Full textThe development of Quality of Service (QoS) architectures for the Internet is a problem that has received significative attention recently. The large scale deployment of such architectures has being blocked by several reasons, such as, the dificulty in establishing Service Level Agreements (SLA) of QoS policies between users, Internet Service Providers (ISP) and operators, and the lack of mechanisms on the network to request services with quality guarantees. Despite of not having access to a service that can guarantee certain levels of performance per aplication, the Internet users are getting more and more concerned about the network quality. That can be confirmed by the number of users that are migrating to the broadband Internet access. The ISP´s, specially the broadband ones, must take measurements to manage their resources to satisfy the users´ expectations of quality and stay competitive on the market. In this work, problems have being identified at the processes used by a broadband ISP, the MLS Wireless. With the old system, certain situations could cause the denial of service due the number of simultaneos connections or degradation and increased latency due the lack of fairness to share the network resources. This work suggests some solutions for these deficiencies, implementing and analyzing their effectiveness. To fix the denial of service, we suggest the limitation of resources per user, so that the total capacity won´t be depleted. To have the resources more fairly distributed among the users, a new mechanism of sharing is implemented, based on a discipline named SFQ (Stochastic Fairness Queueing). The results show that those modifications have being effective. The time to access services like WWW and e-mail during congestion periods was drasticaly reduced, in some cases, from about 1 minute to less than 10 seconds.

Full textIn the digital era, the number of connected objects continues to grow and diversify. To support this increasing complexity, we wanted to bring a maximum of automatisms to the Internet of Things in order to guarantee end-to-end quality of service (QoS). To do this, a self-controlled service component is proposed to integrate the object into the digital ecosystem. Thanks to the calibration of each service, which makes it possible to know the behaviour, an automated composition becomes possible. We have illustrated the feasibility of our approach on a case study. We also have shown how connected objects can assemble themselves, cooperating to achieve a common objective, while meeting global QoS requirements

Broadly speaking, service networks have been departing from a monolithic model to a model of service creation that allows or - most often - requires the cooperation between several Service Providers (SP). The Internet, that has been driving and pushing for service convergence, shows that it is becoming virtually impossible for an operator to provide, alone and by itself, a valuable service to end-users. This thesis focuses on transport services (e.g., connectivity) and discusses the impact of the business boundaries on service offerings. The central question is the following: what changes when the same service is delivered, not by one, but by more than one SP? On one hand, this thesis covers, in abstract, the notion of Service Provider, how it has evolved and where it is evolving to, particularly in the context of many SPs. The first chapters of this thesis analyze and propose architectures for inter-SP cooperation and for well-known services such as multimédia communications. On the other hand, it offers practical and evaluated solutions to some problems that are still open, in the area of Inter-domain routing, Quality-of-Service, Mobility and Content Distribution, such as the presented contributions to the impact of independent the administrative notion of Autonomous Systems on inter-domain routing, an inter-domain transport architecture and the raised problem of inefficiency of uncooperatively provisioned Content-Delivery Networks.

Full textIn the mid-1990’s, the global computer network known as the Internet was introduced in Sweden. With this study, we are shining a light on the entrance of Swedish Public Service media on the Internet. The two major Swedish Public Service companies Sveriges Television (“Swedish Television”, also called SVT) and Sveriges Radio (“Swedish Radio”, also called SR) are included in this study.
SR published its first website in 1994 and the site featured a presentation of the results from the Swedish parliament elections of that year. SVT published its first website in 1995, when the company wanted to find a way to develop the classic teletext.
The reason why we are studying these companies is that we wanted to find out why two publically funded companies decided to enter the new and relatively unknown Internet platform at a time when only three percent of the Swedish population had Internet access at home.
We have interviewed technicians and board members working for either SR or SVT at the time surrounding their entry on the Internet and we have also accessed board documents and other written information from the companies.
The study shows that both SR and SVT had an early presence on the Internet but without really investing. The respective boards were unsure about the usefulness of the new platform and the technicians were working without getting, according to themselves, enough time and money. The situation changed at the beginning of the 21st century, after the timeframe of our study.

