Abstract:
Telepathology (TP) as a service in pathology at a distance is now widely used. It is integrated in the daily workflow of numerous pathologists. Meanwhile, in Germany 15 departments of pathology are using the telepathology technique for frozen section service; however, a common recognised quality standard in diagnostic accuracy is still missing. In a first step, the working group Aurich uses a TP system for frozen section service in order to analyse the frequency and sources of errors in TP frozen section diagnoses for evaluating the quality of frozen section slides, the important components of image quality and their influences an diagnostic accuracy. The authors point to the necessity of an optimal training program for all participants in this service in order to reduce the risk of diagnostic errors. In addition, there is need for optimal cooperation of all partners involved in TP service.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to examine the association between the interactive and diagnostic approaches to using controls and Miller and Friesen’s (1984) organizational life cycle (OLC) stages (birth, growth, maturity, revival). Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from a random sample of 343 general managers in Australian manufacturing organizations. Findings The results indicate that both approaches are used to a greater extent in the growth and revival stages than the birth and maturity stages, whereas the interactive and diagnostic approaches are used to a similar extent in each of the four OLC stages. Research limitations/implications This study contributes to the management control system literature by examining the use of the interactive and diagnostic approaches from an OLC perspective. The findings highlight that the complementary nature of the interactive and diagnostic approaches applies in each OLC stages, and suggest that similar attention should be placed on the use of both the interactive and diagnostic approaches in each OLC stage. Practical implications The study provides managers with an insight into the prevalence of the use of interactive and diagnostic approaches across the birth, growth, maturity and revival stages. Originality/value This study contributes to the management control system literature by adopting the configuration approach to examine how multiple contingent variables simultaneously affect the approach to using controls. Specifically, this study examines how organizations adjust their emphasis on Simons’ (1995) interactive and diagnostic approaches to using controls as they move across different development stages. These development stages were labelled as OLC stages and are determined based on the simultaneous consideration of multiple contingent factors.

Abstract:
The aim of this research was to examine the effect of diagnostic control system and interactive control system on organizational performance with organizational capability as intervening variable. Resource-based view theory was used for underlying the association between the variables. The respondents were 84 Financial Institutions in Indonesia. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Model with Warp PLS 3.0. The results show that the diagnostic control system has positive significant effect on organizational capability but no significant effect on organizational performance. Interactive control system is proven to have positive significant effect on organizational capability and organizational performance. Organizational capability is proven not to mediate the association between diagnostic control system and organizational performance, but it mediates partially the association between interactive control system and organizational performance partially.

Abstract:
PurposeThis study aims to investigate how dynamic tensions between performance measurement system (PMS) uses enable organizations to achieve both exploitation and exploration and enhance firm performance.Design/methodology/approachThe authors collected survey data on 153 Italian companies. Scales for each construct were validated through an exploratory factor analysis. Data on firm performance were cross-validated by using lagged accounting data. The authors tested our hypotheses using hierarchical ordinary least squares regressions, together with bootstrapping procedures for the test on mediation.FindingsA diagnostic use of PMS has a positive association with both exploitation – e.g. reductions in total costs and lead times – and exploration, e.g. introduction of new products and extension of product ranges. The dynamic tension created by a joint diagnostic and interactive use has the strongest association with organizational ambidexterity, measured as the multiplicative interaction between exploration and exploitation.Practical implicationsIf an organization or business unit is mainly pursuing exploitative goals, a mainly diagnostic use of PMS would be most suitable. If goals are both exploitative and explorative, a mix of diagnostic and interactive uses would be most effective.Originality/valueThis research helps reconcile conflicting views in the literature. The diagnostic use of PMS, far from acting as a “negative force,” appears to be necessary to guide opportunity search and to establish an appropriate scope for exploration-related activities. The authors’ focus on the uses of PMSs shows that ambidexterity is achieved through managerial capability, rather than just through the introduction of systems and structures.

