Abstract:
International Film Festivals act as important sites for the exhibition of contemporary world cinema. Film festivals represent an increasingly transnational film culture, where audiences, filmmakers, distributors, press, critics and academics come together from all over the world to discover new films, network with one another and debate about the past, present and future of cinema. This research project investigates the role that international film festivals play within the wider international film industry, with a specific focus on emerging women filmmakers. It therefore explores the arena of contemporary women.s cinema at its intersection with the international film festival industry. The significance and original contribution of the research is its intervention in the growing field of film festival studies through a specific investigation of how international film festivals support emerging women filmmakers. The positioning of the research at the intersection of feminist film theory and festival research within the broader context of transnational cinema allows the examination of each festival, the attending filmmakers and their films to be addressed within a more refined and nuanced lens. A core method for the thesis is the close textual analysis of particular emerging women filmmakers. films which are screened at the respective festivals. The research also utilises the qualitative research strategies of the case study and the interview to ¡°seek to understand the context or setting of the participants through visiting this context and gathering information personally¡± (Creswell 2003, 9). The textual analysis is used in dialogue with the interviews and the participant observational data gathering to provide a related context for understanding these films and their cultural meanings, both personally for the filmmaker and transnationally across the festival circuit. The focus of the case studies is the Brisbane International Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Toronto International Film Festival. These three festivals were chosen for their distinct geographical locations in the Asia Pacific, Europe and North America, as well as for their varying size and influence on the international film festival circuit. Specifically, I investigate the reasons behind why the organisers of a particular festival have chosen a certain woman.s film, how it is then packaged or displayed within the programme, and how all of this impacts on the filmmaker herself. The focus of my research is to investigate film festivals and their .real-life. applications and benefits for the filmmakers being supported, both through the exhibition of their films and through their attendance as festival guests. The research finds that the current generation of emerging women filmmakers has varying levels of experience and success at negotiating the international film festival circuit. Each of the three festivals examined include and promote the films of emerging women filmmakers through a range of strategies, such as specific programming strands dedicated to showcasing emerging talent, financial support through festival funds, providing visibility within the programme, exposure to international audiences and networking opportunities with industry professionals and other filmmakers. Furthermore, the films produced by the emerging women filmmakers revealed a strong focus on women.s perspectives and experiences, which were explored through the interweaving of particular aesthetic and cinematographic conventions.

Attala, Jennifer. "Performing the Festival : a study of the Edinburgh International Festival in the twenty-first century." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3839/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the global marketplace of the twenty-first century a proliferation of festivals, or festivalisation, has produced an increasingly pressurised and politicized environment for international arts festivals. Through a case study of the Edinburgh International Festival the thesis explores what strategies the Festival is adopting to maintain its lead position in this increasingly competitive international landscape. It examines recent cultural policy development in Scotland and the UK exploring how creative industry theory promotes the argument for ‘investment’ in cultural festivals as economic drivers and city or region profile boosters. Edinburgh’s cultural policy is to brand itself the Festival City and it has supported the establishment of a number of competing festivals in the city. The case study investigates how the Edinburgh International Festival is managing a range of new initiatives at a time of rapid political change in Scotland. These include: exploiting changing technology to assist marketing and audience development; establishing partnerships and collaborations with a growing range of non-cultural public and private bodies, and cultural diplomacy – the development of international initiatives on behalf of the Scottish and UK Governments. The case study also explores a unique model of co-opetition which has developed between the Edinburgh International Festival and rival festivals, producing new strategic cultural organizations. The thesis establishes how current cultural policies in Scotland and the UK require international arts festivals to engage in non-cultural roles in order to create profile and advantage for themselves and their stakeholders in addition to fulfilling their cultural remit and in an environment of dwindling public and private sector support. In conclusion, it considers the opportunities and risks for arts organizations of an instrumental approach to cultural policy.

Lee, Toby Kim. "Public Culture and Cultural Citizenship at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival." Thesis, Harvard University, 2013. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:11165.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the relationship between state, citizen and public culture through an ethnographic and historical examination of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in northern Greece. In the two-year period leading up to and following its fiftieth anniversary in 2009, the festival was caught up in the larger economic, political and social crises that have overtaken Greece in the last five years - a painful period of rapid transformation and neoliberalization for one of Europe's staunchest social-welfare states. As the Greek state faces bankruptcy - both economic and political - it is being forced to revisit the terms of its social contract with its citizens. In a country where "culture" was once touted as a national "heavy industry," the relationship between the state and cultural production is also being restructured. Public culture is one of the areas of social life in which people are now struggling with these changes and attempting to redefine what it means to be a citizen of the Greek state - utilizing and revising local, national and transnational identities in the process.

Abstract:

Eales, Alison Caroline. "Bunting and blues : a critical history of Glasgow International Jazz Festival, 1987-2015." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2017. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8026/.

