Abstract:
People outside France have always wondered why analytical philosophy has had so little influence in this country, while it has gained currency in many other European countries, such as Germany and Italy, not to speak of Northern Europe, where the analytical tradition is strongly established. This can be explained only by a particular conjunction of historical, cultural, sociological and maybe economical factors, which it would be too long to detail here. If there are natural characters of nations, there is no reason to believe that there are no philosophical characters of nations. As Hume said, the characters of nations can have physical as well as moral causes. As for the physical causes, everybody in Britain knows how insular the Continent can be. So if there is such a thing as French analytical philosophy, nobody will be surprised to learn that it is very insular. Before presenting some of the work done by French philosophers related to the analytical tradition, let me try to give what I take to be some of the moral causes of their insularity.

Abstract:
Background: Epilepsy is a chronic disease that affects millions of people around the world generating great expenses and psychosocial problems burdening the public health in different ways. A considerable number of patients are refractory to the drug treatment requiring a more detailed and specialized investigation to establish the most appropriate therapeutic option. Insular epilepsy is a rare form of focal epilepsy commonly drug resistant and has much of its investigation and treatment involved with the surgical management at some point. The insula or the insular lobe is a portion of the cerebral cortex located in the depth of the lateral sulcus of the brain; its triangular in shape and connects with the other adjacent lobes. The insular lobe is a very interesting and complex portion of the brain related with different functions. Insula in Latin means Island and was initially described in the 18th century but its relation with epilepsy was first reported in the 1940–1950s. Insular lobe epilepsy is generally difficult to identify and confirm due to its depth and interconnections. Initial non-invasive studies generally demonstrate frustrating or incoherent information about the origin of the ictal event. Technological evolution made this pathology to be progressively better recognized and understood enabling professionals to perform the correct diagnosis and choose the ideal treatment for the affected population. Methods: A literature review was performed using MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. The terms epilepsy/epileptic seizure of the insula and surgical treatment was used in various combinations. We included studies that were published in English, French, or Portuguese; performed in humans with insular epilepsy who underwent some surgical treatment (microsurgery, laser ablation, or radiofrequency thermocoagulation). Results: Initial search results in 1267 articles. After removing the duplicates 710 remaining articles were analyzed for titles and abstracts applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. 70 studies met all inclusion criteria and were selected. Conclusion: At present, the main interests and efforts are in the attempt to achieve and standardize the adequate management of the patient with refractory epilepsy of the insular lobe and for that purpose several forms of investigation and treatment were developed. In this paper, we will discuss the characteristics and information regarding the pathology and gather data to identify and choose the best therapeutic option for each case.

Abstract:
The English language lesson scene in Shakespeare’s Henry V has attracted more critical attention for its sexual innuendoes than for its political significance even though King Henry was historically instrumental in the demise of French in medieval England. Closely modeled on early modern primers, the language lesson is a stage metaphor of the king’s language policy, and settles old ideological scores by canceling the effects of the Norman Conquest. Traces of insular French in Kate’s morphosyntactic idiosyncrasies serve the political agenda of a play chronicling the process that took the French tongue from authority to disempowerment. Abstract:
Across the Middle Ages, Continental French texts satirised the French spoken by Englishmen, with particular comic value attached to their alleged tendency unwittingly to use foutre and other obscene terms. Since the Anglophones’ jargon relies on grotesque parody of attested morpho-syntactical and phonological features of Insular French, this article assesses whether there may also be a lexical kernel of truth underlying the satire by exploring the frequency and context of occurrence of specific items of sexual vocabulary in Anglo-Norman texts, including fabliaux, comic monologues and dialogues, courtly narratives, manières de langage, word-lists and glosses, legal records, and medical writing.

Abstract:
Later Anglo-Norman is conventionally portrayed as moribund, isolated from the mainstream of French, and extensively calqued on English. This study demonstrates that in the evolution of indefinite pronouns and modifiers it followed medieval French syntax, allowing the indefinite aucun (“some”) to replace the polarity indefinite nul first in non-assertive and then in negative clauses. Administrative prose documents from England and Northern France attest these developments between 1250–1425, with a slight lag in the insular context consistent with a wave model of the spread of change. The direction of change, in which a positive indefinite spread to other contexts, was unrelated to the patterns of indefinite expressions in Middle English, supporting the view that later Anglo-Norman was largely grammatically independent, not a learner variety heavily influenced by an English substrate.

