Abstract:
Information and communication technologies have become an integral factor in the daily lives of people over the last decade. Although their usage allows significant advantages, there are still a lot of people in the world who do not use such technologies. In industrialized countries, the reason for this is not in economic factors, but age seems to be a significant determinant of the digital divide. Recently, however, the number of older adults taking advantages of the Internet has been growing. Numerous authors state that a key aspect of successful aging is to remain actively involved in life in old age. In this regard, it is pointed out that online communication and new media present many new opportunities and challenges for the social inclusion of older people. The aim of this paper is to examine the attitudes and opinions of older people towards the use of the Internet and the reasons for its use. The research was conducted using the 2019 survey method on a sample of 240 people over the age of 65 residing in the Šibenik-Knin County in the Republic of Croatia. The results of the survey show that, although more than half of the respondents have an Internet connection, only a fifth own a computer or a laptop. One third of the respondents uses the Internet every day, and most of them did not attend a course to help them use it. They point out that they easily mastered the rules of the network, in which their family members gave them a support and help. Respondents most often search the Internet for the purpose of informing, especially about daily events, then for the entertainment, cultural education and communication with others. More than half of them have a profile on social networks, mostly on Facebook. Despite all this, they do not emphasize the great impact of the Internet on their lives, and believe that the Internet often takes up a lot of free time. Also, more than half of the surveyed population does not use the Internet because they are not interested in it, do not have the financial means to buy a computer. The reason is that they are suspicion of endangering their own security and privacy. However, those not using the Internet state that their accessing to information is not limited because of that. They also point out that the only motivation for starting using the Internet would be the necessity of communicating with their families.

This paper argues that the World Wide Web provides a unique opportunity for sociological explication. It contends that sociological uses of the Internet for publication purposes have not as yet taken full advantage of the technology available, producing web facsimiles of printed pages. It highlights the potential for undertaking inquiries which employ the multimedia aspects of WWW technology and extends some of the insights from ethnomethodology and conversation analysis regarding retrievable data.

Abstract:
The article is based on the author’s speech at the 14th International Sociological Readings of memory of N. V. Panina in Kyiv on December 10, 2020 and is an extended version of this speech. Paper presents reflections on the specifics of the relationship between globalization and the pandemic, and the possible configurations of this relationship in different types of societies. The author suggests that the interaction between globalization and COVID-19 is a separate case of glocalization in current conditions and identifies the coronavirus features that pose a direct threat to humanity. It is emphasized that there are no unambiguous forecasts for future developments. There are several scenarios for the possible development of a pandemic of this virus, the probability of realization of which largely depends on such a feature as the wave-like development of the exponent. These features and characteristics of coronavirus infection outline several new challenges for sociological science, among which the main is to understand the sharp narrowing of the traditional subject of its research – social relations and human interactions in objective reality, transferring their growing part to the Internet and explosive growth of virtual reality. This radically intensifies sociologists’ scientific research in the virtualization field and the multiplicity and hybridity of its forms and the cycle of realities in general. In the pandemic conditions, such spheres and directions of research appear as tertiary socialization on the Internet, forming virtual identities, forming a network person, etc. The priority trends of modern societies development in coronavirus pandemic conditions, such as radical renewal of economy and other spheres based on revolutionary technologies and introduction of artificial intelligence, are considered individually. It is emphasized that the coronavirus’s global spread has led to a reassessment of values, forcing people to reconsider existing constructs (e.g. D. Rodrick’s trilemma), in search of compromises. The article concludes with an appeal to Ukrainian sociologists to multiply efforts to understand new realities, considering new global, regional and local trends.

