Abstract:
Religious moderation is part of the 2020-2024 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN). Religious moderation is a form of government effort to counteract violent extremism. This program must be supported by all elements in Indonesia, such as society, government, and interfaith organizations such as the Forum for Religious Harmony (FKUB). The city of Salatiga is a portrait of diversity because of its diversity of cultures and religions. Communication is vital in the organization's center, uniting and integrating all elements to achieve organizational goals. This study aims to determine the communication the Forum for Religious Harmony (FKUB) uses in developing religious moderation in Salatiga City. This study uses a qualitative method with an interpretive approach and data collection techniques using interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of the study show that there are five communications carried out by the Forum for Religious Harmony (FKUB) in developing religious moderation in Salatiga City, namely (1) social services, (2) counseling/socialization, (3) mock studies/work visits, (4) intensive involvement in the activities of other agencies and (5) building religious tourism sites. The obstacles faced by FKUB in developing religious moderation in Salatiga City are (1) the lack of Human Resources (HR) and (2) the lack of budgetary funds provided by the government. This study contributes to developing an interfaith organizational communication model for creating religious harmony in society. ***Moderasi beragama merupakan Rencana Pembangunan Jangka Menengah Nasional (RPJMN) tahun 2020-2024. Abstract:
Extremes in religion are a serious problem when looking at the country's heterogeneity and multiculturalism level. The results of extremes tend to give birth to religiously labeled conflicts, which require religious moderation to be embodied, one of which is through educational channels. Education is considered a path with potential because it is an educational forum for producing a moderate generation of the nation, one of which is Islamic Religious Education. Learning that is an aspect of education can be used as a path to implement religious moderation. Moreover, this study aims to reveal the concept of religious moderation according to M. Quraish Shihab and its application to learning Islamic religious education. This research uses a qualitative approach with the type of research library research. Data collection techniques are documentation and content analysis as analytical techniques. From this study, several findings were found that religious moderation is a middle position (balance) in religion, meaning that it stands between two opposing sides of the extreme, while the purpose of religious moderation is to create a just, consistent, firm, and balanced perspective on both worldly and ukhrawi affairs. Moreover, religious moderation can be applied through learning methods such as discussions, group work, and tourist work.

Abstract:
I provide a narrative of the emergence of an expressly articulated “political science” in the Scottish Enlightenment. Political science was designed by Hume, Smith, and others to advance both a Newtonian method for the study of politics and a politics of moderation whose tasks included a critique of enthusiasm. In this way, political science, moderation, and (anti)enthusiasm were conceptually connected. The emergence of political science, understood in this way, required a number of conceptual changes in a structure of argument shaped largely by Locke. These conceptual changes, in turn, fixed a rhetorical framework for persistent debates over the methodological and political identity of political science, even as ideology literally replaced enthusiasm. These persistent debates reveal the relevance of the history of political science as a forum for remembrance, reflection, and critique.

Abstract:
Online discussion forums engage learners in higher-level thinking, allowing them to explore topics in much greater depth. One such formal online professional discussion platform is the two-year Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) Fellowship offered by the Christian Medical College Ludhiana (CMCL) - FAIMER Regional Institute (CMCL-FRI). In this study, we report the results of a survey conducted among FAIMER fellows after attending online discussions on Simulation-based teaching (SBT) to evaluate their change in knowledge levels on the topic. This was a retrospective analysis of pre-moderation and post-moderation questionnaire responses. The questions/statements were designed to cover the entire range of topics planned to be discussed during the moderation month.: While the median score between the pre-moderation and post-moderation month questionnaires remained the same, the average score showed an increase from 9.5 to 10.37. The number of fellows who scored the maximum possible score of 12 showed a significant increase from 2.94% to 23.33% between the pre-session to the post-moderation month questionnaires (p-value=0.015). The percentage of respondents who answered the questions correctly in the post-moderation month questionnaire showed an increase over the pre-moderation month questionnaire in 10 out of 12 questions, with the increase being highly significant in 2 out of these 10 questions. Attending online ML web discussions leads to an increase in knowledge levels among participants and is an effective way to introduce medical educationists to essential concepts in medical education.

Abstract:
Myanmar is in an important phase of its political transition. The opportunity for substantive federal reform, which is central to peacebuilding and democratisation, is present and being progressed through parallel elite level forums. However, these elite negotiations have serious limitations, as they fail to reach out to citizens, and contribute to polarisation and the perpetuation of extreme views regarding federalism. To address the absence of public deliberation on federalism in Myanmar, we organised five deliberative events based on the Deliberative Polling® methodology. This paper discusses some of the key findings and demonstrates how they can contribute to federal constitutional reform in Myanmar. It shows that when debating fundamental issues relating to identity and national sovereignty, public deliberation has moderation effects even in conflict-ridden deeply divided societies. Indeed, questions that related to the institutions associated with identity and religion had the highest quality of deliberation, opinion change and moderation. These more moderate and considered deliberated perspectives are of great value for dealing with the polarisation issue that Myanmar faces and demonstrate the potential of deliberative democracy tools to supplement and moderate electoral democracy and elite-driven constitutional change processes.

