Abstract:
This thesis argues that women were seminal to the development of interior design as a discipline and profession in Sydney, Australia. Covering the period from the 1920s to the 1960s, this study identifies Thea Proctor, Nora McDougall, Margaret Lord, Phyllis Shillito and Mary White as foundational leaders who progressively advanced interior design in Sydney through individual and collective understandings of design. Focussing on their contributions to this development, this study explains complex interrelationships between women and modernity in interior design. This emergence of the discipline and profession in Sydney situates the initiatives of these five women at a transitional phase of the field???s global development when ???interior decoration??? is challenged by modern attitudes and artistic theories of ???design???. Working as individuals, Proctor and her successors advance the profession???previously characterised as a ???natural??? pursuit for women of ???taste??? and ???style??????by their artistic, rational and practical approaches to interior design. At a time when no distinct discipline exists in Sydney, the women offer instruction and forge new directions by reformulating previous overseas traditions: incorporating a wide-range of aesthetic and theoretical conceptions of design, demonstrating common and different approaches to practice, and integrating changes in requisite knowledge and skills in response to their times. The women???s programs are conventional and progressive, common and diverse, universal and particular in content and meaning. Working within a variety of settings, the women importantly establish professional jurisdiction situating interior design in a modernist context. Significantly, their contributions challenge past readings that have diminished the early women of interior design, and at the same time, embody all the conflicts, ruptures, paradoxes and contradictions that are cental to modernity. This research redresses the lack of institutional history of interior design in Sydney and links theories of modernism and modernity to issues of gender and profession to explain the women???s significant contributions to interior design at a critical juncture of the field???s development. As such, their stories and legacy of design in Sydney contribute to a wider picture of women and modernity in interior design.

Abstract:
Immersive environments are a big part of videogames. With hardware being more capable thanever of displaying millions of triangles at once boththe capability and demand of more content in anenvironment increases. This puts more strain onlevel designers who have to spend more time perscene to make everything meet the constantly increasingvisual standards. Being able to procedurallydecorate any environment in such a fashionthat it follows the hand-made hero scenes of thegame becomes an important way to save time andmoney better spent elsewhere in the project. This thesis investigates a hierarchical method ofprocedurally generating objects inside an environment. This was accomplished by creating an artifactto analyze the feasibility of efficiently hierarchicallydecorating environments at run-time ofa video game. Though focusing on furniture anddecorative objects of rooms the system can also beused to procedurally place game related content.

Abstract:
This creative project is a brief study of clay tile surface decoration, using commercial 4" x 4" and 6" x 6" tiles, as well as handmade slab-rolled and slumped molded forms. The exploration of surface decoration was based on historical research. An attempt was made to bring these findings into a contemporary personal statement. In my research I found a rich and varied history of clay tiles and their functional as well as decorative uses. Historically, tiles have been used on floors, walls, pillars, ceilings, pathways, rooftops, doorways, and fireplaces in architectural structures. In this project I have explored the use of clay tiles as decorative and functional elements for a countertop and tabletop, and as decorative elements of freestanding objects (boxes). I have also experimented with a non-traditional approach of tile making, using traditional materials, by changing the tiles' two-dimensional surface to a three-dimensional form.