Abstract:
The study argues for the need to analyze the activities of religious confessions in the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet, which is a fundamentally new communication mechanism. Having studied that new type of communication of a religious organization and its followers through a detailed description of the structure of the sites, one can give a general description of the resources, which together can become the basis for further religious studies and sociological studies of the quality of the assimilation of the virtual space by religious confessions. The statistical method of information analysis is used as the leading method. The authors analyze the content of the official websites of various religious denominations in the sphere of the Russian-speaking Internet; provide a general description of the rating lists leaders for the sites with religious topics from which it can be concluded that they all have the necessary cultural and legal authority, which legitimizes their use and access to them in the minds of network users. In addition, it is argued that sites have the necessary information content, contain relevant information, and they are able to satisfy the interests of users with minimal effort. With all that in mind, it may be said that the study can supplement the area of knowledge devoted to the study of the involvement of religious organizations in the modern life of the information age.

Abstract:
The paper presents an overview of the main tendencies in modern discourse studies in German-speaking circles, further referring to the problem of communicative self-presentation strategies used by the participants in virtual conflict discourse and their usage in certain conflict situations. The linguistic, sociological and psychological aspects of conflict communication play an important role in the research of discourse in German-language discourse studies. The research groups such as the Vienna circle and the Duisburg school of discourse analysis integrated theories on conflict discourse, inter alia the hegemony theory developed by E. Laclau and Ch. Mouffe or the theory of conflict discourse of J. Habermas into their research, focusing mainly on the problem of racism and right extremist discourse in the German-speaking public sphere. The modern research includes also sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic aspects of racist discourse research. Scientific works published in the last ten years focus mainly on problems of hidden racism within public and social institutions and racist discourse within teenager groups. The study of different sociological and psychological factors of communicative behavior are aimed at reconstructing social crises and forecast of future tendencies in order to avoid further cases of discrimination in society. With the growing importance of media as source of knowledge and instrument of influence, virtual communication becomes an integral part of discourse formation and articulation. On the one hand, such special features of the Internet, as spontaneity of communication, anonymity of the users, as well as the unlimited number of potential participants, provide a free choice of instruments of self-presentation. On the other hand, however, they involve certain limitations of the communication process itself: such features as social status, social or physical power can no longer be source of influence on the opponent. Thus, participants of conflict discourse have to defend their own and their social group's positive image by choosing suitable communicative strategies of self-presentation and presentation of the opponent. Positive self-presentation in conflict discourse includes a strong division of communicative space into oppositional categories, such as ME (US)-YOU (THEY), GOOD-BAD or RIGHT-WRONG, where the ME (US) group is credited with positive qualities such as good, intelligent, experienced, rightful etc, whereas such negative qualities, as bad, stupid, inexperienced, wrong are attributed to the opponent group. The analysis of such self-presentation strategies and categorization processes allows making conclusions about the mental aspects of discourse practices in separate social and ethnocultural groups basing on psycholinguistic features of intercultural and interpersonal conflict discourse.

Abstract:
In the context of the increasing influence of the products of the Internet field (social media, blogging) on social everyday life, media education is becoming especially relevant. The symbolic status of the audience is changing, which becomes not only a consumer, but also a producer of media content. The current stage in the development of media communications can be considered unique with some reservations. However, in the history of the XIX-XX centuries, there was a precedent, since in society periodically there were periods of a large-scale surge of interest in media literacy as the main category of media education, depending on a number of socio-cultural factors. This increase in the importance of media literacy is wave-like. The subject of this article is the waves of media education, which are considered from the standpoint of synchronicity and diachrony. A complex of methods is used: historical and cultural analysis; structural analysis; contextual analysis; secondary analysis of sociological and statistical data. Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that the modern media communication conditions in which the new media develop are similar to those that were in the formation of the audience of cinema and television. The Internet and, in particular, social media are no less rapidly conquering the audience. At the same time, the modern mediated world requires a high level of media competence and the development of critical thinking from society.

The article deals with the clinical and psychological aspects of including minors in terrorist and extremist activities. In the historical perspective, it was traced how the views on the role of mental disorders in the genesis of such crimes changed. It is shown that terrorist and extremist activity must be viewed as a complex multi-factor phenomenon, in which socio-psychological components play a leading role. It is noted that the psychopathological process can act as a prerequisite for inclusion in such radical groups. Psychoanalytic, sociological, cognitive approaches, theories of social learning and the concept of diffuse ego-identity making attempts to explain the mechanisms of terrorist and extremist activity in minors are analyzed. The problem of insufficient study of the influence of the Internet and social networks on the formation of readiness for admission to adolescents in radical organizations is posed.

