Abstract:
For wireless electric vehicle charging, the relative position of the primary and secondary coils has significant impacts on the transferred power, efficiency and leakage magnetic flux. In this paper, a magnetic positioning method using simultaneous power and data transmission (SWPDT) is proposed for power coil alignment. Four signal coils are installed on the primary coil to detect the secondary coil position. By measuring the positioning signal amplitudes from the four signal coils, the power coil relative position can be obtained. Moreover, all the communication needed in the positioning process can be satisfied well by SWPDT technology, and no extra radio frequency (RF) communication hardware is needed. The proposed positioning method can work properly both in power transfer online condition and in power transfer offline condition. Thus, a highly integrated wireless charging system is achieved, which features simultaneous power transfer, data transmission and position detection. A positioning experimental setup is built to verify the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that the positioning resolution can be maintained no lower than 1 cm in a 1060 mm × 900 mm elliptical region for a pair of 510 mm × 410 mm rectangular power coils. The three-dimensional positioning accuracy achieves up to 1 cm.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a bi-stable mechanism, which mainly consists of a suspended mass, a spacer and a bottom plate. Electromagnetic actuation is used for switching between two states (i.e. ‘On/Off’ state). The actuation is achieved via permanent magnet (PM) on the suspended mass and micro-coils embedded in the bottom plate. Different from spiral coil and central core in conventional design, micro-coils in this paper integrate Cu and Ni together as a whole, acting as both coil and ferromagnetic core. This integration simplifies the fabrication into one-mask process. Furthermore, chessboard patterned PM is utilized with Cu-Ni integrated micro-coils to generate enhanced force density. The bi-stable mechanism is designed, fabricated and experimentally characterized. Total size of this mechanism is 16 × 14 × 2 mm3. No power is needed for holding either of the state. Switching processes (both ‘On’ to ‘Off’ and ‘Off’ to ‘On’) can be realized with external acceleration of 24 G (gravity) and 37 G, respectively. Furthermore, resetting (i.e. ‘On’ to ‘Off’) can also be accomplished with 1.5 A current input.

An integrated batch annealing furnace simulator with the capability of predicting spatial and temporal evolution of temperature, microstructure and mechanical properties of the coils during the batch annealing operation has been developed. The prediction capability of this integrated simulator has been extensively validated with data collected from several industrial batch annealing operations. In this article, the problems in controlling a batch annealing operation via conventional temperature based control strategy has been highlighted. These problems can be effectively resolved by using the integrated simulator. Furthermore, the utility of this simulator has been illustrated by a case study on optimization of coil dimensions for maximization of furnace productivity.

Abstract:
Extracting the coefficients of Fourier–Bessel series, known as pseudo-multipoles or generalized gradients, from magnetic measurements of accelerator magnets involves technical and mathematical challenges. First, a novel design of a short, rotating-coil magnetometer is required that does not intercept any axial field component of the magnet. Moreover, displacing short magnetometers, step-by-step along the magnet axis, yields a convolution of the local multipole field errors and the sensitivity (test function) of the induction coil. The deconvolution must then contend with the limited signal-to-noise ratio of the measured quantities, which are integrated voltages corresponding to spatial flux distributions. Finally, the compensation schemes, as implemented on long coils and based on scaling laws derived for the integrated field harmonics, cannot be applied to short magnetometers intercepting only a local field distribution. All this requires careful design of experiment to derive the optimal length of the induction coil, the step-size of the scan, and the highest order of pseudo-multipoles in the field reconstruction. This paper presents the theory of the measurement method, the data acquisition and deconvolution, and the design and production of a saddle-shaped, rotating-coil magnetometer.

A wireless charging pad for drones based on resonant magnetic technology to recharge the internal battery is presented. The goal of the study was to design a robust, reliable and efficient charging station where a drone can land to automatically recharge its battery. The components of the wireless power transfer (WPT) system on board the drone must be compact and light in order not to alter the payload of the drone. In this study, the non-planar receiving coil of the WPT system is integrated into the drone’s landing gear while the transmitting pad is designed to be efficient for any landing point and orientation of the drone in the charging pad area. To meet these requirements, power transmission is accomplished by an array of planar coils integrated into the ground base station. The configuration of the WPT coil system, including a three-dimensional receiving coil and a multicoil transmitter, is deeply analyzed to evaluate the performance of the WPT, considering potential lateral misalignment and rotation of the receiving coil due to imprecise drone landing. According to the proposed configuration, the battery of a light drone (2 kg in weight and 0.5 kg in payload) is recharged in less than an hour, with an efficiency always greater than 75%.

