Abstract:
This thesis focuses on a critical and comprehensive analysis of community participation within a health sector reform process in a post-conflict environment. The aim is to examine how evaluation of such processes should be guided, how decentralising policies should be implemented, and how the assumptions of existing evaluations limit their relevance and effectiveness. The thesis argues that comprehensive analysis demonstrates the need for a much deeper and more extensive understanding of the multiple complexities present in post-conflict environments than is often achieved. It is necessary to carry out a historical, comparative and analytical evaluative exercise, beyond mainstream structural-functionalist evaluations, because the latter generally do not address relevant external and internal variables affecting the conditions of the community. Utilising this proposed approach fieldwork in the communities of San Juan Chamelco and San Miguel Tucurú (in the northern department of Alta Verapaz) examined examples of the limitations of and potentials for the incorporation of traditional medicine into the institutional healthcare system. This fieldwork is used to inform development of a comprehensive framework for evaluation with wide potential as a technical-conceptual tool. The Guatemalan case is presented as an illustrative example of how this tool can be developed and elaborated within a specific historical, political, social and cultural context. Building on the findings of a sectoral evaluation carried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Health the comprehensive evaluation presented identifies key problems that prevented health decentralisation policies from having a significant and positive impact at the local level. In this complex post-conflict environment, local organisation and community participation are shown to be still in their infancy having been obliterated by the counter-insurgency policies during the course of prolonged conflict.

Abstract:
Despite its origins in England two hundred years ago, the picturesque continues to influence landscape architectural practice in late twentieth-century New Zealand. The evidence for this is derived from a close reading of the published discourse of the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects, particularly the now defunct professional journal, The Landscape. Through conceptualising the picturesque as a language, a model is developed which provides a framework for recording the survey results. The way in which the picturesque persists as naturalised conventions in the discourse is expressed as four landscape myths. Through extending the metaphor of language, pidgins and creoles provide an analogy for the introduction and development of the picturesque in New Zealand. Some implications for theory, practice and education follow.

Chagos Archipelago was sanitized in the 1970s for a US military base on Diego Garcia, following a secret "exchange of notes" that evaded legislative approval. 1,500 Chagossian evictees, "dumped" in Mauritius and Seychelles, have since become surplus population dwarfed by the planetary-scale military-colonial network. Of all the denounced legal ammunitions, the Chagos Marine Protected Area (MPA), along with its fiction of terra nullius, inflicts the greatest violence by legitimizing environmental fortification on the basis of a denial of the almost 200 years of Chagossian inhabitation. The assemblage of the military, security institutions and certain members of the scientific community, by defining the Chagos MPA as an "organic rationality," deploys a generalized and abstracted sense of ecological insecurity in aspiration for global environmental administration in opposition to traditional bodies of government. This thesis proposes the Chagos Institute of Environmental Humanities, a trojan horse with dual agency. While staging an apparent conformity to restrictions and regulations imposed by the UK-US alliance, the Institute quietly and resolutely supports an undercover project of decolonization and empowerment. Beyond physical resettlement, it recognizes and continues Chagossians' sustained efforts in resisting colonialism and militarism. It reads from the Chagos landscape their forgotten and dismissed stories. To know is to reclaim. To know is to empower. The new system of environmental humanities rejects the nature-culture dichotomy. In problematizing the anthropocentric bias within our production of knowledge, it reveals the racist and colonialist othering of non-Western epistemologies. There is not a deficit in knowledge, in a quantitative sense, but a deficiency at the epistemic level. This thesis urges that we reclaim prior Chagossian knowledge in the formation of their future that is still rooted in Chagossians' history.

