Abstract:
The central theme of this book is ecological and territorialist conversion as a strategic response to the crisis. 'The return to the territory' can be conceived as a valorisation of the common heritage of assets (environmental, urban fabric, landscape, socio-cultural) that mould the identity and lifestyles of every place on the earth. This calls for several issues to be addressed: the fusing of fragmented knowledge into a science of the territory that addresses the problems of socio-territorial and environmental decay in an integrated manner; the definition of new markers and policies of public welfare and happiness, including the landscape as a measure of the quality of peoples' life-worlds; the boosting of tools of local democracy and supportive federalism; the restoration of centrality to the rural world in the production of healthy food, hydro-geological protection measures, ecological reclamation, urban and landscape quality and integrated economies.

Cookey, Peter Emmanuel, Thammarat Koottatep, Walter Thomas Gibson, and Chongrak Polprasert. Integrated Functional Sanitation Value Chain. IWA Publishing, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.2166/9781789061840.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The value chain (VC) system is a key way to address important sanitation technological and institutional gaps in production and service delivery and could constitute a natural platform for development actions and also serve as a market systems approach to improve access to safely-managed sanitation. It has been suggested that sanitation could boost local and national economies and global interconnections with a growing recognition that the private sector can play a bigger role in delivering the Sustainable Development Goal for sanitation, and help businesses understand value-added and product opportunities. This book proposes a pathway towards re-thinking the sanitation value chain (SVC) and suggests that it should cover all processes, activities and products of enterprises/actors in the sanitation supply chain that provide value-added services within each stage. Following the Regenerative Sanitation Principles, this book presents a new perspective to the SVC known as the ‘integrated functional sanitation value chain’ (IFSVC) to address operational functions within sanitation systems in combination with sanitation enterprises, operators and external actors that support the growth of the sanitation economy. The underlying premise of this book is that the IFSVC represents a new perspective that would have major social, environmental and economic implications for local, national, regional and global sanitation service delivery. It is hoped that researchers, business leaders, entrepreneurs, government officials and funders will find this book valuable, and be inspired and enabled to carry sanitation work forward in their own spheres of operation. The book gives several examples of encouraging developments, particularly in technical and business model innovation. It is our hope that this book will provide the stimulus for new learning and its application, particularly through cross-disciplinary and cross-sector partnerships that bring together all the skills and capabilities needed to deliver a fully effective IFSVC. Masson, Marilyn A., David A. Freidel, and Arthur A. Demarest, eds. The Real Business of Ancient Maya Economies. University Press of Florida, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5744/florida/9780813066295.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
A timely synthesis of the latest research and perspectives on ancient Maya economics, this volume illuminates the sophistication and intricacy of economic systems in the Preclassic period, Classic period, and Postclassic period. Contributors from a wide range of disciplines move beyond paradigms of elite control and centralized exchange to focus on individual agency, highlighting production and exchange that took place at all levels of society. Case studies draw on new archaeological evidence from rural households and urban marketplaces to reconstruct the trade networks for tools, ceramics, obsidian, salt, and agricultural goods throughout the empire. They also describe the ways household production integrated with community, regional, and interregional markets. Redirecting the field of ancient Maya economic studies away from simplistic characterizations of the past by fully representing the range of current views on the subject, this volume delves deeply into multiple facets of a complex, interdependent material world.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the nature of fishing economies on the Peruvian coast and in the Titicaca Basin following conquest by the Inca Empire. The pre-Hispanic coast has been regularly described by ethnohistorical sources as a region composed of polities characterized by occupational specialization carried out by various distinct ethnic groups. Each group reportedly specialized in one particular job in one environmental zone, but was integrated into an overall sociopolitical and economic system that allowed for all members of society to have access to any goods they might need. The discussion in this chapter includes the ethnohistorical and archaeological evidence for the presence and organization of fishing economies in order to examine the way the Inca Empire incorporated, administered, and extracted tribute from these groups.

