Giroud, Jeanette. "Secondary arts teachers' perceptions of integrated arts." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1997. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1726.

Full text
Abstract:
During the 1980s, research in the arts by Project Zero and Arts Propel revealed that in American schooling the areas of artistic intelligence and artistic education had been neglected. Gardner (1989) proposed a theory of multiple intelligences, suggesting that in addition to the linguistic and logical-mathematical forms, there are a number of distinct forms of intelligence that each individual may possess in varying degrees. The concept of multiple intelligences as opposed to "talent" in an art form offers the opportunity to view arts education in a new light. The original purpose of Arts Propel was to assess artistic potential in the same way that IQ or SAT instruments are designed to test scholastic potential. What began as an assessment endeavour, became a curricular undertaking and as a result, a number of educational institutions developed integrated arts approaches to arts learning, claiming that where the arts were integrated within the curriculum, higher achievement was recorded. The National Curriculum's statement on The Arts for Australian Schools (1993) included the five arts forms of dance, drama, media, music and visual arts as "Arts" components and justified this stance by clearly stating that the common statements and profiles accommodated a wide range of approaches. However, the strands of arts experience and learning - Creating, Making and Presenting, Arts Criticism and Aesthetics, and Past and Present Contexts - have the potential to provide a common framework for integration of the various forms. During the course of this research the strands have already been subject to change and are now known as Expressing, Responding and Reflecting. During the trialling phase of The Arts' Student Outcome Statements, divisions between the arts forms became apparent. Some of the issues included: attempts by arts teachers to maintain the status quo, strong boundaries between the arts, unequal representation of arts forms in schools and application of Student Outcome Statements Strands to all the arts forms. At the commencement of this research the divisions between the arts forms remained as strong as ever, yet a truly integrative approach has the potential to strengthen the place of arts in schools. This research documented ten secondary arts teachers' perceptions of integrated arts. The teachers all taught in government schools and each art form was represented by two teachers. The purpose of the research was to record arts teachers' perceptions of integrated arts at a time of rapid curriculum change. Qualitative methodology using the instrument of semi-structured scheduled interviews was the data gathering process. The interviews were audio-taped and once the data was compiled it was sent to the participants for their approval. This study found that arts teachers' perceptions of integrated arts were, on the whole, positive. Most teachers believed that an integrated arts approach would give students a deeper understanding of the arts and promote bonding between arts teachers. Teachers felt that the combination of the five arts forms into one learning area (The Arts), provided long overdue recognition of the arts as a significant learning area. Other perceived benefits included the building of strength and support, and the overcoming of isolation that characterised the arts in schools in the past. It is recommended, as a result of this study, that where possible, the physical location of the arts departments in schools should be considered during the planning stage so that arts areas are not isolated. It is also recommended that media and dance should adopt the changes, so that The Arts area of learning will not be fragmented. This can be achieved through document support which will show dance and media teachers how they can work effectively within an Arts framework. Integrated Arts programs, such as those offered by some of the schools in this study, will provide strong guidelines for future arts consolidation and enrichment in schools.

Pang, Ying-Feng. "Integrated Thermal Design and Optimization Study for Active Integrated Power Electronic Modules (IPEMs)." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34965.

Full text
Abstract:
Thermal management is one of many critical tasks in the design of power electronic systems. It has become increasingly important as a result of the introduction of high power density and integrated modules. It has also been realized that higher temperatures do affect reliability due to a variety of physical failure mechanisms that involve thermal stresses and material degradation. Therefore, it is important to consider temperature as design parameter in developing power electronic modules. The NSF Center for Power Electronics System (CPES) at Virginia Tech previously developed a first generation (Gen-I) active Integrated Power Electronics Module (IPEM). This module represents CPES's approach to design a standard power electronic module with low labor and material costs and improved reliability compared to industrial Intelligent Power Modules (IPM). A preliminary Generation II (Gen-II.A) active IPEM was built using embedded power technology, which removes the wire bonds from the Gen-I IPEM. In this module, the three primary heat-generating devices are placed on a direct bonded copper substrate in a multi-chip module format. The overall goal of this research effort was to optimize the thermal performance of this Gen-II.A IPEM. To achieve this goal, a detailed three-dimensional active IPEM was modeled using the thermal-fluid analysis program ESC in I-DEAS to study the thermal performance of the Gen-II.A IPEM. Several design variables including the ceramic material, the ceramic thickness, and the thickness of the heat spreader were modeled to optimize IPEM geometric design and to improve the thermal performance while reducing the footprint. Input variables such as power loss and interface material thicknesses were studied in a sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. Other design constraints such as electrical design and packaging technology were also considered in the thermal optimization of the design. A new active IPEM design named Gen-II.C was achieved with reduced-size and improved thermal and electrical performance. The success of the new design will enable the replacement of discrete components in a front-end DC/DC converter by this standard module with the best thermal and electrical performance. Future improvements can be achieved by replacing the current silicon chip with a higher thermal-conductivity material, such as silicon carbide, as the power density increases, and by, exploring other possible cooling techniques.

