Internet technology has changed this world rapidly in the past decade. The influence of E-business on the economy and business practice has been tremendous. The focus of many companies has been on improving the extended enterprise transactions including Business-to Customer (B2C) and Business-to-Business (B2B). Facing this shift in corporate focus, more and more companies realize the importance of supply chain management in the global E-business environment. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the relationship between supply chain management and E-business, especially from international point of view. The analysis started from the review of supply chain management and E-business, further continued on the strategic impact of E-business on supply chain management and discussed the associate issues during the integration of E-business and supply chain. Finally, some future opportunities will be introduced to illustrate new developments in the E-supply chain environment, especially for small business.

Since the signing of NAFTA in 1993, North American automotive OEMs have moved final assembly and other manufacturing operations from domestic locations to international locations. Mexico provides a relatively inexpensive labor force and is within geographic proximity of the US. Tier One suppliers have also relocated some operations to Mexico, such as American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM) and its Guanajuato Gear & Axle (GGA) facility, where this study was performed. While the proportion of GGA's inbound material sourced in Mexico has increased, this still represents a small fraction of GGA's supply base. Numerous efforts have been made at localization of suppliers to Mexico, both through existing suppliers relocating and the development of Mexico-based suppliers. For the suppliers remaining in the US and Canada, there are numerous possible transportation solutions, including FTL, stacktrain, LTL, and milkruns. The crux of this thesis lies in the hypothesis that GGA would be better able to optimize logistics, if it had the ability to choose mode and frequency on a real time basis after having a more precise understanding of inbound material flow. A case study was then performed on the optimal manner in which to ship empty returnable containers to suppliers, which is established to be per container demand at the supplier site. Then, a model is developed and tested that takes as input the forecast of raw material shipments from GGA's entire supply base and outputs a set of packing lists that minimizes logistics cost while meeting supplier demand for empty containers.
(cont.) The model outputs are tested on a limited basis, but full implementation has not been conducted at the time of writing. Based on preliminary calculations, it is expected that implementation would have a significant impact on GGA logistics expense.

Abstract:

Unibrands is a small company that has implemented a postponement strategy without knowing it. However, they have not implemented completely because they do not know the theories behind it. This report is an attempt to understand and analyze the problems of the implementation of postponement in the supply chain of Unibrands, in terms of examining the theoretical succeeds factors of postponement implementation in the case of Unibrands. The purpose is to determine what type of postponement strategy the supply chain use and what factors can hinder the use of postponement strategy in a SME fashion supply chain by applying an qualitative research approach. The collection of empirical data was through the interview guide approach in which we used meetings and telephone interviews with people representing Unibrands and their contact trading company. The results of this research can be concluded in few perspectives. Unibrands is imple-menting postponement in an improper format, with the results of several gaps in the supply chain related to the success factor in postponement. The request for the fully customization in colors and materials, the bottleneck of relationship developing which is caused by factory manager,  complicated procedures for sample testing, and lack of knowledge of different relationships in the supply chain. Postponement is never perfect, but for Unibrands some problems could very well hinder the efficiency in the supply chain. Solutions are proposed to solve the problems in chain. The proposals suggest re-lationship improvement and information sharing. In addition, culture adaptation by in-volving the right people in the right process.

Returnable Transport Items (RTI) are a critical component of domestic and international trade. The large variability in the geographic supply and demand of goods shipped using RTI impacts the items overall availability at different locations within a network. This research focuses on improving our partner firm's RTI inventory supply in the United States and Canada by developing a one-month-ahead forecasting model to predict the net monthly international flows. To develop the model, six years of historical time series data was decomposed into key elements: level, trend, and seasonality. The results of the decomposition method were used to narrow the forecasting models considered to state space seasonal exponential, SARIMA, state space Holt-Winters, and multivariate regression methods. These four methods were then used to predict the pallet flows using two different approaches. In the first approach, two separate forecasting models were developed, one for the United States-to-Canada flows and the other for the Canada-to-United States flows. The derived Canada-to-United States value was then subtracted from the corresponding United States-to-Canada forecast to calculate the predicted net international movement. In the second approach, we forecasted the net pallet flows between the two countries utilizing only historical values of net international movements. Ultimately, 36 unique models were created using both approaches. The naive forecasting method served as a performance benchmark to the developed models. The performances of the 36 models were then compared using multiplicative and mean composite scores, both of which were based on three accuracy metrics: MAPE, MASE and MAD. Our research found that out of the 36 forecasting models, only seven models outperformed the baseline naive forecasting method. These seven forecasting models were further filtered by qualitative metrics such as ease of implementation and software platform dependence. The state space seasonal exponential model was ultimately recommended due to its superior performances on both the quantitative and qualitative metrics.