Abstract:
Agricultural high throughput diagnostics need to be fast, accurate and have multiplexing capacity. Metagenomic sequencing is being widely evaluated for plant and animal diagnostics. Bioinformatic analysis of metagenomic sequence data has been a bottleneck for diagnostic analysis due to the size of the data files. Most available tools for analyzing high-throughput sequencing (HTS) data require that the user have computer coding skills and access to high-performance computing. To overcome constraints to most sequencing-based diagnostic pipelines today, we have developed Microbe Finder (MiFi®). MiFi® is a web application for quick detection and identification of known pathogen species/strains in raw, unassembled HTS metagenomic data. HTS-based diagnostic tools developed through MiFi® must pass rigorous validation, which is outlined in this manuscript. MiFi® allows researchers to collaborate in the development and validation of HTS-based diagnostic assays using MiProbe™, a platform used for developing pathogen-specific e-probes. Validated e-probes are made available to diagnosticians through MiDetect™. Here we describe the e-probe development, curation and validation process of MiFi® using grapevine pathogens as a model system. MiFi® can be used with any pathosystem and HTS platform after e-probes have been validated.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Using an online survey of 468 U.S. employees from diverse industries and professions, we provide empirical evidence that management control system design choices can affect autonomous motivation in employees. Drawing on self-determination theory and the levers of control framework, we predict and find that employee autonomous motivation is positively associated with the use of beliefs control systems and interactive control systems and negatively associated with the use of diagnostic control systems. Moreover, we find that the joint use of diagnostic and interactive controls is positively associated with autonomous motivation. We also find a positive association between employees' autonomous motivation and individual self-reported effort, job performance, and creativity. Additional analyses examine the sources of motivation behind these results, focusing on identified motivation. The theory and results of our study provide a potential explanation for the recent trend in practice of organizations increasingly emphasizing their values and higher purposes. Abstract:
The multimediality systems are specifically informatics procedures. These allow the contemporary presentation and the active interaction on the monitor of a personal computer of texts, dias, videomovies, animations. Our study presents an interactive-multimediality system for the training of the urologist in medical school. The object of the development at this moment is the presentation and illustration of the urethrocystoscopic procedure. The graphic interface allows the user the choice of modality, e.g. text, animation, videomovie or dia; the user “clicks” on the icon and the system starts; the modality can be changed at any time to have a better visualization of the problem. The user can choose to read or hear the text. The development of the system will be a complete teaching media for endourologic diagnostic and therapeutic methods. In the future the virtual reality will be very interesting: the student will be able to read, see and verify the pathologies and the therapeutic methods on the computer before real application on the human body.

Abstract:
Managerial Accounting and the Strategy have in common the issue of organizational performance; the first has as the objective of performance measuring the second focuses on how the organizations can obtain performance through competitive advantages. An approach used by the Strategy is the Resource-Based View, through this point of view, the performance is maximized by the company organizational competences, but in this competences search, the organizations use the Management Control System - MCS. Depending on how the MCS is used diagnostically or interactively, or in a combination of both, this can contribute to the competences development and the dynamic tensions balance and indirectly, influence the organizational performance. Originated by the Henri (2006) theoretical model this study proposal is to contribute for this relationship understanding in the 1,000 Brazilian biggest companies, using the multivariate statistic technique Structural Equation Modeling with the estimation method Partial Least Square PLS. The result in a total of 104 companies indicates that (i) there are no evidences of negative relationship between the diagnostic use and the organizational competences development, suggesting that in Brazil, the diagnostic use can have a minor dysfunctional component, and also, that the diagnostic use can be seen as an organizational routine needed to maintain the organization in a planned path, which is not incompatible with the competences development ; (ii) there are no meaningful positive relationships between the competence development and the economical performance, measured by the Return on Equity, which is coherent with the Henri (2006), suggesting that there must be other variables not contemplated in the model, or even that the indicator ROE might not be an adequate proxy of development in the years of 2005-2007; (iii) there is a relationship between the interactive use and the development of competences, excepting the enterprising, which is consistent with Henri (2006) results; there is a positive relation between the dynamic tensions and the competences, which is aligned with Henri (2006) and validates the theory that the tensions are important for the search of the organizational effectiveness (v) diagnostic use and interactive use of the MCS have a positive influence on the dynamic tensions, being able to configure the MCS as an additional resource in the RBV framework ; (vi) when the development measurement is made by self-evaluation, there happens a results change of the relations between competences and performance, with the organizational learning competences and market orientation having a positive influence on the performance, indicating that this two competences/orientations must be stimulates by the MCS use. The research results have some limitation; the main one is that the answers reflect the perception of corporate controllers and finance managers The data analyses did not take in account the stratification by economical sector. These limitations enhance future researches, such as its reply using others professional profiles ; the use cases study methodology in companies with different cultural and performance profiles, and more accurate studies of the usage dimension of specific competences and the same construct deriving from other fields of knowledge.