Engel-Hills, Penelope Claire. "An integrated learning curriculum for radiography in South Africa." Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/1569.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DTech (Radiography))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2005.
The most significant changes and challenges to radiography in South Africa are rapid technological changes in the fields of imaging and radiation oncology, the changing status of radiographers as members of the multi-disciplinary health care team and the socioeconomic impact of post-apartheid ideology, policy and legislation with regard to both higher education and health provision. This altered landscape in which academic and clinical work is accomplished has impacted on radiography education. Curricula must change in order to equip graduates to work effectively in the modern workplace and the Integrated Learning Curriculum (ILC) is one such curriculum response. The traditional radiography curriculum of connecting subject-based theory education with interspersed clinical experience where there is reliance on students connecting or applying the subject content taught in the classroom to clinical practice was challenged. The ILC planned to enhance the integration of teaching, learning and assessment in the academy and workplace in a transforming South Africa. This study took advantage of the opportunity to capture data and learning from this curriculum renewal. The research was guided by the questions: I) What is the nature of radiographic knowledge? 2) What curricular options would facilitate radiographic knowledge? 3) What would enable or constrain successful curriculum implementation? 4) Is the ILC an appropriate curriculum for Radiography? This study facilitated a 'layered' understanding of integration and integrated curriculum through exploration of the concept 'integration'. This was achieved through; a national survey that investigated opinion on the status of radiography education in South Africa in 2003; interpretation of the context within which the ILC was located; a search of relevant literature; and a case study that gathered data over a three-year period. Findings support the notion that the workplace is a key influence on higher education curricula and that an integrated learning curriculum suits radiography.

Lalande, Severine. "Characterization of Thin-Bedded Reservoir in the Gulf of Mexico: An Integrated Approach." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/65.

Full text
Abstract:
An important fraction of the reservoirs in the Outer Continental Shelf of the Gulf of Mexico is comprised of thin-bedded deposits from channel-levee systems. These reservoirs are particularly difficult to describe. Not only is their architecture complex but the quality of the reservoir is determined by connection and length of beds below the resolution of usual reflection data. Improved characterization is needed to improve development and production of these reservoirs. This study presents an integrated approach to build a geologically consistent reservoir model, based on the 8 sand reservoir in Northern Green Canyon block 18. The underlying idea of the construction of this model is that reservoir quality is influenced more by the internal architecture than by the statistical values of petrophysical parameters. Seismic interpretation and attribute extraction provided the reservoir geometry and stratigraphy. The structural framework and the limits of the reservoir have been determined, showing the preeminent role of salt and faults in the constitution of this reservoir. Seismic attributes are calibrated to extract areal information on reservoir architecture. Gross thickness and net thickness maps have been estimated using geostatistical methods. Lateral variations in the quality of the 8 sand and the definition zones with different average properties were inferred from geostatistical results. Lithofacies characterization from core showed that 3 facies could be used to describe the internal variability. The fine-scale heterogeneity is described in each zone from vertical facies distribution determined from wells. A truncated Gaussian sequential simulation was performed to reflect both the regional trend and the internal variability on a 150*150*1 ft grid. The major contribution of this work is to show the efficiency of this approach to describe complex reservoirs where the impact of internal variability is a major control of flow efficiency. This is especially valuable when the well information is scarce or not uniformly distributed. This model will be used for flow simulation and sensitivity analysis to improve the field description.

Gerber, Karin. "Optimising the work integrated learning of student nurses." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/7721.

