Abstract:
International business relations are much older than we usually think. The epoch of global economy began, when prehistoric hunters first reached a tribe of prehistoric farmers and exchanged their products. Nowadays we define international business as all business transactions, involving 2 or more countries, and such a wide notion brings us to the idea, that international business is an extremely complex system, including different types of activities. Typically for market economy, people or organizations, involved in foreign business affairs, aim to maximize their profits, but the rule doesn’t work when we speak about governments, which may be motivated not only by profit prospects, but by other forces, like supporting financial stability or acquiring irreplaceable goods, needed to satisfy some vital social needs. Abstract:
Talhado Fishing Enterprises (Pty) Ltd is a squid fishing company founded in 1988, with sea and land based freezing facilities. Operating from the East coast situated in the Port Elizabeth harbour, the company processes and packages its caught and bought out product for sales to its export customers situated in Spain and Italy. The company is privately owned, 38.8 percent owned by previously disadvantaged persons. This study examines the whether it would be feasible to expand its operations into the USA, namely into the California area where a squid fishery exists. The study further centres around the company’s existing markets, namely Spain and Italy, to establish whether demand exists to purchase this Californian squid specie. The reason for the study is that due to legislative and political issues growth in the squid industry in South Africa is limited. It is therefore considered pertinent to source further supply of product in order to expand its business. The aim of the study is establish whether it is feasible to expand the company’s operations internationally and does the outcome of this initial study warrant the development of an in depth business plan. In order to achieve these objectives the following approach was followed: A comprehensive literature study was conducted with regard to the industry internationally and locally; Interviews was conducted with independent experts such as attorneys and industry role players situated in California; Potential sellers of businesses were sourced in the California and interviews were arranged with these role players; The response to the interviews was measured against the literature study conducted and financial statements supplied.

Abstract:
This dissertation is presented in the form of three essays on International Business studies. The purpose of the dissertation is to address the interdependence between the macroeconomy and finance at three levels of analysis: the conceptual level, the economic policy level, and the corporate policy level. Each essay addresses one of these levels. The empirical focus is on developing countries in general---and Latin America in particular---because in recent history these countries have experienced large economic fluctuations and major regime shifts. The introduction surveys the literature on the relationship between the financial sector and economic growth. The first essay synthesizes the literature concerning the benefits, risks, and costs of financial liberalization in developing countries and presents illustrative data on its recent implementation and outcomes. The second essay investigates the causal relationships between real activity, inflation, and financial assets' returns in seven major Latin American economies (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela) over the period 1976--1999, using vector autoregression analysis to explore the puzzling negative relationship observed elsewhere between real stock returns and inflation. The third essay investigates whether macroeconomic factors are as important as traditional firm-specific and country-specific factors as determinants of capital structure for a sample of firms from the seven Latin American countries mentioned above in the period 1986--2000 using panel data analysis. Empirical comparisons are drawn with industrial economies: the G-7 economies in the second essay and a subset of United States firms in the third. The final chapter presents the conclusions of this dissertation. The main finding is that differences between advanced and emerging economies in the relationship among economic variables do not seem as clear-cut as often assumed by academicians, policy

