Abstract:
Banalieva and Dhanaraj argue that digital service multinationals (DSMNCs) possess a new category of firm-specific advantage (FSA), the network advantage, and that, contrary to extant theory, they use networks as a mode of governance. I review the business models used by DSMNCs, compare them to non-digital ones, and explore what we can learn about them from extant IB theory. I conclude that network advantages are not a new category of FSAs, that networks are not a mode of governance, and that their use by DSMNCs is well explained by extant theory.

Abstract:
Social media platforms have the potential to influence destination choice among potential travellers. Before potential travellers embark on a trip, they are faced with decision-making processes on whereto go, what to do, the best time to go, how to get there among other things. These pre-travel planning decisions can be influenced by their expectation of the experiences they will encounter at the destination and based on their perception of the destination. Their perception of destinations isusually informed by information found on social media platforms or passed on by family and friendswho have encountered similar travel experiences. Using Crompton’s model of destination choice set, this study explores the roles of social media platforms on destination choice among international students in the Umea university.

Within the scope of the Spanish legislation, in this article we will develop the regulation about private security on oil rigs. In this sense, it is necessary to give a possible legal responses to this fact, because of the current drawbacks for proper regulation in the European country. It is therefore necessary to provide answers from the different perspectives of law such as the Public, Private International Law, Administrative Law, Commercial Law and Labor Law, International Law which will lead us to determine what should be the role of State.

Abstract:
The world today has successively been shrinking in terms of distance between us as individuals, globalisation and the increased digitalisation of our society have made information accessible and connectivity simpler and more profound. In conjunction with digitalising our lives, a new medium within the digital world has risen to such prominence that it is now a factor of constant influence upon us and our environment, social media. As a consequence, people have to a large extent become digital natives. This has led to firms and brands sensing opportunities within the medium and the utilisation of its different unique vehicles. In combination with practitioners increased interest and utilisation of social media from a business standpoint, business and marketing researchers have conducted increasing amounts of research on the area. Subsequently, the researchers of this paper identified the need for an increased understanding of social media marketing strategies, as further highlighted by other researchers in previous studies on the field of social media marketing. Thus, the purpose to contribute to an increased understanding of social media marketing and how this international medium, with its unique features and possibilities, could be used as a marketing tool by companies in their respective industry and market was formulated.  To provide the profound understanding stated, due to the complex nature of the matter at hand, an abductive approach was used and motivated for. The theories and concepts used for formulation of the questions in the operationalisation, for the semi-structured interviews, was presented from a broad to narrow structure under the literature review. Furthermore, the theories were summarised in the conceptual framework. The following analysis categorised and positioned the informants and their respective firms under four sub-concepts of the main concept of social media marketing strategies. These categorisations laid the foundation for the conclusion of the paper and the answering of the posed research question. The final chapter then concludes by stating the researcher’s recommendations and the presentation of an example of a possible model for the stages of utilising social media to its fullest extent. Finally, limitations and avenues for future research topics are presented and concludes the paper. The paper provides an increased and profound understanding of how four Swedish firms, in different sectors, utilise the same tool for digital marketing. We suggest that all firms active on social media for marketing purposes, should aim to adapt their marketing towards the full utilisation of all its features and possibilities. Furthermore, a process of adapting traditional marketing to the new form of social media marketing, utilising the mediums unique features and possibilities are subsequently discussed. A possible future model to describe this adaptation process are presented and further elaborated upon as one avenue for future research.

Abstract:
The prospective student-athletes’ use of an online recruiting platform to seek college scholarships has become a norm. College coaches recruit prospective-student athletes often using tools like global personal contacts, on-site recruiting, and online recruiting platforms. Online recruiting platforms offer several services and vary in price. This study examines female student-athlete golfers’ use of the online recruiting platform to seek scholarships from a global perspective. Previous research suggests that prospective student-athletes prefer online recruiting platforms while college coaches often use other outlets which can lead to miscommunication and lost opportunities. The services, price, and usability of 20 sports online recruiting platforms in the United States were examined to find out what is offered to prospective-student athletes. Interviews of NCAA Division I collegiate coaches were conducted to examine the most common recruiting tools used by the coaches and their opinions of the use of online recruiting platforms.

