Abstract:
Biological macromolecules are becoming increasingly important as a target for pharmaceutical research. Structural examination of this class of compounds is vital, both in terms of understanding the three-dimensional structures these molecules form as well as for quality control of bio-pharmaceutical products. UV polarised spectroscopy, such as circular dichroism (CD) is a powerful tool for this form of analysis, rapidly providing the user with structural information on the sample. The ease of data analysis combined with its non-destructive nature make UV polarised spectroscopy an ideal tool for this purpose. However, limitations in the current instrumentation, especially in terms of sample handling have placed significant barriers in the way of fully realising the potential of these techniques. To address the weaknesses of the currently available UV polarised spectroscopy accessories, new devices have been designed and tested to increase the utility of such techniques. A low volume capillary sample holder has been developed which significantly reduces the sample requirements for circular dichroism without loss of signal quality. This advance has been coupled with an HPLC auto-sampler to create a device that can process 96-well and in some cases 384- well plates. This device opens up a host of new applications for polarised UV spectroscopy, including refolding screening as well as freeing up user time. Additionally, a high precision demountable micro scale cuvette has been developed that reproducibly assembles to the same path length every time. The percentage error of path-length for this new cuvette is of the same order as currently commercially available 1 mm cuvettes. This new accessory should prove highly advantageous for the bio-pharmaceutical industry, as it allows accurate path-length CD analysis for high concentration samples. Additionally, the first confirmed linear dichroism (LD) spectrum of a bacterium and flagella are reported, opening up the potential for real time UV spectroscopic analysis of living bacteria. By using the work contained within this thesis, it should be possible to construct a new form of high path-length accuracy, low volume, multiple-sample UV polarised spectroscopy accessory that could be used for both CD and LD analysis.

The fire department depends on the fire apparatus to support the many roles firefighters fulfill in the community. The instrument panel of the fire apparatus is the primary man-machine interface for controlling the vehicle. The instrument panel contains many gauges and controls for the numerous features of the apparatus. This research reflects the investigation of how the fire apparatus instrument panel is used by the Atlanta Fire Department. Research involves an immersive study observing the Atlanta firefighters. Surveys and a design critique were developed to obtained firefighter feedback. A comparison of similar tasks was completed to Based on the feedback from fire apparatus drivers and captains design concepts were developed. Concepts are desiged to help the driver and the captain of the apparatus.

