Foulds-Elliott, Susannah Deborah. "Respiration in operatic singing: Intention to communicate." University of Sydney. Communication Sciences and Disorders, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/657.

Abstract:
Professional operatic singing can be performed technically for practice and rehearsal, or with heightened emotion through intention to communicate with an audience. Previous studies of respiration in operatic singing have not taken into account the professional performers ability to differentiate at will between rehearsal and performance modes of singing. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the differences between singing with intention to communicate (as if performing) and singing technically (as if in rehearsal). The hypothesis is that this specified change of condition would change the respiratory patterns employed by the singers. Estimation of respiratory patterns was obtained using magnetometers. Performance singing was labelled IC (intention to communicate). Rehearsal singing was labelled T (technical) and also included TL (technical loud) and TS (technical soft). Each of the five singers performed two tasks (a free choice aria in Italian, and a set song). Only intra-subject analysis was used. One thousand and one breaths were analysed. These were then matched, so that only complete musical phrases (sung six times by the same singer) were compared with each other. Seven hundred and sixty-two matched phrases were analysed in this way. Measured variables were initiation lung volume (ILV), termination lung volume (TLV), the amount of lung volume expired (LVE), %VC released per second (Flow), the expiratory time (Te), and inspiratory time (Ti). Sound pressure level (SPL) was measured. This study also examined the ability of experienced listeners to distinguish between the T and IC performances from DAT recordings. Findings show that in comparison with T singing, IC singing used more air, with a greater percentage of vital capacity expired per second, but without a simple association with sound pressure level or expiratory time. Listeners were able to distinguish IC from T performances, demonstrating a perceived difference in the quality of the vocal output. These results demonstrate that performance intention to communicate, compared to rehearsal, results in a measurable difference in respiratory parameters, and therefore needs to be specified in future research.

Abstract:
Communication between humans and interactive robots will benefit if people have a clear mental model of the robots' intent and awareness. The aim with this thesis was to investigate how human-robot interaction is affected by manipulation of social cues on the robot. The research questions were: How do social cues affect mental models of the Pepper robot, and how can a participatory design method be used for investigating how the Pepper robot could communicate intent and awareness? The hypothesis for the second question was that nonverbal cues would be preferred over verbal cues. An existing standard platform was used, Softbank's Pepper, as well as state-of-the-art tasks from the RoboCup@Home challenge. The rule book and observations from the 2018 competition were thematically coded and the themes created eight scenarios. A participatory design method called PICTIVE was used in a design study, where five student participants went through three phases, label, sketch and interview, to create a design for how the robot should communicate intent and awareness. The use of PICTIVE was a suitable way to extract a lot of design ideas. However, not all scenarios were optimal for the task. The design study confirmed the use of mediating physical attributes to alter the mental model of a humanoid robot to reach common ground. Further, it did not confirm the hypothesis that nonverbal cues would be preferred over verbal cues, though it did show that verbal cues would not be enough. This, however, needs to be further tested in live interactions.

Abstract:
The purpose of this quantitative study is to examine receiver variables involved in strategic communications and to look specifically at the use of graphic images in strategic communication materials. It argues that any complete, general model of persuasion effects will include both goal compatibility and emotional determinants. It argues that some influential theories used in strategic communications scholarship, including the situational theory of publics and the elaboration likelihood model, are incomplete because they have omitted these variables. This study also tests variables related to willingness to communicate, behavioral intention, and attitude towards the organization. These variables are drawn from prominent, well-tested theories in strategic communications, and used to begin building a new model of the effects of messages featuring graphic images.