Abstract:
This article argues that France’s conquest and subsequent legal treatment of Algeria as an integral part of France, though without French citizenship for Algerians, served as a transnational precedent for US incorporation of former Spanish colonies in the early twentieth century. While the United States also drew lessons from British colonial policy, as scholarship has shown, France’s republican empire offered particular tools, which scholars have not studied, for US courts to designate Filipinos and Puerto Ricans like French Algerians. In essence, French Algeria provided an example for US jurists to create an imperial category for new territorial peoples as neither US citizens nor foreign subjects but as “nationals.” The article draws principally on the so-called Insular Cases, US newspapers, and political documents. The article exposes transnational connections between the United States and France in constructing empires of white freedom, no less important than imagined Anglo-Saxonism at the time.

Abstract:
Abstract In the French outermost regions, the rise of the cultural and creative industries as a lever for economic development has attracted growing interest in recent years. In Guadeloupe, a political will to support the film industry by setting up its own funding mechanism has been implemented, with 6 million euros invested between 2015 and 2020. Recent studies (2019-2021) have shown that the French outermost regions, which are far from the French decision-making center and have a narrow market, face structural challenges aggravated by a deficit of national public support for local independent production. The lack of financial support is accompanied by a lack of statistical data and a lack of visibility of the culture and identity of the French outermost regions in national channels. The latter play a decisive role in financing French audiovisual and cinematographic production by pre-purchasing works. In 2016, all the unions and associations of the audiovisual and cinematographic industry in the French outermost regions made a strong demand to the national level for the application of common law in the French outermost regions. In this chronicle of an announced “audiovisual and cinematographic content war”, what would be the assets of the independent production of French outermost regions? A review of recent studies allows us to present here the functioning of the public aid system for audiovisual and cinematographic in France. We then analyze two obstacles among others that limit access to national financing for local production in the French outermost regions. Finally, we present the case of Guadeloupe which, despite structural and financial constraints, has been able to attract large international productions through a strategy based on the local public authority.

Abstract:
Goats of an undefined breed (called UDB) from the State of Ceará, northeastern Brazil (N = 447), European Mediterranean goats (N = 3,847) and African Mediterranean goats (N = 325) were compared to establish genetic distances and taxonomic trees. Allelic frequencies in each population for presence or absence of the following traits were used: horns, reduced ears, long hair, wattles, beard, roan color, brown eumelanin and eumelanic standard pigmentation. The genetic distance, applying the method developed by Nei (1972), was: least between goats from different meso-regions of the State of Ceará (0.0008 to 0.0120); small between all UDB of Ceará and French goats of Rove and Haute Roya (0.0236 and 0.0459); greater between all UDB of Ceará and northern Spanish goats (0.1166), and greatest between all UDB of Ceará and northern African goats (Moroccan of Drâa, Rhâali and Zagora), Balkan goats (Sakhar from Bulgaria and Macedonia from Greece) and some insular Mediterranean populations (Corsica, Sicily and Sardinia), which ranged from 0.1237 to 0.2714. Brazilian UDB goats are more closely related to Continental and Western European populations than to North African, Balkan or Insular Mediterranean populations.

Abstract:

This dissertation introduces the remix as an interpretive framework for the analysis of medieval texts and demonstrates its value as a new approach to understanding even well-studied texts. Breaking the process of remixing down into three composite processes—aggregation, compilation, and renarration—allows the reader to examine a given text as the cumulative effect of a series of actions taken by known or unknown remixers. Doing so in turn allows for new readings based on previously un- or under-explored alterations, completions, and juxtapositions present within the text or its physical or generic contexts, or embedded within its processes of textual production. This dissertation presents four case studies that show the usefulness of this approach in regard to (1) the physical and textual construction of the Junius manuscript; (2) the conventions of the ‘encomium urbis’ genre and the meaning of ‘home’ in Old English poetry; (3) King Leir narratives and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as forms of history writing; and (4) various contextualizations of Grendel, the antagonist from the poem Beowulf

Teissier, Yoann. "Metapopulation dynamics of dengue epidemics in French Polynesia." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCB008.

