Abstract:
This article describes an interface between political theory and cultural studies, on that emerged with particular force and clarity in the work of American political theorists writing at the end of the twentieth century. It discusses the methodological contributions that resulted from this interface and analyses academic practices of political theory and cultural studies within national institutional histories. It suggests that the possibilities initially opened up by interfacial work need to be brought together into an integrated account of contemporary state power within the global capitalist economy.

Abstract:
Many of the distinctive and useful phenomena of soft matter come from its interaction with interfaces. Examples are the peeling of a strip of adhesive tape or the coating of a surface or the curling of a fibre via capillary forces or the electrically driven ow along a microchannel, or the collapse of a porous sponge. These interfacial phenomena are distinct from the intrinsic behaviour of a soft material like a gel or a microemulsion. Yet many forms of interfacial phenomena can be understood via common principles valid for many forms of soft matter. Our goal in organizing this school was to give students a grasp of these common principles and their many ramifications and possibilities. The school comprised over fifty 90-minute lectures over four weeks in July 2013. Four four-lecture courses by Howard Stone, Michael Cates, David Nelson, and L. Mahadevan served as an anchor for the program. A number of shorter courses and seminars rounded out the school. This volume presents lecture notes prepared by the speakers and submitted for publication after the school. The lectures are grouped under two main themes: Hydrodynamics and interfaces, and Soft matter.

Abstract:
The chapter investigates aspects of variation in Old English modals with respect to functional status, modal base, modal force, and event realization under the modals in the actual world. The main goal is to view—in tandem, rather than in isolation—aspects of variation that are of interest at the syntax–semantics interface. The chapter focuses on three modals, the cognates of ‘can,’ ‘may,’ and ‘must,’ which show the full range of variation available in the categories investigated. The role of circumstantial modality in the diachronic development is underlined. It is furthermore argued that the modals of the period occupy a structural position in the aspectual domain. Evidence for functional status includes ellipsis, topicalization, and the complementary distribution with the aspectual prefix ge-.

Abstract:
In The Years, Woolf foregrounds the private house as materialised geography of multiple force fields of change and conservatism. The house constitutes the interface between the biological necessities of embodied creatures and the regulatory, reiterative codes of gender and class that produce identity. Woolf attends to a moment in the 1930s when large scale public provision of housing and the necessary infrastructure of utilities extended the public terrain into what had previously been the private domain. The potential convergence of class values and life style, brought about by extension of plumbing and wiring, however, came into conflict with demand for home-owning consumerism and privacy. Woolf brings into visibility and audibility the common life of London streets and the shared realm of the physical world in opposition to the regulated individualism sheltered in the family house.

Abstract:
With both the growing importance of integrating studies of air-sea interaction and the interest in the general problem of global warming, the appearance of the second edition of this popular text is especially welcome. Thoroughly updated and revised, the authors have retained the accessible, comprehensive expository style that distinguished the earlier edition. Topics include the state of matter near the interface, radiation, surface wind waves, turbulent transfer near the interface, the planetary boundary layer, atmospherically-forced perturbations in the oceans, and large-scale forcing by sea surface buoyancy fluxes. This book will be welcomed by students and professionals in meteorology, physical oceanography, physics and ocean engineering.