Lemeunier, Thierry.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Virtual Reality plays a major role in developing new educational methodologies, and allows to develop virtual environments for learning where intelligent virtual agents play the role of tutors. These agents are expected to help human users to learn and apply domain-specific procedures with predefined learning outcomes. We work on building a real-time system able to sustain natural interaction with the user in a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). To implement this model, we propose to use the Multi-Agent System for Collaborative, Adaptive & Realistic Environments for Training (MASCARET) as an Intelligent Virtual Environment (IVE) model that provides the knowledge base to the agents and model the semantic of the virtual environment and user’s activities. To formalize the intention of the agents, we implement a cognitive module within MASCARET inspired by BDI (Belief-Desire-Intention) architecture that permits us to generate high-level intentions for the agents. Furthermore, we integrate Embodied Conversational Agents (ECA), which are based on the SAIBA (Situation, Agent, Intention, Behavior, Animation) framework. The embodied agents of the environment have communicative intentions that are transmitted to the user through natural communication channels, namely the verbal and non-verbal communicative acts and behaviors of the ECAs. To evaluate our model, we implement it in a concrete pedagogical scenario for learning blood analysis procedures in a biomedical laboratory. We use this application to settle an experiment to validate the propositions of our model. The hypothesis of this experiment is to assume that the presence of anECA in a Virtual Environment (VE) enhances the learning performance (or at least does not degrade it) in the context of a learning procedure. The performance is represented by the time of execution, the number of committed errors and the number of requests for assistance. We analyze the results of this evaluation, which partially confirms the hypothesis of the experiment and assure that having an ECA in the VLE does not degrade the performance of the learner in the context of a learning procedure

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to design a logic of the behavior of an artificial agent that interacts rationally with a human. The rationality of her behavior enables her on the one hand to build and follow communication plans and on the other hand to follow communication conventions. Our research is oriented towards a logical model of the agent's reasoning about what she says and feels with the aim of making her interactions with a human the most natural for the latter. The first step of our work was to extend a logic modeling belief update such that the update follows a communication's protocol. In this framework, an agent following the rules of cooperative behavior respects coherence between what she believes, what is the case, and what she can say according to her communication plan. The second step concerned the agent's expression of emotions. This modeling builds on primitives representing what an agent says, what she could have done, her representation of the world and her desires and moral values

Abstract:
The article presents the results of the analysis of the communicative strategy of criticism realized in the English cinema discourse. The research is done within the methodological framework of the cognitive-discursive approach to language where the criticism communicative strategy is viewed as a verbal / co-verbal expression of a negative assessment of a certain object (usually, a person) as demonstrating behaviour that deviates from the ontological (utilitarian) norms. The communicative intention of the subject of criticism is realised through verbal and co-verbal actions which interact on the principles of coordination. The verbal expression of criticism can be explicit, employing, among other means, negatively coloured nouns and adjectives, or implicit, employing rhetoric questions or any other linguistic units that can be interpreted as criticism in the situation of communication. Verbal utterances of criticism can be self-addressed to express self-criticism. The theoretical value of the research is determined by the implementation of the cognitive-discursive approach which makes it possible to analyse a speech strategy as a cognitive phenomenon, and its practical value is determined by the possibility of using the methodical technique developed in the paper to analyse other communicative strategies.

Abstract:
Abstract The present longitudinal follow-up study had two main goals. Firstly, this study aimed to describe aspects of maternal interactive/communicative behaviour that could be considered constitutive in sensitive responsiveness. Secondly and most importantly, it aimed to find predictive relations between characteristics of mother-infant interaction around the onset of infant intentional communication and subsequent child communicative and linguistic development. The participants were 27 Finnish-speaking mothers and their healthy first-born infants. Analyses of the amount and types of maternal and infant communicative acts as well as maternal responses to infant signals were carried out from videotaped free-play samples at the infants' age of 10 months. In addition, the CARE-Index was used to rate maternal sensitivity and infant co-operativity. At 12 months, children's communicative and linguistic skills were assessed by using the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories and the Communication and Symbolic Behaviour Scales. At 30 months, the Reynell Developmental Language Scales III was used to assess comprehensive and expressive language. The results suggest that maternal activity in eliciting interaction and conversational interchanges is characteristic of sensitive responsiveness around the onset of infant intentionality. However, very distinctive aspects of verbal behaviour that might be constitutive in sensitive responsiveness were not found — probably as a result of considerable individual variation in all aspects of maternal as well as infant interactive/communicative behaviour that were analysed. As predictors of communicative and linguistic skills at 12 months, both maternal and infant characteristics made a significant contribution. In general, the predictive relations found were quite specific. In turn, except for the predictive validity of maternal sensitivity for comprehensive language at 30 months, later language outcomes were predicted only by children's communicative and linguistic skills at 12 months, suggesting that over time, language development becomes increasingly child-driven. Individual differences in early communicative capacities may also to some extent mask the language-facilitating effects of parenting. On the other hand, some potentially facilitating effects of parental behaviour may be elicited by the infant's well-advanced communicative skills. The importance to acknowledge transactional processes in parent-child interaction is highlighted — both in future research and clinical applications.

