Abstract:
The aim of this Masters Thesis is to propose to SYSteam Nät AB, a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Uppsala, Sweden, how to implement IP telephony in their existing ITinfrastructure as a service to their customers. Thus the perspective of the thesis will be that of a local Internet Service Provider. Three general areas are covered in the thesis: Market and Business Model, Technology, and Economics. Important issues for SYSteam Nät AB as an established local broadband Internet Service Provider are to both retain present customers and to attract new customers. Some believe that offering value added services such as IP telephony could do this. Implementation of IP telephony can be done in different ways to fulfil SYSteam Nät’s requirements. The analysis leads to a proposal of how SYSteam Nät could implement IP telephony. This involves many multi-faceted business, technical, and financial issues; each aspect is examined in this thesis.

Abstract:
The development of Quality of Service (QoS) architectures for the Internet is a problem that has received significative attention recently. The large scale deployment of such architectures has being blocked by several reasons, such as, the dificulty in establishing Service Level Agreements (SLA) of QoS policies between users, Internet Service Providers (ISP) and operators, and the lack of mechanisms on the network to request services with quality guarantees. Despite of not having access to a service that can guarantee certain levels of performance per aplication, the Internet users are getting more and more concerned about the network quality. That can be confirmed by the number of users that are migrating to the broadband Internet access. The ISP´s, specially the broadband ones, must take measurements to manage their resources to satisfy the users´ expectations of quality and stay competitive on the market. In this work, problems have being identified at the processes used by a broadband ISP, the MLS Wireless. With the old system, certain situations could cause the denial of service due the number of simultaneos connections or degradation and increased latency due the lack of fairness to share the network resources. This work suggests some solutions for these deficiencies, implementing and analyzing their effectiveness. To fix the denial of service, we suggest the limitation of resources per user, so that the total capacity won´t be depleted. To have the resources more fairly distributed among the users, a new mechanism of sharing is implemented, based on a discipline named SFQ (Stochastic Fairness Queueing). The results show that those modifications have being effective. The time to access services like WWW and e-mail during congestion periods was drasticaly reduced, in some cases, from about 1 minute to less than 10 seconds.

Abstract:
Business across the Internet has increased in recent years and most companies that are selling trips have increased their sales online. Many companies that are selling trips strive for customers to receive and experience a personal service online. The meeting between the client and a webpage service system on the Internet should work. Service encounters are an essential part of the contact between customer and company and play a big part in how the first impression is perceived by the customer. To understand how a service encounter works, meeting face to face, companies need to understand how customers perceive that meeting. Among other things, personnel and customers confront each other in a physical meeting and during the first few seconds is what Normann (2002) call the moment of truth. The purpose of this paper is to find out how service is working over the Internet. We also want to contribute with increased insight of the interaction between customer and provider over the Internet. To examine how service works over the Internet and how customers are treated. Theories that include e-CRM, Image concept and e-SERVQUAL have been used. Interviews took place with various actors within the tourism industry. Parasuraman, et al. (2002) and Kuo, et al. (2005) say that companies need to understand what the customer wants to do on their website and meet the needs of the customer and to exceed customers’ expectations.

Abstract:
In the digital era, the number of connected objects continues to grow and diversify. To support this increasing complexity, we wanted to bring a maximum of automatisms to the Internet of Things in order to guarantee end-to-end quality of service (QoS). To do this, a self-controlled service component is proposed to integrate the object into the digital ecosystem. Thanks to the calibration of each service, which makes it possible to know the behaviour, an automated composition becomes possible. We have illustrated the feasibility of our approach on a case study. We also have shown how connected objects can assemble themselves, cooperating to achieve a common objective, while meeting global QoS requirements