Full textBotnets are compromised hosts under a common command and control infrastructure. These nets have become very popular because of their potential for various malicious activity. They are frequently used for distributed denial-of-service attacks, spamming, spreading malware and privacy invasion. Manually uncovering and responding to such hosts is difficult and costly. In this thesis a technique for uncovering and reporting botnet activity in an internet service provider environment is presented and tested. Using a list of known botnet controllers, an ISP can proactivly warn customers of likely compromised hosts while at the same time mitigate future ill-effects by severing communications between the compromised host and the controller. A prototype system is developed to route traffic destined for controllers to a sinkhole host, then analyse and drop the traffic. After using the system in a live environment at the norwegian reasearch and education network the technique has proven to be a feasable one, and is used in a incident response test-case, warning two big customers of likely compromised hosts. However, there are challenges in tracking down and following up such hosts, especially ``roaming'' hosts such as laptops. The scope of the problem is found to be serious, with the expected number of new hosts found to be about 75 per day. Considering that the list used represents only part of the actual controllers active on the internet, the need for an automated incident response seems clear.

Full texthigh bandwidth, scalability, minimum delay, jitter and channel switch time. IP multicast, IMS (IP Multimedia System) Protocol and peer-to-peer approaches are proposed for implementing IPTV. However, IP multicast requires all the routers in the core network to possess multicast capability, IMS does not easily scale and P2P cannot eciently utilize the network resources because of its completely distributed nature. To this end, we propose new application layer multicast protocol Cluster Based Application Layer Multicast IPTV (CALMTV) which combines application layer multicast, scalable video coding and probing techniques to meet IPTV requirements. We present the components and their relevant algorithms and evaluate the performance of CALMTV with ns2 simulations. Our results compared with the published results of other IPTV architectures show that CALMTV has better performance in end-to-end delay and zapping time.

Full textModern Internet services are multi-tiered and are typically hosted in virtualized shared platforms. While facilitating flexible service deployment, multi-tier architecture introduces significant challenges for Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in hosted Internet services. Complex inter-tier dependencies and dynamic bottleneck tier shift are challenges inherent to tiered architectures. Hard-to-predict and bursty session-based Internet workloads further magnify this complexity. Virtualization of shared platforms adds yet another layer of complication in managing the hosted multi-tier Internet services.
We consider three critical aspects of Internet service management for improved performance and quality of service provisioning : admission control, dynamic resource provisioning and service differentiation. This thesis concentrates on statistical learning based approaches for multi-tier Internet service management to achieve efficient, balanced and scalable services. Statistical learning techniques are capable of solving complex dynamic problems through learning and adaptation with no priori domain-specific knowledge. We explore the effectiveness of supervised and unsupervised learning in managing multi-tier Internet services.
First, we develop a session based admission control strategy to improve session throughput of multi- tier Internet services. Using a supervised bayesian network, it achieves coordination among multiple tiers resulting in a balanced service. Second, we promote session-slowdown, a novel session-oriented metric for user perceived performance. We develop a regression based dynamic resource provisioning strategy, which utilizes a combination of offline training and online monitoring, for session slowdown guarantees in multi-tier systems. Third, we develop a reinforcement learning based coordinated combination of admission control and adaptive resource management for multi-tier Internet service differentiation and performance improvement in a shared virtualized platform. It addresses limitations of supervised learning by integrating model-independence of reinforcement learning and self-learning of neural networks for system scalability and agility. Finally, we develop an user interface based Monitoring and Management Console, intended for an administrator to monitor and fine tune the performance of hosted multi-tier Internet services.
We evaluate the developed management approaches using an e-commerce simulator and an implementation testbed on a virtualized blade server system hosting multi-tier RUBiS benchmark applications. Results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of statistical learning approaches for QoS provisioning and performance improvement in virtualized multi-tier Internet services.

Individual users, businesses, and governments have become functionally dependent on the Internet's connectivity to interact at the most basic levels of social and economic intercourse. Yet self-propagating worms and distributed denial of service attacks have demonstrated that disruption of the Internet infrastructure can be quickly achieved despite the vast knowledge of vulnerabilities and readily available subscriber-based countermeasures. In part, this condition is made possible because networks continue to operate under an obsolete subscriber-centric security paradigm that is based on all end users being trusted to act appropriately. This thesis develops the idea of an Internet Service Provider (ISP)- centric security approach by examining the types, roles, security mechanisms, and operational precepts of ISP's to illustrate their functional control within the infrastructure. Denial of service and worm attacks are detailed to provide the context for an emerging set of conditions that forms the basis of the requirement for the ISP approach. This paper concludes by examining four enabling technologies currently available that, used uniformly, provide ISPs with the framework to implement Internet based security that can serve to enhance the layered defense model and invoke the tenants of best practices.