Abstract:
This study carries out an in-depth study of the issues involved in the implementation of a quality improvement programme in a developing country. It does this by taking, as a case study, a World Bank led programme to create a Centre of Excellence at the National Institute for Amazon Research - INPA, in Manaus, capital of Amazon state. Brazil, with the aim of improving scientific research in the Amazon. The programme at INPA does not use a recognised quality management theoretical framework for improvement, but we look at how it takes into account the issues that quality location, in a remote part of a developing country. In order to achieve this, we develop a framework based around the ideas of Total Quality Management (TQM), and Riggs' Theory of Prismatic Societies, which deals with the problems caused by the Institute's status. One of the frequent problems in public administration in developing countries is that prescribed norms do not correspond to actual behaviour, a characteristic defined by Riggs as 'formalism'. The research strategy adopted is qualitative, and is based primarily on formal interviews, with pre-set questions. Interviews were largely carried out in Portuguese, and took place in Brasilia and Manaus. Data was also collected from the analysis of documents. In general, data analysis was mainly qualitative, but some basic quantitative analysis was occasionally used. The analysis showed us that there were serious weaknesses in the Excellence Project. Several important changes that were required, such as in the level of salaries and in the scientific management could not be made. Insufficient attention was paid to difficulties that are common in developing countries, and the presence of 'formalism' proved to be significant in explaining the failures of the improvement process. A key point of a TQM approach, that progress must be assessed and measured, did not happen, leading to a situation where INPA could not say whether there had been significant progress or not.

Abstract:
This dissertation reports on a study that investigated the functions and services that are rendered at the library of ARC-Small Grain Institute in Bethlehem. The study was directed by the research questions that included the investigation in library services and sources globally; the information seeking behaviour of the patrons of the library as well as the skills and competencies needed by librarians to render an effective service in a constant changing environment. These components served as a foundation for the development of a proposed service model, which reflects the incorporation of the changing roles of librarians in a research library. The current services and sources of the ARC-SGI library were discussed and compared to other libraries. A systematic review of the literature included the information seeking behaviour and information needs of researchers as well as the skills and competencies of librarians. A mixed-method approach, using both qualitative and quantitative methods, has been applied in the study. Data was collected through questionnaires and fifteen semi-structured interviews were held with selected patrons of ARC-SGI. The findings showed that information needs depends mostly on the different stages of research and flows directly from the type of work that they do. Attention was given to preferred source choices and problems experienced during information seeking. Training needs were addressed as well as the needs for additional information needed from the library. Based on the results, the study proposed a service model for an agricultural library. The model displays the library within the setting of an organisation as it supports the mission and vision of the parent organisation. It illustrates all the interdependent components that are essential for a successful agricultural library. The model also outlines the strategies of on-going evaluation and monitoring of the library services; the information needs and information seeking behaviour of the patrons as well as the challenges facing the library. The study concluded by making certain recommendations that can benefit the library of ARC-SGI, which will be an improvement added to the current services. A few suggestions are made for future research, which have definite advantages for an agricultural library within an organisation.

Abstract:

This study aims subsidize the building of analytical perspectives over the effectiveness of its actions coming from an analysis of the composition of its organizational culture. The hypothesis was formulated in a sense of that the existence of different conceptions for the term Environment among the workers of the institute has a relation with the process of the constitution of the organizational culture from the IBAMA. This perspective is given by the researchers experience into the environmental field, especially for had been part of the same functional body of the Institute. This same condition gave the possibility of adding to the historiography of IBAMA aspects concerning to the influence of the theoretical concepts for the term Environment into the Institutes organizational culture. The research was oriented by the theoretical fundamentals of authors that had explored the culture, the power and the behavior of organizations, such as TAVARES (1991), SCHERMERHORN, HUNT & OSBORNO (2001), FLEURY (2009) and, BERTERO (2009).It had adopted as methodological strategies the techniques of observation, questionnaires and interviews following the orientations by GOODE E HATT (1973), GIL (1994) and LAKATOS (2003) to identify the relations between the conceptualization of Environment by the side of the IBAMAs workers. In the CASTORIADIS (1982) conceptual perspective of historic beings it was analyzed registers of speech from others social actors that had written the history of the public Brazilian environmental management. The thesis presents the coexistence of two active conceptualizations for the term Environment that derivates from the IBAMAs process of environmentalization.