This paper investigated the associations between the usage of management reports for managers of business units from a retail company, the effectiveness of decisions and performance. To do this, we adopted the Mahama and Cheng (2013) model to measure the perceived benefits on usage of management reports, Widener (2007) to measure the intensity of usage of reports and cost of attention, and Baum and Wally (2003) to measuring the speed of decisions. We have also performed a quantitative analysis of the data obtained by combining survey data with historical data of the company. The results showed that there is a positive and significant statistical relationship between the perceived benefit of management reports and the intensity of their usage and the intensity of usage is positively associated with taking a more rapid, efficient and comprehensive decision. Moreover, most decision speed is related to improved financial performance and greater coverage of the decision is negatively associated with non-financial and financial performance. The main limitation of this study lies in the fact that the survey reflects the reality of a particular organization, so any generalizations should be avoided. Moreover, the results suggest that the company should invest in spreading the benefits of the use of management reports as a way to improve organizational performance.

Abstract:
Atherosclerosis is a disease of the cardiovascular system where a stenosis may develop in an artery which is an abnormal narrowing in the blood vessel that adversely affects the blood flow. Due to the constriction of the blood vessel, the flow is disturbed, forming a jet and recirculation downstream of the stenosis. Dynamic pressure fluctuations on the inner wall of the blood vessel leads to the vibration of the vessel structure and acoustic energy is propagated through the surrounding tissue that can be detected on the skin surface. Acoustic energy radiating from the interaction of blood flow and stenotic blood vessel carries valuable information from a diagnostic perspective. In this study, a constricted blood flow is modeled by using ADINA finite element analysis software together with the blood vessel in the form of a thin cylindrical shell with an idealized blunt constriction. The flow is considered as incompressible and Newtonian. Water properties at indoor temperature are used for the fluid model. The diameter of the modeled vessel is 6.4 mm with 87% area reduction at the throat of the stenosis. The flow is investigated for Reynolds numbers 1000 and 2000. The problem is handled in three parts which are rigid wall Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solution, structural analysis of fluid filled cylindrical shell, and Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) solutions of fluid flow and vessel structure. The pressure fluctuations and consequential vessel wall vibrations display broadband spectral content over a range of several hundred Hz with strong fluid-structural coupling. Maximum dynamic pressure and vibration amplitudes are observed around the reattachment point of the flow near the exit of the stenosis and this effect gradually decreases along downstream of flow. Results obtained by the numerical simulations are compared with relevant studies in the literature and it is concluded that ADINA can be used to investigate these types of problems involving high frequency pressure fluctuations of the fluid and the resulting vibratory motion of the surrounding blood vessel structure.

The purpose of this research is to explore the relationships between perceived environmental uncertainty (PEU), organizational structure, technology and management control systems (MCS) diagnostic and interactive uses in the Portuguese financial services industry. The study is built upon the Contingency Theory and the Levers of Control framework and employs PLS-SEM to conduct the analyses on data from a survey of 50 firms. Results indicate that higher levels of PEU are associated with organizational structures that are more decentralized and that exhibit a higher degree of specification and specialization of tasks. This study also finds that higher levels of PEU are associated with a more intense use of MCS for diagnostic and interactive purposes. Additionally, results suggest that firms exhibiting higher centralization and lower levels of task specification and specialization will tend to use more intensively a lower number of MCS than more decentralized firms with higher levels of specification and specialization of tasks. Finally, the association between technology and MCS diagnostic and interactive uses were not found to be statistically significant.