Double circuit transmission line is an important part of the power grid, which is vulnerable to lightning and may endanger the security and stability of the power grid. In order to design a sensor which can monitor the lightning traveling wave current on double circuit transmission line, simulations of lightning on the double circuit transmission line were conducted. The simulation result shows that besides high frequency components, the traveling wave contains a lot of low frequency components. Based on the equivalent model and the frequency response of the self-integrated Rogowski coil, it turns out that the widely used self-integrated Rogowski coil is not suitable for this application as the problem of low frequency distortion. In this paper, through theoretical analysis and simulations in Matlab, an improved Rogowski coil with analog integrator is proposed which can correct the low frequency distortion of the self-integrated Rogowski coil. All the simulations, experiments and operating data installed to a double circuit transmission line in China verify the validity of the high bandwidth Rogowski coil.

Wireless capsule endoscopy is a promising and less invasive alternative to conventional endoscopy. A patient swallows a small capsule with an integrated camera to capture a video of the gastrointestinal tract. For accurate diagnosis and therapy, the capsule position in terms of the travelled distance must be known for each video frame. However, to date, there is no reliable localization method for endoscopy capsules. In this paper, a novel magnetic localization method is proposed. A coil as a magnetic field source is integrated into a capsule and fed with a low-frequency alternating current to prevent static geomagnetic field interference. This alternating magnetic field is measured by twelve magnetic sensors arranged in rings around the abdomen. The coil and the capsule batteries were designed based on the geometry and power supply of a commercially available endoscopy capsule and simulated by COMSOL Multiphysics software. In this way, the coil position and orientation were determined with an accuracy below 1 mm and 1°, respectively. As an analytic model for the magnetic flux density of the coil in that setup, a modified dipole model was derived. It was used to show that the batteries help to increase the amplitude of the magnetic flux density. The model is valid when signals below 100 Hz are applied, and no eddy currents are generated within the batteries. It is concluded that the magnetic flux density generated by the developed coil would be measurable with state-of-the-art magnetic sensors.

As to the production of degreasing unit, fully integrated with the equipment and technological features of the line, the approach for the setting of coiling tension was changed, which was mainly tabular method in the past. Under the new idea, the degreasing process was closely integrated with the bell-type annealing for the first time. Then, to minimize the severity of stick breaks was set as the objective function, and no loose coil and no heart-shaped coil is took as the constraint condition. On these bases, a new comprehensive optimization model for the setting of coiling tension in degreasing unit was put forward. The relation between coiling tension and coil radius was obtained, which was a quadratic curve. This simple and practical technology can make the distribution of internal stress of coil more reasonable, and reduce the incidence of stick breaks, loose coil and heart-shaped coil defects effectively and improve production efficiency, quality and the metal yield.

To deal with the power shortage of the implantable radio-telemetry system for animal physiological parameters dictation, a wireless power transmission system based on electromagnetic induction is proposed. The parameters of the couple coils are optimized considering the safety and stability of this power transmission, transmitting coil of rectangle section solenoid and three-dimensional receiving coil are selected. Experiments show that at least 150mW power could pick up on the load in a volume of Φ10.5 mm×11 mm with a transmission efficiency of 2.56%. Vivisection experiments verified the feasibility of the integrated radio-telemetry system based on this power supply technology.

We propose a wireless pressure sensor composed of a graphene sheet and a transmitter coil integrated with a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) tube. The pressure inside the tube was monitored wirelessly using an external receiver coil. We then monitored the typical blood pressure range, 12–20 kPa, using this fabricated sensor by changing the turn number of the receiver coil and the overlapping length of the coils. Furthermore, we demonstrated wireless blood pressure measurement by connecting our sensor to the blood vessel of a rat. Our results suggested that this sensor can be easily inserted between an implantable medical device and blood vessels for in vivo blood pressure monitoring. The proposed wireless pressure sensor could also be suitable for monitoring in vivo implanted medical systems, such as artificial organs and pump systems.

Recently, the press-pack insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) has usually been used in direct current (DC) transmission. The press-pack IGBT (PPI) adopts a parallel layout of boss chips, and the currents of each chip will be uneven in the process of turning on and off, which will affect the reliability of the device. To measure the currents of each chip, based on the analysis of the principle and equivalent model of the Rogowski coil, this paper puts forward the design scheme and design index of multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB) Rogowski coil with good high-frequency performance, strong anti-interference ability and sufficient sensitivity. With the simulation analysis of Altium Designer and ANSYS softwares, a 1 mm thick, 76-turn integrated four-layer PCB Rogowski coil is designed. Then, adding a composite integrator, an integrated Rogowski coil sensor for measurement of PPI chips currents is designed. The Pspice simulation and the experiment results show that the sensor is fully satisfied with the chip current measurement.