Environmental assessments, such as those for biotechnology applications, are typically conducted by small groups of expert assessors, but scholars and practitioners are increasingly interested in involving diverse stakeholders. In addition to other reasons for broader involvement, researchers have proposed that stakeholders could substantively aid assessment by (1) contributing system knowledge; (2) applying diverse conceptual models; (3) helping available knowledge keep pace with assessment needs; and (4) contributing based on their values, as do narrow expert assessors. Hypothesizing that these types of contribution, suggested theoretically or observed in single workshops, represent key sources of stakeholder contribution across processes, this study examines contribution in several diverse participant processes: an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) workshop on testing schemes for some engineered microbes compared with another EPA office's testing requirements for other engineered microbes; an MIT-Wilson Center workshop series on synthetic biology environmental assessment research needs; and the Food and Drug Administration's engineered salmon environmental assessment along with diverse stakeholder comments and critiques. The study also identifies practical considerations for enabling multi-stakeholder contribution and applies lessons to broader societal processes. The study analyzes process documents, conversations with conveners and participants, and participant observation. It also reviews knowledge about biological processes representing important areas for assessment and research, discussing complexities of knowledge production and use for assessment. Stakeholders contributed in each of the four hypothesized ways across the cases, suggesting that diverse involvement could regularly contribute positively to assessment. Stakeholders also (5) challenged standard assessment approaches, challenges that could aid assessment as well. Practical considerations for enabling diverse participant contribution emerge from the cases: Process continuity over time; credible expectations of authority or influence in decision-making; and balance between predefined structure and flexibility and between technical tasks and enabling non-technical input may be key. Work developing approaches in these areas is needed, including on incorporating nontechnical inputs, on processes encompassing later assessment stages, on integrating diverse participant processes with governance, and on diverse involvement in other aspects of technology development and execution. Better and increased stakeholder involvement could, through substantive content and incorporation of values, enable science, technology development, and decision-making best to serve society.

Abstract:
Humankind has lived on earth for a geologically brief time. Our species has proven a remarkable ability to adapt to our environment through the development and use of tools and technology. Little evidence suggests when our need to tame nature took hold in our collective cultural consciousness, yet throughout western history, human needs and activities have been perceived as separate from the natural world. We stand at the beginning of a new millennium, aware of the cycles which govern the flows of life on our planet, yet far from understanding the specifics of how they work. This building, an Institute for Urban Agriculture, seeks to challenge that notion of separation. The design expresses architecturally the ways in which the technological systems and organic systems work together to sustain the mission of the Institute. Through every aspect of the building design, the perceived separation of those systems is woven together to express an holistic view of the building as a fully integrated system. Human intervention is a necessary part of a healthy urban ecosystem, and positive relationships with the natural world contribute to the qualities of human health. Inspired by careful observation and experience of the surrounding urban landscape, this design recognizes those interactions and builds upon their social, ecological and economic values. Architecture becomes the medium for communicating transformed ideas about our relationships with the natural world to the building inhabitants and to the public at large.

Abstract:
East Africa, a region in Africa south of the Sahara, is faced with many environmental and urban problems due to development and population growth impacting on the land, vegetation and wildlife. This region, at present, does not have its own trained manpower able to plan and manage the natural resources but also to minimize man's impact on these resources in order to achieve sustainable development in the region. The thesis of this study is that a regional institute of resource planning and management be established in one of the three countries in the region to meet this pressing need.

Abstract:
Our dissertation concerns robotic navigation in dynamic indoor environments using image-based visual homing. Image-based visual homing infers the direction to a goal location S from the navigator’s current location C using the similarity between panoramic images IS and IC captured at those locations. There are several ways to compute this similarity. One of the contributions of our dissertation is to identify a robust image similarity measure – mutual image information – to use in dynamic indoor environments. We crafted novel methods to speed the computation of mutual image information with both parallel and serial processors and demonstrated that these time-savers had little negative effect on homing success. Image-based visual homing requires a homing agent tomove so as to optimise themutual image information signal. As the mutual information signal is corrupted by sensor noise we turned to the stochastic optimisation literature for appropriate optimisation algorithms. We tested a number of these algorithms in both simulated and real dynamic laboratory environments and found that gradient descent (with gradients computed by one-sided differences) works best.

