Abstract:
Forensic dentistry dates back more than 200 years. Yet Oscar Amoedo, a Cuban-born dentist, is considered the father of forensic dentistry. He emphasized the dentists’ role in humans’ identification and laid down the general principles of dental identification in his dissertation in 1989. Dental experts must have interdisciplinary knowledge to do his or her job. From the teeth development through the type of materials of various restorations and the appearance of specific diseases, he/she has to consider the entire oral cavity. As it happens today, for the last 60-70 years too, the victim’s dentist testified the positive match by the dental identification. Nowadays, there are available plaster models, paper or digital based patient records, x-rays to support forensic dentistry. In the future, digital technology will make identification even faster and more accurate, and based on the patients’ 3D digital models, CBCT images, or palate samples, artificial intelligence (AI) guided computers will be making identifications even without any human assistance.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Aim This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of interdisciplinary work between dentistry and physiotherapy as well as to determine the temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients’ treatment plan. Materials and methods The sample consisted of 300 patient records from the ATM service (Faculty of Dentistry, Federal University of Juiz de Fora) file. Three factors were analyzed: (1) Therapy, which were transcribed physical therapy modalities used; 2) If there were any guidelines or procedures for home exercises without the professionals presence; 3) the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) palpation pain rates, transferred to a pain level measurements table according to visual analog scale (VAS). The Chi-square test was applied for statistical analysis with a significance level p ≤ 0.05. Results All physiotherapy modalities used separately or mixed contributed to TMJ pain relief. Guidelines for physical therapy at home proved to be very useful to pain decreasing. Conclusion It was concluded that the effectiveness of an interdisciplinary work in dentistry and physiotherapy treatments for TMD has been properly verified. It is essential to have an interdisciplinary treatment plan, where the physical therapy helps the pain relief and dentistry treats the disorders related to the stomatognathic system. Clinical significance The interdisciplinary work between dentistry and physiotherapy is more effective in TMD treatment. How to cite this article de Toledo EG Jr, Silva DP, de Toledo JA, Salgado IO. Abstract:
Introduction: Forensic Dentistry is an area of Dentistry related to Law. Among its goals is the execution of human identification, defined as the process of determining the person’s identity. The forensic dentist uses, in this process, ante-mortem records and data for comparison with post-mortem information obtained from the examination of the body. Objective: To describe the process of identification of a charred corpse by using dental records. Case report: The human material remained from a charred corpse was sent to an anthropological and dental analysis for identification purposes. This employed the analysis of the corpse examination and odontological records. Conclusion: The identification of the victim in this case points out to the need of an interdisciplinary work between Forensic Medicine and Dentistry in situations which other routine identification processes cannot be applied, highlighting the importance of the Forensic dentist for the final solution of the case.

Abstract:
Introduction: Aesthetics play a major role in the favorable outcome of any dental-related treatment. It provides patient satisfaction, boosts dentist’ confidence and achieves a long-term favorable therapeutic prognosis. These results cannot be achieved single-handedly but through a combination of interdisciplinary skills and approaches of various fields of dentistry. A tooth loss is often accompanied by a deformity of the alveolar ridge leading to a compromised esthetic and functional outcome. Therefore, various grafting procedures could be considered for the reformation and reconstruction of the deficient alveolar ridges. This case report discusses an approach for correction of a Siebert’s class III alveolar ridge defect in the anterior mandibular region prior to the placement of fixed partial denture in order to establish better esthetic and functional outcome. Case Report: A 42-year-old male patient reported to the Outpatient Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology, at D.Y. Patil School of Dentistry, Navi Mumbai with a chief complaint of missing lower front teeth since 6 months. The edentulous space appeared asymptomatic and normal. The medical history obtained was non-contributory. The missing tooth was 41. Conclusion: Localized alveolar ridge defects may create physiological and pathological problems. Correction of a localized ridge defect with soft tissue augmentation is a promising therapeutic measure in a fixed prosthodontic therapy. It not only improves the mucogingival aesthetics of the pontic region, especially in the anterior segments of maxilla/mandible but also prevents further phonetic & functional problems.