Full textGrowing and expanding so-called Information Society, the most valuable asset is the intellectual, either in its technological aspect, commercial or authorial. The Information Society has led to controversial issues: one on intellectual property specifically relating to copyright in the network, dealt with different perspectives, different laws and dissimilar trends. Precisely in this research will address the liability of Internet Service Providers (ISP) for unauthorized downloads against copyright. For this study will address the various laws and treaties that have governed the issue, the protection mechanisms and the positions embraced by each country in order to protect the copyright. As you will see there is a single outlet to the problem of unauthorized downloads, will depend on the system hosted by each country, but what if it is conclusive that there is still that all countries in the world to adopt a system of protection for individual good is most valuable as intellectual property.

Full textA holistic consideration of the qualitative composition of descriptive artefacts in the Internet of Services through specifically designed service platforms increases the quality of experience for the users of the offered services. In this dissertation, the existing methods for the recognition, propagation and improvement of quality metrics in service-oriented architectures are systematically included in methods related to these increased requirements. The work delivers two scientific contributions. The first one encompasses a concept for the incremental improvement of quality of services via the use of runtime mechanisms for the dynamic description and rating of non-functional properties. The second one carries a definition of an abstract interplay of architecture patterns and processes for the contractually safeguarded guarantee of quality of service properties in service ecosystems in the form of a reference architecture

Full textInternet Telephony defined as real time voice or multimediacommunications over packet switched networks dates back to theearly days of the Internet. ARPA's Network SecureCommunications project had implemented, as early as December1973, an infrastructure for local and transnet real time voicecommunication. Two main sets of standards have emerged: H. 323from the ITU-T and the session initiation protocol (SIP) fromthe Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Both includespecifications for value added services. Value added services,or more simply services, are critical to service providers'survival and success. Unfortunately, the service architecturesthat come with the ITU-T and the IETF sets of standards arerather weak. Although they are constantly evolving, alternatives and complements need to be researched. This thesiswhich is made up of a formal dissertation and 6 appendices, proposes a novel mobile agent based service architecture forInternet Telephony. The architecture addresses the issues noneof the existing architectures solves in a satisfactory manner.Furthermore it adds mobile agents to the panoply of servicecreation tools. The appendices are reprints of articlespublished in refereed magazines/journals or under considerationfor publication. The formal dissertation is a summary of thepublications. A consistent and comprehensive set ofrequirements are derived. They are TINA-C flavored, but adaptedto Internet Telephony. They are used to critically reviewrelated work and also used to motivate the use of mobile agentsas the pillars of a novel architecture. The components of thisnovel architecture are identified. The key component is themobile service agent. It acts as a folder and carriesservice(s) to which the end-user has subscribed. Mobile serviceagents need to be upgraded when new versions of service logicare available and when end-users make changes to service data. This thesis proposes a novel upgrading framework. The currentInternet infrastructure comprises a wide range of hosts. Mobileagent platforms are now available for most of thesehosts/clients including memory/processing power constrainedPDAs. Our mobile service agents need to adapt to hostvariability when roaming. A novel adaptivity framework is alsoproposed. These two frameworks are general and can be appliedto any other mobile agent which meets a basic set ofassumptions. A key advantage of a mobile agent based servicearchitecture is that it enables the developement of mobileagent based services. The thesis proposes a novel mobile agentbased multi-party session scheduler. The feasibility and theadvantages of the architecture proposed by this thesis havebeen demonstrated by a prototype on which measurements havebeen made. Future work includes the addition of a securityframework to the architecture, and refinenements to theupgrading and adaptivity frameworks. More mobile agent basedservices, especially mobile multi agent based services willalso be developed.

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to design and implement a small scaleInternet Service Provider (ISP) for the NetCenter sub department atMälardalen University. The ISP is intended to give NetCenter a networkseparate from the University’s network, providing them with a moreflexible environment for lab purposes. This will give their students anopportunity to experience a larger backbone with Internet accessibility, which has not been previously available. At the same time it will place theteachers in control of the network in the NetCenter lab premises. The network is designed with a layered approach including an Internetaccess layer, a larger core segment and a distribution layer with aseparated lab network. It also incorporates both a public and a privateserver network, housing servers running e.g. Windows Active Directory, external DNS services, monitoring tools and logging applications. TheInternet access is achieved by peering with SUNET providing a full BGPfeed. This thesis report presents methods, implementations and results involvedin successfully creating the NetCenter ISP as both a lab network and anInternet provider with a few inevitable shortcomings; the most prominentbeing an incomplete Windows Domain setup.