Allen, Joanne. "Choir stalls in Venice and northern Italy : furniture, ritual and space in the Renaissance church interior." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2009. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3603/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to re-establish the significance of choir stalls in Venice and northern Italy and seeks to place stalls in their artistic, liturgical and spatial context. Although now situated in remote locations in the church, stalls were once highly prized items of furniture and considered to be praiseworthy artistic structures in their own right. As the location for religious ritual, the elevated status of the choir area was reflected in the detailed and sophisticated design of its wooden furniture. Through an analysis of visual and documentary material, stalls will be brought to the fore to consider broader questions. What can documents reveal about Renaissance workshop practices and the relationship between craftsmen and patrons? How did the form of stalls reflect their use in religious ritual and the organisation of sacred space? How did choir furniture develop as an independent medium within the artistic context of the Renaissance church interior? Four main topics will be considered in the first four chapters: the visual history of stalls; the contracting procedure; the use of stalls in liturgical practices; and changes to choir placement. Chapter One reconstructs the stylistic history of north-Italian choir stalls from the fourteenth to early sixteenth centuries and contains an excursus on the development and meaning of intarsia iconography. Chapter Two focuses on choir contracts, which confirm that choir furniture was a considerable investment and a potential source of rivalry between church communities Chapter Three moves the focus away from stalls as material objects to their role in liturgical practices. An excursus on the established use of misericords in Carthusian liturgy will demonstrate the close interaction between form and function in stall design, and places Italian stalls in the context of their European counterparts. The placement of choirs in the church interior will be examined in Chapter Four using case studies of choir placement in different secular and religious houses, in particular the Franciscan Observants, Franciscan Conventuals and the Dominicans. Although changes in choir placement are often associated with liturgical reforms implemented by the Council of Trent, church renovations in fact occurred well before this period. Two Venetian case studies demonstrate the value of examining individual choir precincts in their original stylistic and spatial context. Chapter Five focuses on stalls in the Benedictine nuns’ church of San Zaccaria in Venice, completed by the Cozzi workshop in 1464. The choir precinct in the Frari in Venice is amongst the best-preserved choir precincts in Italy and is discussed in detail in Chapter Six; the circumstances of its construction are closely related to new choir furniture in the Santo in Padua. Specific terminology is explained and collated in the Glossary and an Appendix contains transcriptions and translations of significant documents.

Abstract:
This paper explores the relationship between place in installation art and its relevance to the practice of placemaking in a hospital setting. The discussion draws on phenomenology, psychodynamic theory and contemporary art, in particular the author's art experience of places, their formal qualities and potential meanings, along with, an examination of what creates an embodied sense of being contained at home ( emotionally and physically). Some of the questions posed for discussion include; what is it about places that becomes inherent to memory and shapes its form? How do places impact on what we do there and who we are? Is place more significant in memory for a young child or someone in a vulnerable state of being (as in the hospital setting)? Process issues, along with physical outcomes, in installations and in the hospital projects are discussed.

Bushana, Meera N. "The relationship between windows and interior design preferences in office spaces: an exploratory study." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44705.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between windows and interior design preferences in enclosed office spaces. The research sample consisted of forty executives from NASA. Subjects were asked to plan the interior design of an executive office space (simulated with a scale model) in response to four different window types and then asked to choose one of the four window types for the space. Subjects' reactions were observed and questioned throughout the experiment, to study the relation between windows and interior design preferences. Window functions and configurations, subjects' age, sex, country of origin, activity, and interaction levels were investigated as independent variables influencing the dependent variable perception of the relation between windows and interior design preferences. The data was analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and inâ depth theoretical analysis of individual responses.

Subjects' consciousness of the relation between windows and interior design preferences increased as activity and interaction levels increased. Window configurations and functions influenced interior· design preferences, especially furniture arrangement and color selection preferences. Interior design preferences influenced the choice of a window type to a considerable extent, perhaps as much as view and daylight. An overview of the study indicates that windows and interior design preferences are parts of a cyclic inter-relationship where each factor influences the other and therefore should each be considered with equal importance by both architects and interior designers.