Abstract:
Increasing interest in productivity, safety and environmental issues have highlighted the area of maintenance and reliability. The increasing cost of maintenance covers both preservation and sustainable exploitation of resources and awareness in maintaining equipment in a way to ensure return on investment both in the short and long run. The information obtained from condition monitoring of existing turbine, plant, rails and pumps can provide an important basis for dimensioning of future systems and components. The main objective of this research work is to develop and apply methods for efficient condition monitoring, and hence reduce maintenance costs and provide a framework for development and implementation of computer based decision tools. Furthermore, methods enabling existing process data and cost effective transducers to be used together with modern data analysis and diagnostic tools for condition monitoring of complex mechanical systems have been examined and prototypes developed. The areas of investigation covered in this work are hydropower turbines, rails and the main cooling pumps in a nuclear power-plant. The interest in diagnostics for hydropower turbines was driven by the obvious risk of contamination of water by oil leaks and expensive refurbishments caused by wear of the Kaplan turbine vane bearings. The intrest in risk analysis was motivated by Vattenfall's intrest in gaining knowledge about the state of all turbines in the company. The aim of this project was to develop a generic model of hydropower turbine behavior using physics-based models based on material properties, load tolerances, etc.. An important question was whether it was possible to predict the wear rate and plan predictive replacement or maintenance. A systematic approach to find failure modes, their effects, their causes and consequences in combination with Fault Tree Analysis was needed. The objective of this project was to examine a systematic approach to map failure modes and their causes in an hydropower turbine. We have restricted the study to turbine units of the Kaplan, Francis and tube types. The objective of the study concerning rail track was to develop methods and equipment for detection of surface damage in rail track rail in addition to the present system of practice of visual examination. The equipment developed has to be used to obtain objective statistical data for evaluating maintenance methods and efforts. We have restricted the study to spalling and headchecks on the rail head surface and running edge. The method developed enables measurements of different types of surface damage such as spalling and shelling to be made with inductive transducers sensitive to the distance to the measured object. The assumption here is that the damage being detected is characterized by the absence of material from rail surface. The main object of condition monitoring of the cooling pumps was to be able to detect bearing wear in order to be able to plan and carry out restoration well ahead of breakdown or bearing seizure. The study was restricted to the main cooling pump motor and its main bearings. Condition monitoring of the pumps was done using a method based on current measurements. Analysis of the currents on the main cooling pump of the power plant proved that it is possible to monitor the condition of the pump in spite of the presence of electronic frequency converters which distorts the signal.

Abstract:
Background: Strategic renewal is a phenomenon where companies decide to do strategic alterations with the aim to improve their stasis in the current market (Kiesler & Sproull, 1982). This can be accomplished in several ways; in this report the focus is on management control systems and how they are incorporated in the strategic implementation process in order to drive and generate renewal. Management control systems are considered to be an important aspect of the strategy process (Simons, 1994). Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to analyze to what extent and in what form interactive and diagnostic management control systems are employed in large organizations in order to drive strategic renewal. Methodology: This is a qualitative research with an abductive approach that is based on a single case study. Through interviews we answer how management control systems are used in the implementation process of strategic renewal on different levels of an organization; we have made ten interviews with top-, middle- and operational management.  Conclusion: Our main finding is that the process of implementing a successful strategic renewal through the adoption of MCS is not a linear one. The process is continuous and conducted in a circular manner; this also implies the interrelation of the variables.

Abstract:

In the late 1980s, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) investigated the use of computer-based technology to improve diagnostic troubleshooting methods. One such technology was demonstrated in an Interactive Fault Diagnosis and Isolation System (IFDIS) that was produced by Competitive Advantage Technology Pty Ltd under direction from the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO). This paper describes a new design which aims to improve the long-term supportability of such diagnostic systems by making the maximum use of commercial software, producing clear separation of technical information from any software elements, writing all non-standard software using defined standards and generally making the most possible use of the advances in computing over the last ten years. The system is now in field trial with the aim of developing procedures and specifications for production.