Abstract:
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a condition that generates difficulties in the social aspect of people because their abilities, mainly communicative skills, are affected at different levels in each case; this is why it is stated that the treatments for this are more effective while they are carried out in the early childhood period of the patient. There are multiple conventional and alternative treatments, and inside the latest mentioned there is one that uses music as its main resource. In this sense, the research objective has been to analyze the concept, characteristics, types of treatments and benefits of music treatments for children that suffer from ASD. To do this, it has been done an extensive review of several articles and research work carried out by different professionals, specialists and students worldwide. The present work is concluded by affirming the effectiveness of music treatments in children with ASD over other alternative and conventional treatments because the benefits that this provides are reflected in a notable and prolonged increase of the communicative intention of these ones, as well as in a better use of their language and vocabulary. However, there are factors that prevent the full use of the therapeutic benefits which must be solved to achieve a responsible application of the treatment for the benefit of the integral development of children. These factors are the lack of prepared professionals and the use of inadequate spaces that lack of resources for sessions.

Abstract:
For students of English as a foreign language (EFL), a certain level of knowledge of vocabulary is required for successful communication to occur. Based on personal experiences in the classroom which have shown that students often lack language variation, accuracy, coherence and descriptiveness, this paper deals with the issue of teaching vocabulary in a more conscientious and focused way to help ensure that students will become more competent in using the language effectively. The Swedish curriculum for English, LGR11, is built up around the ideology known as communicative language teaching (CLT). This entails that as long as a learner is exposed to a foreign language, and has sufficient opportunities to use that language, the learning of the language will occur. The results of this paper suggest that we cannot only rely on a pure form of CLT for students to reach higher ability levels, but that a certain amount of focused vocabulary teaching, in context with classroom activities, is also necessary.

Abstract:
The present study investigates the translation of dialectal elements in literary texts from the German and Swedish linguistical and cultural areas. Translation theory generally advises against the translation of dialectal elements in standard language texts thereby implicitly questioning their creative and communicative function. The aim of the study is to investigate to what extent the dialectal elements in the source text are translated by corresponding dialectal elements in the target text thereby promoting a "cultural transfer" or whether a translation method based on translation theory is used. The linguistic material from the novels Die Räuberbande by the German author Leonhard Frank, Tjärdalen by the Swedish author Sara Lidman and Kapten Nemos bibliotek by the Swedish author Per Olov Enquist is microanalyzed. In doing so, the phonetical-phonological, morphological and syntactical dialectal features in the three source texts are treated methodically and are exemplarily and systematically presented together with their translation variants in the target language. The study focuses mainly on the translations of dialectal lexicology, which is investigated according to its contrastive function regarding the translations of standard language, thereby examining its adequacy. By including all the dialectal lexemes appearing in the works and their translations empirical dates have been compiled as a result of the translation methods. The study´s analyses demonstrate that dialectal elements are mainly translated into standard language, that a large part of dialectisms is paraphrased and that a small part is rendered by spoken language without regional limits. A tendency towards increasing use of dialectal elements through the times can be detected as well as a propensity to adapt the translation to the stylistical preferences in the receiving country. Thus, "cultural transfer" is not promoted.

Hanlon, Mary-Claire. "Detecting an intention to communicate: using ToMas to test Theory of Mind in people with schizophrenia and healthy controls." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/1037113.