Full text
Abstract:
Dengue has been epidemic in French Polynesia for the past 35 years. Despite the relatively small population size in French Polynesia, dengue does not disappear and can persist at low levels for many years. In light of the large number of islands comprising French Polynesia, this thesis addresses the extent to which a metapopulation context may be the most appropriate to describe the epidemiology and persistence of dengue in this case. After compiling a database of dengue cases over the last 35 years, we used a number of descriptive and statistical epidemiological analyses that revealed distinct spatio-temporal disparity in dengue incidence for archipelago and islands. But the global structure of the epidemics of the same serotype were not affected. Metapopulation analyses revealed asynchronous dengue incidence among many of the islands and most notably larger islands lagged behind the smaller islands. The critical community size, which determines dengue persistence, was found to exceed even the largest island of Tahiti, suggesting that dengue can only exist by island-hopping. Incorporation of island connectedness through patterns of human migration into a mathematical model enabled a much better fit to the observed data than treating the population as a whole. The metapopulation model was able to capture to some extent the epidemic and low level transmission dynamics observed for the period of 2001-2008. Further analyses on differentiating incidence of disease and infection will likely prove informative for the metapopulation model of dengue epidemiology in French Polynesia

Berry, Anne-Catherine. Thesis, Antilles, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017ANTI0174/document.

Abstract:
The French West Indies constructs a context which has to be apprehended from different characteristics: a geological and geographical approach, as well as a historical, economic, geopolitical, ethnic, linguistic, cultural and magico-religious approach. A resonance emanates from this place which is felt in the plastic arts: fragment and incompleteness. The approaches of six artists involved in this study subscribe to this insular context. They transpose into their works, according to different modalities, the problems that concern the French West Indies archipelago. Three artists from Guadeloupe: Michel Rovelas, Christian Bracy, François Piquet, and three artists from Martinique: Ernest Breleur, Christian Bertin, Chantal Charron, are studied, and their work analyzed according to their plastic arts, iconic, procedural and semantic information. These plastic artists, who take liberties with respect to the traditional codes of representation, abandon the principle of imitation of reality. They favor an aesthetic of “the fragment” whose generator is “la blès” (wound), the unfathomable historical wound. The archipelagic body, with an insular structure is the object and the subject of expression. It is the metaphorical figure of the Creole world. These “searchers of existence”1 perform a work of memory and identity whose foundations lie in an accumulation of tragic and disturbing facts: slave trade, slavery, the colonial period and departmentalization. It is therefore an incomplete memory that art tends to grasp

Abstract:
This study addresses the titled "The Quest for identity in the francophone postcolonial novel : Comparative approach of African literatures, island, north African and Caribbean. Broken glass case Alain Mabanckou, Ananda Devi Sigh, The Other Dancing Dracius Suzanne and The Sacred Night Tahar Ben Jelloun". It proposes to identify the various ways in which the quest for identity itself as privileged material of the structure of the four novels narrative. Party of the question: what does theliterature, we intend to demonstrate that the quest for identity is distinguished as the central motif in the composition of francophone postcolonial novel?. The choice for these four writers based on the desire to show the romantic theme of the operation of the search for identity. Indeed, applied to the internal dynamics of stories that structure the stories, the quest for identity emerges as the issue that crosses the writing of francophone postcolonial novel, especially in the writing of Alain Mabanckou, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Ananda Devi and Suzanne Dracius. By scientific standards, this study is divided into three areas. First historiographical axis. It attaches to a fairly simple understanding of the concepts of this study and illustrate the different facets in literary history. Then poetic axis where analytical. He has the title of "figures of the search for identity." It is striving to show how the pattern of the search for identity unfolds in the corpus. The third axis hermeneutic or interpretation undertaking further analysis and carry a number of interrogation on the concepts covered in the analytical sequence