Full text
Abstract:
Glasgow International Jazz Festival first took place in 1987 and has run every year since, making it the city's longest-running cultural event. One of the company's stated aims at its inception was to 'establish [Glasgow] as a major European jazz centre' (Williams, 1986b). Through a single, historical case study, the thesis attempts first to ascertain the extent to which this aim has been achieved, and second to determine the enabling and limiting factors acting upon the Festival in its attempts to effect change in its host city. The thesis finds that urban music festivals can, under the right circumstances, contribute to positive and lasting changes to the environment in which they exist. In the case of Glasgow Jazz Festival, this is evident in terms of both the physical infrastructure and educational opportunities which would be unlikely to exist today had the Festival not been their champion. A festival's ability to effect such change, however, can be severely curtailed by fluctuating levels of commitment from local and national authorities.

Abstract:

Umeå is a city that is known for its music scene. Credible bands and artists have consequently sprung out and put the city on the map for as long the authors of this paper can remember. The city has a specific image and this study seeks to shine a light on how this came to be. Has there been a conscious marketing strategy in order to gain the reputation that Umeå has, or is the city’s music scene so prominent that it speaks for itself? Data for the study were collected through conducting qualitative interviews with the producers of the two music festivals Umeå Open and Umeå International Jazz Festival. The results show that cultural visions and marketing are constantly interacting, but to the authors’ knowledge, no conscious decisions have previously been taken to market Umeå as a city of music. Still, with current acts like Deportees, David Sandström and Frida Hyvönen just to mention a few, the image of Umeå is more justified than ever.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis deals with international festivals 'and the ways in which they are organised and delivered in their host communities. By taking two case studies, the fmx•Festival de Mexico 2010 (fmx) and the Festival Internacional de Teatro de la Habana 2011 (FITH), I propose to analyse festivals in the light of local, national and transnational forces and show how these forces and the agendas that attend them become visible in festival practices. I argue that those agendas unfold and materialise at festivals through strategically employed symbols, content programming and particular uses of space. My objective is to uncover the ways in which local, national and transnational forces operate, embody artistic trajectories and structure social relationships. The dissertation works from the global to the national and the local and includes the hybrid processes and outcomes resulting from the realisation of the FITH and the fmx. The theoretical approach is eclectic, drawing from fields such as performance studies, cultural geography, sociology, psychology, anthropology and tourism studies. The combination of theories allows me to propose the term 'festivalscapes' as a tool to explore the materialisation of the various agendas at international festivals. I approach both festivals as multi-layered events that unfold in a dynamic relationship with social and political forces that are manifested in particular spatial, visual, organisational and symbolic elements at each event.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the growing academic attention to film festivals, there has been little critical discourse about such events staged outside the West. This thesis aims to address this gap by providing a social, political and cultural exploration of the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) in South Korea between 1996 and 2005. The thesis utilises empirical research to reveal how the festival staked out a unique and influential position within a rapidly changing global landscape. Particular attention is paid to the organisersors' use of an Asian regionalisation strategy to promote the festival locally and globally. This study claims that PIFF has gone further than any other film festival in constructing a regional identity and maintaining a strong and mutually beneficial link to its national film industry. Research into PIFF's special relationship with both the national and regional film industries uncovers the previously unexplored roles that film festivals play in film production, in addition to their traditional functions of exhibition and distribution. To place this analysis in context, the thesis examines the politico-economic factors that influenced the establishment of the festival, its programming, the project market (the Pusan Promotion Plan), and its tenth anniversary in 2005. The study argues that analysis of PIFF reveals tensions and negotiations between the "national" and the "transnational" in the wake of economic and cultural globalisation in East Asia. The thesis serves as a case study of how contemporary film festivals adjust their roles and identities to adapt to local, regional and global change.

Abstract:
The Theatre of Nations - Théâtre des Nations - was the unique place of confrontation of international theatrical, lyric and choreographic creations from 1957 till 1968. The biggest festival of theatre in the world concentrated forces able to perpetuate the values of theatre and to change the structures of theatre directory in depth. After the traumatism of World War II, this Festival contributed to launch in Europe a will of opening to the world. By welcoming authors challenging their visions on the Parisian stages, it confirmed the actuality of an international community of theatre. Barely known at the time, most of these authors are today the grand masters of the XXth and XXIst century. By receiving also revolutionary creators, the festival blew a wind of youth and freedom forecasting May 68 events. The analysis of previous similar attempts helps to understand the context of its emergence and the definition of its three missions which allowed exploring in eleven years an endless field of culture for the benefit of the professionals, the artists and the audience: the discovery of the major traditions coming from four continents, the research of new forms of scenic arts, and the consecration of the most prestigious theatre companies. A sociological and historical approach helps also to analyze this phenomenon which was involved in the biggest questions of its time, among them the after war resumption of political and diplomatic relationships, and the recognition of the rights of artists born in totalitarian countries or ancient colonies. The most international of all international festivals remains what it always was, a challenge to the world

Lockitch, Glenn. "How is the jurisdictional challenge for protesters reflected in their practice? As evidenced through photojournalism on land vs in international water demonstrations." Thesis, Griffith University, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/393198.