Abstract:
Vibrations in machines increase friction on moving parts which cause chafing that will tear down the fabric of the machine components when given time, thus monitoring and analysis of machine vibrations are important for preventive maintenance. Vibration analysis utilizes time domain as well as frequency domain analysis for which there have been analog solutions for quite some time. This work has been about moving a predominantly analog mixed signal system onto an FPGA and making it mostly digital. Vibration analysis on an FPGA have its own challenges and benefits compared to other methods. The inherent parallelism of the FPGA makes it suitable for high performance signal analysis. This report shows through two proof-of-concept solutions that the translation of a predominantly analog system is viable, economic and can deliver improved performance. The two solutions have utilized two different units from Xilinx, the Spartan-6 FPGA and the Zynq-7000 system on chip FPGA. The solution implemented on Spartan-6 produces a result in 9.32 ms and the other implementation based on Zynq-7000 produces a result in 9.39 ms, which is more than a 10-fold increase in performance of the current system. The results obtained show that both solutions can perform the calculations for the proof of concept within 20% of the allotted time. Costs of both solutions as well as other qualities of each solution are presented in this paper.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigated Internet search tools / engines to identify desirable features that can be used as a benchmark or standard to evaluate web search engines. In the past, the Internet was thought of as a big spider's web, ultimately connecting all the bits of information. It has now become clear that this is not the case, and that the bow tie analogy is more accurate. This analogy suggests that there is a central core of well-connected pages, with links IN and OUT to other pages, tendrils and orphan pages. This emphasizes the importance of selecting a search tool that is well connected and linked to the central core. Searchers must take into account that not all search tools search the Invisible Web and this will reflect on the search tool selected. Not all information found on the Web and Internet is reliable, current and accurate, and Web information must be evaluated in terms of authority, currency, bias, purpose of the Web site, etc. Different kinds of search tools are available on the Internet, such as search engines, directories, library gateways, portals, intelligent agents, etc. These search tools were studied and explored. A new categorization for online search tools consisting of Intelligent Agents, Search Engines, Directories and Portals / Hubs is suggested. This categorization distinguishes the major differences between the 21 kinds of search tools studied. Search tools / engines consist of spiders, crawlers, robots, indexes and search tool software. These search tools can be further distinguished by their scope, internal or external searches and whether they search Web pages or Web sites. Most search tools operate within a relationship with other search tools, and they often share results, spiders and databases. This relationship is very dynamic. The major international search engines have identifiable search features. The features of Google, Yahoo, Lycos and Excite were studied in detail. Search engines search for information in different ways, and present their results differently. These characteristics are critical to the Recall/Precision ratio. A well-planned search strategy will improve the Precision/Recall ratio and consider the web-user capabilities and needs. Internet search tools/engines is not a panacea for all information needs, and have pros and cons. The Internet search tool evaluation instrument was developed based on desirable features of the major search tools, and is considered a benchmark or standard for Internet search tools. This instrument, applied to three South African search tools, provided insight into the capabilities of the local search tools compared to the benchmark suggested in this study. The study concludes that the local search engines compare favorably with the major ones, but not enough so to use them exclusively. Further research into this aspect is needed. Intelligent agents are likely to become more popular, but the only certainty in the future of Internet search tools is change, change, and change.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie het Internetsoekinstrumente/-enjins ondersoek met die doel om gewenste eienskappe te identifiseer wat as 'n standaard kan dien om soekenjins te evalueer. In die verlede is die Internet gesien as 'n groot spinnerak, wat uiteindelik al die inligtingsdeeltjies verbind. Dit het egter nou duidelik geword dat dit glad nie die geval is nie, en dat die strikdas analogie meer akkuraat is. Hierdie soekinstrumente kan verder onderskei word deur hulle omvang, interne of eksterne soektogte en of hulle op Webbladsye of Webruimtes soek. Die meeste soekinstrumente werk in verhouding met ander soekinstrumente, en hulle deel dikwels resultate, spinnekoppe en databasisse. Hierdie verhouding is baie dinamies. Die hoof internasionale soekenjins het soekeienskappe wat identifiseerbaar is. Die eienskappe van Google, Yahoo en Excite is in besonderhede bestudeer. Abstract:
The proposal of this thesis project is an exploration of the relationship between music and the built space. The space chosen for design is the first two floors of the Lady Byrd Hat factory located at 140 Virginia St. in the Shockoe Slip area of Richmond, VA. This project proposes the design of the building for the purposes of a music center that will benefit the community by providing music therapy, music and vocal classes, a performance space, and a café. It is to be used as an instrument for communication, health, and education. The main users of the space are music educators, music therapists, music ensembles, students, patients, and audience members of performances. I began by studying the history of the building, evaluating the site, and studying the architecture of the building. I conducted a series of conditional studies based on the architecture of the building to analyze the form. I evaluated the structure, symmetry/ balance, geometry, entrances, levels, stairs, ramps, angles, and circulation of the building. Then I studied the building according to light/ dark, public/ private, loud/ quiet, warm/ cool, large space/ small space. Creating a series of concept models helped me to understand the building with its strong dissection of columns, circulation, usable areas, rhythm, and repetition. The development of a program for users' needs, square footage, and special design considerations for each area led to a series of floor plans. I then began arranging the usable areas within the building according to each areas design needs. After a study of musical instruments, I began conceptual drawings of the space. The design of the space evokes imagery of the built forms of instruments and the details they hold.