Abstract:
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Introduction: Impairments in Theory of Mind (ToM), for example, in schizophrenia, are evidenced in studies which typically use variants of story comprehension tasks (e.g., Hinting, Corcoran et al, 1995). These tasks can be complex and may depend upon IQ and executive functioning (Ducato et al, 2008). So far, it is unknown what parts of the human brain are responsible for detecting an intention to communicate from sounds, and distinguishing these from those sounds produced without such intent. We developed a much simpler auditory ToM task to assess the specific ability to detect whether a sound conveyed an ‘intention to communicate’: Theory-of-Mind-auditory-stimuli (ToMas). Our aim was to identify brain regions associated with the detection of an intention to communicate in people with schizophrenia and healthy controls when they responded to ToMas. We hypothesised firstly, that mentally healthy people would perceive and rate auditory stimuli in similar ways and distinguish sounds with an intention to communicate (ITC) from those without. Secondly, we believed that there was insufficient evidence to assume there would be any differences on this task between mentally healthy controls and participants with schizophrenia who were matched on age, gender and IQ. Thirdly, we expected that mentally healthy controls would use language-specific brain regions for ITC stimuli which were not used for non-ITC stimuli, when recorded using functional brain imaging. Lastly, we expected the differential activation seen in the healthy controls would be markedly absent in the people with schizophrenia, even though they would be matched on similar variables and their behavioural responses would be the same. Method: Participants: The behavioural study involved testing 50 mentally healthy participants (18 male) from Research Registers and the community (mean age 38.5, SD=15.1); a subset was matched on age and gender to 14 people with schizophrenia (10 male; mean age 40.0, SD=11.6). Then nine participants (6 male) from each group, matched on age and gender, were scanned whilst performing ToMas (mean age 37, SD=9.9). Procedure: Initially, healthy adults and those with schizophrenia were asked to listen to sounds played and answer qualitative questions about them. Twenty fMRI-pilot participants of ToMas rated sounds on familiarity, source, emotional salience, meaningfulness, and intention to communicate (ITC), leading to a subset of 30 stimuli, where the ITC was either clearly evident, clearly absent, or ambiguous. The aim of ToMas was to distinguish sounds with an ITC from those without. In the neuroimaging paradigm, participants were presented with a sound, then asked “Message?”, to which they responded yes/no via button-press. Apparata and stimuli: Haemodynamic responses to stimuli were collected using a Siemens Avanto 1.5Tesla MR scanner in an event-related paradigm. Group-level random effect analyses were performed separately on each contrast after each individual’s data were analysed (GLM, regressors=stimulus categories, covariates=motion parameters). Data were analysed using SPM8 and Matlab 7.1. Results: Healthy adults aged 18-65 years (N=50) showed qualitative elements such as familiarity, source, emotion, and meaning were used when deciding if a stimulus had an ITC. Our schizophrenia group (N=14) showed no behavioural difference in ToMas from the 14 healthy controls matched on age, gender and IQ: no group differences suggested that our schizophrenia participants were not hampered in identifying stimuli with an ITC from those without. Using a shorter version of ToMas (30 auditory stimuli), in functional neuroimaging (fMRI), we ascertained which parts of the brain were responsible for both perceiving the stimuli, and subtracting out the known brain regions to reveal those which managed the discernment of ITC. Data from mentally healthy participants (N=14) highlighted the impact of the superior temporal and middle temporal gyri (especially right STG and left MTG) in how mentally healthy adults chose between ITC-absent and ITC-present stimuli, and as predicted, the differential activation seen in the healthy group (of right STG & left MTG at p<.001) was remarkably absent in the schizophrenia group (comparison N=9:9). Discussion: Results from ToMas could account for a person’s ability to attribute an incidental sound as being distinct from one with ITC and finds support in studies of prosody and language. It could also be used to evaluate social skills training programs and in longitudinal studies of social cognition. ToMas could also prove beneficial in the translational implications of research. That is, both versions could prove useful, in that the behavioural version could be used in social insight training, and the imaging version could be used in imaging and in evaluation of therapies.

