Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is on intellectuals trained as academics in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland who have settled in Australia during the 1980s and 1990s. The study explores the major issues influencing these migrant intellectuals in their decision to migrate to Australia. The study concentrates on two crucial phases of the migration process as articulated by Demuth (2000a), the starting or decision making phase, and the sojournal phase when migrant intellectuals have more (or less) settled in their new country. Focus on these two phases allows exploration of why some intellectuals decide to emigrate, whilst others (in apparently similar circumstances) decide to remain, and why some intellectuals settle permanently in their new country, whilst others after a period of living away, repatriate. The actual research, then, was carried out both in East Central Europe and in Australia. Intellectuals in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland were interviewed, and academic literature was explored to ascertain the position and status of intellectuals in East Central Europe before and after 1989, the year of major social and political transformation in the region. Interviews in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland dealt specifically with the views of intellectuals on emigration - whether they had contemplated emigration themselves and their opinions on the motives of others emigrating or returning. Within the Australian context, this research involves examination of Australian immigration policies in relation to university educated immigrants, and analysis of in-depth interviews conducted with academics from Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland who have settled in Australia. East Central European emigration trends and Australian immigration policies are discussed jointly to gain a general sense of the context in which the interviewed academics migrated. The interviews conducted with East Central European academics encompass issues relating to their current circumstances in Australia, their experiences with diverse university cultures, how they interpret their biographies and construct relationships with their countries of origin by means of maintaining links with their former colleagues and academic institutions in East Central Europe. Interviews also explore the possibility of repatriation. This study provides an insight into the current position of intellectuals in East Central Europe and how this position is viewed by East Central European academics settled in Australia. It is proposed in the thesis that the social role of intellectuals in East Central Europe has declined after 1989, and that this has influenced the intellectual identity of both intellectuals who remained in East Central Europe and those who immigrated to Australia.

Abstract:
Through an analysis of three different periods in Brazilian history and a study of discourse and knowledge production in the field of education, the thesis aims to disclose the relationship between produced knowledge and the implementation of effective change in the Brazilian education system. Firstly, using the work of Gramsci, Foucault and Bauman, the thesis examines the concept of intellectuals in order to grasp the functions and roles played by intellectuals in different historical and social contexts. In addition, discourse analysis is used as a reference to understand the net of knowledge-power production and its relation with three loci or systems: academia, civil society and the state. These two elements constitute the theoretical support for undertaking the historical analysis in the thesis. Secondly, with specific reference to education, the thesis proceeds to a historical study of intellectuals in Brazil, showing how the colonial and neo-colonial structures based on the dominance of the European and US metropolis have left a deep mark on national consciousness. It argues that intellectuals were not only formed in Europe and the United States of America, but also that their knowledge production is undertaken within a paradigm constituted by exogenous models. Consequently, intellectuals of education, in particular, are not aware of the requirement for a suitable re-interpretation of theories in order to meet Brazilian social and educational needs. Thirdly, the thesis shows how educators are grounded in this circle of reproduction of exogenous models and how their subordination to them has increased, without ever managing to take into account Brazilian cultural reality. One example used, the subordination to models from the USA, shows how this has been increasing quickly since the 1960s, leading to almost the totality of national investment in post graduate studies being made in US universities. Finally, the thesis investigates three different historical periods in Brazil during the 20th century to disclose the visible and the invisible discourse of Brazilian educational thought and how the structures and mechanisms of power are organized in Brazilian society. These structures of power and knowledge have led to a dramatic situation in the Brazilian educational system which can, still, be ranked among the poorer countries of the world, in spite of having a relatively advanced economy. The thesis argues that the ideas produced by the educational intellectual establishment do not get into practice largely because they do not achieve answers to Brazilian needs or have a specifically Brazilian cultural identification.

Abstract:
A new kind of social movements are not only introducing individuals from within the masses to new political and social topics, and raising their interest and activity in political education and participation, but also enabling their ability to learn, discuss, deliberate, share, and organize themselves for making the political institutions of the society to work for their interests. This hypothesis was formulated in order to aid the process of finding an answer to the research question: how are digital technologies helping in the development process of organic intellectuals? Based on the concepts presented by Manuel Castells and Antonio Gramsci, a qualitative analysis of the responses collected in four countries across four different continents using semi-structured interviews presented the evidence used to validate the above hypothesis. The research also examines couple of main aspects of the online environment in relation to a global web movement. One is relating to the major criticisms of online political participation such as 'Digital Divide', 'Clicktivism', and 'Simplification', while the second is relating to the dilution of the concept of 'Sovereignty'. The gathered data allows this research to argue against the criticisms, and problematize the concept of national sovereignty. This research questions the general assumption that a global action in support of local issues is based on solidarity, and presents a different perspective focused on the right to demand action based on an identification of global citizenship.