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis work is to establish the legal regulations of Internet service providers and establish that there is in fact a body of regulations in existence now for their regulation. While at this time there is feeling in the marketplace that there is insufficient legal regulation of Internet service providers, this thesis has uncovered an existing statutory regime of regulations and obligations. In addition to this existing statutory regime there is further emerging regulations and obligations currently in progress and it can be expected that it will continue to emerge with the industry emergency. Form a commercial perspective it has been shown that the telecommunications, information technology, communications and entertainment industries are converging with the Internet as a mutual channel for delivery of their existing services. This emergence of a merged industry places the Internet service provider in an interesting position from a regulatory perspective. The Internet service provider is in fact regulated not only by a number of legislative pieces, but also by a number oflegislative bodies. The term Internet service provider is not an easily defined term. The legal definition is found in the legislation based upon the commercial decisions that the Internet service provider makes, and the term itself is only used in the Broadcasting Services Act. The definition from a layperson point of view is less defined and in many instances does not contain significant correlation with the laypersons expectation of the definition of the term. The life span of the term Internet service provider is questionable. It is difficult to ascertain how long the term will be in common use with the rapid emergence of technology, and if it is still in common usage, if it will have the same meaning as it does at the time of this thesis.

Abstract:
Abstract The current Internet infrastructure must be architected to handle future media-rich, and content rich applications. The success of applications such as video-on-demand, multicast and content distribution depends on Quality of Service and bandwidth guarantees. Over the years, the Internet has encompassed many changes in traffic profiles and applications, in bandwidths and utilization, but the future Internet infrastructure necessitates a very different architecture supporting Quality of Service (QoS). A satellite, distinguished by features such as global coverage, bandwidth flexibility, broadcast, multicast, and reliability, is an excellent candidate to provide broadband integrated Internet access. The aim of this thesis is to explore suitability of satellite technologies for broadband Internet services with significant emphasis on the question of defining, assessing, and developing QoS models for satellite ATM and IP broadband networks with and without onboard processing. For the satellite Internet, Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) performance is degraded due to long propagation delays, link errors, and bandwidth asymmetry. In this thesis, for satellite ATM, fundamental questions such as buffer requirements, TCP/ATM efficiency, fairness, and multiple access are addressed through extensive simulations in a quantitative way. Buffer designs for TCP over satellite ATM Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) service are performed. A buffer size equal to half the round trip delay-bandwidth product of the TCP connections provides high efficiency for TCP over satellite UBR. An extensive TCP analysis via simulation study for various TCP mechanisms and end system policies show that for satellite environment end system policies are more important than switch drop policies in terms of efficiency and fairness for World Wide Web traffic. A bandwidth allocation scheme is proposed and analytical model for supporting voice and video service over a broadband satellite network is developed. The study results demonstrate that non-contiguous allocation can afford higher gain in uplink utilizations. In this thesis, for the first time, Integrated Services and Differentiated Services based QoS architectures for broadband satellite IP networks are proposed and analyzed. In multimedia applications where User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is used along with TCP, a fair excess bandwidth allocation is not possible because TCP is congestion sensitive whereas UDP is congestion insensitive. An extensive simulation model is developed to study the effect of precedence levels for reserved rate utilization and fairness with different buffer management policies. The simulation results indicate that three levels of precedence are required for better utilization. Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) over Satellite network has been proposed and a simulation model developed to study the throughput performance impacts for TCP and UDP. The traffic engineering of MPLS facilitates efficient and reliable network design to optimize the utilization of network resources and enhance the network QoS. A novel Code Division Multiple Access based Spread ALOHA single code multiple access scheme for broadband satellite return channel is proposed as an alternative to Multifrequency-Time Division Multiple Access based Digital Video Broadcasting-Return Channel via Satellite protocol. It is shown through Monte Carlo simulations that throughput for Spread ALOHA One Long Code equivalent to packet length, is better than Spread ALOHA One Code in which spreading sequence repeats every symbol. The reduction of throughput due to multi-user interference for different number of users is shown. Further research on QoS architectures, performance models for TCP enhancements, interworking functions, interoperability, and standardization efforts is included.

Abstract:
Broadly speaking, service networks have been departing from a monolithic model to a model of service creation that allows or - most often - requires the cooperation between several Service Providers (SP). The Internet, that has been driving and pushing for service convergence, shows that it is becoming virtually impossible for an operator to provide, alone and by itself, a valuable service to end-users. This thesis focuses on transport services (e.g., connectivity) and discusses the impact of the business boundaries on service offerings. The central question is the following: what changes when the same service is delivered, not by one, but by more than one SP? On one hand, this thesis covers, in abstract, the notion of Service Provider, how it has evolved and where it is evolving to, particularly in the context of many SPs. The first chapters of this thesis analyze and propose architectures for inter-SP cooperation and for well-known services such as multimédia communications. On the other hand, it offers practical and evaluated solutions to some problems that are still open, in the area of Inter-domain routing, Quality-of-Service, Mobility and Content Distribution, such as the presented contributions to the impact of independent the administrative notion of Autonomous Systems on inter-domain routing, an inter-domain transport architecture and the raised problem of inefficiency of uncooperatively provisioned Content-Delivery Networks.