Wilmot, Natalie. "Management of language diversity in international supply chain relationships of UK SMEs." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2017. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/16811/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although language has claimed a place in the field of international business studies, the vast majority of research in this area has focused on language management practices in multinational organisations, and has therefore largely ignored the question of how small organisations cope with linguistic diversity in their international supply chain relationships. This doctoral research uses a case study methodology in order to explore language management practices at four British SMEs, aimed at understanding the practices used; the interplay between language practices and power; how practices vary depending on whether they are implemented in upstream or downstream supply chain relationships; and the perspectives of language agents on these issues. My findings highlight a number of issues which have implications for the international management literature. Firstly, I contribute to the literature on language management practices to show the methods used by smaller organisations, including language nodes, lingua francæ, body language, pictorial communication, translators, the extensive use of lean media, and Google Translate. The findings also revealed the unplanned nature of many of the decisions relating to language management practice at SMEs. Rather than having a strategic approach, the organisations had often arrived at their current practices through a process of bricolage, where they redeployed linguistic resources which had originally been acquired for other purposes, highlighting the emergent nature of strategy-making in smaller organisations. Additionally, the extensive use of the English language as a medium of communication in all the organisations studied was noted. However, in contrast to previous research on Business English as a Lingua Franca (BELF), I found that native speakers took ownership of the English language and positioned themselves as arbiters of correct usage, which had implications for how they related to linguistic Others in supply chain relationships of which the language users themselves were not necessarily aware. There was a marked difference found between the practices used between upstream and downstream relationships. The organisations were much more likely to engage in a wider range of practices, and be more accommodating linguistically, for their customers than they were their suppliers. This demonstrates the primacy of the customer relationship in international supply chains, in contrast to recent research which highlights supplier relationships as a source of competitive advantage. Finally, the study shows that small organisations largely focus their energies on language practices which address oral and informal communication with their partners, rather than on formal marketing tools such as websites and flyers. The study uses the lens of skopos theory in order to explore the efficacy of the translation practices which organisations use to translate written communication.

Abstract:
Höganäs AB's current distribution network for iron powder in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region is subject to high costs incurred by large inventories and high cost of capital. As a result of increasing demand and service level requirements from customers, inventories have steadily increased. Keeping a high inventory level has enabled high service levels irrespective of supply disruptions or changes in demand. It is important that the distribution network incorporates a balance between robustness and cost efficiency and not only focuses on one of these aspects. The purpose of this project is to provide Höganäs AB with scientific data on how the distribution network can be improved in terms of lowering the total cost of warehousing and distribution while maintaining or improving customer service. There are several goals for this project. The first goal is to optimize the flow of material in the distribution network given empirical data of customer demand. The intended model is a linear program. The linear program will solve a multi echelon, period, product, location and transportation mode instance of the distribution network design problem. The second goal is to test the robustness of the optimal solutions resulting from the linear program by stochastic simulation. The simulations utilize the optimal network designs generated by the linear program and is done for a set of possible scenarios where key parameters are changed. By adjusting key parameters and measuring the effect on cost and service level, the goal is to evaluate the robustness of each configuration. By keeping the existing nodes of the distribution network and changing the flow of material and distribution strategy, lower inventories can be maintained and service level kept high regardless of demand growth and supply disruption. The optimal distribution network design is one from the linear program, configured with a 14 day inventory level and 10 day reorder point for warehouses. The optimal design shows that distribution is made more robust and efficient by allowing for distribution between warehouses or supplying customers normally affiliated with other warehouses. It also suggests that a central redistribution warehouse is a possible improvement to the current network design.

Globalization in sourcing and manufacturing is expected to offer several different kinds of benefits. Globalized companies can produce products at cheaper costs by accessing cheaper resources and they can be close to the local market, so that they can quickly react to the needs of local markets. However, there are risks involved in global expansion. Different countries have different cultures and environments. Political relationships between the countries and global economic challenges may also affect the reliability and the profitability of globalization. Globalization requires goods to travel longer, which in turn pushes up the logistics costs. Among all the challenges, this thesis focuses on the supply chain challenges of globalization and develops the strategies to address those challenges. The thesis will provide framework to help to make international supply chain decisions. Based on this framework and the current Honeywell's environment, it will identify four different improvement opportunities and associated solutions. Each opportunity will be evaluated by appropriate models. The goal of identifying Honeywell's improvement opportunities and evaluating them is to present some structural results for each supply chain option: how the trade-offs of the option can be optimized and in each case, which option works best. In the last part, the thesis will also discuss the implementation challenges. The organizational challenges will be analyzed by using the three lenses and the change management will be discussed.
(cont.) In addition to the organizational challenges, the communication challenges, which become more important in a global environment, will also be discussed. Although these are the challenges faced during the project at Honeywell, many companies that are trying to do global expansion experience same type of challenges. Thus, this discussion will help to address implementation issues that most companies face.

Carr, Daniel. "The Effectiveness of Collaboration Within Supply Chain Management: A Case Study of Adidas Group." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/2078.

Abstract:
For a multi-national company like Adidas, supply chain management is one of the most crucial aspects of business operations. Products cannot be sold unless Adidas’s supply chain is well-managed and efficient, and public perception of a brand/company is critical to success. This case study analyzes the effectiveness of Adidas's distinct “collaborative approach” to supply chain management, which is characterized by not only monitoring and auditing suppliers, but also training them to make Adidas’s standards their own and approaching suppliers with the intention of building long-term relationships where the suppliers can become self-sufficient. This study reviews the structure of Adidas's supply chain, the nature of Adidas's collaborative approach to supply chain management, the benefits that collaboration provides over the conventional "compliance" approach to supply chain management, and the potential shortcomings of Adidas's approach. A conclusion is reached that the collaborative approach is the backbone of Adidas's success as one of the largest apparel manufacturers in the world because of its holistic nature and consideration for unique cultural challenges.