This thesis presents several works involving robotic musical instruments. Robots have long been used in industry for performing repetitive tasks, or jobs requiring superhuman strength. However, more recently robots have found a niche as musical instruments. The works presented here attempt to address the musicality of these instruments, their use in various settings, and the relationship of a robotic instrument to its human player in terms of mapping and translating gesture to sound. The primary project, The Chandelier, addresses both hardware and software issues, and builds directly from experience with two other works, The Marshall Field's Flower Show and Jeux Deux. The Marshall Field's Flower Show is an installation for several novel musical instruments and controllers. Presented here is a controller and mapping system for a Yamaha Disklavier player piano that allows for real-time manipulation of musical variations on famous compositions. The work is presented in the context of the exhibit, but also discussed in terms of its underlying software and technology. Jeux Deux is a concerto for hyperpiano, orchestra, and live computer graphics.
(cont.) The software and mapping schema for this piece are presented in this thesis as a novel method for live interaction, in which a human player duets with a computer controlled player piano. Results are presented in the context of live performance. The Chandelier is the culmination of these past works, and presents a full-scale prototype of a new robotic instrument. This instrument explores design methodology, interaction, and the relationship-and disconnect-of a human player controlling a robotic instrument. The design of hardware and software, and some mapping schema are discussed and analyzed in terms of playability, musicality, and use in public installation and individual performance. Finally, a proof-of-concept laser harp is presented as a low-cost alternative musical controller. This controller is easily constructed from off-the-shelf parts. It is analyzed in terms of its sensing abilities and playability.

Abstract:
Real-time digital music system design often involves the translation of formal music notation or human gestures by some input device to Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) commands which are then transmitted to an electronic music synthesizer. This thesis describes the design and implementation of a microprocessor controlled input device that maps analog signals to MIDI commands and transmits them to a digital synthesizer in real time. The controller emulates a traditional acoustic folk instrument known as a hammer dulcimer. The hammer dulcimer is the forerunner of the keyboard family of instruments and incorporates features found in percussive and keyboard instruments. As with any acoustic instrument, its tone is a composite of several partial tones. The controller, in emulation mode, generates the fundamental tone and optionally outputs the partials tones with the just noticeable difference (JND) tolerances described in psychoacoustic research. This feature allows the designer to experiment with the timbre of the fundamental tome. The controller interface succeeds in capturing the gestural movements and translating these events to MIDI commands. It also provides features such as on-demand retuning which allows the musician to play in any tonal center without changing hand positions. Selected MIDI features such as the pitch bend, program change and sustain are implemented by the controller. The prototype instrument yields a tow octave range from an eight by eight inch sensor grid. Additional grids can be added to increase the range of the instrument.

Abstract:
The always growing demands on the electronics design of modern electron microscopes cause increased requirements to the measurement tasks in the electronics development of these systems. In this thesis, we report the findings of designing noise measurements setup in Carl-Zeiss, Oberkochen. The aim of this thesis was to explore the design setup for noise measurement and to provide an interface which help us analyze these measurements using C# and agilent multimeter. This was achieved by the construction and evaluation of a prototype for a noise measurment application. For this purpose Design Science Research (DSR) was conducted, situated in the domain of noise measurement research. The results consist of a set of design principles expressing key aspects needed to address when designing noise measurement functionality. The artifacts derived from the development and evaluation process each one constitutes an example of how to design for noise measurement functionality of this kind.

Projektets mål var att utforma och konstruera ett mätinstrument för att upptäcka variationer i ljusintensitet. Uppdraget gavs av avdelningen för fasta tillståndets elektronik på Ångströmlaboratoriet i Uppsala. Instrumentets tänkta användningsområde är att undersöka om avdelningens testuppställningar för belysning av solceller levererar en homogen ljusintensitet. Genom att placera instrumentet på olika positioner under ljuskällan ska eventuella avvikelser i intensiteten kunna avläsas. Kraven på instrumentet var batteridrift och att det skulle vara handhållet. Vidare var det önskvärt att mätvärdet representerades med en analog visare, där mätintervallet skulle gå mellan 800 och 1200 W/m2. Efter litteraturstudier och informationssökning utfördes simuleringar i programmet LTSpice parallellt med prototypframtagning i lab. Instrumentet utformades med en fotodiod, vars ström omvandlas till en proportionell spänning via en transimpedansförstärkare. Denna spänning skalas sedan upp av ett differentialförstärkarsteg för att uppnå önskat intervall och känslighet. En konstant spänning subtraheras i differentialsteget för att mätaren ska ge utslag först över 800 W/m2. Spänningen läggs till sist över en analog amperemeter. I och med fotodiodens förmåga att ge ström proportionell mot ljusintensiteten erhölls linjära samband genom hela kretsen. Projektet kunde inte slutföras inom tidsramen då varken kretskort eller hölje hann konstrueras. En fullt fungerande prototyp på kopplingsdäck blev dock klar. Vidare är alla beräkningar och komponentval gjorda och dokumenterade i rapporten. Med andra ord borde instrumentet utan problem kunna konstrueras utifrån denna rapport.