Abstract:
The thesis addresses the research question: How to describe, understand, and explain IT service delivery? Based on the research question, the following research questions were derived:  How to analyse IT service delivery based on ITIL in order to determine its current situation? How to formalize elements of IT service delivery in maturity level that can be used to assess its current status? These research questions are answered by two IT artefacts: an analysis method and a maturity model for IT service delivery. Both of them are constructed by design-science research guidelines. The analysis method is focused on understanding the IT service delivery in organizations; it is founded on the IT service delivery processes of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) version 2. The method proposed has been applied through three case studies of Nicaraguan Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The maturity model is oriented to formalize and assess the maturity level of IT service delivery; it is supported by IT service delivery elements that are considered significant for managing IT service delivery by the Nicaraguan ISP sector, by IT service concepts, and by maturity model properties, and complemented by the IT Service Capability Maturity Model. The maturity model provides a mechanism for evaluating the maturity level of IT service delivery through a set of maturity statements and includes a graphical representation; it is also applied to the traceable information of the current status of IT service delivery of one of the Nicaraguan ISPs.

Abstract:

In the mid-1990’s, the global computer network known as the Internet was introduced in Sweden. With this study, we are shining a light on the entrance of Swedish Public Service media on the Internet. The two major Swedish Public Service companies Sveriges Television (“Swedish Television”, also called SVT) and Sveriges Radio (“Swedish Radio”, also called SR) are included in this study.

SR published its first website in 1994 and the site featured a presentation of the results from the Swedish parliament elections of that year. SVT published its first website in 1995, when the company wanted to find a way to develop the classic teletext.

The reason why we are studying these companies is that we wanted to find out why two publically funded companies decided to enter the new and relatively unknown Internet platform at a time when only three percent of the Swedish population had Internet access at home.

We have interviewed technicians and board members working for either SR or SVT at the time surrounding their entry on the Internet and we have also accessed board documents and other written information from the companies.

The study shows that both SR and SVT had an early presence on the Internet but without really investing. The respective boards were unsure about the usefulness of the new platform and the technicians were working without getting, according to themselves, enough time and money. The situation changed at the beginning of the 21st century, after the timeframe of our study.

Abstract:
Services that represent sensor and actuator nodes, together with service orchestration, aid in overcoming the heterogeneous structure of the Internet of Things (IoT). Interconnecting different sensor and actuator nodes and exposing them as services is a complex topic which is even more demanding for testing. Further effort is needed to enable common and effcient methodologies for testing IoT-based services. IoT-based services differ from web services since they usually interact with the physical environment via sensor and actuator nodes. This changes how testing can be performed. An open research question is thereby how to apply Model-Based Testing (MBT) approaches for facilitating scalable and ef cient test automation. This thesis introduces a novel test framework to facilitate functional evaluation of IoT- based services based on MBT methodologies. The concept separates the service logic from connected sensor and actuator nodes in a sandbox environment. Furthermore, a new IoT service behaviour model is designed for representing relevant characteristics of IoT-based services and ensuring the automated emulation of sensor nodes. The IoT-behaviour model proves to be automatically transformable into executable Test Cases (TCs). As a proof of concept, the automated test approach is prototypically implemented as a novel test tool. The execution of the TCs reveals, that crucial failures, such as unexpected messages, data types, or data values, can be detected during test execution. Deriving tests from a test model typically result in huge number of TCs, which cannot be executed within a reasonable time and with limited resources. To enhance the diversity of executed TCs, similarity investigation algorithms are proposed and validated. The results show that the proposed Diversity-based Steady State Genetic algorithm can outperform existing solutions up to 11.6 % with less computation time. With regard to verifying the failure detection rate, experiments show that the proposed Group Greedy algorithm can enhance the rate up to 29 %.