Abstract:
The mediatization of social reality, which confidently declared itself in the early 2000s, is clearly presented as a new digital dimension of religion. Religions of the historical heritage of Russia actively master modern media and digital space of the Internet, create their own media environment of religious network interactions and events, discourses concerning society. The mediatizationof religions has the effect of changing the communicative profile of religions, promoting their topics in a broad public discussion on a par with the political and economic agenda. Modern sociological analysis of religion as an integral part of society now involves the search for answers to the question about the correlation of offline measurements of religious interactions, organizations and communications with their online presentations. One of the actual directions of sociological research of the digital space of religious interaction and discourses was the concept of mediatization of religion, developed by the joint efforts of scientists of the international team "Scandinavian research network". In line with this concept, the author refers to the study of the communicative aspect of the confession of the Orthodox faithful in its offline-online dimensions. As a basic and minimal unit of religious participation, confession as an interaction presents aspects of affiliation, religious-worldview and activity involvement. Central to the consideration in this article is the problem of studying the formats of confession representation in a variety of communicative themes of the digital environment of Orthodox parishes. The study in its full volume was carried out in several stages in 2017– 2018 years. For two years the author has been conducting an offline structured observation of confession in the Orthodox churches of Ekaterinburg, processing and analysis of the results; consequently we carried out operationalization of observation units in relation to online communication confession, collected, processed and analyzedthe data. In 2018, the author undertook a study of media communication network vk.com communities of Ekaterinburg parishes, applying structured observation and qualitative content analysis. Using a continuous, multistage, quota sampling, the author has explored digital landscapes, and key communication subjects digital communication 22 vk.com communities of the parishes of Ekaterinburg. The article addresses the issues of youth employment and factors affecting the success of employment. Based on official statistics, unemployment rates are compared by age groups in the federal districts ofRussia. The analysis of the situation inMoscowand in the regions of theFar Eastrevealed the most vulnerable in terms of employment group of the population – from 15 to 29 years. According to the results of their own sociological research carried out in the metropolitan metropolis, there are presented: channels for finding vacancies, reasons that impede the employment of young people, difficulties in communicating directly with employers, and willingness to retrain. The greatest problems in the employment of young people (including graduates of universities and colleges) are the lack of necessary experience and an appropriate level of education. It is revealed that the most effective ways of finding jobs for young people are special sites on the Internet and contacting the city employment service. The structure of young unemployed by level of education in the Russian macro-regions is considered. Comparison of the situation in the regions of the Far East and inMoscowshowed the presence of similar problems, including an oversupply of trained specialists in the professions lawyer, economist, manager. The imbalance between the needs of the labor market and the supply of young labor requires decision-making at the federal and regional levels.

This work aims at proposing a reflexion on the private sphere at present days, having in mind that, in post-modern times, the principle of privacy constituted as such and built especially in the 19th century, is not held. The analysis will take into account the practices observed on the Internet, which appear to indicate that, at present times, the private space perceives another format. Starting from the assumptions of the Comprehensive Sociology, we intend to verify past and present social manifestations and the way the public/private dichotomy has been perceived up to now. We also analyze how the individuals make use of the new communication technologies and how they provide a high exposition of privacy, favoring the modification of the private sphere. Completing the discussion about the theme, we propose to observe some criminal occurrences on the net which harm the guarded right to private space, according to what is foreseen in the Brazilian legislation. This way, we analyze how the classic cases of privacy invasion, in an environment that does not have specific regulations like the internet, are being solved. At last, this paper aims at pointing to a necessary discussion that starts by the following question: in post-modern times, considering means like the internet, is the private sphere held or it is condemned to a reduction, demonstrating a renewed valuation of the public space?