Abstract:
The doctoral thesis compares the style of the “Romance of Horn”, “King Horn”, and “Horn Childe and Maiden Rimnild”. Each of them is a different version of the same story; the first is an Insular French romance, the second and third are Middle English romances. The stylistic analysis is both quantitative and qualitative, and it is developed employing the lemmatized edition of each witness of each version. The work begins with an introduction to the concept of style. The first chapter focuses on a review of the literature regarding each version, considering specifically the witnesses and textual criticism, metre and genre, language, date, and style. For the Insular French version, a specific review of the literature about the author is offered. The second chapter introduces stylometry and stylistic analysis with a brief literature review. Then, the protocols for the edition and lemmatization of each witness are described. Finally, the methods adopted for the stylistic analysis are explained. The third chapter develops the study of descriptions, anaphors, and formulas in each version. The collected data and their interpretations are considered altogether through the lens of a group of theoretical concepts: connotation, attribution, horizon of expectations and discursive tradition. Via these concepts, a trajectory of stylistic mutations is traced, and a link between style and socio-cultural context is displayed. The conclusions sum up all the information and inferences, suggesting further possibilities for new research.

Abstract: Diabetes adversely affects prostate morphology and function through alterations in the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-gonadal axis. Thus, the aims of this study were to characterize morphological, proliferative and immunological features of the prostate of diabetic mice after long term glycemic control and hormonal replacement, and as well as to relate these parameters to prostate pathogenesis. A total of 40 mice Nod (Non-obese diabetic) and 8 control mice (BALB/c/Uni), 18 weeks old, were divided into six groups after 20 days of diabetes: the control group received a daily dose of 0.9% NaCl (5 mL/kg, s.c.) for 20 days, as did the diabetic group. The diabetic-insulin group received daily doses of NPH insulin (4-5 IU, s.c.), the diabetic-testosterone group received a supraphysiological dose of testosterone cypionate (5 mg/kg, s.c.) every other day for 20 days, the diabetic-estrogen group received a supraphysiological dose of 17ß-estradiol (25 µg/kg, s.c.) every other day for 20 days and the diabetic-insulin-testosterone-estrogen group received insulin, testosterone and estrogen, simultaneously, at the same concentrations given to the other groups. The mice were sacrificed after 20 days of treatment and samples from the prostatic ventral lobe were processed for morphological, morphometrical, immunological, western blotting and hormonal analyses. The results showed structural disorganization and diminished adhesion proteins, a and b dystroglycans, which were more intense in the diabetic group than in the other groups. The diabetic state showed a proliferation and apoptosis rate that was two times higher than that found in the control group. Also, there was a decrease in serum testosterone levels (diabetic mice and diabetic-insulin-testosteroneestrogen mice had the greatest and smallest decreases, respectively) and in the level of androgen receptor immunolocalization. The serum estrogen level and its receptor showed changes opposite to those of testosterone and its receptor. The greatest IGF receptor localization occurred in diabetic mice. Thus, it could be concluded that diabetes disturbed the prostatic hormonal balance and the stroma-epithelium interaction, leading to morphological and functional imbalance of this organ characterized by the decrease immunolocalization of the adhesion proteins. Concomitant treatment with insulin and steroid hormone therapy was determinative for glandular structural and hormonal restoration. Furthermore, the increased immunolocalization of IGF-1 suggested that diabetes may be an important factor to the mitogenic process. However, hormonal therapy did not restore the distribution of IGF-1 to normal. On the other hand, concomitant treatment with insulin and steroid hormone therapy showed partial recovery of the IGFR-1 levels. A proper understanding of the relationship between these two factors could improve the current therapies for treating prostate diseases as well as diagnostics.