Abstract:
The last decade has seen explosive growth in Internet use, with the number of hosts growing rapidly year on year. The Internet has been able to withstand this colossal growth due to advances in technology (particularly in the field of optical communications) and the strength, stability and adaptability of its underlying. However, recent years have seen the emergence and deployment of a diverse range of multimedia and real time applications. These applications place increasing strain on the Internet infrastructure and its ability to provide adequate resources to meet the specific requirements of multimedia applications. There is a case to be made for changing the best effort nature of the Internet to enable some users/applications to receive better quality of service than others (for a price). The research presented in this thesis has examined the case for quality of service and the methodologies and implementations available to provide quality of service. In particular the differentiated services approach is evaluated through computer based modelling and simulation. Congestion management within the Internet is intrinsically linked to quality of service since congestion is typically the cause of any service degradation (such as increased delay and packet loss) which compromises the operation of multimedia applications. This research has compared a number of traditional congestion control schemes and thoroughly evaluated this operation and performance of the random early detection congestion avoidance scheme. The sensitivity of the random early detection algorithm to the setting of its parameters has been demonstrated and a potentially damaging flaw has been identified within the adaptive random early detection algorithm. Further research has evaluated a new and innovative distributed admission control scheme. No further details of this admission control scheme can be made available in this summary since it is the subject of an ongoing British Telecom Laboratories patent application.

Abstract:
Internet banking services have faced a considerable expansion in terms of the number of users in the last few years. This makes Internet as a financial service delivery platform witness a number challenges. One of these is offering better-quality services to existing customers as the quality of service is a key factor in the success of any organisation. Previous research studies indicate that a strong theory to understand this form of service is lacking. A comprehensive review of previous and contemporary literature on service quality suggests the need for the development of a valid instrument for measuring service quality from the end-user perspective in the specific context of Internet banking services. This research study proposes a revised and modified SERVQUAL model which incorporates several variables that reflects the industry-specific attributes of Internet banking services. A survey based research is used to collect primary data on the basis of Internet banking services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A multiple regression analysis is employed to examine the influence of the adapted determinants on service quality. Focus-group interviews are also conducted as a follow-up to the questionnaire study. The findings of both fieldworks indicate that reliability, responsiveness, website design, and personalisation determine service quality in the Internet banking context. This study presents the main findings derived from the research model which can be used by a wide range of financial institutions, which make use of the Internet in their business dealings, to support each organisation’s decision-making processes. Also, this model can be used as a blueprint for an organisation’s strategic planning. In addition to the research model, the researcher employs Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) that reveals a large of number of implications for the quality of service, which were not obvious prior to undertaking the research. The knowledge of such implications will help managers and decision-makers when they are required to allocate resources to certain tasks or functions.

Abstract:

Botnets are compromised hosts under a common command and control infrastructure. These nets have become very popular because of their potential for various malicious activity. They are frequently used for distributed denial-of-service attacks, spamming, spreading malware and privacy invasion. Manually uncovering and responding to such hosts is difficult and costly. In this thesis a technique for uncovering and reporting botnet activity in an internet service provider environment is presented and tested. Using a list of known botnet controllers, an ISP can proactivly warn customers of likely compromised hosts while at the same time mitigate future ill-effects by severing communications between the compromised host and the controller. A prototype system is developed to route traffic destined for controllers to a sinkhole host, then analyse and drop the traffic. After using the system in a live environment at the norwegian reasearch and education network the technique has proven to be a feasable one, and is used in a incident response test-case, warning two big customers of likely compromised hosts. However, there are challenges in tracking down and following up such hosts, especially ``roaming'' hosts such as laptops. The scope of the problem is found to be serious, with the expected number of new hosts found to be about 75 per day. Considering that the list used represents only part of the actual controllers active on the internet, the need for an automated incident response seems clear.

Abstract:
One of the main objectives when designing a Multi-Service Internet is to define a profitable and efficient network configuration. Network profit is a very important optimization objective for today's Internet Service Providers (ISP). However, successful optimization for a large system such as a nation wide Internet backbone supporting both voice and data services requires a fast-responding and high-efficient method. In this thesis, we explore the methodology for such optimization design and present a two-phase method. In the first phase, a mathematical method based on a Linear Programming (LP) solution technique is utilized as primitive method with simplified objective functions and constraints. A Hopfield Neural Network (HNN) model is applied in the second phase to get an extended optimization for the network performance aiming to effectively distribute the network traffic across the network. The method has been developed and applied to the design of a national Internet backbone network. Both models are formally defined, optimally formulated, and solved.