Abstract:
This master's thesis analyses digital space from a postcolonial perspective. It starts with defining the postcolonial perspective itself - its interests, historical context, sources and the methods it uses. Then it examines the concept of colonialism, colonial thought construction, ideas and accompanying phenomena and their application in the coloniser/colonised relation in the colonial systems. The next part presents digital space as the space of social structures, cathegorises its habitants and describes their characteristics. The author then explores, compares and analyses processes that are natural to colonialism in digital space, specifically in relation between the digital north and south, at the level of the digital identity and in the process of labour in digital space.

Abstract: This work is mainly aimed to contribute to the understanding of the impacts, limits and ranges of two socialized instances - the media and school - in the social life of contemporary youth. Considering that the media and school appear as strong producers of symbolic activities, we seek to discuss their different dynamics and temporalities, from the viewpoint of young interviewed, the uses and meanings they attributed to each of these instances. Assuming that these uses and meanings are directly related to the social position of young people and, consequently, their respective habitus, methodological research is structured in field work, covering the school environment observation and interviews with students and teachers in three schools located in the city of Araraquara, setting up two worlds and different socio-cultural, or two forms of youth, sharing different cultural codes and holding different skills: one who frequents a private school (from Progresso high school and Neruda high school) and someone else who frequents the Public School (Victor Lacorte Public school). To do so, alongside the theoretical contributions of Pierre Bourdieu (mainly with the concept of habitus, lifestyles and field), it resorts to the theoretical framework developed by Anthony Giddens, relying mainly on the notion of reflexivity and the notion of duality of structure for the analysis of the different processes of identity construction, as well as the variety of uses and meanings attributed to the content propitiated by the school and the media (television and Internet) by the two groups of young people surveyed. The field work aims to analyze the moment of reflexive modernity, which has its overthrows, its discontinuities produced by the media and also at the same time maintaining the traditions and processes with residual strength of sense, supported at times by school, family and religion

Abstract:
The uptake of Internet voting for local government elections is still in its infancy worldwide. While it holds many potential benefits, there are various factors which can influence its uptake. This chapter explores the sociological factors which affect voter participation in Internet voting. It identifies 5 main influential factors, or groups of factors: trust; apathy; features of the Internet; access; and socio-technical aspects. Each is explored and ways in which each can be addressed in order to ensure optimal participation are discussed. A model conceptualizing the relative influence of these sociological factors is proposed and, finally, suggestions are made for future research.

Abstract:
The present chapter aims to explore the relationship between social media and identity by reviewing theoretical frameworks as well as empirical studies on the topic. Considering the complexity of the concept of identity, a multidisciplinary theoretical approach is provided, including Psychological Theories, Sociological Theories and Communication Theories. These theories are revisited in the context of online identity formation and communication through social media. Different aspects of identity such as gender identity, professional identity, political identity etc., are discussed and illustrated through empirical studies in the field. Moreover, the role of social media as a factor that might either promote or hinder identity development is also discussed (e.g., phenomena such as cyber-bulling and internet addiction). Finally recommendations and suggestions for future research are provided, including the need for multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks to the investigation of the relationships between social media and identity.

Roche, Maurice. "Mega-events and macro-social change." In Mega-Events and Social Change. Manchester University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.7228/manchester/9781526117083.003.0002.

Abstract:
This chapter outlines a new sociological framework for exploring the deeper and broader contexts of macro-social change in an era of globalisation which are relevant to understanding contemporary mega-events. It suggests that in recent decades Western society in particular has entered a ‘second phase’ in the modernization process marked by changes in the media (i.e. the digital revolution and the rise of the internet), in urbanisation processes (e.g. post-industrial urban regeneration in a context of ecological crisis), and in global geo-politics (i.e. the rise of China and of other ‘emerging’ countries and world regions). On this basis the chapter then indicates how this analysis of macro-social change generally connects with three key sets of changes in and around the world of mega-events in media, urban and global locational aspects of mega-events. These three sets of inter-connected contextual and mega-event changes are explored in further detail in the three main Parts of the book.