Xu, Wei. "Optimising supply chain performance via information sharing and coordinated management." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2839.

Full text
Abstract:
Supply chain management has attracted much attention in the last decade. There has been a noticeable shift from a traditional individual organisation-based management to an integrated management across the supply chain network since the end of the last century. The shift contributes to better decision making in the supply chain context, as it is necessary for a company to cooperate with other supply chain members by utilising relevant information such as inventory, demand and resource capacity. In other words, information sharing and coordinated management are essential mechanisms to improve supply chain performance. Supply chains may differ significantly in terms of industry sectors, geographic locations, and firm sizes. This study was based on case studies from small and medium sized manufacturing supply chains in People Republic of China. The study was motivated by the following facts. Firstly, small and medium enterprises have made a big contribution to China’s economic growth. Several studies revealed that most of the Chinese manufacturing enterprises became aware of the importance of supply chain management, but compared to western firms, the supply chain management level of Chinese firms had been lagging behind. Research on supply chain management and performance optimisation in Chinese small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) was very scarce. Secondly, there had been plenty of studies in the literature that focused on two or three level supply chains whilst considering a number of uncertain factors (e.g. customer demand) or a single supply chain performance indicator (e.g. cost). However, the research on multiple stage supply chain systems with multiple uncertainties and multiple objectives based on real industrial cases had been spared and deserved more attention. One reason was due to the lack of reliable industrial data that required an enormous effort to collect the primary data and there was a serious concern about data confidentiality from the industry aspect. This study employed two SME manufacturing companies as case studies. The first one was in the Aluminium industry and another was in the Chemical industry. The aim was to better understand the characteristics of the supply chains in Chinese SMEs through performing in-depth case studies, and built models and tools to evaluate different strategies for improving their supply chain performance. The main contributions of this study included the following aspects. Firstly, this study generalised a supply chain model including a domestic supply chain part and an international supply chain part based on deep case studies with the emphasis on identifying key characteristics in the case supply chains, such as uncertainties, constraints and cost elements in association with flows and activities in the domestic supply chain and the international supply chain. Secondly, two important SCM issues, i.e. the integrated raw material procurement and finished goods production planning, and the international sales planning, were identified. Thirdly, mathematical models were formulated to represent the supply chain model taking into account multiple uncertainties. Fourthly, several operational strategies utilising the concepts of just-in-time, safety-stock/capacity, Kanban, and vendor managed inventory, were evaluated and compared with the case company's original strategy in various scenarios through simulation methods, which enabled quantification of the impact of information sharing on supply chain performance. Fifthly, a single objective genetic algorithm was developed to optimise the integrated raw material ordering and finished goods production decisions under (s, S) policy (a dynamic inventory control policy), which enabled the impact of coordinated management on supply chain performance to be quantified. Finally, a multiple objectives genetic algorithm considering both total supply chain cost and customer service level was developed to optimise the integrated raw material ordering and finished goods production with the international sales plan decisions under (s, S) policy in various scenarios. This also enabled the quantification of the impact of coordinated management on supply chain performances.

The research conducted for this thesis was performed at "Company X", a U.S.-based engineered goods manufacturer. This project focused on Company X's overall manufacturing strategy, with an emphasis on how global expansion of manufacturing can allow the company to achieve greater international sales growth. Company X's current strategy for supplying non-U.S. markets has largely relied on U.S. manufacturing and assembly, followed by exporting of finished goods. Due to a desire to increase international sales and a need to address tariff and non-tariff barriers in certain key markets, Company X must now evaluate opportunities for in-country manufacturing and assembly in its target markets. This project seeks to evaluate the high-level financial and operational risks of expanding Company X's current manufacturing operations through the use of three types of analysis: 1) A single-site cost analysis of material and inventory flow to an international site; 2) A global manufacturing capacity plan to serve regional markets; and, 3) An evaluation of qualitative risk factors affecting potential site selection. The single-site model involves the development of a simplified cost model. This model demonstrates the cost-competitiveness of each supply chain design alternative for serving a single international site, including the sensitivity of the model to changes in key cost drivers. The global model builds on the results of the single-site model and evaluates the opportunities for international sites to serve both in-country and regional demand for the top markets Company X is targeting.
(cont.) The site selection model addresses the operational and socio-political risks associated with investing in operations in new markets. The results of this analysis provide Company X with additional insights into which markets represent the best and lowest-risk opportunities for operational growth in the near future. Recommendations provided in this thesis will be used by Company X to expand and develop their new global manufacturing strategy and to achieve its goal of rapid international sales growth.