Cirannek, Vanessa. "Die Exportplattform als Instrument der ausländischen Marktversorgung." Phd thesis, Universität Potsdam, 2013. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2014/7134/.

Full text
Abstract:
The proximity-concentration trade-off literature explains the choice between international trade and foreign direct investments. In this book, the co-existence of international trade and foreign direct investments is explained by analyzing the choice of export platforms. First, a partial equilibrium model with monopolistic competition, increasing economies of scale, trade costs and fixed costs is developed and enhanced with a heterogeneous, spatial distribution of regions. Second, hypothesis are tested with international trade and production data from the automotive industry.

Danmo, Emil, and Fredrik Kihlström. "Exploring the Prerequisites to Increase Real Estate Market Transparency in Sweden." Thesis, KTH, Fastigheter och byggande, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-264449.

Full text
Abstract:
In the 2018 edition of the JLL Global Real Estate Transparency Index (GRETI), Sweden was ranked the 10th most transparent real estate market in the world, categorized as ‘Highly Transparent’. For the most part, Sweden has held a similar position since the measurements started in 1999. Transparency on a real estate market generally attracts foreign real estate investments and tenants as well as increasing global competitiveness. It also streamlines work processes in many real estate professions through comprehensive real estate market information and comprehensible legal frameworks, transaction processes and methods of monitoring different sustainability metrics. This study explores the prerequisites for Sweden to attain a better position in the index by increasing its degree of real estate market transparency, with the long-term goal in having Sweden reaping more of the benefits in having a highly transparent real estate market. This is done in two ways. First is through a critical analysis of the index’s methodology for assessing if ranks and scores within the different index categories are produced fairly. Secondly, different industry actors are interviewed to identify in what areas Sweden lags behind compared to more transparent markets, in which way they would like to see transparency improved in Sweden and the main barriers in implementing projects that would increase real estate market transparency and ways of overcoming them. An examination of the index methodology shows a changing methodology from year to year, which indicates a steady increase in real estate market transparency in Sweden. Interview findings support a generally positive view on transparency, facilitating decision making for real estate investments, but the level of preferred transparency differs between net sellers and buyers. It is therefore questionable if increasing real estate market transparency would provide significantly increased utility for some market actors with longer investment horizons and market knowledge through extensive business networks. Main suggestions for improving real estate transparency in Sweden include measures for data standards, increasing the level of data disclosure and information platforms for such standardized, disclosed data. The study suggests that the main barriers for implementing this could be conceptualized as a Prisoners’ dilemma and that institutional bodies could act as trustworthy partners in further opening up real estate market information.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the design of a CubeLab Module frame to facilitate biological research aboard the International Space Station (ISS). With the National Laboratory designation of the ISS by the United States Congress the barriers for use of the facility have been lowered for commercial and academic entities, allowing greater volume and diversity in the research that can be done. Researchers in biology and other areas could benefit from development and adoption of a plug-and-play payload containment system for use in the microgravity/space environment of the ISS. This research includes design and analysis of such a system. It also includes production and testing of a prototype. The relevant NASA requirements are documented, and they were considered during the design phase. Results from finite element analyses to predict performance of a proposed design under expected service conditions are reported. Results from functional testing of the prototype are also provided. A discussion of future work needed before the structure outlined in this thesis can become commercially viable is also presented.

Assenza, Victoria. "Organised social networks and the positive resettlement of female forced migrants: A case study of the Scalabrini Women's Platform and Congolese women in Cape Town." Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31509.