Abstract:
The notion of the 'public intellectual' has been a recurring discussion topic within sociology and the humanities for decades. Yet it has been largely neglected within media and cultural studies. Accordingly, few scholars have discussed in much depth how public intellectuals operate within the media and what functions this media role may facilitate. Intellectuals in the Australian Press is an exploration into this generally overlooked area of scholarship. It aims to provide three levels of insight into the topic. Firstly, the study looks closely at the appearance and the function of public intellectuals in the Australian press. It outlines how public intellectuals contribute to the newspapers and how newspapers contribute to Australian public intellectual life. Secondly, the thesis outlines and examines in detail three types of public intellectual in Australia. Specifically, it examines the journalist, the academic and the think tank researcher as types of intellectual who write regularly for Australia's newspapers. Thirdly, Intellectuals in the Australian Press delivers detailed intellectual biographies of three of Australia's most prominent press intellectuals, each of whom exemplifies one of these three categories. These commentators are The Australian's Paul Kelly, The Age's Robert Manne, and the Sydney Morning Herald's Gerard Henderson.

Abstract:
Abstract When the People's Republic of China (PRC) was founded in 1949, social structure had changed dramatically and the class identity of intellectual groups was the first to be affected severely. The remodeling of class identity and reconstruction of discourse system of the intellectuals needed to be addressed as quickly as possible so as to serve the new regime. And the event that the elite liberal intellectuals in colleges and universities boycotted the adjustment on faculty policies of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) had triggered the first large-scale ideological transforming movement after the foundation of PRC. `New' discourse mode constructed by Mao Tsetung was infused into transformers' minds being transformed in this movement, and finally the `red' revolutionary knowledge discourse had totally replaced the traditional knowledge discourse of intellectuals in colleges and universities. From the research perspectives of political communication and discourse analysis, this thesis places this Ideological Transforming Movement of Chinese Intellectuals during 1951 to 1952 into a political and cultural background of the era; manifests the innovation, overlapping and confrontation between the `new' discourse constructed by Mao Tsetung and the traditional discourse of the Chinese traditional intellectuals and the contemporary intellectuals coming into being from in the May 4th Movement; and analyses the application of `new' discourse in intellectual groups in the ideological transforming movement, reveals the discourse propagation tools and power exertion strategies in the ideological transforming movement in the new China under Mao's dominion. It is considered in this thesis that Mao took the `class' as a core discourse, populism and revolutionary narration as contents, redefined `knowledge' and `intellectual', and thus created a new set of `red' knowledge discourse and ideology system. In the intellectual ideological transforming movement, this new, systematic and coverall explanation system utilized `class' to convert the power status between elite intellectuals and people at the bottom of the society, as well as linked it with morality to stimulate the intellectuals' sense of `original sin'. Meanwhile, with the upgrading `stigmatization' and language violence as well as the idolization of `prophet language' of Mao Tsetung in the mass movement after 1949, the elite intellectuals finally discarded the previous knowledge discourse and embrace the `red' current discourse. However, the discourse system constructed by Mao based on the basis of `expressive reality' which broke away from social reality, therefore, as Mao Tsetung, the authority core of the discourse system, disappeared, the overall discourse system constructed by him also collapsed. Nevertheless, the ideological reforming movement in the 1950s exposed a discourse predicament that intellectual elites who advocated `independent thinking and spirit freedom' were jointly facing, which also persists with the Chinese intellectuals nowadays.