Abstract:
This study explores how creative practitioners work and how interior spaces can be differently represented across magazines of different backgrounds and target readerships. This study produces an analysis of the style and character of the published representations of interior spaces. It explores the modes carefully selected by practitioners in order to construct visual texts - to successfully address their distinctive target readerships. As part of this analysis, and as a central element of the work, the thesis develops a way of looking at images. This study develops and demonstrates a method based on content analysis and presents a detailed coding form and protocol, for the detailed analysis of visual texts. This research produces an analytical tool to capture the atmosphere and dynamic of the image and the variations of interior space, rather than just the content of the image as content analysis normally does. This study draws on material from comparative analysis of three contemporary magazines (Wallpaper, Elle Decoration and Ideal Home) during the years 1997-2006. In order to explore the visual texts of these magazines I chose to combine quantitative and qualitative methods. From quantitative methods I selected content analysis and developed it in so far as to explore in depth the texts of the magazines. From qualitative methods I selected fieldwork observations collected in four London-based home magazines' editorial offices, and selective elements from diverse fields such as semiotics and visual theories, sociology, anthropology, advertising and media studies. This research suggests that magazines promote different representations of interior spaces depending on their background and target readership. Features aiming at an elite, very upmarket readership adopt an aesthetic approach and produce minimal, unrealistic and design-focused spaces, often with an entertaining or surreal twist; however, frequently these depictions look lifeless and self-centred. As we move towards more downmarket readerships, the representations of interior spaces become more realistic, practical and informative and less experimental; these spaces are lively, warm and human and often appeal to their readers' senses, memories and emotions; these are spaces that are designed to promote, cultivate and celebrate human relationships. 2

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Interior Design))--Cape Technikon, 1993.
The origins of the research activities which constitute this dissertation can be traced to a proposal in 1991 to write a history assignment on the retrospective influence of interior design in the factory environment. A subsequent search for relevant information proved largely unsuccessful, resulting in the temporary suspension of further investigations into the topic. However, these enquiries provoked a piquant interest in the feasibility of applying interior design principles in the factory environment. The challenge presented by the lack of reference to the role of interior design in the factory environment, in conjunction with a dearth of literature pertinent to the history of industrial architecture, served as impetus for the background investigation which led to a successful proposal that my National Higher Diploma be based on the practical design of factory interiors.

Abstract:
Pedilanthus palmeri Millsp. was evaluated as a potential interior landscaping plant. The optimal propagation technique, production and post-production light requirements, growth regulator response and photoperiod requirement were analyzed. Cuttings were successfully rooted within five weeks after treatment with aqueous solutions of IBA. Root fresh weight increased from 0.58 g with 0 mg·liter⁻¹ IBA to 1.12 g with 6736 mg·liter⁻¹ IBA. No difference in leaf length, width or thickness, plant height or node number was found between plants grown under 77% and 88% shade. Plants moved to a low light interior environment continued to grow and new, thin leaves replaced abscised leaves. The optimum concentration of the growth retardant Bonzi (paclobutrazol), 0.125 g ai per pot, caused a 46% reduction in shoot height. Apical pinching and 500 mg·liter-1 BA increased branch number 3.8-fold. Pedilanthus palmeri is a short day plant. Flowering occurred in the 8 and 10 hour light treatments but not in the longer photoperiods.

Abstract:
This thesis gives a voice to the call for a holistic approach to the preservation of commercial and particularly domestic architecture. Interior architecture is an important piece of the whole in need of consideration. Arts and Crafts interiors in the state of Indiana are considered in reference to this fact and the case studies chosen exemplify the connection between cultural history and the interior architecture and design. The Arts and Crafts Movement's philosophy worked to integrate the entire design with the surrounding site. The interior was the focus of the synthesized design and it is this emphasis that must be captured. The Midwest played an important role in the development of the Arts and Crafts Movement and central Indiana's interior residential architecture gives evidence to the movement's influential philosophy as well as social changes in the early twentieth century. An introduction to the Arts and Crafts Movement briefly discussing its history in England and the United States is provided as well as a discussion of the Movement's philosophy. Following the history is a chapter concerned with the Arts and Crafts influence in Indiana. Manufacturers and retailers are identified as well as products marketed. Architects and artisans are discussed. Next, a chapter identifies significant interior elements, furnishings, finishes and floor plans. Finally, four case studies are examined ranging from a self-built bungalow to an architect-designed estate. Floor plans, architectural features, and finishes are covered.