Abstract:
Multimedia applications over the Internet and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) gain a lot of attention. IPTV has a number of service requirements such as
high bandwidth, scalability, minimum delay, jitter and channel switch time. IP multicast, IMS (IP Multimedia System) Protocol and peer-to-peer approaches are proposed for implementing IPTV. However, IP multicast requires all the routers in the core network to possess multicast capability, IMS does not easily scale and P2P cannot eciently utilize the network resources because of its completely distributed nature. To this end, we propose new application layer multicast protocol Cluster Based Application Layer Multicast IPTV (CALMTV) which combines application layer multicast, scalable video coding and probing techniques to meet IPTV requirements. We present the components and their relevant algorithms and evaluate the performance of CALMTV with ns2 simulations. Our results compared with the published results of other IPTV architectures show that CALMTV has better performance in end-to-end delay and zapping time.

Abstract:

Modern Internet services are multi-tiered and are typically hosted in virtualized shared platforms. While facilitating flexible service deployment, multi-tier architecture introduces significant challenges for Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in hosted Internet services. Complex inter-tier dependencies and dynamic bottleneck tier shift are challenges inherent to tiered architectures. Hard-to-predict and bursty session-based Internet workloads further magnify this complexity. Virtualization of shared platforms adds yet another layer of complication in managing the hosted multi-tier Internet services.

We consider three critical aspects of Internet service management for improved performance and quality of service provisioning : admission control, dynamic resource provisioning and service differentiation. This thesis concentrates on statistical learning based approaches for multi-tier Internet service management to achieve efficient, balanced and scalable services. Statistical learning techniques are capable of solving complex dynamic problems through learning and adaptation with no priori domain-specific knowledge. We explore the effectiveness of supervised and unsupervised learning in managing multi-tier Internet services.

First, we develop a session based admission control strategy to improve session throughput of multi- tier Internet services. Using a supervised bayesian network, it achieves coordination among multiple tiers resulting in a balanced service. Second, we promote session-slowdown, a novel session-oriented metric for user perceived performance. We develop a regression based dynamic resource provisioning strategy, which utilizes a combination of offline training and online monitoring, for session slowdown guarantees in multi-tier systems. Third, we develop a reinforcement learning based coordinated combination of admission control and adaptive resource management for multi-tier Internet service differentiation and performance improvement in a shared virtualized platform. It addresses limitations of supervised learning by integrating model-independence of reinforcement learning and self-learning of neural networks for system scalability and agility. Finally, we develop an user interface based Monitoring and Management Console, intended for an administrator to monitor and fine tune the performance of hosted multi-tier Internet services.

We evaluate the developed management approaches using an e-commerce simulator and an implementation testbed on a virtualized blade server system hosting multi-tier RUBiS benchmark applications. Results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of statistical learning approaches for QoS provisioning and performance improvement in virtualized multi-tier Internet services.

Individual users, businesses, and governments have become functionally dependent on the Internet's connectivity to interact at the most basic levels of social and economic intercourse. Yet self-propagating worms and distributed denial of service attacks have demonstrated that disruption of the Internet infrastructure can be quickly achieved despite the vast knowledge of vulnerabilities and readily available subscriber-based countermeasures. In part, this condition is made possible because networks continue to operate under an obsolete subscriber-centric security paradigm that is based on all end users being trusted to act appropriately. This thesis develops the idea of an Internet Service Provider (ISP)- centric security approach by examining the types, roles, security mechanisms, and operational precepts of ISP's to illustrate their functional control within the infrastructure. Denial of service and worm attacks are detailed to provide the context for an emerging set of conditions that forms the basis of the requirement for the ISP approach. This paper concludes by examining four enabling technologies currently available that, used uniformly, provide ISPs with the framework to implement Internet based security that can serve to enhance the layered defense model and invoke the tenants of best practices.