Abstract:
This chapter uses Omi and Winant’s racial formation theory to explore the assumptions surrounding race in music education research. Noting that that race cannot be reduced to other sociological concepts such as national identity, ethnicity, or class, the chapter argues that by simplifying or essentializing race, researchers have overlooked nuanced differences within and among racialized groups. Suggesting that existing studies “interpret, represent, or explain racial identities and meanings,” it urges researchers to construct deeper views of the material and social aspects of race in order to develop antiracist research projects. It concludes with considerations for planning, implementing, analyzing, interpreting, publishing, and consuming research on race in music education.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the workings of power on the body and the centrality of power as a sociological and historical theme. It explores the dynamics of power in imperial situations and assesses the value of comparative studies in colonial discourse by examining aspects of sex in the Roman world and more recent colonial societies. The chapter is also written in reaction to much recent scholarship on the concept of power in the Roman world. While the specific subject is sexual power and its effect on shaping Roman sexual attitudes, the broader aim is to refocus interest on the distorting influence of power on social development and change in the Roman world.

Abstract:
Abstract Units are conveyed in detail in Chapter 5. Two units are included. The first concerns rationality. Actors within the metatheory are assumed to follow self-interest, that is, instrumental rationality. This contrasts to normative rationality, which would assess behavior on the basis of a moral standard. The second type of unit is the system of explanation, which refers to encompassing entities such as paradigms or research programs that provide an organizing principle for a given discipline. After a review of existing options regarding systems of explanation, a synthesis is developed: the research enterprise. The concept of a research enterprise brings together the best aspects of (i) inductive and sociological and (ii) deductive and rationalist predecessors among systems of explanation. Creation of the research enterprise as an amalgam of positive features from systems of explanation that have found significant application in IR reflects a commitment to analytic eclecticism.

Abstract:
This chapter describes some of the special challenges and novelties facing historical research in quantum gravity. Though often looked at with wry amusement when mentioned in the same breath, “history” and “quantum gravity” fit remarkably well together. Not only is there more than enough in chronological terms, the episodes are closely intertwined with other important developments in the life histories of the ingredient theories, quantum theory and general relativity. However, there are also more sociologically interesting aspects having to do with the emergence of a community of quantum gravity scholars, itself piggybacking on the availability of funding sources. Finally, we note the special status of quantum gravity, historiographically speaking, as a rare case of a field of research with more than a century of history behind it, including within it various rejections and selections of results, and yet which has as yet no experiments of its own, and no final endpoint from which to interpret the past.

Abstract:
Abstract Increased use of machine-learning algorithms in all aspects of society has worsened the impact of online behavioral biases on historically disadvantaged populations, enabling discriminatory practices in hiring, loan approvals, child welfare determinations, access to public benefits, policing, and more. While companies have sought to self-regulate such problems, they have failed to enact concrete change. To address this problem, an incentive-based rating system, which is modeled, in part, after the United States federal government’s Energy Star program, is proposed to better identify and mitigate online biases. Rating systems can implore computer and data scientists, as well as the industries that license and disseminate algorithms, to improve their interrogation of algorithms’ sociological implications and incorporate non-technical actors and practices to inform their design and execution. Such incentives can differentiate the developers and companies who seek transparency and feedback around their concerns for more fair, inclusive, and ethical artificial intelligence systems. In addition to promoting the use of rating systems, this chapter offers a framework for them when applied to AI, including a set of questions that can be asked of internal and external stakeholders, like those assessing the diversity of the work team, data quality, transparency, and feedback from user groups. The chapter concludes with a discussion around the role of public policies and potential regulatory enforcements that can make AI rating systems more formidable, especially in use cases that have adverse impact on users.