Full text
Abstract:
As a participatory action researcher, revealing from behind the scenes what is usually hidden, this project aims to research the performative aspects of protest, the use of security forces by governments to control demonstrators and the role of media in two differing jurisdictional environments, on land and in international waters. As a photojournalist (see Chapter 2.3) I also bear witness by documenting and disseminating the unfolding news and historic events. Ultimately this project also aims to broaden the knowledge base and understanding of protest theory, of which there is minimal (if any) research of this kind. Photographing protests since 1991 on land and since 2009, previous to this project, having photographed protests twice in the Southern Ocean in international waters, I noticed observable differences in these differing jurisdictional protests’ preparation, contestation and outcome. This project therefore seeks to investigate the differences in these two protest scenarios. In doing so, this project aims to explore ways in which these contrasting jurisdictional sites may alter the performative nature of the protests themselves and the challenges for the protesters within national boundaries at the 2014 G20 summit in Brisbane, Australia, and those experienced outside national boundaries in international waters in the Southern Ocean, Antarctica, on a Sea Shepherd ship during their 2016/17 Operation Nemesis Antarctic anti-whaling campaign. Security forces are utilised by governments to manage and control protests and protesters as a result interact directly with these agencies, which this project also seeks to document on land and in international waters. The media is an effective tool that governments and protesters use to propagate their individual messages about imminent and unfolding protests. The role and influence that the media itself plays in reporting on protest can have the effect of either supporting or undermining a protest scenario. This research aims to investigate the role of media in these two contrasting protest jurisdictions. To research these two jurisdictional protest situations, in the tradition of a participatory action researcher, I camped with protesters at Musgrave Park in Brisbane during the 2014 G20 Summit and documented their protests and then in 2016/17 I sailed for three months into Antarctic waters on the Sea Shepherd ship the M/V Steve Irwin as a ship photographer. The intimate daily contact of both of these events gave me rare intimate photojournalism access. For both of these differing jurisdictional protests I was able to disseminate my photos through the traditional mainstream media as well as social media. My research investigation also unexpectedly found that the current dominant definition of ‘public space’ as being physically staked out is limiting and that the constantly fluid political and legal environment makes it difficult to pinpoint a clear definition for ‘public space’. Finally, my findings also pose the possibility of further research to be explored in this area due to the lack of past investigation and the complexity of the issues at hand.

Williams, Karen. "Key success factors in managing the visitor experience at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival / Williams K." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/7611.

Full text
Abstract:
The event tourism industry is one of the fastest growing tourism industries worldwide. One type of event that is growing immensely is festivals, especially music festivals such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. As a result of the fast growing pace of festivals, it has become crucial for a festival to sustain itself in the market place to stay competitive. The Cape Town International Jazz Festival (the Jazz Festival) is a fast growing music festival and hosts numerous well–known local and international jazz artists, as well as young up–and–coming artists. For this exciting Jazz Festival to keep growing, it needs to be sustainable. To achieve this, the organisers and managers of the Jazz Festival need to know what is important to the visitors of the Jazz Festival, so they can fulfil their needs. This in turn leads to satisfied visitors that will return to the Jazz Festival and keep the festival sustainable. Generally speaking, music festivals have a more professional management approach than other tourism events and thus are more likely to be more successful. Key Success Factors (KSFs) are a precondition for the success of any event and will influence the competitiveness of the event in the market place. It is imperative for organisers to identify the KSFs that are important to the visitors so as to provide them with a satisfactory experience. This will also assist in measuring the achievement of the event’s goals and objectives. The main purpose of this study was to determine the KSFs in managing the visitor experience at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. To reach this goal, the study is divided into two articles. Research for both articles was conducted at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival through distributing 400 questionnaires randomly throughout the two days of the festival, which was held on 3 and 4 April 2010. Article 1 is titled: “Key aspects for efficient and effective management of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival: a visitor’s perspective”. The main purpose of this article was to identify the Key Success Factors in managing the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, to determine what visitors deemed as important when attending the Jazz Festival. A factor analysis was done to achieve this goal. Results indicated that Hospitality Factors, Quality Venues, Information Dissemination, Marketing and Sales, and Value and Quality are the KSFs that are of importance when managing the Jazz Festival. The results of this article provided festival managers with valuable information when organising an event such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. Article 2 is titled: “The importance of different Key Success Factors to different target markets of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival based on travel motives”. The main purpose of this article was to determine whether different target markets that are visiting the Jazz Festival, deemed different KSFs as important, depending on their travel motives. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was done to determine if there were statistically significant differences between the three clusters and the KSFs that they deemed important. Results showed that the three clusters, namely, Escapists, Culture Seekers and Jazz Lovers, deemed different KSFs as important when they are visiting the Jazz Festival. The results of this article gave festival organisers and marketing managers insight as to which markets to focus scarce marketing resources on and which markets to keep growing, as they will sustain the festival in the long term. Therefore, this research revealed the KSFs that are of utmost importance when managing the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, and that these aspects differ for certain markets. Organisers therefore need to assess the KSFs to provide products that will satisfy the visitor in order for him/her to return each year and keep the festival competitive and sustainable.