Automation has the benefit of reducing human operators' workload. By leveraging the power of computers and information technology, the work of human operators is becoming easier. However, when the workload is too low but the human is required to be present either by regulation or due to limitations of automation, human performance can be negatively affected. Negative consequences such as distraction, mind wandering, and inattention have been reported across many high risk settings including unmanned aerial vehicle operation, process control plant supervision, train engineers, and anesthesiologists. Because of the move towards more automated systems in the future, a better understanding is needed to enable intervention and mitigation of possible negative impacts. The objectives of this research are to systematically investigate the attention and performance of human operators when they interact with automated systems under low task load, build a dynamic model and use it to facilitate system design. A systems-based framework, called the Boredom Influence Diagram, was proposed to better understand the relationships between the various influences and outcomes of low task loading. A System Dynamics model, named the Performance and Attention with Low-task-loading (PAL) Model, was built based on this framework. The PAL model captures the dynamic changes of task load, attention, and performance over time in long duration low task loading automated environments. In order to evaluate the replication and prediction capability of the model, three dynamic hypotheses were proposed and tested using data from three experiments. The first hypothesis stated that attention decreases under low task load. This was supported by comparing model outputs with data from an experiment of target searching using unmanned vehicles. Building on Hypothesis 1, the second and third hypotheses examined the impact of decreased attention on performance in responding to an emergency event. Hypothesis 2 was examined by comparing model outputs with data from an experiment of accident response in nuclear power plant monitoring. Results showed that performance is worse with lower attention levels. Hypothesis 3 was tested by comparing model outputs with data from an experiment of defensive target tracking. The results showed that the impact of decreased attention on performance was larger when the task was difficult. The process of testing these three hypotheses shows that the PAL model is a generalized theory that could explain behaviors under low task load in different supervisory control settings. Finally, benefits, limitations, generalizability and applications of the PAL model were evaluated. Further research is needed to improve and extend the PAL model, investigate individual differences to facilitate personnel selection, and develop system and task designs to mitigate negative consequences.

Abstract:
The paper examines significance of institutional environment for agricultural production. It adds to the extensive research of agricultural production functions. First, it reviews relevant theory of institutional economics that explains how institutions contribute to productivity in general, especially if interpreted as economic freedom. Then, a model of agricultural production is presented, which explains aggregate agricultural production using various inputs, as well as variables representing institutional environment. Results concerning elasticities of material inputs (land, labor, capital) are consistent with previous research. The paper proves some significance of institutional variables. Finally, it suggests some directions for further research.

Abstract:
Architects throughout have been forced to practice design surrounded by a society that generally lacks of architectural awareness and interest. A growing trend to transition from a relatively isolated profession into a field that promotes stronger public involvement is critical for architecture to evolve. Within the past 10 years, the growth of architectural centers have begun to dissolve the barrier between the profession and the general public in that their primary function regardless of what form they represent, is to introduce and educate issues of architecture that are an inescapable part of our built environment. An investigation of architectural research institute precedents, would allow for opportunities to understand how they have engaged professional knowledge with a growing educated public opinion. Promoting the idea of similar functions locally to a skeptic public has to be based on the importance of change, where new technologies are consistently transforming the way we approach design problems. Introducing a variety of techniques to display information, which go beyond any two dimensional format into a three or four dimensional, more tactile, interactive medium, allowing the observer to become engaged in what they are learning is important for individuals to establish meaning. The facility itself would be a catalyst for learning in which design issues are presented and solutions are viewed by the viewer in a multi-sensory way. The ultimate goal would be able to establish a system of memory responses to allow the general public a better connection with architecture. Creating a center of information housed within a singular building would be a beneficial beginning but it is important to express that information beyond any static building into a contextual environment in which it can be further related with. Adding richness to public spaces that promote cases of good architectural design can be an example that would allow the absorption of concepts through participation. Eventually, the results would lead to more knowledgeable public input about how their built environment is viewed and encourage better design.