Full text
Abstract:
According to the Council on Higher Education (CHE, 2011:78) the term Work Integrated Learning (WIL) refers to an educational approach that aligns academic and workplace practices for the mutual benefit of students and workplaces. The CHE (2011:4) further describes WIL as an approach to career-focussed education that includes classroom-based and workplace-based forms of learning that are appropriate for the professional qualifications. WIL forms part of many training programmes for professions across the globe and is considered an important aspect of preparing the trainee or student to integrate theoretical learning into the clinical environment in which he or she will be building his or her career. WIL is considered crucial for the development of professional attributes and competencies needed to perform duties within the chosen profession once the trainee is qualified. Health care professions across the world employ WIL in clinical areas as an integral part of their curricula and nursing specifically is one of the health care professions that utilise a large component of WIL for clinical development of the student nurses. In South Africa, student nurses are currently placed in a variety of clinical settings in order to obtain the required and regulated clinical experience that work integrated learning should offer them. However, anecdotal evidence indicated that student nurses from the various Nursing Education Institutions in Nelson Mandela Bay experienced difficulty in finding adequate opportunities to develop their newly acquired skills when in the clinical areas and reported great difficulties in achieving their WIL outcomes. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the student nurses’ experiences of work integrated learning in various clinical areas in the Nelson Mandela Bay. This study followed a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual design with two phases. Thirty-five student nurses in their third and fourth-year were purposely sampled. In phase one data was collected using two steps, where the first step comprised using naïve sketches. During the second step interviews were done by means of focus groups using semi-structured questions and responsive interviewing. Data was transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically using Tesch’s method of analysis. In phase two recommendations for nurse educators to optimise WIL were formulated. The following three themes and related sub-themes emerged from the analysis: 1) Student nurses experienced a multitude of challenges in the clinical placement areas (CPA) and at the nursing education institution (NEI) that negatively impact on their morale and hinder WIL, namely lack of resources, unsupportive learning environments, a lack of belonging and workplace violence. 2) Positive experiences resulted in motivated and enthusiastic students, namely being inspired by role models, enhanced learning when support was offered and personal growth. 3) Students offered recommendations for enabling their WIL, namely adequate mentoring and clinical support, adequate financial support related to WIL and adjusting the nursing programmes to better incorporate the students’ needs. Relevant literature and recommendations offered by the student nurses were used to formulate recommendations with action steps for nurse educators to optimise work integrated learning of student nurses.

Williams, Roby S. "Fly reel, a study in integrated system design." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31277.

Full text
Abstract:
While enjoying a passion for outdoor related sports, I had taken an interest in the equipment I used while hunting and fishing. I was fascinated by the precision of the instruments I used to optimize my time spent in the field. This curiosity led to some preliminary designs to further enhance my outings. The joy I received from these projects led me to pursue industrial design as a profession. As a student, I chose to design a product that related to the fishing industry. I selected to design a fly reel for its links to other fishing reels and manâ s interaction with water. This required a critical analysis of current fly reels and how to enhance its current design. To accomplish this I modified select mechanical elements of the reel. This involved, in some instances, new materials and incorporating different processes to achieve my goal. The innovations I incorporated allowed the reel to be used while fishing for a wider spectrum of fish than the typical fly reel. This flexibility reduces the need to purchase additional reels to pursue different size fish. This has the potential to provide a savings to the consumer and encourage them to fish for a species of fish they would otherwise neglect. In addition to my primary objective, I want to contribute a product that will be an asset to the fishing industry with attention to aesthetics, affordability and ease of use.

Barnes, Eleanor H. "Linking Integrated Services With Schools: a Case Study." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30356.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1989, a large suburban school district and a cluster of public service agencies initiated a pilot program to provide a multi-agency staffing to develop action plans for identified students. The purpose of this study was to describe the process that was involved in the establishment of this school-linked, integrated program. The research questions that guided data collection in this study were: (1) what was the impetus for initiating this interagency innovation and what resources were required? (2) who were the key players, how were they determined, and in what ways did they plan together to establish and implement this school-linked program? (3) in what ways was the initiation of the pilot program supported or impeded? (4) what is the status of the pilot program today? The case study approach, using qualitative methods of data collection, was used in order to answer these questions of process and understanding. Before data collection began, permission was obtained from the study school district to proceed. Interviews were conducted with selected individuals who participated in the planning or implementation of the program. Documents generated at the time of its establishment were also reviewed. Analysis involved the organization of data into coded categories followed by a search for themes and patterns to provide a detailed and rich description of the process. The findings of the study are presented chronologically within two phases, planning and implementation, with themes that emerged discussed within this framework. The results of this study add additional information to the body of research that describes the linking process, from vision to implementation, that occurs when a school district and community agencies work together to address children's needs. Conclusions from the study are presented as well as implications for future endeavors and recommendations for further research.

Dominguez, Christian. "Integrated hydrogeological study of San Cristobal Island (Galapagos)." Thesis, Paris 6, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA066225/document.