Abstract:
This is an interdisciplinary research project in which the methods of Industrial and Product Design Engineering are focused upon a problem in Orthopaedics. One of the most controversial areas in Orthopaedics is the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The current twin-instrument method for locating the ACL is difficult for surgeons with fewer than 500 surgical experiences. This was clearly demonstrated by Kohn, Busche and Cans (1995), and confirmed by Sommer, Friederich and Muller (2000), Sudhahar, Glasgow and Donell (2004), and Kuga, Yasuda, Hata et al. (2004). The above research indicates that the problem is not only one of anatomical location, but of how the operation takes place. The aim of the research was, therefore, to develop a new and improved surgical instrument and technique for locating the ACL anatomical landmarks. The research described in this thesis employs a number of design methods that can be used separately or in combination (hybrid process). They form the theory base that guides the design process. This allows the designer to engage in a flexible process that is effective in finding design solutions to the problem. Within this process, iterative case studies were employed in order to design a new surgical device for ACL reconstruction. The thesis describes a series of designed devices (case studies) that were iteratively developed and surgically tested, leading to a penultimate device. This latter device was tested via a number of surgical operations. The device provides a new method for externally locating the internal ACL attachment points. The research has resulted in a commercial association with Smith and Nephew Surgical Australia and BrainLAB AG Germany for the commercialisation of this technique. At the time of writing, the next stage of research and development is under way. This is using a frameless computer-aided image guidance system in the place of X-ray.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the viability of two different mappings of two parameters of the digital musical instrument Force Ghost. The instrument produces sound by having an  ambience (a recording of rain or of waves on the beach) filtered by bandpass filters  whose center-frequencies are controlled by a midi-keyboard. Five bandpass filters are assigned to each note, corresponding to the fundamental frequency its and its multiples (2f,3f,4f,5f). The mapped parameters are the Q-factor of the bandpass filters and the timbre, defined as the relative level between the even and odd multiples harmonics. These two parameters are mapped to the modulation wheel and the pitch bend wheel. The mappings of the parameters are investigated with the help of musical tasks completed by musicians rounded up with semi-structured interviews. The interviews revealed that the modulation wheel was to be prefered due to the lack of a spring mechanism (which is an attribute of the pitch bend wheel), forcing the wheel back to its default position (in the middle) when released. The results from the musical tasks suggested an indication that none of the sensors have better controllability than the other, regardless of parameter it controls. In conclusion, a sensor that gravitates towards a resting state does not seem to be suitable to control a parameter (scaling) that lacks a “resting value” (as perceived by musicians).
Denna artikel utreder två mappningar av två parametrar hos det digitala musikaliska instrumentet Force Ghost. Instrumentet ljuder genom att en ljudkälla filtreras av bandpassfilter. Ljudkällan i detta fall är ljudet av regnfall i en skog. Varje tangent på ett keyboard är kopplat till minst ett bandpassfilter, vars MIDI-not kopplat till motsvarande frekvens. Denna frekvens är bandpassfiltrets centerfrekvens. När en tangent nedtrycks genereras bandpassfiltret, vilket skapar en ton ur ljudkällan. De två parametrarna i fokus är kopplade till bandpassfiltrerna. De är Q-värdet (kopplat till bandpassfiltrernas bandbredd) och klangfärgen (kopplat till övertonerna; vilka de är och deras amplitudrelation för varje not). Dessa två parametrar är mappade till modulations-hjulet och pitchbend-hjulet. Mappningen av dessa parametrar är undersökt genom musikuppgifter och självständig utforskning genomförda av musiker. Detta spelades in och sedan utfördes en semistrukturerad intervju med musikerna. Intervjuerna visade att modulations-hjulet föredrogs på grund av avsaknaden av fjädermekanismen som finns hos pitchbend-hjulet. Denna mekanism tvingar pitchbend-hjulet tillbaka till sin utgångsposition (i mitten) när den släpps. Resultaten från musikuppgifterna indikerar att ingen av sensorerna har bättre kontrollbarhet än den andre, oavsett vilket parameter den kontrollerar. Sammanfattningsvis, en sensor som graviterar mot ett viloläge verkar inte vara lämplig för att kontrollera en parameter (-skalning) som saknar ett “vilovärde” (så som uppfattat av musiker).