With the rise of the on-demand economy and the increasingly high service levels expected by consumers, companies are racing to provide shorter and shorter delivery lead times for e-commerce orders. Two-day deliveries have become the norm in dense urban areas and companies are developing highly responsive urban distribution networks capable of serving consumers in lead times as low as one hour. These changing consumer shopping habits are leading to more fragmented deliveries and increased urban freight activity as it becomes more difficult to consolidate orders. Increased urban freight activity is in-turn leading to more congestion, greenhouse gas emissions, and air pollution, harming city residents. In this work, we explore the strategic design of highly responsive urban distribution networks, promising lead times of under two hours, and investigate which operational and environmental parameters drive the deployment of different types of network designs.
We explore how adding extra levels of network flexibility, with the ability to physically relocate fulfilment capacities throughout the day using mobile inventory locations, affects the commercial and environmental performance of a network. Furthermore, we evaluate the environmental footprint of these networks by measuring their contribution to congestion and CO₂ and NO[subscript x] emissions, and contrast these with the environmental footprint of next-day delivery distribution networks. From a policy perspective, we investigate how the strategic design and performance of highly responsive networks are affected by an urban congestion charge policy and by different levels of government subsidy for last-mile logistics infrastructure. We optimize the design of these highly responsive networks using an iterative simulation-optimization approach which captures the stochastic and dynamic nature of the last-mile operations.
We conduct a case study with a global fashion company, where we design highly responsive distribution networks capable of serving the company's online customers in Manhattan, New York, in under two hours. We find that highly responsive orders tend to be much less sustainable than orders delivered the next-day, with a higher delivery cost and environmental footprint. However, highly responsive networks can be sustainable if designed under favourable operational conditions, such as enabling the consolidation of orders and using sustainable couriers such as bicycles.

Abstract:
The present research sought to analyze the different conceptions of environmental education (EA) present in the Nascentes Verdes Rios Vivos program of the Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas (IPÊ), held in Nazaré Paulista, SP. We seek to understand, therefore, how the different conceptions of EA: conservative, pragmatic and critical are present in the Nascentes Verdes, Rios Vivos Program. In order to do so, we interviewed the IPÊ team and applied questionnaires to the elementary school teachers of Nazaré Paulista. By making these conceptions explicit to the program team and to teachers, they can review their assumptions and change or improve their actions. Although we do not believe in a only possible environmental education, we are more in agreement with the presuppositions present in the approach of Critical Environmental Education, since according to different authors it is the one that can generate change, social transformation of those involved with this educational practice (CARVALHO, 2004a, LIMA, 2004; LOUREIRO, 2004a). It is important to emphasize that we believe that different approaches can coexist, that contradictions are present. In fact, it was found, when we analyze the conception of the program team and teachers for the knowledge dimension, we find the predominance of critical and pragmatic tendencies. In terms of ethical and aesthetic values, the program team presented a more critical tendency when compared with teachers. However, when we look at the activities of the program, two parameters were not found: discussions of differences in access to elements of nature and in the distribution of environmental risks, as well as the use of aesthetic elements. Finally, with regard to the political participation dimension, although both actors have a predominantly critical conception, the program does not work out this dimension

Due to industrial development and technological innovation, many problems arise from the increasing number of electronics devices that need to be managed at end of life. The two main market failures related to waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) are economic loss and environmental externalities. Incomplete recovery of materials in waste mobile phones results in a great amount of economic loss. Many studies aim to improve the situation by characterizing metals within printed circuit boards (PCBs). My work focuses on the evolving composition and the flow of materials located outside of PCBs. I have discovered significant economic potential of non-PCB metals, and provide suggestions for optimization of different preprocessing steps. I recommend that preprocessors pay special attention to precious metals in fine shredding. And I have also provided strategies for plastics recycling by forecasting the demand and supply of it in Portugal. Besides opportunities for addressing environmental impact in the end-of-life stage of electronics products, there are also opportunities in other life cycle stages such as GHG savings by the enablement of semiconductors in the use stage. I identify six areas of GHG savings and provide insights for more informed policy to better evaluate the influence of technologies in the electronics industry.