The download rate of smart phones and mobile communication apps has become a common trend. Among them, the popularity of LINE is leading in the social mobile communication app, and the development of mobile instant messaging makes the communication between people easier. And quickly, it eliminates space and time constraints, allowing people to send messages to connect with others anywhere with a mobile vehicle. The purpose of this study is to explore the willingness of small and medium-sized tutors to use the instant messaging software LINE to communicate with their teachers. The integrated technology connection model and the information system success model are the research framework. The research method uses convenient sampling and questionnaire survey to Chiayi County. The national primary tutor is the research object. The research results show that performance expectation, hard work expectation, social impact and system quality have a significant impact on the behavioral intention of the national small tutor using the instant messaging software LINE to communicate with the teacher. Based on the above research results, it can be used as a reference for educational administrations and teachers, which can help improve the work efficiency and professional development of teachers.

The purpose of this study is to find out what is the most promoting way to communicate with the customer about eco-friendly product. We use product color and product form to evoke individual’s regulatory foci (promotion focus or prevention focus). Then, we use the company’s environmental behaviors to design the behaviors’ pure description and two types of mental simulations (outcome simulation and process simulation). Afterwards, we analyze the effects on regulatory focus in these different conditions. The qualitative analysis results suggest that: In pure description condition, people suspect the description and feel salience manipulative intention, so the purchase intention becomes lower. However, in outcome simulation condition, evoked promotion-focused people will high their purchase intention; in process simulation condition, evoked prevention-focused people will high their purchase intention. Finally, through our study, we find that if product design can evoke promotion focus, we should use outcome simulation to increase purchase intention; if product design can evoke prevention focus, we should use process simulation to increase purchase intention. We hope this study could help unknown or small eco-friendly company to promote their products. By appropriately using their environmental- protecting behaviors, these companies could make their customers’ purchase intention increased.

Abstract:
Effective communication with the parents of pediatric clients is considered an essential skill and encompasses the verbal exchanging of ideas, listening, and non-verbal communication (Taylor, 2020). Similarly, the therapeutic use of self is integral to the practice of occupational therapy and consists of the conscious enhancement of communication through the use of planned strategies for intentional client-therapist interactions (Taylor, 2020). However, many occupational therapy practitioners report communication challenges, such as parent emotional expressions (Andrews et al., 2013) and discussing parent roles and expectations (Kruijsen-Terpstra et al., 2016 ), and implementing the therapeutic use of self in practice (Bonsaksen et al., 2013). Furthermore, factors such as the limited availability of communication skills training, a limited understanding of how to practice reflection to enhance communication self-awareness (King et al., 2017), and decreased self-efficacy (Coad et al., 2018) hinder the opportunity for practitioners to enhance their communication competencies. The following chapters discuss the evidence base and guiding theories informing the development of the proposed program, Communicate to Collaborate. Communicate to Collaborate is a communication skills training that aims to strengthen pediatric therapy practitioners’ interpersonal communication skills so that how they communicate with families becomes an active, mediating ingredient in their therapy interventions. Through program participation, it is anticipated practitioners will gain greater awareness of both their personal communication approaches and parent’s communication preferences and increased self-efficacy in how to communicate intentionally with parents, thus enhancing their therapeutic use of self in practice and improving the quality of family-centered pediatric therapy services.

This study centered on the aggregated information and explored elements of aggregated information for persuasive design, with the purpose of understanding in-depth persuasion, based on Fogg's behavior model. At First, expert assessment was applied to filter out three communicative styles of the aggregated information, as three different contexts for online experimental conditions. Secondly, the online experiment was adopted to investigate the relationships among user’s motivations of information-seeking, communicative styles of aggregated information and persuasive effects on users' behavior intention. The result showed that persuasion effects differed in communicative styles of Aggregated Information. The attractive style had a higher predictive validity in user’s behavior-intention of information sharing than informational styles. Furthermore, inasmuch as user’s perception of design elements in storytelling style was low, storytelling style didn't moderate the relationship between information-seeking motivations and behavior-intention of information sharing.