Abstract:
This research examines British intellectual debates on warfare throughout the mid-20th century. The thesis identifies different discourses that emerged as a result of the changes in international relations and military technology at this time. It posits that intellectual contribution on the whole had a more significant impact than many historians have previously accredited. The thesis examines the work of specific intellectuals that made significant and detailed input into these debates and identifies their role in framing these discourses, as individuals and as part of a larger intellectual community. It also highlights the involvement of these intellectuals within the state apparatus and links their intellectual contribution to their role in government. The subject of war and its perception by intellectuals is conspicuously absent in the historiography on British intellectuals. Some of the most important studies of British intellectuals, including Stefan Collini’s Absent Minds, have engaged only slightly or not at all with the intellectual discourse surrounding international relations and warfare. This thesis attempts to fill this gap for the middle of the 20th century and demonstrates that warfare became a prolific and highly visible part of the contribution of intellectuals to British life. Recent literature has attempted to discuss the British state as a warfare state, rejecting arguments on British declinism. The thesis engages with this debate, and while it focuses on Britain’s approach to warfare, it also challenges the interpretation of Britain as either a welfare or a warfare state. The study of intellectuals does not feature heavily within this historiography on British warfare. While historians, such as David Edgerton, engage with specific intellectuals and their writings, a discussion of intellectual discourse does not appear within these analyses. This thesis argues that intellectuals as a group developed ideas and arguments on warfare and the British state in conjunction with one another, creating an intellectual discourse which influenced political decision making and public opinion. The thesis also examines a more modern understanding of the intellectual: the expert. Using both scientific and military thinkers, the thesis explores how experts became intellectuals in response to the growing threat of warfare and the rise of a military-industrial complex. Using intellectuals that conform to the classic definition alongside expert intellectuals, the thesis highlights the importance of analysing both groups as part of the larger whole, and discusses the similarities and differences between the works generated by these intellectuals. The thesis spans the years from 1932 to 1963 and discusses the continuities between intellectual debates across this period. The post-war years and the nuclear conflict feature heavily within this analysis, but the thesis highlights the importance of the 1930s in influencing later intellectual perceptions of the nuclear age and the fight against communism. The majority of this research resulted from sources published within the public domain including monographs, newspaper and periodical articles, public speeches and radio broadcasts. The research also uses the personal archives of the individual intellectuals and political documents from the time, including papers from the Ministry of Defence located in the National Archives, Defence White Papers and the Hansard House of Commons official reports.

Abstract:

As cult, quality, and mainstream television have merged, a new breed of show has evolved; such shows raise complicated themes and incorporate deep meanings. Drawing from Abercrombie and Longhurst’s (1998) audience continuum, this study focuses on the more casual portion of fandom previously overlooked in fan studies. These “everyday fans” differ from their cultist and enthusiast counterparts by limiting television to a hobby, not engaging in creative production, and not seeking out fan networks. The interviews with sixteen everyday fans as well as four cultists/enthusiasts ground Lost fandom in previous fan traditions and also explore the experience of a previously overlooked segment of the audience. Using ABC's LOST, this study shows how mainstream, everyday fans often unconsciously think about practical and profound issues of everyday philosophy simply by following characters and storylines. In effect, viewers of the show become "accidental intellectuals." LOST raises issues of love, redemption, science versus faith and good versus evil. The interviews with everyday fans reflect that viewers were not only using critical thinking in puzzling out the show’s mysteries but also engaging in deep analysis, personal identification, and the pondering of profound moral dilemmas through the medium of the characters, often without realizing it

Dunlop, Joseph. "La Relève : Catholic intellectuals in Quebec, 1930-1950." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2013. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:87a80921-1aa8-4324-9afa-000b2572581b.