Abstract:
The operation and maintenance of large combustion turbines for electric power generation can be enhanced by training plant operators and maintenance technicians using Digital Video Interactive (DVI®) technology. DVI® is an all digital format for generating motion video, audio, animation, and graphics and still images. Using DVI® for visual information display provides effective training that encompasses both functional and diagnostic training, and can be augmented by on-line access to gas turbine documentation. The success of DVI® as a training vehicle is expected to be patterned after the success of interactive videodisc with the added advantage of an all digital format. DVI® is being integrated with other advanced technologies including expert systems and intelligent tutoring to form a complete informational resource for diagnostic training, visual data bases, and post disturbance analysis and blade inspection. These informational resources can be applied to on-site training using a new low-cost portable delivery system combining powerful microcomputers, dual visual displays, and large disk storage media. This portable information system is an outgrowth of the EPRI research into field troubleshooting based upon the SA*VANT® system. SA*VANT® is a portable computer-based expert system advisor to aid technicians in troubleshooting the Westinghouse 501 during fail-to-start situations.

Abstract:
The present work describes the ergonomics and usability preliminary tests regarding the human upper limb kinematics and strength evaluation of two diagnostic portable ultrasound scanners. The tests were performed by one expert sonographer in vivo on one subject in abdominal and vascular clinical applications and in vitro using a dynamometer. The two portable systems had different user interfaces and probe design: one system had traditionally-designed probes, a classic Soft keys interactive Menu, placed in the lower part of the screen, with toggles and buttons for the activation and adjustment of the functions, then a physical qwerty keyboard and a control panel. The other system had appleprobe-designed transducers, a touch screen integrated in the control panel with an interactive user interface and reduced number of physical buttons. Comparisons between the two systems considering the sonographer’s use are provided. Motion Analysis and Superficial Electromyography results will be presented and discussed on both systems regarding tests in vivo and in vitro only concerning Superficial Electromyography.

Abstract:
Gas turbines are widely used, highly critical, components for generating electrical power and propulsion on modern US Navy ships. Increasing numbers of sensors and sophisticated health management systems are being integrated into shipboard systems to enhance monitoring, performance, diagnostic, and maintenance planning capabilities. Development of a decision support tool to fuse multiple independent system health indicators provides the US military with a readily deployable technology for enabling comprehensive assessment of overall system platform health and mission readiness. This technology leverages existing open source data systems and on-board diagnostic and prognostic modules to efficiently and seamlessly employ advanced reasoning and self-learning techniques to predict high level system health and readiness from component level inputs. This paper summarizes the work associated with development of a software application to provide real-time mission readiness assessment for US Navy ships. The application incorporates several novel approaches including use of a uniform gray-scale method for identifying system health and readiness; fusion of multiple independent low-level indicators to predict overall system health and readiness; methodologies to account for the interactive effects of interconnected subsystems on overall system health and readiness; and use of self learning techniques to provide continuous refinement to future system health and readiness predictions.

Abstract:
In the last decade, mobile interactive electronic technical manuals - IETM - have become a modern means of competence support for personnel operating aircraft. The system of technical regulation distinguishes several classes of IETM according to the degree of their functional equipment. The highest classes of functional development of IETM presuppose their deep integration into on-board automation systems, the possibility of direct interface interaction with electronic diagnostic modules for accompanying products and wide integration of artificial intelligence tools. In turn, the inclusion of elements of artificial intelligence leads to a change in statistical approaches and principles for assessing the quality of the IETM themselves. This is due to the fact of continuous change in the consumer properties of IETM in the process of their use, the observed heteroscedasticity of the recorded values of indicators when assessing their quality. This article is devoted to the description of the methodology that allows to overcome the described specifics of the procedures for assessing the quality of IETM with elements of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of digital health interventions in monitoring and improving medication adherence in Multiple Sclerosis patients. Condition being studied: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most prevalent chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS), which leads to focal lesions in the white matter, characterized by selective primary demyelination with partial preservation of axons and reactive astrocytic gliosis. The disease is thought to be due to a complex interaction between different genetic and environmental factors. The prevalence of MS is rising all over the world, due on one hand to earlier diagnosis and prolonged survival, and on the other to a true increase in incidence of the disease. The diagnosis of MS remains clinical despite recent advances in diagnostics and relies on demonstrating dissemination in space and time while excluding alternative diagnoses.

