The article investigates whether international comparative higher education research has grown considerably during the past two decades. It reports the outcomes of a recent bibliometric study which found three key characteristics of international comparative higher education research: a relatively steady state, a larger share of international collaborative articles in international comparative research compared to non-comparative research, and a preference for small-scale country clusters for comparison.

Pless, Nicola M., and Markéta Borecká. "Comparative analysis of International Service Learning Programs." Journal of Management Development 33, no. 6 (June 9, 2014): 526–50. http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/jmd-04-2014-0034.

Abstract:
Purpose – International service learning is a new trend in management development and a new field of research. International Service Learning Programs (ISLP) are experiential corporate volunteering initiatives designed to give employees the chance to work for a short spell abroad (often in a developing or emerging market) on a service assignment with a partner from the social sector (e.g. NGO, social enterprise). The service assignment is a project defined with a social-sector partner on which the corporate employee works full-time on a pro-bono basis and contributes his/her knowledge and expertise in exchange for a rich learning experience. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the use of ISLP in business firms and conducts a comparative analysis of six programs set up by multinational corporations from three industries (health, technology, and accounting and professional services). It identifies characteristics and similarities among programs, discusses differences, offers criteria for program classification and areas for future research. As such, it is an important starting point for quantitative studies. Design/methodology/approach – This is a qualitative study based on six ISLP. The data were gathered through desk research, interviews with program representatives and a structured questionnaire containing closed and open-ended questions. Findings – Regardless of the stated aims (which usually stress value for the participants, the company and the communities), most programs had one clear focus (two programs in the area of leadership development, two in the area of community development) while two showed closely linked foci (with slightly greater emphasis on organization development than on the other areas). Research limitations/implications – The authors suggest that the type of ISLP has an effect on the learning outcomes. Since companies are still testing usefulness and outcomes of these programs, academic research that provides comparative quantitative data on the outcomes of such programs is of great value for business practice. Practical implications – This systematic overview and classification of ISLP is a starting point for empirical program comparisons as well as for the evaluation of different service learning approaches. This could prove very useful for other companies planning to set up or refine their own ISLP to achieve certain outcomes. Originality/value – This is the first paper that compares ISLP run by multinational corporations. It identifies a number of category areas in which they differ (e.g. in placement length, nature of the assignment – individual or in teams, learning methods used) and provides a typology for program classification (leadership development, organization development or community development).

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to apply internalization theory in the context of economic efficiency-driven institutions interacting with societal institutions that pursue broader goals. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis builds upon Buckley and Boddewyn’s (2015, this issue) recent work on the perceived need for multinational enterprises (MNEs) to supply public goods outside of their sphere of technical competences. This paper proposes a more restrictive approach: external markets will only be internalized if, on balance, the efficiency benefits of internalization outweigh its costs at the firm level, in line with orthodox internalization theory. Findings – MNEs replacing the activities of failing (or even absent) public sector institutions is a business phenomenon commonly observed in less developed economies. However, positive distributional effects and societal externalities without the required efficiency benefits at the firm level are insufficient for MNEs’ supply to occur. Practical implications – Managerial decisions in the internalization sphere will be guided by the transactional characteristics of the MNEs’ firm-specific advantages (FSAs) and the requisite complementary resources held by host country economic actors. Internalization theory thinking suggests applying various, specific principles to assess in a comparative institutional fashion whether “diversification” into supplying public goods will serve the MNEs’ efficiency goals, namely, the “cost of entry” test, the “better-off” test and the “value capture” test. Originality/value – Internalization theory provides a solid, efficiency-driven rationale to guide MNE choices on which activities the firm will conduct internally. The nature of the MNEs FSAs and the most efficient, feasible option to bundle firm-level resources and locally held resources in host environments are critical to these choices.

Abstract:
Indonesia is one of the world's largest pepper producing countries and most of Indonesia's pepper production is exported abroad. Apart from the superiority of Indonesia's natural resources, namely as a country with the second-largest area of pepper cultivation, now competition between countries cannot be measured only by the number of exports it owns. The existence of synergy between countries in producing a product with high economic value is evidence of trade integration between countries. This study aims to analyze the comparative advantage of Indonesian pepper compared to Vietnam, Brazil, India, and Malaysia, to analyze the competitive advantage of Indonesian pepper, and to analyze the value chain of Indonesian pepper. This study used a sample of five countries, namely Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil, India, and Malaysia. This research used quantitative and qualitative research approaches. The methods used in this research used Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Porter's Diamond Theory, and value added analysis. The analysis results show that the five competing countries have a comparative advantage over pepper; Indonesia has a competitive advantage in conditions of natural resource factors. Indonesia's participation in the global value chain is declining. The main focus of the government in 2020 is on the input, production, capital, and market sides. Keywords: comparative advantage, competitive advantage, pepper, value added, value chain.

Abstract:
Understanding the drivers that dictate the productivity of marine ecosystems continues to be a globally important issue. A vast literature identifies three main processes that regulate the production dynamics of such ecosystems: biophysical, exploitative and trophodynamic. Exploring the prominence among this ‘triad’ of drivers, through a synthetic analysis, is critical for understanding how marine ecosystems function and subsequently produce fisheries resources of interest to humans. To explore this topic further, an international workshop was held on 10–14 May 2010, at the National Academy of Science's Jonsson Center in Woods Hole, MA, USA. The workshop compiled the data required to develop production models at different hierarchical levels (e.g. species, guild, ecosystem) for many of the major Northern Hemisphere marine ecosystems that have supported notable fisheries. Analyses focused on comparable total system biomass production, functionally equivalent species production, or simulation studies for 11 different marine fishery ecosystems. Workshop activities also led to new analytical tools. Preliminary results suggested common patterns driving overall fisheries production in these ecosystems, but also highlighted variation in the relative importance of each among ecosystems.