Abstract:
After recurrent crises with severe consequences in the 1990s and early 2000s EDEs have become even more closely integrated into what is now widely recognized as an inherently unstable international financial system. This chapter discusses the factors accelerating global financial integration of EDEs, including monetary policies in major advanced economies, notably the United States. It examines capital inflows and outflows, external balance sheets, the size and composition of gross external assets and liabilities, distinguishing between equity and debt, private and public sectors, local currency and foreign currency debt, bond issues and bank loans, and cross-border and local lending by international banks. It provides data and information on the currency composition of external debt, and non-resident participation in domestic financial markets of emerging economies. These are used to identify the changes in the depth and pattern of integration of emerging economies into the international financial system since the early 1990s.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the economic geography of multinational enterprises (MNE) as one that pushes in the direction of analysis necessarily somewhere between that of a fully territorialized organization and one that transcends the economies of cities and nations. The chapter begins by noting how the history of the multinational enterprise reveals the importance of different economic geographical formations to understanding the international economy. It traces the emergence of modern multinational enterprises in the business networks of colonial trading companies to the hierarchies of modern vertically integrated enterprises to the contemporary return to network or federated organizations. It goes on to emphasize the salience of enclaves as part of the activities of multinational enterprises.

Whitridge, Peter. Classic Thule [Classic Precontact Inuit]. Edited by Max Friesen and Owen Mason. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199766956.013.41.

Full text
Abstract:
During the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries A.D., the ancestors of modern Inuit settled into the Eastern Arctic, building durable regional economies that were integrated through a far-flung trading network. Although cultural and economic diversity increased over time, a hallmark of this period was bowhead whaling, which supplied a significant proportion of the food, fuel, and raw materials consumed in many areas, and shaped social and political life by virtue of the importance of boat-crew-based organization. A western Arctic flavor to this pattern is reflected in the ubiquity of a combined dance house–men’s house and associated shared-mound house group, both of which decline or undergo substantial transformation during later precontact times, after a collapse of whaling coincident with the onset of the Little Ice Age.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses some of the factors leading to the “reinvention” of the Inti Raymi and Machu Picchu almost 500 years after the collapse of Tahuantinsuyu. It also highlights the way in which these two phenomena have been transformed since their reappearance as the result of tourism, globalization and the growth of Incanism. Although both played an important role in the construction of Peruvian’s national identity, their different trajectories reveal competing forces of authentication and reinvention in the national and international arenas. Whereas the resurgence of the Inti Raymi in Cuzco was the product of mestizo intellectuals committed to reinforcing nationalism and local identity, the discovery and rise to prominence of Machu Picchu was the result of broader efforts to integrate the Peruvian highlands into the national and global economies.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how media technologies have constituted and transformed Africa’s multiple public spheres over the past two centuries. Exogenous and often ‘colonial’ in origin, print and electronic media have nonetheless induced new intellectual communities in which African actors played a determinative role. Knowledge and power had previously been tightly linked under the purview of precolonial elites. Colonial-era media transformed this relationship by attempting to democratize knowledge while monopolizing power, providing key opportunities for African political challengers. Newspapers and radio in particular extended the promise of political accountability, but often delivered the less-satisfying experience of state and corporate monopoly. Greater attention to the political economies in which media are embedded offers historians opportunity to integrate the material and economic lives of African actors with the better-studied intellectual trajectories of Africa’s varied public spheres.

Abstract:
Despite increasing political emphasis across the Middle East on the need to transition to lower carbon, efficient, and environmentally responsible energy systems and economies, legal innovations required to drive such transitions have not been given detailed analysis and consideration. This chapter develops a profile of law and governance innovations required to integrate and balance electricity generated from renewable energy sources (RES-E) with extant electricity grid structures in the Middle East, especially Gulf countries. It discusses the absence of renewable energy laws, the lack of legal frameworks on public–private partnerships, lack of robust pricing and financing, and lack of dedicated RES-E institutional framework. These are the main legal barriers that must be addressed if current national visions of a low-carbon transition across the Middle East are to move from mere political aspirations to realization.