This study addresses a medical device company's need to relicense its products for export after declaring a new legal manufacturer. New license applications are approved at an unknown date with increasing probability within a finite time horizon. Approval results in the instantaneous obsolescence, or "sudden-death," of inventory bound for export. As a result, the company needs to re-align its supply chain strategy to avoid stock-outs or inventory obsolescence. This thesis develops a model that aids the organization in assessing the decisions and necessary information that can help navigate the transition. Potential responses include pushing inventory out of the system before obsolescence, or ramping down production in advance of the sudden-death event. Improved estimates of alternative distribution costs, shortage costs, salvage values, and production capacities will greatly aid the organization's ability to respond to the event scenario. Changing these factors suggest different optimal inventory policies. To illustrate this relationship, a dynamic programming model is derived based on a probability distributions for likely license approval times. The resulting model allows the organization to assess optimal inventory policies derived from various system assumptions. In the thesis, different product aggregations are used to assess inventory strategies for bulk-license application submission. Patterns are identified in the analysis of simulation runs, including the time period for starting alternative inventory ramp-up as well as ramp-down speed. The intent of the study is to provide an iterative method for experimenting with assumptions within the organization in order to drive a coordinated response to the sudden-death eVent. The method is intended to be useful to other organizations planning to transition in preparation-for events occurring with increasing likelihood within finite time horizons.

Abstract:
Due to the high competitive nature of the fashion industry, it is essential for businesses to have precise and update information regarding its orders from every part of the supply chain. However, in nowadays conditions, when manufacturing process is outsourced worldwide, but lead times tend always to become shorter complexity of the supply chain has increased significantly that makes very complicated to ensure good visibility, communication, and coordination through the chain. The aim of this thesis is to find the way of managing complexity within Gefa International AB, located in Sweden, by improving its documentation and reorganizing the supply chain. By analyzing the company’s organization three main problems have been identified as: lack of the technical department, presence of intermediaries between the focal firm Gefa and manufacturers, and finally the current modification of the computer system Pisa that does not allow using developed set of documentation in the appropriate way. Two suggested solution should solve these problems and improve performance of the company. First, it is proposed to exclude intermediaries from the supply chain and to add one more work place in the company for the technical assistance. Second, it is necessary to adapt current computer system to the developed set of documentation. These solutions require additional expenses. However, preliminary calculations show that it could be covered by the economies on the middlemen’s interest.

Abstract:

Companies are more and more moving to low wage regions like Eastern Europe and Asia to stay competitive. Instead of lowering the cost of production, it has been argued that a company can stay competitive through making the use of the resources more efficient. In this study the effects a German resource saving concept, involving reorganization towards processes and an Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) module, has on Supply Chain Management (SCM) are investigated. In addition to this a comparison between German best-practice companies and Swedish companies has been done. This comparison was conducted in order to determine the changes needed to be made when taking this German concept to Swedish companies.

The results of this study indicate that through the German resource saving concept major improvements in delivery performance, responsiveness, supply chain costs, and asset management can be achieved. Further, this study has shown that there are very good possibilities for Swedish companies at reaching these improvements successfully. Barriers to a success in Sweden include a lack of managerial commitment and hierarchies as well as outsourced IT departments at Swedish companies. Recommendations to overcome these barriers consist of training key users more thoroughly and stressing the importance of committed managers.

Abstract:
There is a growing interest in examining the characteristics of asymmetry in relationships, specifically between smaller suppliers and larger customers. This study examines how suppliers use information technology (IT) as strategic resources and governance enablers to offset the asymmetry in bargaining power in the international supply chain relationship. Taking a supplier perspective and drawing on resource-based view (RBV) and transaction cost economic (TCE), we propose that two types of IT resources, IT advancement and electronic integration can reap benefits for suppliers with respect to innovativeness and market performance. We argue that this process is mediated by three specific forms of governance, cooperative norm, output control and process control. Moreover, we argue that cultural distance moderates the process of IT-mediated international B2B relationships. Hypotheses are tested using data from 240 Taiwanese supplier-international customer relationships in the electronics industry. Findings help to understand the processes of how IT resources, specifically IT advancement and electronic integration, can help restructure' interorganizatioal governance mechanisms for suppliers in relation with larger customers in the international market and ultimately can enhance suppliers' innovativeness and market performance.

