Abstract:
Trait Intellect, one of the two ‘aspects’ of the broader Openness/Intellect ‘domain’, predicts performance on a range of cognitive tasks including tests of intelligence and working memory. This has been explained in terms of the tendency for high–Intellect individuals to explore, or engage more effortfully with, abstract information. This theoretical perspective can be framed in the language of Resource Allocation Theory, in terms of high–Intellect individuals allocating more of their available cognitive resources to abstract cognitive tasks. In two experiments (total N = 160), we examined the relation between Intellect and cognitive engagement during a primary word–search task under conditions of both high and low secondary cognitive load. Both experiments revealed that high–Intellect individuals were more vulnerable to the impact of the secondary cognitive load on primary task performance. This suggests that, under low secondary load, such individuals were indeed allocating more of their available cognitive resources to the primary task. These results held after controlling for trait Openness, trait Industriousness (an aspect of Conscientiousness) and a measure of working memory capacity (N–back task). Our findings provide novel support for the cognitive mechanisms proposed to underlie trait Intellect. Copyright © 2016 European Association of Personality Psychology

Abstract:
The ArgumentNaturalization confers authority on beliefs, conventions, and claims, but what kind of authority? Because the meaning of nature has a history, so does that of naturalization:naturalization is not the same tactic when marshaled in, say, eighteenth-century France and in late nineteenth-century Britain. Although the authority of nature may be invoked in both cases, the import of that authority depends crucially on whether nature is understood normatively or descriptively, within the framework of the natural laws of jurisprudence or within that of the natural laws of mechanics. During the early modern period, the denotative center of gravity of the word “nature” shifted dramatically. Writings about the female intellect are particularly well suited to reflect and focus these changes for three reasons: first, as with so many aspects of gender identity, what was distinctively female about women's way of thinking was usually alleged to be part and parcel of their “nature”; second, thepolitical and social implications of the female intellect were debated heatedly and in unprecedented detail, particularly in France; and third, the actual content of beliefs about what traits sex the intellect as female remained relatively constant during this period, despite sharp differences of opinion over their putative “natural” causes. The female intellect was naturalized not once but repeatedly, and therein lies its value for a history of naturalization.

Abstract:
The fifth factor in lexical studies of trait adjectives is commonly interpreted as Intellect, whereas the corresponding factor derived from questionnaire studies is typically identified as Openness to Experience. Intellect as a construct is problematic because it erroneously suggests an equivalence of Factor V with intelligence, describes aspects of Factor III (Conscientiousness) as well as of Factor V, and fails to suggest the diverse psychological correlates that Factor V is known to have. By contrast, Openness to Experience is a broader construct that implies both receptivity to many varieties of experience and a fluid and permeable structure of consciousness. Data from analyses of adjectives, established personality questionnaires, and Hartmann's (1991) new Boundary Questionnaire support these interpretations. The construct of Openness can be transported across geographical and cultural boundaries to function as a universal dimension of personality structure.

Abstract:
Over the last 20-years, markets come to dominate the way 'resources' are managed. The expansion of the market doctrine has at its core the belief that the apporpiate private property rights are the best way to promote innovation and protect freedoms. The scramble over the private property rights is now well entrenched in the intellectual property arena, with countless examples of patents entering areas that once seemed inconceivable. Thi article moves from Bollier's (2002) disucssion of the concept to argue that intellect, rather than being commodity that is promoted by private property rights is rather a commons— specifically a 'cultural commons'. As such, the process of commodification turn intellect into intellectual property—limiting availability. As a commons, if intellect is to be prmoted, it must be open and shared in the public sphere. In contrast to the ongoing commodification of all aspects of life, social movements and academics are begining to rediscover the commons. This rediscovery now takes the battle between the dominant forces of free market fundamentalism and those who oppose them, into the cultural sphere.