Full text
Abstract:
Mycoplasma bovis and M. agalactiae are two phylogenetically related mycoplasmas which cause economically significant diseases in their respective bovine or small ruminant hosts. These organisms cause persistent asymptomatic infections that can result in severe outbreaks upon introduction of carrier animals into susceptible herds. Little is known about the mechanisms underlying mycoplasma-host interaction, variation in virulence, or of the factors enabling avoidance of the host immune system. In recent years it has become apparent that the ability of pathogenic microorganisms to rapidly alter surface antigenic structures and to fine tune their antigenicity, a phenomena called antigenic variation, is one of the most effective strategies used to escape immune destruction and to establish chronic infections. Our discovery of a novel genetic system, mediating antigenic variation in M. bovis (vsp) as well as in M. agalactiae (avg) served as a starting point for our proposal which included the following objectives: (i) Molecular and functional characterization of the variable surface lipoproteins (Vsp) system of M. bovis and comparison with the Vsp-counterpart in M. agalactiae (ii) Determination of the role of Vsp proteins in the survival of M. bovis when confronted by host defense factors, (iii) Assessment of Vsp-based genetic and antigenic typing of M. bovis and M. agalactiae for epidemiology of infection and (iv) Improvement of diagnostic tests for M. bovis and M. agalactiae based on the vsp-and vsp-analogous systems. We have carried out an extensive molecular characterization of the vsp system and unravelled the precise molecular mechanism responsible for the generation of surface antigenic variation in M. bovis. Our data clearly demonstrated that the two pathogenic mycoplasma species possess large gene families encoding variable lipoprotein antigens that apparently play an important role in immune evasion and in pathogen-host interaction during infection. Phase variable production of these antigens was found to be mediated by a novel molecular mechanism utilizing double site-specific DNA inversions via an intermediate vsp configuration. Studies in model systems indicate that phase variation of VspA is relevant in interaction between M. bovis and macrophages or monocytes, a crucial stage in pathogenesis. Using an ELISA test with captured VspA as an antigen, phase variation was shown to occur in vivo and under field conditions. Genomic rearrangements in the avg gene family of M. agalactiae were shown to occur in vivo and may well have a role in evasion of host defences and establishment of chronic infection. An epidemiological study indicated that patterns of vsp-related antigenic variation diverge rapidly in an M. bovis infected herd. Marked divergence was also found with avg-based genomic typing of M. agalactiae in chronically infected sheep. However, avg-genomic fingerprints were found to be relatively homogeneous in different animals during acute stages of an outbreak of Contagious Agalactiae, and differ between unrelated outbreaks. These data support the concept of vsp-based genomic typing but indicate the necessity for further refinement of the methodology. The molecular knowledge on these surface antigens and their encoding genes provides the basis for generating specific recombinant tools and serological methods for serodiagnosis and epidemiological purposes. Utilization of these methods in the field may allow differentiating acutely infected herds from chronic herds and disease-free herds. In addition the highly immunogenic nature of these lipoproteins may facilitate the design of protective vaccine against mycoplasma infections.

The authors analyzed the specifics of toys with AR-applications, interactive alphabets, coloring books, encyclopedias and art books of Ukrainian and foreign writers, which should be used in working with children of preschool and primary school age; the possibilities of books for preschool children created with the help of augmented reality technologies are demonstrated. The relevance of the use of AR for the effective education and development of preschoolers and primary school children is determined. Problems in the application of AR in the educational process of modern domestic preschool education institutions are outlined. A method of diagnostic research of the level and features of readiness of future teachers to use AR in the educational process of preschool and primary education has been developed. Criteria, indicators are defined, the levels of development of the main components of the studied readiness (motivational, cognitive, activity) are characterized. The insufficiency of its formation in future teachers in the field of preschool and primary education; inconsistency between the peculiarities of training future teachers to use AR in professional activities and modern requirements for the quality of the educational process; the need to develop and implement a holistic system of formation of the studied readiness of future teachers in the conditions of higher pedagogical education are proved. A model of forming the readiness of future teachers to use AR in the educational process of preschool and primary education has been developed.