Abstract:
The aim of our work was to highlight the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in the study of pediatric surgical dentistry. The introduction of the Standard of Higher Education in Specialty 221 “Dentistry” Field of Knowledge 22 “Health Care” for the second (master’s) level of higher education has allowed us to revise and improve a number of provisions regarding the study of pediatric surgical dentistry. First of all, the updated educational-professional program 221- “Dentistry” outlines the list of competencies and learning outcomes in the discipline “Pediatric Surgical Dentistry” and clearly defines the prerequisites on which the study of pediatric surgical dentistry is based. In the study of pediatric surgical dentistry, namely issues related to inflammatory processes of the maxillofacial area, attention should be paid to the etiology and pathogenesis of acute and chronic inflammatory odontogenic processes directly in the age aspect. At the same time, it is important to emphasize the need for preventive dental measures, timely therapeutic intervention, especially during the eruption of permanent teeth and urgent radical treatment to prevent complications. In addition, an important component in the study of this topic are issues related to the age of the formation of organs and systems of the child, the tendency to hyperergic reactions and generalization of the inflammatory process, the factor of minimal anti-inflammatory potential. The presented methodological approach in terms of practical application of interdisciplinary links in the study of pediatric surgical dentistry, according to our observations allowed to increase the level of knowledge within the professional competence of students with a score of “5” from 20% in IV year to 68% V year. Thus, the list of components of the educational process analyzed in this paper creates a promising direction for further improvement of teaching methods at the Department of Pediatric Surgical Dentistry.

Abstract:
Abstract Dentistry, is one of the intensively and rapidly growing branches of medicine. This prompts dentists to take an interdisciplinary approach to their patients. Thus, the dentist, being a general practitioner, can make significant contributions to the early diagnosis of systemic disease and the faster implementation of appropriate treatment. In view of the aforementioned, we undertook research on the relationship of pathological changes observed in the oral cavity with diseases of the connective tissue system. Collagenosis is a chronic autoimmune disease initiated by many factors, among which the genetic factor and viral infections are mentioned. The changes observed in the oral cavity may be a picture of the disease, a complication of the disease or a side effect of the treatment. The aim of the study is, thus, too present the pathological changes in the oral cavity which often accompany collagenosis, and to discuss the risk factors of connective tissue system diseases and methods of dental treatment.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Smile is an integral part of dentistry. Patients come with the prime aim of achieving esthetics. The dentist may preserve or alter the relationships of the visible components of the oral region to give the desired esthetic result. But, it is our responsibility to attain this result through a scientifically based and thoroughly planned treatment. The appearance of gingival tissue surrounding the teeth plays an important role in the esthetics of anterior region. Abnormities in symmetry and contour can significantly affect the harmonious appearance of natural or prosthetic dentition. There are a variety of cases of teeth wear, wherein interdisciplinary intervention is essential. Also the factor causing severe wear of natural teeth must be identified and eliminated, or reduced before attempting restorative treatment to improve long-term prognosis of restorative treatment. This article deals with a case of anterior teeth wear, stressing upon diagnosis, treatment planning and progression of treatment with regards to perio-prostho esthetics. Abstract:
Introduction. It is known that patients primarily come to general practitioners asking for help with oral disease. Although the matter falls out of the frame of `traditional` medical practice, ethical guidance suggests that doctors should examine one`s oral cavity with the aim of recognizing symptoms which treatment could improve the quality of oral and general health leading to an early discovery of potentially severe diseases. The aim was to examine the habits and attitudes of medical students and graduates who are interns related to oral health care, their knowledge of oral cavity diseases and systematic diseases with symptoms manifested in oral cavity, as well as their knowledge of patients who are at risk from dental interventions. Material and methods. The survey was conducted on the sample of 100 subjects. The questionnaire consisted of 16 questions. The results were collected and statistically analyzed. Results. The majority of subjects go to the dentist only after the toothache starts. Although 84% of medical students make sure to check oral cavity while taking medical history, more than half of the examined medical students would not send the patient to dentist for consultation. Every tenth student was not able to state other local disease of oral cavity apart from tooth decay. Even 6% of examined students classified the tooth decay as an aesthetic problem. Half of examined students considered their study program needed course in the field of dentistry. Conclusion. Medical students are not well informed about the field of oral hygiene and pathology of oral cavity. Interdisciplinary cooperation of General Practitioners and Dentists is important.

