Wang, Gang Alan. "Entity Matching for Intelligent Information Integration." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195089.

Abstract:
Due to the rapid development of information technologies, especially the network technologies, business activities have never been as integrated as they are now. Business decision making often requires gathering information from different sources. This dissertation focuses on the problem of entity matching, associating corresponding information elements within or across information systems. It is devoted to providing complete and accurate information for business decision making. Three challenges have been identified that may affect entity matching performance: feature selection for entity representative, matching techniques, and searching strategy. This dissertation first provides a theoretical foundation for entity matching by connecting entity matching to the similarity and categorization theories developed in the field of cognitive science. The theories provide guidance for tackling the three challenges identified. First, based on the feature contrast similarity model, we propose a case-study-based methodology that identifies key features that uniquely identify an entity. Second, we propose a record comparison technique and a multi-layer naïve Bayes model that correspond respectively to the deterministic and the probability response selection models defined in the categorization theory. Experiments show that both techniques are effective in linking deceptive criminal identities. However, the probabilistic matching technique is preferable because it uses a semi-supervised learning method, which requires less human intervention during training. Third, based on the prototype access assumption proposed in the categorization theory, we apply an adaptive detection algorithm to entity matching so that efficiency can be greatly improved by the reduced search space. Experiments show that this technique significantly improves matching efficiency without significant accuracy loss. Based on the above findings we developed the Arizona IDMatcher, an identity matching system based on the multi-layer naïve Bayes model and the adaptive detection method. We compare the proposed system against the IBM Identity Resolution tool, a leading commercial product developed using heuristic decision rules. Experiments do not suggest a clear winner, but provide the pros and cons of each system. The Arizona IDMatcher is able to capture more true matches than IBM Identity Resolution (i.e., high recall). On the other hand, the matches identified by IBM Identity Resolution are mostly true matches (i.e., high precision).

Abstract:
Development and research on Artificial Intelligence have increased during recent years, and the field of medicine is not excluded as a target audience for this top modern technology. Despite new research and tools in favor of medical care, the staff is still under heavy workloads. The goal of this thesis is to analyze and propose the possibility of a chatbot that aims to ease the pressure on the medical staff. To provide a guarantee that patients are being monitored. With Artificial Intelligence, VOIP, Natural Language Processing, and web development, this chatbot can communicate with a patient, which will act as an assistant tool that conducts preparatory work for the medical staff. The system of the chatbot is integrated through a web application where the administrator can initiate call and store clients onto the database. To ascertain that the system operates in real-time, several tests have been carried out to tests concerning the latency between subsystems and the quality of service.

Abstract:
Multimodality requires the integration of heterogeneous transportation data and services to construct a broad view of the transportation network. Many new transportation services (e.g. ridesharing, car-sharing, bike-sharing) are emerging and gaining a lot of popularity since in some cases they provide better trip solutions. However, these services are still isolated from the existing multimodal solutions and are proposed as alternative plans without being really integrated in the suggested plans. The concept of open data is raising and being adopted by many companies where they publish their data sources to the web in order to gain visibility. The goal of this thesis is to use these data to enable multimodality by constructing an extended transportation network that links these new services to existing ones. The challenges we face mainly arise from the integration problem in both transportation services and transportation data

