Full textStudies of verbal interaction in an intercultural situation carried out until now in France have focused on French culture in comparison with other European, Asian, African, Latin-American cultures or Arab groups such as North Africans, Egyptians, Lebanese and Syrians. Other Arab cultures still remain well off this research field. Thus, it appears interesting to undertake a study of intercultural interactions, where the partners are from Yemen and France, whose language of communication is French. The work we present is to analyze, from audiovisual recordings, the difficulties of communication and the means used to overcome them. After explaining the context of the study and the theoretical framework of research, we investigate the communicative and interactional conducts of Yemeni subjects practicing the French language to determine their competence to communicate in an intercultural environment and in exolingual situation, the nature of their gaps as well as their efforts to overcome these difficulties. We identify the communication strategies implemented to repair any dysfunction or misunderstanding. The purpose of our study is, in fact, to contribute to a better knowledge of the intercultural communication by making, using (ICT), didactic proposals to the teaching of French language for Yemeni learners, because awareness of the communicative differences helps to reduce misperceptions and misunderstandings often affecting the intercultural meetings
Keyhani, Narguesse. "Les "relations interculturelles" : trajectoire sociale d'une catégorie réformatrice." Thesis, Cachan, Ecole normale supérieure, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014DENS0039/document.
Full textThis study follows the trajectory of the category of “intercultural relations”, both an academic and a public policy category. It analyses, in the French context, its first formulations in the beginnings of the 1960’s, its various forms of institutionalization along the 1980’s and describes its progressive invisibilization until the 2000’s. This study investigates the way different actors use this category in a scientific, administrative or political way in order to consider the presence of immigrants in the French society. The mobilization of this category led these sociologists, educationalists and civil servants to rethink the immigration phenomenon. Instead of looking at the dynamics of social classes or with an assimilationist view, they put the cultural dimension of immigrant workers’ presence in France at the heart of the analysis. At the centre of this study lies the analysis of the emergence of this scientific category coined via critical knowledge and used as a reforming public policy category which targets representations of a so-called “racist French public opinion”. The investigation is carried out at the crossroads of socio-historical analysis of a category and the study of the construction of policy problems. It is based on (partly unreleased) archives of public organizations, depending from the Ministry of social affairs, in charge of implementing insertion policies and promoting intercultural relations. This study also relies on the grey literature produced both by the main promoters of this cause, and various State agencies as well as interviews with both kinds of actors. These empirical data are examined through two approaches: first the analysis of the relations between knowledge and public policy; and second, the relations between organisations and public policy. The thesis shows that the idealistic dimension of this category promoting a harmonious management of intercultural relations has not been present very long in the government’’ agenda. However, this category has been used as a long-lasting regulation device for the interactions between street-level civil servants and immigrants constituents. It also shows that the institutionalization of this knowledge in an organization at the margin of the State and the strategies developed to fight a “racist public opinion” contributed to forge and feed a depoliticized antiracism. Investigating on a barely visible category, the thesis aims at giving an account of the process of the redefinition of the boundary between State and society which is at the heart of the pedagogical role of the State
Thesis, Paris 4, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA040169.
Full textOften times, German so called ‘literature of migration’ has been the subject of general studies which regroup several authors. This work, exclusively dedicated to the work of the Syrian-born (1946) German-speaking author Rafik Schami, intends to reindividualize the work of this author and to consider it in its historicity and evolution. Building his work largely upon his 'Oriental' origins all-whilst writing in German, Schami instrumentalizes his prose, intertextual references and his own public and literary persona to connect himself to a certain lineage of discourse on the Orient and the Western reception responding to that discourse. From a dual approach – one socio-poetical, and the other text-analytical –, we examine on one hand the many postures of Schami's 'intercultural' authorship as they relate to storytelling between the East and the West, and on the other hand consider his work as an inquiry of power relations inherent to the interplay between the center and the periphery. Somewhere between popular literature and belles-lettres, the intercultural fictions of Rafik Schami are an attempt, even at times ambiguous, to introduce the Western reader an ‘elsewhere’. This 'elsewhere', sometimes portrayed as the world of the worker or the immigrant in Germany, some others as an Arab world vaguely defined and staged as an "Arabia", and most frequently as Syria, or Damascus and its surroundings in particular, forms the core of Rafik Schami's work. It is through the 'elsewhere' that Schami aspires to raise cultural awareness in his readers, and aims to interest them in the lives of the minorities and of the unvoiced groups and individuals whose stories he tells