Full text
Abstract:
This research assesses the potential of organised social networks to improve the resettlement of female forced migrants in their destination country. It looks more specifically at the impact of the Scalabrini women’s platform on women from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) experience in the city of Cape Town. In the context of the DRC, forced migration includes movements caused by conflict, political instability and economic crises while post-apartheid South Africa offers peace, democracy and a stable economy in the Southern African region, although it is pervaded by a strong xenophobic sentiment towards black African foreigners. In addition to xenophobia and racism that linger in South Africa, women face gender-based inequalities and the barrier of language, placing them in a vulnerable position and exposing them to abuse and isolation. Organised social networks are understood as a source of social capital that improves lifestyle by limiting everyday challenges. Using the theory of embeddedness and immigration (Portes and Sensenbrenner, 1993), the Scalabrini women’s platform offers enforceable trust which provides economic resources in the form of knowledge and networks. Data was gathered through a review of the literature and semi-structured interviews with active members of the platform. This research finds that the creation of a gender-specific network, outside of the community and mainly within immigrants, indeed works towards building enforceable trust with limited negative effects, but challenges remain. It further identifies the link between unemployment and documentation as the main obstacle to women’s positive resettlement. The platform tackles the challenge of unemployment linked to documentation by providing professional skills and contacts. They are powerful tools to avoid the restricted access to formal employment by contributing to capacity-building and increasing chances of self-employment. Organised social networks do contribute to the positive resettlement of Congolese women in Cape Town, but exclusion and isolation remain. The creation of weak ties with the broader South African society appears as essential in response to the xenophobic discourse of the State and the media, especially in the absence of inclusive immigration laws.

Platform companies are changing economy in the digital era. The study of the impact of the international dimension on the strategy used by platform companies to attract users to their platforms aims to clarify the incentives that platform companies use, as well as the difficulties encountered in new countries and the measures they have taken to overcome the Liabilities of Outsidership. The way a platform company encourages its users to join the platform represents, in many cases, the company's success factor. It is not an easy challenge for entrepreneurs to achieve simultaneous user engagement. Since internationalization is a necessary factor for the survival of platforms, the weaknesses found by these companies in foreign markets have gained relevant importance in the literature. In this study, two case studies of digital portuguese platform companies are analyzed. The incentives used by these companies to attract users to their platforms and the way they choose to monetize their activity were considered in this analysis. The results of this study demonstrated that the main strategy used by platforms is the "planting" strategy, in which the platform company designs the platform to attract one group of users, which, after valuing and joining the platform, brings another group of users that want to interact with the first group of users. The international dimension has shown to have no impact on the strategies used in foreign markets, since in the case of these two companies, the "loss-leader" population corresponds to the international population.

Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
UniPlaces is a Portuguese start-up in the online reservation business covering the student housing market, which entered the London market in August 2013. After discussing with UniPlaces, it was possible to verify that their main issue in London is their customer acquisition strategy. Hence, the purpose of this Work Project will be to study and explore how UniPlaces can improve its customer’s acquisition strategy in the London market. An analysis of the market was performed in which it was analyzed what are the external factors that can influence customer acquisition such as the attractiveness of the student accommodation market. Moreover, an internal analysis of the firm was conducted in order to understand the company’s strengths and weaknesses as well as its capabilities. These analyses allowed the formulation of hypotheses that led to conclusions and recommendations that will help UniPlaces improve its customer acquisition strategy. With the aim to optimize the business model, strategies and tactics were defined about how to increase brand awareness, how to improve attractiveness of the website as well as the firm and how to improve performance both on the customer side (quality of service) and on the company side (efficacy and efficiency of internal resources). And afterwards an implementation plan was developed for the next three years.

Abstract:
After decades of growth, it is now crucial to ensure that International environmental law is efficient. This implies, among other things, to guarantee the flexibility and reactiveness of existing instruments. This thesis aims to develop an analysis of the different mechanisms and phenomenon that allow International environmental regimes to adapt to scientific, political and legal evolution. It does so by focusing on a specific case study: the influence of the Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) in the Mediterranean. The IPBES was recently established in order to cope with the inefficiency of current measures for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. By assuming the success of this platform, this thesis will explore the different legal means of influence the IPBES has in the region. In doing so, we will see that the institutionalized expertise of Mediterranean regimes allows for a direct influence of the platform, while norm diffusion in the region allows for an indirect influence. The Mediterranean holds within itself all of the stakes of International environmental law. By focusing on the region, this study hopes to shine light on aspects of International environmental law that are seldom studied