Abstract:
Considering the redundancy and the irrelevancy of current search engines in the World Wide Web (WWW), this thesis explores an alternative web-based method of Internet search and retrieval of information via an Intelligent Agent. The Intelligent Agent retrieves the information back to users and it inserts this information automatically into the users' database. There are three components in this system: (1) Multiple User Dungeon (MUD) as a front end, (2) dynamic database management system, and (3) Intelligent Agent as a back end. The front end is a web site open to all the users of this system. It allows different users to access the system simultaneously from different PCs inside the same Intranet. The DBMS database system is designed using Microsoft Access. It is the reservoir of all the data. It provides information to the front end when the users query the database. Intelligent agent (back-end) is implemented using Visual C++ 6.0. It takes advantage of the technique of Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) to connect to the DBMS. The Intelligent Agent searches the Internet through the search engine of Google and then inserts the records into the database based on the user preference. The Intelligent Agent can also update the database by deleting the obsolete records automatically. In order to test and implement this application system, it is applied two business cases: (1) Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) and (2) Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) database system. DBMS and back-end are transparent to users. Users simply need to manipulate the front end interface that links the user to all database review and modification functions, as well as to the search and automatic retrieval options. Results of the implementation of the applications are presented and future research applications for Internet information search and retrieval processes are discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Smart adaptive systems provide advanced tools for monitoring, control, diagnostics and management of nonlinear multivariate processes. Data mining with a multitude of methodologies is a good basis for the integration of intelligent systems. Small, specialised systems have a large number of feasible solutions, but highly complex systems require domain expertise and more compact approaches at the basic level. Linguistic equation (LE) approach originating from fuzzy logic is an efficient technique for these problems. This research is focused on the smart adaptive applications, where different intelligent modules are used in a smart way. The nonlinear scaling methodology based on advanced statistical analysis is the corner stone in representing the variable meanings in a compact way to introduce intelligent indices for control and diagnostics. The new constraint handling together with generalised norms and moments facilitates recursive parameter estimation approaches for the adaptive scaling. Well-known linear methodologies are used for the steady state, dynamic and case-based modelling in connection with the cascade and interactive structures in building complex large scale applications. To achieve insight and robustness the parameters are defined separately for the scaling and the interactions. The LE based intelligent analysers are useful in the multilevel LE control and diagnostics: the LE control is enhanced with the intelligent analysers, adaptive and model-based modules and high level control. The operating area is extended with the predefined adaptation and specific events activate appropriate control actions. The condition, stress and trend indices are used for the detection of operating conditions. The same overall structure is extended to the scheduling and managerial decision support. The linguistic representation becomes increasingly important when the human interaction is essential. The new scaling approach is used in control and diagnostic applications and discussed in connection with previous multivariate modelling cases. The LE based intelligent analysers are the key modules of the system integration, which produces hybrid systems: fuzzy systems move gradually to higher levels, neural networks and evolutionary computing are used for tuning. The overall system is reinforced with advanced statistical analysis, signal processing, feature extraction, classification and mechanistic modelling
Tiivistelmä Viisaat mukautuvat järjestelmät sisältävät kehittyneitä työkaluja epälineaaristen monimuuttujaisten prosessien valvontaan, säätöön, diagnostiikkaan ja johtamiseen. Laajaan menetelmäpohjaan perustuva tiedonrikastus on pohjana älykkäiden järjestelmien yhdistämiselle. Pienille erikoistuneille järjestelmille on monia toteutettavissa olevia ratkaisuja, mutta erittäin monimutkaiset järjestelmät vaativat alan asiantuntemusta ja kompakteja lähestymistapoja perustasolla. Sumeaan logiikkaan pohjautuva lingvististen yhtälöiden (linguistic equation, LE) menetelmä on tehokas ratkaisu näissä ongelma-alueissa.

Abstract:
Autonomy of operations combined with decentralised management of data has given rise to a number of heterogeneous databases or information systems within an enterprise. These systems are often incompatible in structure as well as content and hence difficult to integrate. This thesis investigates the problem of heterogeneous database integration, in order to meet the increasing demand for obtaining meaningful information from multiple databases without disturbing local autonomy. In spite of heterogeneity, the unity of overall purpose within a common application domain, nevertheless, provides a degree of semantic similarity which manifests itself in the form of similar data structures and common usage patterns of existing information systems. This work introduces a conceptual integration approach that exploits the similarity in meta level information in existing systems and performs metadata mining on database objects to discover a set of concepts common to heterogeneous databases within the same application domain. The conceptual integration approach proposed here utilises the background knowledge available in database structures and usage patterns and generates a set of concepts that serve as a domain abstraction and provide a conceptual layer above existing legacy systems. This conceptual layer is further utilised by an information re-engineering framework that customises and packages information to reflect the unique needs of different user groups within the application domain. The architecture of the information re-engineering framework is based on an object-oriented model that represents the discovered concepts as customised application objects for each distinct user group.

Karunaratne, Maddumage Don Gamini. "An intelligent function level backward state justification search for ATPG." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184921.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation describes an innovative approach to the state justification portion of the sequential circuit automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) process. Given the absence of a stored fault an ATPG controller invokes some combinational circuit test generation procedure, such as the D-algorithm, to identify a circuit state (goal state) and input vectors that will sensitize a selected fault. The state justification phase then finds a transfer sequence to the goal from the present state. A forward fault propogation search can be successfully guided through state space from the present state but the forward justification search is less efficient and the failure rate is high. The backward function level search invokes inverse RTL level primitives and exploits easy movement of data vectors in structured VLSI circuits. Examples illustrated are in AHPL. This search is equally applicable to an RTL level subset of VHDL. Combinational logic units are treated as functions and the circuit states are partitioned into control states and data states. The search proceeds backwards over the control state space starting from the goal state node and data states are transformed according to the control flow. Vectorized data paths in VLSI circuits and search guiding heuristics which favor convenient inverse functions keep the number of search nodes low. Partial covers, conceptually similar to singular covers in D-algorithm, model the inverse functions of combinational logic units. The search successfully terminates when a child state node logically matches the present state and the present state values can satisfy all the constraints encountered along the search path.

Abstract:
Software development has gotten more complex and certain parts being more and more automated. Continuous integration practices with automated build and testing greatly benefit the development process. Combined with continuous deployment, the software can go directly from commit to deployment within hours or days which means that every commit is a possible deployment. The ability to trace links between artifacts is known as software traceability which has become a necessity and requirement in the industry. Following these traces and the ability to answer questions and base decisions on them is a complex problem. Tools already used in the industry are hard to adapt since every stakeholder requires different needs. Eiffel protocol aims to be as flexible and scalable as possible to fit as many needs as necessary for the stakeholder. This thesis provides an extension to Eiffel-store, an already existing open-source application that can visualize events in the Eiffel protocol that will be extended with functionality so that it can filter events and answer some questions stakeholders might have.