Abstract:
The article concerns the research on the properties of core-shell superparamagnetic nanoparticles in the context of their use in medicine for diagnostics and therapy. The article presents a system for impedance (AC) spectroscopy of nanoparticles with a new arrangement of receive coils. A significant modification was the position of the reference coil in relation to the receive coils as well as the method of winding and routing the wires on the carcass. The 3D printing technique was used in the production of the measuring coil system. The aim of the work was to experimentally verify the developed measurement system and analyze its properties. The system tests were carried out at low frequencies ranging from 2 to 50 kHz. Complex magnetic susceptibility was measured for superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in polymer shells in a physiological saline solution. The obtained results confirmed the relevance of the concept of the measurements. In summary, the observed properties of the realized system are discussed and further directions of its development are proposed.

We present a low-cost, low-power, high efficiency, and portable integrated implementations of a lab-on-chip for magnetic molecular level sensing manipulation, and diagnosis. The design features an all-integrated programmable magnetic coil array for sensing and actuating small magnetic bead objects. The coil array is selectively and dynamically controlled using the smallest permissible vertical coil inductors in this technology. Each cell, composed of the coil and its logical control circuitry, can detect small objects in the order of 1 μm diameter as well as emit eight programmable magnetic field levels for manipulation. All array sensing and driving components are shared to reduce the overall imprint. They are tuned towards the 900 s MHz ISM band and incorporating high-speed serial row/column switching up to 40 MHz for seamless pseudo-parallel operation.

This paper investigates worm coil distribution and load-carrying ability for a toroidal drive. The lead angle equations for the worm groove are given for different coil distributions. The center curve of the worm groove is obtained using coordinate transformation. A 3D worm model is constructed using Pro/Engineer software and the average output torque is presented to compare load-carrying ability for the drive with different worm coil distributions. As the number of the planet teeth increases, the output torque of the drive first increases then decreases. Large output torque requires an optimum number of planet teeth and a larger number of pole pairs and stator teeth.

This paper presents tunable inductors designed with vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin film to implement tunability. Two types of configurations, a single line coil inductor and a dual line coil inductor, are proposed. Tunable inductance is realized by thermally controlling VO2 thin film stub to be an insulator or a conductor. The measurements of inductors are taken in the frequencies range from 0.01 GHz to 10 GHz. The electrical model has been developed to derive the corresponding inductance. The results show that the tuning range is about 69% when the temperature changes from room temperature to above the critical temperature of 68°C.

This research paper presents the design of a wireless power transfer (WPT) circuit integrated with magnetic resonance coupling (MRC) and harvested radio frequency (RF) energy to wirelessly charge the battery of a mobile device. A capacitor (100 µF, 16 V) in the RF energy harvesting circuit stored the converted power, and the accumulated voltage stored in the capacitor was 9.46 V. The foundation of the proposed WPT prototype circuit included two coils (28 AWG)—a transmitter coil, and a receiver coil. The transmitter coil was energized by the alternating current (AC), which produced a magnetic field, which in turn induced a current in the receiver coil. The harvested RF energy (9.46 V) was converted into AC, which energized the transmitter coil and generated a magnetic field. The electronics in the receiver coil then converted the AC into direct current (DC), which became usable power to charge the battery of a mobile device. The experimental setup based on mathematical modeling and simulation displayed successful charging capabilities of MRC, with the alternate power source being the harvested RF energy. Mathematical formulae were applied to calculate the amount of power generated from the prototype circuit. LTSpice simulation software was applied to demonstrate the behavior of the different components in the circuit layout for effective WPT transfer.

A new system was deviced that allows the electrolytical detachment of platinum microcoils at variable lengths for the endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms. The detachment element consists of two short platinum coil segments, which are connected by a threat of stainless steel. The steel threat is interrupted by electrolysis, using a continuous current with 1–2 mA at a voltage of 4–8 Volt. The average detachment time in heparinized blood is about 30–40 sec. The detachment elements can be used to connect either an insertion wire with a platinum coil or to connect several segments of platinum coils with variable helices and lengths. If several detachment elements are integrated in a coil, electrolysis interrupts only the element, which is next beyond the distal tip of the catheter. The electrolytical process does not affect the detachment elements proximal and distal to the element adjacent to the tip of the catheter. Single or several coil segments can be pulled back into the microcatheter if necessary. The system is expected to allow a faster and more complete endovascular coil occlusion of intracranial aneurysms. The principles described in this paper are claimed by the German pending patent DE 100 10840 A1.