Full textThe folktale, by its crossculturality itself, is a preferential tool for mediation between school and immigrant families. The type 450 (according to the international type-index of aarne and thompson), "little brother and little sister", very present in the maghreb culture an particularly in the kabyle one, intitled "the orphan' cow" , gave rise to a collecting work, in which children in primary and secondary schools were involved. The collected versions have been compared. Works od rewriting, making of a playing-book : a movment is born, changing relations with writing. In this respect, working about a tale and its variants could perhaps evolve a new folktale culture, with a free use of roots and cultural openings. It paves the way to pedagogical practices within reach of all children, even through they are in difficulties, and whatever their origins, and offers most of them, through comparatism, a true way to literature

Full textAt a time when mobility is increasing and cultural values are moving more and more towards unification, it was important to observe the migration of diasporic groups with strong identity values and to analyze their territorialities and intercultural dynamics. This work aims to initiate a geographical study of the diasporic migratory phenomenon. It is concerned with the analysis of the migratory space between the original place of the minority group and its poles of settlement with the specific example of the ethnolinguistic and religious minority of the Algerian Mozabites who migrate and appropriate different clusters in the internal and international context. The choice of analyzing several installation clusters (El-Eulma in Algeria, Marseille and Lille in France) and to compare the internal migration with the international migration of this group, made it possible to evaluate the influence of the different factors on the design of diasporic migratory phenomena. It also enlightened on how identity belonging is a variable solicited by the diasporic group to form its space and its migratory system
Faust, Catou. "Représentations et gestion des compétences interculturelles. Le cas de Renault." Thesis, Paris Est, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PESC0013.
Full textThis doctoral research intends to understand a paradox: while the impact of cultural differences on business relationships are well known, the HR function does not equip the managers with the tools necessary to deal adequately with cross-cultural situations. This work is based on a case study conducted at Renault through 74 qualitative interviews. The results show a restrictive understanding of the intercultural competence (ICC) which is equated with expatriation, acquired "automatically," by those assigned to work overseas. It follows that the HR practices based on these beliefs, inherited from an era of rapid international expansion for Renault, no longer correspond to today's cross-cultural reality. Indeed, our findings suggest that, the ICC dimensions combine in multiple ways, resulting in managerial profiles which are more or less adapted according to the professional context. Our main theoretical contribution is the review of the concept of ICC, allowing the HR function to more effectively match competencies to the needs of a given situation. This new approach proposes abandoning individuals' competency assessment to concentrate on a systematic identification of the needs. Secondly, we aim to provide adapted practices for use within the HR function
Joma, Salem. "Enseignement / apprentissage du FLE en Libye : méthodes utilisées et perspectives interculturelles." Besançon, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009BESA1018.
Full textThis research, entitled Teaching/ learning of the French (FLE) in Libya, methods currently used and intercultural perspective, suggests studying, from a cultural contents point of view, the methods used at present in Libya, and experimenting a methodological approach of an intercultural inspiration. The general problematic is based on the choice which we have to operate as for the cultural contents of a foreign language method, the treatment which is necessary to run at the level of the previous cultural experiences of the learner and the way these can be put in the service of the new learning apprenticeship. We arise two questionings: what obstacles are raised while mother and foreign language-culture are confronting and on what base one could rely to choose cultural contents of a method of FLE. Our methodological step consists of an analysis of the cultural contents of the methods of FLE and a survey with the Libyan teachers of French. The results which we reached indicate that the methods in question are in favor of a learning/acquisition of the linguistic elements without taking into account the socio-cultural reality of the learner. It is this reality which sometimes pushes the learner into a kind of resistance, of feeling bad or even of refusal of what is proposed. The questioned teachers approve a method of foreign language-culture which would take into account the socio-cultural reality of the learner. The intercultural approach which we propose is favorable for the presence of the culture of the learner, while learning of a foreign language-culture that could be a pleasing factor and inciting to comparison and to discovery: this can only facilitate the new learning because the learner leans on a reference frame which is proper and familiar to him. These conclusions led us to emit didactic propositions susceptible to concretize the methodological steps which we laud for the implementation of a method of FLE

Full textThis PHd has one aim : analyse the diplomatic impact of France in the World through history. Indeed, what is actually remembered or simply known of French history outside France, for example in Europe? This question may sound irrevelant but it is all the more essential since the French Speaking World authorities are now advocating cultural diversity rather than political universalism which had its day a long time ago- what are the historical figures that are still very much present in the minds and souls of the people in this or in that country ? This study aims at analyzing the inter-relations between the too often stereotyped and romantic visions of French history and the national pasts of other countries. In order to achieve this goal, we ought to raise a few crucial points : It is still imaginable to write a national history of France? May the national history of a country which is represented abroad still be of interest in today’s world as one move with the times? These two introductory questions have led to the following subject: to what extent can we say the representation of French history is the combination of romantic fantasy and heroism? Then another question comes to the surface: are these representations to be linked to some French post-colonial universalism or are they to be related to some universal principles prone to multiculturalism? How these values are now spread abroad? Are they still meaningful today? And if one is to acknowledge some certain international loss of interest in France’s past, has it anything to do with the rank of France in the world? That is to say: are French historic idiosyncrasies still alive? What is often depicted as being very unique and one of a kind as regards France may, in fact, mirror a feeling of nostalgia for the glorious but foregone past of France. After saying that, one might conceive France as a living museum of which dividends would come from the exploration and endless dramatization of its cultural heritage and history