Abstract:
The understanding of the hydrogeological functioning in regions such as San Cristobal Island (Galapagos), where water is limited, is fundamental for a suitable management of its resources. This work is the first study of this type on high-level aquifers in San Cristobal using a multi-disciplinary approach, based in the implementation of an experimental site and modeling strategies. For this purpose, a hydrological network was installed in Cerro Gato (CG) and surrounding watersheds. Inputs to the watershed are estimated using the joint modeling of a canopy and soil water transfer. Recharge rates are mainly affected by altitude in mid-elevation watersheds, whereas land cover is the main controlling factor at high-elevation watersheds because of the additional input of fog interception in forests. A hydrological analysis shows that losses from the high-elevation basins become groundwater inputs in the mid-elevation basins, while others have inputs from watersheds at the same altitude, such as CG. The detailed geometry of its hydrogeological watershed is obtained from the dataset of a high resolution AEM SkyTEM survey, which confirms the assumption that its hydrogeological watershed is bigger than its hydrological one. Results from these approaches allow proposing a hydrogeological conceptual model for the springs of CG, where the groundwater flow of springs is fed by a perched aquifer suspended by a low permeability thin layer. This model is tested with numerical simulations, which confirm the plausibility of the existence of a perched aquifer. This thesis provides scientific basis for an effective water management strategy

Martinod, Aurelie Charlotte. "An integrated study of CaCO3 formation and inhibition." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2008. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4411/.

Full text
Abstract:
The management of mineral scale is a challenge in many industrial fields and environmental issues relating to eutrophication are leading industry to develop environmentally-friendly solutions to scale control. The determination of the strategy of inhibition is a real challenge as many factors influence the formation of calcium carbonate formation and affect the performance of scale inhibitors. The processes of CaC03 formation on a surface have been studied. The mechanisms of inhibition of three green (Carboxymethyl Inulin, CMI, Polymaleic acid, PMA and Polyaspartic acid, PA) and one conventional (Polyphosphinocarboxylic acid, PPCA) scale inhibitors of calcium carbonate nucleation and growth have been investigated. The interactions between the chemicals and the surface have been studied by chronoamperometry. The use of surface analysis enabled these interactions to be characterised. The in-situ electrochemical flow cell permitted the characterisation of the crystals formed (size, number and surface coverage of the electrode) and the affinity of the chemicals to inhibit the nucleation and/or the growth to be determined. Important information on the different effects of scale inhibitors on CaC03 polymorphs has been found by use of Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction (SXRD) as an in-situ method for crystal characterisation. The inhibitors partly inhibit the deposition of CaC03 by forming a film on the deposition surface. The interactions between the inhibitors and the metal surface occur via the cations Ca2+ and/or Mg2+. The adsorption of the chemicals on the crystals ofCaC03 has been investigated and it appears that the PPCA, PMA and PA act by blocking the growth sites of the crystals. Each inhibitor exhibits an affinity to the surface of deposition and with the CaC03 crystals but to a different extent resulting in different inhibition efficiencies. The PPCA affected greatly the deposition of CaC03 and PA and PMA exhibited similar effects. Nevertheless the PA is more efficient when it is present during the nucleation step or early crystallisation whereas PMA acts more during the growth process. The SXRD permitted three steps of growth to be detected in the non-inhibited case and PMA, PA, CMI act by reducing the growth of the different planes whereas the PPCA totally inhibited two main crystal planes (the aragonite (032) and the vaterite (300» and an acceleration of the growth of the calcite C(006)) and of the aragonite A( Ill) was observed.

Kerr, Gayle. "Consistency and integrated marketing communication : an exploratory study." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1997. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/36301/1/36301_Kerr_1997.pdf.

Abstract:
This study explores the role of consistency in IMC and ways in which it can be measured. A contribution to the emerging area of IMC is made by drawing on the experiences of marketing communication practitioners in relation to their perceptions of consistency in the practice of IMC. The initial exploratory research in the form of focus groups was expanded upon through a series of in-depth interviews which elaborated on attitudes towards consistency, measurement and IMC. The literature review in Chapter 2 summarises key data from the fields of advertising, public relations, direct response, sales promotion, corporate identity, marketing, auditing and IMC. Chapter 3 describes the multimethod research design of the study, in which focus groups generated many new ideas which were explored in greater detail through in-depth interviews. Key outcomes of the research are reported in Chapter 4. The final chapter considers the implications of this research for the theory and practice of IMC and suggestions for future research. The main findings suggest that consistency is an important but little understood area of IMC. In this study, consistency is defined and factors promoting consistency, as well as barriers to consistency in IMC are identified. From this, the three keys to consistency - corporate identity, strategy and execution - emerge. The study explores consistency in relation to Duncan's IMC Message Typology and suggests where consistency can be controlled or influenced in planned, inferred, maintenance and unplanned messages. As a result, strategies for controlling and influencing consistency are developed. Consistency was seen by practitioners as difficult to measure due a lack of appropriate tools and an inability to see visible results or relate it to a dollar value. In addition, it was felt that management was not demanding its measurement. A need was identified for a measurement tool for the internal guardian of the brand to evaluate consistency in IMC. The study concludes by proposing a 'Consistency Check' devised from the study results, as an appropriate measure to evaluate consistency in IMC.