People increase demand of interior design and adornment with higher living standard. Investigation on people’s demand deeply, there are many problems, such as out of customers’ expectation, delay of project, difficulty of operating expansion. If interior design and decoration have combination with industrial management tools, these services could be commercialized with better profits and growth. First, interior design is a service of design with four characteristics, which are not able to be consistent because of expensive charges on customization, long design time, cognitive gap between designer and owners, and unpractical design. Second, previous researchers studied customized decoration engineering from project management viewpoint; they didn’t focus on managing engineering details and quality from production angle. This research analyzes lacks of engineering management with cases, and it will be scientific improvement in the future. The objective of this study is to investigate problems on interior design and decoration, which are acted design and construction from commercialization angle to improve qualities and benefits. 1. From literature review, work experiences and surveys of interior design and decoration, to find out general categories, service types, and lacks of chain brand’s service flow. 2. To generalize service of interior design and lacks of decoration engineering through cases. 3. To build system of interior design service and decoration engineering commercialization: interior design service with minimized variation, shortened time, lower price; decoration engineering commercialization with standardization, concretization, cost down, quality consistence, and stabilized delivery. 4. With design concerns of commercialization, to satisfy demand of customer and to improve lacks of interior design and decoration engineering. 5. Through standardized project management and lean production skills, to reduce disadvantages of interior design product. 6. To improve quality of interior design and decoration product with monitoring commercialized quality. 7. For customers loyalty and profits enhancement, to satisfy customers and to achieve service quality, product quality and reasonable price with above system and skills. After building commercialization system, this research will prove feasibility of this system, making academic and industrial contribution.

Abstract In 1996, the Ministry of the Interior announced “Interior Decoration Examination Code” to authorize the local governments to formulate the regulations of management and examination of interior decoration, in order to have the mandatory examination of interior decoration in public buildings. But there are many obstacles and arguments on the examination of interior decoration because of this new code. Among the problems, the examination of constructed interior decoration in public buildings has become a unique issue aggravating the governing section in the government since there is no clarified regulations and accordance on constructed interior decoration n the code. In other words, the above obstacle has made the examination policy ineffective. Yet the problem is not widely noticed. To ameliorate the ineffectiveness of the code and to serve as a reference for its future revision by the government, it is the purpose of this research to inquire into draft supplementary regulations for the existing code. The research is to be conducted in two phases. First, it is important to confer on administration regulations and related rules, and on the other hand, to study present examination process and rules on interior decoration, in order to collect critical issues to these regulations. Second, based on the information collected, through consulting with experts, as well as, explain appends from the governing bodies to help determine the feasible alternatives. Through repetitive evaluation process, this research will formulate the suggestive solution of administration on buildings in use, and the final draft of the “Supplementary Regulations of Interior Decoration Examination for Buildings with Constructed Inter Decoration” can be produced.

The purpose of this study was to discuss the current requirements for interior design and decoration professional manpower in the yacht-building industry, in order to analyze the gap between industry practice and personnel cultivated through educational training. By means of in-depth interviews and the distribution of questionnaires to yacht company professional technicians and specialists who participate in industry-university collaborations, this study attempted to understand the gap between educational training course management and the actual requirements of the workplace. This study found that Taiwan has the advantage of not only skilled handicraft, but also high industry adaptability, with high levels of cooperation that make the local industry a significant presence within the global yacht market. However, in terms of interior design and decoration, Taiwan has never been able to discard the role of OEM. Poor working environments discourage young people from joining the industry, causing significant shortages in manpower at present. Educational institutions are making considerable efforts at training new personnel, and it is suggested that institutions should place emphasis on the diversification of core coursework, the gaining of professional experience, as well as detailed planning for and implementation of the length, time, content and appraisal system of internship training. It is hoped that a professional yacht-building appraisal system be established to enable professional workers’ ease and adaptability in the design process, to increase individual competitiveness and propel the economic benefits of yacht production.

