Full textThe proximity-concentration trade-off literature explains the choice between international trade and foreign direct investments. In this book, the co-existence of international trade and foreign direct investments is explained by analyzing the choice of export platforms. First, a partial equilibrium model with monopolistic competition, increasing economies of scale, trade costs and fixed costs is developed and enhanced with a heterogeneous, spatial distribution of regions. Second, hypothesis are tested with international trade and production data from the automotive industry.

Platform companies are changing economy in the digital era. The study of the impact of the international dimension on the strategy used by platform companies to attract users to their platforms aims to clarify the incentives that platform companies use, as well as the difficulties encountered in new countries and the measures they have taken to overcome the Liabilities of Outsidership. The way a platform company encourages its users to join the platform represents, in many cases, the company's success factor. It is not an easy challenge for entrepreneurs to achieve simultaneous user engagement. Since internationalization is a necessary factor for the survival of platforms, the weaknesses found by these companies in foreign markets have gained relevant importance in the literature. In this study, two case studies of digital portuguese platform companies are analyzed. The incentives used by these companies to attract users to their platforms and the way they choose to monetize their activity were considered in this analysis. The results of this study demonstrated that the main strategy used by platforms is the "planting" strategy, in which the platform company designs the platform to attract one group of users, which, after valuing and joining the platform, brings another group of users that want to interact with the first group of users. The international dimension has shown to have no impact on the strategies used in foreign markets, since in the case of these two companies, the "loss-leader" population corresponds to the international population.

Gonçalves, Carla Alexandra Magalhães. "Internationalization Plan - How can UniPlaces improve its customer acquisition strategy in the London market?" Master's thesis, NSBE - UNL, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/11898.
Full textUniPlaces is a Portuguese start-up in the online reservation business covering the student housing market, which entered the London market in August 2013. After discussing with UniPlaces, it was possible to verify that their main issue in London is their customer acquisition strategy. Hence, the purpose of this Work Project will be to study and explore how UniPlaces can improve its customer’s acquisition strategy in the London market. An analysis of the market was performed in which it was analyzed what are the external factors that can influence customer acquisition such as the attractiveness of the student accommodation market. Moreover, an internal analysis of the firm was conducted in order to understand the company’s strengths and weaknesses as well as its capabilities. These analyses allowed the formulation of hypotheses that led to conclusions and recommendations that will help UniPlaces improve its customer acquisition strategy. With the aim to optimize the business model, strategies and tactics were defined about how to increase brand awareness, how to improve attractiveness of the website as well as the firm and how to improve performance both on the customer side (quality of service) and on the company side (efficacy and efficiency of internal resources). And afterwards an implementation plan was developed for the next three years.

Full textAfter decades of growth, it is now crucial to ensure that International environmental law is efficient. This implies, among other things, to guarantee the flexibility and reactiveness of existing instruments. This thesis aims to develop an analysis of the different mechanisms and phenomenon that allow International environmental regimes to adapt to scientific, political and legal evolution. It does so by focusing on a specific case study: the influence of the Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) in the Mediterranean. The IPBES was recently established in order to cope with the inefficiency of current measures for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. By assuming the success of this platform, this thesis will explore the different legal means of influence the IPBES has in the region. In doing so, we will see that the institutionalized expertise of Mediterranean regimes allows for a direct influence of the platform, while norm diffusion in the region allows for an indirect influence. The Mediterranean holds within itself all of the stakes of International environmental law. By focusing on the region, this study hopes to shine light on aspects of International environmental law that are seldom studied
Sousa, Rafael José Reis de. "A discussion on the Quatenus platform as well as on the internationalization process applied to other technological products."
There are few technological cases involving Mozambique in the literature. This study attempted to fill that gap. Do Mozambican technology companies adopt the same positioning, in comparison to those adopted in other countries with different characteristics (social, economic, political and cultural), for example Portugal? A case study about a company’s necessity to adapt its positioning, taking into account the internal and external context was created – the case of the Quatenus platform. On the other hand, since 2010, due to the economic crisis, Portugal has fought against youth unemployment by promoting an entrepreneurship mind-set. This in turn has created thousands of start-ups. Only 10% of these, however, export therefore the government has created a strategy to increase these numbers. It is important to identify the factors that influence these companies to achieve internationalization success (including Mozambique). What factors need to be taken into account in order for companies to succeed in NTBF (New technology-based firms) internationalization? To answer this question this study includes four case studies, one of them being the above mentioned Quatenus platform case, as well as 39 questionnaires filled in by business persons from different Portuguese technological companies. This study contributes also with the author’s auto-ethnographic perspective, who worked in Mozambique for around two years. Additionally, the study contributes to a discussion about Portuguese technology companies that often depend on internationalization to succeed. We confirm the data within the existing literature, highlighting the following NTBF’s internationalization factors: networking, qualified human resources, management capabilities, efficient knowledge creation, proactivity, business localization and the ability to adjust the structure to the constantly evolving external context