Abstract:
When planning to implement a marketing tool such as Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) into ones company, marketers need to know what IMC means or is perceived to be in their environment. The definition of IMC is shown in the background chapter of this study and more definitions are stated in the theoretical frame chapter as well. Months of research lead to the conduction of a study, that is to test the perception of IMC in the Swedish market by sampling and sending questionnaires to Swedish marketers. Five Hypotheses were formed to test if each factor has a positive or negative relation with IMC. A questionnaire was formulated that tested all of the five main success factors (customer focus, targeted communication, customer-brand relationship, synergy and communication channels) in relation to IMC and how the Swedish marketers perceived each one of the factor’s connection to IMC. The marketers were chosen due to the fact that they would know most about IMC since it’s within the field of marketing.  It was found that Swedish marketers support 2 out of the 5 hypotheses. This means that the results showed that Swedish marketers perceive that there is a positive relationship between both channels of communication and IMC, and customer brand relationship and IMC, while targeted communication, customer focus and synergy were denied to be as positively related to IMC. This study would be of great help to a Swedish company trying to implement IMC because it gives directions to the Swedish perception of it, thereby making it more clear to know exactly what they are implementing, which help them find out in what way they should implement IMC, in order to avoid failures that could be very expensive.

Wang, Yuheng. "Study on integrated bioseparation technologies for mass taxane production." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/26800.

Full text
Abstract:
In this work, the principles of chemical engineering, plant biology, and phytochemistry were successfully applied to the separation of bioactive compounds from plant materials, taking the taxane extraction and purification as an example. A new model, the Solute Distribution Model, was proposed and used to guide the experimental work. Based on the model, two approaches, the Dual-Solvent Extraction approach and the ExtractionAdsorption approach, were developed in order to enhance both selectivity and recovery rate in bioseparation. Separation from Taxus Canadensis of all valuable products, including paclitaxel, 9-DHB III, 10-DAB III, Baccatin III, and other possible by-products, was studied experimentally. Dynamic Pressurized Liquid Extraction, a new extraction technique in the area of natural product mass production, was applied, along with conventional solvent extraction means. Based on the results of this work, the Solute Distribution Model, the Dual-Solvent Extraction approach and the Extraction-Adsorption approach were found to be effective tools for the development of cost-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies in large-scale production of valuable products from plant materials. One novel taxane extraction and purification process, integrated as DPLE-SPE-Chromatography, was invented and proofed. Certain interesting experimental phenomena, particular to the system examined, were observed and explained with fundamental principles. Compared to the reported results of previous studies, the newly developed process could potentially offer higher product yields, milder operating conditions, and lower negative environmental impacts and, therefore, better economics. With the changing economic environment and the popularity of insurance, people not only earn interest by saving money in banks but also purchase insurance for additional coverage. On one hand, Central Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) is responsible for providing the guarantee of bank deposits. One the other hand, Taiwan Insurance Guaranty Fund (TIGF) is responsible for protecting the rights and interests of the insured. CDIC and TIGF are two independent systems. However, a system which combines all financial schemes together has emerged internationally in recent years. It is known as "Integrated Protection Schemes" that Taiwan should consider adopting. In view of this, this dissertation firstly introduces the Integrated Protection Schemes in Korea, United Kingdom, and Malaysia. The introduction includes the background of its origin and current status, coverage range and limits, the structure of funds and premium rate, system of risk control and supervision. These various aspects as practiced in these three countries are in turn compared and discussed. After that, relevant recommendations are provided as references for future implementation of Integrated Deposit Insurance System in Taiwan.

The paper is put emphasized on the study of reservoir integrated dredging. At first, we evaluate the depth and velocity of every section in reservoir. Then the suspended load concentration convective-diffusion equation and the bed load continue equation are used to calculate the bed changes of reservoir as well as to calculate dredging efficiency. At last evaluate the integrated dredging strategy by the linear programming. Taking the A-GONG-DIAN reservoir for example, it has been the study of reservoir integrated dredging strategy. From the dredging strategy, as a result, we know that the water that has been consumed by hydraulic flushing is higher than mechanical excavation and dredger dredging. Because the mechanical excavation excavates the sediment deposits that have exposed from the reservoir, it does not consume water. Dredging efficiency of dredger is related with the situation of the sediment deposits in the reservoir, often form 5 to 10%, and flushing and empty is 0.393%, as to drawdown flushing is about 4 to 8% for it is related to the flood and the water level of reservoir. From the result of the linear programming, we know that if we take the water consumption as the objective function, the dredger and the mechanical excavation would be the best choice.

