Abstract:
Treating the other as an autonomous person is widely considered a guiding ethical principle. The notions of autonomy and personhood are, however, far from evident in a time of striding naturalism. Hermeneutical phenomenology provides an explanation of these notions, and argues that personhood is not merely an ethical principle, but an integral part of vulnerability to mental illness. In other words, ethics and questions of norms and values are not merely a bioethical add-on to psychiatry, but an integral part of what it means to do psychiatry. Being a person is to be faced with the constant task of becoming who I am through the otherness that constitutes my life as a person. Otherness challenges my life from without (e.g., the way other people understand and treat me) and from within (e.g., my body, habits, and dispositions). Although a major aspect of personal identity is constituted by otherness, a person is able, nevertheless, to change her habits, think about her dispositions, and reconsider her actions. This ability to relate ourselves to what and who we are is constitutive of personhood and of the fragility that makes each of us the person that we are.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay provides a global overview of prostitution from the early modern period to the present. Although the distinction between “premodern” and “modern” prostitution is not necessarily sharp, the profound political, military, and socioeconomic changes from roughly 1600 onward had an important impact on the sale of sex. Worldwide, the practice of prostitution and societal reactions to it were influenced by processes of colonization, industrialization, urbanization, the rise of nation-states, military modernization, nationalism, and war, as well as revolutions in politics, agriculture, transport, and communication. A long historical and broad geographical perspective reveals the continuities and discontinuities in the way commercial sex was practiced, perceived, and policed. This essay paper approaches prostitution from a double (top-down and bottom-up) perspective that integrates criminology and labor theory, presenting the views of authorities, anti-vice campaigners, and society at large while situating prostitution as an integral part of labor history.

Abstract:
In prior research, elders recounted experiences of suffering as a rupture of the integrity of the person, thus a brokenness in body, mind, and spirit. Persons interviewed stated that their ethnicity, biography, history, and mental and physical health were integral to an experience of suffering. Likewise, the context of suffering—when in life it occurred, its cause, and its resolution—also was included in descriptions of suffering. Did male caregivers agree with this assessment? We welcomed caregiving respondents’ definitions of suffering and asked them to give examples in their own lives. This chapter also explores the experience of mourning the loved one who is still alive but lost within dementia or is enduring other illnesses.

Abstract:
The term ‘personhood’ refers to the state or condition of being a person. Studies of personhood investigate how persons emerge from specific ways of being in the world, and consider personhood and concepts of the person to be socially and culturally varied. This article explores the development of studies of personhood mainly in anthropology and archaeology in the context of previous and ongoing studies of identity and material culture. In so doing it seeks to demonstrate the importance of relationships between personhood and materiality — a term referring to the material character of the world at large, regardless of it being ‘cultural’ or ‘natural’. This article begins by outlining the development of studies of social and cultural identity, and explores the role played by material culture in these studies. This article also examines personhood as a specific axis of identity, and explores the integral relation between concepts of personhood and conceptions of materiality.

Abstract:
A distinguishing feature of performance management relative to performance appraisal is that the former is an ongoing process whereas the latter is done at discrete time intervals (e.g. annually). Ongoing coaching is an integral aspect of performance management. Performance appraisal is the time period in which to summarize the overall progress that an individual or team has made as a result of being coached, and to agree on the new goals that should be set. Common to the performance management/appraisal process are the four following steps. First, desired job performance must be defined. Second, an individual's performance on the job must be observed. Is the person or team's performance excellent, superior, satisfactory, or unacceptable? Third, feedback is provided and specific challenging goals are set as to what the person or team should start doing, stop doing, or be doing differently. Fourth, a decision is made regarding retaining, rewarding, training, transferring, promoting, demoting, or terminating the employmemt of an individual.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
"This book reviews the spectrum of death, from when the living person turns to corpse until the person lives in the memory of mourners, and its impact on the ecology of the socio-cultural community and physical environment. This book demonstrates that American society today is in a pivotal period for re-imaging end-of-life care, funerary services, human disposition methods, memorializing, and mourning. The editors and contributors outline the past, present, and future of death care rituals, pointing to promising new practices and innovative projects that show how we can better integrate the dying and dead with the living and create positive change that supports sustainable stewardship of our environment. Individual chapters describe prevailing practices and issues in different settings where people die and in postmortem rituals; disposition and current ecologically and, in urban areas, spatially unsustainable methods; law of human remains; customs and trends among key stakeholders, such as cemeteries and funeral directors; and relevant technological advances. The book culminates in a presentation of emerging sustainable disposition technologies and innovative designs for proposed public memorial projects that respond to shifting values, beliefs, and priorities among an increasingly diverse population."