Abstract:
Neutral gas pressure measurements in low Earth orbit (LEO) can facilitate the monitoring of atmospheric gravity waves, which can trigger instabilities that severely disrupt radio frequency communication signals. The Space Neutral Pressure Instrument (SNeuPI) is a low-power instrument detecting neutral gas density in order to determine neutral gas pressure. SNeuPI consists of an ionization chamber and a logarithmic electrometer circuit. The Rev. 1 SNeuPI electrometer prototype does not function as designed. A Rev. 2 electrometer circuit must be designed and its performance characterized across specified operating temperature and input current ranges. This document presents a design topology for the Rev. 2 electrometer and a derivation of the theoretical circuit transfer function. Component selection and layout are discussed. A range of predicted operating input currents is calculated using modeled neutral density data for a range of local times, altitudes, and latitudes corresponding to the conditions expected for the Lower Atmosphere/Ionosphere Coupling Experiment (LAICE) CubeSat mission. Laboratory test setups for measurements performed both under vacuum and at atmospheric pressure are documented in detail. Test procedures are presented to characterize the performance of the Rev. 2 electrometer at a range of controlled operating temperatures. The results of these tests are then extrapolated in order to predict the operation of the circuit at specified temperatures outside of the range controllable under laboratory test conditions. The logarithmic conformance, accuracy, sensitivity, power consumption, and deviations from expected response of the circuit are characterized. The results validate the electrometer for use under its expected flight conditions.

The Large Ultraviolet/Optical/Infrared Surveyor (LUVOIR) is one of four large mission concepts currently undergoing community study for consideration by the 2020 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey. LUVOIR is being designed to pursue an ambitious program of exoplanetary discovery and characterization, cosmic origins astrophysics, and planetary science. The LUVOIR study team is investigating two large telescope apertures (9- and 15-meter primary mirror diameters) and a host of science instruments to carry out the primary mission goals. Many of the exoplanet, cosmic origins, and planetary science goals of LUVOIR require high-throughput, imaging spectroscopy at ultraviolet (100 - 400 nm) wavelengths. The LUVOIR Ultraviolet Multi-Object Spectrograph, LUMOS, is being designed to support all of the UV science requirements of LUVOIR, from exoplanet host star characterization to tomography of circumgalactic halos to water plumes on outer solar system satellites. LUMOS offers point source and multi-object spectroscopy across the UV bandpass, with multiple resolution modes to support different science goals. The instrument will provide low (R = 8,000 - 18,000) and medium (R = 30,000 - 65,000) resolution modes across the far-ultraviolet (FUV: 100 - 200 nm) and near-ultraviolet (NUV: 200 - 400 nm) windows, and a very low resolution mode (R = 500) for spectroscopic investigations of extremely faint objects in the FUV. Imaging spectroscopy will be accomplished over a 3 x 1.6 arcminute field-of-view by employing holographically-ruled diffraction gratings to control optical aberrations, microshutter arrays (MSA) built on the heritage of the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), advanced optical coatings for high-throughput in the FUV, and next generation large-format photon-counting detectors. The spectroscopic capabilities of LUMOS are augmented by an FUV imaging channel (100 - 200nm, 13 milliarcsecond angular resolution, 2 x 2 arcminute field-of-view) that will employ a complement of narrow-and medium-band filters. The instrument definition, design, and development are being carried out by an instrument study team led by the University of Colorado, Goddard Space Flight Center, and the LUVOIR Science and Technology Definition Team. LUMOS has recently completed a preliminary design in Goddard's Instrument Design Laboratory and is being incorporated into the working LUVOIR mission concept. In this proceeding, we describe the instrument requirements for LUMOS, the instrument design, and technology development recommendations to support the hardware required for LUMOS. We present an overview of LUMOS' observing modes and estimated performance curves for effective area, spectral resolution, and imaging performance. Example "LUMOS 100-hour Highlights" observing programs are presented to demonstrate the potential power of LUVOIR's ultraviolet spectroscopic capabilities.