Abstract:
Product visual inspection is still performed manually or semi automatically in most industries from simple ceramic tile grading to complicated automotive body panel paint defect and surface quality inspection. Moreover, specular surfaces present additional challenges to conventional vision systems due to specular reflections, which may mask the true location of objects and lead to incorrect measurements. Some sophisticated optical inspection methods have already been developed for high precision surface defect inspection in recent years. Unfortunately, most of them are highly computational. Systems built on those methods are either inapplicable or costly to achieve real-time inspection. This thesis describes an integrated low-cost intelligent system developed to automatically capture and extract regular defects of the ceramic tiles with uniformly colored specular coatings. The proposed system is implemented on a group of smart cameras using its on-board processing ability to achieve real-time inspection. The results of this study will be used to facilitate the design of a robust, low-cost, closed-loop inspection system for a class of products with smooth specular coatings. The experimental results on real test panels demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of proposed system.

Räsänen, T. (Teemu). "Intelligent information services in environmental applications." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2011. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789514296574.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The amount of information available has increased due to the development of our modern digital society. This has caused an information overflow, meaning that there is lot of data available but the meaningful information or knowledge is hidden inside the overwhelming data smog. Nevertheless, the large amount of data together with the increased capabilities of computers provides a great opportunity to learn the behaviour of different kinds of phenomena at a more detailed level. The quality of life, well-being and a healthy living environment, for example, are fields where new information services can assist the creation of proactive decisions to avoid environmental problems caused by industrial activity, traffic, or extraordinary weather conditions. The combination of data coming from different sources such as public registers, companies’ operational information systems, online sensors and process monitoring systems provides a fruitful basis for creating new valuable information for citizens, decision makers or other end users. The aim of this thesis is to present the concept of intelligent information services and a methodological background in order to add intelligence using computational methods for the enrichment of multidimensional data. Moreover, novel examples are presented where new significant information is created and then provided for end users. The data refining process used is called data mining and contains methods for data collection, pre-processing, modelling, visualizing and interpreting the results and sharing the new information thus created. Information systems are a base for the creation of information services, meaning that stakeholder groups have access only to information but they do not own the whole information system that contains measurement systems, data collecting, and a technological platform. Intelligence in information services comes from the use of computational intelligent methods in data processing, modelling and visualization. In this thesis the general concept of such services is presented and concretized using five cases that focus on environmental and industrial examples. The results of these case studies show that the combination of different data sources provides fertile ground for developing new information services. The data mining methods used such as clustering and predictive modelling together with effective pre-processing methods have great potential to handle the large amount of multivariate data in this environmental context also. A self-organizing map combined with k-means clustering is useful for creating more detailed information about personal energy use. Predictive modelling using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) is well suited for estimating the number of tourists visiting a leisure centre and to find the correspondence between pulp process characteristics and the chemicals used. These results have many indirect effects on reducing negative concerns regarding our surroundings and maintaining a healthy living environment. The innovative use of stored data is one of the main elements in the creation of future information services. Thus, more emphasis should be placed on the development of data integration and effective data processing methods. Furthermore, it is noted that final end users, such as citizens or decision makers, should be involved in the data refining process at the very first stage. In this way, the approach is truly customer-oriented and the results fulfil the concrete need of specific end users
Tiivistelmä Informaation määrä on kasvanut merkittävästi tietoyhteiskunnan kehittymisen myötä. Käytössämme onkin huomattava määrä erimuotoista tietoa, josta voimme hyödyntää kuitenkin vain osan. Jatkuvasti mitattavan datan suuri määrä ja sijoittuminen hajalleen asettavat osaltaan haasteita tiedon hyödyntämiselle. Tietoyhteiskunnassa hyvinvointi ja terveellisen elinympäristön säilyminen koetaan aiempaa tärkeämmäksi. Toisaalta yritysten toiminnan tehostaminen ja kestävän kehityksen edistäminen vaativat jatkuvaa parantamista. Informaatioteknologian avulla moniulotteista mittaus- ja rekisteritietoa voidaan hyödyntää esimerkiksi ennakoivaan päätöksentekoon jolla voidaan edistää edellä mainittuja tavoitteita. Tässä työssä on esitetty ympäristöalan älykkäiden informaatiopalveluiden konsepti, jossa oleellista on loppukäyttäjien tarpeiden tunnistaminen ja ongelmien ratkaiseminen jalostetun informaation avulla. Älykkäiden informaatiopalvelujen taustalla on yhtenäinen tiedonlouhintaan perustuva tiedonjalostusprosessi, jossa raakatieto jalostetaan loppukäyttäjille soveltuvaan muotoon. Tiedonjalostusprosessi koostuu datan keräämisestä ja esikäsittelystä, mallintamisesta, tiedon visualisoinnista, tulosten tulkitsemisesta sekä oleellisen tiedon jakamisesta loppukäyttäjäryhmille. Datan käsittelyyn ja analysointiin on käytetty laskennallisesti älykkäitä menetelmiä, josta juontuu työn otsikko; älykkäät informaatiopalvelut. Väitöskirja pohjautuu viiteen artikkeliin, joissa osoitetaan tiedonjalostusprosessin toimivuus erilaisissa tapauksissa ja esitetään esimerkkejä kuhunkin prosessin vaiheeseen soveltuvista laskennallisista menetelmistä. Artikkeleissa on kuvattu matkailualueen kävijämäärien ennakointiin ja kotitalouksien sähköenergian kulutuksen pienentämiseen liittyvät informaatiopalvelut sekä analyysi selluprosessissa käytettävien kemikaalien määrän pienentämiseksi. Näistä saadut kokemukset ja tulokset on yleistetty älykkään informaatiopalvelun konseptiksi. Väitöskirjan toisena tavoitteena on rohkaista organisaatioita hyödyntämään tietovarantoja aiempaa tehokkaammin ja monipuolisemmin sekä rohkaista tarkastelemaan myös oman organisaation ulkopuolelta saatavien tietolähteiden käyttämistä. Toisaalta, uudenlaisten informaatiopalvelujen ja liiketoimintojen kehittämistä tukisi julkisilla varoilla kerättyjen, ja osin yritysten hallussa olevien, tietovarantojen julkaiseminen avoimiksi