Abstract:
One of the most interesting unsolved problems in cognitive ethology studies is associated with the interaction of hereditarily determined behavioral patterns and the skills based on individual and social experience, and with the ability to apply the results of this interaction to new situations. Human intellect may be characterized by outstanding versatility. Representatives of different animal species exhibit extremely complex forms of cognitive activity, but within very narrow domains. Cognitive behavior is based on a set of features, which include species-specific filtering of stimuli, innate tendency to form certain associative links and prohibit the formation of other, genetically determined set of stereotypes, early experience. Speciesspecific limitations shape specialized cognitive development in different species, including humans.

Abstract:
The notion of higher education efficiency is multifaceted and can be viewed from a variety of perspectives in modern Russia. Students acquiring higher education invest their intellect and their money to ensure their professional efficiency and professional prosperity. Due to human capital intensification, the community can prepare to efficiently meet progress-associated challenges. The aim of the article is to analyze higher education efficiency through the use of social-psychological and social-economic approaches in relation to such factors as students’ individual characteristics, family characteristics, gender peculiarities, marital status and children, higher education quality, career prospects. The research focuses on psychological aspects of economic determinants of higher education efficiency, which predetermines the novelty and theoretical significance of the research. The article focuses on practical issues of higher education acquisition and university graduates’ career prospects. The research highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary assessment of higher education efficiency, where social and psychological aspects serve as non-material predictors. Future research should focus on the analysis of the changing educational environment. Social-psychological aspects and salary prospects should be investigated as non-material assets of higher education and indices of higher education efficiency in the conditions of digital economy.

Abstract:
This article presents ideological intersections of personality’s analysis in the Armenian and Russian social-philosophical thought. In particular, between Russian sociologists of the end of XIX and the beginning of XX centuries (A.I.Stronin, N.I.Kareev) and the Armenian philosophers of IV - VIII centuries (Мesrop Мashtots, David Аnhakht). First are discussed Мesrop Mashtots’ ideas about developing personality’s cognitive abilities and social-pedagogical aspects of personality in A.I.Stronin’s manuscript. The Russian and Armenian thinkers are united by aspiration to show education significance for personality’s development. The second issue is the essence of practical and theoretical philosophy according to David Аnhakht and theoretical and practical aspect of personality’s analysis according to A.I.Stronin’s conception. In total, the approaches of David Аnhakht and A.I.Stronin agree in the opinion that the practical and theoretical aspects of personality’s analysis are complementary to each other, by submitting a personality as harmoniously developed social creature. Thirdly, this paper deals with the David Аnhakht’s conception of human emotional world, ethic aspect of personality’s analysis in the A.I.Stronin’s manuscript and morality in personality’s formation according to N.I.Kareev. The central idea that unites David Аnhakht, A.I.Stronin and N.I.Kareev is the following: the main factor in personality’s development is perfection by means of intellect and height of morality.

Wambugu, Jacob Ngunyi. "Race, gender and intelligence : a comparative study of Black, White and Indian students' lay theories of intelligence." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/1896.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated Black, White, and Indian South African university students' lay theories of intelligence. 260 students participated in this study, with an age range of 18 - 39 years. The study, which is based on the theory of multiple intelligences, explored everyday perceptions of intelligence across race groups in a South African setting. The independent variables of interest were race/culture and gender, while overall and multiple intelligences served as dependent variables. Participants were asked to rate their own overall (general) as well as multiple intelligences. They were then asked to rate the overall as well as multiple intelligences of in-group (same race) and out-group (different race) members of both genders. There was a statistically significant race effect, with White and Indian students giving Black students lower ratings and Black students in turn giving White and Indian students lower ratings. This may be a result of historically racialized discourses that still influence everyday perceptions of the 'Other'. There was a statistically significant gender effect with females giving higher estimates to not only themselves, but also to mates as well for all the multiple intelligences. It can be postulated that this may be a consequence of a population that has been sensitized to gender stereotyping, in addition to educational institutions promoting female friendly policies.