The studies of the thesis is mainly focused on the integrated various antennas in the handset in order to satisfy consumers on-demand. Internal integrated antennas for the specific handset, 110×52.8×8mm3, are investigated. First, microstrip-line-fed folded monopole antennas are located on the top of handset. It can be seen that the monopole antennas are excited by multiple current path for GSM/DCS/PCS/IMT-2000 operation. Second, two coaxial-fed PIFA antennas are face to face put on the handset ground plate edge for WLAN and Bluetooth operations, respectively. Good isolated results for GSM/DCS/PCS/IMT-2000, WLAN and Bluetooth operations can be easily achieved. Finally, we add a novel circularly polarized antenna occupied on the back of battery for GPS operation.

The successful implementation of JIT production in today’s supply chain environment requires a new spirit of cooperation between the buyer and the vendor. Companies are using JIT purchasing to gain and maintain a competitive advantage. The benefits of JIT purchasing include small lot sizes, frequent deliveries, consistent high quality, decrease in inventory levels, lower setup cost and ordering cost, and close supplier ties. An integrated inventory model with such a consideration is based on the total cost optimization under a common stock policy and business formula. However, the supposition of known annual demand in most related literature may not be realistic. This paper proposes the inclusion of fuzzy annual demand and/or the production rate, and then employs the signed distance, a ranking method for fuzzy numbers, to find the estimate of the common total cost in the fuzzy sense, and subsequently derives the corresponding optimal buyer’s quantity and the integer number of lots in which the items are delivered from the vendor to the purchaser. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the results of proposed models.

To integrate all the optical devices in a single chip is the target pursued by those who work in the field of integrated optics. Based on the ideal, four types of novel integrated-optics devices, including waveguide bend, 1X3 equal-power divider, mode extinction modulator, and mode-profile transformer, are proposed in the thesis. Waveguide bend or 1X3 equal-power divider can be designed with a larger bend or branching angle yet with low insertion loss such that the device area on the chip is reduced and the packing density is increased. For mode extinction modulator or mode-profile transformer, only a very short device length is required to modulate linearly the optical signal or transform the optical field profile. In comparison to the previous work, a great improvement of the device performance is achieved. For the proposed waveguide bend, not only the transmitted power in the theoretical and experimental results is greatly enhanced but also the bend angle can be extended to as high as 10 degree, which makes the application of wide-angle waveguide bend possible. Because of not requiring extra regions of indices different from those of waveguide and substrate, the proposed equal-power divider can be easily fabricated. Besides, it concurrently has the advantages of low insertion loss, large branching angle, and easy fabrication. By the ridge structure in the electrode region, the proposed mode-extinction modulator has a larger linear operation range. In order to reduce the waveguide-fiber coupling loss, the mode-profile transformer designed based on mode interference is proposed to transform the field profile in the Ti-diffused waveguide in a short device length. According to device characteristics, different methods are used in the simulation. To simulate the propagation of the optical field, paraxial and wide-angle semi-vectorial beam propagation methods are used. The simulation boundary is handled by modified Higdon’s absorbing boundary condition or transparent boundary condition. The finite element method is used for electrode analysis. The reasons why specific method is used in the individual device simulation are given in the text.

Relationship quality is a new concept of relationship marketing, which could emphasize that when an organization wants to build or develop a success relationship with its customers, it must highlight in quality. The literatures of relationship quality almost focus on business to business (B2B) market before. However, fewer scholars study relationship quality in business to consumer (B2C) market. In additional, many researchers think relationship quality is a high-order construction, and investigate it how to affect relationship outcome. They don’t explore how and what exogenous variables to affect relationship quality context. Therefore, constructing an integrated relationship quality model in B2C market is a critical issue. Through the literatures review, there are three important relationship driving factors (exogenous variables)- the expertise of first line service person, communication quality, and affective conflict; three relationship quality contexts(endogenous variables)- trust, satisfaction and affective committee; a relationship outcome variable- loyalty. In this research, we will make clear of these relationship driving factors how to influence relationship quality, as well as relationship quality how to affect customer loyalty in the future. In this research, we analysis two different service companies, Keting Howrad Hotel(墾丁福華渡假飯店) and National Museum of Marine Biology Aquarium(國立海洋生物博物館). Through convenient sampling, there are 364 useful samples in Keting Howrad Hotel and 362 useful samples in National Museum of Marine Biology Aquarium. After analysis these data using LISREL method, there are three significant results: 1. All paths in this integrated relationship quality model are significant. It this testified that this integrated relationship quality model has general validity. 2. All relationship driving factors could explain three relationship quality context(R2=0.41). Especially, the first line service person’s expertise is strongest key factor. 3. Relationship quality is able to explain relationship outcome(R2=0.63). In particular, there is a strongest relation between emotion commitment and loyalty. Besides, emotion commitment is a key mediator between trust, satisfaction and loyalty.

