Abstract:

Abstract:
This book provides a penetrating historical analysis of why countless studies show that Americans are far less healthy than their European counterparts. The book argues that Europeans are healthier than Americans because beginning in the late nineteenth century, European nations began construction of health systems that focused not only on medical care but the broad social determinants of health: where and how we live, work, play, and age. European leaders also created social safety nets that became integral to national economic policy. In contrast, US leaders often viewed investments to improve the social determinants of health and safety-net programs as a competing priority to economic growth. This book compares the United States to three European social democracies — France, Germany, and Sweden — in order to explain how, in differing ways, each protects the health of infants and children, working-age adults, and the elderly. Unlike most comparative health system analyses, the book draws on history to find answers to our most nettlesome health policy questions.

Abstract:
This article delineates the integral place of medicine and corporeal thought in the structuring and sustaining of ‘the modernist project’. It is predicated on an understanding of the transcendence of modernity in ‘postmodernity’. It also discusses briefly the place of modernism in medicine. First, though, a brief survey of ‘the modern’ in medicine is in order. The concept of modernity has been a major source of acrimony, anxiety, and debate since at least the sixteenth century. Its pursuit in the history and historiography of medicine demands much more than simply tracing innovations, and far more than merely challenging vague assignments of the label to scientific institutions and authorities formalizing the status of health and disease.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 1, “Medicine as a Human Experience,” examines the foundational principles of patient-centered care, a shift from the historical paradigm in favor of the illness and doctor-centered approach. The four essential principles that underlie all of medicine as a human experience are acceptance, empathy, conceptualization, and competence. Acceptance and empathy are essential to developing a healing partnership with one’s patients. Both stem from self-awareness, for it is difficult to accept another human being if you have not first accepted yourself. Conceptualization, using the biopsychosocial model and even expanding it to include issues of existential meaning and the human spirit, is related directly to comprehensive medical care. All are integral to our fourth principle, competence, which demands the clinician appraise clinical data critically to see the overall picture in balance with the integration of the other foundational principles.

Abstract:
Beyond simply providing positive content for “spirituality” or fodder for bioethical debates, theology—considered both as the practices and language of religious communities and as secondary discourse about these practices—is integral to the past, present, and future of modern medicine and health care. Throughout medical history, theologically driven innovations such as the charity hospital have transformed cultural practices of care, and broader theological commitments such as the early Protestant Christian “affirmation of ordinary life” shaped the contours within modern medicine. In the present, theologically-informed institutions and practices such as the hospice movement birthed by Dame Cicely Saunders and the Church Health Center in Memphis, Tennessee continue to transform contemporary health care. And in a future marked by uncertainty and scarcity, theology can help religious communities to resist both secularism and religious triumphalism and instead to embody practices of faithful witness with regard to health and health care.

Yang, Jingduan, and Daniel A. Monti. Clinical Acupuncture and Ancient Chinese Medicine. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190210052.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Clinical Acupuncture and Ancient Chinese Medicine provides health care professionals interested in learning or practicing acupuncture the essential theoretical foundation of Chinese medicine on which an effective acupuncture therapy must be based. It describes in detail the human energetic anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and etiology for both mental and physical functions of children, men, women, and the elderly. It offers a step-by-step algorithm for diagnosing physical or mental ailments with diagnostic techniques and formulation processes and treating them with effective strategies, plans, and acupuncture techniques. Clinical Acupuncture and Ancient Chinese Medicine also presents acupuncture as an energy medicine, in contrast to modern medicine, which is a more biochemically and structurally based medicine. Both are integral parts in the spectrum of human medicine, more complementary than alternative to each other. This book helps readers to study and practice acupuncture as part of their continued medical education (CME) and as a natural expansion of their practice to provide additional care for their patients at the energetic level at which a majority of ailments lay. The content is organized in a way that parallels modern medicine so readers can more easily relate and understand concepts that may be otherwise foreign to them. This book describes human health with the belief that a human being is essentially an energetic being and that the interaction of human energy with the energy of nature and the universe is critical to maintaining a healthy life. It provides useful contents for self-care and the ancient practice of life cultivation.

Cox, Katrina. Pharmacy and the CF pharmacopoeia. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198702948.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
Medicines are an integral part of CF care and are prescribed and administered with the intention of improving health and quality of life. Many factors are taken into account when choosing a medicine to prescribe for a patient. Once prescribed, medicines require monitoring for effectiveness and side effects, the CF specialist pharmacist is well placed to do this. The CF Pharmacopoeia details important characteristics of these medicines. Allergies to medicines can pose a challenge, but desensitising individuals with allergies to antibiotics offers an opportunity to use choices that would otherwise be contraindicated.