Abstract:
International companies are increasingly taking advantage of the benefits of globalisation such as continuous improvement in transport and communication technologies that in turn lower transportation costs and decrease logistical difficulties. However, the international environment includes business uncertainty in the form of exchange rate volatility as well as political and economic issues. Moreover, ongoing reduction of trade barriers is reversing the previous tendency to integrate business vertically, shifting international business schemes towards outsourcing all except what the company consider its core competence. Supply chain management is a strategic concept that considers the behavioural and political dimensions of conflict and dependence at the purchaser-supplier interface. Nevertheless, there is substantive ambiguity regarding its actual practice. Furthermore, although international purchasers are increasingly becoming more important, the purchasing si de of international trade remains largely ignored in empirical research. This study focuses on understanding the complexity surrounding the commercial relationship between purchasing executives and foreign suppliers. The aim is to investigate what key factors are associated with uncertainty at the cross-national purchaser-supplier interface. Of interest to this research is how purchasing executives deal with those variables. The literature review addresses the discussions of the constructs as it informs the development of hypotheses investigating patterns arising from their interactions. The result was a theoretically driven model addressing the complexity of the purchaser-supplier interface. A survey was conducted to collect data from the membership of a nation-wide professional body of Australian purchasing executives. The richness of the management reality was approached by having recourse to systems theory and the realism paradigm. The model was tested and discussed using structural equation modelling, the supply chain management literature and the responses and comments of the participating purchasing executives buying from over twenty countries. xxii The results include purchasers perceptions regarding five latent variables and their concurrent interactions within the uncertainty surrounding international trade. The factors are culture affinity, the strength of the commercial relationship, quality reliability, ISO 9000 certification and the country of origin effect. Findings indicate that culture affinity is particularly important for purchasing executives and that it is a significant driver of the commercial relationship with foreign suppliers of manufacturing products. Nevertheless, culture affinity does not significantly influence perceptions of quality reliability. In contrast, commitment, cooperation and conflict management have a significant influence when assessing foreign suppliers quality reliability. Trust, traditionally seen as a social aspect of the commercial relationship, was found structurally embedded in the perceptions of quality reliability together with technical dimensions of quality. The commercial relationship between Australi an purchasing executives and foreign suppliers was found to have a high level of maturity. However, the purchasers showed no orientation towards commercial equity, and cooperation was found to be incomplete, overlooking working on cost optimisation. Further, a level of commercial partnership has not been established. It is suggested that a relational approach in the international supply chain is a necessary, but insufficient, condition to progress to the level of commercial partnerships. The study shows that Australian purchasers perceptions regarding ISO 9000 are surrounded by controversy. However, the Standard is still considered a credible quality management system tool that enhances suppliers competitive position. Additionally, the majority of the Australian purchasing companies were not engaged in a low-cost country sourcing strategy. Overall, it can be said that the country of origin effect and ISO 9000 certification did not have a significant influence on quality perceptions within the context of an uncertain international environment. By taking a multivariable and multidisciplinary perspective, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of mature commercial relationships in the international supply chain. The findings provide valuable information that assists organisations to tune or balance the supply management philosophy principles in the uncertainty associated with global trade.

Abstract:

Introduction As the world is becoming increasingly integrated, many firms search for partners overseas with hope to find benefits. Internationalization is today the industrial norm, and in this new and ever-expanding environment, international purchasing has become a major challenge that firms have to face in their daily operations. Yet, despite the growing importance of international purchasing by retailers, previous studies have mainly focused on international purchasing by manufacturing firms, and as the authors have acknowledge the retailers' significance on the national markets, a gap has been identified.

Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to examine and map out the current state of Swedish retailers' international purchasing activities.

Method In order to fulfill the purpose, a quantitative research was chosen. In total, 74 telephone interviews have been conducted, resulting in a response rate of 80 percent. The sample was based on the 120 largest retailers in Sweden, with regards to turnover.

Conclusion Swedish retailers have been grouped into four distinctive clusters; the Veterans, the Freshmen, the Cravens, and the Intellectuals. Each cluster showed clear and specific characteristics that distinguished them from each other. One common feature existed; regarding what risks that were connected with international purchasing. Almost everyone highlighted the loss of control, due to long distances, as being the main risk with international purchasing. The different clusters had diverse suggestions for how to overcome this; the Veterans focused on long-term relationship-building, the Freshmen spread their purchasing activities on multiple suppliers, the Cravens contracted trade companies to take the risk, and the Intellectuals invested in a high level of integration among all actors involved.

Abstract:

The negative environmental impacts of transportation have gained wide recognition and are at the core of issues of sustainability, especially in urban areas (Rodrigue, Slack & Comtois, 2001). Many prior researches have been carried out on negative impact of transportation on environment. To minimize and to mitigate environmental concerns, green logistics and green transportation has been introduced in recent time. Logistics companies are becoming more flexible and slowly started moving towards green implementation. Implementation of this new strategy has definite challenges for logistics companies. In order to understand environmental  problems caused by  freight transportation and its challenges associated with green implementation, the aspect of greenness and its challenges were examined especially on the case of Bring Logistics. In this thesis, various modes of transportation and their environmental problems were discussed, city traffic and its consequences, implementation challenges, use of models, etc

The purpose of this research is to understand environmental problems caused by freight transportation and organisational challenges of green implementation in logistics firms.

To fulfill the purpose of this work, a qualitative research method was used with an inductive approach chosen for methodology. Materials were collected both primary and secondary sources and three types of interview were conducted i.e. face-face interview, interview through email and by phone. Eight interviews were conducted involving seven personalities from Bring Logistics Jönköping, Sweden.

In conclusion, a logistical structural changes were implemented as a model in order for the company to be successful in their green implementation. The problems caused by freight transportation were noise, air pollution and climate change. The challenges of green implementation were identified as financial, employees inflexibility, distribution delay, taxation and fuel pricing.

The purpose of this research is to understand environmental problems caused by freight transportation and organisational challenges of green implementation in logistics firms.