This is a three-year longitudinal study exploring the predication of communicative intention development of 12-24 months typically developing children. As the research began, the researcher needed to collect data of communicative intention behaviors of 12-24 months typically developing children by their 150 CSBS-DP and 113 Toy-set videos, which both have good inter-rater reliability, and analyzed the differences among the four groups of subjects by one-way ANOVA, dependent sample ANOVA, and LSD Post Hoc comparisons. Three years after the assessments, the researcher followed up the language development of those children who are already 4-5 years old, using Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Test (REVT) to assess their language abilities, and then discussed CSBS-DP and Toy-set with REVT for Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analysis. The major findings of this study were summarized as following : 1.The correlation between semi-structured and freedom situation of intentional abilities is low. 2.The communicative intentions development in 12-24 months children: In the CSBS-DP scale, emotion and eye gaze, gaze following, rate of communication, and behavior regulation development are significant differences. There are no significant differences on Toy-set scale. 3.Predictive data analysis in 12-24 months of intentions and language: In CSBS-DP, gaze shift and receptive scale show negative correlation; social interaction and full scale show positive correlation. In Toy-set, behavior regulation , receptive scale and full scale; joint attention and full scale show negative correlation.

Abstract:
The thesis presents a pragmatic analysis focused on the repertoire of communicative intents in the speech of a child from the 23rd to the 29th month of its life. The work is based on a case study of one child. The theoretical part of the work in chapters 1-3 is based on the study of literature, especially the literature of communication intentions, pragmatic functions and their expression and relevant literature of language and communication of 2 years old children. Before the start of recording we have obtained informed consent from the parents of a child whose communication were analysed. Basic material for the analysis are the video recordings of family communication of the child in various situations, the material was supplemented by observations and interviews with parents. Video recordings are transcribed according to the principles of CHAT (corpus CHILDES) and then (in chapters 4 and 5) is analysed in terms of recorded communication situations and communicative intents expressed by a child. The results of our work we compare with the results in existing literature.

Accompanied with German Industry upgrade to 4.0, the technology advancement is an unchangeable fact. Cloud technology and communication applications increasingly upgrading are creating the platforms of e-commerce companies to provide customer-to-customer, business-to-customer, business-to-business sales services as well as the development of Big Data that deals with the challenge of the traditional data processing limitations in data capture, data storage, analysis, sharing and transfer. The companies use various instant / mobile message applications such as QQ, the dominating instant message application in China, managing their customer profiles, transmitting their data, incorporating their media advertisements and communicating with their customers in a real-time. They are up to speed to holistically digitalize the entire companies to save their costs on energy consumptions, time, raw materials, sampling before the mass productions, and labor. QQ overtime collects the great amount of customer profiles and preferences that become an important player of Big Data cycle. This thesis is focusing on Technology Acceptance Model as a skeleton, factoring in external variables taken perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use as two independent variables and deriving the attitude toward using, behavioral intention to use, and actual system use of the customers’ satisfactory. Taken a company employees based both in China and Taiwan as population and web-based survey questionnaire to obtain its samples. 420 sets of the sample survey questionnaire were distributed, 408 considered effective, and none was ineffective; the effectiveness rate is 97.14%. Descriptive statistics, t-test, regression analysis, was used to collect the data, further analyze, finalize its result, and infer from the existing analyzed data. As the result, mobile message application is positively correlated to the attitude toward using and behavioral intention to use. The study strongly indicates that the stability and high quality of instant or mobile message is the key to capture the user’s loyalty for the long run. It can be inferred that companies operating their business between China and Taiwan require to be aware the strengths, weaknesses, and limitations of using mobile message applications in order to close communicative gaps between the companies to their own employees and their employees with their customers. According to the observations and quotative statistics, the big data collection and the technology advancement will increase the behavioral intention to use. Experiences of how to affectively apply this effectively will drive behavioral intention to use upward.