Abstract:
Background: Environmental deterioration is the alarming situation that results from rapid urbanization and development. The rising temperature and climate volatility are accounted for by the massive carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The research on climate-change mitigation is trying to curtail the situations before they become irreversible and unmanageable. This study explores the role of institutions in mitigating climate change by moderating the impact of environmental quality on climate change risk. Methodology: Global data sets have been collected from world big data depositories like the World Economic Forum (WEF), the World Development Indicators (WDI), and the International Country Risk Guide (ICRG). Countries that are listed in WEF were used as the sample of the study. An analysis was based on 114 countries that are based on the availability of data. For estimation, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, change effects, and a Panel Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) model were used for estimating the results. Results: The global assessment indicates that CO2 emissions increase the climate risk, but its impact can be reduced by increasing the quality of institutions. Additionally, an increase in renewable energy consumption and economic growth reduces the climate risk. Implications: It is an instrumental study that empirically investigated the role of institutions in reducing climate risk by moderating CO2 emissions. The results of this study will help policymakers to formulate policies regarding environmental protection.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the origin of the free-flow doctrine, its role in the American mass media coverage of the Third World countries, and in the demand for a New World Information and Communication Order. This dissertation is also intended to serve as an up-date of the development to the call by the Third World, for a New World Information and Communication Order. These goals are accomplished through the application of the weapons of case study, a critical analysis of the United States policy on the mass media, a historical analysis of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's documentary history of the New World Information and Communication Order in Chronological Order 1975-1986, and a comparative analysis of the New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO), and the International Programme for the Development of Communication(IPDC). The principal assumptions made in this dissertation are that the free flow of information which was strongly advocated and staunchly supported by the United States is a misnomer and a calculated attempt to monopolize the freedom of information dissemination. It also tends to be a successful mechanism for the implementation of the principles of the Darwinian Theory of natural selection - the survival of the fittest. This dissertation also assumes that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) does not seem to be the best arena for correcting the ills prevalent in the global information and communication system.

This thesis examines the doctrine of forum non conveniens as follows. First, the preliminary factors for foreign aircraft accident plaintiffs to consider, such as the diminishing deterrents to aircraft accident litigation and requirements for bringing a suit to a U.S. forum, are set forth. Second, the development of the doctrine of forum non conveniens is traced from its origins to the landmark case of Piper Aircraft Co. v. Reyno, 454 U.S. 235 (1981) to present. Finally, after examining various model solutions to the problems raised by the doctrine of forum non conveniens, a new solution is proposed.

Abstract:
The world division into sovereign states encourages persons answerable to the law to usestrategies as they seek to benefit from legislations consistent with their aspirations. These practices are called forum shopping and law shopping. Subjects of law are therefore compared to consumers when the law is reduced to a simple product « marketed » by different national legal orders. These practices take root in the ever growing space the subject of law is given, considering how much mobile they are becoming along with globalization. Consequently, national legal orders are competing against each other with the risk of seeing their most imperative legislation being ousted. Furthermore, world trade of justice fosters the most dishonest maneuvers. Meanwhile, these practices aren’t subjected to any specific regulation. Private international law must find the solutions that would allow control over exercising forum shopping and law shopping in order to reform international litigation and preserve state interests

Saqer, Ali. "The visible power of the transnational capitalist class : the case of the World Economic Forum." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/79438/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the rule-making of 21st century global governance. If offers a critique of existing accounts on the transnational capitalist class (TCC) and the WEF, as a site of this class, that are based on an artificial differentiation between state and market actors. Such artificiality assumes a power relationship that allows market actors to discipline state managers and shape the state’s policy-making along their accepted principles and norms. Thus, the involvement of the state in the WEF’s activities is viewed as a manifestation of this disciplinary power. The thesis argues that the state participates in such activities in response to the imperative of managing capital-labour relations at a global level necessary to reproduce the capitalist social relations of production within its jurisdictions. From an Open Marxist perspective, it argues that the state is a political manifestation of class struggle and an inherent feature of the social relations of capital accumulation. Whilst this indicates that state managers pursue policies that favour the reproduction of the social relations of production, this imperative is not deterministic or a reflection of the disciplinary power of the market. This thesis shows that the argument that the WEF has an influence over the state’s social and economic policy-making is not supported by evidence. It presents a substantial, archive-based, re-assessment of the influence of the WEF’s discourse of international competitiveness over the state. It shows through studying the institutionalisation of competitiveness in the UK how the country has responded selectively to the imperative of state competitiveness. It demonstrates that the engagement of state managers with the discourse of competitiveness is an attempt to secure the circulation of global capital within the economy in order to help reproducing capital accumulation that drives economic growth, employment and living standards.

