techniques. Aims are (1) to identify and explain the discord between formal and practical evaluations of technologies, (2) to review the role of expert professional groups in defining the norms of evaluation, and (3) to develop a model to reflect the reality of TIDM in UK banking. The ultimate aim is to contribute to reducing the ambiguity that notoriously characterises the evaluation of new technology. According to the theoretical framework the TIDM problem is socially constructed by expert groups (actors) who either participate in decision-making or assume roles in developing methodologies for facilitating it. Its ultimate shape is the outcome of negotiations between these viewpoints, in light of expert power positions and political advocacy. Three classes of such “actors” are identified: (1) Practitioners, namely experts in Financial Institutions, (2) Observers, academic researchers, consultants and government bodies, and (3) the Community of Received Wisdom, comprising the commonly understood views on what TIDM is and how it should be made. A novel methodological approach, Informed Grounded Theory (IGT), proposes that viewpoints are by default informed by individuals’ academic and professional training; thus, past theory should not be considered as a contaminating factor for the data and their interpretation, but as integral part of it. Key findings concern (1) the unconventional usage of financial and other formal methodologies in TIDM practice, (2) the highly political role of dominant expert groups and the resulting dynamics of their development, (3) the influence of the wider economic cycles on how technological value is perceived and (4) the changing role of the Finance function in technological investment justification. The core conclusion is that TIDM in UK banks is an act of justification and advocacy, far more than it is an assessment process; valuation techniques play an ancillary role in ascertaining views often founded on purely strategic or political grounds.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, Technology and Policy Program, 2006.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 144-145).
"What Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is going to do is start to weaken the foundation of the way we've done things for 100 years...Congress already should be discussing the next telecom bill," said Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Michael Powell in February 2004, before the United States Senate. The objective of this thesis is to study how VoIP challenges the incumbent US telecommunications act. The appearance of VoIP comes at a juncture when telecommunications system has already turned into a large-scale, complex system with multiple, competing infrastructures. VoIP, however, greatly augments the nested complexity by affording a technology that enables multiple architectures and business models for delivering the same voice (and often converged voice and data) service, while remaining agnostic to the underlying infrastructure. The VoIP-enabled architectures have very different capabilities and costs from one another. Many do not - or cannot - support social regulations such as emergency 911, wiretapping and disability access. Most exploit the economic arbitrage opportunities by evading access charges and universal service contributions.
(cont.) Added to this is the combination of reduced asset specificity due to VoIP's layered architecture and a global standard based ubiquitous IP technology that frees the service providers of the need to own the delivery infrastructure, and enables them to offer service from anywhere globally. Such a misalignment - between regulatory obligations and technical capabilities - has the potential to incubate large-scale systemic failures due to lack of coordination between the local optimization focused private markets and the highly compartmentalized public institutions. The case of Communications Assistance for the Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) - also known as the wiretapping act - is taken to study its implications on VoIP. A system dynamics model is used for the analysis. Four policy lessons emerge through the process of arriving at the model and the subsequent sensitivity analysis. First, considering peer-to-peer (P2P) VoIP a non-issue for CALEA is exactly what might make it an issue. Second, if P2P VoIP aspires to be a telephony substitute, it will invite the threat of social regulation. Third, arms race between CALEA-compliant and non-compliant technologies may raise the cost of CALEA compliance. Fourth, prohibiting use of certain encryption techniques may help the LEA to keep their ability to wiretap intact, but it also deprives customers of the privacy the prohibited schemes would have offered, and thereby helps the Internet-crime.

IET Editorial: In the future communications will be pervasive in nature, allowing users access at the “touch of button” to attain any service, at any time, on any device. The future device design process requires both a reconfigurable RF front end and back end with high tuning speed, energy efficiency, excellent linearity and intelligence to maximise the “greenness” of the network. But energy efficiency and excellent linearity are the main topics that are driving the designs of future transceivers, including their efforts to minimise network contributions to climate changes such as the effect of CO2 emissions: the minimisation of these is a requirement for information and communication technology (ICT) as much as for other technologies. Recently, information and communication technologies were shown to account for 3% of global power consumption and 2% of global CO2 emissions, and hence far from insignificant. The approach towards energy conservation and CO2 reduction in future communications will require a gret deal of effort which should be targeted both at the design of energy efficient, low-complexity physical, MAC and network layers, while maintaining the required Quality of Service (QoS). There is also a need, in infrastructures, networks and user terminals, to take a more holistic approach to improving or achieving green communications, from radio operation, through functionality, up to implementation. The increasing demand for data and voice services is not the only cause for concern since energy management and conservation are now at the forefront of the political agenda. The vision of Europe 2020 is to become a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy, and as part of these priorities the EU have set forth the 20:20:20 targets, whereby greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption should be reduced by 20% while energy from renewables should be increased by 20%.