SummaryThe surface coils of the Biograph mMR integrated PET/MR system were optimised for PET, but are otherwise unaccounted for. The patient table is still more massive than those of PET/CT devices. The goal was to assess those hardware effects on quantification, count statistics, image quality and scan time both with phantoms and in patients and to investigate their clinical relevance. Patients, material, methods: PET phantom data were acquired with and without the patient table. Image noise was expressed as relative standard deviation and compared to a state-of-the-art PET/CT scanner. Protocols of the phantom/patient study regarding the surface coils were similar. Thoraces/ab- domens of 11 patients were scanned with and without a coil (1 BP, 4 min). Mean uptake and standard deviation in a cubical VOI were derived and expressed as SUV. Results: The patient table reduced the number of true coincidences (trues) by 19% (PET/MR) and by 11% (PET/CT). The scan duration for the mMR had to be increased by approximately 30% to achieve a noise level comparable to that of the PET/CT. Decreased SUVs with coil observed in the phantom were confirmed by the patient study. By removing the coil, the mean liver SUV increased by (6 ± 2)%. With (+3 ± 14)%, the average change was similar in lesions, but exceeded 20% in almost one fifth of them. The number of trues grew by (6 ± 1)% for the patients and by 7% for the phantom. Conclusion: Due to the additional attenuation caused by MR hardware, PET scan durations would have to be increased compared to current PET/CTs to provide similar image noise levels. The effect of the coils is mostly in the order of statistical fluctuations. In tumour lesions, it is more pronounced and shows a larger variability. Therefore, coils should be included in the attenuation correction to ensure accurate quantification and thus comparability across PET/MR and PET/CT scanners and within patient populations.

Measurement of integrated magnetic induction is an important part of the construction of insertion devices. The so-called `flipping coil system' is normally utilized to characterize the integrated multipole components of the device, a requirement which varies from one storage ring to another. A Helmholtz coil system is used to determine a magnetization vector of each magnet piece in the device. Both systems are designed to measure the integrated magnetic flux to deduce the necessary quantities using the known relationship. We have developed an unconventional system which has a continuously rotating mechanism that allows the use of a lock-in amplifier instead of an integrator or a voltmeter. Detailed descriptions of the equipment are given.

Rogowski coils are inductive sensors based on Faraday’s and Ampère’s Laws to measure currents through conductors without galvanic contact. The main advantage of Rogowski coils when compared with current transformers is the fact that the core is air so they never saturate and the upper cut-off current can be higher. These characteristics make Rogowski coils ideal candidates to measure high-amplitude pulsed currents. However, there are two main drawbacks. On the one hand, the output voltage is the derivative of the primary current so it has to be integrated to measure the original signal; on the other hand, the transfer function is resonant as a result of the capacitance and the self-inductance of the coil. The solution is the use of a passive integration with a terminating resistor at the output of the sensor that splits the two complex poles and gives a constant transfer function for a determined bandwidth. The downside is a loss of sensitivity. Since it is possible to calculate the electrical parameters of the coil based on its geometrical dimensions, the geometry can be adapted to design sensors for different applications depending on the time characteristics of the input current. This paper proposes the design of Rogowski coils based on their geometric characteristics maximizing the gain-bandwidth product using particle swarm optimization and adapting the coils to the specific requirements of the application.

Magnetoelectric (ME) effects in composite ferromagnet-piezoelectric (FM/PE) heterostructures realize the mutual transformation of alternating magnetic and electric fields, and are used to create magnetic field sensors, actuators, inductors, gyrators, and transformers. The ME effect in composite structures is excited by an alternating magnetic field, which is created using volumetric electromagnetic coils. The coil increases the size, limits the operating frequencies, and complicates the manufacture of devices. In this work, we propose to excite the ME effect in composite heterostructures using a new coil-free excitation system, similar to a “magnetic capacitor”. The system consists of parallel electrodes integrated into the heterostructure, through which an alternating current flows. Modeling and measurements have shown that the excitation magnetic field is localized mainly between the electrodes of the magnetic capacitor and has a fairly uniform spatial distribution. Monolithic FM/PE heterostructures of various designs with FM layers of amorphous Metglas alloy or nickel-zinc ferrite and PE layers of lead zirconate titanate piezoceramic were fabricated and investigated. The magnitude of the ME effect in such structures is comparable to the magnitude of the ME effect in structures excited by volumetric coils. However, the low impedance of the coil-free excitation system makes it possible to increase the operating frequency, reducing the size of ME devices and the power consumption. The use of coil-free excitation opens up the possibility of creating planar ME devices, and accelerates their integration into modern electronics and microsystem technology.