Tang, Li. "The US - China scientific collaboration, knowledge moderation, and China's rise in nanotechnology." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/41051.

Full text
Abstract:
In the emerging knowledge economy, scientific pursuit in the form of international collaboration has escalated. Studies consistently report that such collaboration, which has been intensifying in the last several decades, is common among not only advanced economies but also in emerging scientific nations such as China, India, and Brazil. The emergence of a "new invisible college" of international knowledge exchange has aroused interest from social scientists and captured the attention of policymakers. Indeed, recognizing its importance as a means of monitoring and exploiting other countries' R&D investment, more and more countries champion and participate in international joint research. International collaboration between the United States (US) and China is particularly interesting. The US has been and will continue to be the leader in scientific development for the foreseeable future. However, as a rising scientific power, China is changing the global landscape of ideas and innovation along with other emerging countries. The growing significance of the US-China relationship and worldwide interest in China's development suggest that the characteristics of the scientific collaboration of these two countries and its associated knowledge dissemination across national borders are timely topics to study. Surprisingly, few studies have examined research collaboration between a scientific superpower and an emerging scientific power, particularly in the context of emerging state-of-the-art technology. This dissertation seeks to address this research gap by examining patterns of collaboration in the US-China scientific community and its impact on China's rapid knowledge accumulation in nanotechnology, if any, through Chinese knowledge moderators (CKMs)--Chinese scholars who bridge two otherwise distant scientific communities through intensive collaboration with both sides. The research focuses on the following three aspects: firstly, built upon the notions of the boundary spanner and the structural hole, the study develops the concept of Chinese knowledge moderators and uses it as an instrument to examine the relationship between international collaboration and knowledge spillover across national boundaries. Secondly, it operationalizes and tests the impact of US-China collaboration using multiple methods. In addition to citation-based indicators, based on the turnover of nanotechnology keywords, the study investigates the impact of collaborating with US scholars on CKMs' research trajectory and the international knowledge spillover facilitated by CKMs. Thirdly, utilizing a longitudinal publication dataset of 77 CKMs and their CV data, this study is able to quantify the dynamic impact of US collaboration on the quality of CKMs' research over time. The combination of bibliometric analyses, empirical testing, and case studies allows for the development of a comprehensive blueprint of US-China scientific collaboration in the field of nanotechnology. This research yields several significant findings. First, the evolution of US-China collaboration in nanotechnology has gone beyond quantitative growth, as qualitative and structural changes have begun to take place. Secondly, CKMs play a critical role in fostering China's nanotechnology development, manifested in both knowledge creation and knowledge diffusion. The present study also reveals that US-China collaboration has a diminishing effect over time on the research quality of CKMs at level of individual papers, but as pertaining to entire journals. Thirdly, the case studies on the evolution of research streams suggest that US-China collaboration influences the research trajectory of CKMs, who, as the conduits of knowledge, further disseminate it within the national boundaries of China. The research also has policy implications for both sides. Chinese policy makers need to strengthen the mechanisms that encourage CKMs collaborating with the US, and, in order to amplify international knowledge spillover, these mechanisms should further encourage more interactions between CKMs and their Chinese domestic colleagues. From the US American perspective, given China's scientific emergence in nanotechnology, the US should direct its efforts to ensuring its ample access to exploiting the heavy R&D investment of this emerging scientific powerhouse by collaborating with top Chinese scientists.

AbstractIn this chapter I investigate the developer’s moderation of Overwatch by analyzing the game’s official Blizzard forum discussions (2016–2019). The moderation put in place by Blizzard allows players to address, for instance, toxicity by reporting or avoiding players, while also rewarding positive play experiences. By analyzing the player discourse around these moderation systems, the data gathered yields a rift between casual and competitive players, resulting in conflicts in what players might expect and want from their play experiences. I conclude that varying expectations and standards of play feed into a community’s conflicts alongside the failure of moderation in curtailing unwanted behaviors.