The thesis presents a perceptual approach to audio-visual instrument design, composition and performance. The approach informs practical work as well as a parametric visualisation model, which can be used to analyse sensory dominance, sonic expression and spatial presence in any audio-visual performance language. The practical work intends for the image to function as a stage scene, which reacts to the music and allows for attention to focus on the relation between the sounds themselves. This is challenging, because usually vision dominates over audition. To clarify the problem, the thesis extrapolates from audio-visual theory, psychology, neuroscience, interaction design and musicology. The investigations lead to three creative principles, which inform the design of an instrument that combines a custom zither and audio-visual 3D software. The instrument uses disparities between the acoustic and digital outputs so as to explore those creative principles: a) to threshold the performerʼs control over the instrument and the instrumentʼs unpredictability, in ways that convey musical expression; b) to facilitate perceptual simplification of visual dynamics; c) to create an audio-visual relationship that produces a sense of causation, and simultaneously confounds the cause and effect relationships. This latter principle is demonstrated with a study on audio-visual mapping and perception, whose conclusions are equally applicable to the audio-visual relationship in space. Yet importantly, my creative decisions are not driven by demonstrative aims. Regarding the visual dynamics, the initial creative work assures perceptual simplification, but the final work exposes a gray area that respects to how the audienceʼs attention might change over time. In any case, the parametric visualisation model can reveal how any audio-visual performance work might converge or diverge from these three creative principles. It combines parameters for interaction, sonic & visual dynamics, audio-visual relationship, physical performance setup and semantics. The parameters for dynamics and semantics reflect how stimuli inform attention at a particular timescale. The thesis uses the model to analyse a set of audio-visual performance languages, to represent my solo performance work from a creative perspective, and to visualise the workʼs versatility in collaboration with other musicians.

This dissertation describes the design and implementation of a microwave level measurement instrument for sensing the level of a substance inside a tank up to 10 m in height. A radar transceiver had to be designed to replace an acoustic sensor on an existing 4-20 mA loop powered ultrasonic instrument and had to be compatible with its on-board acoustic signal processing hardware. Specifications are developed for a pulsed radar architecture operating at 5.8 GHz with a bandwidth around 1 GHz and at a repetition frequency of 3.58 MHz.

The Lower Atmosphere/Ionosphere Coupling Experiment (LAICE) CubeSat mission includes the payload instruments that generate scientific data by interacting with the flight computer. The LAICE Instrument Interface Board (LIIB) is designed to interface with the payload instruments and the flight computer for efficient operation of the LAICE. The uplink command packet contains commands for regulating power supply to the payload instruments and for interfacing the peripheral, called the thermal knife, with the science instruments. The LIIB is responsible for interpreting these commands in order to execute the associated functions. The architecture of the LIIB is designed such that it not only takes into account all the requirements of the systems and instruments on the LAICE, but also ensures smooth flight data analysis at the ground station end. The approach taken to build the design makes the entire process intuitive and easier to debug. This thesis describes the design and development of the LIIB firmware, to ensure proper functioning of the LAICE. The firmware design is presented first, by initially defining the architecture based on the system requirements and progressing eventually to its development at the system level. End-to-end testing with the payload instruments and thermal knife setup verifies the operation of the LAICE LIIB firmware and electronics, thus qualifying the instrument for deployment within the LAICE.