Persons with disabilities, the world’s largest minority group, have experienced oppression and have been excluded from participating in public affairs for most of human history. The United Nations Ad Hoc Committee on a Comprehensive and Integral International Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities arguably represents a turning point in the voice persons with disabilities have in the formation and implementation of international and domestic laws and policies. The Ad Hoc Committee realized the clarion call “nothing about us without us” both during the debates and in the formation of a convention that continues the voice of persons with disabilities and their representative bodies in the early 21st century.

Abstract:
This chapter seeks to develop a working understanding of the notions of period domain and period mapping, as well as familiarity with basic examples thereof. It first reviews the notion of a polarized Hodge structure H of weight n over the integers, for which the motivating example is the primitive cohomology in dimension n of a projective algebraic manifold of the same dimension. Next, the chapter presents lectures on period domains and monodromy, as well as elliptic curves. Hereafter, the chapter provides an example of period mappings, before considering Hodge structures of weight. After expounding on Poincaré residues, this chapter establishes some properties of the period mapping for hypersurfaces and the Jacobian ideal and the local Torelli theorem. Finally, the chapter studies the distance-decreasing properties and integral manifolds of the horizontal distribution.

Arcuri, Alberto. Sicurezza integrata e welfare di comunità. Edited by Tommaso Giupponi. Fondazione Bologna University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30682/sg314.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Latinos in the United States face serious mental health care disparities. A combination of person-level barriers, such as low levels of acculturation, stigma, negative attitudes towards mental health treatments, and limited health literacy, contribute to these inequities in mental health care. In this chapter, we review the literature on how person-level barriers impact mental health care disparities in the Latino community. We describe how a depression fotonovela, “Secret Feelings”, that integrates cultural elements from the Latino community and uses an entertainment-education approach can help address these barriers. We also discuss the practice and research implications of using “Secret Feelings” to improve mental health care in the Latino community.

Abstract:
Starting with a review of vector fields and their integral curves, the book presents the basic equations of the subject: Euler and Navier–Stokes. Some solutions are studied next: ideal flows using conformal transformations, viscous flows such as Couette and Stokes flow around a sphere, shocks in the Burgers equation. Prandtl’s boundary layer theory and the Blasius solution are presented. Rayleigh–Taylor instability is studied in analogy with the inverted pendulum, with a digression on Kapitza’s stabilization. The possibility of transients in a linearly stable system with a non-normal operator is studied using an example by Trefethen et al. The integrable models (KdV, Hasimoto’s vortex soliton) and their hamiltonian formalism are studied. Delving into deeper mathematics, geodesics on Lie groups are studied: first using the Lie algebra and then using Milnor’s approach to the curvature of the Lie group. Arnold’s deep idea that Euler’s equations are the geodesic equations on the diffeomorphism group is then explained and its curvature calculated. The next three chapters are an introduction to numerical methods: spectral methods based on Chebychev functions for ODEs, their application by Orszag to solve the Orr–Sommerfeld equation, finite difference methods for elementary PDEs, the Magnus formula and its application to geometric integrators for ODEs. Two appendices give an introduction to dynamical systems: Arnold’s cat map, homoclinic points, Smale’s horse shoe, Hausdorff dimension of the invariant set, Aref ’s example of chaotic advection. The last appendix introduces renormalization: Ising model on a Cayley tree and Feigenbaum’s theory of period doubling.

Having originated at that intriguing frontier where Islamicate and Indic civilizations first mingled, the Sikh religious tradition today has perhaps the most elaborate martyrology of any religion. Underscored within every possible medium and emphasized within even the most intimate of Sikh prayers, martyrdom has been understood to be an integral element of Sikhism since the tradition’s inception in the person of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak (1469–1539). Sikhs claim to follow the words and spirit of the Sikh Gurus, and in their personal lives manifest martyrdom’s strong hold on the Sikh imaginary. An examination of historical sources, however, reveals an intricate evolution and reification of martyrdom that situates martyrdom’s contemporary appeal in early twentieth-century political upheavals in northwestern India and eastern Pakistan.