Abstract:
Through a metaverse hosted art show we use novel mechanisms to control access to content in virtual spaces. In these spaces where anonymity is the standard, and requiring interaction is secondary to being viewed or received, we explore unique means of service deployment by requiring viewers to create “content” in the form of survey responses and other interactions prior to accessing the show’s content. To strengthen the connection to the virtual space we offer POAP’s to participants to add a layer of accountability and a way of monitoring attendance and interaction on the blockchain. Content moderation is only part of the picture, community moderation viewed as a holistic space is central to evolving sustainable groups which can grow and thrive. Successful meta-worlds still require the translation of real world social practices and constructs to their virtual systems -- not necessarily in the same way they are used in real life, but perhaps in innovative and authentic ways that improve on current practice. The metaverse in its infancy is a perfect place to make large changes to social structures before they are cemented in place. The focus of this research is to explore new ways to provide inclusive education opportunities, invest in the democratization of virtual spaces, and to promote computer skills and literacy. In many current forms, metaverses are inherently non-inclusive because of economic and technological inequality as well as lack of access to Computer Science education resources. We look to disincentivize predatory practices in UX/UI design and service blueprinting, such as dark patterning that subtly create non-inclusive structures. Designing inclusion into a framework implies that a framework or service is inherently non-inclusive. This project challenges this view, and suggests instead that a virtual service should be inherently inclusive, and must be designed in such a way that it avoids the addition of non-inclusive features.

Abstract:
We conducted a systematic study on neutronic characteristics of Tc-99 transmutation in pressurized water reactor (PWR) in this paper. We divided the core into three zones. The U-235 enrichment is 1.8%, 2.4% and 3.1% respectively. The loading patterns of Tc-99 include homogeneous loading and heterogeneous loading. In the homogeneous pattern, the mass fraction of Tc-99 raises from 0 to 2% stepped by 0.25%. The calculation result shows that the keff of the core decreases significantly when the Tc-99 mass fraction reaches 2%. In the practical situation, the Tc-99 mass should not exceed 2% in a homogeneous pattern. We choose the Tc-99 coating of fuel pellet as the transmutation rod form in the heterogeneous pattern, which can reduce the self-shielding effects. There are 44 transmutation rods per assembly, replacing part of fuel rods directly. We evaluate the effect of the arrangement of transmutation rods on the characteristic values such as keff and neutron spectrum of the core. In both homogeneous and heterogeneous patterns, the assembly flux near the outer edge of the core has an increasing trend. Our further study shows that much more epithermal neutrons and fast neutrons enter the reflecting layer and bounce back to the core again after moderation and reflection.

Abstract:
This paper provides an overview and assessment of reform initiatives, both those currently on the table and those that are not but should be. The intent is to clarify the logic behind these proposals and assess them from a Latin American perspective. For each core initiative examined in this paper, whether currently on the table or proposed for consideration, the authors first identify which of the main distortions, identified in the companion paper, it addresses. The overall conclusion is that the current approach to reforming the international financial architecture is not appropriate for the task and a paradigm shift is required. This paper was presented at the Tenth International Forum on Latin American Perspectives in Paris, November 25-26, 1999.

Abstract:
The Global Green Growth Forum (3GF) was initiated in 2011 with the aim of supporting a global transition to inclusive green growth through global alliance making and the promotion of public-private partnerships. This forum is a unique platform to catalyze partnerships that can rapidly bring to scale green growth opportunities bringing together governments from developed, developing and emerging economies along with the private sector. Realizing the potentials of green growth requires the effective mobilization at scale of financial, technological and human capital. This will only be possible if governments and the private sector collaborate at the local, national and the international levels to overcome barriers, and create the right incentives for actors to innovate and invest. This document is oriented towards stimulating the discussions, commitments and partnership building between governments and the private sector at the Forum. The commitments and insights derived from this first regional 3GF meeting will both benefit the LAC region and feed into the global 3GF meeting in Copenhagen on October 21-22, 2013.

Abstract:
Although many people now have access to more accumulated information than has ever been the case in human existence, we also now face a moment when the proliferation of misinformation, or false or inaccurate information, poses major challenges. In response to these challenges and to build collaboration across disciplines and expertise and a more effective community of learning and practice, the Rita Allen Foundation partnered with RTI International and the Aspen Institute along with Craig Newmark Philanthropies, Democracy Fund, and Burroughs Wellcome Fund to hold the Misinformation Solutions Forum in October 2018 at the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC. This forum brought together academic researchers, technology professionals, data scientists, journalists, educators, community leaders, funders and a set of graduate student fellows to explore promising ideas for curbing the spread of misinformation. We issued an open call for ideas to be featured in the forum that sought interventions focused on reducing behaviors that lead to the spread of misinformation or encouraging behaviors that can lead to the minimization of its influence. Interventions with technological, educational, and/or community-based components were encouraged, as were projects involving science communication, public health and diverse populations. A panel of expert judges assessed submissions through a blind review process; judges included representatives from the Rita Allen Foundation, as well as external institutions such as the Democracy Fund, the National Institutes of Health, the Poynter Institute, First Draft, and academic institutions. Authors developed the essays presented here based on both original submissions and the iterative collaboration process that ensued.