Abstract:
This study traces the intellectual and political itinerary of the review La Relève, an influential cultural journal in 1930s and ‘40s Quebec, in order to explore broader trends within francophone Catholicism in the middle decades of the twentieth century. La Relève enjoyed a unique role as a propagator of French Catholic thought in Quebec due to its close ties with the prominent French Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain. In the early ‘30s, members of the Relève group espoused a militant Catholicism with conservative-minded nationalist sympathies. The group’s encounter with Maritain in October 1934, however, moved La Relève towards a more communitarian Catholicism which was open to social and religious pluralism. During the later ‘30s, the Relèvistes would display a new interest in democratic forms of politics, reflecting the larger ‘democratic turn’ evident amongst many francophone Catholic intellectuals. In examining this shift, this study argues that the progressive Catholicism embraced by La Relève remained strongly rooted in longstanding Catholic social teachings and mentalities, thereby shedding light upon the political trajectory of the larger French Catholic Revival during this period. The emergence of a ‘Left’ Catholicism in France and Quebec was the result of a gradual and often contradictory process in which new attempts to engage with pluralism, democracy and human rights were heavily influenced by the traditionally anti-liberal and anti-individualistic perspectives of Catholic social and political thought. This study also examines the social and cultural environment of Catholic intellectual engagement in Quebec during this period, focusing upon the role played by friendship in defining the experiences of the Relève circle during the 1930s and ‘40s. Initially the product of a close-knit and often cliquish group of former schoolmates, La Relève provided a forum for masculine solidarity and shared intellectual and religious pursuits. The Relèvistes' conception of friendship expanded over the course of the decade, reflecting their exposure to the ideas of the French Catholic intelligentsia, for whom the idea of friendship signalled a wider community bound together by common religious, social and political goals. During the war years, the Relève group came to play a new role within the larger francophone Catholic intellectual community, founding a publishing company which printed numerous anti-fascist Catholic authors. In the postwar period, however, contact with the European intellectual milieu diminished, as the review closed in 1948 and the Relèvistes embraced new trends in Catholic thought which ultimately distanced them from Maritain. However, intellectual engagement with French Catholic thought would continue on in Quebec through the review Cité libre, which would play an important role in shaping politics and society in Quebec and Canada during the later twentieth century.

Gentile, Francesca. "Speaking to Crisis: Intellectuals, Literacy, and Public Discourse." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/20682.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes public-intellectual work that deploys crisis tropes in its treatment of literacy, arguing that such work provides insight into the influence that intellectual engagement might exert on discourse in the public sphere. From A.S. Hill’s lament that freshman entering Harvard in 1874 could barely construct a legible sentence to Stanley Fish’s charge that millions of college graduates earning degrees in 2005 did so without learning what a sentence was, the relationship between literacy and the communicative skills required of productive citizens has been a constant source of concern. Between these two historical moments, this relationship has been an undertheorized feature of debates surrounding racial uplift, feminist protest, and America’s role as a world power. When interlocutors in such debates minimize the significance of literacy practices, they encourage rhetorical action driven by a coercive conception of social crisis that limits critical engagement on the part of the public. I argue that the public intellectual’s capacity to facilitate rhetorically literate discursive exchange at the level of the mass public can transform the paralysis of crisis into possibility. I reframe well-known debates between W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington, Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem, and Mortimer Adler and Glenn T. Seaborg in terms of the rhetorical models they offer for responsible public-intellectual work.

Abstract:
"In France, Philosophy is deemed to be one of the main disciplines from which the Human Sciences were formed following a process of specialization. This prestigious, wide-ranging domain, formerly deeply rooted within the scholarly sphere spawned a number of intellectual "defectors" involved in the construction of new disciplines (such as Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, or Psychoanalysis). In a reflexive perspective on the conditions of emergence and empowerment of disciplines, we have undertaken an investigation dedicated to clarifying the principles of one distinct feature of the intellectual history of the country: the frequency of conversion of philosophers towards other regions of academia. We will also attempt to measure the effects. The period ranging from the late 1960s to the end of the 1970s strikes us as being of particular interest due to the profound changes undergone in the university world, and therefore constitutes a privileged field of inquiry. Abstract:
In the Kurdish society, the role of Kurdish intellectuals regarding political and social transformations is crucial. According to the history of the Kurdish society, its nature on its composition, Kurdish intellectuals have their own particularities. Therefore they are to be distinguished from other intellectuals. Somehow, Kurdish intellectuals have always took part to the liberation of Kurdistan. The main part of the work was dedicated to the cultural climate existing in th Kurdish society. Which are the cultural organizations and their role in a Muslim society? How do they work? Which place take media organs, education and higher education in Kurdistan? Do they have any influence on intellectuals? Do unions and juridical bodies have a real function in Kurdistan? Many secondary sources as newspapers, review and survey, specialized or non-specialized journals depending upon the importance of delivered information were used, as well as many websites. Besides, some TV shows were viewed (political meeting and debates with intellectuals). A fieldwork in Kurdistan was undertaken to carry out this work, mainly in the cites of Suleimany and Erbil. For security reasons, the city ok Kirkuk was ruled out. Some temporal constrains did not allow any meeting with intellectuals from Dehuk. Thence, the work is focusing on two cities only. However intellectuals from each categories mentioned above were interviewed