Currently strawberries are harvested manually by farmers. It is very labor-intensive and time-consuming. Therefore, automatic harvesting strawberries by machines will be the new trend of the future. The purpose of the study is to develop a strawberry picking robot which consists of multi-axis robotic arm, designed cutting and holding gripper and machine vision system. Two digital cameras were setup to acquire images from strawberry pots. Strawberry fruits were segmented from the background by the difference of the image color components. The HSL color model was used to define the light red, middle red and deep red colors of the fruit surface. The fruit maturity was then predicted by the well-trained ANFIS based on the area proportions of the light red, middle red, deep red and white-green colors. The harvesting location of the peduncle can be found above the fruits by pattern matching method. The distance of the strawberry peduncle relative to the cameras was determined by stereo vison method. The robot arm moved the gripper to cut off the peduncle and held the fruit to tray. After all matured fruits of the current pot harvested, the conveyor carried the next pot to the target location for next harvesting process. A strawberry picking robot is successfully developed to automatically find the matured fruits and harvest them by the robotic arm. The experiment result showed that the successful rate for maturity classification using ANFIS method is about 92.5%.The maximum error of the depth, horizontal and vertical positions estimated by the stereo vision is 3mm, 2mm and 2.4mm. The successful rate for finding the harvest location of the peduncle is about 93.2%. It can successfully harvest 87.5% of the fruits from the strawberry pot. The average time for the system to harvest a strawberry is about 9.1 second.

The purpose of this thesis is to implement active inductor integrated circuits with a very high quality value and a tunable inductance. The active inductor can be extensively used in the application basic modules of front-end transceiver in wireless communication system, such as LNA (Low Noise Amplifier), VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) … etc. Because of the smaller area, the higher quality factor and the tunable inductance, active inductor exhibits charming characteristics that spiral inductor can’t exceed. The simulation results in the thesis show that a simple cascode active inductor can work at 5.7 GHz with 9.45 mW power consumption. It can deliver a maximum equivalent inductance of 24 nH with a maximum quality-factor of 40. Besides, the effective inductance and quality-factor can be tuned by controlling the bias current. Using the above active inductor, a common-source low noise amplifier with an active inductor load is developed. The amplifier operates at 5.7 GHz with 11.1dB power gain, -15 dBm , and 4.1dB noise figure in simulation.

The transcriptome contains complete information of all RNAs that are transcribed by the genome at specific developmental stages and under specific physiological or pathological conditions in a particular tissue or cell type. Transcriptomics is a large-scale study of RNA molecules using high-throughput techniques. The process of examining the composition and abundance of transcriptomes in cells by high-throughput techniques is transcriptome profiling. It can be used to identify the expression patterns to classify cellular states or to identify genes with specific expression patterns. DNA microarray analysis and RNA Sequencing (RNA-Seq), a tool of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, have been widely utilized for transcriptome profiling. In this dissertation, we collected, analyzed, and integrated large-scale datasets of transcriptome profiling to study cancer precision medicine, non-invasion diagnosis of disease, plant stress, and crop yield. The architecture of this dissertation is divided into three major components. The first component is using transcriptome profiling to study cancer characteristics and precision medicine. After collecting and analyzing large-scale cancer RNA-Seq data, we identified a large number of differentially expressed transcripts between different cancer stages or between normal tissues and cancers, which resulted in a comprehensive cancer RNA-Seq database. Additionally, we integrated large-scale cancer expression profiles and drug treatment profiles to develop a novel precision medicine method. The second component is using transcriptome profiling to study the non-invasion diagnosis of disease. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) in the blood have been found to be a potential biomarker for non-invasive diagnostics. Although there have been several studies attempting to generate circulating miRNA database, they have not yet integrate the large-scale circulating miRNAs profiles and predict the potential biomarkers using machine learning methods. In this study, we collected and analyzed large-scale DNA microarray analysis of miRNAs and small RNA-Seq data, combined with biological pathways and feature selection methods to construct a circulating miRNA-expression database. The third component is utilizing transcriptome profiling to study the application of transcriptomics in plant stress and crop yield. We collected, processed, analyzed and visualized large-scale publically available plant stress RNA-seq data to construct a plant stress RNA-Seq database. In addition, we also used small RNA-Seq to investigate miRNAs of 129 Taiwanese rice cultivars and examine eight yield-related traits of these rice cultivars. In combination with feature selection and machine learning methods, we have identified certain miRNAs that are closely related to the panicle number traits in rice cultivars. This study is a framework to provide integrated and comprehensive knowledge for bioinformatics and transcriptome profiling. The results of this study in cancer research provide a resource for research on cancer mechanisms and treatments by biological and medical researchers. The Study on circulating miRNAs will facilitate potential non-invasive biomarkers discovery for routine clinical examinations. The research findings on plant stress and yield may help to solve the food crisis caused by global climate change. Finally, we constructed three large databases, which may contribute to academic interconnection, knowledge base establishment, and mutual validation.

