Abstract:
Genomic breeding values (GEBV) were predicted for claw diseases/disorders in Holstein cows. The data sets included 6,498, 6,641 and 16,208 cows for the three groups of analysed disorders. The analysed traits were infectious diseases (ID), including digital and interdigital dermatitis and interdigital phlegmon, and non-infectious diseases (NID), including ulcers, white line disease, horn fissures, and double sole and overall claw disease (OCD), comprising all recorded disorders. Claw diseases/disorders were defined as 0/1 occurrence per lactation. Linear animal models were employed for prediction of conventional breeding values (BV) and genomic breeding values (GEBV), including the random additive genetic effect of animal and the permanent environmental effect of cow and fixed effects of parity, herd, year and month of calving. Both high and intermediate weights (80% and 50%, respectively) of genomic information were employed for GEBV50 and GEBV80 prediction. The estimated heritability for ID was 3.47%, whereas that for NID 4.61% and for OCD was 2.29%. Approximate genetic correlations among claw diseases/disorders traits ranged from 19% (ID x NID) to 81% (NID x OCD). The correlations between predicted BV and GEBV50 (84–99%) were higher than those between BV and GEBV80 (70–98%). Reliability of breeding values was low for each claw disease/disorder (on average, 3.7 to 14.8%) and increased with the weight of genomic information employed.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to design a radio frequency micro-electro-mechanical system (RF MEMS)-based phase shifter using chamfered coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line (t-line) with open-circuit interdigital metal–air–metal (ID MAM) capacitors. Design/methodology/approach The proposed phase shifter achieves maximum differential phase shift with low loss at Ku band. The phase shifter is built with one switchable fixed-fixed beam (MEMS switch) on chamfered CPW t-line in series with two planar open-circuit ID MAM capacitors. An equivalent circuit model for the proposed phase shifter is derived, and its parameters are extracted using an electromagnetic (EM) solver. Findings The MEMS switch is actuated using an electrostatic method with the calculated residual stress of 44.26 MPa. The fabricated phase shifter exhibits low insertion loss, close to 0.14 dB at 17 GHz, with the maximum phase shift of 15.06°. The return loss is greater than 23 dB between 12 and 18 GHz. Originality/value This phase shifter presents a promising solution for low loss applications in the Ku band with a maximum phase shift. As the maximum phase shift of 15.06° is achieved for a unit cell with low insertion loss, the phase shifter is found to be feasible for modern electronically tunable phased arrays used for satellite communication and radar systems.

Abstract:
Background and Aim: This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the associations between different types of housing, management, and facilities on the prevalence of lame, causing lesions in smallholder dairy farms in Algeria. Materials and Methods: The on-site investigation took place between December 2012 and May 2015. All cows were locomotion scored on a four-point scale, and foot lesions causing lame were diagnosed and recorded. Factors related to the farm and the cows' conditions were also assessed. The association between the possible risk factors and lame lesions was assessed using univariate analysis. Results: Of the 349 cows evaluated, 13% were lame (lameness score ≥2), with higher lameness values recorded for the hind feet than for the forefeet. Cows without lameness were classified as healthy. The two most frequent lesion diagnoses observed in lame cows were interdigital dermatitis/heel horn erosion (ID/HE; 39%) and interdigital phlegmon (IP; 35%), followed by traumatic lesions (T; 11%), digital dermatitis (DD; 8.7%), and laminitis-related diseases (L; 6.5%). The risk of being lame was increased in large herds with cows of the Holstein breed, and those in the third parity and above. Tie housing, concrete floor, concentrate feeding, zero-grazing, and the use of foot trimming occasionally were associated with increased risk for the presence of lame lesions. The region and footbathing frequency had no association with the prevalence of lame lesions (p≥0.05). Conclusion: These results have important implications; they indicate that several aspects of housing, management, and facility design are common protective factors for the prevalence of lame lesions. These factors should be maintained correctly to not only reduce the number of lame cows in these herds but also decrease the direct and indirect costs associated with cases of lameness.

Abstract We proposed a hybrid transfer method for continuous and triangular monolayer MoS2 and experimentally analyzed their excitonic photoluminescence and optoelectrical properties on Au interdigital electrodes. The photoluminescence intensities of both MoS2 on interdigital Au were lower than those of the MoS2 on SiO2/Si, and continuous MoS2 on interdigital Au showed the highest A–/A0 exciton ratio. Furthermore, the formed Au/MoS2/Au devices exhibited light-dependent Schottky-contact characteristics and the ID–VD hysteresis. The results provide a basis for understanding the photoluminescence and optoelectrical properties of different MoS2-Au contacts and improving the performance of MoS2-based optoelectrical devices.