Abstract:
The concept of tonal structure is intimately associated with the person of Heinrich Schenker, but ultimately in order to enter dialogue with Schenker the theory of tonal structure must take the place of “Schenkerian analysis” in our discourse. A number of useful principles of tonal structure may be derived from Schenker’s theory: Schenkerian notation agrees with the network representation for temporal structure, and linear progressions are a good starting point for a tonal structure discovery procedure. The theory of the Ursatz, however, cannot be understood as an empirical claim but rather as a collection of grammatical norms. Also, Schenker’s dismissal of the concept of key is disputed, and a theory of tonal structure to which keys and modulation are integral is presented.

Abstract:
Devils, ghosts, poltergeists, werewolves, and witches are all covered in this book about the "dark side" of supernatural beliefs in early modern Europe, tapping period literature, folklore, art, and scholarly writings in its investigation. The dark side of early modern European culture could be deemed equal in historical significance to Christianity based on the hundreds of books that were printed about the topic between 1400 and 1700. Famous writers and artists like William Shakespeare and Albrecht Dürer depicted the dark side in their work, and some of the first printed books in Europe were about witches. The pervasive representation of these monsters and apparitions in period literature, folklore, and art clearly reflects their power to inspire fear and superstition, but also demonstrates how integral they were to early modern European culture. This unique book addresses topics of the supernatural within the context of the early modern period in Europe, covering "mythical" entities such as devils, witches, ghosts, poltergeists, and werewolves in detail and examining how they fit in with the emerging new scientific method of the time. This unique combination of cultural studies for the period is ideal for undergraduate students and general readers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Peace had dominated the discourse on the nature of Roman imperialism as the political institutions of the state were questioned and debated during the civil wars of the 40s and 30s BC, to the slow reformulation of powers around the single person of Augustus. The evolution of an imperial conception of peace from the early stages of the representations of pax augusta during the slow birth of the new political structures to a fully fledged idea of the pax Romana comes to fruition in Vespasian’s templum Pacis by the mid-70s AD and illustrates the integral value and position that peace had gained in a Roman imperial vision. The accomplishment of pax represented not only the stability and security brought to the state in a post-civil war world, but also the control over an Empire that such a peace enabled.

Abstract:
This chapter describes Bob Fosse’s work on the shows Redhead and The Conquering Hero. At Gwen Verdon’s insistence, Fosse was hired as both choreographer and director of Redhead, a musical comedy murder mystery. Working closely with the authors, Fosse shaped Redhead into a dazzling star vehicle with the pace and fluidity of a show fully staged by one person. This success was followed by The Conquering Hero, on which Fosse felt that his contributions as director-choreographer were sufficiently integral to the show’s creation that he sought, and received, Dramatists Guild recognition as an author. But this time, his relationship with his collaborators was combative, and he was dismissed while the show was in out-of-town tryouts. Fosse’s experience on The Conquering Hero demonstrated that the control he increasingly sought was not always easily negotiated.

Abstract:
Constitution-making is often integral to achieving a new political settlement after conflict and in fragile settings. However, the process fails with relative frequency, in that actors cannot agree on a new text or the finalized text is not approved or ratified. While failure may be temporary—the process may resume after a period of time—it can also be costly. Key reforms may depend on the adoption of a new or revised constitution, and in its absence negotiations may stall and conflict recur. This Paper starts a conversation about the potential grounds for, and strategies to prevent or build on, failure. It was developed following the Ninth Edinburgh Dialogue on Post-Conflict Constitution-Building held in September 2022.

Nurses are an integral part of the interdisciplinary team caring for patients with HIV/AIDS. Since the start of the epidemic nurses have provided care across the healthcare spectrum, serving as care coordinators, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse practitioners. To competently care for people with HIV or AIDS, nurses have to provide care that is advanced and specialized. Nurses working in the field of HIV or AIDS care require advanced knowledge of virology and infectious disease to address the clinical needs of persons with HIV-related illness. This chapter describes the historical engagement of nurses in the epidemic and the nursing strategies that support interprofessional work. It addresses the key aspects of nursing care of the HIV-infected adult throughout the spectrum of HIV illness. The chapter focuses on the nurse’s role in minimizing risk, preventing HIV transmission, caring for persons with HIV, helping individuals to cope with illness, and negotiating the healthcare system.