Abstract:
Personalized and pervasive healthcare help seamlessly integrate healthcare and wellness into people’s daily life, independent of time and space. With the developments in biomedical sensing technologies nowadays, silicon based integrated circuits have shown great advantages in terms of tiny physical size, and low power consumption. As a result, they have been found in many advanced medical applications. In the meanwhile, printed electronics is considered as a promising approach enabling cost-effective manufacturing of thin, flexible, and light-weight devices. A hybrid integration of integrated circuits and printed electronics provides a promising solution for the future wearable healthcare devices. This thesis first reviews the current approaches for bio-electric signal sensing and the state-of-the-art designs for biomedical circuit and systems. In the second part, the idea of Intelligent Electrode and Active Cable for wearable ECG monitoring systems is proposed. Based on this concept, we design and fabricate two customized IC chips to provide a single cable solution for long-term healthcare monitoring. The first chip is a digital ASIC with a serial communication protocol implemented on chip to support data and command packets transmission between different ASIC chips. Also, it has on-chip memory to buffer the digital bio-signal. An Intelligent Electrode is formed by embedding the ASIC chip into the conductive electrode. With the on-chip integrated communication protocol, a wired sensor network can be established enabling the single cable solution. The ASIC’s controlling logic is capable of making dynamic network management, thus endows the electrode with local intelligence. The second chip is a fully integrated mixed-signal SoC. In addition to the digital controller implemented and verified in the first chip, another 2 key modules are integrated: a tunable analog front end circuits, and a 6-input SAR ADC. The second chip works as a networked SoC sensor. The command-based network management is verified through functional tests using the fabricated SoCs. With the programmable analog front end circuits, the SoC sensor can be configured to detect a variety of bio-electric signals. EOG, EMG, ECG, and EEG signals are successfully recorded through in-vivo tests. This research also explores the potential of using high accurate inkjet printing technology as an inexpensive integration method and enabling technology to design and fabricate bio-sensing devices. Performance evaluation of printed electrodes and interconnections on flexible substrates is made to examine the feasibility of applying them in the fabrication of Bio-Patch. The reliability of the inkjet printed sliver traces is evaluated via static bending tests. The measurement results prove that the printed silver lines can offer a reliable interconnection. In-vivo test results show that the quality of ECG signal sensed by the printed electrodes is comparable with the one gained by commercial electrodes. Finally, two Bio-Patch prototypes are presented: one is based on photo paper substrate, the other on polyimide substrate. These two prototypes are implemented by heterogeneous integration of the silicon based SoC sensor with cost-effective printed electronics onto the flexible substrates. The measurement results indicate the SoC operates smoothly with the printed electronics. Clean ECG signal is successfully recorded from both of the implemented Bio-Patch prototypes. This versatile SoC sensor can be used in various applications according to specific requirements. And this heterogeneous system combining high-level integrated SoC technology and inkjet printing technique provides a promising solution for future personalized and pervasive healthcare applications.

Abstract : Spare parts supply chains are particularly challenged by the low predictability of the demand, the need for high service levels and the cost of inventory. To address these challenges through a strategy of synchronizing supply chain participants, collaborative planning can be combined with intelligent maintenance systems that help predict failures. However, hierarchical models of integration have little acceptance from actors in the chain, who do not wish to share strategic data. Decentralized models promote the feasibility of collaborative planning but have not yet been applied in spare parts supply chains. In this context, in the present work, a bibliometric analysis with a bibliographic review on collaboration and supply chain planning is applied in order to verify the main concepts, directions and research opportunities. Research opportunities were identified in the application of decentralized models in real cases, and there was a general lack of information to support the choice of a solving method. Thus, the objective of this work is to propose a structured procedure to support the application of decentralized collaborative planning in supply chains of spare parts. For this, a table of characteristics is constructed to support the choice of the method for solving linear problems. A structured procedure is then developed and tested to tailor a decentralized collaborative planning concept to a spare parts supply chain integrated with intelligent maintenance systems. This developed structured procedure is applied in a test case and, as a result, an adequate model of collaborative operational planning is proposed for the improvement of this supply chain. Decentralized planning was identified as having achieved better results than a classical management approach even in scenarios of high demand variation, such as in spare parts supply chains.