Abstract:
Demographic changes with an increasingly higher proportion of older adults worldwide and an epidemiologic transition resulting in more teeth retained and higher demand and expectations set up new scenarios for the oral health of the older population. Thus, geriatric dentistry must be reconfigured, transitioning from the traditional focus on prosthesis to a more holistic discipline, actively incorporating geriatric and gerontologic aspects. We describe some situations that provide the rationale for a new conceptual framework for the advancement of geriatric dentistry as a clinical specialty. On the basis of scientific evidence and our academic experience, we propose 4 concepts that should steer the discipline during the following years and become its structural pillars: minimal intervention dentistry, oral functionality, patient-centered care, and interdisciplinary teamwork. Since data and evidence are limited, a special focus on poor and developing countries is incorporated. Adjusting clinical guidelines and public health policies around these concepts will increase access to oral care for older people, including those with physical or social barriers, and will ensure better oral health–related quality of life and well-being. These concepts have deep consequences in the education and training of new dentists and specialists, at the public and private levels.

Centric relation, static and dynamic occlusion are less talked about than its actual importance in dentistry. Their relevance to different disciplines of odontology (general dentistry, conservative dentistry, orthodontics, prosthodontics, dental technicians) has been well documented. Numerous articles in scientific literature regarding the importance and necessity of interdisciplinary teamwork in dentistry to correct problems associated with occlusion has been documented. The centric occlusion and centric relation (CO CR) discrepancy is multifactorial with a degree of psychogenic influence varying throughout an individual's life with phases of symptoms affecting the quality of life. The current review highlights role of various disciplines in rectifying problems relating to discrepancy in centric occlusion and centric relation.

Abstract:
Background. One of the urgent problems of modern medicine is the formation and development of an interprofessional approach to the complex therapy of patients with combined pathology. An interdisciplinary approach to the examination and treatment of patients with concomitant diseases is due to the interconnection of the oral mucosa with systemic diseases. Literature data indicate the pathogenetic commonality of systemic connective tissue diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis with periodontitis and oral mucosa diseases, which is based on a diffuse inflammatory process. Objectives ― study of a clinical case of combined lesion of the oral mucosa of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis during treatment with methotrexate. Methods. We examined patient R. — an elderly man of 72-year-old with ulcerative and necrotic lesions of the oral mucosa, simultaneously suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and receiving methotrexate as maintenance therapy. The patient was sent to the Department of Therapeutic Dentistry of Omsk State Medical University, to the clinical base of dental clinic № 1 in Omsk in order to clarify the diagnosis and prescribe complex treatment. Results. Patient R. revealed a combined ulcerative-necrotic lesion of the oral mucosa and gums with rheumatoid arthritis. Joint general and local medical treatment by a dentist of lesions of the oral mucosa, gums, examination, observation in dynamics and the advice of a physician-therapist in terms of prescribing maintenance therapy for rheumatoid arthritis by reducing the dose of the drug (methotrexate) gave a joint positive effect in a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of a patient with comorbid pathology. Conclusions. Our research has shown that it is necessary to increase activity in the development of an interdisciplinary collaboration between dentists and internists. The continuity and friendship of doctors of different specialties make it possible to get a positive result in the treatment and improve the quality of life of patients.

Abstract:
This research aimed to find, gather, and analyze what has been published over the last decade about production management in the context of dental service provision. The study follows a systematic literature review. Searches were conducted in Web of Science™ database with a period constraint of eleven years (2008-2018). A conceptual framework for crossing both disciplines was elaborated to support data analysis. The literature review identified 17 peer-reviewed articles that have addressed the topic. Therefore, little scientific work has been produced in this interdisciplinary field. The findings suggest that patient treatment and dentist’s working time are what demand time the most and influence productivity the most. Productivity is commonly measured per patient seen or treatment delivered. However, there is no consensus among scholars and academics on what type of output measurement is better. In addition, a couple of different types of dental establishments have been identified, and among them, dental centers, dental hospitals, and university dental centers lack studies applying production management tools. The review brings an overview of the intersection of the disciplines consisted of 17 peer-reviewed articles and provides directions for future studies. Practitioners may benefit from information such as the current main ways of measuring productivity. The review shows a picture of the current situation in such an interdisciplinary topic that may contribute to the understanding of it by providing a structured overview that can be useful for academics and practitioners.