Abstract:
Establishing new, international business relationships is a highly relevant and critical issue for many firms that want to go abroad, as international business relationships are a rapidly growing attested by the increased importance of conducting business across national borders. However, the risk for failing in initiating new, international business relationships is significant; giving the rise for a need to increase the knowledge about such processes and those circumstances that may affect it along the way. Despite the addressed need, the literature on the area of international business relationship initiation processes has been recognized as scarce. Thus the purpose of this study is therefore to enrich the research area with an increased understanding of the phenomenon of international business relationship initiation processes. The purpose is achieved by combining empirical findings with theories from the disciplines of internationalization, business relationships, and networking. Relationships are bridges to new markets, and thus initiations of international business relationships may be regarded as the internationalization process of a firm. Third actors are a part of the dyad?s network, and by merging its networking effect on the dyad, new theory is new theory is developed concerning initiations of international business relationships and third actors? influence on these. The empirical findings are deducted from a case study of the relationship initiation process between the software supplier Powel and the engineer consultancy firm Norconsult Andina in Chile. Through the case study, the study will i) provide a description of the characteristics of the international business relationship initiation process, ii) explain how third actors may influence this process, and iii) identify how the difference in the third actors? nationality influence the relationship initiation process. The choice of using a case study design reflects upon the complexity of business relationships, whose initiation is extensively subjected to dynamism. Drawing on the strengths of such a research design, the study employs multiple source of evidence by collecting data from participating-observations, direct observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Based on the findings of the study, it is suggested that those factors regarded as influential for the process can be divided into internal, relational, and external factors, respectively extracted from the firm, the relational, and the environmental level of the business relationship to be initiated. Third actors are suggested to belong to the relational factor category, and can take the forms as persons, organizations, artifacts and piece of work, solely or multiple. Together with the internal and external factors, they have a relative influence on the relationship initiation process, upon which sum decides the outcome; whether the process decreases or increases its closeness to a business agreement, linger for a period of time, or even stop. The study suggests that the relationship initiation process is even more dynamic than previously found in the literature, which is further emphasized by seeing the process from the perspective of both parts of the dyad: The process patterns may differ, however, they do converge as the closeness to the business agreement decreases, which is reached simultaneously in time.Further, vertically linked third actors are found to be particularly influential for the process, especially if they are linked to both of the companies of the dyad. Concerning their international dimension, they can be seen in terms of not only their nationality, but also their international experience and country of presence. Indeed, the two latter dimensions appear to be most important in terms of reaching the business agreement, implying that managers should focus their efforts on those customer companies that are common for the two firms, have international experience, and have local presence in the country where the future business is supposed to take place.Based upon the findings of the study, the thesis contributes to the theory by suggesting a new conceptual model on international business relationship initiation processes. However, as this thesis is merely based on a single case study, the new model should be tested in future studies by the use of a higher number of cases across industries and national borders.

Abstract:

Background: The increasing global business competitiveness thoroughly intensifies the demand for improvements of communication and negotiation skills in order to adjust competence to successfully conduct the work of getting treaties of cooperation and business development to work everywhere. It is simply a matter of survival for an increasing amount of multinational companies operating in all kinds of different locations and businesses around the world. This state of nature also holds for Swedish and Spanish companies, that both heavily depend on foreign trade, and whose negotiating behavior is going to be the focus of this study. For every international company facing the challenges of developing new business in foreign cultures it should be of interest to find out what would improve their business interactions. The study is therefore investigating possible ways of how to deal with cultural implications that might appear in international business negotiations.

Purpose: To study and analyze the presence of cultural impact on international business negotiations, with a special emphasis on Swedish-Spanish business negotiators.

Method: Considering negotiations as a process-oriented phenomenon observed from empirical studies of individual cases and drawing conclusions thereof, the study takes a hermeneutic qualitative-inductive interaction approach. The frame of references are constitued by a thorough spectra of well established theories developed within the fields of communication, negotiation and intercultural studies.

Result: The study proves that the behavior of negotiators are influencing the outcome of the negotiation, particularly in international contexts where the parties have different experiences, historical and cultural backgrounds as well as different perspectives on life.

Abstract:
This dissertation comprises three essays, each of which studies a business phenomenon in the context of vertical supply chains. The first essay studies the equity stakes that downstream producers hold in their upstream input suppliers. It applies and extends a property-rights model to make predictions concerning the size of such equity stakes and tests three main hypotheses using firm-level data from the Japanese auto parts industry. The second essay studies the impact of multinational retailers on China's exports. As the multinational retailers enter China, they may increase Chinese exports through linkages with distant markets where they have operations. Meanwhile, the presence of multinational retailers may stimulate productivity growth among local Chinese suppliers. Chinese city-level exports data are utilized to test and distinguish these two mechanisms. The third essay synthesizes, extends and illustrates the theory of exclusionary contracts. Two new channels though which exclusionary contracts in vertical supply chains could be anti-competitive are proposed. A recent antitrust case illustrates all incentives---the two established channels and the two new ones.

Abstract:
In 2009, facing the changes in the international scenario and the impacts generated by the discovery of the Brazilian pre-salt in the previous year, a new strategic positioning was designed for the PETROBRAS International Business Area. This new positioning is grounded in the concepts of profitability, integration and complementarity with the company national activities. In this sense, to ensure a greater strategic alignment, integration and complementarity within its activities, the International Area started the development of Business Models for each of its axis of action. The Business Models are a tool that aims to assist in the planning of the company and describes the way the company operates through the definition / identification of its customers, the statement of the value that is delivered to them, the definition of the form in which this value is delivered and the quantification of the costs and benefits expected. The goal of this dissertation is to show how these Business Models are being implemented and to verify whether they are appropriate to analyze the strategies of the company. The methodology adopted was action research, in which the author is part of the project, and is involved both in its execution while develops knowledge.