Abstract:
A decision support system (DSS) is an information system that supports decisionmakers involved in complex decision-making processes. Modern DSSs needto exploit data that are not only numerical or symbolic, but also heterogeneouslystructured (e.g., text and multimedia data) and coming from various sources (e.g,the Web). We term such data complex data. Data warehouses are casually usedas the basis of such DSSs. They help integrate data from a variety of sourcesto support decision-making. However, the advent of complex data imposes anothervision of data warehousing including data integration, data storage and dataanalysis. Moreover, today's requirements impose integrating complex data in nearreal-time rather than with traditional snapshot and batch ETL (Extraction, Transformationand Loading). Real-time and near real-time processing requires a moreactive ETL process. Data integration tasks must react in an intelligent, i.e., activeand autonomous way, to encountered changes in the data integration environment, especially data sources. In this dissertation, we propose novel solutions for complex data integration innear real-time, actively and autonomously. We indeed provide a generic metadatabased,service-oriented and event-driven approach for integrating complex data.To address data complexity issues, our approach stores heterogeneous data into aunied format using a metadata-based approach and XML. We also tackle datadistribution and interoperability using a service-oriented approach. Moreover, toaddress near real-time requirements, our approach stores not only integrated datainto a unied repository, but also functions to integrate data on-the-y. We also apply a service-oriented approach to track relevant data changes in near real-time.Furthermore, the idea of integrating complex data actively and autonomously revolvesaround mining logged events of data integration environment. For this sake,we propose an incremental XML-based algorithm for mining association rules fromlogged events. Then, we de ne active rules upon mined data to reactivate integrationtasks. To validate our approach for managing complex data integration, we develop ahigh-level software framework, namely AX-InCoDa (Active XML-based frameworkfor Integrating Complex Data). AX-InCoDa is implemented as Web application usingopen-source tools. It exploits Web standards (e.g., XML and Web services) andActive XML to handle complexity issues and near real-time requirements. Besidewarehousing logged events into an event repository to be mined for self-managingpurposes, AX-InCoDa is enriched with active rules. AX-InCoDa's feasibility is illustratedby a healthcare case study. Finally, the performance of our incremental eventmining algorithm is experimentally demonstrated

Abstract:
In the future, agriculture and environment will rely on more and more heterogeneous data collected by wireless sensor networks (WSN). These data are generally used in decision support systems (DSS). In this dissertation, we focus on adaptive context-aware systems based on WSN and DSS, dedicated to the monitoring of natural phenomena. Thus, a formalization for the design and the deployment of these kinds of systems is proposed. The considered context is established using the data from the studied phenomenon but also from the wireless sensors (e.g., their energy level). By the use of ontologies and reasoning techniques, we aim to maintain the required quality of service (QoS) level of the collected data (according to the studied phenomenon) while preserving the resources of the WSN. To illustrate our proposal, a complex use case, the study of floods in a watershed, is described. During this PhD thesis, a simulator for context-aware systems which integrates a multi-agent system (JADE) and a rule engine (Jess) has been developed. Keywords: ontologies, rule-based inferences, formalization, heterogeneous data, sensors data streams integration, WSN, limited resources, DSS, adaptive context-aware systems, QoS, agriculture, environment

Abstract:
Abstract A future vision of enabling technologies for the needs of energy conservation as well as energy efficiency based on the most important megatrends identified, namely climate change, urbanization, and digitalization. In the United States and in the European Union, about 40% of total energy consumption goes into energy use by buildings. Moreover, indoor climate quality is recognized as a distinct health hazard. On account of these two factors, energy efficiency and healthy housing are active topics in international research. The main aims of this thesis are to study which elements affect indoor climate quality, how energy consumption describes building energy efficiency and to analyse the measured data using intelligent computational methods. The data acquisition technology used in the studies relies heavily on smart metering technologies based on Building Automation Systems (BAS), big data and the Internet of Things (IoT). The data refining process presented and used is called Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD). It contains methods for data acquisition, pre-processing, data mining, visualisation and interpretation of results, and transformation into knowledge and new information for end users. In this thesis, four examples of data analysis and knowledge deployment concerning small houses and school buildings are presented. The results of the case studies show that the data mining methods used in building energy efficiency and indoor climate quality analysis have a great potential for processing a large amount of multivariate data effectively. An innovative use of computational methods provides a good basis for researching and developing new information services. In the KDD process, researchers should co-operate with end users, such as building management and maintenance personnel as well as residents, to achieve better analysis results, easier interpretation and correct conclusions for exploiting the knowledge