Internet application has been changing day after day from searching and transmitting simple data to multimedia applications. It has become a home appliance rather than a professional tool only. It serves us as telephone, television, radio, etc, and Internet Phone is very popular at the moment. The Internet Phone, PC to PC communication, discussing in this paper is based on VoIP, including critical technologies such as network programming, voice processing, speech codec, and real time transmission. All these techniques are practiced perfectly in Speak Freely. Speak Freely, an Internet Phone software, enable you to have a free talk on Internet, was originally written by John Walker in 1991. In 1997, John Walker agreed Brian C. Wiles officially taking over the project. With the spirit of Open Source SoftwareTM, he licensed this program under the GNU General Public License. The specific of Speak Freely is including client-server operateion, it provides voice buffer process, several speech codec algorithms to adapt different bandwidth environments, and three optional protocols. This thesis is to probe the critical technologies of Internet Phone by discussing the example of Speak Freely. Modifying some subroutines for observing how it works, knowing the specific of algorithms, and analyzing its reason would be seen in the following pages.

With the advances of technology, there are many new products and services which may infringe on some rights of traditional businesses. Among these conflicts, one of the most drastic is between copy machine producers and copyright owners. In America, there are many cases in which many justices would like to make some rules to solve these conflicts. Among these rules, the most famous one is Sony doctrine suggested in the Sony case, which means that secondary liability cannot rest on the mere manufacture, sale, or distribution of a technology that is capable of substantial or commercially significant noninfringing uses. In another side, in Germany, the same conflicts are handled by neutral business activity doctrine. The main goal of this thesis is to find a fitting and proper rule to ascertain the rights and the responsibilities between copy machine producers and copyright owners. In order to achieve this goal, I focus on P2P internet technology and discuss the relational American cases and German doctrines. After converting those rules and doctrines to fit my country’s law, I also suggest a rule, diagnosing three events rule, to solve this problem in my country. Finally, I discuss the result produced by using my rule to see if the result is a best one to copy machine producers, copyright owners and our society. Besides, I have also researched recent amendment of Copyright Law and the recent related litigation in my country.

In recent years, the internet advertisement is an important application in the area of E-commerce. However, the Click Through Rate (CTR) of the traditional internet advertisement is very low. In addition, the traditional internet advertisement just offers one-way advertisement. That is, it only selects the advertisement at random. In this way, there is not any relationship between the user and the operating environment of advertisement. So the user perhaps will not be interested (even may be repugnant) in the advertisement that he (or she) has received. This paper proposes a User Information Internet Advertisement (UIIA) model, which is a new and promising advertisement technology. According to the visitor''s relevant information (e.g., visitor''s need, taste, use habit, and so on), UIIA begins to classify and filter the advertisement content, and then offers the correct advertisement to the visitor. The UIIA technology enables the advertisement content to match with visitor''s taste and demand. Obviously, it can significantly improve CTR. The paper also provides solution methods for the issues such as right of privacy and efficiency.

There are many ISPs who adopt ATM switches to establish their backbone networks. To integrate both the Internet and the ATM techniques becomes more and more important. Traditional integration methods, like IP over ATM, seem to have some disadvantages. The encapsulation overhead seems significant, and the processing overhead at the ingress/egress ATM node seems too heavy. In this thesis, we propose a technique, called ATM over IP, to integrate both networks. The encapsulation overhead is reduced. The processing overhead is distributed to every node without modifying the application software. The corresponding protocol software is slightly modified.

Abstract:
The banking industry in Oman is of major importance to Oman's economy, yet the banks continue to conduct their banking transactions using traditional methods. A strong banking industry supports economic developments significantly through its efficient financial services. The role of the banking industry in trying to achieve the objectives outlined by the Sultan of Oman will depend heavily on the industry's capabilities. This requires banks to introduce changes (both at the procedural level and at the informational level) such as the banking industry moving from traditional distribution channel banking to electronic distribution channel banking. Given the prevalence of Internet technology adoption by the banking industry in developed countries, the reason for the lack of such an innovation in developing countries such as Oman is a fruitful research question. The aim of this thesis is to explore managers' perceptions of Internet technology and their tendency to adopt it in the banking industry.

The purpose of this paper is to assess the key factors affecting the Internet User's Acceptance of Virtual Reality Technology on the Internet. Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this study verified the model and tested the proposed hypotheses with the empirical data obtained through a questionnaire survey. Structural equation modeling (SEM) with AMOS 6.0 was used to evaluate the relationship among the constructs in the model. The results indicate that there are three factors: performance expectancy, perceived playfulness, and facilitating conditions, exerting influence on the acceptance of Virtual Reality Technology and that the influences on behavioral intentions vary with respondents’ demographics, suggesting that E-Commerce website developers should incorporate more Virtual Reality Technology to create the value for the users in order to attract the potential customers.

This study presents application of Information Retrieval (IR) technology for internet-based learning (IBL) evaluation. The objective is to support IBL, which is getting important due to the ubiquity of the internet. The learning evaluation of students are based on a “instruction assisting knowledge set” which consists of key words of learning materials. Acorrding to “learning assisting knowledge set”, we use IR technology, such as similarity evaluation and query expansion, to analyze students’ performance, especially for their learning universality. A two-week case study is conducted on junior and senior students in the department of Civil Engineering. The results show that the evaluation obtained from the system in good agreement with that of the instructor. The study that verifies the applicability of using IR technology to analyze students’ behaviors. As a result, instructors could use the analysis to find out students’ learning problem and provide appropriate guidance.