Abstract:

The generation of domestic waste is at present less than 1 kg/day per person in Thailand, but generated amounts keeps steadily growing. This trend is closely connected to an increasing population and economic growth, something that is creating waste management issues. The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) outside Bangkok has the potential of being a leader in sustainable development in the Southeast Asian region, however a substantial opportunity is being missed – best environmental practices are currently not prioritized. Only 4 % of the total waste generated on campus is recycled at AIT, 3 % is composted and 93 % is taken to the municipal waste disposal site. Fluorescent light bulbs and other hazardous household waste are disposed on the campus dumpsite. Some measures have been undertaken in order to improve the solid waste management (SWM) at AIT, e.g. a new waste collection facility has been built in the outskirts of campus, where more space is provided in order to facilitate waste separation.

The field research for this study was carried out at AIT and the goal was to examine the SWM network, the problems and to analyse the recycling habits on campus. To investigate and visualize the actors involved in the SWM at AIT, the Actor-Network theory (ANT) was applied as an analytical framework. The generation of waste is the macro actor i.e. the reason for the existence of SWM. Other actors are the AIT students and staff (produce waste), the new Campus Environment and Development Committee – CEDC (the controlling part), environmental awareness (attitude towards recycling), and waste collectors.

The results from the survey witness of that people have a positive but somewhat cautious attitude towards the sustainability of source separation. Separating waste at source is a key mechanism for solving the SWM problem but people are uncertain of how to separate each waste fraction. There is a strong need to designate a coordinator of the SWM at AIT and as long as there is a lack of leadership, a goal of environmentally sustainable practices cannot be reached. The new CEDC is currently not performing any actions towards an integrated SWM.

The present work approaches the subject of the social responsibility of businesses, considering the implications that the institutional environment exerts on business practices. The business world has increasingly emitted signals acknowledging its social duties, and with regards to Brazil, this has mainly occurred during the last decade of twentieth century. During this period, while taking the shoe industry of Franca as an object of study, the factories social responsibility is manifested in the creation of the Pro-Child Institute as a reaction taken by the local entrepreneurs against allegations of the use of child labor in the productive chain. The transformations verified in the national institutional environment are analyzed in the space of the four classic dimensions of the business social responsibility (economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic), aiming to understand the determining institutions for the phenomenon studied from the point of view of the actors. The perception of the footwear manufacturers associated with the Pro-Child Institute is obtained by means of interviews and survey of the historical declarations registered by the media. The content analysis is made by use of a matrix of thematic categories compatible with the treatment given to the subject of business social responsibility according to the influence of the institutions. The results reveal the preponderant force of economic interests associated with the international market, and the national fragility in the application of the legal measures, in the field of external social obligations, as well as the moral complacency of the actors involved and the restricted contribution of the governing structures toward philanthropic action to transform the local values relative to the use of child labor. The legitimacy of the businesses intermix with the economic interests in the reduction in the costs of transactions and its social representation, as to the relative weight of the institutions that conform to the environment.

In the past few decades global health has improved significantly and many countries have started to move away from high mortality rates due to infectious diseases. This trend has however been accompanied by an increase in chronic disease incidence, in particular Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs). In countries that are making this epidemiological transition, such as India, chronic diseases are also a hindrance to economic health as a large portion of deaths occur when people are still active in the work force. There are various policies that may be implemented to curb the burden of CVDs. These include population based approaches and high risk management strategies. In this thesis, the design of a mobile CVD Screening Kit to aid the screening of high risk subjects by low-skilled health workers is described. Focusing on India, a fertile ground where a mobile tool-kit may be implemented was identified at the intersection of: 1. Strong health worker schemes in primary care, 2. The diffusion of mobile phone technology and 3. Well developed CVD risk management strategies. The tools that constitute this CVD Screening Kit were tested at Sengupta Hospital and Research Institute, Nagpur, India. These tests showed that there is potential to develop the CVD Screening Kit further into a commercial product. The main advantage of the CVD Screening Kit developed is that, differently from standard CVD risk factor analysis, it measures the root issue of many CVDs, i.e. arterial stiffness. Therefore, the CVD Screening Kit brings complex clinical analysis capabilities, that are generally only available in equipped hospitals, to the hands of low-skilled health workers working in primary care centers. Although the CVD Screening Kit is still at an early stage of development, how it may be implemented in current public and private health programs that tackle CVDs, is also analysed in this thesis. Furthermore, it is discussed that introducing mobile phones to healthworkers, who are mostly female, may have a slow but strong impact on the independence and leadership of women.