This work presents a novel design of a bidirectional Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) system capable of continuous monitoring of cardiac pressure. The proposed system results from a robust electromagnetic coupling between an external reading coil and an implanted two-level (3D approach) inductor array. In this design, each coupling module follows a 13.56 MHz operating frequency, where both passive RCL networks are near field tuned. Among our main results, we obtained a Power Transfer Efficiency (PTE) of 94.1% across the 3.5 cm-thick composed biological tissue whereas the implanted coil array is about 50% of its conventional size. Since the resulting PTE efficiency is 40% higher, based on the optimized L and Q parameters, this novel approach could be used in other medical applications. This IPT system design is based on a low-cost thin film fabrication technology.

The performance of integrated solar collector / thermal energy storage with immersed heat exchanger was investigated experimentally at the Solar Research Site, University Technology PETRONAS, (4.4224oN, 100.9904oE), Malaysia. The experimental set up consisted of 150 liters storage tank capacity with immersed coil heat exchanger, single glazing 1.5m2 flat plate collector with 15o tilt to the horizontal. The circulation of the working fluid was by forced in closed loop with a mini solar pump. Aluminum cell foam was attached to the absorber as extended surface. The surface of the collector was coated with black ornament to improve its absorption. The system was tested under clear skys, for two cases; with and without water drawn-off for seven days per case studied. The performance evaluation data obtained for case1 at the mean maximum solar intensity was 503.98 W/m2 were: maximum daily water temperature 63°C, average daily water temperature 46°C, collector efficiency 63% and system efficiency 43%. Whilst for case 2, the mean maximum solar intensity was 473.11 W/m2, the maximum daily water temperature 54°C, average daily water temperature 39.36°C, collector efficiency 54% and system efficiency 39%. The system efficiency for case 2 showed that the heat exchanger performed slighlty better and the water drawn-off effect is minimal.

A Planar square stack coupled inductor coils on silicon substrate has been fabricated using MEMS technology. The fabrication process utilized a simple, cost effective process technique as well as CMOS compatible resulting to a reproducible and good controlled process. The basic characteristics of the coupled inductors were discussed in wide range of operating frequency. The analysis results showed that the geometry of the inductor coil strongly affects the basic characteristics of the coils. The results of the study have promised a good prospect for the development of fully integrated planar magnetic field generator for sensing and actuating purposes.

The integrated system of electromagnetic brake and frictional brake of car can improve braking performance effectively. Reasonable control strategy is the key of the integrated brake system. In this paper, it is analyzed and compared to the fuzzy control, PID control and fuzzy PID control. Based on that, fuzzy PID control is used to control the amount of current flowing in the electromagnetic brake coil by considering the nonlinear and time-varying of the integrated system of electromagnetic brake and frictional brake of car. The vehicle slip ratio deviation and rate of the slip rate deviation are used as the input. The electromagnetic brake coil current is used as the output. Thus, the fuzzy PID controller of the system is designed. A car equipped with the integrated system of electromagnetic and frictional brake is taken as an example. Matlab/Simulink software is utilized to carry out simulation analysis of the system. It is analyzed and compared the simulation output current curves of three control methods, braking time and braking distance. The simulation result shows that the integrated brake system using fuzzy PID strategy can effectively reduce braking time and shorten braking distance.

This paper describes improvements in a segmented dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) system for electric vehicles (EVs), and aims to offer a stable charging method for high-power applications. An integrated design is presented, including the modified switching sequence, the size of segmented transmitters, and parallel inverter technology for high-power applications. Three consecutive transmitters mounted on the rail track are energized according to the position of the pickups. This three-consecutive-transmitter group is comprised of a Q-shaped coil, a DD-shaped coil, and a Q-shaped coil again (QDDQ). QDDQ is used as an elementary energized group to optimize the number of energized transmitters and mitigate the output voltage variation. The entire DWPT system is designed with finite element analysis (FEA) and studied with circuit topologies. Overall, an experimental prototype for dynamic charging is built to verify the overall performance, which shows a great agreement with the theoretical analysis. In this prototype, there are five transmitters and one receiver. All dimensions are 500 mm × 500 mm. The proposed system has been validated to realize 500 V constant output voltage with approximately 85% dc-dc efficiency from the 100 Ω to 200 Ω load conditions. A 2.5 kW maximum output power occurs at the 100 Ω load condition.