Full textThe literature of the French-speaking Black Africa was perceived for a long time even theorized like concerning an ordinary literature of engagement because of the history of the continent. This design, in a certain manner, unconsciously harmed the image which one could have of this literature. It is from the Eighties, after the collapse of the Communism, that the concept of literary engagement seems, to be constrained to evolve and to renew itself putting more and more the African writer in a rather uncomfortable situation divided between the desire to remain a political writer, near to his people concerns, and the desire to assert a creative autonomy. Nowadays, if the question of artistic engagement makes debate again, it’s certainly not a question of chance according to the confused and dubious time we must cope with. Indeed, we attend a loss of the reference marks and ideals leading the men of thought (intellectual, writers) to adopt writing projects, i. E. Engagements, different in their work of creation. What are the interrogations that were faced or are still faced to the sub-Saharan committed literature in this universalization era? Thus, our study tries to analyze the evolution of this problematic until the faintness current of the new African writers in French language, confronted with a problem of redefinition contents of literary engagement

Full textThe action-oriented approach which has been institutionalised by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is also called “the new methodology in the teaching and learning of languages”. It is widely used, both for official and for research purposes. This thesis aims to test and question the construction of understanding of this methodology both in France (the Educational Authority of Lille) and in Germany (Land Hessen, Land Nordrhein-Westfalen) by looking at the practices and discourses of primary school teachers (écoles élémentaires and Grundschule) through the concepts of both the intercultural and independent approaches. These notions, as well as being cornerstones constructed by and for the research, are defined by interrelation and questioned with a reflexive and critical mind-set. They are especially debated in opposition to the reifying culturalist approach. These notions strain against the official requirements and the beliefs of the teachers with whom I collaborated on this project. The research is based on the intersection of much empirical data from both France as well as Germany, for example: focus groups with teachers, observation of foreign language lessons, interviews with the teachers, literature detailing official requirements (language syllabuses) and literature detailing recommendations (the online training packages of Pairform@nce and Intel Lehren Aufbaukurs Online). The discourses, which have been placed into context, are analysed with regards to the theories of enunciation and dialogism. The thesis offers a critical perspective of comparative differentialist visions, yet allows a visualisation of the results that enhance the Franco-German diversities in order to build an understanding of the research objective

Full textThe subject matter of the present research is the analysis of conditions in which immigrant youth develop their cross cultural competences in school milieu in Sherbrooke.Several questions pertaining to changes taking place in Quebec society and the particular needs of Quebec’s educational system, in which the target population evolves, are outlined. Nationally, and particularly on the institutional level, the emergence of complex intercultural trajectories is increasingly taking center-stage. Such experiences represent dynamic evolving phenomena that provoke various feelings, specific behavior patterns, emotional disorders and cultural shocks. They are more clearly identifiable in certain regions where the number of newly arrived immigrants continuously grows. And the immigration in Sherbrooke is in constant evolution. Academic professionals are not sufficiently skilled to adequately perform in this kind of situations. They deplore their lack of knowledge and resources in this area, given that immigration to small towns on this scale is a relatively new phenomenon in Canada.Furthermore, this new phenomenon remains largely unexplored in the scientific domain. This subject is only partially paid attention to and is poorly adapted to the specific realities of immigrant youth being brought up in such regions. The conceptual field and frame of reference appear to have to be entirely reconstructed. To do so, it is necessary to analyze the conditions in which immigrant youth develop their cross-cultural competencies as it would allow us to understand the process of how they are acquired.Such subtle analysis will provide for carrying out tools and techniques to better equip academic professionals with knowledge and skills to help them face their new school realities and act in an appropriate and efficient manner. To address this need, we deployed an analysis pattern, which allowed us to study the evolution of cross-cultural competences by considering positive and negative factors for their development. These factors have been classified in an ecosystem, going from micro-system to macro-system.In the present study four types of respondents were interrogated: Quebecois youth, immigrant youth and their parents and teachers working in multicultural classes. These four respondents’ types were necessary to obtain a comprehensive view of the immigrant situation and their integration. We used focus groups, projective imagination test and face to face interviews. The results of the global analysis have shown that there are several crucial factors which were classified into the ecosystem. The main identified factors are: the degree of self-motivation, self esteem and how the school image is perceived (microsystem), parental strategies (mesosystem), teachers’ academic background and their tutorial approach, as well as policies around “welcome classes” structure (macrosystem). Moreover, we noticed that immigrant youth tend to faster adopt and integrate the culture of the Quebec society as well as merge with the new school community. The present research aimed to study the concepts of cross-cultural competencies has been enriched by the multidisciplinary approach we have applied throughout our analysis (psychology, pedagogy, sociology and anthropology)