O teste Kappa mostrou concordância satisfatória entre o índice TyG e a sensibilidade à insulina obtida a partir do clamp (k = 0,4; p = 0,009).
Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the relationship of the TyG index with the metabolic syndrome components and other anthropometric and biochemical markers related to cardiometabolic risk, and as an indicator of insulin resistance by hyperglycemic clamp in adolescents with different levels of adiposity and pubertal stages. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional multicenter study. There were evaluated 835 adolescents aged 10-19 years (489 girls, mean 15.1 ± 2.4 years and 346 boys, mean 14.7 ± 2.4 years). There were performed anthropometric, body composition and biochemistry measurements. The pubertal stage was obtained through self-assessment, and blood pressure by auscultation method. The insulin resistance was assessed by TyG index, HOMA2-IR and hyperglycemic clamp (n = 42). The correlation between two variables was assessed by partial correlation coefficient adjusted for pubertal stage. In the analysis between the TyG index and the hyperglycemic clamp, there were analyzed: chi-square (X2), Kappa (k), ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve, areas under the curve (AUC), confidence intervals of 95% (CI95%) and determined the cut-off point for the TyG index to diagnose insulin resistance. Results: In both genders, the TyG index correlated positively with waist circumference (r = 0.30 female and r = 0.41 male; p<0.001), systolic blood pressure (r = 0.18, p<0.001 female and r = 0.13, p = 0.03 male) and diastolic (r = 0.20, p<0.001 female and r = 0.16, p = 0.005 male) and with the HOMA2-IR index (r = 0.36 female and r = 0.45 male, p<0.001), and negatively with HDL-cholesterol (r = -0.21 female and r = -0.41 male, p<0.001). There were observed inverse correlation between the clamp with TyG index (r = -0.55, p<0.001) and with the HOMA2-IR index (r = -0.33, p = 0.03). There was observed significant association between the presence of decreased insulin sensitivity measured by clamp and increased insulin resistance according to the TyG index (X2 = 6.7, p = 0.009). The Kappa test showed satisfactory agreement between the TyG index and insulin sensitivity obtained from the clamp (k = 0.4, p = 0.009). The TyG index showed good performance to identify insulin resistance (AUC = 0.72, p = 0.02). Considering patients with TyG index above the 90th percentile as insulin-resistant subjects, there was found a threshold value for insulin resistance of 4.47. Conclusion: The TyG index is a valid tool to estimate the degree of insulin resistance and changes in the metabolic syndrome components and cardiometabolic risk factors in adolescents, having been validated with the hyperglycemic clamp

Abstract:
This first English translation of Le Roman de Waldef makes a significant representative of the French literature of medieval England accessible for the first time. Its wide-ranging content provides an ideal introduction to a number of themes in medieval literature, making it suitable for a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses. The fast-moving romance plot of this early thirteenth-century tale recounts the ancestry and exploits of Waldef and his two sons, set against a history of pre-Conquest England. The narrative shares themes and incident types with other important insular romances, including the Lai of Haveloc, Boeve de Haumtone, and Gui de Warewic. Waldef’s scope, interest in battle, and political stratagems bear reading alongside medieval chronicles, while secret love affairs connect it with other romance literature of the period, and adventures across a wide area of the known world provide affinities with medieval travel narrative.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the use of multiple languages, and particularly the co-existence of English and French items, in one and the same codex, focusing on miscellanies from the 13th to the 15th centuries. It argues that the question of whether scribes mixed French and English texts in manuscript miscellanies depended not just on chronology but also on the types of text they copied. To substantiate this case, I compare the situation of romances, which rarely circulated with French-language companions in manuscript, with those of lyrics, which mixed freely with French lyrics. The association of the lyric with francophone culture explains why English and French lyrics continued to be copied alongside each other in medieval manuscripts.

Abstract:
After a brief discussion of the ‘miscellany’, this chapter considers the interaction in their manuscript context of some of the texts copied in or around Ludlow by the ‘Harley scribe’. A brief survey of the kinds of literature in the langue d’oïl copied by Italian scribes then precedes the examination of a bilingual Arthurian manuscript in which one of the scribes switches from French to Italian and back again. The chapter concludes by looking at the work of a scribe called Johannes Jacobi from Verona, who copies texts in French, Occitan, Italian, and Latin. Both the Harley scribe and Johannes Jacobi reflect the narrower interests of their time and place, as well as a corpus of literature in the langue d’oïl that has a universal appeal transcending local contexts.

