Internet technology has changed this world rapidly in the past decade. The influence of E-business on the economy and business practice has been tremendous. The focus of many companies has been on improving the extended enterprise transactions including Business-to Customer (B2C) and Business-to-Business (B2B). Facing this shift in corporate focus, more and more companies realize the importance of supply chain management in the global E-business environment. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the relationship between supply chain management and E-business, especially from international point of view. The analysis started from the review of supply chain management and E-business, further continued on the strategic impact of E-business on supply chain management and discussed the associate issues during the integration of E-business and supply chain. Finally, some future opportunities will be introduced to illustrate new developments in the E-supply chain environment, especially for small business.

Since the signing of NAFTA in 1993, North American automotive OEMs have moved final assembly and other manufacturing operations from domestic locations to international locations. Mexico provides a relatively inexpensive labor force and is within geographic proximity of the US. Tier One suppliers have also relocated some operations to Mexico, such as American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM) and its Guanajuato Gear & Axle (GGA) facility, where this study was performed. While the proportion of GGA's inbound material sourced in Mexico has increased, this still represents a small fraction of GGA's supply base. Numerous efforts have been made at localization of suppliers to Mexico, both through existing suppliers relocating and the development of Mexico-based suppliers. For the suppliers remaining in the US and Canada, there are numerous possible transportation solutions, including FTL, stacktrain, LTL, and milkruns. The crux of this thesis lies in the hypothesis that GGA would be better able to optimize logistics, if it had the ability to choose mode and frequency on a real time basis after having a more precise understanding of inbound material flow. A case study was then performed on the optimal manner in which to ship empty returnable containers to suppliers, which is established to be per container demand at the supplier site. Then, a model is developed and tested that takes as input the forecast of raw material shipments from GGA's entire supply base and outputs a set of packing lists that minimizes logistics cost while meeting supplier demand for empty containers.
(cont.) The model outputs are tested on a limited basis, but full implementation has not been conducted at the time of writing. Based on preliminary calculations, it is expected that implementation would have a significant impact on GGA logistics expense.

Full textUnibrands is a small company that has implemented a postponement strategy without knowing it. However, they have not implemented completely because they do not know the theories behind it. This report is an attempt to understand and analyze the problems of the implementation of postponement in the supply chain of Unibrands, in terms of examining the theoretical succeeds factors of postponement implementation in the case of Unibrands. The purpose is to determine what type of postponement strategy the supply chain use and what factors can hinder the use of postponement strategy in a SME fashion supply chain by applying an qualitative research approach. The collection of empirical data was through the interview guide approach in which we used meetings and telephone interviews with people representing Unibrands and their contact trading company. The results of this research can be concluded in few perspectives. Unibrands is imple-menting postponement in an improper format, with the results of several gaps in the supply chain related to the success factor in postponement. The request for the fully customization in colors and materials, the bottleneck of relationship developing which is caused by factory manager, complicated procedures for sample testing, and lack of knowledge of different relationships in the supply chain. Postponement is never perfect, but for Unibrands some problems could very well hinder the efficiency in the supply chain. Solutions are proposed to solve the problems in chain. The proposals suggest re-lationship improvement and information sharing. In addition, culture adaptation by in-volving the right people in the right process.

Returnable Transport Items (RTI) are a critical component of domestic and international trade. The large variability in the geographic supply and demand of goods shipped using RTI impacts the items overall availability at different locations within a network. This research focuses on improving our partner firm's RTI inventory supply in the United States and Canada by developing a one-month-ahead forecasting model to predict the net monthly international flows. To develop the model, six years of historical time series data was decomposed into key elements: level, trend, and seasonality. The results of the decomposition method were used to narrow the forecasting models considered to state space seasonal exponential, SARIMA, state space Holt-Winters, and multivariate regression methods. These four methods were then used to predict the pallet flows using two different approaches. In the first approach, two separate forecasting models were developed, one for the United States-to-Canada flows and the other for the Canada-to-United States flows. The derived Canada-to-United States value was then subtracted from the corresponding United States-to-Canada forecast to calculate the predicted net international movement. In the second approach, we forecasted the net pallet flows between the two countries utilizing only historical values of net international movements. Ultimately, 36 unique models were created using both approaches. The naive forecasting method served as a performance benchmark to the developed models. The performances of the 36 models were then compared using multiplicative and mean composite scores, both of which were based on three accuracy metrics: MAPE, MASE and MAD. Our research found that out of the 36 forecasting models, only seven models outperformed the baseline naive forecasting method. These seven forecasting models were further filtered by qualitative metrics such as ease of implementation and software platform dependence. The state space seasonal exponential model was ultimately recommended due to its superior performances on both the quantitative and qualitative metrics.