Full textThe main objectives of this thesis are to explain the emergence of competitive dynamics characterized by a symbiosis between competition and market power and to elucidate how they can be apprehended through the lenses of competition theory. Chapter I investigates the evolution of forms of competition in the United States from 1840 to today. We show that while in some cases market power has translated into hindering competition (and vice versa), in others the two establish a symbiotic relation. Chapter II reviews competition theories and concludes that they do not account for the coexistence of two major stylized facts characteristic of the current hegemonic form of competition: long-run profit rate differentials and strong price competition. Chapter III develops a contribution to competition theory within and between global value chains (GVC). We show that uneven interdependence is the source of intra-GVC market power, which explains long-run profit rate differentials between firms belonging to the same GVC. Then we show how they can be compatible with strong price competition. Chapter IV studies platform capitalism with a focus on “trust-based algorithmic coordination” (TBAC) firms. Building on the case of the ride-hailing firm Uber, we argue that the TBAC firm conjugates vertical market power with strong price competition in a competitive dynamics in which there is a tendency towards monopolization

We thus propose a coding scheme based on the Rainbow model and test it in order to analyze the content of two forums of R&D VcoP. We demonstrate that a forum supports asynchronous argumentative activities and thus enhances global collaboration and knowledge sharing among R&D VcoP members. We then propose an enriched model based on the work of Line Dube and tested it to characterize the R&D VcoP studied. We prove that the community configuration has a direct impact on the online dynamic of the community. The Declaration is the ratification by the international community of the need of changing paradigm and values which orient the life of individuals in daily basis worldwide and that is responsible for the current state of the human rights. With the adoption of this new international document the process of diffusion and dissemination of its content started aiming at the effectiveness of the right to human rights education. Yet, the Declaration must overcome many structural obstacles for the acceptance of its principles, in especial, the values and traditions of the societies based on the patriarchy and the neoliberal capitalism.

This is what is being discussed in the corridors of the BIM-world. But if this is the future: why is the implementation so slow, and what exactly is to be implemented? The process of handling and understanding what BIM is has become too complex, and in this report we want to find solutions for making the way of working intelligible and useful for a wider audience. In collaboration with Vianova Systems, we have investigated what the use of BIM looks like today and what improvements are needed for a wider future implementation in the AEC industry. Our investigations show that almost 80 % believe that work which utilizes a digital model would be more effective: at the same time the insecurity concerning software and uncertainties regarding the implementation of the work methodologies are limiting factors. As a solution for this a user interface for project management and communication has been developed. These investigations have been carried out with the aid of a questionnaire and interviews and compiled into two parts: partly this report, as well as an end product of visionairy nature called ”7 visions for the future of BIM”.

In the last decade, the crowdfunding industry has experienced a boom. Changes in the socio-cultural environment and the financial situation can be considered as the motors of this new paradigm shift. People are finding in this kind of platforms a suitable way to fund their projects and bring value into the market. In the other side, funders are also pleased through the opportunity of helping creators fulfill their dreams and taking part in the creation of innovative services or projects. However, the industry is about to experience a whole new scenario. The rise of equity-based platforms is severely affecting the industry’s status quo, which held reward based platforms as the market leaders. The approval of the American JOBS Act and its potential global impact is centering all players’ attention. Only time will dictate the destiny of the industry and the future funding methods that people will choose to change the world.