Growing and expanding so-called Information Society, the most valuable asset is the intellectual, either in its technological aspect, commercial or authorial. The Information Society has led to controversial issues: one on intellectual property specifically relating to copyright in the network, dealt with different perspectives, different laws and dissimilar trends. Precisely in this research will address the liability of Internet Service Providers (ISP) for unauthorized downloads against copyright. For this study will address the various laws and treaties that have governed the issue, the protection mechanisms and the positions embraced by each country in order to protect the copyright. As you will see there is a single outlet to the problem of unauthorized downloads, will depend on the system hosted by each country, but what if it is conclusive that there is still that all countries in the world to adopt a system of protection for individual good is most valuable as intellectual property.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The vision of the Internet of Things (IoT) covers not only the well-regulated processes of the supply chain, but also a more diffuse concept of items in the physical world being connected to attributes in the virtual world. Achieving this goal will require unique identification of every item and a homogenous, interoperable, robust infrastructure to provide access to the item’s inherent attributes as well as those acquired as it moves around. Access to data that is stored somewhere in cyberspace and to which the exact address is unknown is generally achieved by using DNS with its naming hierarchy. RFCs 3401 to 3404 [45][47][46][44] describe a complementary method for using DNS as a distributed database for re-write rules that can be used to locate custom services. In this thesis, two demonstrators are designed and built to show a reliable and trust-worthy way of using the Internet of Things to efficiently connect products with services. In two real-life scenarios the demonstrators show the benefits of having products connected with useful information on the Internet. The directory service used is shown to be robust and scalable for connecting objects with services in the Internet of Things.

Abstract:
2002 bildsattes i princip ingen artikel.

A holistic consideration of the qualitative composition of descriptive artefacts in the Internet of Services through specifically designed service platforms increases the quality of experience for the users of the offered services. In this dissertation, the existing methods for the recognition, propagation and improvement of quality metrics in service-oriented architectures are systematically included in methods related to these increased requirements. The work delivers two scientific contributions. The first one encompasses a concept for the incremental improvement of quality of services via the use of runtime mechanisms for the dynamic description and rating of non-functional properties. The second one carries a definition of an abstract interplay of architecture patterns and processes for the contractually safeguarded guarantee of quality of service properties in service ecosystems in the form of a reference architecture

Abstract:

Internet Telephony defined as real time voice or multimediacommunications over packet switched networks dates back to theearly days of the Internet. ARPA's Network SecureCommunications project had implemented, as early as December1973, an infrastructure for local and transnet real time voicecommunication. Two main sets of standards have emerged: H. 323from the ITU-T and the session initiation protocol (SIP) fromthe Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Both includespecifications for value added services. Value added services,or more simply services, are critical to service providers'survival and success. Unfortunately, the service architecturesthat come with the ITU-T and the IETF sets of standards arerather weak. Although they are constantly evolving, alternatives and complements need to be researched. This thesiswhich is made up of a formal dissertation and 6 appendices, proposes a novel mobile agent based service architecture forInternet Telephony. The architecture addresses the issues noneof the existing architectures solves in a satisfactory manner.Furthermore it adds mobile agents to the panoply of servicecreation tools. The appendices are reprints of articlespublished in refereed magazines/journals or under considerationfor publication. The formal dissertation is a summary of thepublications. A consistent and comprehensive set ofrequirements are derived. They are TINA-C flavored, but adaptedto Internet Telephony. They are used to critically reviewrelated work and also used to motivate the use of mobile agentsas the pillars of a novel architecture. The components of thisnovel architecture are identified. The key component is themobile service agent. It acts as a folder and carriesservice(s) to which the end-user has subscribed. Mobile serviceagents need to be upgraded when new versions of service logicare available and when end-users make changes to service data. This thesis proposes a novel upgrading framework. The currentInternet infrastructure comprises a wide range of hosts. Mobileagent platforms are now available for most of thesehosts/clients including memory/processing power constrainedPDAs. Our mobile service agents need to adapt to hostvariability when roaming. A novel adaptivity framework is alsoproposed. These two frameworks are general and can be appliedto any other mobile agent which meets a basic set ofassumptions. A key advantage of a mobile agent based servicearchitecture is that it enables the developement of mobileagent based services. The thesis proposes a novel mobile agentbased multi-party session scheduler. The feasibility and theadvantages of the architecture proposed by this thesis havebeen demonstrated by a prototype on which measurements havebeen made. Future work includes the addition of a securityframework to the architecture, and refinenements to theupgrading and adaptivity frameworks. More mobile agent basedservices, especially mobile multi agent based services willalso be developed.