This document outlines the development of a Design Log Instrument (DLI) intended for use in identifying moments of abstraction as evidence of STEM content knowledge transfer. Many theoretical approaches to explaining knowledge transfer are rooted in a belief that transfer occurs through knowledge abstraction (Reed, Ernst, & Banerji, 1974; Gick & Holyoak, 1980, 1983). The DLI prompts participants to be reflective during technological/engineering design activities. During the development of this instrument, a three-phase multiple case: embedded design was used. Three distinct Phases accommodated the collection and analysis of data necessary for this investigation: Phase 1: Pilot Case Study, Phase 2: Establishing Content Validity, and Phase 3: Establishing Construct Validity. During Phase 3, data from the DLI was collected at each of seven work sessions from two design teams each working through different engineering problems. At the end of Phase 3, a comparison of abstractions found in DLI responses and observation data (Audio/Video transcripts) indicated the extent to which the DLI independently reflected those abstractions revealed in observations (Audio/Video transcripts). Results of this comparison showed that the DLI has the potential to be 68% reliable to reveal abstracted knowledge. Further analysis of these findings showed ancillary correlations between the percent abstractions found per DLI reflective prompt and the percent abstractions found per T/E design phase. Specifically, DLI Reflective Prompts 2 and 3 correlate with T/E Design Phases 3 and 4 (58% and 76% respectively of the total abstractions) which deal with design issues related to investigating the problem and developing alternate solutions. DLI Reflective Prompts 4 and 5 correlate with T/E Design Phases 5 and 6 (22% and 24% respectively of total abstractions) which deal with design issues related to choosing a solution and developing a prototype. Findings also indicate that there are highs and lows of abstraction throughout the T/E design process. The implications of these highs and lows are that specific phases of the T/E design process can be targeted for research and instruction. By targeting specific T/E design phases, a researcher or instructor can increase the likelihood of fostering abstractions as evidence of STEM content knowledge transfer.

This increasingly popular musical instrument offers possibilities not available in an acoustic piano (outputting sound into headphones, utilizing sample libraries, recording, use of sheet music in digital form and more). From technical standpoint, it attempts to closely mimic the qualities of traditional instruments, both in its tactile feedback and sound quality. The aim of this work was to design a solution which would starkly differentiate from the very conservative classical design without being overly extravagant. The main focus is therefore on aspects of visual appearance, with emphasis on ergonomics, and an outline of the technical solution.

Background: Organisational culture refers to the way employees perceive, think and feel about their work and organisation, guiding their behaviours. The way community pharmacists perceive their work pressures, as well as organisational outcomes such as job satisfaction and commitment, turnover and performance may be influenced by organisational culture. However, there is little evidence of the link between organisational culture and community pharmacists’ perceptions of their workplace. Moreover, it is not possible to establish which outcomes can be linked to organisational culture, due to the lack of validated instruments capable of measuring aspects that are unique to community pharmacy. The aim of this study was to design and validate a questionnaire to measure organisational culture in community pharmacy in Great Britain. Methods of questionnaire design and testing: Qualitative interviews with 12 community pharmacists working in Greater Manchester and relevant literature were analysed to identify variables describing organisational culture in community pharmacy, informing the design of a new conceptual model. Survey items were drafted based on the conceptual model, and response categories for the questionnaire were chosen. Cognitive interviews established the content validity of the conceptual model and questionnaire. The questionnaire was then administered to a sample of community pharmacists in Great Britain (n=1000) obtained from the GPhC register of pharmacies. Factor analysis was conducted to validate the questionnaire and investigate its component structure. Inferential analysis was conducted to investigate differences in how community pharmacists perceived organisational culture. Results: Two-hundred-and-nine usable questionnaires were returned. Factor analysis revealed five dimensions comprising of 60 items. These dimensions are: Business and work configuration; Social relationships; Personal and professional development; Skills utilisation; and Environment and structures. The conceptual model was adjusted based on these dimensions and the items retained, describing how different variables interact to produce different cultures. The questionnaire demonstrated good psychometric properties, with high levels of validity and reliability. Findings from the questionnaire revealed differences in how community pharmacists perceived their cultures, suggesting different cultures: more positive ratings were associated with owners, pharmacists from ethnic backgrounds, and those working in independent pharmacies; more negative ratings were associated with relief pharmacists, white pharmacists, and pharmacists working in supermarket pharmacies. Discussion: Organisational culture influences the way individuals think and behave. Supportive cultures that facilitate workflow are paramount in shaping organisations’ professional image and determining its success. However, findings from the questionnaire indicate that the way community pharmacists perceive organisational culture varies, suggesting different organisational cultures. It is important for leaders to consider these differences and their impact on organisational outcomes. The validated conceptual model will be useful in future research by describing how different configurations produce different cultures. The questionnaire will allow the investigation of differences in how organisational culture is perceived in community pharmacy and their link to job outcomes, and identification of organisational variables which may be perceived as infrequent triggering change and guiding interventions to maximise positive outcomes, for both pharmacists and pharmacies.