Abstract:

Introduction: Already in the 1970’s, internationalisation was noted as a striking trend in business. Since then, the speed of internationalisation has increased as infrastructure, communication, and IT have decreased space and time barriers for international trade. Today, companies must engage in international activities to survive in the competitive environment and researchers argue that firms’ international performance is determined by their ability to establish relationships.

Problem: In order to facilitate the search for business actors globally, Chamber Trade Business to Business AB offers a database in which companies can post business inquiries. Lately, the number of inquiries published in the database has decreased. Therefore, the question arose what other tools companies use instead when searching for business partners. This empirically driven problem is also matched by a theoretical need for more research about how firms establish international relationships.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to analyse how small Swedish B2B companies find downstream international partners.

Theoretical framework: In order to create a frame of reference for guidance in the collection and analysis of the empirical data, theory has been divided into three sections; Internationalisation theory, Business to Business relationships theory, and Means for international interaction.

Method: To fulfil the purpose of the thesis, a qualitative study with an inductive approach was undertaken. Secondary data in terms of literature and academic articles were scanned to create a theoretical framework and to facilitate the collection of primary data. Primary data was gathered from ten small Swedish firms in order to find out how their downstream international business relationships had been initiated.

Conclusion: Our thesis concludes that many Swedish sellers start out their internationalisation to countries with close distance by responding to unsolicited orders from foreign customers. Over time, their proactiveness increases and they primary use the following channels in order to find international partners: networks, trade fairs, trade- and industry organisations, and the Internet. Databases have several defaults for being a useful search tool, mainly their lack of precise search criteria and personal interaction. Further, when companies offer a high quality product, a reputation is created about the company. Consequently, foreign customers pull the company into new countries and the need for external search tools is low.

Abstract:
This article considers the evolution of international business cycle interdependencies among 27 developed and developing countries since the beginning of 1870s, utilising the generalized vector autoregressive (VAR)-based spillover index of Diebold and Yilmaz (2012), which allows the construction of a time-varying measure of business cycle spillovers. We find that, on average, 65% of the forecast error variance of the 27 countries' business cycle shocks is due to international spillovers. However, the magnitude of international business cycle spillovers varies considerably over time. There is a clear increasing trend since the end of World War II and until the middle 1980s. After that, international business cycle interdependencies declined during the period that was dubbed the Great Moderation, and stabilized around the beginning of the twenty-first century. During the Great Recession of 2008-2009, international business cycle spillovers increased to unprecedented levels. Finally, developed countries are consistently ranked as net transmitters of cyclical shocks to developing counties throughout the sample. (authors' abstract)

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A virtual monopoly has existed in the mohair processing industry for decades. As a result of 25 years of regulated marketing, producers lack marketing experience. This “monopolistic” situation has led to stagnation in production and eventually to alarming decreases world-wide. The aim of this research report is to provide a business plan for a company (Fibre Traders International (Pty) Ltd) that can capitalise on the opportunities in the market for mohair products in order to secure the funding needed to take advantage of these opportunities in a manner which would eventually also empower suppliers and clients.