In this research, three commercial products of solid wood floorings, three types of wood-based composite panels, and two types of wood substrates were involved. To explore the controls moisture of adsorption/desorptionperformances of the wooden specimens, the research compared the surface treatments that were coated and un-coated by adjusted the temperature and humidity of the environment. One interior design was chosen as a case. According to the commonly used interior decoration techniques, some appropriate building materials and wood flooring decorations were chosen to record their adjustment changes of temperature/humidity in a certain stage before and after the decoration process. At the same time, the indoor comfort benefits have to analyze for consumers and interior designers, as a reference for interior decoration at the point of flooring material selection. The main conclusions of this study are summarized as follows: 1. The solid wood flooring that used in the research, the adjustment moisture of adsorption/desorptionbalance was not obvious in the various of humidity conditions. However, the uncoated surface treatment’s ability was slightlyhigher than the coated surface. Also the solid wood flooring materials had a better adsorption/desorptionbalance ability than the wood-based composite panels floorings. The among of man-made flooring specimens, the surface of teak sheet were better than the block of laminate hard plastic sheet, but by the substrate of the adsorption/ desorptioneffect were less obvious. 2. Theuncoated solid wood flooring materials adsorption/ desorptionperformance were obtained better than the already coated solid wood flooring or veneer floor coverings. Therefore, the interior environment laying solid wood flooring and with the uncoated treatment would be the best way to control indoor humidity. 3. The wooden flooring materialcould be used in a high humidity environment with the rising temperature. The adsorption/ desorption efficiency of the materials were better in the uncoated solid wood flooring rather than the already coated solid wood flooring or veneer floor coverings, and were also better than artificial flooring. 4. According to the practical interior design case’s planning and the results, laying plywood-based substrate and the solid teakflooring, were better methods for interior environment to adjust the temperature and humidity efficiency.

The refurbishment, under the current situation of great supply of newly developed housing market and the demand of good living standard quality improvement domestically, has become a very common phenomenon in Taiwan. On the other hand, through out the development of construction engineering for couple of decades, some related construction management and construction performance management research have been applied to this industry. For refurbishment field in Taiwan, on the contrary, is still very insufficient in terms of the research of construction performance management. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to discuss “construction management model”, “construction management characteristics”, “construction management problem and cause” and “the relationship between construction management model and construction management performance” of the refurbishment from the point of the management’s view. Furthermore, I wish to provide the suggestion related to construction management for the management people of refurbishment.

In addition to the need to effectively control user safety and proper use of decorative materials in public buildings, “Building Interior Decoration Examination Regulations” is issued to govern the practice as well as the practitioners of interior design profession. But in spite of the fact that public safety is somewhat promoted, the regulations have evoked many dubious aspects to professional interior design practices. That is, in many cases, regulations are interpreted into different directions, which hinder official examination processes and cause confusion to designers. Because of this, the safety control policy for interior decoration is not fully executed. Thus, it is necessary to scrutinize these regulations and clarify that which causes confusions. This study conducts such a scrutiny in terms of 1.drafting standards, 2.official examination processes, and 3.regulations. Under each category, two dubious aspects are examined and discussed. They include 1.professional jargons, and 2.problems relevant to the regulations. To achieve thoroughness in the discussion, practical cases are adopted for a three-step analysis by this study and the experts being consulted. First, relevant issues are discussed from the point of view of building codes, second, practitioners are consulted for additional comparison and induciton of the issues, and third, professional expertise from the governing agency are collected to finalize a final statement. This study concludes with a collection of amendments to some regulations.