Full textIs it possible to rethink Literary History and in particular the History of the Novel as Cultural History which seeks to differentiate between an historical object and it’s representation? Considering the critical doxa, according to which, there exists a genetic link between epics and the novel, leads to one of Western thinking’s most stubborn myths. If epics, and particularly Homer’s, is seen as the novel’s ascendant , although it belongs to oral tradition, how does it explain the fact that as Ancient civilizations as Egypt or China or Israel developed sophisticated prose narratives without having epics? Moreover, if Western literary history refers to Aristotle’s Poetics as it’s foundational text, although by the time it was written, fictional prose didn’t exist yet, and was only to develop a few centuries later, shouldn’t we seek for the missing link between the oral tradition and the rise of the novel? As against this hegemonic and unhistorical representation that considers the novel genre as a Western invention, and as opposed to the historical circumstances that gave birth to the novel, we consider that the key to understanding this phenomenon lies in the emergence of literacy and prose. Indeed, in all civilizations that developed fictional prose writing, it was systematically preceded, not by epics, but by historiography. Our PHD dissertation presents an alternative History of the novel, whose angle is intercultural and interdisciplinary, aiming at recreating a new chronology of the emergence of the novel as a an inevitable historical genre in world’s literature

Full textThe current teaching of foreign languages encourages us to follow an action-based approach, advocating the teaching and learning languages by tasks (task-based learning), or by the resolution of problems (problem-based learning). The action-based approach is widely followed, however, less apparent in the domain of the intercultural and its teaching. Yet if you start from the principle that the learning of foreign languages presents the ideal framework for intercultural learning, one has to ask how to develop and transmit within it, beyond sociocultural skills, intercultural competencies. This research project presents the development of a didactic device, termed Case Studies for the Intercultural, ensuring the double realisation of these objectives and their implementation on the ground, throughout the course of four years of experimentation in higher learning. This didactic tool has the purpose of drawing out intercultural competencies among the students in language classes, through the realisation of tasks mobilising skills and resources which activate general and intercultural competencies beyond mere skill of linguistic communication. It thereby integrates the double paradigmatic shift of the teaching of languages and cultures and of the teaching of the intercultural by drawing respectively on the action-based approach, and the hermeneutic approach. this research leads us to the creation of a new approach, the so-called Co-actional Interpretative Perspective, uniting the paradigmatic advances in the two fields

A team of educators belonging to a special prevention group faced with cultural conflicts question their cultural approach biassed by misunderstanding on both sides, the result of ideological stereotypes and mutual fears. In our present multicultural society with its new strata, the co-existence of different cultures and the problems of self-identification within each culture are paramount. In this environment with its individual and collective conflicts emerges a clearly intercultural approach evolved by juveniles. The ultimate goal : relationships based on togetherness in a world of different cultural values with a strong accent on attemts at integration with a view to creating a future common environment

Full textIn the current context when the cultural exchanges increase, the mobility experiences start at a young age and the use of Internet allows the intercultural encounters without any geographical movement, the Chinese teaching reveals a new expectation : the development of cultural and intercultural competences that enables learners to have a greater openness towards other cultures and maintain a non-conflictual relationship with the other. However, the reality shows us that there is a gap between the cultural and intercultural objectives of teaching materials, teachers, students and parents, and their implementation in teaching, a gap between the theoretical objectives recommended by official documents and the objectives in practice, and also a gap between cultural and intercultural competences and their recognition by the French education system. Our research falls under the didactics of languages and cultures, open to pluridisciplinarity, and borrows especially from anthropology, sociology and psychology. It takes as study field the middle school Emile Zola of Rennes and relies on a mixed corpus of interviews, teaching materials and the official documents. Considering as social actors the 5 teachers, 20 students and 16 parents, the study was able to show the importance of social factors in the development of cultural and intercultural competences of learners in Chinese teaching of French secondary education