Abstract:
Architecture is a spatial reality and, as such, should be designed spatially. Traditional methods of two dimensional design offer limited insight to the nature of the built project. By designing a project in three dimensions from its inception, an architect comes closer to the actuality of the building. This thesis addresses the possibilities and realities of three dimensional computer aided design. Radical changes in computer technology have made interactive three dimensional design possible. Clusters of processing units acting in parallel offer unprecedented flexibility and computing power. New methods of input such as voice and gesture activation are allowing greater flexibility of input. The future of three dimensional computer aided design points to higher resolution displays, holographic imaging, and spatial object manipulation. The vehicle for this architectural thesis is a computer research facility; The National Institute for Advanced Media. The project addresses the demands that new computer technologies place on architecture. It also offers a direction for designing with these new technologies. This thesis contains an analysis of the architectural project, a complete description of the architectural process, and a summary of all software packages considered. The Apple Macintosh IIfx was chosen as the hardware platform for this investigation because of its object oriented graphical environment and for its advanced multimedia capabilities.

Abstract:
In 2017, of the 6.4 million boys and girls in Zimbabwe, 4.9 million lived in poverty, including 1.5 million in extreme poverty, and these children mostly come from households where adults are unemployed (ZIMSTAT, 2018). Poverty and environmental risks present the biggest threat to children in the form of pollution, violence, poor sanitation, poor diets and a lack of access to rights like education, health and a safe living environment. However, whilst children can be the biggest casualty of poverty and environmental risks, they have the agency to reduce the impact of poverty and environmental risks through their participation in designing, implementing and the monitoring and evaluation of programmes aimed at mitigating poverty and environmental risks. The goal of the study was to explore and describe how children’s agency is recognised and respected in programmes/interventions aimed at reducing poverty and environmental risks in the Education for Income Programme at the Lighthouse Institute, Harare. The study adopted a qualitative research approach; it was exploratory and applied and the research design was an instrumental case study. The sample for the study was purposively chosen and included five key informants and five child participants from the Education for Income programme at the Lighthouse Institute. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and the data was analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that children are vulnerable to poverty and environmental risks and this vulnerability, together with lack of knowledge, violation of rights, lack of education, culture and the perception of children, have hindered the full participation of children in mitigating poverty and environmental risks. However, it was also found that children have agency and have the capacity to fully participate in mitigating poverty and environmental risks when they are empowered and understand the scope of their participation and their rights. The study concluded that children should not be defined by their vulnerability and need for protection, but rather by their agency to make a contribution in matters that affect their lives. They should be recognised and respected by including them in all the phases of programmes intended to mitigate poverty and environmental risks. Recommendations made include creating awareness of the importance of child agency, adoption of policies that promote child agency and the use of a human rights-based approach when dealing with children. Abstract:
In a rapidly changing environment of growing competition for limited resources and ever increasing operational costs, institutions of higher education must focus on all aspects of the organizational functions to insure institutional effectiveness and the maximization of student success. This study will use a Student Environment Model (SEM) to assess students' perception of their college environment outside of the formal classroom at a unique two year technical college. The information obtained is used by the administration of Texas State Technical College Waco (TSTCW) to make appropriate adjustments in programs, services, or policies when the student data indicates that change or improvement is needed. While the SEM provides an indication of the students' "image" of the college environment, it can also provide indicators of areas which need improvement or require change. Applying the SEM information to decision making, problem solving, and planning will allow the institution and its people to move toward higher productivity and continuous quality improvement.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the work environment currently existing at the Tourism Institute of Portugal, by analyzing the average overall satisfaction level of the employees, to know what to improve in relation to Internal Communication. Two types of analysis were used, quantitative and qualitative. For the first, we resorted to the use of a questionnaire, anonymous and confidential nature, to be filled by employees of the institute using a 1-6 scale (1 - Very Dissatisfied, 6 - Very Satisfied). We also included open-answer fields, which combined with the interviews, formed the qualitative analysis. The results can be translated by the average overall satisfaction level of the employees (3,51), this being situated at the central position of the scale used, and by the average satisfaction level of the employees regarding the questionnaire items related with the Internal Communication (3,70). Concerning the content analysis (open-answer fields of the questionnaires and interviews), in general, all participants mentioned the existence of a fragmented organizational culture and a distant relationship with the Governing Board. In summary, these results reveal an opportunity to improve the existing work environment in Turismo de Portugal, with great potential for growth. To achieve this, for example, there could be used some of the suggestions for improvement made by the respondents in the open-answer fields of the questionnaires and interviews.