Abstract:
Abstract Global warming has set in motion a trend for cutting energy costs to reduce the carbon footprint. Reducing energy consumption, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and eliminating energy wastage are among the main goals of the European Union (EU). The buildings sector is the largest user of energy and CO2 emitter in the EU, estimated at approximately 40% of the total consumption. According to the International Panel on Climate Change, 30% of the energy used in buildings could be reduced with net economic benefits by 2030. At the same time, indoor air quality is recognized more and more as a distinct health hazard. Because of these two factors, energy efficiency and healthy housing have become active topics in international research. The main aims of this thesis were to study and develop a wireless building monitoring and control system that will produce valuable information and services for end-users using computational methods. In addition, the technology developed in this thesis relies heavily on building automation systems (BAS) and some parts of the concept termed the “Internet of Things” (IoT). The data refining process used is called knowledge discovery from data (KDD) and contains methods for data acquisition, pre-processing, modeling, visualization and interpreting the results and then sharing the new information with the end-users. In this thesis, four examples of data analysis and knowledge deployment are presented. The results of the case studies show that innovative use of computational methods provides a good basis for researching and developing new information services. In addition, the data mining methods used, such as regression and clustering completed with efficient data pre-processing methods, have a great potential to process a large amount of multivariate data effectively. The innovative and effective use of digital information is a key element in the creation of new information services. The service business in the building sector is significant, but plenty of new possibilities await capable and advanced companies or organizations. In addition, end-users, such as building maintenance personnel and residents, should be taken into account in the early stage of the data refining process. Furthermore, more advantages can be gained by courageous co-operation between companies and organizations, by utilizing computational methods for data processing to produce valuable information and by using the latest technologies in the research and development of new innovations
Tiivistelmä Rakennus- ja kiinteistösektori on suurin fossiilisilla polttoaineilla tuotetun energian käyttäjä. Noin 40 prosenttia kaikesta energiankulutuksesta liittyy rakennuksiin, rakentamiseen, rakennusmateriaaleihin ja rakennuksien ylläpitoon. Ilmastonmuutoksen ehkäisyssä rakennusten energiankäytön vähentämisellä on suuri merkitys ja rakennuksissa energiansäästöpotentiaali on suurin. Tämän seurauksena yhä tiiviimpi ja energiatehokkaampi rakentaminen asettaa haasteita hyvän sisäilman laadun turvaamiselle. Näistä seikoista johtuen sisäilman laadun tutkiminen ja jatkuvatoiminen mittaaminen on tärkeää. Väitöskirjan päätavoitteena on kuvata kehitetty energiankulutuksen ja sisäilman laadun monitorointijärjestelmä. Järjestelmän tuottamaa mittaustietoa on jalostettu eri loppukäyttäjiä palvelevaan muotoon. Innovatiivinen digitaalisen tiedon hyödyntäminen on avainasemassa kehitettäessä uusia informaatiopalveluita. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The ever-increasing existence of electronic systems and devices within the residential environment, along with the human desire to simplify life and daily routine, is generating increased interest in the field of home automation (HA) and intelligent environments. A large variety of home automation solutions have been conceptualised or developed. However, many of these solutions are designed by experts and require professionals to install and/or operate them. Furthermore they lack the potential for seamless integration into an already functioning home environment. To bridge the gap between consumer and expert as well as allowing for integration into any existing home environment without physical alteration to the building, a modular home automation solution with seamless integration potential is proposed. The implemented system uses open source software and hardware allowing for development to continue within the existing, large open source community. It can be installed and configured without professional skills or physical alteration of the environment itself and due to its modular design, the system also allows users to add and remove functional components to and from the system providing them with a seamlessly customisable home automation solution. Conceptual design and practical implementations are covered in this document, along with recommendations for both continued research and potential avenues for expansion.

Abstract:
Recent advances in technology have enabled the development of truly autonomous ground vehicles capable of performing complex navigation tasks. As a result, the demand for practical unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) systems has increased dramatically in recent years. Central to these developments is maturation of emerging mobile robotic intelligent and autonomous capability. While the progress UGV technology has been substantial, there are many challenges that still face unmanned vehicle system developers. Foremost is the improvement of perception hardware and intelligent software that supports the evolution of UGV capability. The development of a Next-generation Experimentation Robotic Vehicle (NERV) serves to provide a small UGV baseline platform supporting experimentation focused on progression of the state-of-the-art in unmanned systems. Supporting research and user feedback highlight the needs that provide justification for an advanced small UGV research platform. Primarily, such a vehicle must be based upon open and technology independent system architecture while exhibiting improved mobility over relatively structured terrain. To this end, a theoretical kinematic model is presented for a novel two-body multi degree-of-freedom, four-wheel drive, small UGV platform. The efficacy of the theoretical kinematic model was validated through computer simulation and experimentation on a full-scale proof-of-concept mobile robotic platform. The kinematic model provides the foundation for autonomous multi-body control. Further, a modular system level design based upon the concepts of the Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems (JAUS) is offered as an open architecture model providing a scalable system integration solution. Together these elements provide a blueprint for the development of a small UGV capable of supporting the needs of a wide range of leading-edge intelligent system research initiatives.