Integrated Approach to Evaluating Inherited Predictors of Resistance to Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome (Ascites) in Fast Growing Broiler Chickens. United States Department of Agriculture, December 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2000.7575287.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Background PHS (pulmonary hypertension syndrome, ascites syndrome) is a serious cause of loss in the broiler industry, and is a prime example of an undesirable side effect of successful genetic development that may be deleteriously manifested by factors in the environment of growing broilers. Basically, continuous and pinpointed selection for rapid growth in broilers has led to higher oxygen demand and consequently to more frequent manifestation of an inherent potential cardiopulmonary incapability to sufficiently oxygenate the arterial blood. The multifaceted causes and modifiers of PHS make research into finding solutions to the syndrome a complex and multi threaded challenge. This research used several directions to better understand the development of PHS and to probe possible means of achieving a goal of monitoring and increasing resistance to the syndrome. Research Objectives (1) To evaluate the growth dynamics of individuals within breeding stocks and their correlation with individual susceptibility or resistance to PHS; (2) To compile data on diagnostic indices found in this work to be predictive for PHS, during exposure to experimental protocols known to trigger PHS; (3) To conduct detailed physiological evaluations of cardiopulmonary function in broilers; (4) To compile data on growth dynamics and other diagnostic indices in existing lines selected for susceptibility or resistance to PHS; (5) To integrate growth dynamics and other diagnostic data within appropriate statistical procedures to provide geneticists with predictive indices that characterize resistance or susceptibility to PHS. Revisions In the first year, the US team acquired the costly Peckode weigh platform / individual bird I.D. system that was to provide the continuous (several times each day), automated weighing of birds, for a comprehensive monitoring of growth dynamics. However, data generated were found to be inaccurate and irreproducible, so making its use implausible. Henceforth, weighing was manual, this highly labor intensive work precluding some of the original objectives of using such a strategy of growth dynamics in selection procedures involving thousands of birds. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements 1. Healthy broilers were found to have greater oscillations in growth velocity and acceleration than PHS susceptible birds. This proved the scientific validity of our original hypothesis that such differences occur. 2. Growth rate in the first week is higher in PHS-susceptible than in PHS-resistant chicks. Artificial neural network accurately distinguished differences between the two groups based on growth patterns in this period. 3. In the US, the unilateral pulmonary occlusion technique was used in collaboration with a major broiler breeding company to create a commercial broiler line that is highly resistant to PHS induced by fast growth and low ambient temperatures. 4. In Israel, lines were obtained by genetic selection on PHS mortality after cold exposure in a dam-line population comprising of 85 sire families. The wide range of PHS incidence per family (0-50%), high heritability (about 0.6), and the results in cold challenged progeny, suggested a highly effective and relatively easy means for selection for PHS resistance 5. The best minimally-invasive diagnostic indices for prediction of PHS resistance were found to be oximetry, hematocrit values, heart rate and electrocardiographic (ECG) lead II waves. Some differences in results were found between the US and Israeli teams, probably reflecting genetic differences in the broiler strains used in the two countries. For instance the US team found the S wave amplitude to predict PHS susceptibility well, whereas the Israeli team found the P wave amplitude to be a better valid predictor. 6. Comprehensive physiological studies further increased knowledge on the development of PHS cardiopulmonary characteristics of pre-ascitic birds, pulmonary arterial wedge pressures, hypotension/kidney response, pulmonary hemodynamic responses to vasoactive mediators were all examined in depth. Implications, scientific and agricultural Substantial progress has been made in understanding the genetic and environmental factors involved in PHS, and their interaction. The two teams each successfully developed different selection programs, by surgical means and by divergent selection under cold challenge. Monitoring of the progress and success of the programs was done be using the in-depth estimations that this research engendered on the reliability and value of non-invasive predictive parameters. These findings helped corroborate the validity of practical means to improve PHT resistance by research-based programs of selection.