Globalization in sourcing and manufacturing is expected to offer several different kinds of benefits. Globalized companies can produce products at cheaper costs by accessing cheaper resources and they can be close to the local market, so that they can quickly react to the needs of local markets. However, there are risks involved in global expansion. Different countries have different cultures and environments. Political relationships between the countries and global economic challenges may also affect the reliability and the profitability of globalization. Globalization requires goods to travel longer, which in turn pushes up the logistics costs. Among all the challenges, this thesis focuses on the supply chain challenges of globalization and develops the strategies to address those challenges. The thesis will provide framework to help to make international supply chain decisions. Based on this framework and the current Honeywell's environment, it will identify four different improvement opportunities and associated solutions. Each opportunity will be evaluated by appropriate models. The goal of identifying Honeywell's improvement opportunities and evaluating them is to present some structural results for each supply chain option: how the trade-offs of the option can be optimized and in each case, which option works best. In the last part, the thesis will also discuss the implementation challenges. The organizational challenges will be analyzed by using the three lenses and the change management will be discussed.
(cont.) In addition to the organizational challenges, the communication challenges, which become more important in a global environment, will also be discussed. Although these are the challenges faced during the project at Honeywell, many companies that are trying to do global expansion experience same type of challenges. Thus, this discussion will help to address implementation issues that most companies face.

The research conducted for this thesis was performed at "Company X", a U.S.-based engineered goods manufacturer. This project focused on Company X's overall manufacturing strategy, with an emphasis on how global expansion of manufacturing can allow the company to achieve greater international sales growth. Company X's current strategy for supplying non-U.S. markets has largely relied on U.S. manufacturing and assembly, followed by exporting of finished goods. Due to a desire to increase international sales and a need to address tariff and non-tariff barriers in certain key markets, Company X must now evaluate opportunities for in-country manufacturing and assembly in its target markets. This project seeks to evaluate the high-level financial and operational risks of expanding Company X's current manufacturing operations through the use of three types of analysis: 1) A single-site cost analysis of material and inventory flow to an international site; 2) A global manufacturing capacity plan to serve regional markets; and, 3) An evaluation of qualitative risk factors affecting potential site selection. The single-site model involves the development of a simplified cost model. This model demonstrates the cost-competitiveness of each supply chain design alternative for serving a single international site, including the sensitivity of the model to changes in key cost drivers. The global model builds on the results of the single-site model and evaluates the opportunities for international sites to serve both in-country and regional demand for the top markets Company X is targeting.
(cont.) The site selection model addresses the operational and socio-political risks associated with investing in operations in new markets. The results of this analysis provide Company X with additional insights into which markets represent the best and lowest-risk opportunities for operational growth in the near future. Recommendations provided in this thesis will be used by Company X to expand and develop their new global manufacturing strategy and to achieve its goal of rapid international sales growth.

This study addresses a medical device company's need to relicense its products for export after declaring a new legal manufacturer. New license applications are approved at an unknown date with increasing probability within a finite time horizon. Approval results in the instantaneous obsolescence, or "sudden-death," of inventory bound for export. As a result, the company needs to re-align its supply chain strategy to avoid stock-outs or inventory obsolescence. This thesis develops a model that aids the organization in assessing the decisions and necessary information that can help navigate the transition. Potential responses include pushing inventory out of the system before obsolescence, or ramping down production in advance of the sudden-death event. Improved estimates of alternative distribution costs, shortage costs, salvage values, and production capacities will greatly aid the organization's ability to respond to the event scenario. Changing these factors suggest different optimal inventory policies. To illustrate this relationship, a dynamic programming model is derived based on a probability distributions for likely license approval times. The resulting model allows the organization to assess optimal inventory policies derived from various system assumptions. In the thesis, different product aggregations are used to assess inventory strategies for bulk-license application submission. Patterns are identified in the analysis of simulation runs, including the time period for starting alternative inventory ramp-up as well as ramp-down speed. The intent of the study is to provide an iterative method for experimenting with assumptions within the organization in order to drive a coordinated response to the sudden-death eVent. The method is intended to be useful to other organizations planning to transition in preparation-for events occurring with increasing likelihood within finite time horizons.