With the rapid spread of information networks, the extent of the activeness of the e-commerce is different from the past. This has been as high as 43.5% of Internet users had used overseas shopping (Institute for Information Industry 2013). Some products that are not available in Taiwan or the prices of goods on the Taiwan market are too high, the consumers then acquire the products and goods through surrogate purchasing by relatives or other individuals, or the Yahoo auction platform or BBS HELPBUY website. Today, however, purchasing products and goods by the previous methods has gradually shifting to shopping from domestic and foreign large websites or from domestic surrogate purchasing service websites. Because these websites adjust their web pages for the ease of use and offer convenient payment methods, they have grabbed the customers from home market and abroad. This study is to explore the relationship of the impact of the quality of the Internet surrogate purchasing service websites to the consumer “Perceived Usefulness” and then the impact to the Attitude”, and the consumer continued use of the system. After collecting and analyzing an initial set of samples, it is found that there are significant impacts of the quality to the “Perceived Usefulness”, the “Perceived Usefulness” to the “Attitude”, and the “Attitude” to the continued use of the system. Furthermore, the “Perceived Risk” had negative impact to the “Attitude”. Furthermore, in the formal test, the results are as followed. The system quality has slight significance to the perceived usefulness, the service quality, perceived usefulness to attitude and attitude to continuance intention are having significance impact. And the last results are the perceived risks having negative impact on both continuance intention and attitude.

The fast development of technology and the presence of the internet and smartphones have created a new business opportunity that connects online and offline which is also known as O2O system. An example of this system and, what a lot of people use these days; is online food delivery service platforms. These platforms connect restaurants to consumers. Whenever consumers make an order through the smartphone application, platform sends a notification of the order to the restaurant, which in turn makes food for consumers. A delivery person then picks up the food and delivers the food to consumers. This thesis is going to examine (1) the development of online food delivery service platforms in 4 different countries, Europe (Germany), United States, Korea, and China and see why there is faster development in Asian countries compared to Europe (Germany) or United States by using the theory of international product life cycle and diffusion of innovation. This thesis will also observe (2) the relationship of platforms, either between foreign platforms or between local platforms depending on the entry mode. This thesis will also (3) compare the food delivery fee that vendors charge to consumers by using GDP per capita ppp and other components. This thesis has analyzed that there are different supply and demand situations in which countries such as South Korea and China, have a fast development in online food delivery service platforms. Also, this thesis has observed that most platforms choose to acquire other foreign platform to enter foreign market, and also local platforms choose to acquire other local platforms to be stronger within the local market. Lastly, this thesis has analyzed that consumers have different purchasing power over the food delivery fee in 4 different countries.

As the number of global Internet users increases steeply and their consumption patterns change, the market size of global cross-border E-commerce keeps rising. According to the surveys from AliResearch and Accenture, the market size of global cross-border E-commerce in 2017 was 530 billion US dollars. And this number is predicted to reach 994 billion in 2020, while the number of global consumers will reach 943 million. As the market size grows continuously, a large number of firms seek to expand their businesses to foreign markets actively besides putting efforts into domestic market. Therefore, this study attempts to choose three representative firms and analyze their entry strategies of overseas markets, mainly Asian markets, in recent years. These three firms are from America, Europe and Asia, where the development of global cross-border E-commerce are the most mature and fastest. This study analyzes Alibaba, Amazon, and Otto Group’s internationalization strategies through case study as well as comparative analysis, and gains the following findings: 1. These three firms sought to expand their businesses to broader foreign markets based on the premise that they possess adequately tangible & intangible resources and capabilities. Moreover, besides cross-border E-commerce, all of them expanded their business scopes to other fields and form their own business ecosystem to gain their core competitive advantage. 2. All three firms took more than one type of entry mode as their internationalization strategies in recent years. And basically, they all adopted the strategies they used before and adjusted them based on different target markets’ characteristics. However, the strategies that these firms used to adopt were apparently different. 3. When selecting entry modes, firms have to consider internal and external factors which may affect their performance, for instance, domestic and host country’s policies, organizational characteristics, business strategies, host country locational characteristics etc. However, not every firm will be affected by all those factors. Furthermore, the degree of influence and importance from these factors won’t be the same in different situations. 4.