There are few technological cases involving Mozambique in the literature. This study attempted to fill that gap. Do Mozambican technology companies adopt the same positioning, in comparison to those adopted in other countries with different characteristics (social, economic, political and cultural), for example Portugal? A case study about a company’s necessity to adapt its positioning, taking into account the internal and external context was created – the case of the Quatenus platform. On the other hand, since 2010, due to the economic crisis, Portugal has fought against youth unemployment by promoting an entrepreneurship mind-set. This in turn has created thousands of start-ups. Only 10% of these, however, export therefore the government has created a strategy to increase these numbers. It is important to identify the factors that influence these companies to achieve internationalization success (including Mozambique). What factors need to be taken into account in order for companies to succeed in NTBF (New technology-based firms) internationalization? To answer this question this study includes four case studies, one of them being the above mentioned Quatenus platform case, as well as 39 questionnaires filled in by business persons from different Portuguese technological companies. This study contributes also with the author’s auto-ethnographic perspective, who worked in Mozambique for around two years. Additionally, the study contributes to a discussion about Portuguese technology companies that often depend on internationalization to succeed. We confirm the data within the existing literature, highlighting the following NTBF’s internationalization factors: networking, qualified human resources, management capabilities, efficient knowledge creation, proactivity, business localization and the ability to adjust the structure to the constantly evolving external context

Abstract:
The main objectives of this thesis are to explain the emergence of competitive dynamics characterized by a symbiosis between competition and market power and to elucidate how they can be apprehended through the lenses of competition theory. Chapter I investigates the evolution of forms of competition in the United States from 1840 to today. We show that while in some cases market power has translated into hindering competition (and vice versa), in others the two establish a symbiotic relation. Chapter II reviews competition theories and concludes that they do not account for the coexistence of two major stylized facts characteristic of the current hegemonic form of competition: long-run profit rate differentials and strong price competition. Chapter III develops a contribution to competition theory within and between global value chains (GVC). We show that uneven interdependence is the source of intra-GVC market power, which explains long-run profit rate differentials between firms belonging to the same GVC. Then we show how they can be compatible with strong price competition. Chapter IV studies platform capitalism with a focus on “trust-based algorithmic coordination” (TBAC) firms. Building on the case of the ride-hailing firm Uber, we argue that the TBAC firm conjugates vertical market power with strong price competition in a competitive dynamics in which there is a tendency towards monopolization

Abstract:
This thesis consists of four self-contained papers related to the change of market structure and the quality of equity market. In Paper [I] we found, by using of a Flexible Dynamic Component Correlations (FDCC) model, that the creation of a common cross-border stock trading platform has increased the long-run trends in conditional correlations between foreign and domestic stock market returns. In Paper [II] we study whether the creation of a uniform Nordic and Baltic stock trading platform has affected weak-form information efficiency. The results indicate that the stock market consolidations have had a positive effect on the information efficiency and turnover for an average firm. The merger effects are, however, asymmetrically distributed in the sense that relatively large (small) firms located on relatively large (small) markets experience an improved (reduced) information efficiency and turnover. Although the results indicate that changes in the level of investor attention (measured by turnover) may explain part of the changes in information efficiency, they also lend support to the hypothesis that merger effects may partially be driven by changes in the composition of informed versus uninformed investors following a stock. Paper [III] analyzes whether the measured level of trust in different countries can explain bilateral stock market correlations. One finding is that generalized trust among nations is a robust predictor for stock market correlations. Another is that the trust effect is larger for countries which are close to each other. This indicates that distance mitigates the trust effect. Finally, we confirm the effect of trust upon stock market correlations, by using particular trust data (bilateral trust between country A and country B) as an alternative measurement of trust. In Paper [IV] we present the impact of the stock market mergers that took place in the Nordic countries during 2000 – 2007 on the probabilities for stock price jumps, i.e. for relatively extreme price movements. The main finding is that stock market mergers, on average, reduce the likelihood of observing stock price jumps. The effects are asymmetric in the sense that the probability of sudden price jumps is reduced for large and medium size firms whereas the effect is ambiguous for small size firms. The results also indicate that the market risk has been reduced after the stock market consolidations took place.