Abstract Nowadays, it is a common place that no matter if one is in a house or a room of commercial spaces, one’s demand for exquisite lighting ambiance is sophisticatedly escalated. In professional terms, such a demand is achievable, at least, but not the least, through meticulous measurement mechanisms of that pertinent to the reflection attributes of light beams, as well as illumination and luminance parameters of interior decoration materials. However, this is only hypothetical and ironically controversial to the theories of relevant literature. To come to a firm grasp of these attributes and parameters, and at the same time, to conceive its portablility, this stury conducted a series of comparative experiments to scrutinize those reflectance measurement mechanisms postulated by theoretitians and that established by this research. Several measurement mechanisms are established first, to testify esisting theories. With portability and variation of observation conditions in mind, reflectance measurement constituent parts are all built-in small wooden boxes, including light meter, incandescent light source. Reliability of measurement is tested using a combination surface textures of decoration materials. The same test procedures are repeated in the second stage of the experiment, via sophisticated lab apparatuses, includeing photo-colorimeter and spectra-colorimeter, and others are employed. After painstakingly test of measurement data, it is found finally, that spectra-colorimeter reveals the most reliable and plausible result. This gave rise to the following findings: i. the portable reflectance measurement apparatus require a built-in light source to emit a small yet sufficient amount of light beams on test materials. ii. aside from the light beams reaching the surface of test mateials, the remainder of light beams ought to be absorbed in the apparatus to avoide additional reflectance light interference. iii. a built-in intergration-sphere is essential for the complete collection of light beams reflected from the surface of test materials. iv. external light soureces ought to be excluded to carry out an acceptable measurement condition. v. it is recommended that the measurement be completed within a matter of seconds or less. vi. a “reflectance standard” of known reflectance ratio is a standard annex to the measurement apparatus. vii. to decipher measurement data, the apparatus user need to be knowledgeable of spectral distribution analysis steps. viii. the analysis involves calculus calculation techniques.

Most of the domestic studies regarding interior decoration research are focused on how to introduce the interior decoration industry towards electronic, operation and management, fire safety, design and application of construction methods and materials, and discussion of laws and regulations or derivative disputes. However, few studies have discussed potential accidents and disputes caused by poor interior decoration. The occurrence of accidents and disputes by interior decoration often results to financial loss and emotional distress to the involved party, which may even cause injuries and casualties if the situation was serious. Among them, construction disputes sometimes happen because the preparations in demolition operations usually do not receive attention. Otherwise, improper disposal may cause pipeline blockage. Even worse, casualties may occur due to improper construction. Based on the above reasons, the study applied literature review, induction, case study and expert interview to summarize the operation directions for interior decoration and demolition. It is hoped that this study may complement the current laws and regulations for reducing accidents and disputes among interior decoration.

In recent years, the design requirement of people is not only satisfied with practicability, but the pursue beauty and atmosphere. People are more and more in the pursuit of the "wonderful life",in their own space. That contain a sense of beauty, characteristic lifestyle, decorative arts, and so on. By using furniture, decorative lighting, fabrics, decorative paintings, floriculture, and the other garnitures to decorate the interior space and to satisfy the users. This work which can bring special experience for the users from vision to touch, be named "Interior Decoration". The interior decoration industry is in its infancy, and the professional works on interior decoration are limited. In order to understand the name and definition of the term " Interior Decoration ", how to express the "interior decoration style", this study sorts out the domestic and foreign names of soft design words, the development of interior decoration, the relationship between interior decoration and interior design. After discussing the scope of work and the content of the work involved in the interior decoration, and analyzing the interior decoration style, classification, and composition of the interior decoration, the "modern Chinese style" interior decoration was carried out in actual interior decoration cases. The study found that "interior decoration" is a derivative of "architectural", "interior" and "interior finishing" designs. The names of the products are different due to differences in work content. The integration of "Interior decoration" and "interior finishing" is the whole of interior design. "Interior decoration style" is a comprehensive indoor pattern, moving line arrangement, tone adjustment, furniture furnishings, art collocation, with different symbolic elements with features, symbols, and styles, plus lighting, color, material, texture, smell, etc. The auxiliary factors are not only determined by the individual taste of the owner, but also by the designer''s personal subjective cognition.