Abstract:
Diabetes has shown to be a chronic disease world over, mainly caused due to reduced physical activity and increased obesity. World health organization statistics show diabetes as a leading cause of disability universally. To avoid extreme medical conditions of subjects, regular monitoring of their glucose levels has been suggested. The most common method that has been in use is the pinprick method for glucose monitoring which carries the risk of contamination as well as irritation. One possible approach called noninvasive technique can be adopted to avoid this major concern. This paper presents designing Inter-Digital-Sensor (IDS) for non-invasive sensing of the glucose level. The sensor-based chip once mounted onto the upper arm or pinkie finger of diabetes subject, is able to sense different glucose levels concentration as impedance plots. A set of several simulation results has been obtained using COMSOL for getting optimized dimensions of the sensor digits. This research has presented the generation of an electric field and intensity by using electrode of known length with element spacing varying from 250µm to 600µm developed over 15mm x 20mm sensor area. An ID of 475µm width spacing with ten (10) digits producing 2.33 pF of capacitance value with impedance resonating at 13 GHz of frequency is reported in this paper

Abstract:
Contagious ovine digital dermatitis (CODD) is a severe and common infectious foot disease of sheep and a significant animal welfare issue for the sheep industry in the UK and some European countries. The etiology and pathogenesis of the disease are incompletely understood. In this longitudinal, experimental study, CODD was induced in 18 sheep, and for the first time, the clinical lesion development and associated microbiological changes in CODD affected feet are described over time, resulting in a completely new understanding of the etiopathogenesis of CODD. The majority of CODD lesions (83.9%) arose from pre-existing interdigital dermatitis (ID) and/or footrot (FR) lesions. All stages of foot disease were associated with high levels of poly-bacterial colonization with five pathogens, which were detected by quantitative PCR (qPCR): Treponema medium, Treponema phagedenis, Treponema pedis, Dichelobacter nodosus, and Fusobacterium necrophorum. Temporal colonization patterns showed a trend for early colonization by T. phagedenis, followed by F. necrophorum and D. nodosus, T. medium, and then T. pedis, D. nodosus was present at significantly higher predicted mean log10 genome copy numbers in FR lesions compared to both ID and CODD, while Treponema species were significantly higher in CODD and FR lesions compared to ID lesions (p < 0.001). Treatment of CODD-affected sheep with two doses of 10 mg/kg long acting amoxicillin resulted in a 91.7% clinical cure rate by 3 weeks post-treatment; however, a bacteriological cure was not established for all CODD-affected feet. The study found that in an infected flock, healthy feet, healed CODD feet, and treated CODD feet can be colonized by some or all of the five pathogens associated with CODD and therefore could be a source of continued infection in flocks. The study is an experimental study, and the findings require validation in field CODD cases. However, it does provide a new understanding of the etiopathogenesis of CODD and further supportive evidence for the importance of current advice on the control of CODD; namely, ensuring optimum flock control of footrot and prompt isolation and effective treatment of clinical cases.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Contagious Ovine Digital Dermatitis (CODD) is an emerging and common infectious foot disease of sheep which causes severe welfare and economic problems for the sheep industry. The aetiology of the disease is not fully understood and control of the disease is problematic. The aim of this study was to investigate the polybacterial aetiopathogenesis of CODD and the effects of antibiotic treatment, in a longitudinal study of an experimentally induced disease outbreak using a 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing approach. Results CODD was induced in 15/30 experimental sheep. During the development of CODD three distinct phenotypic lesion stages were observed. These were an initial interdigital dermatitis (ID) lesion, followed by a footrot (FR) lesion, then finally a CODD lesion. Distinct microbiota were observed for each lesion in terms of microbial diversity, clustering and composition. Porphyromonadaceae, Family XI, Veillonellaceae and Fusobacteriaceae were significantly associated with the diseased feet. Veillonellaceae and Fusobacteriaceae were most associated with the earlier stages of ID and footrot rather than CODD. Following antibiotic treatment of the sheep, the foot microbiota showed a strong tendency to return to the composition of the healthy state. The microbiota composition of CODD lesions collected by swab and biopsy methods were different. In particular, the Spirochaetaceae family were more abundant in samples collected by the biopsy method, suggesting that these bacteria are present in deeper tissues of the diseased foot. Conclusion In this study, CODD presented as part of a spectrum of poly-bacterial foot disease strongly associated with bacterial families Porphyromonadaceae, Family XI (a family in Clostridiales also known as Clostridium cluster XI), Veillonellaceae and Fusobacteriaceae which are predominately Gram-negative anaerobes. Following antibiotic treatment, the microbiome showed a strong tendency to return to the composition of the healthy state. The composition of the healthy foot microbiome does not influence susceptibility to CODD. Based on the data presented here and that CODD appears to be the severest end stage of sheep infectious foot disease lesions, better control of the initial ID and FR lesions would enable better control of CODD and enable better animal welfare.

