Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to expand research on joint remembering into real-world complex collaborative activities at the workplace. The text illustrates how the interweaving of verbal, corporal, social, and material resources supports joint remembering of relevant aspects of work projects during group interactions. As joint remembering does not represent a ubiquitous joint action in complex collaborative activities in the workplace, but rather a localized and goal-oriented interactional mechanism, here we focus on those interactional sequences concerning past actions and events, in relation to work projects, that are triggered by questions acting as reminders. Such sequences are called “multimodal remembering sequences.” The group interactions that are presented as illustrative examples to support our theoretical standpoint were taken from a corpus collected on the basis of two naturalistic studies on joint remembering collaborative design conducted with architects and animation designers at their workplaces.

Brown, Steven D., and Paula Reavey. Rethinking Function, Self, and Culture in “Difficult” Autobiographical Memories. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190230814.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
The sociocultural model of autobiographical memory focuses on the narrative or storied nature of autobiographical memories and the role of adult–child interactions in scaffolding these stories. Work in discursive psychology extends this interactional focus and demonstrates the action orientation of jointly constructed narratives. However, in this work, there is hitherto little differentiation made among types of autobiographical narratives. Memories of “difficult” or “painful” events, such as sexual violence, neglect, physical injury, and “traumatic” experiences, present particular challenges in terms of narrative organization, interaction, and agency. Speakers must demonstrate responsibility in how they recruit one another into such narratives. Where there is a power asymmetry, this can involve a collaborative “managed accessibility” for memories of particularly distressing details. This chapter provides a conceptual scheme for approaching “vital memories” of these sorts and discusses the importance of their temporal and affective organization within experience.

Abstract:
When one family member or spouse gradually loses the ability both to tell stories and to remember shared events and stories due to dementia, this is often experienced as very distressing by other family members—especially in families that honor storytelling. In those cases, not being able to tell stories and cherish the common history is a potential threat both to the experience of belonging together and to the participants’ individual and shared identities, as well as their stories about their past. Most spouses and family members try to remediate the communicative problems caused by the progressing dementia by taking over some of the functions lost by the person with dementia through collaborative compensatory adaptation. Other participants who take over interactional and narrative functions assume some of the responsibility for the storytelling. In this sense collaborative storytelling becomes an important way for couples to retain their relationship.