Full textThis research presents an original qualitative study on Chinese language acquisition and the cross-cultural adaptation process of Irish university students studying Mandarin in China. It draws upon, and adds to, an existing body of research exploring intercultural adjustment of international students in higher education. Frameworks that inform this study include John W. Berry’s theory of acculturation, Geert Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory, Young Y. Kim’s theory of cross-cultural adaptation, and Kalervo Oberg’s culture shock theory. The overall aim of this research is to develop a deeper understanding of intercultural adjustment of Irish students studying Mandarin in China. In order to fulfil this aim, the following four research questions were developed:1. What culture shock has Irish university students experienced in China? What difficulties did these students encounter? What strategies did they employ to overcome these difficulties?2. What kind of culture identity have the Irish students developed after their study-abroad in China?3. What are their Chinese language learning experiences in China?4. What are the facilitators of and hindrances to their intercultural adjustment process. Using a thematic analysis approach, twenty-four in-depth interviews and six journals were analysed to produce findings grounded in Irish students’ cross-cultural adaptation experiences. This project’s four primary research findings are as follows: Research finding 1 - Cultural shock experienced by Irish studentsData demonstrates that although these Irish students adapted successfully in the host country, the majority of the students experienced a certain degree of culture shock. Students reported various levels of frustration and misunderstanding arising from the mismatch of their own culture and that of the host culture. These students also encountered adjustment difficulties including: homesickness; loneliness; pollution and food hygiene problems; and difficulties with language. However, students utilized their coping strategies to minimize the effects of culture shock.Research finding 2 - Intercultural identity and intercultural competence developed by Irish studentsData reveals the successful cultural adaptation of the Irish students studying abroad in China, with ensuing implications for the perception of their cultural identity. There was a positive adjustment by the Irish students who became more tolerant and open-minded, intercultural individuals. Research finding 3 – Irish students’ language acquisition in ChinaData suggests that Irish students increased their language proficiency (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and communicative competence (grammatical, strategic, and sociolinguistic) as the result of immersion in the target language and culture. Students benefit considerably in the learning of the Chinese language in the immersive environment, particularly regarding oral skills, vocabulary, and sociolinguistic awareness. Research finding 4 – Facilitators and hindrances to Irish students’ cross-cultural adjustmentSix facilitators were identified through a thematic analysis of the data: motivation; prior cross-cultural experiences; preparation; perceived support; integrative attitude; and intercultural personality characteristics. Three hindrances were identified: cultural distance, bureaucracy and perceived discrimination. This study also suggests that Chinese language proficiency and the use of modern technology can operate as both facilitators of and hindrances to language acquisition and cross-cultural adaptation. Overall, this study brings a unique insight into the intercultural adjustment of Irish students studying in China and contributes to existing knowledge in the field of intercultural studies, targeting the specific area of cross-cultural adaptation

It is a depiction that measures how these groups contribute, directly or indirectly, to the development of their cultural relationships and underpins the understanding of intercultural relations in these countries. this thesis also aims to identify yet question the rationale behind conflicting cultural views that have led to the refusal of turkey’s proposed eu membership. at the same time, the study identifies what is perceived accepted and politically correct culture in host countries as publicised in the media and the implications for turkish migrants. This study is important not only because it addresses the difficulties faced by turkish migrants in europe in their quest to culturally adapt to their host country’s community requirements, but also because it questions the motives behind cultural conflicts. the main reasoning of this study is to reveal reciprocal perceptions, media assumptions and cultural stereotyping, and to bring a sociological approach to the issue using such concepts as multiculturalism, identity, and intercultural relations as they impact communications between groups with different cultural backgrounds but living in cohabitation within the same territory

Full textArts express an imaginary universe, shared by all cultures and translate the core values of their fundamental values. If there is a universal dimension of artistic expression, the art is also a language that refers to the specific characteristics of each culture. In the context of teaching French as a foreign language (FFL) in China, there is a clear lack of interest in culture in general, and even less to the visual arts in particular. It is from this observation that we ground the base of this thesis which is meant to introduce an art education in the classroom of FFL in China. The objectives of this research are the following: firstly, make a clear reflection over the humanistic dimension through the history of art in Europe; secondly, rethink a FFL teaching method, based on the aesthetic dimension of Chinese and western culture; thirdly, formulate a concrete education project where arts could enrich the cultural representations of learners. This work consists of two parts: the first part is to contextualize the teaching of FFL in China from a historical perspective. From the Confucian and Taoist traditional education to the European humanism since the sixteenth century, our intention is to highlight the value of FFL education in China by training young learners with cognitive and emotional knowledge from the history of art. The second part deals to apply our analysis to the corpus of art works, selected by theme. From traditional art to contemporary art, from Chinese art to Western art, we put the arts on the crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures so as to establish the favorable comparisons and to develop the aesthetic, intercultural and transcultural skills of Chinese learners. Thus, this research adopts intercultural approaches to enrich the teaching of FFL in China. It is from a humanistic perspective that such irreversible change prevails nowadays in the educational reforms in China in recent years