Abstract:
This study seeks to explore the articulated views and behavior of an important segment of Chinese population-- politically conscious intellectuals--toward the United States over the period of 1945-1950. During this period, warm Chinese feelings toward America as demonstrated during World War II when the United States was China's critical ally gradually switched to suspicion and resentment. Chapter 1 reviews Chinese intellectuals' views of the United States as developed during the first half of the twentieth century, and argues that the United States fluctuated, in the eyes of many urban educated elite, between inspiration and threat. Chapter 2 discusses the emergence of critical Chinese attitudes toward the United States government soon after WWII, as politically articulate Chinese began to question the role the American government played in China's internal political disputes. Chapter 3 examines the Shen Chong incident, and contends that ardent student demands for the immediate departure of American troops from China and for an end to American involvement in Chinese politics disturbed the American observers, discredited the Chinese Nationalist Party and benefitted the Communist cause. Chapter 4 focuses on the strong Chinese reaction toward the "reversed" American occupation policy in Japan in 1948, and concludes that the U. S. government had lost the heart and support of many Chinese intellectuals before the Communist takeover. Chapter 5 treats the CCP's full exploitation of Chinese intellectuals' various grievances against the United States government in mobilizing the large-scale Resist America, Aid Korea campaign. Vehement intellectual insistence that the United States government refrain from interfering in China's political struggles during the period in question developed in the broader political and social context of Chinese patriotic passion for national identity and unity. Chinese obsession with national self-determination persists down to the present day. This study hopes to shed light on a specific political phenomenon and its relevance to Chinese political values and the dynamics of Sino-American relations.

Abstract:
Martin Luther supported the development of the early German educational system on the basis of both religious and social ideals. His impact endured in the emphasis on obedience and duty to the state evident in the north German educational system throughout the early modern period and the nineteenth century. Luther taught that the state was a gift from God and that service to the state was a personal vocation. This thesis explores the extent to which a select group of nineteenth century German philosophers and historians reflect Luther's teachings. Chapters II and III provide historiography on this topic, survey Luther's view of the state and education, and demonstrate the adherence of nineteenth century German intellectuals to these goals. Chapters IV through VII examine the works respectively of Johann Gottfried Herder, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Leopold von Ranke, and Wilhelm Dilthey, with focus on the interest each had in the reformer's work for its religious, and social content. The common themes found in these authors' works were: the analysis of the membership of the individual in the group, the stress on the uniqueness of individual persons and cultures, the belief that familial authority, as established in the Fourth Commandment, provided the basis for state authority, the view that the state was a necessary and benevolent institution, and, finally, the rejection of revolution as a means of instigating social change. This work explains the relationship between Luther's view of the state and its interpretation by later German scholars, providing specific examples of the way in which Herder, Hegel, Ranke, and Dilthey incorporated in their writings the reformer's theory of the state. It also argues for the continued importance of Luther to later German intellectuals in the area of social and political theory.

Abstract:
The idea to analyse Soviet intellectuals appeared while considering the history of Sąjūdis and the reestablishment of Lithuanian independence. The intellectuals, who shared nationalist and public ideas, consolidated on June 3, 1988 and mobilized all Lithuanian society, had to base their activities on social relations, values and certain attitudes, which existed and evolutionized in one or another form during the whole period of annexation. The aim of this thesis is to examine the features of informal groups of Lithuanian intellectuals and the development of the philosophical thought in informal and official environment in the period of 1956-1988. The novelty of the dissertation is the fact that the intellectuals and their activities during the Soviet times are not viewed individually but by the dynamics of their created groups, which operated both in informal and official sphere, and had the features of primary and secondary groups. It was easy to notice and emphasize the peculiarities of alternative collective identity formation. Besides, the described manifestation of philosophical consciousness and philosophical research are provided as an alternative to the Soviet regime for the first time in the Lithuanian historiography. In addition, the research seeks to describe the social, professional, intellectual and theoretical activities of the same social layer. Other researchers should also be interested in the dimension of citizenship and of informal intellectual groups... [to full text]
Idėja tyrinėti sovietmečio intelektualus kilo žvelgiant į Sąjūdžio ir Lietuvos nepriklausomybės atkūrimo istoriją. Lietuvoje.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the processes of framing that took place within a matrix comprising influential intellectuals, a potent Arab media outlet whose audience amounts to tens of millions of Arab spectators, and the vibrant social movements calling for political change in Egypt and Libya in 2011. It explores the various forms of meaning construction carried out by al-Jazeera and the intellectuals it regularly hosted to comment on the uprisings in both countries as they occurred. By addressing two case studies defined by different contextualizing variables, the thesis illustrates how al-Jazeera’s commentators were part and parcel of the network’s output and its daily engagement with its audiences. The thesis examines the means through which these intellectuals capitalized on the channel’s powerful broadcast imagery to articulate their interpretations of the unfolding uprisings and propose alternative political possibilities. It argues that the network’s intricate processes of meaning construction rendered it an institutional organic intellectual with an ability to communicate persuasive messages and accordingly incite mass mobilization. It also contends that al-Jazeera’s attempts to void long-sustained regime legitimacies, by countering their narratives and critically engaging with their political rationale, have contributed to redesigning political realities in the cases under study.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to isolate the variable giftedness in a pipulation and determine whether that variable could be used as a predictor of public library use. The analysis of data indicated that public library use was higher for the general public than for the gifted adults. There was less variation among the factors of age, level of education, and public library use for the gifted adults than for the general public. Books as a resource for information were mentioned by the general adults public more frequently than by the gifted adults. Friends were listed more often as an information resource by the gifted population than by the public. Gifted adults both read and owned more books than did the general public. There was no correlation between amount of reading and number of library visits in either sample. 35 of the general public has a Library Usage Index Value of less than 4, 97 of the gifted adults did. There was almost no difference between the first ten information sources listen by both samples.