Abstract:
This study is about the tensions between the early framers of Islam and non-Muslims in the early Islamic period. More specifically, it is about how these early framers struggled with religious others, both external and internal, and how this struggle was ultimately responsible for the creation of what would emerge as (Sunnī) orthodoxy. While the latter would appear as the natural outgrowth of Muhammad’s preaching to those doing the framing, it was ultimately little more than a subsequent development accompanied by a retroactive projection onto the earliest period. Non-Muslims (among them Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians) and the “wrong” kinds of Muslims (e.g., Shīʿa) became integral—by virtue of their perceived stubbornness, infidelity, heresy, or the like—to understand what true religion was not and, just as importantly, what it should be. Without such religious others, proper belief could not be articulated and orthodoxy would simply have remained adrift in its own inchoateness.

Abstract:
The archaeology of Sardinia is characterized by complex architecture and a rich figurine tradition. The visual narrative is a focal point of life in the pre-Nuragic and Nuragic phases, and a key element of ideology. Figurines first appear in the Middle Neolithic. They become an integral part of cosmology until the Early Copper Age, after which there is a period where figuration (but not representation) is no longer in use. Figurines reappear in the Nuragic period. At this time they are almost exclusively made of metal, with a few stone figurines from Monte Prama. The secondary agency of bronze figurines (bronzetti) is a powerful element in the performance of social relations. This chapter reassesses the role of figurines by (a) situating them within their social contexts in increasingly complex societies; (b) tracing the nature and timings of their appearance and disappearances; and (c) examining the role of visual imagery in establishing and maintaining dominant symbol systems.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This collection of new essays offers in-depth analysis of the multi-faceted relationship between women, periodicals and print culture in Victorian Britain. This period witnessed the proliferation of print culture and the greater availability of periodicals for an increasingly diverse readership and, as a result, the Victorian periodical press has been of keen interest to scholars working across a range of specialist fields in recent decades. No previous volume, however, has offered as rich or as diverse a set of essays on women’s periodicals and women authors, editors, engravers, illustrators and readers of this crucial period in the history of periodical culture. This was, after all, a significant period in women’s history, in which the ‘Woman Question’ dominated public debate, and writers and commentators from a range of perspectives engaged with ideas and ideals about womanhood ranging from the ‘Angel in the House’ to the New Woman. Essays in this collection gather together expertise from leading scholars as well as emerging new voices in order to produce sustained analysis of underexplored periodicals and authors and to reveal in new ways the dynamic and integral relationship between women’s history and print culture in Victorian society.

Abstract:
This essay argues that popular justice must be understood as an integral (and disturbing) part of the legal and constitutional history of the United States. To explore that idea, this essay examines popular justice as a process that occurs whenever people take the law into their own hands. Viewing popular justice as a process of judging and punishing tells us several key things about the concept. First, it suggests that while popular justice may be violent, it need not be; gossip may punish as effectively as tarring and feathering. Second, it implies that popular justice need not always be carried out by a collective; individuals can take the law into their own hands in defense of person or property, or to protest perceived injustice. Third, it reminds us that there is a constitutional aspect to popular justice: it is “popular” because it is carried out by non-state actors.

Abstract:
This chapter, ‘Creation: Primal Sociality’, outlines how Bonhoeffer develops a doctrine of creation (the primal state) as a basis for constructively engaging social theory. This doctrine provides Bonhoeffer with a space within which to draw in concepts and insights from existing social theory, without thereby granting these concepts and insights general applicability (i.e. validity apart from an account of reality in terms of the dialectic of creation, sin, and reconciliation). A doctrine of creation provides Bonhoeffer with a space to begin to develop Christian social-philosophical concepts (e.g. ‘person’, ‘relation’, etc.) and sociological concepts (e.g. ‘community’ [Gemeinschaft], ‘society’ [Gesellschaft], etc.), all of which will prove integral for his ecclesiology or account of the church. In this chapter, it is further argued that Bonhoeffer is involved in a nuanced and careful corrective of existing sociology and its normative anthropological assumptions, especially as represented by Ferdinand Tönnies and Ernst Troeltsch.

After a long period of scholarly neglect, owing partly to political reasons, the Second World War is now being studied as an integral part of the history of the Soviet Union. This chapter considers the war’s far reaching effects on state and society, taking a multi-faceted, comparative view. Beginning with German and Soviet war aims, the chapter goes on to highlight recent historiography, which has revealed much about the experience of the individual Soviet soldier and has emphasized that by concentrating on military set-pieces, such as the battle of Stalingrad, we risk distorting our understanding of the war. Also discussed are controversial subjects such as collaboration and partisan warfare, and the impact of the war on the Russian Orthodox Church and on Russian national identity.