Abstract:
The integrated method proposed and worked out consisted of integration of vocal and voice-speech teaching techniques as well as integration of the empirical and mechanical methods of teaching. Balance and co-ordination between external and intra-pharyngeal articulation were considered as a framework for integration of various methods of teaching. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), along with spectral analysis, was used to demonstrate the work of intrapharyngeal muscles while singing and to assess the quality of vocalization. 54 MRI expositions were generated for the set of vowels, pitches and modes, of which over 400 MRI images were synthesized and measured. When switching from amateur to professional way of singing, radical transformations of size, shape and to some extent, changes in the surface properties (density, porosity) of muscular tissue of intra-pharyngeal cavities were observed. New acquired MR images clearly showed that the axial section of the back cavity appears indeed much larger in the professional mode than in the amateur mode. Statistical analysis showed that this difference is statistically significant. It is shown that the work on muscles development and use of mental images/imagination must progress in close collaboration. The strategy for the gradual mastering technique of the opening of the vocal tract was suggested, and developed. A new approach was developed to be applied for students to get stable repeatability when they work with mental images. Obtained MR images were used as a part of visualization method during experimental work with students. MR images helped students to create proper mental images. The theory of tangible images was suggested and then successfully applied in the form of experimental work with students. Experimental work with students of the ethnic group Maori was conducted. This experimental work with Maori students demonstrated that the integrated method of teaching helped to overcome some physiological and psychological specific problems which require special techniques of training. Case studies were carried out to assess individual and students' group perceptions, along with interview techniques and a survey questionnaire. The results of the survey are presented graphically, and statistical processing of the data was performed. The results of the survey are interpreted and discussed.

This study attempts to establish an economics mathematics model of asymmetric vertical-integrated model to discuss product differentiated strategy of vertical-integrated firms and process innovation strategy of non-vertical-integrated firms. Discuss how market expansion and consumer preferences change affect the firms. We extend the model of Buehler & Schmutzler(2008) and Garella & Lambertini (2012). The main results of the study are follows: (1) The production of vertical-integrated firms will more than non-vertical-integrated firms.(2) When market expansion, both firms will increase the production. And amount of production of vertical-integrated firms will more than non-vertical-integrated firms. (3)When consumers' preferences for differentiated products increase, firms will product more differentiated product and produce less non-hedonic product.(4)When both market expansion and consumers' preferences for differentiated products increase, it beneficial to the firm adopt product differentiated strategy ,and the firm will devote more effort to product differentiation. And it unfavorable to the firm adopt process innovation (profits decrease) ,and the firm will reduce the process innovation.

Abstract:
Athletes are embedded within an environment that can be conceptualized as comprising multiple nested hierarchal levels that span increasingly larger contexts—the most salient being the individual level, the club level, and the community level. Viewing the field of sport psychology broadly, it is apparent that the majority of research has been conducted at lower levels, such as athletes’ developmental trajectories (Côté, Baker, & Abernethy, 2003) and peer interactions (Smith, 2003). While sport scientists have begun to study higher levels such as successful sport programs (Martindale, Collins, & Abraham, 2007; Vallee & Bloom, 2005) and successful clubs (Henriksen, Stambulova, & Roessler, 2010a, 2010b) there is a lack of research at the community level. The purpose of this project was to conduct an integrated case study to systematically gather rich information via diverse sources to effectively understand how one successful sporting community develops athletic talent. Lockeport, Nova Scotia—a relatively small, rural, maritime community with a population of approximately 650 residents—was chosen based on athletic success. Twenty-two community residents, including athletes, parents, coaches, a grandparent, the recreation coordinator, and the mayor, were interviewed with the aim to understand how community level factors may have influenced athletic development within a recent ten year span (2000-2009). Interviews were qualitatively analyzed using the method of content analysis (Côté, Salmela, Baria, & Russell, 1993). Results supported existing athlete development research and highlighted underexplored areas. Specifically, results fell into one of three themes: (1) athletes’ developmental experiences, (2) the community influences that caused or enabled these developmental experiences, (3) and socio-cultural influences expressed by participants. Regarding developmental experiences, athletes in Lockeport engaged in large amounts of unorganized youth-led sport activities comprised of mixed-age athletes. Athletes also participated in various different organized sports, whose members remained stable throughout development. Regarding community influences, coaches created community sporting events, celebrations, and learning opportunities for youth. This was facilitated by the integration of the local high school and community. Regarding socio-cultural influences, participants expressed a sense of community and shared a collective identity, which may have facilitated the presence of role modeling and pro-community behavior apparent in Lockeport.