The development of any spaceflight instrument involves a systematic, iterative process of design, testing, and validation. This ensures that the system developed will meet the needs of stakeholders while minimizing costs and risks. Here, the needs for a life-detection instrument targeting nucleic acids are identified, the objectives for that instrument are determined, and system engineering analysis is used to demonstrate that a Search for Extra-Terrestrial Genomes instrument would fulfill those objectives and is feasible for a rover mission. Additionally, we show our design and build process for a testbed to rapidly prototype SETG components and subsystems, which has successfully automated nucleic acid extraction, sequencer loading, and parts of library preparation. We also experiment with thermal simulations and conduct a sequencing test at Martian conditions, using a custom built thermal vacuum chamber system. Finally, this thesis explores potential avenues for future development and identifies short term and long term engineering goals that would assist the SETG team in developing an instrument prototype.

Traditional design of wind instruments centers around simple shapes such as tubes and cones, whose acoustic properties are well understood and are easily fabricated with traditional manufacturing methods. The advent of additive manufacturing enables the realization of highly complex geometries and new wind instruments with unique sound qualities. While simulation software exists to predict the sound of wind instruments given their shape, the inverse problem of generating a shape that creates a desired sound is challenging given the computational cost of 3D acoustic simulations. In this work we create a fast 3D acoustic wind instrument simulator using GPU acceleration. In addition, we use deep learning to solve the inverse problem of generating a 3D shape that roughly approximates a desired sound when played as a single-reed instrument. Finally we develop an automatic method for determining pitch hole locations for a given shape to generate playable instruments.

It was the goal of this thesis to use skill sets and manufacturing methods discussed or introduced but not practiced in the undergraduate curriculum for mechanical engineers to create a working prototype of a musical instrument effect pedal. Specifically these skills include post-failure metallurgical examinations and circuit board design, and the manufacturing methods include metal forming (not cutting) with a lathe and sand casting. A musical instrument effect was chosen because it is a simple device with relatively simple circuitry, yet it still poses issues of system integration and design problems on multiple fronts. A typical design process was followed. However, in choosing manufacturing processes typical factors were examined (cost, rate, quality, etc.) as well as the stipulation that the process chosen must have been practiced before in the curriculum, forcing the designer to encounter different challenges and learn the detailed workings of an unfamiliar process. Finally recommendations concerning assembly and process modifications for mass production were given in light of the experience gained from building the prototype.

abstract: The Milky Way galaxy is a powerful dynamic system that is highly efficient at recycling material. Stars are born out of intergalactic gas and dust, fuse light elements into heavier elements in their cores, then upon stellar death spread material throughout the galaxy, either by diffusion of planetary nebula or by explosive events for high mass stars, and that gas must cool and condense to form stellar nurseries. Though the stellar lifecycle has been studied in detail, relatively little is known about the processes by which hot, diffuse gas ejected by dying stars cools and conglomerates in the interstellar medium (ISM). Much of this mystery arises because only recently have instruments with sufficient spatial and spectral resolution, sensitivity, and bandwidth become available in the terahertz (THz) frequency spectrum where these clouds peak in either thermal or line emission. In this dissertation, I will demonstrate technology advancement of instruments in this frequency regime with new characterization techniques, machining strategies, and scientific models of the spectral behavior of gas species targeted by these instruments. I begin this work with a description of radiation pattern measurements and their use in astronomical instrument characterization. I will introduce a novel technique to measure complex (phase-sensitive) field patterns using direct detectors. I successfully demonstrate the technique with a single pixel microwave inductance detectors (MKID) experiment. I expand that work by measuring the APEX MKID (A-MKID) focal plane array of 880 pixel detectors centered at 350 GHz. In both chapters I discuss the development of an analysis pipeline to take advantage of all information provided by complex field mapping. I then discuss the design, simulation, fabrication processes, and characterization of a circular-to-rectangular waveguide transformer module integrated into a circularly symmetric feedhorn block. I conclude with a summary of this work and how to advance these technologies for future ISM studies.