In the phase of economic boom, the local government, Miaoli County, in an attempt to carve itself the trendy cachet of globalization and internationalism had drawn up several mar-keting strategies to elevate the level of local cultural industry. Miaoli County, therefore, held two consecutive years of Miaoli International Music Festival in 1997 and 1998 with grand privileges by inviting two of the three well-known, and distinguished tenors- Jose Carreras, and Placido to be the highlights, representing not merely an increasing literacy of cultural aesthetics but a turning point of economic policy. Traditionally, Miaoli County is agriculture-oriented, and is primarily made up of Hakka ethnic groups, accounting for the county's 67% populations. Also, Miaoli County is featured with cherished heritages-Wenliang Gong Qian, and residents are blessed with conventional perspectives duo to the isolation in geographical terms. However, in response to the trend of globalization, the local government aims at transforming this once-remote town into a place where traditions can cooperate with international activities. This case study, from the formation of the cultural policy of the Miaoli County Government, the local culture with international standards, to the marketing strategy, shows that Miaoli In-ternational Music Festival is held effectively, in a sense of participation by local residents. To sum up, to understand the case from the formation of policy, the effectiveness and results of the implementation process, and to develop local cultural policy reference for government departments are undoubtedly necessary.

First of all, the study uses other researches to summarize several representative cases of foreign and local international festivals. Find out the adoptable modes in those cases to offer referable aspects to those places which host an international festival in Taiwan in the future. Furthermore, use 2006 International Yunlin Puppet Theater Festival as the case of the thesis. The thesis uses field surveys including attendance for observation, questionnaire investigation and in-depth interviews to recover the deficiencies in other researches. Besides, integrate and test those information by qualitative research and quantitative statistics. At last, using SWOT strategic analysis to combine the advantages and deficiencies of foreign and local international festivals and the results of the study about the International Yunlin Puppet Theater Festival and summarize the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the international festivals in Taiwan. What is more, based on those summaries to bring up the strategic including go, improvement and suspension: 1. Go:(1)Find out the financial aid and assistance from the local businesses chronically. (2)The festival could be hosted during long holidays in order to increase the audience. (3)The organizer has to plan a complete and independent place for performances. (4)The organizer can set up giveback and knockdown plans to let more people contact with art. (5)The shows can have several kinds of styles including classical, recreational, creative and experimental performances. Abstract Due to the government's advocations of the two-day weekend, the increase in national income, the changes in consumption patterns, the increase in recreational demand and the changes in the industrial activity patterns, "festivals and industrial tourism" gradually gets more attention. “2015 Fluid Sexuality International Film Festival” was held from March 13th to 15th, 2015 at SPOT Huashan. A total of 11 domestic and international films was screened in the film festival, which aimed to break the common misconceptions of the gender and sexual imaginations – to diminish the prejudice and boundary between races, to emphasize on the fluidity and uncertainty of sex/gender, to establish the communication on human emotions, and to emphasize the respect and embracement of the distinguished shapes of sex and gender in creating a “coolest” ideology among human interactions. Under my curation, the film festival was categorized into three subjects with different angles. “Not Only LGBT” conveyed the fluidity and unpredictability of the world of affection; Using “Cupid” who controls the love arrow as a symbol, in this program we screened wonderful and diverse stories about love/desire from various countries. The program “Sexual Diversity in Asia” was intended to explore the sexuality among the Chinese-speaking territories by collecting films from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. This program exhibited the multiple challenges and border-crossing on the emotion side. The program was expected to relocate “classicism” like those well-known wisdom idoms. “Country Focus: Israel” focused on films from Israel where the national recognition situation is similar to Taiwan, and to discover how the city of Tel-Aviv is viewed “gender-friendly,” and how the government uses the “friendliness to genders” as their marketing strategy. I structured the festival based on the “queer theory,” using its idea of how gender is built by society, and how the alternative angle of “obscurity, fluidity and uncertainty” of gender itself should be applied. By doing so, I was able to advocate the equality rights for the diversity of sex/gender. The film festival was honored with the sponsorship of our government and the Israeli Economic and Cultural Office, which allowed the festival to be held smoothly. This essay was written and organized with detailed description of the execution process and the self-examination of this author as the curator. On top of that, the film festival was curated what I’ve learned from the Department of Filmmaking and how I sincerely come out to express myself.