Abstract:
Following society’s trend of a more sustainable lifestyle, companies today urge to improve the live cycle of their products. As consumers often perceive this to happen mainly for the companies’ own benefit, their trust in green products is put to the test. The innovation strategy consumer co-creation should build and strengthen the trust through greater transparency and a focus on customer interests. In three experimental studies of 194, 139 and 227 participants, this thesis investigated the role of co-creation in a sustainable setting and further how the right communicator influences the effect of co-creation. Using the product category skin-cream direct as well as indirect mediation or moderation effects between the sustainability claim, the innovation method, trust and purchase intention were analyzed. The findings indicate that trust is important when buying a sustainable product. Secondly, results show that co-created products have an effect on trust and purchase intention, especially if consumers feel that the co-creators have a sufficiently high level of expertise. Finally, evidence was found that expertise can also be transmitted through the communicator, who is responsible to disseminate information about the co-created product. These findings provide a valuable contribution to current literature by combining the research topics of sustainability and co-creation and further expand the research on the external factors that can enhance the co-creation effect. In addition, the thesis suggests substantial managerial implications for companies practicing sustainable production and long for a customer-focused innovation strategy.

EN : The work is presented on 65 pages of printed text, contains 2 applications. The list of references includes 66 sources. The presented paper is dedicated to the analysis of such a topical problem as the linguo-pragmatic and socio-lingual aspects of an individual language personality. The object of the work can be defined as Boris Johnson’s language personality. The main aim of the paper consists in analyzing the linguo-pragmatic and socio-lingual characteristics of Boris Johnson’s speech as well as the linguistic means of their realization. It determined the accomplishment of such objectives as: - defining the terms language personality, linguo-pragmatics, communicative intention, communicative strategy, communicative tactics, sociolinguistics; - describe a language personality structure; - analyzing of the verbal-semantic level of Boris Johnson’s language personality; - analyzing of the politician’s communicative intentions, strategies and tactics; - analyzing the socio-lingual aspects of Boris Johnson’s language personality; - generalizing the results of the analysis. The definition of a “language personality” is offered in the work. Three levels of the structure of a language personality are distinguished: verbal-semantic, thesaurus and pragmatic. The author proves that such a multifacet linguistic phenomenon as a langage personality should be studied from the points of view of different aspects. The scientific novelty of the presented research lies in the investigation of the linguo-pragmatic and socio-lingual aspects of Boris Johnson’s language personality.

Vu, Thao Thi. "English Language Curriculum Reform at the National Level: a Case of Intentions and Realities in Viet Nam." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/129584.

Abstract:
Globalisation and the global economy have become bywords in the new millennium. English has become the lingua franca for increasing international trade and commerce, and the spread, the reach, the creep of English has been an undeniable aspect of the phenomenon. As a result, developing countries are under pressure to increase their numbers of competent English users so as to improve national competitiveness and become participating members in this commercial world. In response, significant efforts in numerous countries have been dedicated to large-scale, heavily-invested reform projects aiming to bring about radical change in English language curricula, materials, and pedagogies. Common to such reform efforts has been a move towards Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), which has generally been promoted as the approach to teaching and learning most likely to produce the communicative English users require for commercial exchange. Vietnam has recently taken the path of English language reform at the school level with the Government allocating $US425 million to the initiative. Project 2020 was announced in 2008 with specific English language achievement targets to be met by 2020. As part of the reform, the curriculum content was provided within a new textbook series and CLT was prescribed as the pedagogy to deliver the curriculum. Project 2020 has provided the context and data for this study. The study focused on the reform at the lower-secondary level (Years 6 – 9) and used a mixed methods research design to facilitate both quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The data set comprise an online teacher survey (n=112), the official curriculum mandates and textbooks, semi-structured interviews with teachers (n=11) and school principals (n=4), as well as 28 recorded classroom observations in urban and rural schools. The findings reveal that the intentions of the reform as expressed by MOET and the realities of classroom implementation are currently at a distance from each other, evident in the negative attitude of the teachers towards the feasibility of the curriculum goals and their fragmented understanding of CLT principles and premises. The analysis of classroom discourse provided evidence that classrooms were largely teacher-dominated, textbook-based and had minimal student-to-student interactions, all of which were at odds with CLT. To bridge the gap and deliver the communicative requirements of the nation, the study argues for an approach to teaching and learning in sympathy with the socio-political and cultural context in Vietnam, driven by a major focus on teacher professional development.