Full textStudies of the didactics of foreign languages confirm the superficial and reduced perception of the target language and culture in college students and even in university students. Fundamental research of the reception of Austria in France and that of France in Austria has been done only in a few fields. The present study (in German language teachers in France, and in French language teachers in Austria) breaks new ground on mutual perception (regards croisés), especially with regard to language teaching on a college level. It shows, on the one hand, stereotype images present in young people, and, on the other hand, the basic approach and the know-how of foreign language teachers vis-à-vis intercultural competence. Results were interpreted within the educational context (curricula, textbooks, relative official directives) as well as against the background of the impact of historical and current Franco-Austrian relations, official cultural policies and media transporting stereotype images and resentments present in either society. How to intervene with negative attitudes and reduced images present in foreign language teaching? The didactic section of the present study presents a model for a gradual introduction of intercultural competence in the second foreign language, focussing on differentiating reflections of the foreign, and the native, culture

Full textContemporary Mexican cinema is located in-between, as much in geographical terms as in aesthetic and cultural ones. Many tensions reside within it, such as the ways in which it negotiates with contemporary Hollywood film and also with other cinemas and artistic forms. This research aims to explore the tension that animates every cross-cultural image and is expressed so distinctively within Mexican history and visual culture. This thesis seeks to investigate the extent to which contemporary Mexican cinema can be considered a site of appropriation of different media cultures in intercultural relations. The main corpus of study comprises the films of A. G-INARRITU and C. REYGADAS, which were released during 2000-2008. These films were analyzed using an intermedial approach, in order to emphasize their links with other media (such as television, comic strip, literature, painting) or other genres (advertisement, documentary, video-clip). The processes of communication that inform the films’ production and reception are considered, and the recurrent tensions between notions of the local and the global that characterize contemporary Mexican cinema are also highlighted. Moreover, this essential characteristic of contemporary Mexican cinema emphasizes its importance for understanding the factors at stake within intercultural communication. Adopting a communicational approach towards cinema, this thesis analyses images as complex objects and uses a dialogical reasoning that crosses different disciplinary boundaries. It aims to utilize productively a semiotic (more precisely semio-pragmatic) approach and a historical, anthropological and cultural approach towards images

Full textThe aim of this work is to use an iconographic approach to study the intercultural meetings in Lycia and to understand in a better way the Lycians. Lycia is a zone of contacts : an area of the South-West of Anatolia, near East Greece, included in the Persian Empire from the middle of the sixth century B. C. . In the first part, from the examination of the lycian material dated from the middle of the sixth century B. C. To the fourth century B. C. , composed by painted funeral chambers, funeral pillars, rock tombs, sarcophagi, and other stone monuments, we draw up the list of the patterns and themes which constitute the lycian iconography. In the second part, the study of the athletic scenes from the funeral monuments of the sixth century, then the study of the representations of the fabulous beings and animals of the sixth, fifth and fourth centuries, after a deliberate selection, are developed. These studies analyse the pictures, around the fine description of the content and the observation of the style. As well, follow a comparative approach of the iconographic corpus from the greek worlds, the areas of Anatolia and the ancient Near East, and the research of the interpretation of the pictures, according to the local believes and practices. In this way, the intricate game between the appearance and the meaning of the pictures is cleared up, some sources and some ways of transmission of the iconographic patterns are brought to light. The hellenization by art is a fact and can be seen in the style and in some different iconographic patterns. However, it is partial, and doesn’t exclude an anatolian repertory and mind-set, printed with oriental accents

Full textThis study aims to explore, within the framework of theories of self-regulation and with the help of different concepts, e. G. Self-esteem, personal life goals, coping strategies, psychological distress, the feeling of anger as well as locus of control, risk profiles for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and obesity in two countries of different cultures : Poland and France. The studied population consists of 345 women of Polish (from Silesia) and French (from the region around Metz) nationality. We examine a group of 30 Polish and 32 French anorexics, of 30 Polish and 14 French bulimics as well as 30 Polish and 32 French obese subjects. Our control group consists of 60 Polish and 57 French students together with 30 Polish and 30 French adult women. All the participants filled in the E. D. I. By Garner and al. (1983), the S. E. I. By Coopersmith (1984), the G. I. F. S. By Maes and al. (2000), the Brief COPE by Carver (1997), the S. E. C. S. By Van Elderen and al. (1997), the H. A. D. By Zigmond and Snaith (1983) and the I. P. C. By Levenson (1991). Our results indicate that the profile of Polish anorexics closely resembles that of French anorexics. There are two independent variables which play an equally important role : the first concerns the interiorisation of anger, the second concerns conflicts in the goals of intellectual development (the importance and at the same time the difficulty of reaching these goals). The identification of identical variables in two culturally different populations suffering from anorexia nervosa allows us to assume that it is the psychological factors which dominate and which play a much more important role than the sociocultural factors in this pathology. The Polish girls, who have a greater tendency to become anorexic, rather conceptualise their anger against themselves, they believe that they are controlled by other powerful people and simultaneously show a very weak belief in chance. The Polish girls tend to use denial as one of the coping strategies and their goals of intellectual development are very important for them but, at the same time, very difficult to attain, which causes problems with regard to these goals concerning intellectual development. The French girls can be described as equally presenting more internal anger, often focus on important goals of intellectual development which they consider difficult to attain and make less use of acceptance as one of the coping strategies. The factors predicting bulimia nervosa are not the same in the two populations under study. Therefore we assume that the sociocultural dimension (the wish to conform to esthetic ideals of thinness) triggers bulimia in western societies. Polish girls who are more at risk of becoming bulimic employ more coping strategies, while they focus on consuming different substances, for example alcohol, psychopharmaceuticals or drugs, in order to reduce their anguish, tend to turn their anger outwards and believe in external control. They usually do not reinterpret the situation positively in order to deal with emotional distress (do not use the coping strategy positive reinterpretation). By contrast, French girls rather turn their anger against themselves, reduce their efforts to cope with the situation (behavioural disengagement as one of the coping strategies) and have lower familial self-esteem. The risk factors for obesity are not the same in the Polish and French populations. We suppose that obesity is an illness which can develop rather as the result of the sociocultural (or genetic) context than as the result of an individual's personality. The variables used in this study do not provide any insight into the causes of obesity, which goes to show that the factors associated with obesity differ from those associated with eating disorders