The situation of society had used to be difficult and agitation in Taiwan in the past because it is an immigration society. Religion has become a comfort and support to people at that time. Mazu belief become customs and culture in generally life after being brought to Taiwan by immigrators. Nowadays, it becomes one of important beliefs in global Chinese people cause by the tracks of Fujian immigrators over the world. Religious event is getting more and more important for leisure and tourism development. Dajia Mazu pilgrimage was become both religious and sightseeing festival for spreading itself to the world. The festival planners and stakeholders usually strive for create an unforgettable experience to fulfill the participants of festivals to increase revists tourists and volunteers。Consequently, festival planners and stakeholders can plan and maintain a festival for attracting tourists by understanding the value of participants and the relationship between value, attributes of festival and their need. In this study, we use the Means-end chain theory to clarify the relationship between participants’ experiential values, consequences and attributes. Participants are classified into religious zentou, festival tourists, tour package group according to participation ways. Furthermore, festival tourists are classified into three categoried that named “whole journey walking tourists”, “partial journey tourists” and “point visit tourists” by level of involvement. In sum, the responsers are totally classified into five categories which are religious zentou, whole journey walking tourists, partial journey tourists and point visit tourists and tour package group. Researcher collect responsers’ information and recontact ways in Dajia Jenn Lann Tample and Dadu trains station at April, 16 and 17, 2010. We get 207 interview candidates in onsite survey. As a result, we interviewed with 30 responsers in each category except whole journey walking tourists which only 20 responsers. Results are shown that all participants think highly of ”spirituality” of values. In addition, participants are classified according to participation ways. Religious zentou think highly of ”security”. In turn, three different levels of involment of festival tourists all regard “spirituality” as important value. And tour package group regard “benevolence” and ”power and achievement” as important value。As expected, each classification of participants has its unique chain from the attribute of participation ways. The values of religious zentou are most centralize that start from”religious theme” of attributes which lead to”positive emotion” of consequence. Three levels of festival tourists have varity unique chains, for instance of site seeing of festival tourists starts from”trandition program” and ”community ceremony”which would lead to ”spirituality”, “benevolence”, “hedonism and stimulate”, “trandition” of values. In particular, tour package group own most variety values so that the unique chains start from variety attributes which are ”physical activity”, ”religious theme”, ”traditional program”, ”social activity”, ” altruistic piety”, “community ceremony “ and lead to ”security”, ”power and achievment”, ”benevolence”, ”hedonism and stimulate”, ”trandition” of values. According to the result, participants have different congnitive process of value because the variety of participation ways. Suggestions of festival planning start from attributes of festival which can be improve concretely. For example, festival tourists did pursue ”benevolence” but still fewer than tour package group. Therefore, we suggest that create the communitas between participants to strengthen the society function of Mazu belief. Second,”traditional program” is regarded as the most important by tour package group in all categories. We can understand that package tour with elaborating on culture let much people perceive tranditional program more. The final suggestion is about culture inheritance and spread, religious zentou plays an important role in this subject. It requires general festival tourists to join this job and connect with zentou together to solve the barrier of inheritance.

In recent years, there has been a surge of popularity in culture and creative Industries, with countries around the world coming to realize its economic potential. The fusion of art and industry is the dominant trend in the Culture Creative Industries field today. In addition, many countries around the world have begun to realize the importance of local culture, identifying the view that local cultural characteristics distinguish the special features of an area while it also establishes a means of self-identification among the community. Among these, art and cultural festivals also bring about intercity competitiveness, reinvent the image of the area and also improve the spiritual and cultural life of citizens. It therefore comes as no surprise that it is one of the main marketing strategies for local culture in many countries and cities alike, with government institutions and academia also paying close attention to it. This study focuses on two of Kaohsiung’s attractions that feature the local cultural characteristics and city image the most as case studies: the “Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival” and “Kaohsiung International Steel and Iron Sculpture Festival”. Except for refering to documentation, which contributed to the basic theoretical research structure, the researcher conducted both qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative information was also collected through in-depth interviews with event planners, project contractors, and arts management professionals. Quantitative data was collected through surveys. This study attempts to investigate two art and cultural festivals, including their background, development and the cultural meaning. The study further attempts to assesses the core values, process, effects, efficiency and shortcoming of Kaohsiung International Container and Steel & Iron Sculpture Festivals through theoretical and practical ananlyses, which involve the cross verification of festival planning & management and the four different features of cultural festivals: creativity, local originality, economic, and social education efficacy. The study intends to find a direction for sustainable management of the festival. Last but not least, the study has come to the following four conclusions through analyses and observation: 1.Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival and Steel & Iron Sculpture Festival features the characteristics of the local cultural industry, but did not highlight the citizens’ unique humanistic character in Kaohsiung. 2.Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival and Steel & Iron Sculpture Festivals have considerably influenced on the strengthened Kaohsiung residents’ cultural identity. Such cultural identity should be built progressively and developed thoroughly through education. 3.“The industrial culturalization” of Kaohsiung International Container and Steel& Iron Sculpture Festival has truly brought about the reforming and the regeneration turning point of local industries. The true results of the festival’s cultural industrialization has however been called into question. 4.Kaohsiung International Container and Steel & Iron Sculpture Festivals are the result of the interaction of government and NGOs, under the “publicly owned, privately run” operation model. There are still numerous difficulties and issues to absolve regarding this model, such as risk in outsourcing and lack of monetary assistance.