Abstract:
This study discusses challenges and possibilities with newly established firms related to international business opportunity development, and examines the role of branding in the process. The aim of the research is to analyse how international business opportunities and branding are intertwined in new and small firms’ activities. The study starts with a literature review where the phenomenon is approached by reviewing focal theories related to international business opportunity development and branding. The study continues with an empirical research by examining the international business opportunity development and branding of two Oulu-based newly founded firms operating in the high technology industry. The empirical research is carried out by theme-based interviews. The study revealed that international business opportunities can be supported by branding activities starting from the very early phase of founding a new firm. The different functions and actors of the international business opportunities are distinguished to analyse the connections to the branding activities and actors impacting branding process, and to analyse how branding efforts can support the international business opportunity development. Hence, the international business opportunity development within a new firm was depicted as a process incorporating the main activities of learning, networking, internationalising, innovating and creating customer value. The business opportunity is co-created together with the specialised capabilities of the main actors: entrepreneur(s), organisation, social networks and stakeholders. Branding being a continuous process to co-create value, building the brand identity and image promoting the awareness, reliability and recognition of the new firm can support also the development of the international business opportunity and nurture the network relationships management. The results show insights into how the development of the international business opportunity can utilise brand building endeavours to overcome the major challenges that occurred due to specific context of a newly established firm. The study advances the contemporary knowledge by pointing towards the supportive role of branding in establishing new customer and partner relationships to develop the international business opportunity. The purpose of this research was to gain a more profound understanding of the development of the international business opportunities, and to enhance the development of international entrepreneurship theory in order to explore the relations of the phenomenon. The scope of this study is not the emergence of the business opportunities as such, but the continuous interactive process of discovering, creating, evaluating and exploiting, thus, the development of opportunities in order to be able to collect the fruits of the specific international business opportunity. Branding has often regarded as a business functions for the bigger companies requiring heavy investments and big organization behind, which small firms with limited resources generally lack. This research is to understand the role of branding in new and small firms established for developing the international business opportunity. The present study encourages entrepreneurs to systematically think of the potential advantages of branding for the development of their international business opportunity and for tackling the challenges faced by a new and small firm.

Abstract:
What is Culture? This word has several meanings, all derived from its Latin source, which refers to the tilling of the soil. Culture is always a collectiveve phenomenon, because it is at least partly shared with people whoes live or lived within the same social environment, which is where it was learned. Culture consists of the unwritten rules of the social game. It is the collective programming of the mind that distinguishes the members of one group or category of people from others. Culture has got a great impact on the international business, especially on negotiations, marketing, cooperation and some visible trade features. Before considering in what specific ways culture influences business, we should define the term of culture and clarify its aspects.

Křetínská, Tereza. "Leadership Communication Role within International Business Organization." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2014. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-193179.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the role of leadership communication within a multinational business organization. It aims to confirm the critical importance of communication provided by leaders to their team members. The literature review will focus on the existing communication flows within organizations and the current research results and insights in the field of leadership communication, which is a new, emerging domain of study. Thanks to recent quantitative research (Men, 2014b), it has been already confirmed that leadership communication has a direct effect on employee-organization relationships and overall internal communication. However, qualitative research has been suggested for validation of how the discovered model works in concrete environments (Men, 2014b). Thus, the research section will reveal the findings of in-depth semi-structured interview analysis within a global internal IT services provider which is part of a Group enterprise operating in the logistics industry world-wide. The thesis will culminate in defining logical reasoning for adding communication skills to the company's core competencies for organizational managers and leaders.

Kiss, Eszter Katalin. "International Undergraduate Business Students' Perceptions of Employability." Thesis, Griffith University, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/384295.

Full text
Abstract:
This study seeks responses to the following research questions: How do international business students understand employability skills? How do they perceive their employability? How do they perceive the university’s role in enhancing their employability? Graduate employability is a highly contested topic amongst the stakeholders of higher education involved in educating international students including education providers, international students, employers and the government (Gribble, 2015). The responsibility of universities to support students in adapting to employment is also debated. The Australian Government’s strategy to enhance graduate employability is based on three pillars: strengthening Australia’s education system, creating transformative relationships between people, institutions and governments, and competing globally for a solid reputation (Department of Education and Training, 2016). International students, however, need to overcome a number of barriers to be deemed employable. These barriers include lack of workplace skills and experience in an Australian workplace context, shortage of work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities, and industry reluctance to employ international students. Universities have increasingly introduced WIL opportunities as part of degree programs to more optimally integrate theory with practice. In applied programs such as education, engineering and medicine, practicums are a crucial part of the degree. Increasingly, WIL placements are also being incorporated into business degrees. The literature review of this thesis presents the changing context of higher education in Australia, challenges in business education, and a discussion of employability skills. The Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), with its core concepts of self-efficacy and career efficacy, constitutes the theoretical framework of this study. SCCT considers how academic and career interests are developed, how academic and career choices are formed, and how academic and career successes are achieved. The qualitative, exploratory methodology of the study focusses on international undergraduate business students’ perceptions of their employability and universities’ perceived role in enhancing employability. Using a phenomenographic approach, and purposive sampling, focus group discussions were conducted with all the students in the last of the three year levels of the undergraduate business degree offered at a small urban campus of an Australian university. The business degree program run by the case university caters almost entirely for international students. A survey was designed to collect participants’ demographic data. The key findings of the study included: (1) participants were unable to differentiate between employability skills, personality traits and job-specific skills; (2) Chinese participants raised the importance of social skills and networking; (3) students who had previous work experience reported higher perceived levels of work-readiness; (4) curriculum review was needed to ensure inclusion of more practical WIL components in the degree program; and (5) the provision of opportunities where knowledge gained in courses could be applied in professional contexts was considered to be highly desirable. A major limitation of this study was the small sample size. Other limitations are that the data collection took place in a single university and with students in the same year level – the final year of the Bachelor of Business program. The cross-sectional study provided the basis for future longitudinal research on the factors that impact on and promote international students’ perceptions of their employability. The current study aimed to contribute to development of SCCT and the concept of career self-efficacy. The research also made an applied contribution in terms of recommendations for curriculum change within business degrees offered by Australian universities.