Abstract:
The educational system across the world is undergoing a transition and is affected by numerous factors encompassing technology to psychology. The traditional model of face-to-face teacher-led learning approach has been gradually shifted to student-centric and outcome-based learning. Though the intellect and learning capacities among students differ in many aspects, personalized attention of the teacher to student and practical exposure to subjects are considered as few significant areas of concern in curriculum and pedagogy. The late 2000s witnessed the dawn of many EdTech companies proclaiming personalized attention and experiential learning through online platforms. EdTech companies make fine use of social media marketing and adopt well-thought-out strategies to reach out to the student segment and parents. The prime objective of this chapter is to study the role of social media marketing strategies in capturing student segments and the influence that makes on parents' purchase decisions.

Abstract:
Environmental, social, and governance aspects of developing international business are closely connected with financial performance and resources aimed at enhancing the business from within. Sustainable business metrics are both quantitative and qualitative, core and expended ones that complete traditional economic gauges. They are systemized into four themes: people, planet, prosperity, and governance, which serve as the methodical framework for accelerating appropriate performance information. Understanding these themes helps international business to improve management, translating into making arrangements for international business market adaptation and developing an internal environment. Being aware of and effectively managing sustainable aspects of business assists in minimizing potential legal and reputation-related risks for businesses, especially those with intricate value chains. Additionally, it stimulates innovation, draws top talent, strengthens customer-centric approaches, increases employee contentment, and secures the necessary permits for local market operations. Artificial intelligence, as one of the main technologies, helps to be sustainable for companies in respect to mitigation, adaptation, resilience, and fundamentals, especially in the theme of the planet. The main advantage of using this technology is the possibility to gather, compete, and process data; fortify the process of planning and enhance the quality of decision-making; optimize processes; and support collaborative ecosystems.

Abstract:
Abstract The tensions described in Chapter 2 gradually slackened from about 1850, as powerful voices within the Church of England, including those of parish clergymen, popular novelists, and headmasters of public schools, began to call for a more positive view of sport. Two factors were of paramount importance in this change. One was the social crisis of the 1830s and 1840s. Churchmen recognized that lack of time and facilities for recreation was one of the grievances of the working class and they hoped that sport might be a means of reconciliation between the classes. A second was a reaction against what were seen as the puritanical excesses of many Evangelicals, and the rise of the Broad Church movement. This provided the most influential exponents of what came to be called ‘muscular Christianity’. Muscular Christians espoused a new kind of masculinity, which accepted some aspects of the older ideal of ‘the sportsman’, while rejecting others, and pointing ‘manliness’ in different directions. Gradually the new ideas came to be accepted by those in other church parties and then in other denominations. This chapter examines these debates, and also the increasingly proactive role of the churches and other religious organizations in pushing sport in new directions.

Abstract:
The chapter is devoted to the study of various, important, according to students, aspects and problems associated with admission to residency, and conditionally consists of two main parts – a review (performed as an introduction) and an experimental one. At the beginning of the chapter (review part), general data on the profession of a doctor are given, the most significant requirements for a medical student, which are necessary in his future work, are considered and summarized. Among the many individual aspects, the importance of having a well-developed intellect, communication skills and stress resistance is especially emphasized. Then, information is summarized on the general modern «problems» of admission to residency, which is a logical continuation of 6-year study at a university and allows you to gain knowledge in one of the «narrow» specialties. The second part of the article is presented by a scientific study, which included 200 students of the Voronezh State Medical University. N.N. Burdenko, divided into 2 groups of 100 people, depending on the course: 1 group – 3 course, 2 group – 6 course. After studying the gender and age composition of the subjects, the students were asked to answer a number of questions on a questionnaire specially developed by the authors – about overall satisfaction with the learning process at the university and its various aspects, including lectures, practical classes, readiness to continue studying in residency, etc. Then the level of stress of students of both groups was studied and analyzed – in the normal state, during the examination session and when discussing / thinking about entering the residency. The final, but most significant part of the study was the identification and subsequent study of the most important aspects / problems of a social and psychological nature that affect admission to residency, according to students. The determination of these points was carried out by the ranking method. The results obtained indicated the existence of an acute problem of admission to residency and may be of interest to all higher school teachers involved in the educational process of a medical university.