Abstract:
The repeated usage of frying oil is hazardous due to the degradation caused by chemical reactions, which happen while heating. The total polar compounds and the free fatty acids are the main two chemical parameters affected by frying. These parameters increase significantly with the use of oil for frying and are reported as reasons for causing serious illnesses like heart diseases. For this purpose, sensor systems for oil quality assessment are necessary. In fact, changes of the composition due to frying leads to variation of its dielectric parameters. This can be measured using a capacitive sensor and the measurement of its impedance change. The main challenge thereby is that the impedance changes are very small and stray capacitances have a big influence on the measurements. In this context, this work proposes a sensor system with high accuracy able to detect the small changes that occur in the resistance and capacitance under influence of stry capacitances. Theoretical and simulation studies are carried out for different cap acitive sensors as well as meas urement procedures of its cornp lex imp edance. The sensor should provide a high sensitivity to relative perrnittivity and the electrical conductiv ity, and at the same time a small size and a high reproducibility. Interdigital electrodes sensor with a suitable design fulfils all these requirements. A deep consideration of stray capacitances is needed to realize an accurate sensor system. For t hese reasons, the design of the measurement circuit is crucial within this work. We propose, a measurernent circuit based on a combinat ion of the method of capacitance to voltage conversion and the phase shift measurement method. By cornbining both rnethods together it is possible to rneasure accurate ly the complex irnpedance of edible oil. Experimental results show that measurement systern is capable to detect small changes of dielectric parameters, which are correlated to the chemical parameters.
Die mehrfach wiederholte Verwendung von Frittieröl ist aufgrund der Qualitätsver­ schlechterung, die während des Erhitzens auftreten durch chemische Reaktionen verursacht wird, gefährlich für die Gesundheit. Die totale polaren Kompon enten und die freien Fettsäuren sind die zwei wichtigsten chemischen Komponenten, die wesentlich durch das Braten beeinflusst werden. Diese Komponenten erhöhen sich signifikant mit der Wiederverwendung von Bratöl und verursachen u. a. ernste Herzkrankheiten. Diese Arbeit zielt darauf hin, ein mobiles, kostengünstiges, einfach zu verwenden­ des Sensorsystem für die Abschätzung der Ölqualität zu entwickeln. Das System charakterisiert die Veränderung der elektrischen Parameter des Öls durch Messung der Änderung seiner komplexen elektrischen Eigenschaft en. In dieser Arbeit wurde ein Sensorelement mit interdigitalen Elektroden entwickelt, der eine hohe Empfindlichkeit auf die relative Permittivität und die elektrischen Leitfähigkeit des Öls hat und dabei einer hohe Reproduzierbarkeit erzielen kann. Es wird ein Messverfahren vorgeschlagen, das auf der Wandlung in einer Spannung und einer Phasenverschiebung basiert. Sowohl durch theoretische Überlegungen als auch durch Simulationen konnte belegt werden, dass die Kombination beider Metho­ den eine akkurate Messung der Komplexem Imped anz hochdielektrischer Materia lien ermöglichen kann. Experiment elle Ergebnisse zeige n, dass das Messsystem in der Lage ist , kleine Änderungen der dielektrischen Parameter zu erfassen, die mit den chemischen Ölparamtern stark korrelieren.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the modeling of styrene free radical polymerization in two different types of micro-mixer for which the wall temperature is kept constant. The simulations are performed with the help of the finite elements method which allows solving simultaneously partial differential equations resulting from the hydrodynamics, thermal and mass transfer (convection, diffusion and chemical reaction). The different micro-mixers modeled are on one hand an interdigital multilamination micro-mixer with a large focusing section and on the other hand a simple T-junction with three different radii followed by a tube reactor having the same radius. The results are expressed in terms of reactor temperature, polydispersity index, number-average degree of polymerization and monomer conversion for different values of the chemical species diffusion coefficient. Despite of the heat released by the polymerization reaction, it was found that the thermal transfer in such microfluidic devices is high enough to ensure isothermal conditions. Concerning the polydispersity index, the range of diffusion coefficients over which the polydispersity index can be maintained close to the theoretical value for ideal conditions increases as the tube reactor radius decreases. The interdigital multilamination micro-mixer was found to act as a T-junction and tube reactor of 0,72 mm ID but gives up to 15% higher monomer conversion. This underlines that the use of microfluidic devices can lead to a better control of the polymerization.