Effective open space is critical to the urban quality of life because it fosters environmental, social, and economic vitality. However, some designers, planners, and developers have a tendency to focus on only one of these aspects and, thus, create spaces that are monofunctional and inefficient over time. To ensure effective open spaces in cities, landscape architects must think strategically and employ design tactics that are multifunctional and perform environmentally, socially, and economically. My objective was to provide landscape architects with a framework that ensured effective open spaces through the manipulation of the urban surface. In this report, I explored how the urban surface could be used to create multifunctional, flexible, and adaptive solutions that informed and directed (re)development so that urban spaces had lasting value. A thorough literature review that explored concepts from Jane Jacobs, Alex Wall, and Ying-Yu Hung was used to create a theoretical framework that consisted of various tactics. The tactics were aesthetic, programmatic, contextual, and/or performative in nature, and the aggregation of these tactics in the urban surface catalyzed environmental, social, and economic vitality in urban open spaces. My methodology was iterative, cycling periods of research, design, and analysis in both group and individual settings. The theoretical framework was used to evaluate and inform design decisions, and the design decisions refined and validated the theoretical framework itself. The theoretical framework was first applied to two precedent studies through a series of diagrammatic mapping exercises. Then, the theoretical framework was applied to two collaborative, multidisciplinary redevelopment projects. The first project was the redevelopment of the Village Plaza shopping center in Manhattan, Kansas (MHK Project), and the second project was the revitalization of Downtown East in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the annual Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition, sponsored by the Urban Land Institute (ULI Competition). Both of these projects were evaluated and refined using the same diagrammatic mapping exercises. The effectiveness of using the theoretical framework as a guide for designing successful open spaces was validated with my team’s victory in the finalist round of the ULI Competition. The tactics in the theoretical framework offered pragmatic and multiscalar strategies that I incorporated into the open spaces that my team and I designed. Ultimately, I discovered that the role of surface was to accommodate, organize, structure, and facilitate the dynamic processes necessary for environmental, social, and economic vitality, which enhanced the urban quality of life and created an indisputable sense of place.

This thesis focuses on the drivers of regional development and environmental control decisions in the iron and steel industry in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region of China. The analysis presented includes (1) a county-level econometric analysis of the geographic distribution of the iron and steel industry between 2004 and 2009 in Hebei province and (2) a firm-level case study that analyzes the value of a flexible space option for a hypothetical, relocated steel plant that faces uncertainty in the timing and stringency of future environmental policy. Results from the econometric analysis of industrial distribution show a significant negative relationship between the initial rate of economic growth of a county, measured in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) change between 2004 and 2005, and growth of iron and steel shares in that county between 2005 and 2009. Results also show a significant negative relationship between population density in 2005 and both growth and concentration of iron and steel industrial shares. These results provide regional context and a descriptive baseline for a stylized case study. Inspired by the government-mandated relocation of major steel company Shougang in advance of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the case study uses real options analysis to evaluate the value of a flexible option to install flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) technology for sulfur dioxide (SO₂) removal in response to uncertain developments in environmental policy. Case study results show a significant increase in the NPV of a steel facility that has the ability to employ the flexible option to construct an FGD system in the face of policy that begins in year six. This result is sensitive to policy timing, FGD space cost, and future FGD costs. Insights from this analysis are designed to help policymakers understand past patterns of industry evolution and environmental decision-making in firms during a period of very rapid economic development. This understanding can be used to identify ways to increase the effectiveness of environmental regulations in dynamic, rapidly-developing China.