Abstract:
The real time monitoring of environment context aware activities, based on distributed detection, is becoming a standard in public safety and service delivery in a wide range of domains (child and elderly care and supervision, logistics, circulation, and other). The safety of people, goods and premises depends on the prompt immediate reaction to potential hazards identified in real time, at an early stage to engage appropriate control actions. Effective emergency response can be supported only by available and acquired expertise or elaborate collaborative knowledge in the domain of distributed detection that include indoor sensing, tracking and localizing. This research proposes a hybrid conceptual multi-agent framework for the acquisition of collaborative knowledge in dynamic complex context aware environments for distributed detection. This framework has been applied for the design and development of a hybrid intelligent multi-agent decision system (HIDSS) that supports a decentralized active sensing, tracking and localizing strategy, and the deployment and configuration of smart detection devices associated to active sensor nodes wirelessly connected in a network topology to configure, deploy and control ad hoc wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This system, which is based on the interactive use of data, models and knowledge base, has been implemented to support fire detection and control access fusion functions aimed at elaborating: An integrated data model, grouping the building information data and WSN-RFID database, composed of the network configuration and captured data, A virtual layout configuration of the controlled premises, based on using a building information model, A knowledge-based support for the design of generic detection devices, A multi-criteria decision making model for generic detection devices distribution, ad hoc WSNs configuration, clustering and deployment, and Predictive data models for evacuation planning, and fire and evacuation simulation. An evaluation of the system prototype has been carried out to enrich information and knowledge fusion requirements and show the scope of the concepts used in data and process modelling. It has shown the practicability of hybrid solutions grouping generic homogeneous smart detection devices enhanced by heterogeneous support devices in their deployment, forming ad hoc networks that integrate WSNs and radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The novelty in this work is the web-based support system architecture proposed in this framework that is based on the use of intelligent agent modelling and multi-agent systems, and the decoupling of the processes supporting the multi-sensor data fusion from those supporting different context applications. Although this decoupling is essential to appropriately distribute the different fusion functions, the integration of several dimensions of policy settings for the modelling of knowledge processes, and intelligent and pro-active decision making activities, requires the organisation of interactive fusion functions deployed upstream to a safety and emergency response.

RFID (Radio-frequency identification) systems have been developed for many years. A conventional RFID system had a unique identification number for each RFID tag and most of them were applied to the identification and object tracking. However, with the increasing demand of internet of things (IoT) applications in the recent years, RFID tags have combined sensors and have the function of data collection and analysis. The thesis focuses on the study of intelligent RFID systems with environmental detection devices and microchips on the basis of UHF RFID technology. The intelligent RFID systems have the features of the unique identification code, environmental detection, autonomous data collection, and data analysis. They provide novel RFID system integration and application solutions. The thesis presents the studies of the system integration and applications of passive UHF RFID electronic tag sensors and microchips. The main research results include an intelligent RFID management system of home appliances and an intelligent RFID aquarium environment sensing system. For the intelligent RFID management system of home appliances, design of directivity antennas with anti-metal interference electronic tags, RFID combined single-chip circuit design, single-chip programming, and reader user interface programming are studied. In addition, an intelligent RFID aquarium environment sensing system is developed and related antenna design and reader user interface programming are undertaken.

Nowadays, teleoperation has been used in the environment that is hazardous or inaccessible for human. The introduction of virtual reality technique to teleoperation provides the operators different viewing angles to look at the environment. In this thesis, we implement a VR-based telerobotic system, and develop an intelligent interface to help the operator for manipulation. Besides providing both 3D environmental visual and force feedbacks, the VR-based telerobotic system utilizes the potential field approach to plan robot path. Thus, this system can provide the operator the functions of obstacle avoidance, guidance toward the goal, and path tracking. We evaluated the its performance through several experiments to see whether better performance on task completion time and contact force can be achieved, when the operator manipulates the robot in the free space or contacting with the environment.

Creating, retrieving, distributing and analyzing heterogeneous information poses significant challenges for future decision-making. With the rapid development of technologies for high-throughput data production and the potential for enormous distributed databases, it is becoming increasingly clear that sophisticated methodology and software solutions will be required to harness the potential of these new vast sources of information. In this study, a framework for integrating data source and software tools by ontology-driven Multi-agent systems approach and Web service technology has been developed. Software services for dynamically retrieving and manipulating information from various knowledge base and platforms in this framework are wrapped as Web Services that are described semantically in terms of domain ontology. The Web Services are registered in a brokering service so that it can be dynamically discovered and invoked by personal agent, which represent user, through matching queries against their semantic descriptions. Two illustration examples implemented in JADE agent platform are provided in this study in order to explain and validate the proposed framework. First example regards to construct Virtual Observatory; while the second example demonstrates how federated search in electronic library can benefit from the proposed framework The contributions of this dissertation can be summarized as follows. Users may invoke a set of services to accomplish the tasks to be done with the assist of personal agent. Due to the autonomous characteristic of agent, it is believed that the users may delegate information processing to personal agent and focus on their core competence. The capabilities offered by agents to query and invoke semantically enriched Web services is based on enhanced registries enriched with semantic information that provide semantic matching to service queries and published service descriptions. Furthermore, new services, agents, and users can be easily added to the proposed framework, thus provide an extendable and flexible open system.