Full textThe spread of Brazilian capoeira in the world is supported by the increasing mobility of the actors of its transmission between Brazil and Europe, as well as the possibilities created by current information circulation (YouTube, Internet). The capoeira roda (circle) presents itself as a space of plural expressions of ‘encircled’ individualities. Out of consideration for a ‘tradition’ and ‘foundations’, the control of the group and the master is over the bodies that perform a dance-fight and reverse –hands against the ground and feet up to the sky –in a playful way almost to the point of becoming subversive regarding sports effectiveness. In this work of interviews analysis (N=134) and participating observation in fields from various locations in Europe and Brazil, we concentrated on understanding how the career of capoeiristas are generated in Europe. In an interactionist and deeply rooted perspective, we have noticed that Gilberto Freyre’s myth of miscegenation finds a second life ‘outside’. Behind this mask, a first typological model (the micro-firms) reveals a liberal, commercial and patriarchal organization. These structures now train the most deserving members of their rank in the ‘job’ of capoeirista and acknowledge them as teacher, contramestre and more recently as mestre. From a marginal and exotic activity – this intangible cultural product recently recognized as Brazilian Heritage – is now the subject of commercial tensions and territorial stakes. Some make a name for themselves by taking matters into their own hands through the use of the gancho (hook kick), others specialize in socio-cultural activities and a few mark the start of resistance: negaça (evasive move, also called ‘denial move’), malandragem (trickery) and diplomatic jugglery, such are the tools that those ‘dissident’ capoeiristas (second typology) acquired during their socialization with a hint of neo-patrimony. Others still meet around self-organized and participating exchange rodas, by creating locally their terreiros (places) of capoeira. We are witnessing a deterritorialisation process of Brazilian heritage which as the same time produces forms of intercultural relations of ‘mondialité’ referring to Édouard Glissant. Thus, this study shows that the globalization of capoeira can neither lead to a mac’homogenization, nor to its decharacterization, but to the multiple meanings of ways of being and acting of women and men capoeiristas according to three typological models: the patriarchal micro-firms, the néopatrimonial dissidents and the participatory exchange networks

Full textWe know very little about the history of African dances on the continent and their arrival in France. However, there is a history of practices, with several discontinuities in the traditional dances practices that will come from Africa in a new era of dance concert. By producing new forms, the latest of contemporary African dance, African dances necessarily attract attention. The history of dance in Africa, because of his recent choreographic culture, gathers little research and knowledge on present practices. What are these practices? What are the thoughts behind them? Focusing on issues of transmission and teaching, our thesis has a dual perspective of the analysis of dancing gestures, observed in both the systemic and social anthropological aspects. Our review is based on the assumption of a mutation of the meaning and methods of transmission of African dances and, therefore, a transformation of their practices. It questioned these changes, and questions the poetic gesture in dance aesthetics and symbolism. From the emergence of the first courses in African dance highlighting the methods of diffusion or education, to aesthetic and kinesthetic of these dances, the investigation attempts to show how those modes of transmission and education, while having evolved and changed direction, keep the basic principles of African dance, while significantly altering the symbolic significance of the body, and kinesthetic dance. We are witnessing the emergence of original dancing body types, body types of cross-cultural shaping of African dance forms and unusual hybrids