Abstract:
Although, as Winford (2003) states, ‘There are in principle no limits […] to what speakers of different languages will adopt and adapt from one another’, it is generally accepted that open class items such as nouns and verbs are more easily borrowed than closed class items, such as pronouns, which are generally considered to be embedded at a ‘deeper’ level of the linguistic system. This chapter presents a case study of four different varieties of Gallo-Romance spoken in Mainland and Insular Normandy, which are in contact with two different superstrates, respectively French and English. It explores whether contact with its typologically different superstrates is causing change within the pronominal systems of Mainland and Insular Norman. Specifically, it examines whether we find ‘pronoun sharing’ (where borrowed surface forms are integrated ‘wholesale’ into the Norman utterance) or ‘pronoun sparing’ (where, despite the intensive contact, the pronouns of Norman remain ‘intact’).

Abstract:
The model that is being implemented from 1960 onward has, among other features, the novelty and disruption that can be expected in view of the typical tourist developments of the time, more concerned with a rapid return on investment than the deterioration of the landscape caused by its construction. Meanwhile, in the distant Lanzarote a unique model is voted to sparkle tourism, prioritizing and safeguarding its natural and cultural resources in the construction of the territory in which a particular esthetical projection is recognized on the scale of the island inspired by the artist César Manrique. The creative process explains both questions, their particular configuration, the steps taken and tools used, and its artistic expression, the filter set by Manrique to mediate between tourism and landscape and to recognize its values.

Abstract:
The overall objective of the current proposal is to develop procedures to improve the pregnancy rate achieved following transfer of fresh or cryopreserved embryos produced in the laboratory into heat-stress recipients. The overall hypothesis is that pregnancy rate in heat-stressed lactating cows can be improved by use of embryo transfer and that additional gains in pregnancy rate can be achieved through development of procedures to cryopreserve embryos, select embryos most likely to establish and maintain pregnancy after transfer, and to enhance embryo competence for post-transfer survival through manipulation of culture conditions. The original specific objectives were to 1) optimize procedures for cryopreservation (Israel/US), 2) develop procedures for identifying embryos with the greatest potential for development and survival using the remote monitoring system called EmbryoGuard (Israel), 3) perform field trials to test the efficacy of cryopreservation and the EmbryoGuard selection system for improving pregnancy rates in heat-stressed, lactating cows (US/Israel), 4) test whether selection of fresh or frozen-thawed blastocysts based on measurement of group II caspase activity is an effective means of increasing survival after cryopreservation and post-transfer pregnancy rate (US), and 5) identify genes in blastocysts induced by insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) (US). In addition to these objectives, additional work was carried out to determine additional cellular determinants of embryonic resistance to heat shock. There were several major achievements. Results of one experiment indicated that survival of embryos to freezing could be improved by treating embryos with cytochalasin B to disrupt the cytoskeleton. An additional improvement in the efficacy of embryo transfer for achieving pregnancy in heat-stressed cows follows from the finding that IGF-1 can improve post-transfer survival of in vitro produced embryos in the summer but not winter. Expression of several genes in the blastocyst was regulated by IGF-1 including IGF binding protein-3, desmocollin II, Na/K ATPase, Bax, heat shock protein 70 and IGF-1 receptor. These genes are likely candidates 1) for developing assays for selection of embryos for transfer and 2) as marker genes for improving culture conditions for embryo production. The fact that IGF-1 improved survival of embryos in heat-stressed recipients only is consistent with the hypothesis that IGF-1 confers cellular thermotolerance to bovine embryos. Other experiments confirmed this action of IGF-1. One action of IGF-1, the ability to block heat-shock induced apoptosis, was shown to be mediated through activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase pathway. Other cellular determinants of resistance of embryos to elevated temperature were identified including redox status of the embryo and the ceramide signaling pathway. Developmental changes in embryonic apoptosis responses in response to heat shock were described and found to include alterations in the capacity of the embryo to undergo caspase-9 and caspase-3 activation as well as events downstream from caspase-3 activation. With the exception of IGF-1, other possible treatments to improve pregnancy rate to embryo transfer were not effective including selection of embryos for caspase activity, treatment of recipients with GnRH.and bilateral transfer of twin embryos. In conclusion, accomplishments achieved during the grant period have resulted in methods for improving post-transfer survival of in vitro produced embryos transferred into heat-stressed cows and have lead to additional avenues for research to increase embryo resistance to elevated temperature and improve survival to cryopreservation. In addition, embryo transfer of vitrified IVF embryos increased significantly the pregnancy rate in repeated breeder cows.