In December, 2011, the UN General Assembly approved the Resolution 66/137 adopting the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training following the human rights education movement started in 1948 by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in an on-going evolution mainly as of the 90`s. The Declaration is the ratification by the international community of the need of changing paradigm and values which orient the life of individuals in daily basis worldwide and that is responsible for the current state of the human rights. With the adoption of this new international document the process of diffusion and dissemination of its content started aiming at the effectiveness of the right to human rights education. Yet, the Declaration must overcome many structural obstacles for the acceptance of its principles, in especial, the values and traditions of the societies based on the patriarchy and the neoliberal capitalism.

Abstract:
Cloud storage, communication platforms with interactive functions, virtual models that are merged with physical surroundings, computer simulations, life cycle perspective. This is what is being discussed in the corridors of the BIM-world. But if this is the future: why is the implementation so slow, and what exactly is to be implemented?   The process of handling and understanding what BIM is has become too complex, and in this report we want to find solutions for making the way of working intelligible and useful for a wider audience. In collaboration with Vianova Systems, we have investigated what the use of BIM looks like today and what improvements are needed for a wider future implementation in the AEC industry.   Our investigations show that almost 80 % believe that work which utilizes a digital model would be more effective: at the same time the insecurity concerning software and uncertainties regarding the implementation of the work methodologies are limiting factors. As a solution for this a user interface for project management and communication has been developed.   These investigations have been carried out with the aid of a questionnaire and interviews and compiled into two parts: partly this report, as well as an end product of visionairy nature called ”7 visions for the future of BIM”.

Abstract:
Economic utilization of geothermal networks under agricultural surfaces needs large agricultural areas. In order to exploit the cultivated land more effectively, this paper proposes a novel locally vibrating plough system that employs a hydraulic actuator direct on the plough blade instead of the state of the art external vibration units. Starting with a description of geothermal networks under agricultural surfaces and the construction technology in details, the contribution shows different concepts, the development and test of the most promising solution for imprinting local vibrations at the cutting edge with the goal of traction force reduction. A virtual demonstrator, the test rig set-up and the control concepts are described. Both of the closed-loop simulation and experimental position control of the entire vibration system demonstrate that the novel design has impressive performance improvement. Finally, the integration of the vibration system into a prototype tool is shown and the reduction of the traction force is proven by experiments carried out with a tractor on a testing field.

Abstract:
Continuous Curatorial Conversations is a practice-led exploration of conversation, both as a medium and as a tool for capturing supplementary histories of the curatorial. The primary question of this research project is how the medium of conversation can be explored to write supplementary histories of the curatorial which thus far have been omitted from extant publications on the subject. Three important sub questions guide this exploration. First, what is and has been the role of conversation within the curatorial? What are the possibilities and limitations within the medium of conversation? What roles do conviviality and hospitality play within the process of conversation? This thesis reflects upon a series of curated projects that explore the sp/pl/ace for curatorial conversation and also reviews a collection of one-to-one recorded conversations conducted by the author, including conversations with Alfredo Cramerotti, Hedwig Fijen, Mel Gooding, William Furlong and Sarah Lowndes. Sites of fieldwork include: the 54th Venice Biennale; Manifesta 8, The European Biennial of Contemporary Art; and Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2012. Through these projects and related recordings it unpicks the norms and possibilities of what and when one can record on the subject of the curatorial. The hypothesis of this study is that a great deal of curatorial activity is locked up in conversation, yet a disproportion makes it to the pages of the history of the field. Furthermore, in its clean transcribed form it misrepresents the fragility and nuance of the original exchange. The theoretical context of this research looks at Nicolas Bourriaud’s notion of Relational Aesthetics, the writing of Maria Lind and Paul O’Neill, with a focus on Audio Arts. A new methodology relating to curatorial conversation and its recording has therefore been identified as ‘critical conviviality’. The writing relating to Continuous Curatorial Conversations research takes the form of four books. The book ‘An Introduction’ comprises the PhD thesis and sits next to a bespoke online platform www.continuous-curatorial-conversations.org which hosts a selection of audio recordings collated during the research process. The books ‘Continuous’, ‘Curatorial’, and ‘Conversations’ unpack the lineage and context of Alexandra C.M. Ross’s practice and projects conducted during her research and are to be read in no strict order. The new knowledge resulting from this thesis and relating practice is the attention to the subtleties of conversation and its capture as it relates to the instigation, recording and presentation of semi-private matters in semi-public contexts.