The cuianese part of this area is populated by all the ethnic groups present elsewhere in french guiana, a pluriethnic country, including some groups that have settled on both sides of the border. These groups, descended from ancient or recent migration waves, have a proper and common history. The reality of the region is two-fold on the one hand, the official system, coming from europe, which is here reaching its limits economically and administratively, and on the other hand a border reality thriving in an informal environment that enables contacts between the various groups. The difference between the standards of living of the two countries creates a situation of exchanges that undermines the development process on the guianese side. But in these contacts, in the movements of this informal sector one can notice the elements of development dynamism

Full textActions and decisions most often take place in the presence of others. Previous social psychology studies have shown the effects of social information on external and observable behaviors. In this work, we aim to determine to what extent social information also influences the internal metacognitive monitoring processes underlying cognitive actions and decision-making. Non-verbal social cues (such as gaze direction and facial expressions) constitute an important part of human communication. Here, we have tested (i) whether non-verbal social cues are integrated into the processes of retrospective metacognitive monitoring (i.e. into the assessment of confidence-based judgment); (ii) whether filtering mechanisms are used to modulate the impact of these cues on confidence-based judgment, depending on cue relevance; and (iii) whether participants’ culture (collectivist versus individualist) modulates the impact of these cues on confidence-based judgment. Our work explores these issues through four sets of behavioral studies, two of which also exploring facial expressions using electromyography, and two of which exploring intercultural differences (comparing Japanese and French participants). Overall, we observed that non-verbal social cues that reinforce individuals' choices automatically increase their confidence in those choices, even when the cues are unreliable. The processing of these particular social cues (in the context of the assessment of confidence-based judgment) follow a heuristic pathway. The effects are similar among Japanese and French participants, although somewhat more marked among Japanese participants (i.e. the collectivist culture). The electromyographic recordings of significant facial expressions during the cognitive task likely reflect different mechanisms depending on individuals’ cultural values. We discuss our findings in the context of their clinical and learning applications

Full textDuring the last years, the concept of intercultural competence has developed into becoming a very important key term. Whether it is in the area of education at school or at university, or in the area of professional training of employees in international companies: intercultural competence is often described as key term of the 21st century.Given the advancing globalization and the expansion of international markets towards Asian and South-American regions, our European neighbours may sometimes be left aside in discussions about interculturality. The present thesis focuses on the following two countries: France and Germany. With regard to the Franco-German dialogue and exchange, we observe that these two aspects are sometimes complicated by cultural differences. The present empirical study will analyze in which way and to which extend intercultural competence influences the relations between French and German universities. The empirical study has been conducted as an online survey with 1131 participants. The target group consisted of the following groups: students, doctoral candidates, professors and researchers as well as employees of French and German universities and grandes écoles. The evaluation of the data reveals very significant results with regard to the status quo of the relations between French and German universities. The multiple analyses showed positive aspects, for example a very high mutual interest of the French and Germans for the Franco-German relations, as well as negative aspects, such as a very high rate of intercultural misapprehensions in the Franco-German context. The results of the study offer a basis from which an improvement of the cooperation between French and German universities and intercultural competence in the Franco-German context could be accomplished

Full textThis study is in the field of the didactics of languages and cultures. Its purpose is to study the teaching and learning of French grammar in a Chinese academic environment. It focuses on three central questions: What is the contextualisation of the didactics of grammar in a Chinese academic environment? What metalinguistic activities are used in grammar courses for Chinese learners? How do cultural factors, especially intercultural differences, influence the acquisition of grammar by Chinese students? The method of analysis is a multi-methodological approach. We apply the following procedure: A survey in the form of a remote questionnaire to Chinese students, to provide a local context. An analysis of teaching sessions, the courses recorded at the University of International Studies in Xi'an, to demonstrate the metalinguistic activities and educational culture of the public concerned. Carrying out semi-directive interviews with learners, to allow us to examine the effects of metalinguistic activities and intercultural activities among learners. The results confirm that the consideration of metalinguistic and intercultural reflections is crucial, therefore it is important that these perspectives to improve the didactics of grammar in China are not overlooked

Concerning austria, specially the austro-hungarian empire in the period under fran it is shown, that germany and austria assimilited the literary and artistic expressions, which came from foreign countri symbolism, then italian futurism had strong influences over expressionnism. Then the movement of cabarets, which came from france, was received in the cities of germany and in vienna. In the thirties, there was definitely marked influence, which came from the usa. The work of the bauhaus integrated the movement of applied arts, as it soon developed at the beginning of the 20th centu what is shown, is the all tendencies, specially the expressionistic movement, cannot be studied except from in the international and multi-disciplined point of view. The acceptance of the german tendencies was very limited in france. A real curiosity took place only approximately between 1928 and 1931. This luck of knowledge is acounted for by the polit and the unfavorable judgments, which brought about an unfriendly attitude on the part of the frenchs toward the germans