Abstract:
The relevance of the research is based on the need to study the factors affecting the professional self-determination of adolescents and young men, including their communicative skills and the characteristics of peer groups, to which young people belong and are affected by. The aim of the research was to study the interrelationship between the indicators of professional self-determination and the communication skill levels in adolescents and young men. Hypothesis of the research: 1. In adolescent boys, unlike teenage girls, the choice of profession is more uncertain. 2. Schoolchildren and students have significant links between the indicators of professional self-determination and their communication skill levels. 3. There is a link between the indicators of professional self-determination and belonging to the group. In the empirical study, the following methods were used: "The Personal Professional Path" questionnaire edited by N. Pryazhnikov, the "Differential-diagnostic Questionnaire" by E. Klimova, the method "Communication and Organizational Propensity" (COS-2) by V. Sinyavsky and B. Fedorishin, the "Sociometry" Method by J. Moreno. The sample of 159 people consisted of students of the 7th and 10th grades, students of the Ural Federal University. The external and internal motives of choosing a profession by adolescents and young men were examined and empirically studied, secondly, the relationship between the choice of profession and professional inclinations, and thirdly, the interrelation of communicative and professional inclinations. The first hypothesis was confirmed by the positive correlation between communicative inclinations and professional intentions in the category "man-man" in respondents. The second hypothesis was partially confirmed: in two classes and in one student group, the differences between the mini-groups were determined by the criterion of professional inclinations, i.e. professional inclinations can be a factor uniting the students in mini-groups, but the final professional choice within the groups is different, therefore, determined by other factors.

Abstract:
This study intends to describe a spirituality that can function as intention and motivation for communicative faith acts. The operational scientific approach to Practical Theology is discussed briefly. It is shown that acts are not only existential behaviour but has an underlying spirituality as intention and motivation. Different perspectives on spirituality are explored and the term praxis pietatis is chosen describe spirituality. The creation-recreation theme is used to define a theological basis for praxis pietatis. The praxis is intentional communicative acts that stem from the imperative. It is made possible by the indicative of the self-revelation of God to mankind. The redemption of God as existential knowledge is made possible by the exercising of faith by the new man. Through the pietatis this knowledge is integrated into the daily life - with the eye upon the resurrection.

Creighton, Graham Robert. "An assessment of student's English vocabulary levels and an exploration of the vocabulary profile of teacher's spoken discourse in an international high school." Diss., 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/22590.

Full text
Abstract:
In many international schools where English is the language of learning and teaching there are large percentages of students whose first language is not English. Many of these students may have low vocabulary levels which inhibits their chances of taking full advantage of their education. Low vocabulary levels can be a particular problem for students in mainstream classes where fluent English speaking teachers are using English to teach content areas of Mathematics, Science and History. Not only do students have to comprehend the low-frequency, academic and technical vocabulary pertaining to the subject, but they also need to know the higher frequency vocabulary that makes up general English usage. If students’ vocabulary levels fall too far below the vocabulary levels with which their teachers are speaking, then their chance of comprehending the topic is small, as is their chance of succeeding in their subjects. This study has two broad aims. Firstly, I have set out to assess the English vocabulary levels of students at an international school where English is the language of learning and teaching. The majority of students at this school do not have English as their first language. The second aim of this study is to explore the vocabulary profile of the teachers’ spoken discourse at the research school. By gaining a better understanding of the nature of teacher discourse – specifically the percentage of high, mid and low-frequency vocabulary, as well as academic vocabulary that they use – English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers will be in a stronger position to identify what the vocabulary learning task is and be able to assist students in reaching the vocabulary levels necessary to make sense of their lessons. This study revealed a large gap between the generally low vocabulary levels of ESL students and the vocabulary levels spoken by their teachers. As a result the need for explicit vocabulary instruction and learning is shown to be very important in English medium (international) schools, where there are large numbers of students whose first language is not English.