Abstract:
This report is the result of a conducted Minor Field Study (MFS), to the greatestextent funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency(SIDA), in an attempt to design a system for evaluating smaller solar power systems indeveloping countries. The study was to the greater part conducted in Nairobi, Kenyain close collaboration with the University of Nairobi. The aim was to develop asystem that would use easily available components and keep the costs to a minimum, yet deliver adequate performance. The system would measure certain parameters of asolar power system and also relevant environmental data in order to evaluate theperformance of the system. Due to the specific competence of the collaboratinggroup at the University of Nairobi, a Kinetis Freescale K64-microcontroller with anARM-Cortex processor was selected as the core of the design. Components wereselected, schematics were drawn, a circuit board was designed and manufactured andsoftware was written. After 12 weeks a somewhat satisfying proof-of-concept wasreached at the end of the field study in Kenya. The project however proved howdifficult it is to go from first idea to a functional proof-of-concept during a limitedtimeframe, and also in an East-African country. The final proof-of-concept was testedat Mpala Research Centre in Kenya and despite containing some flaws proved that itwould indeed be possible to design a working system on the principles discussed inthis report. The system is open-source, so anyone may use and modify it.

In this text, there are several key and specific examples of the transformation of various signifiers (i.e. media-bred fear’s transformation into a political tactic of surveillance, contemporary freneticism’s transformation into complacency, and community’s transformation into nationalism as a state weapon). In this essay, all of these concepts are contextualized within the exponential growth of new technologies. That is to say, all of these semiotic developments must be framed within the post-Internet sphere.

In the last decade, the crowdfunding industry has experienced a boom. Changes in the socio-cultural environment and the financial situation can be considered as the motors of this new paradigm shift. People are finding in this kind of platforms a suitable way to fund their projects and bring value into the market. In the other side, funders are also pleased through the opportunity of helping creators fulfill their dreams and taking part in the creation of innovative services or projects. However, the industry is about to experience a whole new scenario. The rise of equity-based platforms is severely affecting the industry’s status quo, which held reward based platforms as the market leaders. The approval of the American JOBS Act and its potential global impact is centering all players’ attention. Only time will dictate the destiny of the industry and the future funding methods that people will choose to change the world.

With the rapid spread of information networks, the extent of the activeness of the e-commerce is different from the past. This has been as high as 43.5% of Internet users had used overseas shopping (Institute for Information Industry 2013). Some products that are not available in Taiwan or the prices of goods on the Taiwan market are too high, the consumers then acquire the products and goods through surrogate purchasing by relatives or other individuals, or the Yahoo auction platform or BBS HELPBUY website. Today, however, purchasing products and goods by the previous methods has gradually shifting to shopping from domestic and foreign large websites or from domestic surrogate purchasing service websites. Because these websites adjust their web pages for the ease of use and offer convenient payment methods, they have grabbed the customers from home market and abroad. This study is to explore the relationship of the impact of the quality of the Internet surrogate purchasing service websites to the consumer “Perceived Usefulness” and then the impact to the Attitude”, and the consumer continued use of the system. After collecting and analyzing an initial set of samples, it is found that there are significant impacts of the quality to the “Perceived Usefulness”, the “Perceived Usefulness” to the “Attitude”, and the “Attitude” to the continued use of the system. Furthermore, the “Perceived Risk” had negative impact to the “Attitude”. Furthermore, in the formal test, the results are as followed. The system quality has slight significance to the perceived usefulness, the service quality, perceived usefulness to attitude and attitude to continuance intention are having significance impact. And the last results are the perceived risks having negative impact on both continuance intention and attitude.