Abstract:
Regenerative dentistry represents a novel interdisciplinary approach involving biomaterials, several molecules and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), preferably derived from oral tissues. The pivotal role of MSCs depends on the fact that they can differentiate into different cell lineages and have the strategic role to release bioactive substances that stimulate the renewal and regeneration of damaged tissues. The role of regenerative dentistry is promising in all the branches of dentistry: the most intriguing application is related to the management of endodontic and periodontal defects, overcoming the surgical approach and the implantology as a consequence of a poorly efficient therapeutic plan.

Abstract:
Premier HealthCare, a member of the YAI Network, specializes in outpatient healthcare services (such as primary care, dentistry, psychiatry, rehabilitation, psychotherapy, psychological testing, and nutrition) for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in New York City. This is one of the most in need, yet underserved, groups of medical and dental patients. Many people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulty understanding the significance of healthcare procedures and become overwhelmed by the unfamiliar environment and sensory input of medical and dental practices. They may also have difficulty with communication and socialization, which can exacerbate anxiety and challenging behaviors such as self-stimulation, self-injury, aggression, and tantrums. Additionally, this heightened level of stress can potentially translate into disruptive behaviors or physical reactions to avoid treatment. These challenges combined with a lack of healthcare professionals trained and experienced in working with people with ASD can result in ineffective preventative care and high-cost procedures. At Premier HealthCare, a desensitization program was initiated to increase functional participation in medical and dental exams and decrease use of physical restraints or general anesthesia for people with ASD. An interdisciplinary team of occupational therapists, behavior analysts, doctors, nurses, and dentists collaborate to address how to make medical and dental procedures more tolerable for patients with special needs using a protocol comprising of four main stages: evaluation, treatment, generalization, and maintenance. They work with caregivers to provide person-centered individualized care, ultimately leading to decreased anxiety, fear, and aggressive behaviors; increased participation; and better health outcomes for people with autism.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTPatients with plasma cell myeloma may initially present to their dentists or dental surgeons with toothache, loose teeth, or gingival masses. An X-ray of the jaw can reveal osteolyses. In addition, accumulation of monoclonal light chains in AL-amyloidosis can lead to macroglossia. It is prudent that the dentist or dental surgeon recognizes the underlying disease and refers the patient to the oncologist or hematologist for further workup to prevent the complications of plasma cell myeloma such as renal impairment, fractures, bone pain, infections, hypercalcemia, anemia, or heart failure. Another area where the dentist or dental surgeon is involved with patients suffering from plasma cell myeloma is prevention and therapy of osteonecrosis of the jaw, occurring after administration of bisphosphonates or denosumab for osteolytic bone disease. The case report presented here shows a patient complaining of toothache for whom recognition of a systemic disease by the dentist led to the diagnosis of plasma cell myeloma, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary cooperation. As recent years have seen many changes in the management of patients with plasma cell myeloma, an update for dentists and dental surgeons is warranted.

Abstract:
With the appearance of the first signs of aging on the face, including wrinkles, we begin to think about our external appearance in terms of its aesthetics and attractiveness. The aesthetics of the face is one of the components of health, so in the process of evaluating the aesthetics of the face it is essential not to omit a very important aspect, namely the condition of the oral cavity and teeth. Therefore, when thinking about aesthetic medicine, it is worth consulting a dentist to assess the condition of the mouth, check the muscle tone, bone health, proper occlusion, missing teeth or tooth decay. Interdisciplinary dental treatment including restorative dentistry, periodontics, dental surgery, orthodontics, prosthodontics and sometimes maxillofacial surgery can be a prelude to facial aesthetic medicine treatment. A beautiful, aesthetic smile is not only a smile without signs of aging, but especially one resulting from healthy oral cavity.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors pose a difficult esthetic and treatment planning problem for clinicians. Age, location, space limitations, alveolar ridge deficiencies, uneven gingival margins, occlusion and periodontal factors often necessitate an interdisciplinary approach. Over the last several decades, dentistry has focused various treatment modalities for replacement of missing teeth. Treatment plans for patients with missing maxillary lateral incisors have traditionally included either space closure or space reopening. To remove healthy tooth structure of adjacent teeth to replace a tooth, for some patients and dentists, is a very aggressive treatment option which eliminates the option of three unit bridges. Removable partial dentures are also not preferred for its bulkiness and reduced esthetics. Presently, the single implant supported crown is a predictable method of tooth replacement in adolescents. The aim of this case report is to provide a conservative method for the management of bilateral missing lateral incisor.