A big and successful festival not only can attract many thousands of visitors in a short time, but also can improve local residents’ income, cultural recognition, and physical environment. Countries such as England, France, and the United States have used their distinctive cultural or ethnic festivals to attract foreign visitors for promoting their traditional culture and generating revenue from festival tourism. For example, the Edinburgh Festival in England, Festival d’ Avignon in France, Next Wave Festival in New York, USA are ones of the most successful art festivals and became the models for other festivals in the world. As for the art festivals in Taiwan, they are numerous but some of them are not successful. They are even criticized as meaningless and criticized because they do not develop significant business opportunities for local communities. The annual religional custom of Dajia Mazu pilgrimage (Taichung County Mazu International Festival)becomes the most important festival activity for decades. Every year during the month of March the pilgrimage is the well-known activity because it has been broadcast a lot by media. Although there are many activities held by authorities, there is no one activity that can compared with the pilgrimage of Dajia Mazu. What is the reason why pilgrimage of Dajia Mazu is still in the spotlight even though many years have passed? This research analyzed the content reported by the media and focused on the proportion of folk custom, society and the politics, which included the negative and controversial messages that affect the views. Newspapers and television news broadcasters such as APPLE DAILY, LIBERTY TIMES, CHINA TIMES,UNITED DAILY NEWS, TVBS and ETTV were chosen to be subjects for the two analysises in this research. Festival has become the important tourism resources in the world. This activity can integrate local peculiar humane resources and culture assets. Not only can strengthen the local image, but also can create economic benefits. However most organizers focus on economic benefits only, but ignore the quality and service. Therefore it will cause difficulty to attract visitors and reparticipate again. This study reviews the related literatures in activity quality, customer behavior, visitor satisfaction and activity benefit. Then we try to build 「festival benefit evaluation model」 with structural equation model. Accordingly Miao Li International Mask Festival are selected as research subject. And we use LISREL to verify appropriating factors of benefit evaluation model and causality. The mains findings of this study summarized on the following: 1. From measure model, “the transportation convenience” represents the highest to activity quality, secondly “the perimeter resource and expense” shows the interviewed visitors comparatively pay more attention to the local facilities provided. And "the content attraction" factor represents the lowest, but still effect the activity quality obviously. Besides the benefits developed by this activity for visitors show two highest items as "the region develop" and “the culture radicate”. However "economic benefit" factor shows the lowest. 2. From the path analysis: (1) Activity quality significantly influences visitor''s satisfaction; (2) Activity quality significantly influences the behavior; (3) Activity quality not significantly influences activity benefit; (4) Visitor''s satisfaction significantly influences the behavior; (5) Visitor''s satisfaction significantly influences by activity benefit; (6) The behavior significantly influences activity benefit. Referring 1. and 2. “activity quality” will influence “activity benefit” via intermediary factor “visitor satisfaction” and “ the behavior”. Using LISREL this study finds benefit evaluation model explaining the cause and effect between main related variables. The activity organizers offer more facility and service, the visitor revisiting activity and satisfaction become higher, Consequently the activity benfits will be realised.

Abstract The The purpose of this study is to compare the differences of two music festivals (Taichung Jazz Festival and Chiayi International Band Festival) in their participants’ motivation, satisfaction and loyalty. Field survey and convention sampling were used. Valid samples of the two surveys are 804 and 335. Results indicated that participants were more motivated for “cultural exploration” in Chiayi International Band Festival attendance than Taichung Jazz Festival. However, the two factors of satisfaction in the two festivals were in the opposite direction. The approval score of the “satisfied of the activities’ services” was higher in Chiayi International Band Festival than in Taichung Jazz Festival. But the approval score of the “satisfied of the activities’ contents” was higher in Taichung Jazz Festival than in Chiayi International Band Festival. The loyalty scores were not significantly different in the two music festivals. The relationship of the four motivational factors and the two satisfaction factors of the two festivals were computed by cross-samples structural equation model and analyzed results of cross-validation. Further implications were discussed in this study.