Abstract:
International manufacturing companies are shipping goods worldwide, resulting in interorganizational freight transportation where customers, suppliers, and logistics partners are involved in the transportation processes. This interorganizational nature of freight transport emissions has made them difficult to address, as they can be seen as not being connected to only one single company’s decisions. With the relevancy, consciousness, and interest of going greener being on the rise on a global level, many studies have made a call for a wider perspective on how manufacturing companies can work with reducing Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions from transport related to their business. This thesis addresses that call, and the research purpose of this thesis is to explore how a manufacturing company can achieve continuous and controlled reduction of CO2 emissions from freight transport. This study develops a framework in support of decarbonizing freight transport at a manufacturing company, through the adapting of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) activities, enabled by Strategy and Management Control Systems (MCSs). In sum, it is explored how a manufacturing company can adapt GSCM activities for decarbonization of freight transport as part of a decarbonization strategy, that is implemented and sustained within the company through MCSs. This master thesis studies the case company Rosemount Tank Radar AB, a Sweden-based manufacturer of measurement instrumentation with high levels of export. To find the relevant strategy and management control concepts and theories, a literature study was first conducted. Based on this literature study, a case study of the company was then performed. Following the case study, case findings were analyzed and related to the concepts and theories found in the literature study, leading to the final framework. The framework constitutes the overall conclusion, and a mapping of the analysis on how manufacturing companies can reduce their CO2 emissions from freight transport through the approach based on GSCM, decarbonization strategy, and MCSs. The framework gathers identified decarbonization strategy scopes for greener transports found within the research field of GSCM and the case study. These decarbonization strategy scopes are then set in relation to the identified strategy and control management concepts and tools, that support efficient and tangible implementation of the decarbonization strategy. On a practical level, the framework developed in this thesis is suggested to bring a foundation for discussions among supply chain managers at manufacturing companies that are looking to define or redefine their decarbonization strategy in order make their freight transport greener. As the case study findings of this master thesis also proposes, greener supply chain transport practices can lead to cost savings and better customer experiences, in addition to reducing CO2 emissions.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: The oil industry is experiencing tremendous challenges due to the shifts in global markets and decreasing profits from oil. These challenges have steered companies to select more profitable investments and disregarding different matters of sustainability. However, the oil companies aim to be seen as more sustainable, since the demands of the public and governments increased toward sustainability. Thus, improving sustainability capabilities in the oil industry has become more critical than ever. In this study, the triple bottom line framework is used, which covers the social, environmental, and economical dimensions of sustainability. This study focuses on reactive and proactive practices that can overcome the barriers to achieving sustainability. Furthermore, the focus is on the oil industry’s pursuit of sustainability is facilitated by connecting reactive and proactive practices to improve the sustainability capabilities of a company. Purpose: The purpose of this study is first to identify the barriers to achieving sustainability in the oil industry and understand how companies can overcome these barriers by conducting reactive and proactive practices. Furthermore, the purpose is to understand how reactive and proactive practices can improve companies' capabilities for sustainability performance. Method: This study follows the inductive approach, as the aim was to discover new insights and assumptions from the studied phenomenon. Furthermore, the study is conducted as exploratory and qualitative, in order to provide a rich understanding of the barriers of sustainability within the oil industry, and how reactive and proactive practices can facilitate the capabilities for improving sustainability in companies. For the data collection method, semi-structured interviews were conducted with experts working within a single company that operates in the oil industry. The collected empirical data was analyzed with grounded analysis. Conclusion: With the empirical findings and existing literature, the internal and external barriers to achieving sustainability are identified. Furthermore, the connection with identified barriers and reactive and proactive practices is introduced, as well as how the practices facilitate overcoming these barriers. Also, the study connects reactive and proactive practices that improve sustainability capabilities in companies. The study suggests that practitioners focus on developing a solid foundation of reactive practices, on which to build strategies with proactive practices. Primarily the focus on the oil industry should be in the creation of environmental capabilities, as this potential is disregarded with the current set of practices. Improving triple bottom line dimensions is identified as a win-win process, which argues for the potential of improvement in environmental sustainability would assist in matching the economic and social demands of the oil industry.

Jang, Hyun Mi. "Relationship management in international supply chains involving maritime transport : the role of logistics service quality, relationship quality and switching barriers in creating customer loyalty." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54460/.

Full text
Abstract:
The overarching objective of this thesis is to explore the role of logistics service quality in generating customer loyalty by considering relationship quality and switching barriers in the unique context of maritime transport. This is to fill the gaps revealed in the current understanding of ocean carrier-shipper relationships, particularly the lack of studies attempting to investigate shippers' future intentions to use the same carrier as opposed to the many previous studies which focused on carrier selection criteria or on shippers' satisfaction with the service attributes. Specifically, this research develops a conceptual model in order to determine how and to what extent Logistics Service Quality (LSQ) and Relationship Quality (RQ) towards Customer Loyalty (CL) are related and examine the moderating role of Switching Barriers (SB). By dividing these major concepts into sub-constructs (i.e. LSQ-operational logistics service quality and relational logistics service quality, RQ-satisfaction, trust and commitment, CL-attitudinal loyalty and behavioural loyalty, and SB-switching costs, attractiveness of alternatives and interpersonal relationships), more sophisticated interrelationships are able to be explored. The overall research design adopted in this thesis is as follows. First, the coherent research model representing causal relationships between the key variables is developed on the basis of a literature review and semi-structured interviews with practitioners and academics. Secondly, the main data used is collected through a postal questionnaire survey from 227 freight forwarders doing business with container shipping lines in South Korea. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) is employed in order to rigorously test the validity of the measurement models and examine the extensive set of relationships between the construct variables simultaneously in a holistic manner. The findings of this research demonstrate significant contributions of logistics service quality in predicting customer loyalty through relationship quality in the maritime transport context. The interrelationships between the sub-constructs of these concepts are also confirmed. In addition, difference in the hypothesised relationships is highlighted depending on switching barriers. In conclusion, the thesis extends the body of knowledge in maritime transport, logistics/SCM and relationship marketing particularly in the business-to-business context by suggesting that container shipping lines should develop a high level of logistics service quality and relationship quality and also should utilise switching barriers in order to attain higher (beyond mere satisfaction) levels of shippers' loyalty.