Abstract:
This chapter traces Anna Letitia Barbauld’s long-standing project to reassert an emotional aspect to Rational Dissenting prayer, which threatened to slip into sterilely intellectual contemplation. However, evoking various affective legacies relevant to Dissenting sensibility—from Isaac Watts to Edward Young—creates poems that struggle to reconcile the competing pulls of reason and passion. Whilst a scene she inherits from the thought of the Unitarian theologian Joseph Priestley—the solitary intellect meditating silently on the sublimity of the divine—overhangs her work, she moves increasingly beyond it. She experiments with greater degrees of affect in both verse and prose hymns, and the chapter concludes by examining a final Barbauldian understanding of the emotions of prayer as intrinsically social and intersubjective.

Abstract:
This chapter studies the emphasis on the role “spectacle” plays in media and political discourse and media reliance upon hot or controversial imagery. Politics of instinct over intellect are also explored. Candidates display a commitment to controversy as support for counter subversive activities; moral passions are inflamed and threats are increased. There is an emerging role of new media in Wallace’s era (television) and Trump’s era (social media) in interpreting culture, society and politics. “Performance” or role-playing by the candidate becomes paramount in an era of low-information voters who quickly categorize candidates and ignore intricacies of issues and policies. Campaign rallies form a central aspect of the spectacle and provide a choreographed stage for the candidate’s performance. The author examines the role of the media as a co-conspirator in keeping the “show” or “spectacle” alive to maintain readers/audience.

Abstract:
The chapter discusses the most characteristic aspect of Johnny Hodges’ music: the tone he achieved on his instrument. In this respect, he was a throwback to the earliest days of jazz in New Orleans, when a musician was judged not primarily on the basis of speed or melodic invention but on the quality of the sound he produced. Citations to the views of New Orleans precursors--particularly Hodges’s model, Sidney Bechet—are provided in support of this view, which has fallen into disuse as jazz has developed from a music for communal dance and social occasions (parades, funerals, and picnics) to a music experienced primarily with the intellect, sitting down. Techniques that came to characterize Hodges’s style, primarily glissando and portamento are described; before Hodges, glissando had been thought to be not just impossible but also improper, in bad taste.

Abstract:
Abstract In the end, it was Rousseau’s concept of the moral sex that came to set the terms for the late-Enlightenment querelle des femmes. Almost all texts on woman written in Rousseau’s wake testify to the broad dissemination of Emile and La Nouvelle Héloïse in the second half of the eighteenth century. The striking effect this image of woman had cannot be explained solely by social historical arguments, let alone reduced to a patriarchal power game. Rather, Rousseau’s model succeeded in responding to particular deficiencies of the nascent new society. In a world increasingly organized along utilitarian principles, the persistence of compassion became more problematic. It is precisely this aspect that contemporary “popular” texts on the woman question took up. Discussions of woman’s sensibility replaced the rationalist debates about her intellect. I would like to begin in this context by returning to Thomas, whose Essai is typical of the reception of Rousseau’s image of woman by an “enlightened” public.

The new didactics of cognitivist type, the didactics of learning specific intellect capabilities or that based on the multiple intelligence theory represent large leaps in the field of teaching. The new content of the learning can no longer be developed within the limits of the traditional learning practice, producing the transformation of the teachers in the designing curriculum specialists. The work presents aspects regarding the active and interactive learning, the interactive teaching-learning methods and their importance in the study of environmental protection disciplines. The modern didactics places the student at the center of the learning process, participating to the own training, and the teacher has the role of design, organize, lead and correct the work itself, in order to develop the intelligence and the learning of the appropiate conduct. The modern methods: the lecture, the teaching demonstration, the problem-solving, the experiment, the brainstorming, the double entry journal, the SINELG, the gallery tour, the cube, the snowball, the mosaic, are considered relevant in making the education reform, to place the student at the center of the learning process. For each method are presented examples in the study of the environmental disciplines.