Abstract:
Translating means accepting a text as a culture-based message, understanding it and communicating it in another language, so that readers who are not proficient in the source language can also take note of the original message and, if necessary, react to it. Sociological models like systems theory and social difference theory can be mentioned in this regard, but they analyse factors that establish communication as a system working independently of the translating person. The sociology of a person’s world-relationship, so to speak, reflects the import of her actions in a given society in terms of a relationship between the subject and its environment. This is symbolic of the translator’s intrinsic interest in the message in her relation to the texts, and in the relation between such texts and different cultures. To refer to the translator is to refer to her as a subject who acts with cognition, acknowledges social embedding, and asserts her individualism. Understanding means being addressed by the voice in a text concerning the specific content. The understanding of texts as a basis for translation is determined by the hermeneutic circle and the individual’s subjective knowledge, while undertaking a translation requires rhetorical proficiency in literary and functional styles. All this comes together in a hermeneutic translational competence which is built up by various dimensions of knowledge and abilities. The task is to establish a hierarchy of important aspects for every single text that is under translation.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The scientific report is dedicated to problems related to tennis at the Institute of Education, which participates in the processes of socialization to sports through sports programs. Research interest is also related to the opportunities for adequate socialization through tennis, as a major mechanism for maintaining social order in modern society. The aim of the empirical sociological research is to reveal some aspects related to the main forms of physical education classes for students and organized independent extracurricular activities in tennis in the system of Bulgarian school education and subsequent adequate socialization through sports. The object of this study are a total of 120 students from municipal and private schools in Sofia and Plovdiv. To solve the main tasks, achieve the goal and prove the hypothesis, a complex methodology of research of literature sources, observation, talk, content analysis is applied. Specially developed questionnaires were used. Based on an in-depth analysis of qualitative and quantitative data related to the issues in different schools, the attitude to the learning process is studied, different aspects of the activities are analyzed and practical measures for improving student preparation are outlined, including opportunities for additional funding for schools. Conclusion: knowledge and creative mastery of knowledge in this field of science and their application in practice changes in a positive direction the physical development and ability to work, and as a result the health and academic performance of students.

Abstract:
Social inequality has become of great importance nowadays, and it is in metropolitan areas where it appears to be more intense. Thus, inequality becomes unavoidable when rethinking the contemporary cities. To get a grasp of this phenomenon, for the first time in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, a common look between urban morphology and social cohesion is made. The goal is to describe the socio-morphologic structure of the metropolitan territory, which is the result of combining both categorizations and maps of the existing sociological and morphological aspects. For such purpose, a two-stage methodology has been used. The first stage develops the quantitative and qualitative criteria to overlap the two existing maps, and stablishes the areas that will be considered the new socio-morphologic fabrics. The second one applies the areal interpolation method to assign this socioeconomic and/or demographic information to these new fabrics. The result of this combination is a categorization of twenty-one types of fabrics that describes the socio-morphological metropolitan reality. This new categorization sheds light on a tight relationship between urban shape and social cohesion, both conditioning each other. Moreover, the new map shows socio-morphological similarities between distant areas and announces common urban strategies to achieve a larger urban equity. The interest of having this new approach increases when thinking in the new investigation lines that will be derived from there. One of them would be the evolutionary reconstruction, which will allow visualizing processes and ease the understanding of certain phenomena to foresee urban blight.

Abstract:
The terms "entrepreneurship "and "entrepreneur" have become increasingly used around the world because entrepreneurship tends to be associated with the economic development and well-being of a nation. When we refer to entrepreneurship education, we must consider not only formal education, which is very important in fact business administration, marketing, sales, human resources, communication and PR, finance but also getting in touch with entrepreneurial models. Therefore, entrepreneurship education is different from traditional academic education and involves the soading of unique aspirations and attitudes to entrepreneurs, which can only develop through contact with entrepreneurial success stories and through contact with entrepreneurs who have succeeded. But just as importantly, young people need to understand not only a romanticised interpretation of entrepreneurship, but also the negative aspects of starting a business. Comparing with entrepreneurs from other countries we are among the last to see the potential of success stories in entrepreneurship education and we are the first by the perceived importance of formal tertiary education. This last type of education could best be supported by government measures, because the universities in Romania are predominantly "state-owned". The general objective of the present research is represented by identifying the profile of young people from the North-East area who intend to open a business in the near / distant future in order to be able to get an overview of the interest that young people show in the business environment. Within quantitative methods of data processing, the basic is the sociological survey, and the main tool for collecting data is the questionnaire. All study tools are administered and applied online, and the collection and centralization of data is done automatically and securely.