The fast development of technology and the presence of the internet and smartphones have created a new business opportunity that connects online and offline which is also known as O2O system. An example of this system and, what a lot of people use these days; is online food delivery service platforms. These platforms connect restaurants to consumers. Whenever consumers make an order through the smartphone application, platform sends a notification of the order to the restaurant, which in turn makes food for consumers. A delivery person then picks up the food and delivers the food to consumers. This thesis is going to examine (1) the development of online food delivery service platforms in 4 different countries, Europe (Germany), United States, Korea, and China and see why there is faster development in Asian countries compared to Europe (Germany) or United States by using the theory of international product life cycle and diffusion of innovation. This thesis will also observe (2) the relationship of platforms, either between foreign platforms or between local platforms depending on the entry mode. This thesis will also (3) compare the food delivery fee that vendors charge to consumers by using GDP per capita ppp and other components. This thesis has analyzed that there are different supply and demand situations in which countries such as South Korea and China, have a fast development in online food delivery service platforms. Also, this thesis has observed that most platforms choose to acquire other foreign platform to enter foreign market, and also local platforms choose to acquire other local platforms to be stronger within the local market. Lastly, this thesis has analyzed that consumers have different purchasing power over the food delivery fee in 4 different countries.

As the number of global Internet users increases steeply and their consumption patterns change, the market size of global cross-border E-commerce keeps rising. According to the surveys from AliResearch and Accenture, the market size of global cross-border E-commerce in 2017 was 530 billion US dollars. And this number is predicted to reach 994 billion in 2020, while the number of global consumers will reach 943 million. As the market size grows continuously, a large number of firms seek to expand their businesses to foreign markets actively besides putting efforts into domestic market. Therefore, this study attempts to choose three representative firms and analyze their entry strategies of overseas markets, mainly Asian markets, in recent years. These three firms are from America, Europe and Asia, where the development of global cross-border E-commerce are the most mature and fastest. This study analyzes Alibaba, Amazon, and Otto Group’s internationalization strategies through case study as well as comparative analysis, and gains the following findings: 1. These three firms sought to expand their businesses to broader foreign markets based on the premise that they possess adequately tangible & intangible resources and capabilities. Moreover, besides cross-border E-commerce, all of them expanded their business scopes to other fields and form their own business ecosystem to gain their core competitive advantage. 2. All three firms took more than one type of entry mode as their internationalization strategies in recent years. And basically, they all adopted the strategies they used before and adjusted them based on different target markets’ characteristics. However, the strategies that these firms used to adopt were apparently different. 3. When selecting entry modes, firms have to consider internal and external factors which may affect their performance, for instance, domestic and host country’s policies, organizational characteristics, business strategies, host country locational characteristics etc. However, not every firm will be affected by all those factors. Furthermore, the degree of influence and importance from these factors won’t be the same in different situations. 4. Timing is another important factor that affects a firm’s decision to select entry mode. To achieve its strategic goals, a firm will adopt different entry modes according to different market conditions and competitive situations at different time.

Abstract:
The platform economy is a phenomenon that has emerged accompanied by revolutionary business models, which aim to bring supply and demand closer together. However, besides the solutions that promote quality of life and inclusion, this new reality has brought multiple challenges to the job market. It is precisely in this context that this dissertation aims to make its contribution, with a first global approach being made to the emergence of online platforms and, consequently, the emergence of the gig economy, clarifying some relevant issues at a conceptual level, and considering practical impacts. In this follow-up, the conditions were met in order to carry out a legal analysis on the topic, focused on Labor Law. This analysis has, as its central theme, the difference between the employment and service contract and the atypical employment relationships. However, it is inevitable to conclude that the current legal framework does not respond to all the problems analyzed throughout the present dissertation. Thus, we proceeded to the investigation of several suggestions, which may constitute responses to the digital challenge, that we currently live. The inevitable political choice in the regulation of work, provided through online platforms, will have an incalculable social and economic impact, risking to contribute to the end of these recent business models, or to the implementation of improved models, that allow an immeasurable workforce, to have the possibility of obtaining income, or increase the income already earned, while enjoying working conditions, access to social protection and collective bargaining.