Full textCompanies are more and more moving to low wage regions like Eastern Europe and Asia to stay competitive. Instead of lowering the cost of production, it has been argued that a company can stay competitive through making the use of the resources more efficient. In this study the effects a German resource saving concept, involving reorganization towards processes and an Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) module, has on Supply Chain Management (SCM) are investigated. In addition to this a comparison between German best-practice companies and Swedish companies has been done. This comparison was conducted in order to determine the changes needed to be made when taking this German concept to Swedish companies.
The results of this study indicate that through the German resource saving concept major improvements in delivery performance, responsiveness, supply chain costs, and asset management can be achieved. Further, this study has shown that there are very good possibilities for Swedish companies at reaching these improvements successfully. Barriers to a success in Sweden include a lack of managerial commitment and hierarchies as well as outsourced IT departments at Swedish companies. Recommendations to overcome these barriers consist of training key users more thoroughly and stressing the importance of committed managers.

Full textIntroduction As the world is becoming increasingly integrated, many firms search for partners overseas with hope to find benefits. Internationalization is today the industrial norm, and in this new and ever-expanding environment, international purchasing has become a major challenge that firms have to face in their daily operations. Yet, despite the growing importance of international purchasing by retailers, previous studies have mainly focused on international purchasing by manufacturing firms, and as the authors have acknowledge the retailers' significance on the national markets, a gap has been identified.
Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to examine and map out the current state of Swedish retailers' international purchasing activities.
Method In order to fulfill the purpose, a quantitative research was chosen. In total, 74 telephone interviews have been conducted, resulting in a response rate of 80 percent. The sample was based on the 120 largest retailers in Sweden, with regards to turnover.
Conclusion Swedish retailers have been grouped into four distinctive clusters; the Veterans, the Freshmen, the Cravens, and the Intellectuals. Each cluster showed clear and specific characteristics that distinguished them from each other. One common feature existed; regarding what risks that were connected with international purchasing. Almost everyone highlighted the loss of control, due to long distances, as being the main risk with international purchasing. The different clusters had diverse suggestions for how to overcome this; the Veterans focused on long-term relationship-building, the Freshmen spread their purchasing activities on multiple suppliers, the Cravens contracted trade companies to take the risk, and the Intellectuals invested in a high level of integration among all actors involved.

Full text“The negative environmental impacts of transportation have gained wide recognition and are at the core of issues of sustainability, especially in urban areas” (Rodrigue, Slack & Comtois, 2001). Many prior researches have been carried out on negative impact of transportation on environment. To minimize and to mitigate environmental concerns, green logistics and green transportation has been introduced in recent time. Logistics companies are becoming more flexible and slowly started moving towards green implementation. Implementation of this new strategy has definite challenges for logistics companies. In order to understand environmental problems caused by freight transportation and its challenges associated with green implementation, the aspect of greenness and its challenges were examined especially on the case of Bring Logistics. In this thesis, various modes of transportation and their environmental problems were discussed, city traffic and its consequences, implementation challenges, use of models, etc
The purpose of this research is to understand environmental problems caused by freight transportation and organisational challenges of green implementation in logistics firms.
To fulfill the purpose of this work, a qualitative research method was used with an inductive approach chosen for methodology. Materials were collected both primary and secondary sources and three types of interview were conducted i.e. face-face interview, interview through email and by phone. Eight interviews were conducted involving seven personalities from Bring Logistics Jönköping, Sweden.
In conclusion, a logistical structural changes were implemented as a model in order for the company to be successful in their green implementation. The problems caused by freight transportation were noise, air pollution and climate change. The challenges of green implementation were identified as financial, employees inflexibility, distribution delay, taxation and fuel pricing.
The purpose of this research is to understand environmental problems caused by freight transportation and organisational challenges of green implementation in logistics firms.

Full textThe management of threats and risks in the company has been dedicated to study these problems by market bias in order to make them better prepared to face these challenges. In this regard a number of analytical tools diagnosed threats and risks as part of the business relations. Among the many relationships that a company established to achieve their goals, we highlight those that are embedded in a system called the supply chain, which as a result of the globalization process has become internationalized. Companies to extend their supply chains "across borders", are subject to the influences of economic, geopolitical, social and historical environment. In these environments, the year 2001 led to a series of risk management studies that have identified the external or exogenous threats, those outside the market bias, the possibility of making the chain of uncertain international supplies. Such threats are configured shares of nature and actions taken by humans, by means of criminal acts as terrorism, trafficking, smuggling and maritime piracy In addition to companies, countries have created international regimes that sought to protect supply chains, especially in its transport system, highlighting the called maritime, because of their heavy use to transport cargo. The thesis aims to propose a risk management protocol for the shipping cargo "less than container load" to make the international supply chain more secure.
