Abstract:
This chapter addresses “institutions” as a central component of feminist analysis. It provides an overview of the ways in which feminist scholars, informed by varied feminist traditions and approaches, and working across a range of disciplines, have used different conceptualizations of institutions to explore gender power dynamics. It differentiates between “institutions” and other key concepts, such as “structure” and “organizations” andexplores “gender as an institution,” “gender in institutions,” “gendered institutions,” and “institutions as producers of gender.” Furthermore, it addresses the limitations of uni-dimensional understandings and methodologies, and argues the importance of incorporating more dynamic, inclusive, and intersectional lenses in contemporary institutional analysis.

Abstract:
The chapter examines the emergence of literature from coteries and domestic routine. It describes how male poetic circles, held together by friendship and common intellectual interests, produced the interconnected institutions of literature necessary to literature. While early in the century, women writers mostly worked privately, they eventually moved into more public venues such as the salon. An interest in subjectivity, the self, and friendship networks, which were also reading communities, fostered the creation of a performative and reflective self that gave rise to literary heroes to satisfy the new interests and demands of writers and readers.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the development of Russian modernism and avant-garde trends into the 1920s in relation to the new institutions of the Silver Age (1890s–1917), pausing on why the period has proven hard to define. It discusses key modernist journals and the social contexts, including groups and societies, that were formative for writers. How these cultural processes changed in Soviet Russia under a regime of political and aesthetic state control, and in Russia Abroad, is charted. While Socialist Realism became the dominant aesthetic from the 1930s, the chapter shows how innovations in language and theory (including Formalism and structuralism) as well as independent literary institutions bypassed official doctrines and led to important experimentation. The chapter tracks a number of phenomena bridged unofficial literary culture and the post-Soviet literary field.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on why courts have come to be seen as attractive forums in which to address tensions between religion and secular human rights. There are several reasons. One reason is the greater availability of courts with a human rights jurisdiction. A second factor is the growth of secular NGOs, and parallel changes in organized religions’ organizational forms and political organization, both of which have contributed to the increased prevalence of religious litigation domestically and transnationally. A third contributing development is the growth of intra-religious factionalism, involving claims that one group’s doctrinal position is the more authentic or authoritative expression of a particular organized religion than that of another group within the same religion. State authorities are then put in the position of having to decide which group to engage with as the true representative of the organized religion, and the courts are called in to adjudicate.