Abstract:
The management of threats and risks in the company has been dedicated to study these problems by market bias in order to make them better prepared to face these challenges. In this regard a number of analytical tools diagnosed threats and risks as part of the business relations. Among the many relationships that a company established to achieve their goals, we highlight those that are embedded in a system called the supply chain, which as a result of the globalization process has become internationalized. Companies to extend their supply chains "across borders", are subject to the influences of economic, geopolitical, social and historical environment. In these environments, the year 2001 led to a series of risk management studies that have identified the external or exogenous threats, those outside the market bias, the possibility of making the chain of uncertain international supplies. Such threats are configured shares of nature and actions taken by humans, by means of criminal acts as terrorism, trafficking, smuggling and maritime piracy In addition to companies, countries have created international regimes that sought to protect supply chains, especially in its transport system, highlighting the called maritime, because of their heavy use to transport cargo. The thesis aims to propose a risk management protocol for the shipping cargo "less than container load" to make the international supply chain more secure. The methodology used was based on descriptive type and documentary because described the operational process and analized documents used in the management of shipping “less than container load”, In conclusion, the multimodal transport operator who is responsible for operating a means of transporting cargo , which makes the supply chain insecure supplies, has conditions , and especially the obligation to join the other actors , in favor of the increase system security.

Abstract:
When companies learned that logistics can be used to achieve strategic goals, it ceased to be perceived only as a source of necessary costs that need to be controlled. In this dissertation the potential benefits of selected sources of long term competitive advantage are questioned. The research in the dissertation focuses on international transport of goods, its employment and organization, and on how logistics capabilities can be employed to increase customer satisfaction and thus the competitive advantage of the entire supply chain. The potential sources of long term competitive advantage are cooperation and information sharing among firms in the international supply chain. The author hypothesised that cooperation and information sharing are positively related to logistics capabilities. Logistics capabilities are hypothesised to be positively related to customer satisfaction. To capture the impact of external environment, the lead time uncertainty and the demand uncertainty have been included in the model. The impact of modern information technologies on supply chain management has not been disregarded and information technologies serve as moderating variable in the model. The proposed model is based on the Transaction costs theory and the Resource-Based View. The qualitative research method of case studies had been selected and used to support the model. The research involves three cases. Interviews with professionals, company sources and secondary data mainly academy journals, supply chain management literature and web pages of selected companies and international institutions provided the foundation for the research. The contribution of this dissertation is in including the impact of the external forces in the model, in focusing on the relationships that a firm has with its supply chain partners, and in an in-depth analysis of relationships among triad of subjects -- buyer, seller and logistics service provider. Also, a new definition of logistics capabilities has been proposed. Examples of real situations of organization of international transportation of goods are presented. Cooperation and information sharing can serve as sources of long term competitive advantage, but their implementation is in many cases limited due to varied reasons. The size of the firm is in some cases one of them, other limitations are named in the text. Suggestions for practitioners are included.

