Johnson, Ryan J. On the Surface: The Deleuze-Stoicism Encounter. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474412094.003.0015.

Full text
Abstract:
Ryan J. Johnson’s “On the Surface: The Deleuze-Stoicism Encounter” investigates Deleuze’s reworking of Stoic ontology and the theory of incorporeals. Contrary to the traditional interpretation, Johnson argues that there are three, not four, primary incorporeals: space, λεκτόν‎, and time. Deploying Deleuze’s thinking of the intensive-extensive ontological distinction, Johnson shows that each of the three incorporeals are paradoxically structured by the slight Stoic surface-without-thickness separating and connecting their respective extensive and intensive dimensions (place/void, verb/noun, Aion/Chronos). It is through this strange ontology of the incorporeals that the Stoics become the initiators of a new image of philosophy that generates a lineage of thought leading, eventually, to Deleuze himself.

Abstract:
Migrant integration and addressing the challenges of cultural and religious diversity in liberal democratic societies is arguably one of the pressing challenges of the twenty-first century. During the last twenty-five years there have been intensive political and academic debates on the appropriate normative and policy framework for addressing cultural diversity in Europe and North America. In terms of discourse, many politicians (including David Cameron, Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy) and intellectuals have argued that the philosophy of multiculturalism has failed. In terms of policies, integration priorities have increasingly taken a civic assimilationist turn, emphasising a set of common civic and political values to which all migrants and ethnic minorities must adhere....

Haig, Brian D. Exploratory Data Analysis. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190222055.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 2 is concerned with modern data analysis. It focuses primarily on the nature, role, and importance of exploratory data analysis, although it gives some attention to computer-intensive resampling methods. Exploratory data analysis is a process in which data are examined to reveal potential patterns of interest. However, the use of traditional confirmatory methods in data analysis remains the dominant practice. Different perspectives on data analysis, as they are shaped by four different accounts of scientific method, are provided. A brief discussion of John Tukey’s philosophy of teaching data analysis is presented. The chapter does not consider the more recent exploratory data analytic developments, such as the practice of statistical modeling, the employment of data-mining techniques, and more flexible resampling methods.

Eldridge, Hannah Vandegrift, and Luke Fischer, eds. Rilke's Sonnets to Orpheus. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190685416.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Rilke’s “Sonnets to Orpheus”: Philosophical and Critical Perspectives sheds new light on the philosophical significance of Rilke’s late masterpiece The Sonnets to Orpheus (1923), which Rilke wrote during an intensive period of inspiration in the winter of 1922. While the Duino Elegies (completed during the same period) have historically received more critical and philosophical attention than the Sonnets, this volume serves to remedy the relative neglect and illustrates the unique character and importance of the Sonnets as well as their significant connections to the Elegies. The volume features eight essays by philosophers, literary critics, and Rilke scholars, which explore a number of the central themes and motifs of the Sonnets as well as the significance of their formal qualities. An introductory essay (coauthored by the editors) situates the book in the context of philosophical poetics, the reception of Rilke as a philosophical poet, and the place of the Sonnets in Rilke’s oeuvre. The book’s premise is that an interdisciplinary approach to poetry, and more specifically to Rilke’s Sonnets, can facilitate crucial insights with the potential to expand the horizons of philosophy and criticism. The wide-ranging essays elucidate the relevance of the Sonnets to phenomenology and existentialism, hermeneutics and philosophy of language, philosophical poetics, philosophy of mythology, metaphysics, modernist aesthetics, feminism, ecocriticism, animal ethics, and philosophy of technology.

Abstract:

Booth, Jenifer. Pre-Modern Ethics, Authoritative Narratives, and the Tribunal. Edited by John Z. Sadler, K. W. M. Fulford, and Cornelius Werendly van Staden. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198732365.013.39.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter applies the modified philosophy of Alasdair MacIntyre to mental health law, and in particular to the mental health tribunal. The natural law approach of Thomas Aquinas is used to assist in this. It is argued that, for law to be just in pre-modern terms, it requires that it be assessed as rational together with the care it supports as a single entity. As such, according to a modified version of the Thomistic Aristotelian ethics of MacIntyre, justice would require reconciliation of both doctor and patient narratives regarding care, possibly at the tribunal. It is suggested that psychiatric intensive care, in particular, could benefit from this approach. The approach might be seen as an additional protection to human rights-based considerations. It is also argued that the tribunal can be seen differently, according to the tradition of enquiry.

Abstract:

Meis, Morgan, and J. M. Tyree. Wonder, Horror, Mystery: Letters on Cinema and Religion in Malick, Von Trier, and Kieślowski. punctum books, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.53288/0359.1.00.

Full text
Abstract:
Wonder, Horror, Mystery is a dialogue between two friends, both notable arts critics, that takes the form of a series of letters about movies and religion. One of the friends, J.M. Tyree, is a film critic, creative writer, and agnostic, while the other, Morgan Meis, is a philosophy PhD, art critic, and practicing Catholic. The question of cinema is raised here in a spirit of friendly friction that binds the personal with the critical and the spiritual. What is film? What’s it for? What does it do? Why do we so intensely love or hate films that dare to broach the subjects of the divine and the diabolical? These questions stimulate further thoughts about life, meaning, philosophy, absurdity, friendship, tragedy, humor, death, and God. The letters focus on three filmmakers who challenged secular assumptions in the late 20th century and early 21st century through various modes of cinematic re-enchantment: Terrence Malick, Lars von Trier, and Krzysztof Kieślowski. The book works backwards in time, giving intensive analysis to Malick’s To The Wonder (2012), Von Trier’s Antichrist (2009), and Kieślowski’s Dekalog (1988), respectively, in each of the book’s three sections. Meis and Tyree discuss the filmmakers and films as well as related ideas about philosophy, theology, and film theory in an accessible but illuminating way. The discussion ranges from the shamelessly intellectual to the embarrassingly personal. Spoiler alert: No conclusions are reached either about God or the movies. Nonetheless, it is a fun ride.

Full text
Abstract:
Andy Clark is a leading philosopher and cognitive scientist. The fruits of his work have been diverse and lasting. They have had an extraordinary impact throughout philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and robotics. The extended mind hypothesis, the power of parallel distributed processing, the role of language in opening up novel paths for thinking, the flexible interface between biological minds and artificial technologies, the significance of representation in explanations of intelligent behaviour, the promise of the predictive processing framework to unify the cognitive sciences: these are just some of the ideas explored in Clark’s work that have been picked up by many researchers and that have been contributing to intense debate across the sciences of mind and brain. This volume provides the first interdisciplinary, critical engagement with Clark’s work; it includes contributions of authors from several disciplines, offering a fresh perspective on key questions in the sciences of mind and brain.

Ungler, Franz, Max Gottschlich, and Thomas Sören Hoffmann, eds. Individuelles und Individuationsprinzip in Hegels Wissenschaft der Logik. Verlag Karl Alber, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783495813454.

Full text