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a new design of the new walker which can provide better support and stability for the severely disabled. And the new walker must include the speed control and the device to prevent the user from falling down. First, the mathematical dynamic model for the new walker is constructed. This model analyzes how the dimension of the walker influences the braking performance. Besides, the rear wheel of the walker is equipped with the electro- magnetic brake (EM brake) which can be triggered by the controller and therefore lock the rear wheel when the speed of the walker is too high. Furthermore, for the sake of the user’s safety, the damping device in the rear wheel can provide appropriate force to prevent the walker from slipping too fast. However, the controller and the EM brake have to work with sufficient supply power. As a result, the controller must be able to provide a good estimation for residual capacity of batteries to avoid possible dangers resulting from the insufficient power supply.

Different types of camera have different advantages and disadvantages for intelligent surveillance applications. Visible cameras cannot correctly recognize suspicious humans when the illumination is insufficient. Near-infrared cameras, which are often used the nighttime and illuminate the environment by LEDs, usually have limited depth of view. Mid-infrared cameras can correctly recognize objects of high temperature in different environments, but the background of the image can be blurred, and the price of camera is high. In this thesis, by integrating heterogeneous cameras, we propose two systems for daytime and nighttime surveillance, respectively. In the daytime system, a visible camera and a mid-infrared camera are used. When the visible camera cannot recognize an object correctly due to low illumination, an approximate outline will be drawn using the data from another camera, and a warning message will be issued. In the nighttime system a near-infrared camera and a mid-infrared camera are used. The system will locate the objects of high temperature using near-infrared LEDs with known positions on the floor.

In order to enhance human skill transfer for compliant task execution, in this thesis, we propose an intelligent human- machine interface to integrate robot manipulators with the virtual reality simulation system. The thesis is divided into two parts. In Part I, we propose a human skill transfer scheme for compliant tasks. Difficulties in dealing with compliant tasks mainly result fromtwo reasons. First, it is hard to describe the process of the compliant task execution precisely. Second, even for the same kind of compliant tasks, when theenvironment features vary, it may invoke different interaction between robot manipulators and the environment. Some researchers proposed using the technique of human skill transfer to tackle the problems aforementioned. The current humanskill transfer schemes are still with many deficiencies because the differences are present between the human and the robot manipulators in their mechanisms andcontrol strategies. We then propose a genetic-based fuzzy scheme to improve the ability in human skill acquisition via its learning capability. The proposed scheme is applied to the deburring compliant task for demonstration. In Part II,we develop a human-machine interface for Robot/VR integration. It not only provides a 3D virtual environment for simulations, but can also communicate withthe external robot manipulator. The operator can control the virtual and real manipulators via this robot/VR interface simultaneously. As the proposed interface can provide much information via simulations before experiment execution, it is also useful when applied to CAD (computer aided design) and CAM(computer aided manufacture).

21st-century intelligent houses are architectural structures that incorporate technologies to meet information, internet, and human needs. Related automatic service systems are introduced into residences in order to attain the overall benefits of service functions. Future development should not involve integration for the sake of integration, but should take into account technology maturity and actual needs as the prerequisites for integration. This study uses literature review as a foundation to posit theoretical concepts for intelligent houses under existing architectural theory. We also examine the development of current intelligent houses, government policies, as well as the functions of various types of equipment available in the industry, and then incorporate the lifestyle needs of family members based on different life cycle perspectives. We participated in relevant intelligent house seminars sponsored by intelligent house alliances, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), and the Institute for Information Industry (III) to consult expert opinion; we also referred to expert opinions from the research results of Architectural and Building Research Institute (Ministry of the Interior, ABRI). We reached the following conclusions: 1. Architectural theories are the key foundation for constructing intelligent houses. 2. Buildings are the vector for intelligent houses and can provide the flexible space needed by function systems. 3. Mixed cabling systems are the nervous networks of intelligent houses and must possess the integrated capabilities of cables of different materials. 4. The space required by mixed cabling systems is of key importance. 5. Function systems are responsible for tasks such as the control, information integration, and determination of terminal equipment. Consequently, the communications protocols of the various function systems must be compatible. 6. Terminal equipment is responsible for executing the identification, scanning, and warnings for smart functions or for providing direct services functions. Consequently, different brands must have substitutable interfaces for universal use. 7. People are the controllers of intelligent houses and are responsible for constructing and protecting systems; they are the recipients of system benefits. 8. The equipment of smart houses must meet natural, energy-saving, safety, and comfort needs, and must have smart substitutable functions in accordance with human life cycles.