Most of the researches in visitor's crowding perception have been focused on outdoor recreation areas, and only a few tackle the issue in a festival setting. Although the participants of a festival have different characteristics than the visitors to outdoor recreation areas, the theories of perceived crowding may also apply to define the quality of a festival experience. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze whether there are significant differences among visitors in crowding perception, and to explore the influence of related factors on perceived crowding in a festival. It used the Yilan International Children Folklore & Folkgame Festival as a case study, hoping the results of this study can provide some operational suggestions for the festival management. The study was conducted by using questionnaire survey. The content of questionnaire included four parts: the questions about density-induced stimulus, the discrepancy between the expected and the perceived number of encounters, the perceived crowding, and the basic demographic questions. 289 valid questionnaires were collected. The analysis of variance showed that: women agreed more that there were many people around; elderly visitors had stronger perception in part of density-induced stimulus and perceived crowding; married-with-children visitors had stronger perception in part of density-induced stimulus than the unmarried and married-with-no-children visitors. The frequent visitors had stronger perception in part of density-induced stimulus. The result of regression analysis showed that the density-induced stimulus (divided into space and facilities stimulus) and the discrepancy between the expected and the perceived number of encounters had a significant positive impact on tourists perceived crowding, and the space stimulus played the most important role.

Lam, Peter. "Heterotopia of Spectacles: Toronto International Film Festival in the Entertainment District." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/4992.

Full text
Abstract:
The Toronto International Film Festival Group (tiff.) is the latest addition to an existing array of spectacles offered in Entertainment District of Toronto. Spectacles remove us from reality, surprise us, connect us with others, and allow us to participate as a part of a community. However, their extraordinary nature can be so enticing that they put us into a trance that can leave us vulnerable to political and economic influences. This thesis uses Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopias, or ‘other places’, to shed light on the values, characteristics and functions of spaces dedicated to these spectacles. These spaces exist in the grey zone between the political-public domain and the economic-private property. They are sanctuaries for events, activities and illusions that deviate from those of the commonplace. The Entertainment District is a heterotopia that reflects and fosters Toronto’s enjoyment and fascination with spectacles. This thesis looks at how the district can further its role as a heterotopia of spectacle by juxtaposing the existing experiences with a variety of contemporary experiences such as free play and film-related events introduced through John Street’s use of the concept of shared space and the introduction of a new home for tiff. Portions of John Street are transformed into continuous ground surfaces that encourage pedestrian circulation within the district, as well as the introduction of new spectacles. The new tiff. building situates itself along this continuous ground surface and extends up to the building’s edge and through laneways to an internal courtyard. The building reads as an incompatible cluster of skewed volumes with their own distinct function stacked on top of one another. The agitated and fragmented geometry of the building is developed through a series of governing lines and curves which sets themselves within the Cartesian grid of the city at irregular angles. These volumes are wrapped in a variety of opaque, transparent and translucent materials that frame views of events on the street, in the neighbourhood, and in the city. This thesis of discourse and design will be of interest to all those wishing to understand heterotopias or ‘other places’ dedicated to spectacles.

ABSTRACT Ying-Chiu Ma, the Mayor of Taipei City, has instituted the ideas of cultivation for the twenty-first century citizens, district autonomy, and self-run governing for the sub-regions during his tenure of office since 1998. As for district autonomy, the district office has played a key role in realizing the policy itself. Therefore, improving the standard of quality and the capability of the district office are rather important. However, both district autonomy and self-run government call for citizen’s cooperation as well as city government’s authorizing. In order to enhance the function of the district office in managing the local affairs, cultural industrialization is regarded as a potential factor which may benefit the local environment and community. Shilin district’s movement towards internationalization has started from 1960 when dormitories of the United State Army moved into Tien-Mu., American Navy Hospital, Taipei American School, Taipei Japanese School, and the various embassies have all found Tien-Mu a suitable region to stay. Thus, Tien-Mu has become a place filled with exotic scenes since then. Naturally, Shilin District has the advantage of being a member of the global village. Consequently, ‘International Cultural Festival’ was founded under such circumstance. Shilin District Office has been holding ‘International Cultural Festival’ annually since 1999. All the various participants such as corporations, schools, and citizens are able to learn about different cultures through such activity. The thesis aimed at examining the relationship between the district government and cultural industrialization by reviewing papers about cultural activities held across the country as well as the world , exposing the process of ‘Shilin International Cultural Festival’ (questionnaires included), and interviewing the sponsors, foreign schools, and the third sector. Additionally, the author adds his own opinions based on his experience of being a chief of district government for many years. The thesis uses ‘Shilin International Cultural Festival’ as an individual case, endeavoring to establish a model which can be adopted by other related issues. The summary of this thesis are as follows: 1. to achieve the goal of ‘community built to the master plan’ by unifying different groups within the district 2. to hold activities inviting to the public and private sector''s cooperation 3. the “district government” should be capable of holding events which help to improve the local economy The suggestions that are made are as follows: 1.to modify district office from subordination to city governments management to full autonomy in the future and establish a cultural division 2. to dispatch neighborhood directors after careful selection; to reform the order of the neighborhood 3. to set up offices for sub-district zones for the onvenience of the citizens 4. to grant the district government with full authorization to develop and manage the tourist industry 5. to suggest city government to establish a cultural foundation within each district 6. to encourage schools to offer related subjects such as culture and tourism to educate the professionals Keywords:Cultural Industry, Local Government, Community Building, District Government, International Cultural Festival, Taipei City