Abstract:
Banalieva and Dhanaraj argue that digital service multinationals (DSMNCs) possess a new category of firm-specific advantage (FSA), the network advantage, and that, contrary to extant theory, they use networks as a mode of governance. I review the business models used by DSMNCs, compare them to non-digital ones, and explore what we can learn about them from extant IB theory. I conclude that network advantages are not a new category of FSAs, that networks are not a mode of governance, and that their use by DSMNCs is well explained by extant theory.

Abstract:
L'analisi svolta in questa tesi prende come punto di partenza le preziose pubblicazioni realizzate da uno dei maggiori esperti in studi di Globalizzazione e Strategia, il Professor Pankaj Ghemawat: “The New Global Road Map: Enduring Strategies for Turbulent Times”, “Redefining Global Strategy: Crossing Borders in a World Where Differences Still Matter ” e “Regional Strategies for Global Leadership”. L'attenzione è inizialmente posta sull'opera di Thomas Friedman "The World Is Flat".

Abstract:
It is an emerging phenomenon that the leading multinational companies are studying how to use the engagement experiences of customers and communities as the foundation of value co-creation. To achieve this, the business leaders have increasingly adopted an ecological organizational form, namely business ecosystem. Google, Amazon and Microsoft are the real world examples and pioneers in this field. However, in the academic research, it is addressed by a number of researchers that there is significant lack of empirical studies that examines the emergence and formation of business ecosystem, especially in ICT industry. In essence, this study takes Cloud as the context to develop concepts on the emergence of business ecosystem and examine the manifestation of such evolution in the emerging business field. Through extensive literature reviews and empirical interviews, the current study developed answers to the research question, “How do new business ecosystems emerge, in the context of Cloud computing?” at qualitative level. In general, it is considered in the study that business ecosystem is a type of more advanced business form emerged recently. It has the characteristics as follow: provision of value, integration with external partners, requiring multiple participants, shifting from individual to collaborative thinking, interdependence of the participants, value co-creation, co-petition, open innovation and shared fate of success or failure. From a macro level viewpoint, the emergence of business ecosystem is the result of the continuous evolution of business forms, from linear type towards a more complex networked type. At a micro level, for an ecosystem to emerge in a given industry, it involves strategic design and appropriate execution. Furthermore, a set of critical elements need to be in the right place for a business ecosystem to emerge, which including: prerequisite conditions for ecosystem to emerge, external environmental and resource, shared vision, leadership of the ecosystem, common platform, mechanisms of the ecosystem, ecosystem healthiness, and IT infrastructure. The study further suggests that the emergence of business ecosystem as a new business form is not out of luck or probability. It is a natural path that under governance of the evolution forces existing in the social-economic contexts, just as the evolution of all the living creatures in the natural environment. For this broader perspective, the emergence of ecosystem is inevitable due to the social-economic and technological driving forces.

Abstract:
Exporting is one of the most commonly used modes of international business operations and significant option to all sizes of companies considering foreign market penetration. As many cross-national policy makers encourages countries to open their trade barriers for free product trade, the global environment has gradually shifted in favor of using exporting as a foreign business operation mode. This research focuses on product exportation and distinguishes it from service exports whereas differences may occur. The research contains a pre-assumption that the process of product exportation in business-to-business markets can be managed with universally best practices and the process for efficient exporting management can be found and described.