The objective of this thesis is to design and implement a small scaleInternet Service Provider (ISP) for the NetCenter sub department atMälardalen University. The ISP is intended to give NetCenter a networkseparate from the University’s network, providing them with a moreflexible environment for lab purposes. This will give their students anopportunity to experience a larger backbone with Internet accessibility, which has not been previously available. At the same time it will place theteachers in control of the network in the NetCenter lab premises. The network is designed with a layered approach including an Internetaccess layer, a larger core segment and a distribution layer with aseparated lab network. It also incorporates both a public and a privateserver network, housing servers running e.g. Windows Active Directory, external DNS services, monitoring tools and logging applications. TheInternet access is achieved by peering with SUNET providing a full BGPfeed. This thesis report presents methods, implementations and results involvedin successfully creating the NetCenter ISP as both a lab network and anInternet provider with a few inevitable shortcomings; the most prominentbeing an incomplete Windows Domain setup.

Abstract:
The programmable network envisioned in the 1990s within standardization and research for the Intelligent Network is currently coming into reality using IPbased Next Generation Networks (NGN) and applying Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) principles for service creation, execution, and hosting. SOA is the foundation for both next-generation telecommunications and middleware architectures, which are rapidly converging on top of commodity transport services. Services such as triple/quadruple play, multimedia messaging, and presence are enabled by the emerging service-oriented IPMultimedia Subsystem (IMS), and allow telecommunications service providers to maintain, if not improve, their position in the marketplace. SOA becomes the de facto standard in next-generation middleware systems as the system model of choice to interconnect service consumers and providers within and between enterprises. We leverage previous research activities in overlay networking technologies along with recent advances in network abstraction, service exposure, and service creation to develop a paradigm for a service environment providing converged Internet and Telecommunications services that we call Service Broker. Such a Service Broker provides mechanisms to combine and mediate between different service paradigms from the two domains Internet/WWW and telecommunications. Furthermore, it enables the composition of services across these domains and is capable of defining and applying temporal constraints during creation and execution time. By adding network-awareness into the service fabric, such a Service Broker may also act as a next generation network-to-service element allowing the composition of crossdomain and cross-layer network and service resources. The contribution of this research is threefold: first, we analyze and classify principles and technologies from Information Technologies (IT) and telecommunications to identify and discuss issues allowing cross-domain composition in a converging service layer. Second, we discuss service composition methods allowing the creation of converged services on an abstract level; in particular, we present a formalized method for model-checking of such compositions. Finally, we propose a Service Broker architecture converging Internet and Telecom services. This environment enables cross-domain feature interaction in services through formalized obligation policies acting as constraints during service discovery, creation, and execution time.

Abstract:
Despite the world-changing success of the Internet, shortcomings in its routing and forwarding system have become increasingly apparent. One symptom is an escalating tension between users and providers over the control of routing and forwarding of packets: providers understandably want to control use of their infrastructure, and users understandably want paths with sufficient quality-of-service (QoS) to improve the performance of their applications. As a result, users resort to various “hacks” such as sending traffic through intermediate end-systems, and the providers fight back with mechanisms to inspect and block such traffic. To enable users and providers to jointly control routing and forwarding policies, recent research has considered various architectural approaches in which provider- level route determination occurs separately from forwarding. With this separation, provider-level path computation and selection can be provided as a centralized service: users (or their applications) send path queries to a path service to obtain provider- level paths that meet their application-specific QoS requirements. At the same time, providers can control the use of their infrastructure by dictating how packets are forwarded across their network. The separation of routing and forwarding offers many advantages, but also brings a number of challenges such as scalability. In particular, the path service must respond to path queries in a timely manner and periodically collect topology information containing load-dependent (i.e., performance) routing information. We present a new design for a path service that makes use of expensive pre- computations, parallel on-demand computations on performance information, and caching of recently computed paths to achieve scalability. We demonstrate that, us- ing commodity hardware with a modest amount of resources, the path service can respond to path queries with acceptable latency under a realistic workload. The ser- vice can scale to arbitrarily large topologies through parallelism. Finally, we describe how to utilize the path service in the current Internet with existing Internet applica- tions.