In recent years, the amount of festival events is greatly enhanced. Among all the festival events, Dajia MaTsu International Festival is the main activity of February to May. However, owing to the limitation of resources, it is not enough to develop tourism only by natural resources and artificial facilities. It is also necessary to inject distinguish cultural dimensions into the festival event and plan some creative activities, so that the government can not only preserve traditional culture but also provide various kinds of activities for leisure. This study explore how the plan of a festival event is made on the viewpoint of culture and tourism. After documentation reviewing, I choose 8 dimensions as cultural factors, such as local culture development and etc. . The objective of this study is to confer the relations among these dimensions and festival events objectives, also to see if the objectives are achieved. The study acquired the primary data by the tourist questionnaires that the tourists need to participate in this festival event - MaTsu International Festival. The study took random sampling way to sieve samples out, totally 500 questionnaires are distributed and 488 are gathered. I used Pearson Chi-Square Test, T test, One-Way ANOVA and Pearson Correlation to analyze data. The results of this research are as following:This study reveals that cultural factors has a mild correlation with tourist factors. Differences of tourist cognition are partly reasons of the divergences of cultural factor and tourist factors. Culture and tourism can be the external variables of festival events objective. Differences of tourists’ social economic attributes are not the main reasons which causes the difference of cultural and tourist factors. There is significant correlation between the tourist cognition, tourist social economic attribute and part festival events objectives. There is significant correlation between the tourist cognition and tourist social economic attribute. The result represents that the cultural and tourism dimension can be the estimate factor of making activity objective, but not valid in improving local cultural development or leading the deeper concern of local culture out. Second, on making an activity objective, more efforts should be made to ensure local culture walk into campus. Finally, on global mapping of Chinese religious activities, the better strategy will be rooting in Taiwan and mapping out an overall planning and management in the world.

Since the last century, the continuous and rapid development of festivals has been creating a whole new culture, educational philosophy and economic value, and bringing relaxation to human beings in the busy life. Due to the benefits mentioned above, many countries around the world have been making a large investment in holding festivals. Without a doubt, the core value and sustainability of festivals should be discussed and emphasized on, where the relationship between the residents and the festivals has also become a critical issue. This study focused on the relationship between residents and festivals, probing “psychological ownership" and "involvement” as the core theories. I-Lan International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival was chosen as the case study festival, and the residents in Wujie Township, I-Lan County, were invited to fill out the questionnaires. There were 238 valid questionnaires, and statistical analyses were carried out using Amos version 5.0 and SPSS version 17.0. The results showed that there were medium-high level of local residents' festive psychological ownership and their involvement, and the relationship between the two constructs was mutually beneficial. Second, residents' psychological ownership was deeply influenced by “the representative of local culture” the most, and the most important factor with involvement was “the link to residents' self-expression and festivals.” Third, there was no significant effect between residents' demographic background and festive psychological ownership, while visitors and part-time employees did have positive effect on the psychological ownership. Fourth, differences in age and education have a significant effect on the degree of involvement, and different participations on the three dimensions of involvement have positive effects on involvement. The study suggested that the relations between residents and festivals should be built on a virtuous cycle, and the mechanisms for residents to participate in the festival be improved and strengthened. We hope that this study can provide festivals organizers with some useful references when they consider the relationship between festivals and residents.

With the trend of globalization, cities, areas rather than countries, are increasingly becoming the principal protagonists between geographical regions. The competition among cities to establish their credentials as the best choice for prospective visitors, investors and talents will intensify as places focus on how to convey their competitive edge and relevance as a place brand. Even newly developing places can now compete with the charm and appeal of cosmopolitan cities. Unless the latter retain and enhance resources, outward migration is inevitable; residents wish for opportunity-filled places in order to exercise their individual skills and interests. This paradigm means that cities must proactively shape their images and influence what the world thinks of them and the local governments have to position and market themselves with strategic intent. Place branding is suggested as the appropriate strategy for cities to manage their images and increase reputation. Hosting events on a large scale, such as sport games, world expositions and or holding cultural and iconic festivals in recent years have become a key and efficient way of place branding and positive economic impacts. Based on service marketing mix, this study investigates the key factors of successful events through literature review on selected case “Taiwan International Balloon Festival” and interview of professionals from different standpoints of stakeholders in this case. Comprehensive guidelines and key factors of event marketing in such case are suggested as result and reference for organizers when they are making branding strategy and marketing plan in the future. In the end, this study addresses the future trends and event marketing tips and hope this article can be some help.