Abstract:
This study examined the extent to which small businesses, with an international focus, are employing formaI business planning techniques and the extent to which such techniques contribute to the success of these businesses. The study was based on the hypothesis that small business success is associated with formal business planning. Indicators of both formal business planning, the independent variable, and small business success, the dependent variable, were developed. Survey research was conducted to generate and analyze data gathered from one hundred business owners/operators of small businesses, with an international focus, located within the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). A five-page questionnaire was developed and a survey analysis grid was designed. The researcher found that those businesses practicing formal business planning techniques were more successful than those not employing them. The conclusions drawn from these findings suggest that formal business planning contributes to the success of small businesses with an international focus.

Abstract:

Negotiations are a frequent part of international business. Parties involved in a negotiation face different problems in reaching a successful outcome. When the parties have different cultural backgrounds the faced problems become more complex.

The study provides for an understanding of the negotiation and influencing factors in head office subsidiary relationship. The relationship is complex since the head office and the regional subsidiaries have different cultural backgrounds. One case study is performed between a global Dutch company and two of their local subsidiaries in Japan and Korea. A framework for the analysis is developed and the factors that influence the negotiation are identified. The data were compiled from interviews from the Dutch side.

The study reveals that the negotiation between the head office and their subsidiaries is complex. Culture is not the only barrier but the cultural awareness becomes critical. Other major influences between the head office and the subsidiaries are the organisation itself, status of the atmosphere and the relationship.

Abstract:
This dissertation provides a synthesis of the academic research in international business with the key areas of overlap in entrepreneurship research. The geographical application is to Taiwan. The key objectives of the research are twofold. Firstly, to show the importance of creating an interdisciplinary analysis combining international business and entrepreneurship; there has been very little academic research done in the area seeing entrepreneurship through the frameworks of international business research. Secondly, to show that the business success of Taiwanese entrepreneurs and companies can provide many insights for researchers in the fields of international business and entrepreneurship; a key driver of this success is the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park (HSIP), which is a technology district, cluster created by the Taiwanese government in collaboration with banking and industries in 1980. Relative to Japan and Korean business research, Taiwan has been relatively neglected in international business research. Chapter1 provides an introduction to the key research to the key research objectives of the dissertation. Chapter 2 provides an academic literature review of entrepreneurship, showing the key strands of research from economics, management and organisation theory. Chapters 3 and 4 are the key theoretical synthesis chapters: they focus on the issues of technology and knowledge assets, and how they help to combine the academic research of international business and entrepreneurship. Chapter 5 is an analysis of the Taiwanese business system, and how it was conducive to entrepreneurship and the creation of successful global businesses. Chapter 6 is an analysis of the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park and its role in Taiwanese technology and entrepreneurship. Chapter 7 is an analysis of 3 case studies of successful Taiwanese technology entrepreneurs. Chapter 8 is a conclusion to the dissertation.

Raman, Manoj. "Development and international business : an application to India." Thesis, City University London, 1999. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/7746/.

Full text
Abstract:
The issue of development in emerging markets has moved on from the polarized debates along ideological lines about the state vs. markets, to focusing mainly on economic indicators. Increasingly, as knowledge becomes the main focus of development, it is acknowledged that the state can play a positive role in promoting its growth. To try and analyse these developments, it is imperative that we appreciate the role of differing business systems that impose constraints on development, especially in influencing capital allocation in the system. The emergence of cybercities in impoverished developing countries like India need to be analysed to appreciate the factors that will influence the trends in development - the success of such cities can be attributed to the positive role played by the state and the clustering of software industries around centres of knowledge. We develop frameworks to analyse to compare the existing forms of corporate governance, and a third system for emerging economies such as Asia or Europe. We also develop frameworks to analyse market exchange and alternative frameworks from modern and pre-modern societies, in order to understand the nature of exchange in intangible and inalienable assets such as knowledge. We apply these frameworks to Indian software industry to give us an insight into how India has managed to emerge as a significant player in the software industry. We conclude that the political embeddedness of the various institutions and organisations are playing a critical role in shaping its business systems which is at the crossroads between a pluralist shareholder and corporatist stakeholder system. Also, these factors are forcing the Indian software industry to focus on the lower end of the value chain.