Abstract:
The research topic focuses on the French intellectual field of the last decade of the 20th century, which is understood in the light of intellectual actions and representations of the process of destruction of the second Yugoslavia and the wars for its legacy. The events that occurred in Yugoslavia in the 1990s are perceived as a "affair" in the sense given by the French sociologists Luc Boltanski and Élisabeth Claverie. The main objective of this research work was therefore to answer several decisive questions based on a prosopographical approach of intellectuals, as well as to analyse their actions and representations. More precisely, the question was: a) What are the modalities and forms of intervention in the polemical space built around the "Yugoslav affair" (1991-1999); b) How is this given space structured through competition and antagonisms between individuals and groups? c) What is the logic of receiving the destruction of Yugoslavia in France? In other words: is it mainly linked to events in the former Yugoslavia or to political issues within France? Have these different representations evolved, and in what ways? d) How do the positions taken fit into the dominant balance of power in France? Have they strengthened existing structures? To answer these questions, I used the tools of political sociology, historical sociology, sociology of knowledge and sociology of intellectuals. The most important theoretical foundations have been drawn mainly from Pierre Bourdieu's field theory, Antonio Gramsci's theory of cultural hegemony and Vojin Milic's theory of social functions of ideas and knowledge. As for the research methods used, I used multiple correspondence analysis, socio-historical analysis, interviews and critical discourse analysis

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the status of Chinese intellectuals from 1980 to 2005 and its diachronic change in this period as represented by dialogues between intellectuals and their leaders in fiction. June 1989 functions as a historical dividing line on which to base this diachronic study. In order to carry out the study, firstly, the direct speech of intellectuals and their leaders is extracted and compiled into corpora for a key key-words analysis. Secondly, a stylistic analysis is undertaken with the aim of conducting a more detailed qualitative investigation of the dialogues. Three dialogues in each of the two periods are selected for the stylistic analysis. The key key-words derived describe features of the speech of intellectuals, the speech of intellectuals as compared to the speech of leaders, and the speech of leaders as compared to that of intellectuals. The study shows that the key key-words indicating topics of the speech and the key key-words characterising the style of the speech represent the social identity of intellectuals. A comparison of these key key-words between the two periods uncovers the diachronic change in the status of intellectuals. The corpus approach is complemented by a stylistic analysis, which explores dialogues selected from different years to emphasise the diachronic change. A dual model is formulated to incorporate dialogue analysis into a larger structure of goal development analysis. The study shows how speakers use discursive strategies to manage relationships and have their situational goals achieved in interaction. Negotiation of goals invokes the institutional and social identities of speakers, bringing out their status. The research shows that the corpus. approach and the stylistic analysis can be combined to present a more comprehensive description of data. Hopefully it sheds some light on studies of post-Cultural Revolution Chinese intellectuals and on how quantitative and qualitative approaches merge in the investigation of interaction between superiors and subordinates.