Abstract:
Purpose: This research aims to enhance the current understanding and knowledge of the demand-supply chain management (DSCM) concept by determining its elements, benefits, and requirements, as well as by analyzing key elements of the concept. Methodology: This research has utilized the case study strategy and the survey strategy, however, the case study strategy dominates. The case study research has involved five companies originating from Sweden and the collection of empirical data mainly from in-depth interviews with key persons representing senior and middle management. The survey research targeted the largest firms in Sweden and Finland and empirical data was collected through an online questionnaire. Findings: This research has established that the main elements of DSCM include market orientation, coordination of the demand and supply processes, viewing the demand and supply processes as being equally important, as well as value creation, differentiation, innovativeness, responsiveness, and cost-efficiency in the demand and supply processes. It has also been revealed that the main benefits of DSCM include enhanced competiveness, enhanced demand chain performance, as well as enhanced supply chain performance, while the main requirements of DSCM include organizational competences, company established principles, demand-supply chain collaboration, and information technology support. A key element of DSCM further investigated is differentiation focused supply chain design. It has been shown that these efforts can be organized into a process of five stages. In addition, it is important that this process is addressed in parallel with the new product development (NPD) process, that information is exchanged between them, and that they are directed on the basis of the same segmentation model. Another key element of DSCM further investigated is coordination between NPD and SCM. This research has identified several significant linkages between these management directions, which motivate the use of an integrative NPD process where the NPD functions are aligned with the main supply functions in the company and other sales-related functions supporting the commercialization. A final key element of DSCM further investigated is the significance of regarding the demand processes and the supply processes as being equally important. This research has revealed that logistics outsourcing can be risky, if it results in the supply processes being considered less important. Nevertheless, if senior management regards the outsourced processes as equally important as the in-house processes, the effect of logistics outsourcing on company strategies and direction in SCM could be reduced and logistics outsourcing could instead provide an opportunity to improve the design and differentiation of the supply chain. Research limitations/implications: This research has proposed, described, and further analyzed a demand-supply oriented management approach. Such a management approach stresses that the demand processes and the supply processes have to be coordinated and directed at an overlying level, in order to gain and sustain a competitive advantage in competitive and fragmented markets. This research is mainly explorative in nature, and more empirical data, from similar and other research settings, is needed to further validate the findings. Another limitation of the research is that it is essentially limited to Swedish companies (even if some Finnish companies are involved in the survey), however, many of the case companies have a large international presence and are among the top three in their industries, facts which provide some grounds for generalization. Practical implications: This research provides researchers and practitioners with insights into how to develop a demand-supply oriented business. It shows that companies should organize themselves around understanding how customer value is created and delivered, as well as how these processes and management directions can be coordinated. In order for this to occur, the demand and supply processes must be considered as being equally important and the firm needs to be managed jointly and in a coordinated manner by the demand- and supply-side of the company. It is also important that value creation is considered in both the demand and supply processes. Originality/value: Despite strong arguments from both researchers and practitioners for a demand-supply oriented management approach only a minority of companies appear to have effectively coordinated the demand and supply processes. This might be influenced by the lack of research examining how the demand and supply processes can be coordinated, what benefits can be gained by coordinating them, and what requirements are necessary to succeed. This research contributes by investigating these types of aspects further.

Abstract:
Supply chain integration (SCI) is a phenomenon that has received growing attention from academia and industry practitioners alike. Studies suggest that firms with highly integrated supply chains can positively influence firm performance from both an operational and financial standpoint. The literature emphasizes three distinct dimensions of SCI; internal integration, supplier integration and customer integration. However, the scarcity of highly integrated supply chains could be widespread in South Africa due to the SCI perception gaps prevalent among supply chain practitioners in South Africa. The literature reveals that there are countless inconsistencies pertaining to the interpretation and execution of supply chain management practices among supply chain practitioners, across myriads of industries. This study aimed to investigate the various perceptions of the SCI construct harboured by supply chain practitioners in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturing firms. A generic qualitative research strategy was used as the method of inquiry in this research. Five FMCG manufacturing firms were sampled and a total of fifteen participants were interviewed though semi-structured interviews. The main findings of the study reveal that supply chain practitioners in FMCG manufacturing firms interpret the SCI construct differently. While some supply chain practitioners interpret the SCI construct in line with what is documented in the literature, others have misaligned interpretations of the construct. These differences in interpretation span across all tiers (strategic, tactical and operational) within FMCG manufacturing firms. The findings also reveal that supply chain practitioners in South African FMCG manufacturing firms, to a significant extent, identify with all the supply chain integrative practices relating to supply chain collaboration, intra/inter firm interaction and information sharing, as documented in the literature. The study’s findings contribute to the supply chain discipline by helping researchers as well as supply chain practitioners develop a complete understanding of the SCI construct which deliberately elaborates on the associated SCI dimensions, and explicitly articulates the integrative practices associated with the phenomenon. Managerial implications emanating from this study suggest that supply chain functions should strive to create awareness around the focal firm’s end-to-end supply chain activities, and how these activities impact each other. This can be done through building a culture of frequent inter- and intra- organisational interaction, as well as implementing relevant organisational learning interventions across all tiers within the focal firm. In addition, focal firms should also adopt and leverage off new technologies to ensure more reliable and real-time data, thus enabling more effective decision-making.

Abstract:
In this study, carbon dioxide emissions resulting from transportation are assessed, carbon emission reduction opportunities in the current service supply chain design of Cisco Systems, Inc. are explored. Among these opportunities, changing transport mode from a high-carbon transport mode to a low-carbon transport mode is found to be the most promising option and is scrutinized. The effect of transportation mode change on carbon emission and expected total cost are scrutinized by developing a mathematical model that minimizes expected total cost subject to aggregate fill rate constraint. Furthermore, a second model that minimizes the expected total cost under aggregate expected fill rate and carbon emission constraints is developed. In this model transportation mode choice decisions are integrated into inventory decisions. Since it is difficult to make transportation mode selection for each individual item, the items are clustered and transportation mode selection is made for each cluster. Therefore we propose two clustering methods that are k-means clustering and an adopted ABC analysis. In addition, a greedy algorithm based on second model is developed. Since currently there are no regulations on carbon emissions, in order to examine possible regulation scenarios computational studies are carried out. In these studies, efficient solutions are generated and the most preferred solutions that have less carbon emission and lower total cost among all efficient solutions are examined.
